ith some lovely early sunny days already enjoyed, we can only hope for more to come in May!
Time to get out and about, so if you fancy a health kick, it’s National Walking Month so take inspiration from some of the guided walking tours available in Bedford on p56. Or if you fancy some relaxing river time on The Ouse, you can book an Afternoon Tea Cruise with The Swan Hotel, they have dates all through summer.
Our charity of the month is Canine Partners, they partner specially trained assistance dogs with people who have physical disabilities and seek new ‘puppy parents’ to provide homes and support training for the puppies. More on p16. This year local countryside charity, CPRE Bedfordshire, celebrates 30 years and to mark this, they are running a photography competition, Bedfordshire – A Changing Landscape– first prize is £100 – more on p80. On the leisure front… Our What’s On Guide lists the May events – also Bedford 153rd Regatta 6th is on May, Castle Comedy May 11th, Community Herb Garden Open Day May 20th, and Brooks Hair and Beauty show on the 4th – and if you are feeling lucky, we have a fabulous competition to win tickets to the Kaiser Chiefs in August playing in Bedford Park! Enjoy the May edition!

ring nteeSupport VoforluVictim (VS) is the independent charity for people affected by crime and traumatic events in England and Wales. Our specialist teams provide individual and independent support to enable people to cope and recover from the effects of crime.
Our volunteers in Bedfordshire play a vital role within Victim Support, providing emotional and practical support to people affected by crime. This is achieved by providing face to face and/ or telephone support to victims of crime. Our volunteers generously give their time to help people move beyond crime. Their support helps people feel stronger, empowered, understood and able to move forward with their lives. All we request, commitment wise is 2 hours a week for a minimum of 1 year. This time is flexible around victims, volunteers and staff. This could be daytime, evenings or weekends. We support you by providing a mandatory 4 day nationally approved training programme along with further specialised courses should you wish. Out of pocket expenses will be paid in line with our expenses policy. We ensure that you have regular dialogue with your manager to discuss your volunteering and we will be respectful, listen to you and clearly communicate. At Victim Support we ensure the safety of everyone who volunteers with us. We have access to excellent inductions and learning opportunities to help you develop and grow in your role.

Alistair Burt, your Local MP... IMPACT OF THE FUTURE AND PAST
T
he Easter break is behind us. A subdued Parliament has returned to a difficult summer term, remembering the horror of the terrorist attack, the implications once again of the Middle East and the legislative burden of delivering an exit from the European Union. Whatever the next couple of years brings at Westminster, life will not be the same again.
But the point about the risk of losing the reference to why we have an egg hunt in the first place was well made. I suspect there are many growing up knowing more about the Easter bunny than the Cross, and I think that is a shame. I was lucky enough to be brought up in a Christian family, and go to a school where we had an assembly with hymns, so the weaving of our country’s history with Christianity was revealed throughout my education.
But there we are. Life changes, for Parliament, the country and in individual lives up and down the country. Our world is made up of questions about how we progress, and what we take with us, or leave behind.
It explains why every town and village has a church, explains our monarchy’s history, our island’s struggles for identity in a European continent with a clash between Christian sects and of course why we have ‘Christmas’ and ‘Easter’ at all.
While most of us welcome change, and confront the difficult changes with resolution, we want some things to remain the same. And one of these, I believe firmly, is an understanding of our past reflected in the country’s overwhelmingly Christian heritage.
You cannot understand England, or the United Kingdom, without an understanding of the Christian faith, just as I do not think we should now allow our young people to leave school without understanding the impact of different faiths on the wider world.
The row over the National Trusts ‘airbrushing out’ of the word Easter, in reference to the egg hunts at various NT venues brought this issue to light again. It has come up before in arguments about the renaming of Christmas as ‘Winterval’ once upon a time and surfaces occasionally with stories like the Easter Egg hunt. As often the case, the facts behind a tabloid story were not quite as they seemed. Yes, the NT had renamed its hunt after its sponsor, and it was thoughtless not to have called it Cadbury’s Easter Egg Hunt, but a glance at it’s website would have seen many references to Easter.
Accordingly we should cherish the names of Christian festivals. You do not have to be a believer to recognise the impact of faith in the UK, but we do our future a disservice if we remove, however innocently, the past.

