COMMUNITY

runner Community Bus

T

he Road Runner Community Bus provides a regular timetabled service throughout a number of areas of North Bedfordshire which have inadequate or no other service. Without this operation many residents in the small hamlets and villages, who do not drive or have no car, would have to rely on taxi services to visit shops and doctors etc. The service is open to anyone but passengers are almost all elderly and disadvantaged local residents who do not have their own transport and who currently travel free-of-charge with a Local Authority Bus Pass. The service helps to improve their quality of life and reduce their isolation.

In 2016 the Road Runner Community Bus received a grant from the Department for Transport Community Minibus Fund to purchase a new bus. This brand new 16 seater Mercedes minibus is now fully operational, offering passengers a deluxe service, on all our scheduled routes. This is a non-profit making and staffed by volunteers. With funding for operations is kindly provided by Bedford Borough Council, Central Bedfordshire Council and Milton Keynes Council. Services run from Kempston to Milton Keynes, Aspley Guise to Bedford, Bromham to Kempston and also some sheltered housing to supermarkets within the Bedford and Kempston area. Although a very small operation, they ran approximately 4,400 people journeys in 2016 on the above routes. Why not look out for the Road Runner Community Bus? We might be able to transport you to your destination!

They also have a self-drive 16 seater bus which is available for hire. For details please contact: Geoff Ware 07776 340114.

Bedford Borough Council’s council tax increase is held down to 1.75%, while the Government’s social care levy will add another 3% to bills.

The budget includes major savings to help close this gap and ensure a balanced budget. Meanwhile, it prioritises protecting the most vulnerable in society:

A major investment in the change to a 2 tier school system and the replacement of all temporary buildings with permanent ones.

The context for the budget is a combination of a massive cut in government funding and a sharp rise in the need for services, especially social care for the growing elderly population. The Council’s main government grant is falling from over £30 million in 2015 to just £5.8 million in 2019. By 2020/21, the authority faces a funding gap of £27.5 million.

Alistair Burt, your Local MP... GRASS ROOTS MEETINGS

O

ne of the really good things about an MPs job, particularly those of us who look after England’s countryside constituencies, is the opportunity to meet with those who give up their time as volunteers to sit as our parish and town councillors, and their clerks who work so faithfully for them.

applications, but on the cumulative impact of new developments, with concerns covering ‘soft’ infrastructure such as GPs, and school places, to transport and water. There was also annoyance that new rules for development gain in terms of what used to be s106 monies, were now spent wider afield under the Community Infrastructure Levy, and so did not always benefit people quite as locally as used to be the case.

Since being elected in 2001, I have met with those who do this on a regular basis, both to report back on what I am doing in Westminster, but more importantly to listen to what is going on locally, and what I may be able to do to assist in those matters where people are looking for help.

On transport issues, we discussed the future of the A1 throughout our area. A current Highways Agency study reported in November that the three options under consideration were, unsurprisingly, an upgrade to motorway under a new route, major improvements or minor improvements along the existing line, with more work to do. Let me stress we are a long way from decisions- nothing will be decided soon, nor without much further consultation. The A1 position in Bedfordshire is complicated by work anticipated on the Oxford-Cambridge road expressway, and the new East West Rail which must also be looking for space in the same area. There will be more to come on all these.

In February, I had such a meeting in Sandy, attended by upwards of fifty such public servants from as far apart geographically as Dean and Shelton in the north, to Wrestlingworth and Cockayne Hatley in the east, and Arlesey in the south – my constituency is some size! Let me give you a feel of what was raised. Housing and planning issues were top of the agenda. Whether the council was Central Beds or Bedford Borough, the pressures on the region for new housing are significant. Much of the discussion was not so much on individual

8

More locally people were increasingly worried by inconsiderate parking on estates, and of course, speeding through our villages. This means us, by the way! Most speeding is done by locals! And we closed by discussing NHS issues; hospitals, social care, GPs and musculoskeletal services, plus Broadband, or the lack of it, and drainage. I will be reporting back on many of these issues, and appreciate very much the involvement of so many people.

Kyoto

hen you think of Japanese culture and traditions, you might begin to picture silk kimono-clad geishas, elegantly holding parasols and walking along narrow cobble-stoned streets lined with woodbuilt townhouses, perhaps pouring tea in historic teahouses. The ancient city of Kyoto is widely considered to be the continued beating heart of Japanese traditions, and remains one of the bestpreserved cities in Japan.

In the heart of Honshu, Japan’s main island, set in a valley in the Yamashiro Basin, and surrounded on three sides by mountains, Kyoto was for over a thousand years the Imperial capital of Japan, and is still also known as the thousand-year capital. Originally arranged in accordance with traditional Chinese feng shui, largely based on the ancient Chinese capital of Chang’an (modern-day Xi’an), many of the streets in the Nakagyō, Shimogyō, and Kamigyō-ku areas still follow a grid pattern. With some 2,000 religious places – including 1,600 Buddhist temples and 400 Shinto shrines – along with palaces, gardens, and traditional machiya townhouses, Kyoto is a veritable treasure trove of Japanese architectural gems. While many of the country’s major cities saw destruction during the Second World War, Kyoto was largely spared from conventional bombing, and was in fact removed from the US’s list of targets for atomic bombing at the end of the War, at the insistence of Henry L. Stimson, Secretary of War. Kyoto accounts for some 20% of Japan’s National Treasures, and the ‘Historic Monuments 10

