n the evening of February 24, 2018, Union College stepped back into an era long before its present students’ time to reminisce in the glamour and sparkle of 1920s America at the Rococo Theater in Downtown Lincoln.

The event began with a pasta, salad and bread buffet. Jovan Cross, a sophomore graphic design major, stated, “The pasta was amazing!”

Lauren Shields, junior international rescue and relief major, added, “I particularly enjoyed the mushroom pasta.”

After everyone was well-fed, ASB came on stage to introduce the event, or as better remembered, came on stage to have President Anthony Gann give the State of the Union Address. After insults towards some members of his “audience” (consisting of other ASB members) and some indications of who he appreciated most, chaos ensued as each member went backstage with the President leaving last.

In a matter of seconds, the President had been knocked back onto the stage. The question the rest of the night, as acted out in sketches throughout the talent show, was which

ASB member tried to “kill” the president? The live game of Clue left the audience on edge until the very end when a huge plot twist was revealed.

Max Bromme, playing the role of the investigator, actually ended up being the attempted murderer, all as recompense for being chosen last in kickball and having his lunch money stolen in elementary school. Racquel Amich, sophomore international rescue and relief major stated, “The plot twist at the end of the play was crazy!”

In addition to Clue, students enjoyed many other aspects of the event as well. Lauren Shields stated, “The venue is very cool. I’m glad they reused it.” Other students were astounded by the excellent performances put on by other students in the talent show.

Christianna Nesmith, a sophomore pre-nursing major, exclaimed, “I liked the original songs--Kailani on the ukulele and the combination medley [junior business administration and social work major, Angenita Pierre-Louis and senior nursing major, Matthew Zacharias].

While stealing the hearts of the audience, but not claiming the prize at the end of the night, the UC Boyz were remembered by many event-goers. Giovanni Agra, a junior nursing major, stated, “I loved the men’s ministry boy band.” Shields added, “I think the UC Boyz poured out their hearts with that performance and were not given a fair shot at the championship.”

was grateful for all my new experiences. I was even grateful for my employment at the cafe as opposed to other people taking work for granted. I feel like it shouldn't be that way, we should all be grateful for the things we have especially if it's something that provides resources.

I would like to encourage everyone to try and see the blessings out of the simple things we usually might take for granted in our lives because we might just find something special. I know I did because some of my greatest friendships came from my time spent working at the cafe.

wanted to talk about Union and how our school provided opportunities that I needed in my life.

As I was growing up I was always told of the importance of making good connections. So when I arrived at Union I was happy to see and experience the accepting and welcoming environment that the campus brings. As a freshman, I

As I grew in friendships and in my major I discovered much more new opportunistic doors that God was opening. However, there might be doors that close in our lives but I know that better ones always come with the help of God. I believe that we just have to be humble and not take the little things in life for granted so maybe we can experience the bigger opportunities. This is something I strive for in my life and see the importance of it in our Union community.

NEW RESTAURANT WITH A TWIST I

n January of this year, a new restaurant located at 803 Q St. in the Haymarket named Screamers opened up and it has quite an interesting concept.

Founded by University of Nebraska Lincoln graduates, owners Kevin Witcher and Jeff Schrader are paying tribute to their musical past.

Inspiration for the restaurant started back when Witcher was living in Washington D.C. “There was a similar themed restaurant in the D.C. area,” comments restaurant owner Witcher.

“But unlike typical dinner theaters with dinner and a show, Screamers is a cabaret style, which means the staff is the entertainment.” The servers perform songs on stage in addition to waiting tables and serving food.

Witcher’s and Shrader’s musical history started when they were both in a show choir nicknamed “The Screamers.”

Screamers has a wide variety of food ranging in price that’s perfect for everyone. The menu includes fine dining, with steak and seafood entrees if you’re feeling extra spendy, all the way to different burgers and sandwiches which start at $10.

“I like trying new places to eat so this is a great place to go to for great food and to be entertained at the same time.” comments freshman business major Hophni William.

The restaurant has also made the effort to include vegetarian and gluten free food dishes on their menu. “I’ve been a vegetarian for 16 years now and I like trying new foods,” comments junior finance management major

Jimmy Gilley. “I would definitely be interested in checking this place out; the vegetarian and gluten free options are also a great bonus.”

