ac Miller would have turned 28 this January. Unfortunately, he died on September 7, 2018 from an accidental drug overdose. He left an incredibly strong discography behind, along with his faithful fan base. Those who listened to him hurt when he passed away. Right before he died he released the album Swimming. The album portrays his pain before he died. When an artist passes away, the record label usually releases an unfinished album to simply get money from the artist’s legacy to make up for a supposed loss of profit potential from the artist. A posthumous album is usually just a way to make money. However, Miller’s posthumous album, Circles, was released for fans and family. Mac actually recorded Circles with Swimming. Circles is the sister album that was meant to be released anyway, but Mac didn’t live to see it. Almost two years after Mac recorded Circles, and after his death, his family released a letter that detailed Mac’s plans for the album. Continued on page 2.

ou may think you know all there is to know about your iPhone, but Apple has planted some secret features for you to discover. Here are some cool iPhone hacks that may come as a surprise. Erase text with a shake Next time you type out a long message only to then want to delete every word, there’s an easier method than backspacing the whole thing. You can just give your phone a shake, to which an “undo text” box will pop up. Simply shake again to retrieve the text. Backspace on the calculator Enter the wrong number on the calculator? Swipe left or right over the numbers to delete the last digit. Quickly free up space Most of us face a constant battle with phone storage. When you’re in a pinch and can’t delete any of your 7,000 pictures, power off your phone. When you turn it back on, you’ll have a little extra space. Charge your phone faster I know you’ve been in a situation where you’re running out the door only to realize your phone is almost dead. You have ten minutes to secure as much battery juice as possible. Next time, turn on airplane mode and your phone will charge faster. Make your phone read to you Ever get tired of reading what’s on your phone? With an easy setting change, iOS will read aloud the words on your screen. Go to settings, then accessibility,

then spoken content to activate “speak screen.” Now, whenever you want to be read to, swipe down from the top of the screen using two fingers. Set a timer for your music Whether you’re trying to study, workout, or fall asleep, music can help you focus on the task at hand. You can create a playlist that’s the perfect length, or you can set a timer for your music. To do this, first start your music, go to the timer app, select “when timer ends,” then scroll to the bottom to select “stop playing.” Hannah Drewieck is a sophomore studying business administration.

Kobe bean bryant s.s sports
O
n January 26, we lost an amazing person due to a horrible accident in Calabasas, California. Kobe Bryant and eight others, including his 13 year-old daughter Gianna, two of her teammates, their parents, an assistant coach and the pilot died when their helicopter crashed into the side of a hill. They were on their way to a basketball game in Thousand Oaks. It was a tragic loss for all of the families involved and for Kobe’s many adoring fans across the globe. His death has touched the hearts of many due to his amazing basketball career and the work he has done for the community. We should not focus too much on his death but rather celebrate his successes. Kobe’s career started when he was drafted by the Charlotte Hornets in 1996 as the 13th overall pick. Almost immediately, he was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers to replace Vlade Divac. Bryant initially struggled to get playing time but that changed as he showed how he could perform on the court. The Lakers progressed into the playoff semifinals, where they lost to the Utah Jazz in overtime. In his second season he got much more playing time and he began to show that he was a very talented guard. His averaging scoring doubled and he began playing small forward alongside guards he usually would back up. That season he was also voted by fans to be the youngest NBA All Star Game starter in NBA history. Sometime during the season he signed a six-year contract that kept him with the Lakers until the end of the 2003-04 season. Early in his career he was being compared to NBA superstars Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan. Kobe won 5 titles with the Los Angeles Lakers throughout his 20-season career. He was arguably one of the greatest players in

the history of the NBA and certainly of his generation. His five titles are tied for the most in Lakers franchise history. In his career he averaged 25 points, 5.2 rebounds, 4.7 assists and 1.4 steals per game. He was one of the most complete players in the NBA. He had an 81-point game in 2006 against Toronto, which is the second highest single-game scoring performance in NBA history. Bryant has won many MVP awards in his career. Kobe retired in 2016 from the NBA and his two jersey numbers, #8 and #24, were retired in December 2017 in a meaningful ceremony. He went on to found the Mamba Sports Academy, which his daughter Gianna Bryant, who was proving to be a promising basketball player, attended. Kobe was also the girls’ coach for Mamba Academy, meaning he was also Gianna’s coach. He invested a lot of his time into many community projects, which is why it is so devastating to see him go. His legacy will live forever on the court and in Los Angeles. Sierra Sanchez is a freshman studying biomedical science.