Supporting people
on their journey out of homelessness
A
re you or a friend or family member facing homelessness?
King’s Arms Project delivers services to empower people on their journey out of homelessness by providing outreach, accommodation and opportunity; all specifically developed to help people out of poverty. KAP’s ‘Hub & Spoke’ service has been operational since July 2016 and is celebrating a number of success stories of people who have come through the service. The Hub is a five bedroom house which provides emergency short term supported accommodation, giving priority to first time homeless individuals for up to four months. Each service user has a single room in the house, which offers a family-feel, balancing autonomy and community. Personalised support is provided and can continue for up to six months after moving into independent accommodation. The Spoke offers floating support to clients that move on from the Hub or already live in in independent private accommodation in the community. 10
At the point of application, one of our clients was unemployed, disabled by anxiety and had low self-esteem, partly due to learning difficulties. Since living at The Hub, he has secured a one-bed flat and is now successfully living independently and engaging well with our ‘Spoke’ floating support service. He is managing his own home and growing increasingly in confidence and assertiveness. Now he’s engaging in KAP’s Pathways to Employment Jobs Club in preparation for employment after many years of being unable to work. Another of our clients was unlawfully dismissed by their employer of over two decades. They racked up some debt due to being unemployed and eventually lost their home. After they moved into The Hub, we were able to provide support to help them quickly regain independence. They have now moved on successfully and have recently been offered full time employment once again. The Hub & Spoke service is open for referrals and more information and a link to the referral form can be accessed through our website: http:/www.kingsarmsproject.org/hubandspoke Hub & Spoke, Kings Arms Project, 245 Ampthill Road, Bedford MK42 9AZ | 01234 340544

The new pound coin
re you a coin hoarder? If so, this is a warning. Empty your piggybanks, coin jars, scrabble behind the sofa to gather your pound coins together – then spend or save them before October.
has arrived
With the new 12-sided £1 coin just having hit the streets, the current round version will stop being legal tender (and so won’t be accepted in shops) on 15 October 2017. After that, if you still have any old £1 coins, you won’t be able to spend them. Of course, you’ve a few months left yet to sort it but it’s worth doing now. Many banks and building societies have said they will continue to accept the old pound coin even after 15 October. But Barclays, HSBC, Lloyds/Bank of Scotland, Nationwide, RBS and Santander, said they’d only do this for their own customers. Carting a bag of coins to the bank is a real faff – particularly if there isn’t a branch near where you live so it’s much better simply to spend or save them now. If you’re saving though, don’t abandon your savings plan. Simply take the pound coins out and replace them with a note or other coins of a similar value – then keep on saving…
What about old fivers – aren’t they also being scrapped? Yes. The older, larger fiver is leaving us even sooner than the pound – the withdrawal date is set for 5 May.
12
Unlike the pound coin, the £5 note is produced by the Bank of England and not the Royal Mint. This means that, even after it’s been scrapped, the old fiver is covered by what’s effectively a Bank of England ‘buy back guarantee’ – old banknotes officially hold their face value “for all time”.
So if you’re stuck with an old fiver after 5 May, you can still exchange it at face value with the Bank of England in London, in person or by post and while they’re under no obligation to do so, many banks and building societies say they will accept the old fivers from their own customers. But in practice, sorting it after 5 May will be a hassle. So if you can, check if you’ve got any old fivers and use them while you’re able to. Here’s the dates of all the forthcoming currency changes: 28 MARCH 2017 New ’12-sided’ £1 coin entered circulation 5 MAY 2017 Old ‘non-polymer’ £5 note withdrawn 15 OCTOBER 2017 Old £1 coin withdrawn SEPTEMBER 2017 (DATE TBC) New polymer £10 note launched 2020 (DATE TBC) New polymer £20 note launched Martin Lewis is the Founder and Chair of MoneySavingExpert.com. TIME AFTER TIME BOB & ANN KEPT ‘PUTTING IT OFF’ Leaving their children’s Future in the hands of FATE Bob & Ann both 76 owned their home worth £220,000. Bob & Ann thought they had planned well but after Bob died Ann developed dementia and was moved to a care home, the house was sold and the money used to fund the fees. Ann lived in the care home for 3½ years in which time over £200,000 of her money was spent funding her care, when Ann died only £14,320 was left. Stories like this are common, the sad thing is Bob and Ann ‘knew about’ the benefits of ‘Protective Property Trust Wills’ but ‘time after time’ kept ‘Putting Off’ upgrading their old Wills.
With 'Protective Property Trusts' in their Will’s Bob & Ann would have legally protected 50% of the value of their house.