When asked why the Haymarket was the chosen spot to debut Screamers, Witcher had two words: talent and location. “The University of Nebraska and the surrounding area is a magnet for talent as well as the other businesses around so I thought this would be a great place to open up.” In the few weeks Screamers has been open, Witcher has seen a lot more customers than he would of thought and is excited for the future of his new restaurant. Stop by Screamers for a new place to experience dinner and a unique performance.

KIDNAPPINGS IN NIGERIA I

magine being at a boarding school, away from your family and home, and possibly out of the country, living through those awkward high school years we’ve

Your biggest worries probably include the test you have next week, the crush you have on that guy or girl sitting next to you or just the fact that you’re behind on your laundry.

Now imagine that a terrorist group has been kidnapping and killing students from your school and the surrounding area. It makes all the other worries seem miniscule.

This is what’s happening in Chibok, Nigeria. The most infamous event occurred in April 2014 when the terrorist group Boko Haram kidnapped 276 girls from a government secondary boarding school.

The news went international and the world showed its support with the rally cry “bring back our girls.”

Boko Haram is an Islamic terrorist group that fights against Western education and claims that the Nigerian government has been interfering with traditional Islamic education.

Since 2010, they’ve been attacking schools, killing hundreds of students and abducting children for various reasons, including to turn the children into soldiers for their cause.

According to some reports, over 20,000 people have been killed and almost 2 million have been driven from their homes.

The most recent large scale incident occurred Monday, February 19. The small town of Dapchi in northeastern Nigeria was attacked and scores of female students were abducted from the local school.

Reports are still coming in as there’s a lot of confusion. The estimated

number of abducted girls ranges from 50 to 105. Boko Haram is using these girls as leverage to get some of their commanders out of prison.

The Nigerian government claims it’s doing everything possible to recover the missing girls.

President Muhammadu Buhari has been tweeting his support for the victims of the most recent attack, although in Nigeria, tweeting isn’t the most effective way of reaching out to the citizens.

Around 57 girls from the initial kidnapping in 2014 have either been released, rescued or escaped.

Several have spoken in front of international humanitarian organizations such as Amnesty International to raise awareness about the horrors that the remaining students are experiencing.

There’s been concern about how the government is handling the situation since the Dapchi attack occurred without government resistance and the information about it came from a variety of outside sources, not the government itself. The sharing of information seems to be a recurring

issue in the attempt to respond effectively to the Boko Haram.

With attention focused on Nigeria once again, hopefully the government will be able to receive sufficient assistance from outside the country to muster a stronger stance against the Boko Haram.

UC GETS A SOCCER TEAM he last senate meeting of February was very productive for the group of senators involved. Dr. Allen asked the senators their opinions on the courses that the Religion department offers for general education requirements.

The department is exploring new ideas moving forward, and the senators gave great feedback for the upcoming years. Renae Cross started off with positive remarks on the courses she's taken. “The religion classes have challenged me to think deeper on the stuff I think I know.”

James Clague suggested a Christian debate course. “It would focus on exploring why you believe what you believe with your peers. It can also teach you how to defend your beliefs when you’re around people who find your belief wrong.”

Dr. Allen mentioned that a class of this nature falls under the idea of “apologetics”, and a class, Developing the Christian Mind, comes close to what was being suggested.

Lastly, next month both teams of executives of ASB will be attending the Adventist Intercollegiate Association meetings hosted by Southern Adventist University this year.

This will be a place where the ASB team members will be able to network with other colleges and find out how their position plays a role there.

It's also a place where they can communicate issues between the schools and find solutions that have worked elsewhere. You can find Anthony Gann or Angenita PierreLouis to voice your concerns about Union that you want addressed.

The senators approved the bill and it will continue its process towards the school’s administrators.

The process for a bill to pass through senate is to have the majority of the senators say ‘Yes’ to wanting the bill to move forward.

Once it’s passed through this group, the Executive Vice President, Jean Christian Toure, presents the bill to the President, Anthony Gann. He in turn presents the bill to the President’s Council and that group decides whether the bill is possible. They then pass it off to the department that it corresponds to, which for this certain bill would be given to Plant Services.

SUPER SPY ROSE VALLAND SAVES THE DAY MEMENTO ARTEM I

t was October 1940. World War II was well underway and Paris was under Nazi occupation.

Rose Valland was an assistant curator of Jeu de Paume Museum in Paris.

Nazis burst into the museum halls, took over the building and turned it into the headquarters for the ERR (Einsatzstab Reichsleiter Rosenberg), an organization specially created by Hitler to loot cultural objects.