of Ancient Kyoto’ are recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. With landmarks as stunning as the famous Temple of the Golden Pavilion (Kinkaku-ji), the Temple of the Silver Pavilion (Ginkaku-ji), and Ryōan-ji, renowned for its classical rock garden, the picturesque Philosopher’s Walk, the geisha quarters of Gion and Pontochō, and the canals which line the older streets, it’s easy to see why this city so charms visitors. Kyoto is also well worth visiting for its abundance of delicious Japanese cuisine. The Nishiki Market alone is a foodie wonderland, where you can sample mochi (rice cakes), tsukemono (Japanese pickles), and raw oysters, amongst other delicacies. Kyoto’s aristocracy developed Kaiseki Ryori cuisine into an elaborate dining style with a prescribed order of courses, from its origins in the traditional tea ceremony, while austere Buddhist monks developed shojin ryori cuisine, consisting of strictly vegetarian dishes, commonly including the local speciality ingredient, tofu. Traditionally, the home-style cuisine of Kyoto is Obanzai Ryori, made up of numerous small dishes comprised of local, seasonal produce, and governed by a series of strict rules and principles. All of these cuisines can be tried and tasted while in Kyoto, whether in a ryokan, restaurant, or staying in a temple. Kyoto is an enchanting and intriguing city, with its temples, traditional wooden houses, mysterious geishas, cobblestoned and canal-lined streets, it offers a fascinating insight into the Japan of the past. International Women’s Day 2017

March 8th #BeBoldForChange

F

or International Women’s Day 2017, we’re asking you to #BeBoldForChange. Call on the masses or call on yourself to help forge a better working world – a more gender inclusive world.

International Women’s Day as a vehicle for change, is it possible?

Last year, organisations and individuals around the world supported the #PledgeForParity campaign and committed to help women and girls achieve their ambitions; challenge conscious and unconscious bias; call for genderbalanced leadership; value women and men’s contributions equally; and create inclusive flexible cultures. From awareness raising to concrete action, organizations rallied their people to pledge support to help forge gender parity on International Women’s Day (IWD) and beyond. But the World Economic Forum predicts the gender gap won’t close entirely until 2186. This is too long to wait. Around the world, IWD can be an important catalyst and vehicle for driving greater change for women and moving closer to gender parity.

12

What if the world truly stepped up to take bold action? Will you #BeBoldForChange on International Women’s Day 2017 and beyond by taking groundbreaking action that truly drives the greatest change for women.

Use International Women’s Day (IWD) on March 8th as an important opportunity to: • celebrate the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women because visibility and awareness help drive positive change for women • declare bold actions you’ll take as an individual or organization to help progress the gender agenda because purposeful action can accelerate gender parity across the world. Each one of us – with women, men and nonbinary people joining forces – can be a leader within our own spheres of influence by taking bold pragmatic action to accelerate gender parity. Through purposeful collaboration, we can help women advance and unleash the limitless potential offered to economies the world over. ver returned poor or faulty goods for the shop to simply dismiss your complaint?

It is important to know your basic statutory shopping rights. By law, goods are faulty if they’re not of satisfactory quality as described, fit for purpose and last a reasonable length of time. Don’t assume you can change it – If there’s no fault, you have NO legal rights. So buy the wrong size or colour, or change your mind, and you’ve no automatic right to a refund. Many shops just allow this out of goodwill. Do remember Receipts aren’t vital – With faulty goods, you simply need to prove purchase. This could be the receipt or any other legitimate record. But if you are just utilising a store’s returns policy, if it requires a receipt. Don’t go to the manufacturer- It’s important to understand legally your relationship is with the retailer, not the manufacturer. So it is the responsibility of the retailer to sort it out. Do mark receipts for gifts – If there’s a problem with a gift item, legally it’s you who has to take it

14

back. So when in the shop write on the receipt it’s a gift and who it’s for eg ‘bought as a gift for Bob’, and the rights are transferred. Don’t expect fewer rights online – You’ve MORE rights buying online or phone/catalogue under the Consumer Contracts Regulations. You can get a full refund for most goods within 14 days (even if there’s no fault) – you’ve a further 14 days to send them back. This covers ‘buy it now’ on eBay too, if the seller is a trader. Do specify a delivery date – If you agreed a delivery date with a seller (and can prove this) but goods don’t arrive by the set time, it’s a breach of contract and you’ve a right to a refund. If you don’t state this, delivery only has to be made without undue delay, which usually means 30 days.

It’s all about expectations, as well as rights

Even if you don’t have a legal right, companies’ reputations depend on giving decent service. Quote the rights and say “according to the Consumer Rights Act 2015. It’ll make a powerful impression. But, ultimately, if the shop refuses, you’d need to go to court. For more information and full consumer rights visit www.moneysavingexpert.com

CHARITY

A

utism Bedfordshire is an independent charity setup in 1991 providing support for individuals with autism, parents/carers, families and associated professionals. Within Children’s Services we offer several different services across the county.

LOAF (Loads of Autistic Fun), a Saturday morning family activity group which the whole family can attend providing an inclusive environment where all children up to age 12 (those with autism and their siblings) and their parents/carers are supported by trained staff and volunteers. LOAF allows children with autism to relax, have fun and ‘be themselves’ with people who understand their 16

complex needs and anxieties. Wanted Fun are our youth groups which provide social opportunities for young people aged 10-17 years with Asperger’s Syndrome or high-functioning Autism. The groups provide different activities both at the base and within the community depending on the interests of the young people and also support what they want to do. The group is also a great opportunity for young people to make new friends and to develop their social skills and self-confidence in a relaxed, positive environment. Our Summer Activity Schemes run in Bedford and Luton providing social, educational and play experiences for children with Autistic Spectrum Conditions (ASC) aged 3-17 years. We run four different week-long schemes at the beginning of the summer holidays.