ASB Interview: New President, Madison Carveth
PC: Madison Carveth
W
e’ve only been back from Christmas Break for a few weeks, yet there have been many fascinating shake-ups to Union’s status quo! One of these developments has to do with our Associated Student Body, as we now have a new president presiding: Miss Madison Carveth! It’s always interesting to learn what’s floating around in the minds of our student leaders, so I reached out to ask for her thoughts. Drew Hickman: So what position did you serve on ASB before being promoted? Madison Carveth: Previously, I served as ASB’s secretary. DH: Now that you’re president, what sorts of duties come packaged along with that? MC: As president, I lead meetings, and I also have to ensure that each of our events is well-planned and executed smoothly. It’s my job to make sure everyone on my team has the tools they need in order to fulfill their respective duties. I meet with Kim Canine twice a week to discuss any questions my team or the student body may have. So as president, I act as a voice for the student body at Union College.
DH: How do you feel about being given this new role? MC: I’m so excited to see what I can achieve for Union College through this position! I know that I have a lot to learn about how to lead well in this role, but I have an outstanding team that’s more than well-equipped to help me navigate this new opportunity and succeed. DH: What are your goals for ASB this semester? MC: My primary goal for ASB this semester is to help my team put on events that create a strong sense of community. I want to make sure both visitors and current students feel welcome and are excited to participate. DH: Is there anything else you’d like to say about your position? MC: Thank you all for your support and the opportunity to lead. I’m looking forward to working with all of you this semester!

Knowing God’s Will for Your Life
PC: disclose.tv
H
ow can we know God’s plan for our lives? In college, we often feel pressure to know our callings immediately so we can pick the right degree to get the right job. What if the degree you get doesn’t matter? Think about Moses. He was adopted and educated by the royal family of Egypt, but being a prince wasn’t his calling. He spent 40 years as a shepherd in the wilderness, but that wasn’t his calling. God didn’t give Moses his true calling until he was about 80 years old, and then God made it very clear! How much clearer can it get than a burning bush and a voice from heaven! Aaron, Moses’s brother, was a slave for many years before God called him to be Moses’s voice and then finally High Priest. Joseph was a servant, and then a prisoner before he became second in command (Gen 41:40) to Pharaoh. Mary was simply a young lady until an angel came and told her she was going to be the mother of the Son of God. Jesus “grew in wisdom and stature and in favor with
God and man” (Luke 2:52 NIV) and went about learning His father Joseph’s trade of stone masonry until God told Him it was time to begin His ministry. God can use us at all times in our lives, but sometimes our job is to go about our day-to-day lives, doing the best we can until God reveals His plan to us. When Saul was anointed king of Israel, he didn’t rush out to make it happen. Rather, he waited for God to reveal His timing and make him king. And while Saul turned away from God later in life, he desired to follow God earlier in his life. God told David that he was to become king, but God didn’t tell him how. David lived his life day by day until God made it clear to him how and when he was to become king. If God has not made it clear to you what His plan is for your life, think logically and live your life day by day to the best of your ability and wait. God will show you in His own time. Hey Hannah, I’m thinking about taking a road trip for Spring Break. Any suggestions? Traveling Tamara You could either spend the whole week in one location or you could travel to multiple places. Chicago is a great city to spend a full week in because of all the different activities. There are museums, tourist attractions and even Broadway. Another place you could visit for a full week is Colorado. If you’re someone who loves the outdoors, then that state is definitely the place for you! St. Louis is another potential option as well. All these areas are within 10 hours of Lincoln, which is doable with the whole week off. If you don’t want to spend all your time in one place, you could start in Omaha and then go from there. Start planning now to make sure you’re completely ready for your week of fun! Hey Hannah, My skin is so dry this time of year and I can’t find a moisturizer that I like. What product would you recommend? Dry Danielle I personally use Neutrogena Hydro Boost moisturizer. Other good ones are Cetaphil, CereVe or Moisturel. One of the biggest protectants against dry skin is to make sure you’re not

taking showers that are too hot or too long. Overdoing it with face-washing is also a culprit. You want to find a balance that works for you. You should avoid products that contain glycolic acid because it can dry out your skin as well. Hey Hannah, Sticking to my diet has been really hard for me. How do I maintain my diet? Healthy Henry Remember that moderation is key. ALL foods can fit into a lifestyle. It’s okay to occasionally have things that aren’t good for us as long as it’s not all the time. Finding a balance that works for you will make dieting a lot easier and more realistic. You’re less likely to relapse into old habits if you learn to moderate what you eat. Something that helps me is to plan meals ahead of time. This can be helpful during stressful times because you’re more likely to eat the healthy option that is already made for you. Remember to speak kindly to yourself. Change doesn’t happen overnight, but each healthy decision you make for yourself today helps your future self be a happier and healthier person. Do it for your future self. Hannah Armstrong is a senior studying health and human performance.

eet Abigail Beaven, or Abby, a senior Biomed/Pre-Med major here at Union. She’s in the middle of a research project, basically living in the Krueger Center. Her research consists of trying to create an insecticide that is not harmful to humans or animals and is also inexpensive. She is passionate about science and loves what she does. On top of being incredibly smart, Abby is also very artistic. She draws dogs as commissions and she’s also getting a minor in Art. Abby has learned a lot since first coming here to Union. As a homeschooled military girl, she had quite the culture shock when coming to a school and having a stranger
as a roommate. For the longest time she stressed endlessly over grades, spending most of her time studying and staying in her room. She also had trouble at first living with someone else and talking with her roommate. As she learned through her time here, she wants other students (especially freshman) to know that killing yourself over grades is not worth it, and that communication goes a long way. She also noted that not everyone will have your back or your best interests at heart, so be careful. She recommends people go out and enjoy Lincoln with friends, since college, and therefore Lincoln, won’t be around forever.