need more ‘puppy parents’
THEY will help with the housework, load a washing machine and open doors – but now the region’s cleverest puppies are calling for your help.
Charity Canine Partners is looking for special volunteer ‘puppy parents’ that can look after puppies that are training to become assistance dogs for physically disabled people. Carol Lloyd has been a puppy parent for 10 years and is currently looking after her 13th puppy, 11-month-old Labrador Milo. She says she loves helping to train and socialise the puppies. “I would recommend being a puppy parent. It’s a really nice way of having a dog. It’s fantastic seeing the difference a dog makes to someone’s life,” said Carol. The 56-year-old cleaner from Wootton, Bedfordshire joined the charity’s team of volunteers after moving to the area from Milton Keynes. She said: “I liked the idea of having a dog but also having a purpose to that. “Rather than having a pet dog, we have Canine Partners’ puppies.” Carol has been looking after Milo since he was eight weeks old and she has been teaching him the basic skills he needed for life as an assistance dog, while ensuring he was always well-behaved. She has taken him on busses and trains and visited supermarkets, cafes, restaurants, shopping centres, parks and banks. And they are making sure they met lots of other people and animals. Carol and Milo also attend puppy training classes and they have home visits from Bedford satellite trainer Lorraine Lotan who gives Carol guidance on the charity’s reward-based training techniques – praising the puppy and giving it lots of treats, toys and playtime when they get something right. When he is about 13 months old he will go to one of Canine Partners’ advanced training centres in West Sussex or Leicestershire to develop the skills he is learning with his puppy parent. Mum-of-two Carol said: “The first time a puppy leaves you for its advanced training is the worst but it makes all the heart ache of the puppy leaving worthwhile when you see the difference it will make to someone’s life.”
Now she is calling for more people to sign up and join the growing band of volunteers. She added: “I really enjoy being a puppy parent and in Bedford we have a fantastic support group so you’re never on your own. We also have a great satellite trainer in Lorraine.” It comes after the group hosted a special puppy party which gave people the chance to meet the puppies and existing volunteers and watch demonstrations showcasing some of the skills puppy parents teach the dogs. Canine Partners’ Bedford puppy trainer Lorraine Lotan said: “Our puppy party was a great success. “We had loads of fun and met lots of new people who were interested in becoming a puppy parent and supporting our charity as part of our fantastic Bedford team. “Training the pups is very rewarding. We have weekly training sessions and I regularly see the pups individually to help and support the puppy parents. “Knowing the dogs we have trained will go on to change someone’s life and bring them so much joy and happiness is a fantastic feeling.” There’s still time to sign up as a volunteer puppy parent for Canine Partners. Puppy parents receive full ongoing support, both at their homes and at puppy training classes. Food, equipment, vet bills and temporary holiday care is provided. And there’s another chance to meet the team at the Bedford group’s summer show June 24 at Happy Dog Training in Clapham. For more information call 01730 716017 or visit caninepartners.org.uk/ puppyparties. 17

So on Thursday May 11th head to the Gordon Arms Ent Shed in Bedford where there will be guaranteed laughs…….you’d be mad to miss it! Myths
regarding Heart Disease I would know if I had high blood pressure or high cholesterol.
Risk factors are called silent killers, having no obvious associated symptoms. When high blood pressure presents as a symptom like headaches ,it may be abnormally high at that stage. Early treatment is essential to preventing complications. The same goes for high cholesterol. A person can be thin and and still have high cholesterol.
Heart disease treats men and women the same.
Heart disease can affect the sexes very differently. Although many people experience the classic symptoms when they have a heart attack, there are also less typical symptoms, and are more common among women. Older women usually present with classical chest pain. If you have risk factors and have new or changing symptoms, even atypical- Talk to your doctor.
Younger Women Aren’t at Risk
One common myth is that younger women are not vulnerable and that it is a disease of older women and men. Cardiac risk factors- including obesity, Type II diabetes, and hypertension -- are showing up earlier now in women. There tends to be a 10-year gap in the age at which heart disease occurs in men and women with men suffering in their mid-50s and women in their mid-60s. 22
Estrogen has a complex role in the prevention of heart disease, but exactly how it works isn’t clear. But using HRT beyond the menopause is an important cardiac risk factor.
Exercise is too risky if you have heart disease.
After a heart attack, people are encouraged into cardiac rehabilitation . Exercise reduces the progression of heart disease. Starting with 10 minutes of exercise daily and increasing it weekly by 10 minutes until they are getting at least 30 minutes of moderate activity most days.
Once I Have Heart Disease, That’s It
Absolutely not – Exercising, eating a healthy diet containing fruits and vegetables, limiting processed foods, not smoking, can go a long way toward heart disease prevention. It is never too late to treat heart disease, small lifestyle changes are key factors in preventing heart disease and controlling risk factors. Why keep on guessing- If you are concerned – We are here to help. Senior Snippets Tips to avoiding the temptation of using mobile devices while driving
ast month, the Fixed Penalty Notice for using a handheld mobile phone while driving increased to a £200 fine and 6 points on your license. Tips to help avoid the temptation of using a mobile device while driving.
• Turn your phone off or set the ringer to silent before you start driving to remove temptation to respond. Make the glove compartment the phone compartment. • If it is necessary to use your phone for any reason, park safely and make sure to turn your engine off before you make any calls. • Do not make any calls or send any text messages when you are stopped at traffic lights or queuing in traffic.
• Don’t call people if you know they are driving. If you call someone and they tell you that they are driving, ask them to call you back when safe. Even if you have a hands-free device, it is up to the discretion of the police if think you’re distracted or not in control of your vehicle. You are still at risk of being stopped and penalised even if you are using a hands-free device. Although it can tempting, the implications for using your phone while driving are costly. The best way to ensure your safety and those on the road around you is to turn your phone off and put it away until you have reached your destination. e r a C r Foste Fortnight
F
oster Care Fortnight is the UK’s biggest foster care awareness raising campaign, delivered by leading fostering charity, The Fostering Network. Established for almost 20 years, the campaign showcases the commitment, passion and dedication of foster carers. It also supports fostering services to highlight the need for more foster carers. 9,070 new foster families are needed in the next 12 months alone to care for a range of children, with the greatest need being for foster carers for older children, sibling groups, disabled children and unaccompanied asylum seeking children.
Foster carers can, and do, make a real difference to the lives of children and young people who come into their care. 30
They make this difference by working with a range of other professionals in the ‘team around the child’ to provide security, stability and support at a crucial time in the child’s life. They will often provide children with their first experience of positive family life. Foster carers can look after up to three children at once, unless exceptions are made or where there is a bigger group of brothers and sisters. The number and age of their own children will help fostering services to advise on the number and age of fostered children they look after. There are many different types of foster care. Some foster carers will care for children in an emergency situation, until longer-term arrangements can be made. Others will look after children on a short-term basis, until the child can return home or move on to a permanent placement. Many foster carers care for children on a long-term basis, often for the whole of their childhoods.
Foster carers will also usually specialise in caring for children of a particular age. For example, some will foster babies or very young children before they are adopted or move in with a friend or family member. Other foster carers look after primary school aged children, or prefer to offer a home to teenagers.
Foster carer skills
Some foster carers develop the skills to look after disabled children, or specialise in caring for unaccompanied asylum seeking children or young parents and their babies. Others focus on caring for groups of brothers and sisters. As well as providing day-to-day care for children and young people, foster carers are expected to advocate on behalf of the child, support their educational, health and social wellbeing, manage sometimes challenging behaviour, promote contact with birth family members, keep records, attend meetings and work with the wider team, as well as developing their own skills.
Have you considered
fostering?
Foster carers commit time and energy to be there for children in their care. Being someone for them to trust, talk to and take pride in their achievements is important, as is having the patience, resilience and confidence to deal with situations which do not go to plan. Foster carers also need to be observant, recognise when they need to step in or seek assistance to help deal with a particular situation. Foster carers are also encouraged to reflect on their actions to learn from experiences and continuously develop their skills. All foster carers receive training before being approved to foster, to give them the tools and compliment their skills and experience to help meet the needs of any child in their care. Throughout a foster carer’s career there will be opportunities and expectations to complete further training, as well as ongoing support.
At Children First Fostering Agency we are currently recruiting caring individuals who want to make a difference to a child or young person’s life. In return you will receive professional ongoing training, 24 hour support, respite breaks and a generous fostering allowance. If you are interested in fostering and have a spare room for a child, please contact us at:

FOOD & DRINK
Eat in season this May
S
pring marks the transition from winter to summer, bringing with it inspirational new season produce and making eating local and seasonal remarkably easy. Sandy Boyd from Summerhill Farm Shops in Cardington gives us his tips on what to eat this May.
Dishes are lighter and packed full of freshness and there’s nothing quite like the extra flavour, crunch and juiciness you get from in-season fruit and vegetables. May is the time for flavour filled crunchy green salads with juicy peas, mange tout and broad beans. Enjoy radishes, rocket, watercress, mint, fennel and artichokes for extra flavour and freshness. It’s also the time to say goodbye to the hearty root vegetable purees of winter and hello to lighter, fresher and versatile spring vegetable soups. Capture the freshness of young seasonal veg and herbs including parsley, tarragon and 32
basil. Add white beans and fresh tomatoes to create simple and traditional spring soups full of flavour. Or go green with a lovely, leafy spinach recipe for an intriguing bright-green soup. Britain also has the best asparagus in the world, and May is when it really comes into season, however, it has a very short window. Miss it and you’ll end up eating asparagus with much less flavour. New potatoes are at their peak, served simply seasoned as a side along with steamed al dente asparagus as the perfect accompaniments to succulent spring lamb, which is also at its best. May is also the start of strawberry season (hurrah!) so it’s time to tuck into delicious summer desserts such as the traditional Eton Mess. Visit Summerhill Farm Shop in Cardington for fresh local and seasonal fruit and vegetables, locally reared meat and artisan produce. www.summerhillfarmshop.co.uk

Pork and Mussel
Cataplana Nick Coffer – Food blogger, author and presenter of “Weekend Kitchen” on BBC Three Counties Radio
Don’t worry if you don’t own a Cataplana – a normal skillet or saucepan with a lid will be perfect. Ingredients 500g cubed pork shoulder 150g chopped chorizo 1 large onion, chopped 2 cloves garlic, finely chopped 1 large tin of chopped tomatoes 1 bag of fresh English mussels, cleaned. Discard any which are already open before cooking. 25ml dry white wine or sherry Chopped fresh parsley to garnish
Method Brown the cubed pork in the pan on a medium heat with a little oil. Add in the onion and the chorizo and continue to cook out for 5 or 6 minutes. Add the tomatoes and a good glug of water and give it a stir. Simmer for 1 hour, covered, until the pork is very tender. If at this stage it is looking a little bit liquid, turn up the heat to thicken the sauce. Conversely, add a little water if it is getting dry. Add in the wine or sherry, chuck in the mussels and continue to cook until they have all opened. Do not eat any which have failed to open at this stage as this is a sign of them not being fresh enough. Stir in the chopped parsley right at the end and serve with crusty fresh bread to mop up the lovely juices.