“I cannot stress enough what a unique and wonderful scheme this is. The benefits for both autistic children and their families are almost immeasurable. There is real opportunity for children to develop…while parents and siblings have some time together”. (Parent)

CHARITY Alongside these core services we also offer additional opportunities such as trampoline course, soft play sessions and family swim sessions subject to additional funding being secured. It has clearly been evident that our services have hugely benefitted the local community who value the support and assistance provided. ‘The understanding that staff have, generally and personally, is outstanding’, says one parent, ‘They make this all about these children, which is exactly what they need. Amazing’. Another parent commented about the summer activity scheme that ‘this is one of the best, wellorganised, understanding events we have attended. The staff are all amazing and filled me and my child with confidence’. Parent training has also been hugely successful over recent years and we work alongside the CAMHS team to deliver this across the county. A total of 95 parents and carers attended the training during 2015-16, with 93% rating their experience ‘very good’ or ‘excellent’. Among the topics covered were Anxiety, Managing Challenging Behaviour, Sexuality and Relationships, Sleep Problems, Caring for Carers and Communication.

Opportunities

This is an exciting time to be part of the team, and we are pleased to announce that we have both paid and voluntary roles available at our term time groups. We would also love to hear from you if you are interested in joining our 2017 summer scheme teams. This is an ideal opportunity for local educational/social welfare staff and students to work or volunteer and gain valuable experience of supporting and helping children with autism.

1to0trweaat yoyurs Mother

this Mother’s Day

M

other’s day is all about showing your mother just how much you love and appreciate her and thanking her as best you can for the many years she has spent nurturing and looking after you.

Pampering

What better way for your mother to truly relax than a day at a spa? Why not go with her, treat yourself too and make a day of indulgence.

Day out

Get some friends and family together, park up in a country pub and plot a circular walk. End your walk with a hearty meal in front of a roaring log fire.

Flowers

A bouquet may seem like an obvious choice but if you choose her favourite flowers, or an elegant pot plant for the house she will be delighted.

Afternoon tea

The English preserve of taking tea is a delightfully civilised way to enjoy a good old chinwag – so take her to a tea house and spend a peaceful afternoon catching up.

Meal

Give your mum a break from cooking for a night and book a restaurant meal for all the family. 20

Mini-break

If you really want to show your mother how special she is, book a weekend getaway. Take her for a cultural tour of Paris, or warming weekend in Barcelona and get some shopping in while you’re there.

Cleaning service

What is your mother’s least favourite activity? Ironing? Cleaning? Vacuuming the carpets? Why not get some hired help in for her one day, or more if you can afford it, as an extra special mother’s day surprise.

Theatre/musical

Is your mother mad about musicals or a theatre buff? You could make a day of it and book tickets to see her favourite show then take her out to supper.

Accessories

A pair of earrings or a string of pearls provide the perfect way to create a new look without the need for a whole new wardrobe.

Makeover

The years may have been kind to your mother but she’s so busy looking after other people she forgets to look after herself. Book her in for a makeover and remind her of how beautiful she still is.

HEALTH & BEAUTY

Save Your Sight!

M

ost people don’t think about their eyes much until something goes wrong. It’s important to understand what happens to our eyes as we age. Your optometrist does so much more than provide spectacles. The following conditions are all detectable by optometrists during a routine eye examination.

Cataracts These are caused by clouding of the lens inside the eye. They are not painful but vision may be smudged or blurry. Diabetics and those taking certain medications are more at risk, but in most cases they are caused by old age. Most cataracts may be treated successfully by surgical removal then replacing the cloudy lens with a clear, artificial one. Glaucoma This is a condition in which the optic nerve at the back of the eye is damaged. It is usually though not always, caused by raised pressure inside the eyeball. 99% of Glaucoma sufferers experience no symptoms until significant damage to their sight has occurred. The risk becomes more significant once you are over 40 and it increases with age. Anyone with a family history of the disease is more at risk, along with diabetics, very short-sighted people and anyone from an Afro-Caribbean background. If detected early Glaucoma can be controlled with eye-drops, and in some cases surgery. 22

Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) happens when the delicate ‘seeing-cells’ at the back of the eye stop working. It usually affects both eyes. The risk of getting it increases with age but poor diet, too much sun-exposure and smoking are all contributory factors. You are also more at risk if there is a family history of the condition. There are two types: Wet AMD is rarer and can be treated if caught early, and dry AMD, which is currently untreatable. The progress of dry AMD may be slowed by increasing the amount of fresh fruit and vegetables consumed and by stopping smoking. Diabetes is not an eye disease but eye problems are among its most significant complications. An optometrist will check for signs that the blood vessels of the eye are leaking or not working properly. If problems are discovered then you will be referred for laser treatment at your local hospital. Even if you are not Diabetic and your eyesight seems fine it is important to have the health of your eyes checked at least once every two years, as changes may happen without you realising.

Remember…

Unlike teeth, eyes do not usually hurt when there is something wrong. Generally, the earlier an eye problem is detected, the easier it is to treat. If you drive, it is your responsibility to make sure you satisfy the legal visual requirements. Book an eye examination today. You have just one pair of eyes, and they have to last you a lifetime, so take care of them.

How to write a

Living Will The term Living Will is commonly used to refer to a document which expresses how you want to be treated or cared for in certain situations when you may not have the capacity to communicate your decisions. It gives your family, doctors and caregivers confidence that they are following your wishes at an emotionally fraught time. If you are over 18, you can use the document to communicate about types of treatment that you don’t want to undertake and give more general statements about how you want to be cared for in accordance with your beliefs and values.

Our services include: • General Health Screen* - to assess overall health. Ideal for wellperson checks, planning a pregnancy, or monitoring an exercise programme • Bioresonance Testing - nutrient deficiencies, food sensitivity, toxins, environmental stressors • Medical Tests* - hormones, cholesterol, nutrigenomics, allergies, parasites, nonNHS tests • Phlebotomy Service • Company Health Screening • Health Talks to local groups

You can find lots of advice via charities and legal organisations about how you may want to record these thoughts. If you wish to include an advance decision about not undertaking life sustaining treatments however, for it to be valid, you must follow very specific instructions set out in the Mental Capacity Act 2005. This states what you must cover in the document and says that your wishes must be dated, signed and witnessed. Whilst legally doctors and solicitors do not need to be involved, it is wise to discuss options with medical professionals to ensure you fully understand all the consequences. They may also be able to help you phrase things more clearly. By Susan Brookes-Morris

Senior Snippets Tips for Sleeping Well

s we age, sleeping patterns change but sleep is still just as important to our physical and emotional health as it ever was. These tips can help you overcome age-related sleep problems and get a good night’s rest.

