I

f you made New Year’s resolutions, you are either doing well at keeping them or you gave up two weeks ago! My goal this year is to be able to use the jaws of life at my fire department without looking like an idiot trying to lift the heavy equipment! It can be refreshing to get a chance to start over, to wipe the slate clean from last year’s mistakes and get a fresh start, like a city under a blanket of freshly fallen snow. What do you want a clean start from? Procrastination, a student’s worst enemy? Fear of failure? Fear of not being accepted? Fear of not being good enough? Worry? Poor grades or friendships? Good news! You don’t have to wait until 2021 to be free from those things! You can start fresh right now, this very minute! How? Well, it’s simple. Jesus died so that you can have a fresh start the moment you accept it from Him. So, are you afraid of failure? Tell Him! “Dear Heavenly Father, I’m afraid of failure. Please take that fear away and forgive

me for not trusting in you and your strength, amen.” It’s that simple!! What if that fear comes back two seconds later? Repeat that prayer again! Same thing with worry or procrastination or a multitude of other things. Tell Jesus about it. If he doesn’t answer or you need more help, ask again! Once I really needed someone to listen to me talk through a problem late one night, so I called one of my good friends. The friend didn’t answer, so I called again and again until I finally got an answer. My friend answered me because I was persistent. Jesus wants us to be persistent with Him, too. In Luke 11 he tells a parable about a man who needed some bread to feed a guest. He went to one of his friends’ houses’ and knocked and knocked and knocked until the friend gave him the bread he needed. Then Jesus said: “So I say to you, ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened” (Luke 11:9-10 NKJV). Do you want that fresh start? Just keep asking Jesus for it, and He will give it to you. Jade Covel is a junior studying religion.

ADVICE

Hey Hannah, How do I keep my New Year’s resolutions? - Consistent Constance Create a game plan for the year. Where would you like to be in three months, six months and so on? Don’t put too much pressure on yourself to reach your goals. The greatest thing you can give yourself this year is consistency. Many people have New Year’s resolutions that aren’t realistic, and then feel a sense of shame and failure when their resolutions aren’t met. Be kind to yourself and set achievable goals. Make sure you don’t forget to celebrate everyday victories. If every single day you make healthy decisions for yourself, healthy habits will follow. No matter what, I know you can do it! Don’t give up on yourself! You are worth it. Hey Hannah, Should I join the gym or just do home workouts? - Workout Wendell

PC: unsplash.com | Clique Images

Do whatever makes YOU comfortable. Gym workouts aren’t for everyone and home exercise isn’t for everyone either. Go with whichever choice will keep you accountable. I personally have to go to a gym or I simply won’t work out. There are too many distractions at home for me. Don’t be afraid to try different types of workouts, either. You could do group classes for kickboxing, dancing, cross-fit, hot yoga or more. There are so many options! Exercising can be really fun if you find what works for you. Remember, “healthy” is an outfit that looks different on everyone. Don’t compare your journey with anyone else’s. If all your friends are going to the gym, that doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong by exercising at home, and vice versa. Do you boo. Hey Hannah, Why did we come back to school? - Tired Ted To get that bread.

DEMOCRATIC

democr atic Winter Summary H

ello Union College! I hope everyone reading this column had a restful and cheerful winter break. Regardless of how the break went, the beauty of the new year is a fresh start for everyone– even now. Unfortunately, New Year clean slates don’t seem to work in government. The year 2020 is already setting the political stage in politics, headlined by the 2020 election in November. Before we look ahead to what the year has in store for us, let’s take a look at two of the biggest events that took place during winter break in another installment of the Democratic Summary, Winter Edition (DSW). WW3. A mere two days into the new year, Trump ordered the assassination of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani who was the head of Iran’s Quds force. While Trump defended his decision by saying that the U.S. was acting on intelligence that indicated Soleimani was going to attack Americans, the shortsighted decision led to a ripple effect in an already tense Middle East. This resulted in deploying an additional 3,500 American troops and also introduced a new wave of sanctions on Iran. In the Middle East, the Iraqi Parliament voted to expel U.S. troops from Iraq. Iran announced that they would not hold themselves to the nuclear deal they had signed with the U.S. in 2015, and Iran attacked an American base in Iraq. Thankfully there weren’t any troops killed. We will have to wait and see if the tension continues to escalate in the region. The Start! On the first day of winter break, Democrats in the House of Representatives voted to impeach President Trump and made him the third president in U.S. history to be impeached by the House of Representatives (Note: He’s still our president until, or if, the Senate also votes to impeach him). However, because the Speaker of the House dragged

