he Amazon Rainforest has been burning for a long time now. The National Institute for Space Research (INPE) satellite data showed an 84 percent increase compared to the same period in 2018. The space agency reports its satellite data has detected more than 80,000 fires since January 2019. While fires can be a normal occurrence during the dry season, the sheer amount of fires along with the growing deforestation has been causing major concern in the last year. Many prominent world leaders and celebrities have been trying to raise awareness. But before getting into political awareness and campaigning, it is important to know what causes these fires. There are several reasons. The dry season contributes to some of the long-burning fires, but recent expansions on Brazilian ranching and mining is the major cause of the recent deforestation. Both industries are major contributors to pollution and strip the Amazon’s natural ability to resist and recover from these fires. Whether it is the legal harvesting of natural resources or illegal activities such as logging without a permit or mining in Continued on page 2.

ARTS
The Broken Relationhip Art
T
here is a museum filled from wall to wall with mementos of couples who once were. This museum is called the Museum of Broken Relationships. Many exhibits have been showcased across the United States in various locations. The permanent homes for this intimate collection are in Los Angeles, Calif., and Zagreb, Croatia. There is a simple reason that this museum is the subject of my article. Art is the expression of one’s being, and a broken relationship is a state of being. More often than not, the phrase, “you need to move on,” is said to those who express the pain of losing a previous intimate relationship. I find moving on to be a flawed concept, as the best art and raw emotion comes from broken relationships. Even some of my best personal work came from my past relationships that ended.

Below, I’ve shared 100-word collections of moments that used to be a part of who I was: “Every time I see olives, I can’t help thinking of you, even though it’s been a few years since I last saw you. Years filled with heartbreak and healing wounds. Years that change a person into someone new. Oh, have you heard? I’m even happily married now. There are times late at night as I wander the aisles of grocery stores. Making sure I get everything on my list. I come across the olives and think of the long drives I used to make on the 99 in the California summers to see you. Funny, I don’t even like olives.” “How could I have known this would be the last time I would sit across from you? Sippin’ on cherry-lemon tea. Enjoying the warm sun. Or was I laughing at those corny jokes, drinking key-lime tea? Those always made me smile. Maybe I was drinking an Eve’s’ Downfall, getting into another debate over religion or philosophy. Did I steal your tea, the Shanghai Dragon I always tried and grimaced at? Along with a kiss saying I was sorry with my devilish grin? Or maybe I did know. Heck, at least the tea is a sweet memory.” Art is the perfect place to showcase emotion and turn it into something beautiful. I hope at least one person can escape theses tragedies through art.

ADVICE
Hey Hannah Hey Hannah, Is it worth it to stay in a relationship for the fun of it? If you and your significant other are on the same page, then yes. If your significant other has no idea you’re in it just for fun, then it’s not fair to them. Don’t waste their time if you aren’t seriously committed to them. I believe that there are different types of relationships and that not all people want the same thing. If you aren’t ready to be in a serious relationship, don’t get into a relationship with someone who is in it for the long haul. Find someone more your speed. Hey Hannah, I don’t know how to handle the cold weather--I’m from Florida. How do I stay warm outside without getting too hot indoors? Do people leave snow boots on all the time, or carry extra shoes? How expensive are quality winter clothes? Should I get a long coat? How do people keep from falling on the ice I’m hearing about? How do people not die while driving? This is freaking me out. My biggest piece of advice for your questions is to have layers. If you get too hot, you can take layers off, and if you’re too cold, you can put layers on. As for quality winter clothes, there are several different opinions on what “expensive” means. You’ll always have people out here wearing Patagonia and The North Face, but that doesn’t mean you have to wear those brands. Many people just buy items to layer from a cheaper store. How much you spend is entirely up to you. I personally believe that you get what you pay for. If you want a jacket that will keep you warm and last many years, I would spend a
little bit more money. Places like T.J Maxx and Ross sell The North Face and Columbia for a cheaper price. Additionally, if you go to an outlet mall they usually have bigger sales. When it comes to shoes, this is completely up to you. I bought a pair of Sperry duck boots and have never gone back. I’ve had them for over two years and they’ve gotten me through some tough winters. They’re more expensive than a regular boot, but they last a lot longer. Also, if something happens to the material, such as a hole or loose stitching, you can email Sperry and they will fix them up for free and send them back to you; but there are some circumstances that aren’t covered. I don’t know anyone who carries extra shoes with them, but if that’s what you’re comfortable doing, then go for it! For your question about slipping on ice, just try to be careful. Don’t worry about something that hasn’t happened yet. Lastly, if you’re worried about driving on ice or snow, just use common sense. Lincoln puts salt on the roads and uses other precautions to make it safer for cars, but as long as you drive with caution you’ll be fine.