Maintain a consistent sleep schedule. Go to bed and wake up at the same times every day, even on weekends. Keep busy. Social activities, seeing the family, volunteering or learning something new can all help exercise the mind and tire it out for the night. Limit caffeine late in the day. Avoid caffeine late in the day.

Don’t watch TV or look at a tablet or computer for an hour before bedtime. Doing these activities can suppress melatonin levels and affect subsequent sleep. Develop soothing bedtime rituals. Taking a bath, playing music, or practicing a relaxation technique such as meditation or deep breathing can help you wind down. It is important to remember that just because you are sleeping less, it doesn’t necessarily mean you have sleep ‘problems’. However, if you are not sleeping well, having to get up frequently at night, or not waking up feeling refreshed, consider visiting the doctor for more advice and information. Women and stress

what type are you?

S

tress isn’t a concept unique to women but the way that it affects women is. Women are naturally better than men at multi-tasking and they increasingly take on more and more roles but they’re more prone to stress and their bodies are unable to handle the effects as biology has not changed to accommodate the new demands. Identifying your own stress type can help determine what will help you relax more easily.

Hyper-S

Vigilant, anxious, prone to headaches and sinus infections, trouble falling asleep, wake up during the night and rise early. High levels of cortisol mean they consider every task an emergency and can be emotional and sometimes explosive. Prone to developing hardening of the arteries, heart disease, type-2 diabetes, panic disorder and infertility. Exercise is key, avoiding coffee. Breakfast should be the largest meal, with smaller meals and snacks for the rest of the day to minimise the effects of a nervous stomach.

Hypo-S

Accumulate pain in their back, pelvis, bladder, gain weight around their hips and thighs and are often overweight. Go to sleep late, wake up late, find it hard to concentrate, feel de-motivated and suffer from gastrointestinal disorders, depression, chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia.

With an extreme sensitivity to stress, they need to control stress response. A diet rich in fibre from fruits and vegetables will stabilise cortisol. Exercise is essential to stimulate endorphins.

Hypo-P

The rarest stress response; occurs when both stress hormones are in sync but functioning at chronically low levels. Emotional detachment, aches and pains, rarely expressing emotions, fainting easily and getting dizzy when standing up suddenly. Asthma, ulcerative colitis, inflammatory disorders and helplessness are all ailments. High-fibre foods such as fruits and whole grains will help as well as being consistent in the timing of meals to help synchronise body rhythms.

Hyper-P

The classic overachiever who goes on and on until collapsing. Fatigue, altered mood and a lack of motivation when they burn out. Blurry vision, need for sleep, lack of energy, feeling over-emotional. Hyper-P’s nervous system goes from high gear to crash, so she has to learn how to prevent her collapses and restore herself after a meltdown. Pampering and exercise helps balance high amounts of stressful energy. Small meals and snacks through the day helps maintain energy levels. Coffee only in the morning, as later it can disrupt sleeping patterns.

Eat in season

F

arm shop expert and manager of Bedford’s Summerhill Farm Shop, Sandy Boyd, tells us about eating seasonally and what should be on your plate this spring.

Who hasn’t relished the first fresh asparagus, courgette or tomato at the beginning of a new season. Not only is seasonal food fresher but also it’s tastier and more nutritious than food that has been force grown. Eating seasonally is about eating the right foods at the right time – a crisp salad when the weather’s warm, a wholesome stew when it’s cold, strawberries in June, Brussels sprouts in December. Buying seasonally can be as much as a third cheaper than food bought out of season. Seasonal food is often locally sourced which guarantees a shorter time to reach your kitchen and maximizes the nutritional benefit. When food is left to ripen on the plant, it contains more nutrients, which makes it naturally stronger and more resistant to disease. Eating ripe food close to home reduces the need to source food from overseas, ultimately reducing food miles and making it better for the environment.

34

The alternative is force-grown fruit and vegetables that are produced in artificial conditions, requiring fertilisers and resulting in watery, flavourless produce. Out of season produce may have been picked six or more weeks before you buy and flown around the world to reach you, losing nutritional value, taste and quality. At Summerhill Farm Shop, we stock a fresh selection of local and seasonal produce and here’s what you should be looking out for this spring: · Asparagus · Wild garlic · Yorkshire rhubarb · Purple sprouting broccoli · Blood orange · Radishes · Watercress · Chard

Since opening in late Summer 2016 we are now in our sixth month at the Retreat and have acquired many regular customers which include families, couples, and organisations. We are now looking forward to seeing increasing numbers of visitors as we significantly improve the facilities available. Subject to planning approval this will include a good-sized area of outdoor decking to the front of the window. We know there is a popular demand for this, not least from dog owners and the great view from inside will not be spoilt by this addition. The Retreat offers a range of hot and cold drinks, cakes and hot and cold savouries. In the future we will be increasing all the menu options available and promoting various new lunch additions. We also plan to introduce breakfast items to our menu as soon as possible. The Cloverdale Retreat, The Priory County Park, Barkers Lane, Bedford MK41 9DJ