…All are warmly invited to Zero Carbon Castle Castle’s Community Herb Garden ‘open day’ in Bedford on Saturday May 20th If you haven’t walked the length of Castle Road you may not have come across the community herb garden on the Victorian roundabout where Castle Road meets Rothsay Road. It was planted by community sustainability group Zero Carbon Castle about 10 years ago and is still looking and smelling good thanks to a small group of volunteers. It attracts local cooks, the odd herbalist and photographer and even a local spider enthusiast on a dry day. Many people find it’s a lovely place to just stop and sit. People are always welcome to bring scissors to snip a few herbs for their own use, leaving plenty for others too of course. (No trowels for digging up please). You won’t find herbs this fresh and fragrant wrapped in plastic from the supermarket and there’s more variety here too. The herb garden is accessible all the time but May 20th offers stalls and talks, something for everyone and is open to all. There will be a herb sale, a plant swap (bring your spare seedlings!) a cake sale, and at about 12 noon Jane Perrone, Gardening Editor at The Guardian, will be give her top local foraging advice. The vent will run from 10.00 until about 3.00 (ending sooner if we sell out of everything). Proceeds go to the maintenance and restocking of the garden which is for everyone’s use and enjoyment. For more information: 07914 606816 or see Abundance Bedford on Facebook. Do get in touch if you’d like to join our volunteer list too. We are selffunded and rely entirely on local helpers. 40

for Revision Ready
E
xam time is stressful for the whole family. So what’s the best way to cope?
There’s no way round it, the answer has to be planning and preparation.
Set up your revision timetable as early as possible, that way you can pace yourself. It’s too tempting to put everything off then face a lastminute panic.
How do you study best? Some people prefer to spend a whole day on one subject, others prefer to break their time into smaller blocks and tackle several subjects in short burst. Whichever you choose, make sure you take a short break every hour or so. Pop outside, stretch your legs, have a drink and maybe a snack. Oxygen, nutritious food and water are essential for concentration and mental alertness.
Effective brain function relies on neurotransmitters, which are chemicals made from amino acids. These are found in food rich in good quality protein, like lean meat, fish, soya and beans. In order to convert the amino acids into neurotransmitters the body also need vitamins and minerals, so top up on fruit and vegetables. Refined sugar, found in sweets and chocolate releases glucose too quickly into the bloodstream and this can cause mood swings. Emotions run high around exam time anyway, so it is better to snack on nuts, seeds and fruit, which provide a slow, steady release of glucose.
Emotions run high around exam time anyway, so it is better to snack on nuts, seeds and fruit, which provide a slow, steady release of glucose.
EDUCATION Our brains also depend on proper hydration to function optimally. Brain cells require a delicate balance between water and various elements to operate. Research has found that if we’re even slightly dehydrated we find it more difficult to focus. Aim to drink around up to 1.5-2 litres of water, diluted fruit juice or herbal teas per day. Drinks rich in caffeine, such as Red Bull or coffee trigger production of the stress hormone cortisol which can make you feel even more edgy and nervous, and make it harder to focus and find the right words under exam pressure. Gentle exercise, such as walking, or cycling, in between study improves the blood circulation to the brain and actually relieves stress, making you feel more relaxed. On the day of an exam focus on breathing; slow deep breaths in and out will help to reduce levels of the stress hormone cortisol. Try not to engage in pre-or post exam discussion, as this can make you feel anxious.
Put your trust in Polam
If you’re well prepared and well-rested then you are ready. But remember they are only exams. They are one measure of your ability taken at one point in time. They do not relate to who you are as a person, or how well you will ultimately do in life. All you can ever do is try your best on the day. Good luck.
What type of learner are you?
Visual learners – prefer note cards and tend to map out information on paper. Auditory learners – prefer to read their notes aloud, and listen to them being played back. Kinaesthetic learners need action – Record your voice and play back the information while walking. Take revision notes to the gym and read while running on a treadmill, even sitting on a swing reading notes can work.