HAVING FUN DURING PREVIEW DAYS
T
wo weekends ago, Union hosted a group of prospective students from Midland Adventist Academy for its first Preview Days. The students stayed on campus and learned about college indepth by eating in the cafeteria, attending actual classes and sitting in on chapels. Each high school senior’s schedule was tailored to their interests, and everyone had a wildly different selection of classes. After learning more about college life, they were taken downtown on Friday afternoon to explore and see some of the highlights that Lincoln has to offer. The students were given the choice between specialty Hurt’s Donuts or a scoop of one of Ivanna Cone’s unique flavors. They were even able to join in on an ASB event: an excursion to Hollywood Bowling! The attendees thoroughly enjoyed themselves. When speaking to prospective Union student Victoria Shelton, she chose to describe the classes she was given to attend: “I went to Intro to Counseling, which was cool, because I learned a lot of information that I didn’t even know I wanted to learn until I visited the class! Then I went to a biology course, and I got to see the cadavers and hold a human heart! After that, I attended a business class ... and that was amazing! I’m interested in business because I’m thinking about opening up a practice as a speech pathologist, so that was perfect!” Making sure this event was perfect for the students took a lot of behind-the-scenes work. That effort was quite apparent in the final program, which was sincerely appreciated by Kelsea Allen, the group’s sponsor. “I think the structure of setting the kids up with classes or people that are apart of the programs they’re interested in is really smart. A lot of them came back and said that it was cool and they learned a lot ... It was well organized, and I especially liked that the ambassadors
were involved and played basketball with the kids. They went the extra mile to ensure the students had everything they needed.” The next Preview Days is scheduled for Oct. 31 to Nov. 3. Hopefully, those that visit are able to have a similar experience that shows them what Union is like. Whether or not these students choose to attend Union College, what’s important is that they had a fair chance to see Union’s best qualities. Good curriculum? Check. Friendly professors? Check. An incredible student body with kindness to spare? Check.

DEMOCRATIC
PC: cnn.com
HIT THE ROAD PAUL “W
e’re here for a purpose — and it’s not this petty, childish b------t”. Representative Paul Mitchell was clearly fed up when he made this statement. The twoterm Republican announced his plans to retire months before. This decision was fueled by President Trump’s remarks on a group of ethnically diverse lawmakers known as “The Squad”, who he said should “go back” to their country of origin. Mitchell was one of the few Republican lawmakers to publicly condemn Trump for him, the comment hit home: one of his children was adopted from Russia. As a result on July 24, ten days after Trump’s statements, a clearly emotional Mitchell announced his resignation from the House of Representatives. Mitchell is part of the exodus of Republican lawmakers that have left Congress under the Trump administration. Since Trump’s inauguration in 2017, nearly 40% of the Republican lawmakers have either left Congress, were defeated or retired. Comparing to how many House Democrats left during Obama’s first term, Trump’s 41 House Republicans vastly outnumbers Obama’s 25. Those who have left range from former Speaker of the House Paul Ryan - who
declined to run in the 2018 midterm elections - to Justin Amash, who stated a “partisan death spiral” as his reason for dramatically switching his party affiliation from Republican to Independent earlier this summer. This mass retreat of Republicans from Congress shows just how much Trump has warped the current Grand Old Party. This change is evident in several areas of Washington from the constant revolving door that has become the White House to the vast turnover of lawmakers we are now seeing in Congress. Many Republicans simply aren’t willing or able to deal with the turbulent nature of the Trump administration. President Trump has shown several times throughout his presidency that he puts a premium on loyalty, and has retaliated against those he deems unloyal. Thus, several Republicans who have decided to separate themselves from Trump’s cohort of loyalists - Jeff Flake, Justin Amash, Will Hurd, and Mark Sanford, among others - have seen themselves out. As Trump’s rhetoric pushes his proponentcritics out of the sandbox, the GOP’s integrity is becoming progressively more suspect.