Writing an

A* Essay W

riting an academic essay can be daunting. Hopefully our how-to guide might make the process a little easier. Start with your notes. Get key points down, quotes, useful resources and so on. Don’t worry about grammar and spelling; at this point, it’s all about getting your ideas together in one place. Ideally, you’ll want to start your research well before your deadline, so that you can add to your notes when you hear something relevant in a lecture, or come across something when you’re reading. Make sure you include where you’ve found the information, so that you can cite the source in your essay. Try to identify any gaps in your notes. Do you need to find proof to back up an argument, for example? It can help to write yourself a set of questions that you need to answer. Use trusted sources as references. If you find something useful in a newspaper, check the background source, as some publications do

have a habit of twisting facts. The same goes for websites such as Wikipedia. Once you have your notes, copy and paste them into a new document, and then start moving them into some kind of structure. Introduction (less than 10% of your total word count). This should give a brief overview of what you’re going to cover in the essay, and why. It should indicate that the essay is going to answer the set question, or expand on the title that you’ve chosen. Body of the essay Here you’ll want to fully explain the points you mentioned in the introduction. You’ll likely include quotes and refer to key research material. While you might include opposing views, the main body of the essay should support the conclusion. You might need to subdivide this section with subheaders. Conclusion (up to 15% of the total word count). Here you’ll summarise your main ideas and, if appropriate, answer the question set. It’s often actually easier to leave writing the introduction until the end. That way you’ll know exactly what it is that you’re introducing. You’ll want to make sure the essay flows well, with well-structured paragraphs, and no spelling or grammatical errors. Don’t rely on a computer spellchecker. It is difficult to proofread your own work, so ask a friend or family member to take a look at it for you if possible. By Kate Duggan

Foster a child foster a future

Looking for a rewarding career? We have lots of children who need to be cared for. We always need more foster carers; we’d love to hear from you.

What is fostering? Fostering is when you look after a child or young person who is unable to stay with their own (birth) family.

Who can foster? Almost anyone can become a Foster Carer. Some experience in childcare would be useful, but not essential.

St Patrick is regarded as the founder of Christianity in Ireland and St Patrick’s Day was first celebrated back in the 17th century. Held to mark his death, it was a humble, religious celebration up until the 1920s. An annual military parade started in Dublin in 1931, but the day remained mainly a time for religious reflection. Bars were closed on St Patrick’s Day, as a mark of respect, right up until the 1960s.

(Please telephone for brochure with prices)

Across the pond, in America, St Patrick’s Day became a day for Irish immigrants to celebrate their heritage. By the mid-19th century, parades and festivities were being held. St Patrick’s Day is now celebrated across the world – here in Bedford you can celebrate at many places but here are a few to choose from. St Patrick’ Dance Music from The Three Cups and Malakey. BEDFORD HOSPITALS CHARITY PRIMROSE CARS APPEAL

SATURDAY MARCH 18th at 7.30pm CONCERT OF SONGS AND SCENES FROM GILBERT AND SULLIVAN COMIC OPERAS BY

Ticket To Ride AT THE HOWARD HALL, BEDFORD MODERN SCHOOL, MANTON LANE, BEDFORD Two hours of Savoy favourites, combining the biting wit of W.S. Gilbert and the enchanting music of Sir Arthur Sullivan. Tickets £12.50 each including interval drink available at www.bedfordhospitalcharity.org.uk or call (01234) 781200

Ticket To Ride is one of the world’s most popular board games, there is no doubt about that. It is possibly the only board game from modern times that has come close to matching popularity with the classics… Monopoly, Cluedo etc. The reason for this is that it is very simple to get to grips with while at the same time having a good solid strategy to it as well. You can play a simple game and are just as likely to win as someone playing a complicated strategy. The best games in the world have this mix of easy play that can be made deeper by experienced players. At the start of the game you get a choice of which journeys you would like to try and complete. There are numerous boards with different countries, for example USA, Europe, UK, Africa. To do this you collect different coloured train cards every turn and attempt to fill out a route between the cities you need to get to & from. The simplicity of the game is what makes it so playable, and enjoyable. Every game is different and every game is fun. This really is THE best board game out there for families to play. 55

t's on WhataMK Theatre this month Fantastic Mr Fox Overview

‘You know as well as I do: no-one outfoxes a fox!’

B

oggis, Bunce and Bean, three greedy, smelly, horrid farmers hate the cunning Mr Fox.

Mr Fox is smart, clever and rather fantastic, but he doesn’t realise how determined the farmers are to get revenge. Can he hatch a plan to save his family and friends? Can they outrun the diggers and outsmart the farmers? And can Rabbit shut up long enough not to give the game away? Roald Dahl’s Fantastic Mr Fox is family fun at its finest. A juicy tale of greed, pride and the power of friendship, this flagship production for the Roald Dahl centenary celebrations, promises a dahlicious theatrical feast with live music and songs and gloriumptious designs. A wondercrump treat for the whole family!

Stage Adaptor, Sam Holcroft talks to us about the show

What do you think are the most important themes, and how did you go about bringing these out in your script? In the book, Roald Dahl explores the theme of sharing with others versus being greedy. The farmers are greedy while Mr Fox shares

generously with his friends and family. I was careful to include these themes in the script, too. In fact the whole play centres around Mr Fox and his friends and how their willingness to share and work together saves the day. How do you do justice to a great and well known writer like Dahl without copying the dialogue word for word? It’s very hard to do justice – impossible probably! But you can only do your best, and I tried very hard to capture the spirit of the book. By ‘spirit’ I mean that I tried to recreate how the book made me feel: I felt love for Mr Fox and his friends, I was afraid and excited by his race for survival, and I was delighted that he succeeded and celebrated with his friends, at the end, while the farmers suffered in the rain because of their obsessive greed. Which of the characters do you think is the… Silliest? Rabbit. Smartest? Mr Fox. (Badger is very clever, too) Nastiest? Farmer Bean. Friendliest? Mole. Most sensible? Mrs Fox

Film

Split M. Night Shyamalan burst onto the scene with the exceptionally good Sixth Sense and has made a career of making thrillers with a twist. After that initial kicking in of the door to Hollywood though Shyamalan has had a slowly decreasing critical, and audience, reaction to his films. Split though appears after he has had a revival in his career with low budget success The Visit and is a good solid and enjoyable thriller. Starring James McAvoy the film starts with him kidnapping three teenage girls and holding them prisoner. It soon becomes apparent that he has a few problems and seems to have multiple personalities all fighting for control of his body. Will any of these help the girls or will they have to find their own way of escaping his clutches. There is nothing particularly new in Split but what it does have is a great actor really getting to show his skill by ‘becoming’ different characters and a really terrific sense of tension. It keeps you guessing as to what is going to happen, has enough going on to stop you noticing the inconsistencies and gives you just enough characterisation to care about what happens to the girls.