her shoes in giving the Senate the Articles of Impeachment, the trial only just began a few days ago (as of this writing), with the Senators taking an oath to impartially judge the facts of the case. An interesting wrinkle has also recently come up: though the White House previously blocked any staff from testifying, former White House national security adviser John Bolton recently said that he would be willing to testify if he was subpoenaed. If allowed to testify, Bolton’s (which in and of itself is uncertain at this time), testimony could either confirm that President Trump abused his executive powers and undercut those same allegations. While it is unlikely that even a former White House staffer’s testimony will sway the Republicanled Senate, depending on what Bolton has to say, it may be enough to change their minds.

Here we go again W

elcome back! I hope all of you had a blessed and relaxing Christmas break! Hopefully most people avoided any politically driven family drama throughout most family meals. Politically speaking, the start of this new year has already been quite eventful. The future of this year will already be filled with major highs and lows for our country. Just as Christmas began, the articles of impeachment passed by the House of Representatives making President Trump the third US president to be impeached. This all started when Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced the impeachment process was going to begin. It has been a complete circus since day one. Our country has never seen such an unfair process in the history of impeachment. When asking for witnesses, the House Republicans were completely shut down. Democrats claimed they would treat this as fairly as the hearings of Nixon and Clinton, but in both cases, the White House and the president were allowed to be involved and defend themselves. However, throughout the 78 days this circus has been going

PC: New York Post

PC: cnn

on, the president has only been allowed to participate in seven of them. Yet he is being accused of abusing his power. Even from the first impeachment investigation, these investigations are still personal vendetta’s taken out on the President by the left. This is a new low for lead Democrats and unfortunately one I don’t see ending soon. President Trump ordered an attack that killed Soleimani, one of the largest terrorist leaders. It caused tensions to rise in the Middle East. Over the last 40 years, we have seen Iran use many of its proxies to attack Americans and American interests in their part of the world. And we finally saw the president take action against the radical behavior of Iran. He made it clear that this behavior will not be ignored anymore. The president called for other world leaders to step up to the plate and join America in holding Iran responsible for the destruction they and their proxy groups have caused. That’s your update for the year 2020. Now it is time to see what the future might hold. May God bless you and God bless America. Jacob Sanchez is a freshman studying general studies.

WORLD NEWS

chinese crisis the global citizen

I

f you’ve kept up with China lately, you’ll see something a little more than your typical trade deal or Trump talk about how our relationship with them is. Instead, you’ll see information about the new Coronavirus that’s been spreading. So far there has been a reported 56 deaths. This is huge because not only do they have the country freaking out, but they also have the issue of it spreading. Besides those who have died, at least 1,975 more people have been infected. The scary part is not just the sheer number but also the fact that there may be more people who have not been officially reported as sick yet they still carry the virus and unknowingly inflict others with it.\ A nationwide ban on wildlife trade is in place and more than 56 million people in almost 20 cities are affected by travel restrictions, which have been introduced amid fears the transmission rate will balloon as hundreds of millions of Chinese travel for the Lunar New Year celebrations. Unfortunately, as of today, there has already been confirmed cases in Europe, North America and several Asian countries as well.

PC: vox.com

Starting January 26, there will be certain measures taken by the Chinese government to battle and contain the outbreak of the Coronavirus. For starters, travel in and out of the province of Hubei, where the virus is believed to have started, will be limited or even prevented. Wuhan, a city of about 11 million and the capital of the Hubei province, has been under virtual lockdown amid intensifying efforts to contain the outbreak. Thankfully, the pressure on supplies of medical goods such as protective suits, masks and glasses had largely eased, thanks in part to increased private donations. During this time of year, many people get sick and spread their sicknesses to others near them. According to the news, over half of Lincoln has gotten the flu. While you don’t need to be worried much about the Coronavirus, please take care of yourself against other illnesses and make sure that you’re not going to be falling under the flu epidemic here. mistakes TTMOAIUS

istakes.Everybody M makes them at some point. Some of them can

be harmless and others can be dangerous. I believe that mistakes are a part of the growing process for us as human beings. They come in an eclectic selection, ranging from simply forgetting a pencil to car accidents and everything in between. Personally, I pride myself on making more entertaining mistakes then the average human. This talent for finding odd things to mess up with has lead to several exciting scenarios in the past. All throughout my childhood there are fond memories of incidents involving small fires, electrical surges and ceiling fans sprinkled in with the holidays and elementary school. My most recent French exploit and the feelings that I am about to share does not represent the ACA program or Union College.