“ The Nazis allowed Valland to remain at the museum.

Germans had because she secretly knew German. She compiled these findings in the form of detailed notes.

The Jeu de Paume Museum often was visited by a prominent Nazi officer, Reichsmarshal Hermann Goering who would often pick out pieces for Hitler’s planned Führermuseum in Linz, Austria.

Although, with each visit he would also grab pieces for his personal collection as well. These actions didn’t go undocumented.

Valland made sure of that through her ability to float around unnoticed and grab key intelligence.

Eventually, late August 1944 rolled around and France was liberated from German occupation.

Valland knew she had important information that would allow her to save a large amount of artworks.

However, she grew a distrust of

During this time of the museum’s occupation, Jacques Jaujard, the Director of the Musées Nationaux, instructed Valland to remain at the museum and to keep an eye on the Nazis and spy on their activities.

Enter the Monuments Men, a group of elite men and women dedicated to the protection of monuments, art and cultural relics. Captain James Rorimer spent months building a relationship and trust with Valland to release the precious information she held to him and his team.

In time, she agreed to hand over her notes to them. These notes and her cooperation allowed the Monuments Men to trace down places where the Nazis had hidden the artwork away.

One such place was Neuschwanstein Castle in the Bavarian Alps, holding more than twenty thousand works of art and cultural objects from French art collectors and dealers.

Eventually, tens of thousands of artworks were recovered due to Valland’s critical role and willingness to lay her life on the line for sake of art and culture. France awarded her the title of a Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters, and in 1948, the US Government awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

However, although she played such a critical role in a huge rescue of cultural treasures, she fell into anonymity. I used to immediately think of James Bond when I heard the word “spy.” But now I’ll think of Rose Valland whenever I hear that word.

The Nazis allowed Valland to remain at the museum. While she was there she made sure to keep her head down and not make herself really known.

Her bravery and dedication to the arts and culture is something that holds her in high esteem in my book.

So move over 007 - It’s Valland, Rose Valland that’s the star in my mind.

However, she was paying special attention to all of the artwork that went in and out of the museum.

Also, she made sure to listen in on any important information she could get from the conversations the

LINCOLN STAYCATION W

hen everyone travels off campus, staying in Lincoln over a break can seem rather dull.

Luckily there’s plenty of entertainment that can be found without leaving the state or even the city. Here’s some ideas to keep in mind the next time a vacation rolls around!

Geocaching can be a fun way to explore many of Lincoln’s unique parks. If you’ve never been geocaching before, getting started is very easy to do. Similar to scavenger hunts, people can use their phones to find hidden “treasure boxes” in their town.

Those that find the geocache can take a small trinket from the box and leave one for others to find.

Melia Nash, a junior nursing major, encourages others to give geocaching a try. “Get the app and make sure that the cache size is at least a medium where there’s things in it,” Nash advises. “And check the activity to see if someone's found it recently because it’s no fun to either not find the cache or find out it’s just a log book.”

Museum of Roller Skating may be perfect for you. This Lincoln museum has the largest historical roller skates collection in the world.

You’ll be able to learn about the history of roller skating and many influential skaters. Admission to the museum is free to all so, whether you’re an experienced roller skater or a beginner, you’ll end up learning something new and maybe get inspired to strap on some skates yourself.

If roller skating isn’t for you, there’s also the Sheldon Museum of Art to explore. The museum houses a large collection of American art pieces, which features early modernism, abstract expressionism and 19th century landscapes.

There are also many events that are put on by the museum and are open to the public, which can be found under the events tab of their website: sheldonartmuseum.org/events.

Like the National Museum of Roller Skating, the Sheldon Museum of Art also has free admission for the public, making it an educational and walletfriendly place to spend and afternoon.

Catching a movie can also be a relaxing way to pass the time. While there are many movie theaters to choose from in Lincoln, the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center, which is also known as the Ross Theatre, often gets overlooked.

The Ross Theatre shows several different films throughout the year ranging from foreign films, documentaries and experimental films. The theater gives many in the community the chance to see films that aren't commonly offered elsewhere.

Student tickets are available from $6.50 to $7.00 and adult tickets range from $7.50 to $9.50.

These are just a few of the activities you can do in Lincoln. You don’t have to travel far to have a have fun time during break. A staycation in Lincoln can be a great opportunity to get to know the town better and make some great memories.