Naughty Amelia Jane! by Enid Blyton

Some books never fail to entertain generation after generation and the Amelia Jane books by Enid Blyton are no exception. At some point in childhood we all wonder what would happen if our toys were alive. Well in this nursery they are. Amelia Jane is a big ragdoll and she is not just big, she is bad. And the other toys are generally scared of her. Hardly surprising when she does things like throwing pints of milk over other toys on a regular basis! These short chapters almost work as individual short stories which makes it a nice transition for readers to proper ‘chapter books’. Each chapter sees Amelia Jane getting into trouble and being naughty but ultimately learning a lesson: one that she seems destined to forget despite her protestations that she ‘will be good from now’. Lessons that demonstrate to the reader why it is important to be kind and considerate towards others. In the words of Enid Blyton: “I do somehow feel perfectly certain that she can’t be good for long.” By Willow Coby 59

Choosing a veterinary practice

what’s in a name?

W

hen a pet becomes ill, the entire family is affected. Pet owners know that nothing is more important than having a trusted veterinary practice to keep their pets healthy and safe. But how can you be sure that your pet is receiving the highest level of veterinary care?

The Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons sets standards for veterinary practices so that pet owners can see what level of veterinary care they are choosing for their pet. The different levels of veterinary practice are as follows:

The highest accreditation that a veterinary practice can be awarded is Veterinary Hospital status. To be awarded Hospital status, a veterinary practice must: • Pass regular rigorous inspections by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons • Ensure that nursing staff are on-site 24 hours a day • Ensure that veterinary surgeons are available 24 hours a day • Provide specialist equipment for diagnosis and treatment • Employ veterinary surgeons with advanced qualifications and experience

Acorn House is the only Veterinary Hospital in Bedford.

You can check the level of veterinary care offered by your veterinary practice on the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons website (www.rcvs.org.uk). You can even request a tour of your chosen veterinary practice so that you can see what is happening behind the scenes! Your Tarotscopes for March 2017... by Susan Peppiatt Pisces

Feeling in a bit of a rut? It’s time to study something new and open your mind to new things or new people. If you carry on regardless of the difficulties around you without being aware of different possibilities, resentment may grow where there was passion before. Open a new page on the diary, and start just one thing new today

Aries

This month is all about relationships with those that you love, and needs extra work to make things the best that they can be; mostly by being able to spend time with people who are worth the time but usually miss out on the best of you because of the demands of work, money and other, more intensely demanding people.

Taurus

Taking some time to relax this month and having a bit of a different sort of break is important for Taureans to enable them to catch up on sleep, peace and enabling themselves to be themselves again after fairly stressful time over the last year.

Gemini

Pushing forward on a creative streak shows as vital for you this month, as for a long time you would have felt a little blocked, and cramped to fit into a space that someone else has made for you. This may be job or home, or even a hobby. Now’s the time to make it your own.

68

Cancer

Looking for respect from others pays off this month by behaving in a way that brings respect to you, like looking out for others and being responsible for changes for a better way for both loved ones and acquaintances. It looks like you surprise even yourself on how well you do.

Leo

Lots of pressure from family is shown around you now, but it is shown as for your own good that you accept their concern, as they are trying to keep you safe, watching your fitness levels and eating well show as part of this, as well as giving up on risky habits and vices.

Virgo

A home full of love shows itself for Virgos this month, and while it isn’t a surprise who shows that love, it seems that an unusual amount of care is taken for your happiness to swell to great proportions. This seems particularly needed to pull you out of the emotional doldrums which have been around for a while.

Libra

Try to let go of the feeling that everyone is judging you, or watching how well you do in life and laughing when you fail. Other people have their own busy lives to take care of, and in the scale of things that means you aren’t of that much interest to them. By doing things because you want to and not because you feel that you should you rise to a better understanding of yourself and better happiness.

Scorpio

Planning ahead shows as important and preparing for some kind of test is valuable, particularly by trying similar tests and getting used to how you are expected to have to think. Success is easier than you think by taking a trial run, it seems.

Sagittarius

Fulfilment at work and in creative issues which have needed a lot of your time show as finally coming into being this month for Sagittarians, and its been a long time coming, so make sure it’s enjoyed to the fullest.

Capricorn

It looks like you are desperate for a change, and need to let go of emotionally destructive thoughts and obsessions from the past, so that you can move forward with new hope and less fear towards a better and more positive future, just by allowing yourself some self-belief. There’s no better time to start believing that you can do it, so go for it.

Aquarius

Making a thought which has become almost addictive, into a plan for a way ahead seems possible this month, but only if you stop trying to make things too perfect. Life has very few perfections and all of those show as fading after time. Go with the thought that while not quite perfect, a plan is good enough to work, and then put the work into it to make it a success.

GARDENING

Fruit Tree

Management

However, trees planted in urban settings often are forced to grow in stressful environments. This reduces their health, increasing the risk of attack from pests and diseases. Apples, pears, cherries and plums are grown throughout the UK as fruit trees. There are many varieties of fruit trees and ornamentals, but the health management of these trees is very similar. Several issues can cause loss of fruit production and bloom production. Proper pruning, soil amendments and foliar treatment offset these issues.