ring ring... hello T he ever-growing controversy over President Trump’s phone call with Ukraine’s president has started yet another conflict on Capitol Hill. Democrats are demanding to have a copy of a whistleblower complaint filed against Trump from the call, some liberal lawmakers are threatening to advance with subpoenas, while Republicans ask for time and restraint as they gather facts. Democrats allege that President Trump pressured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate dealings involving 2020 presidential candidate Joe Biden’s son, Hunter, and used those claims to resurrect calls for impeachment. President Trump has denied any and all wrongdoing, but Democrats have been moving with full force, calling for the whistleblower complaint to be released to lawmakers.
SOURCE SAYS WHISTLEBLOWER DIDN’T HAVE ‘FIRSTHAND KNOWLEDGE’ OF TRUMP CALL WITH UKRAINE PRESIDENT. “The Senate Republican ‘see no evil, hear no evil’ attitude is unacceptable and must change,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said on the Senate floor Monday. “This again is an issue of solemn obligation. There is no wiggle room here, none.” Schumer with all of his fine ideas earlier in the day wrote a letter to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell asking him to issue a subpoena and hold hearings over the complaint. “It is regrettable that House Intelligence Committee Chairman [Adam] Schiff and Sen. Schumer have chosen to politicize the issue,” McConnell said. Schumer, as usual, will make a mountain out of a molehill. This boils down to the Democrat’s failure of the first attempted impeachment with the Russian collusion. Now they have to find something else to cry for impeachment.
Sen. Chuck Grassley’s responded, “One thing we do know is that rampant speculation by politicians and the media is not helpful,” he said. “That’s how the false Russia collusion narrative took root.” He added, “Let’s not repeat the mistakes of the past. Going forward, it’s important to respect the law and the whistleblower’s confidentiality while we gather the facts of the case. And of course, transparency is always the best policy so long as we don’t endanger national security.” I couldn’t agree more with him. Rather than rushing to cries for impeachment and hateful criticism rather suggests another idea. Rather than... just complete the second part of the statement for clarity. Well, let’s see how this plays out. I predict this will be another long ride that will go on and on. And as always I ask that no matter which side you are on that we all pray for the leaders of our country so that we will once again be one nation under God. May God bless each of you.

SPORTS
AND NOW THIS S.S. SPORTS
T
his has been one very interesting week in the NFL. There has been a lot going on in the NFL, which is why I’ve devoted my first articles to it. In the future, I will write about other subjects as well. There was more Antonio Brown drama, and the Jets are in a lot of trouble. On Sept. 19, Nike dropped Brown as a sponsored athlete because of the sexual misconduct and rape allegations against him from two different women. On the very next day, he was released from the Patriots after only being with them for 11 days. Brown had sent texts to one of the two women who had said he abused her and that the women’s lawyer was characterized as “threatening” and “intimidating.” This violates the new NFL Personal Conduct Policy, which states that any violations of the policy will result in banishment from the NFL. A day after being released, Brown tweeted that he will not be playing in the NFL any longer: “Will not be playing in the @NFL anymore these owners can cancel deals do whatever they want at anytime we will see if the @NFLPA hold them accountable sad they can just void guarantees anytime going on 40m 2 months will see if they pay up !” he wrote. He will now need to

meet with NFL investigators so that they may make a ruling on whether or not Brown will be prosecuted for his conduct, and whether or not he will be getting paid the guaranteed money in his contracts with the Raiders and Patriots that those teams have since rescinded. When the New York Jets lost Sam Darnold to mononucleosis earlier this month, it was a big loss because he was going to miss a lot of games. But the Jets planned to use their backup quarterback, Trevor Siemian. On Monday night Siemian made his debut against the Browns, but midway through the second quarter he left with an ankle injury and will not return for the rest of the season. The Jets turned to third-string backup quarterback Luke Falk, but his abilities are far below those of Darnold or even Siemian. However, he is the Jets’ only solution for now, although Sam Darnold will likely see the field again this season. Tune in next week to see what happens to Antonio Brown, and to learn about what’s going on throughout the rest of the sports world! There’s always drama, but hopefully things clear up for everyone soon.

WAIT, AREN’T YOU A THEOLOGY STUDENT?
M
y taste in media is not exactly what you would expect from a theology student. I enjoy music rap, R&B and hip-hop, and although I enjoy movies that have a slight art house mood, I’m always down for a good superhero or scifi movie. So that begs the question: why do I, a Theology student, enjoy these things? Sci-fi movies do not usually incorporate the theory of evolution into their stories. Rap has the reputation for being misogynistic and violent, but the media I enjoy often has a negative reputation. For example, when I bring up Kanye West you may have a preconceived notion of what his music is like. While much of his music is misogynistic, he also has some amazing songs with good messages. While I was writing this article, I was listening to Kanye’s song “Ultralight Beam,” which is a gospel song. His next album is going to be gospel. I am not condoning media that promotes negative ideas. I focus on what a song or a movie has to say. If a song, TV show or movie is anti-religious, I will stop consuming it. Being raised in an Adventist home, I was somewhat sheltered. Eventually, I realized what I exposed myself to was my
own choice. I decided to not expose myself to poor messages. I made my own decision about my media and my entertainment. What is your criteria for what you watch and listen to? Why do you like what you like? Is there some media that you feel you shouldn’t expose yourself to? If you are more liberal with your criteria, that’s okay. If you put stricter limits on yourself, that’s okay too. Either way, I encourage you to think about why you consume the media you do.