Where to...
M
Walk
ay is National Walking Month and the benefits of regular walking are many and can help support a healthier life – walking has been shown to lower the risk of heart disease, stroke and even some types of cancer, and it’s good for the soul too. Although the aim of 10,000 steps a day is a good benchmark, you can benefit from far less than that – even those with a sedentary job can achieve 3,000 to 4,000 steps on an average day. Why not swap your weekly coffee morning for a walking chat? You can always take the coffee with you... or join a local walking group? Setting goals and monitoring your progress can be motivating. Whether you decide to gradually increase the distance you walk or improve your speed, seeing your progress is rewarding. Wearable technology like FitBit and the many free apps that you can download to your smartphone can help. A pedometer app will count the steps when you simply walk with the phone in your pocket. Choose safe areas for your walks and make sure you can see where you’re stepping – a sprained ankle can set you back weeks! To find your local health walk scheme, visit Walking For Health www.walkingforhealth.org.uk or Ramblers www.ramblers.org.uk Did you know? During the holidays, 15 National Parks in the UK run free guided walks suitable for the whole family www.nationalparks.gov.uk 44

Colt Express Colt Express puts you in, and on, a train in the Wild West with a bunch of other criminals. The game is for up to 6 players, all competing with each other to get the loot and to ruin their fellow thieves’ plans. Every game consists of 5 rounds where each player plays 3+ cards (depending on a train card) that determines their actions for the turn and places them in a pile with every other player. Then each card is played one at a time and the action completed. The trick is to not only try and follow your own plans but to also try to take into account what the other players may do to screw up yours and to mess up theirs as well. What makes this game different though is that the board isn’t really a board. The train is a 3D one, you actually make the train so that your bandits can actually run up and down the train, inside and on the roof. Colt Express is a simple game with an easy to learn mechanic that can be picked up by adults and children alike, and the ‘board’ will certainly attract children to playing the game!

Swing’s the thing, the region’s premier big band, are back for their second season at “The Place” in Bradgate Road, Bedford. All three shows in 2016 were sell outs and 2017 promises to be just as popular. The season starts on Thursday 29th June with the 2nd part of our Sinatra Trilogy “The Main Event” Those of you who saw our “Sinatra at the Sands” show last year will be pleased to know that Mel Peake is back with us once again, this time to recreate the 1974 concert that famously epitomised Sinatra’s dramatic comeback following a brief period of retirement. We move forward 8 years from Las Vegas to New York City and instead of the Count Basie Orchestra we have the Woody Herman Orchestra. Sinatra was always careful to use the finest musicians available and just as Basie’s band was at its best in 1966 for the Las Vegas concerts, the band making the headlines in 1974 was Woody Herman and his Young Thundering Herd. Remarkably, Sinatra included no fewer than 12 new songs in this show, including the one he affectionately refers to as “The National Anthem”. THIS IS A FANTASTIC OPPORTUNITY TO HEAR BIG BAND SWING AT ITS VERY BEST, CLOSE UP & ACCOUSTIC. BOOK NOW TO AVOID DISAPPOINTMENT.

Review Beauty & The Beast
Beauty & The Beast isn’t even on my radar as one of the great Disney animated movies so it definitely wasn’t on my radar to go and see the live action version, even after the good remaking of Cinderella and the excellent Jungle Book sort of live action version. So I went into it with little enthusiasm and no real interest, a feeling that wasn’t changed in the first half hour or so of the movie. Oh it looks good and Luke Evans was stealing every scene he was in with ease but it didn’t really change my original thinking. Then it sort of crept up on me, once Belle and The Beast start interacting the better parts of the film begin to be greater than the lesser. Dan Stevens as The Beast becomes more interesting once he has to try and show more than rage as an emotion and the slow build of the romance between him and Belle is handled really well, even though we all know where it is going to end.

Review Noughts and Crosses by Marjorie Blackman
Marjorie Blackman’s award-winning teen novel tells of a divided society with two groups. The Crosses are the lucky ones: born into privilege and wealth. They run the country and have the best funded schools. But the Crosses couldn’t function without the other half – the noughts. The noughts are the bottom half of society. Their purpose is to work for Crosses and to keep the country ticking over. They are suppressed at every opportunity. This is segregation taken to the extreme: and it doesn’t work along the lines you might think it does. At the start of the story 13-year-old Sephy (a Cross) is secretly continuing a childhood friendship with Callum (a nought). This is a friendship that seems to be on a path to self-destruction as their feelings for each other grow. Fuelled by the growing uprising among noughts and the Liberation Militia the two teenagers are destined to be pulled apart. This is a novel that will challenge the way you view the world.

When cats
fight! I
n general, cats prefer to avoid unfamiliar cats. However, if a large number of cats are living in the same neighbourhood, there will be times when their paths cross and a fight can occur.
How can I prevent my cat from fighting?
• Neuter your cat – neutered males have a smaller territory and are less likely to fight • Keep your cat indoors during high risk times (most cat fights seem to occur at dusk and overnight) • Do not leave food out that may encourage other cats into your cat’s territory • Use a microchip-activated cat flap so that your cat can escape into your house without being followed by another cat • Provide a hiding place (such as a large planter) beside your door so that your cat can take cover when he or she first leaves the house
What if I find my cat fighting?
• Create a disturbance to break up the fight – make a noise, throw a blanket over one cat or splash them with water – but don’t put your hands into the fight! • Open the door so that your cat can escape into your house • Check your cat carefully for any signs of injury and visit your vet for a thorough examination if you have any concerns. Wounds may need to be flushed, and antiinflammatories and/or antibiotics may be required • Continue to check your cat daily for the next few days in case an abscess develops Acorn House Veterinary Hospital provides veterinary care 24/7 so help is always at hand if your cat does become injured. Our vets and nurses are also able to help with more detailed management advice for persistent fighters, particularly if your own cats are fighting each other within your home. Repeated conflict can be very stressful for cats resulting in behaviour changes and other stress-related illness in addition to bites and scratches.