PC: unsplash.com | Joel + Jasmin

“Hiking is an affront to mankind. Whoever decided that hiking is fun should be banned from the rest of humanity.” This is the small thought I had while climbing the literal mountain that rests behind the French ACA campus. I had made a mistake earlier that day and I was paying for it with trials and tribulations on this dumb rock. My sisters had decided, since we have a mountain nearby, we should go to the top on this cloudy day. My mistake was agreeing to go hiking. I have nothing against people who like hiking. I’m sure that somebody out there thinks it is fun. However at an elevation of two-high above sea level, air begins getting thin and my will to survive wears even thinner. The most memorable parts of this whole fiasco were the kind French people who passed my poor heaving walking corpse. Learning a second language is good for communication. But there are some things that don’t need translation. Worried glances exchanged between hiking partners, the gasps of children and the knowing looks of the elderly made it abundantly clear that I was being watched. Thankfully, my French is good enough that I was able to understand the offers of aid and any possible medical intervention that may be required. In the end, we made it up the mountain and looked around at the scene below. In the end, there was growth. I learned different French phrases questioning sanity and was able to strengthen my lungs in a new exciting way. Mistakes were made, but that doesn’t mean that it was a bad thing. ENTERTAINMENT

new decade, new media

W

e are now in a new decade. With this new decade comes new movies, music, concerts, video games, great moments and disappointing ones. With this comes empty wallets, lost time and even the possibility of becoming social hermits as we watch a movie, listen to the newest album and play the latest Switch game simultaneously. We have so much to look forward to in this upcoming year. Mac Miller’s final album and Justin Bieber’s next album will be released. Cristopher Nolan’s new movie, Tenet, and the next superhero movies will also come out. In addition, we can look forward to new TV shows and games. This year is going to be an amazing one. I am so excited about these releases and I can’t wait to write about them. We may be surprised by how the releases turn out. A new album from your favorite musician or a movie that nobody has heard of could be the best of the year. This year is going to be full of surprises. Of course, no year is perfect. There will be movies, albums and more that disappoint. But I’m confident those failures won’t distract from all the good that will come. Why is entertainment so important? In the midst of classes, tests, job and internship

searches and overall stress, media is a welcome distraction. A good album or movie can take you away from a bad day for a few hours. This is why entertainment is so powerful. It can remove someone from their life and take them to a different place. A person can experience more. Books, video games, music, and Netflix are all outlets for stress. This year you will have many ways of finding your way out of whatever situation you are in. Forget your troubles and relax for a little bit. Enjoy the new decade.

get outta dodge

O

n Saturday, Jan. 18, ASB held its first major event of the school year: “Glow-inthe-Dark Dodgeball” in the Thunderdome! Here’s a fun fact about me: I’m secretly a pretty big fan of dodgeball. Well, I mean, not so much the getting hit piece. That part really hurts. But the thrill of dodging some confident sucker’s throw is absolutely exhilarating. So, needless to say, I was majorly looking forward to heading over to the Thunderdome that Saturday night. Glow-in-the-dark dodgeball is more or less exactly what it sounds like. After the lights were flicked off, the individual glow sticks and balls lit the way. Throwing the bright neon balls and keeping a close eye on other peoples’ bracelets was a fun twist on a classic sport. Even watching from the sidelines for a bit proved to be entertaining due to the bright colors. I definitely wasn’t the only one who enjoyed myself. In the words of local sports and general enthusiasm enthusiast Olivia Jacobs, “I’ve never actually had the chance to participate in glow-in-the-dark dodgeball, so it was a really unique experience, especially compared to just plain-old dodgeball. I thought it was even really fun to just watch

all the teams play, and I’d try to figure out who each person was while I did that.” So, do I feel this event delivered? Oh, absolutely it did! I had a magnificent time! The Thunderdome was a perfect venue for this event. The spacious amount of room made for a number of creative plays. The lines on the floor fulfilled a weird sense of middleschool nostalgia. Overall, the atmosphere was warm and inviting, as can be expected from any Union event. I’m super pumped to see what’s next on ASB’s calendar of events.