A BREAK FOR RECONNECTION pring Break has arrived. Congrats to everyone who survived midterms!

Now students can turn their attention from studies to some much needed relaxation! I interviewed two students on their Spring Break plans and brought their stories to the Clocktower.

Jack Daniel, 28, will graduate in May 2019 with a degree in English literature, an emphasis in writing and speaking and a minor in youth ministry.

When asked why he decided to come to Union, Jack explained, “I never thought I'd be at Union but about 4 weeks before school started God opened up a lot of doors very fast and Kim (my wife) and I moved quickly from Arizona to Nebraska.” Kim Daniel, Jack’s wife, works in Student Services as Office Manager.

Jack and Kim will start spring break in San Diego, California (a dream trip for many spring breakers), and then will travel two hours with his parents to Yuma, Arizona, Jack’s hometown.

“We will drive to my hometown to visit family and meet my newest great nephew. Other than that, the thing I’m looking forward to most is the wonderful Mexican food! My goal is to eat at least a taco a day.”

According to Jack, the best place to get tacos in San Diego is called Mike’s on Ocean Beach. I, personally, am adding this to my list of places to go because I trust Jack’s taste in tacos!

Along with a taco a day, Jack expressed his excitement to see his two dogs. “Seeing my dogs is actually better than Mexican food!” One of Jack’s dogs is a Basset Hound/Lab mix named Pierce and the other is a German Shepherd named Kerra. Pierce “is the best dog. He loves food and me, in that order. He hates water and being in trouble.” Kerra “loves squeaky toys and her soft bed. She hates loud noises and sleeping outside.”

Maren Miller, 18, will graduate in 2021 with a degree in emerging media.

Her family travels to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, every Spring Break.

“We visit my mom’s family” (which for those of you who don’t know, Maren’s mom is Humanities Adjunct Professor Dr. Morstad). “We always go shopping to small boutique stores. Some of my favorites are Simply Perfect, Lot 2029, Sticks and Steel, Unglued and the Great Outdoors Store.”

item on the menu is Honey Almond Chicken and “it’s literally the best!”

The best thing about Sioux Falls to Maren is connecting with family members she doesn’t get to see that often such as aunts, uncles and cousins.

“I’m really excited to just be in Sioux Falls because the town is so pretty and everyone is so nice and I just feel so welcome every time I’m there.”

Maren is also looking forward to the road trip up with her mom. “We don’t get to spend much time together since I started college and moved into the dorm.” One thing that Maren and her mom do during the road trip is play the alphabet game.

The rules are that you find words that correspond with the sequence of the alphabet on billboards, and the first one to finish wins. “My mom and I also just talk and catch up while we make that transition from parent/child to more equals/friends since I’m growing up and more of an adult now.”

I hope that Jack’s SoCal adventure and Maren’s northern trip are wonderful and filled with memories! That’s what Spring Break’s all about, right?

NO LONGER A GUZZLER T

he US is undergoing a dramatic shift that didn’t even exist 10 years ago.

As of last year, the US was the world’s 3rd largest oil producer, right behind Saudi Arabia and Russia.

If it continues at its current pace, America will become the world’s largest oil producer, dwarfing most other oil-producing countries around the world.

That’s right, the country that used to be the world’s largest consumer of oil is now flipping the market on its head and sending oil to other nations.

While we still are importing a fair bit from others, that number has fallen from 60% of all our oil consumed to only 20%, and that too will continue to fall.

This has had numerous effects worldwide and here in the country, both politically and economically.

While the environmental effects of fracking (the process American producers have perfected to extract oil from shale, the cause of the boom) are questionable at best, the other benefits for Americans is undeniable.

In December 2015, Congress passed a law lifting a 40 year ban on oil exports, and in January 2016, the first shipments of crude oil landed in Europe, starting a tidal wave of oily gold that’s on track to make us a net exporter in the next couple of years.

For the US and its allies, the resurgence of the domestic oil sector has helped shift the “price making” control out of the hands of OPEC (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, which American companies are forbidden to join by the government) and into the hands of local producers. Since many OPEC countries derive the majority of their national income from the sale of oil, any decrease in the global price of petroleum or their market share essentially shrinks their budget, causing deficits and even politically lethal consequences, depending on the nation in question.

In an attempt to crush the myriad of privately owned drillers scattered across the US, OPEC as a whole pumped up production, driving down the price of oil in an attempt to bankrupt American drillers.