Your Tarotscopes for May 2017... by Susan Peppiatt
Taurus
A bit of a rush is in order this month just to keep up the status quo. The past few months may have seemed intense and busy but May shows as in a league of its own. Money is good. Time shows as sparse. Don’t delay things, just get them done to survive intact.
Gemini
Lazy days and pleasant company figure this month for many Gemini Born people. The brighter weather swells hearts and allows old problems in relationships to be faded out. Allow it to happen , there are no winners otherwise
Cancer
Time to come out of your hermit shell and embrace a relationship which has always been warm and comforting and allow it to develop further . This could be your year; as long as you don’t but those barriers up again.
Virgo
Being a peacemaker hangs heavily on Virgins as they are expected to hide truthful responses and just nod and smile. This would always be too much to expect from a truthful star sign. But count to ten before exposing all or regrets will follow.
Libra
Family are shown as a little needier as usual. The advice is to be prepared to give more time this month, but allow yourself to look forward to more personal space next month
Capricorn
Don’t take a fight on for others too early. The cards say they should be given a chance to sort things themselves before you try to take over and solve things for them.
Aquarius
Holidays and music are highlighted for Aquarians this May. A need for peaceful relaxation rather than great effort is shown by the cards to prepare for the fairly erratic months ahead, these aren’t shown as bad, just very full on.
Pisces
Scorpio
Some difficult people show as coming around to your way of thinking, eventually but not without effort taken to fully explain the thinking behind your plans . Don’t just give in. Take time to talk things through, it’s shown as worthwhile.
Special People and places show as important this month for those born under this sign. Make the most of friends new and old and don’t turn down the chance to visit old haunts. Some magic is in the air this May.
Aries
Leo
Success is within your grasp .Leos love to be adored and actions that Cancer subjects make this month make that very possible. Pushing the limits energy wise opens up so many doors. Not a month to sit and wait. A month to get out and do what’s in your mind.
Expect family and friends to be full on and considering some kind of celebration for you this year. Lots of the planning starts this month it seems.
The Sanctuary, Harpur Street, Bedford www.spellboundsue.co.uk 70
Sagittarius
This looks like a month to start getting a grip on future plans in a more concrete way than has happened recently. Not a time to put away dreams, but time to make little steps towards the situation that you want to be in next year.

Fertilisation
Unfertilised
I
Fertilised
t is now widely appreciated that trees require certain essential nutrients to function and grow. A nutrient is an element that is involved in the metabolism of a tree, or necessary for a tree to complete its life cycle. For trees growing on a forest site, these nutrients are normally present in sufficient quantities in the soil. Landscape trees or urban trees, however, may be growing in soils that do not contain sufficient available nutrients for satisfactory growth and development.
Tree fertilisation can increase growth, reduce susceptibility to certain diseases and insects, and under certain circumstances, help reverse declining health. Common objectives of fertilisation include: 1) Overcome a visible nutrient deficiency. 2) Eliminate a deficiency not obviously visible that was detected through soil or foliar analysis. 3) Increase tree growth, flowering, or fruiting. 4) Increase the vitality of the tree. 5) Reduce potential injury from disease or insect infestation.
Laboratory analyses of the soil nutrient concentration.
This will ensure that only the correct nutrients are applied to correct the deficiency. By adding only the nutrients required, excess nutrients will not be added to the environment. The process of conducting analyses, setting plant health goals, and selecting a fertiliser to achieve this goal is called Prescription Fertilisation.
Prescription fertilisation is a system unique to Bartlett Tree Experts 1. A range of soil samples are collected 2. The soil samples are analysed under laboratory conditions. 3. Once the soils analysis is complete the Laboratories develops a prescription based on the plant species, soil type, goals, and nutrient and pH levels.

BARTLETT TREE EXPERTS A Very Brown Hedge Indeed Aphids are one of the most common and troublesome of all garden insect pests. They attack a large number of garden plants throughout the country and are recently causing much disfigurement to ornamental conifer hedges. Commonly known as Greenfly and Blackfly, these aphids feed on hedges, sucking the sap of the plant and can spread several viruses, causing severe dieback. Cypress Aphid is currently troublesome and pre-dominantly affects conifer hedging. Damage inflicted on conifer hedges by the aphid Cinara cupressi is severe and can lead to large brown patches on the hedge. This leads to localised foliage death, reducing the aesthetic look of the hedge. As the aphid is active from May to October it is important to catch this problem early and apply treatments to stop its spread. At the first sign of brown patches call us for a free consultation and professional advice.