RELIGION
SDA CHurches in lincoln
T
here are several Adventist churches in Lincoln, and each one has a distinct feel to it. College View Church (CVC) is the closest, and many Union students choose to attend there. However, for some, CVC isn’t quite the right fit. There are other options in Lincoln, all within a five to twelve minute drive from campus. Piedmont Park is the closest church and is about five minutes away. It is mid-sized with about 150-200 regular attendees. Despite its size, it still has a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. The young adult sabbath school provides breakfast and systematically reads through a book of the Bible and discusses it. Pastor Halfhill is a good speaker and preaches relevant and engaging sermons. There is an excellent potluck once a month. Capitol View is a small church about eight minutes from Union. A senior at Union described it as a very personable church with a great young adult sabbath school. She enjoys the building’s architecture and says they have potluck every week. Allon Chapel has a “live, energetic and intentional” service. This small church is often full. Brain Garcia, a frequent attendee, reports that it boasts “a multi-cultural family-oriented worship experience! In other words, it’s a whole vibe! Other than that, our pastor, Marcus Larivaux, always has a word to speak.” Garcia attends Allon Chapel because it reminds him of his home church and the people there care about each other even outside of the weekly services. The Hispanic church, which is about 10 minutes away, is very traditional for a Hispanic church according to Isaac Eli. He attends there “because it feels more like I’m in my home country. I would recommend the Hispanic church because we have good diversity of cultures - around 20 different counties represented - with different perspectives on religion and other things. Having different perspectives helps to approach a situation
from different points of view. Also, we have a great diversity of foods at potluck.” Another very traditional church is Northside. Hannah Olin attends there and says that “they sing hymns and stick to the more conservative modern songs.” They are “very warm and inviting,” she continues. “The congregation is smaller, so everyone knows everyone. They welcome you with a smile and send you home with a hug. You are instantly one of the family.” Olin enjoys Northside because it reminds her of her closely-knit church at home. “New Creation is a place where Christians, usually hurt by the church in the past, can come back to Jesus in a non-judgmental and healing atmosphere,” states Ramsey Mesnard, who has attended New Creation for a while. He says that many people who attend admit to struggling with something in their life that troubles them. “The community of New Creation actively goes out of its way to help members that struggle with things like addiction, trauma, and other worldly inflictions,” Mesnard explains. “This is done through a lot of prayer, physical work, letters and any other ways that people can help.” New Creation is a place where healing occurs and God is at the center of everything. Hopefully now you have a good idea about what some of the other Seventhday Adventist churches in Lincoln are like, and now you can pick one to visit.

New Band In Town
Y
ou may have seen students walking throughout campus sporting an all-black tee with “Zooeys” written in unique font across the front. Those shirts represent a band comprised of four members, two of whom are current Union students. Cody Hagen and Cole Yeager are both members of the Zooeys. Cody plays the electric guitar while Cole presides over the drums. The band formed when Cole Yeager was in search of a bass guitar, so Cody sent him a link to one on Craigslist. When Cole arrived at the house of the owner, only the wife was home. She invited him in while he waited a few minutes for the true owner. When the husband arrived, it turned out to be Zooey. Zooey was in search of musicians to start a band. After a few jam sessions with Cole, Cole headed back to California for the summer. While at home, Zooey sent Cole demos for the album. Cole wrote the drum section for the album and when he returned to Lincoln, they started recording. By January 2018, the entire album was completed. The band formed and they started practicing every week. Their first show was on April 2018, and since
then, they’ve been playing shows, releasing music, and preparing to drop the album. When asked about his favorite part of the band, Cole Yeager commented, “Bands form and break up all the time, and to find a group of guys like the Zooeys is a really special thing. I’m happy that I get to be myself on stage with them while playing really good music.” The name Zooeys comes from the lead singer’s middle name, as he prefers to keep his identity under wraps. The band now has four singles out, with “Nothing but the View” being their latest release. You can find their music on Spotify, Apple Music and Google Play. They have several shows in the area, with the next being on October 4 at Lulu’s followed by a show on October 11 at Barley Street Tavern. You can learn more about their band at https://thezooeys.com/, and if you’re looking to don a fashionable tee for only $20, reach out to Cole Yeager or Cody Hagen.