Instead of killing production, however,

domestic the low

prices forced companies to adapt, employing new technologies and inventing others in order to drive down their own drilling costs.

OPEC members, on the other hand, couldn’t keep up the squeeze forever, as each passing day meant losing more and more money. Finally, OPEC relented, and went the other direction, cutting production to push up prices. This meant, though, that every time an OPEC nation cut production to raise prices, US producers just expanded production, taking advantage of their ever increasing market share.

What does this mean for us here at Union? Not a whole lot at the moment, actually (unless you or someone else works in the oil industry or a new boom-town). Since much of America’s oil is going overseas to places like China, Europe and even previous oil-producing king Saudi Arabia, instead of being sold here in the US, prices aren’t being driven down as much as they could be.

On the other hand, if an event such as the 1970s embargo occurs again, America now has much more control over what happens, effectively mitigating the effects of an overseas catastrophe. ear broken me,

You weren’t created damaged, but perfect and whole.

You were created with purpose and intention.

Every breath you breathe and every time your heart beats is a reminder that God isn’t finished with you yet. Wherever you are in your life’s journey, God is using you. You may not be aware of the small things you do that impact others, but your life’s worth it. The things you’re feeling right now are only momentary.

“We’re pressed on every side by troubles, but we’re not crushed.

We’re perplexed, but not driven to despair. We’re hunted down, but never abandoned by God. We get knocked down, but we’re not destroyed. Through suffering, our bodies continue to share in the death of Jesus so that the life of Jesus may also be seen in our bodies.” We’re living testimonies of Him. Though

you may be afflicted with hardship, God’s always there. If you feel broken, just remember He never let you fall.

Dear lonely me, You’re not. When you were formed, He was there. With your first heartbeat, He was there. When you passed your class with room to spare, He was there. When you sat, aching and frustrated, He was there.

He knows the things that make your heart pound, and what forms tears in your eyes. He’s respectful and loving towards you and He never wants to leave your side.

When you sit in your room without a friend in the world, He’s there. He was the One lifting the weight of the world off your shoulders. He’s always there for you.

WELL THAT WAS ... DISAPPOINTING YOU HEARD IT HERE LAST he Olympics have just come to a close, which is probably a bit of a relief for Team USA.

the difference between getting a medal and finishing in these positions is often a fraction of a second or the slightest deduction by a judge.

We were only able to earn 23 medals this Olympics, good for fourth place among competing countries, which is our worst total since the 1998 Winter Games (which featured 68 events as opposed to this year’s 102).

Still, we didn’t get the job done.

It’s especially difficult to justify our incredibly unsatisfactory finish given the fact that the Olympic Athletes from Russia were only a shell of what the country usually brings to the games.

This is one of the most disappointing finishes by the United States in any Olympics ever.

In fact, the US Olympic Committee anticipated a minimum of 25 medals, while the actual expected target was 37 medals. What’s worse, the Associated Press predicted we would earn 40 medals.

To be fair, Americans weren’t getting blown out of the water in most events.

We had 35 fourth, fifth, and sixth place finishes. At the Olympic level,

So what happened? Why did we finish so badly at this Olympics? I think the best way to determine what we did poorly is to work backward and look at what we did well.

For starters, the U.S. women outperformed the men (12 medals to nine, with two in mixed events), which is surprising given the fact that the ladies were outnumbered 135-109. If the guys had performed at the same rate (and the mixed events remained unchanged) we would’ve finished with about 29 medals.

women’s hockey gold medal game, ending Canada’s streak of four golds in a row in that event.

Additionally, we performed quite well in the up-and-coming freestyle skiing and snowboarding events.

11 of our 23 medals came out of these events (and five of our nine golds). The young daredevil freestylers (and Shaun White) did an exceptional job, and provide a group of athletes to build on heading into the next Winter Olympics.

This leaves traditional men’s events as the probable place where we fell short. And since we took gold in curling, silver in luge and silver in short-track speed skating, it seems the blame has to shift to the traditional skiers. As it turns out, Team USA failed to medal in any men’s cross country or alpine disciplines this Olympics, our worst showing in 20 years.

Not only that, but in the alpine disciplines, we only came away with one top ten. However, it’s not hard to see that we’ve been spoiled with success in the Olympics, given the fact that a fourth seems so terrible.

Hopefully Team USA can take this experience and use it to make our next showings much stronger.