Affects Leaves, Fruit and Young Shoots. Causes discolouration and die back of leaves and fruit. It can also reduce fruit yield and causes fruit drop.

PEAR RUST

Affects Leaves A fungal disease causing orange spots to appear on the upper surface of leaves along with a powdery orange coat. This weakens the plant, but is considered more of an aesthetic issue.

APHIDS

Affect Leaves and Shoots Leaves and shoots curl and distort where aphids feed. on the plant by sucking out the contents. They also cause sooty mould which feeds on the sugary honeydew produced by the aphids.

F

ruit trees are a popular choice as amenity trees, because they provide fruit, benefit wildlife and bloom with attractive flowers in spring.

MOTHS

wAffect Fruit, Leaves and Flowers Caterpillars curl leaves using silk thread and feed within, causing the leaves to die. Codling moth larvae feed solely on fruit, damaging the flesh and causing the fruit to drop early.

Management Pruning

There are many options when pruning and training fruit trees. We carefully prune out any diseased or dying areas of growth whilst maintaining a good shape. We always prune back to a growth point (bud). We perform crown pruning trees in the winter when flower production is not a primary concern. We can also prune in summer after bloom production. Research shows that pruning not only tidies up the appearance of your trees but can also reduce pest and disease infection rates. Treatments There are other services that can be offered in addition to pruning to maintain the health of fruit trees: • Phosphite sprays increase the rate of healing in tree wounds. • Soil analysis and amendment improves conditions for continuing growth. • Foliar spray programmes further protect against pests and disease.

BARTLETT TREE EXPERTS A Very Brown Hedge Indeed Aphids are one of the most common and troublesome of all garden insect pests. They attack a large number of garden plants throughout the country and are recently causing much disfigurement to ornamental conifer hedges. Commonly known as Greenfly and Blackfly, these aphids feed on hedges, sucking the sap of the plant and can spread several viruses, causing severe dieback. Cypress Aphid is currently troublesome and pre-dominantly affects conifer hedging. Damage inflicted on conifer hedges by the aphid Cinara cupressi is severe and can lead to large brown patches on the hedge. This leads to localised foliage death, reducing the aesthetic look of the hedge. As the aphid is active from May to October it is important to catch this problem early and apply treatments to stop its spread. At the first sign of brown patches call us for a free consultation and professional advice.

GARDENING

TOP TIPS for keeping lawns tip top

E

very spring gardeners dust off the mower to give their grass its first cut, only to find a mass of moss, thatch, pests and weeds invading their lawn.

Moss is a problem for most, especially in the mild, damp weather of autumn and early winter. Most prevalent in shady areas, which are not adequately drained, action is needed now or it will compete with grass and weaken your lawn. Try to catch any moss infestation early, by raking out patches and treating them as they appear. Use a good-quality spring-tine rake or, if the area is very large, hire an electric or petrol-driven rake to make the job easier. Improve your drainage, aerating the lawn by spiking, to discourage further build-up of moss. Make holes in the lawn to a depth of 10-15cm (4-6in), using a garden fork or purpose-built lawn aerator, and fill in the holes with sharp sand to boost drainage and reduce compaction. You can also use moss killers, which will turn the moss black but not kill the grass. There 74

are combined fertilisers and moss killers, with formulations specifically for spring or autumn use, which needs to be applied when the soil is moist and the grass is dry. By mid-spring you should be able to rake out any remaining moss and oversow bare patches with grass seed. Thatch is another common problem. It’s a mat of dead grass which forms on the surface of many lawns, separating the living grass from the soil, which reduces aeration and impedes the entry of water and nutrients. Remove it regularly by raking with a spring-tine rake at least twice a year, in spring and autumn. To keep your lawn healthy, feed it annually in spring, applying fertiliser when the soil is moist, during showery weather, or watering it in. Carry out hand-weeding with a daisy grubber or hand fork if there are only a few weeds. Raking will also help stop the spread of creeping weeds. If problems persist, feed and weed the lawn in early summer using a combined dressing.

BEDFORD “It is fair to say that Northampton Saints have proven to be our knights in shining armour on this occasion. London Welsh’s expulsion from the league not only meant the loss of five valuable points but also the prospect of losing revenue associated with the fixture. To be able to host a team of Northampton’s quality will be great for us and I’m sure the fans will love it as well.”

B

edford Blues have a March to remember as they host two intriguing games that will be anything from ‘friendly’ as they are advertised!

After it was confirmed in January that London Welsh would cease to exist as a professional club after being refused permission to stay in the Greene King IPA Championship, Bedford Blues were left with a gap in the fixture list on 17th March. However, the club immediately set about finding a suitable opponent to fulfil the Friday night fixture and they’ve captured one of the biggest teams in the country – Northampton Saints. Bedford Blues Director of Rugby Mike Rayer said: “I’m sure that everybody will be thrilled that Jim Mallinder and Northampton Saints have agreed to pay us a visit at Goldington Road and resume our friendly rivalry.

82

With the Anglo-Welsh Cup final set to take place on the same weekend as Bedford’s non-fixture, the majority of Premiership clubs are also without a game. Northampton, who are still well placed to take a top four spot in the Aviva Premiership, are keen keep momentum flowing at Franklin’s Gardens and see the encounter as a great opportunity to prevent any potential ringrust. Northampton Saints Director of Rugby Jim Mallinder said, “The unfortunate circumstances surrounding London Welsh have had a significant knock-on effect for clubs like Bedford and we were happy to step in to help the Blues out. With no match ourselves that weekend we will be using it as an opportunity to give our squad some game time ahead of our important Aviva Premiership run-in.” The Saints last visited Goldington Road for a preseason friendly in August 2013 when the visitors ran out 21-45

B

BLUES winners and the encounter - which kicks off at 7.45pm - will be the perfect start to the weekend at Goldington Road which also includes the annual beer festival along with all the final Six Nations matches on the Saturday. Tickets for the game against Northampton Saints can be bought online with the standard early bird discount applying. Season Ticket holders, pre-purchased tickets and hospitality guests will gain entry for the game with no additional charge.