Glorious
greenhouses
I
f you want to sow seeds earlier, have better crops of tomatoes and cucumbers, and tender plants during the cooler months, it may be time to buy a greenhouse.
Don’t forget to allow for the costs of a greenhouse. Things such as electricity, water, staging, propagators, watering systems and automatic vent openers, plus blinds, heaters and insulation all need to be factored in. The greenhouse should be placed in full sun, because if it’s shady the plants tend to become leggy. Place it in the most open site you can, keeping it around 10m (30ft) from any big trees, if you can. This is because of the shade they may cast and also the falling leaves and twigs will block gutters and increase the frequency with which you have to clean the glass. A heated greenhouse will give you a much bigger range of plants to grow. Preferably, make the heating electric and thermostatically controlled heating so you can save money on it. Even being able to keep the frost out will tremendously widen the range of plants you can grow in there. 76
Fan heaters move the air around and will heat a larger area efficiently, while tubular heaters are suitable for smaller spaces. You can also buy heated propagators and soil-warming cables if you only want to heat the seeds you are sowing. Invest in a maximum/minimum thermometer and put it where it will be easily read, but out of direct sun, which will interfere with the reading. If you want to grow ornamentals in your greenhouse, work out what temperature you can keep the greenhouse at and grow plants that suit that environment, rather than trying to match the heat to the needs of a variety of plants. To keep an unheated greenhouse looking good, try to grow a succession of flowers, which will mean encouraging some plants to bloom a bit earlier than normal. Investing in a greenhouse will allow you to experiment with seeds, grow more fruit and veg, take cuttings and widen the range of plants you grow.

Competition
CPRE Bedfordshire launches photo competition to mark its 30th anniversary: Bedfordshire – A Changing Landscape
This year local countryside charity, CPRE Bedfordshire, celebrates 30 years of standing up for Bedfordshire’s countryside and greenspaces.
The competition is open to CPRE members and non-members, so keep a camera to hand when you’re out and about.
To mark this, the charity is running a photography competition open to all, to build a picture of Bedfordshire’s much-valued countryside and greenspaces, and glimpse how these are changing.
First prize – £100, second prize – £50 M&S vouchers. The deadline for entries is 16th October 2017.
The theme is: Bedfordshire – A Changing Landscape Bedfordshire is a beautiful county, with landscapes and green spaces that are enormously valued by the people who live here, yet our landscapes change, both throughout the year and over time. Entrants are encouraged to consider the ways that Bedfordshire’s landscape, countryside and greenspaces can be seen to change, through natural or human factors. 80
A spokesperson for CPRE Bedfordshire said: “On our 30th anniversary, it felt fitting to focus on how Bedfordshire’s landscapes change over time – a chance to consider the past, present and future of our beautiful county. “We hope people are inspired by the theme and we look forward to receiving some great entries from across Bedfordshire.” For full details about how to enter our photo competition, please go to www.cprebeds.org.uk or contact info@cprebeds.org.uk

BEDFORD
BLUES
A
taste of the West Country will be coming to Goldington Road in May with the launch of the town’s very own Sausage and Cider Festival on Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th.
The event takes place at Goldington Road – the home of the Blues – and celebrates real cider made by artisan producers around the country and the art of sausage making, along with an array of live music acts and family activities to keep the party going. Speaking about the event, Gareth Alred, Operations Manager at Bedford Blues, said: “We are looking forward to hosting Bedford’s first Sausage and Cider Festival this May. We are a community club and hope the event will attract plenty of families, both within our demographic and new people to the ground. “Sausages and cider are to rugby what strawberries and cream are to tennis – or so we plan to make it. There are few things that go better together and we are delighted to launch the event which we hope will become an annual knees up for the town at the end of the rugby season.”
84
The festival will be organised by The Original Sausage and Cider Festival Co., run by veteran event planner Crispin Slee. It will be a home-coming for Mr Slee, who grew up in Bedford and played his first game of rugby as a mini for the Blues. He said: “I was actually coached by Blues President Gareth Davies at the Junior Blues over 40 years ago. He was fantastic and his warmth inspired me to spend a lifetime around rugby and I can’t wait to buy him a pint of cider to say thank you.” At least 30 real ciders will be available at the festival and the sausages will range from artisan hot dogs to Polish kielbasa, along with other street food. There will be live music throughout the event and a free family circus – for kids big and small! Adult tickets are discounted to £7 in advance and can be bought by visiting https://tinyurl.com/lxmdz23 To keep up to date with news about the festival, including the line-up of bands, please visit: http://www.facebook.com/ BedfordSausageAndCiderFestival

t was a case of too many dropped points for the Eagles as they finished the 2016-17 season in the top half but with distance from the playoff spots. Jon Taylor will look back with many positives from the season, which included a 16 game unbeaten run from mid-December to April. March started with a solid win at Uxbridge, but draws against Kidlington, Egham and Hanwell, albeit sandwiching a victory at Potters Bar left the Eagles just too much to do to make ground on the playoffs. The fine undefeated run came to an end on 8th April on a glorious afternoon in