On Tuesday 28th March, the Goldington Road gates will be open once again for the annual Mobbs Memorial Match as Bedford Blues prepare to go into battle against The British Army (Kick Off 7:45pm). This year’s match also takes on extra special meaning as it marks the one-hundred-year anniversary since Lieutenant Colonel Edgar Mobbs DSO - a true England rugby legend and a genuine hero of World War I - died during the Third Battle of Ypres while attacking a machine gun post. Tickets for the whole event, including the warm-up fixture, community matches, The Band of the Parachute Regiment, a feast of military attractions, Bedford Modern celebration and the main match are available online at the

cost of just £10 for adults and £2 for children Under 18. Entrance to the stand is available on a first come first served basis with only ground entry tickets available to purchase. Army personnel are discounted to £5 on production of a current ID card and student entry is £3; both ticket groups are only available for purchase on match day. Looking ahead to the fixture, Blues Chairman Geoff Irvine said: “We are delighted to be hosting the Mobbs Memorial Match, particularly on such a poignant anniversary. The game is one of rugby’s most historic fixtures and we are all excited about welcoming the British Army to Goldington Road once again as we honour the memory of Edgar Mobbs.”

To purchase tickets for the match please visit www.bedfordrugby.co.uk - All profits from the evening will be donated to Mobbs Memorial Fund with bucket collections on behalf of the Army Benevolent Fund. 83

New child car seat regulations

T

T

Campaign from March 1st he government has announced that the penalties for being caught using a phone behind the wheel will double in 2017 – that means you will now get 6 points and a £200 fine. For people who have been driving for less than two years this could mean a ban for one offence. Driving while using a mobile phone is considered one of the ‘fatal four’ driving offences, along with speeding, drink/drug driving and not wearing a seatbelt You don’t need your mobile phone while driving #putitaway

he new regulations mean that only children 125cm or more and weighing more than 22kg can travel in a car on a backless booster seat. The law is being changed as experts believe that booster seats are unsuitable for younger children. They have been put in place due to concerns over whether small children are held securely in their backless booster seat. If you’ve got an existing booster seat you will be able to use it without breaking any rules, but safety experts recommended you buy your child a high-backed booster seat, which offer more protection in a side-impact crash.

Children under 15 months must be in a rearfacing car seat which can be then moved to forward-facing once they are over 15 months old. Only EU-approved height-based child car seats can be used in the UK. These have a label showing a capital ‘E’ in a circle and ‘R129’.

Eagles The

Since the last Beds Life entry, the club has continued its unbeaten run. Stretching back to December 14th. January 21st saw the long league trip to Fleet Town postponed due to a frozen pitch, but despite the gap in games the Eagles returned to winning ways against Aylesbury FC at the Eyrie on January 28th.

S

aturday 14th January saw the Eagles first ever pay what you like day. Despite the cold weather, the Bedford public came out in force to see Jon Taylor’s side score a valuable 3:0 home win against Marlow. The gate that cold winter afternoon was 437 and was a journey back to a decade ago when the Eagles were regularly hitting over 400 people in attendance for fixtures. Times have changed since then, but Taylor’s Eagles are certainly doing their best to bring the good times back to the Eyrie.

86

February started with a tough trip to AFC Dunstable, currently sitting in fifth place and the last playoff spot. It was hard to predict which way the fixture would go, with the Eagles having won the league fixture earlier in the season, but the hosts having won both cup fixtures in the Emirates FA Cup and Bedfordshire Senior Cup. The final score on the day of 2:2 was a fair result and Bedford battled hard to come back from behind twice to secure a valuable point and keep their playoff chances alive. The afternoon was over shadowed by an injury to Club Captain, Tommy Hull. The club would like to thank everyone for their kind messages of support from the non league community, following the distressing events of yesterday afternoon for Club Captain, Tommy Hull. We would like to reassure all that these well wishes are being passed on to Tommy where possible. The club would like to stress, despite online speculation, that Tommy did not collapse and remained conscious throughout the episode.

Around the 70th minute, his chest felt heavy and breathing was difficult, but did not suffer to the extent that has been reported in certain online pieces. Tommy was treated for his issues at hospital but returned home later that evening where he was monitored by a 24 hour ECG monitor to make sure his heart is regular. Speaking today, Manager Jon Taylor said “we all hope Tommy makes a swift recovery. As club captain, he will be a miss to our important team spirit, but he knows we are all behind him in however long his recovery should take.”

productions, and a Phoenix Roadshow disco afterwards. To book your tickets, please contact Angie Scutchings on 07767 488797. Are you looking for somewhere to hold your event? The Wallace suite at the Eyrie could be your ideal venue. Whether it be party, wedding reception, fundraising event or anything, we have the deal for you. Please contact Angie or Ash Scutchings on 07767 488797 for further information.

The club would also like to pay thanks to AFC Dunstable for their assistance with Tommy’s situation and thank Bianca Hewer, John Bell and all the medical team for their help. You can follow the Eagles on social media via the following links: https://twitter.com/bedfordtown https://www.facebook.com/bedfordtown https://www.instagram.com/bedfordtownfc/ January 27th saw another popular quiz night at the Eyrie. For further information on when the next one is, either 24th March or 7th April, please contact Gerry on 01234 381213. On Saturday 11th march, the popular Murder Mystery night returns to the Eyrie. Tickets are £40, which includes a full three course meal, entertainment via the WhoDunIt Money Penny 87
