esterday, on October 8th, at the core of holy-chicken, known as Chick-fil-A at South point plaza, there was an assault. A disgruntled customer was throwing a temper tantrum, tossing tables and chairs. When asked to leave the man proceeded to exit the store, get into his vehicle and reverse his 2018 Dodge truck into the entrance of the restaurant. The door apparently wasn’t good enough... He then proceeded to exit the vehicle and jump the counter to punch the lemonade machine, yes, punch the lemonade machine. Once this act of violence was done he began to chase the fellow customers that had fled the store to the parking lot. A Burlington Northern Special Agent confronted the man asking him to calm down, the man did not follow the request and began to draw a weapon at the agent. The special agent then drew his weapon on the man and fired two shots at him, dropping him down as dead. Lincoln Police Chief, Jeff Bliemeister, stated that they are still unaware of what caused the man to act out in such violence, but they are currently investigating the man’s home and online activity in hopes to find a clue as to what could have caused this true travesty to the holy grill of Chick-fil-A. onjour! Hello! Learning a new language is an amazing experience. Vocabulary is an integral part of every culture, and the French are no different. However, there is a special set of vocabulary for Adventist Colleges Abroad (ACA) international travelers. All of it is relatable for ACA international travelers, some bringing forward fond memories and others eliciting groans of shared misery. Buckle up and get ready to learn some of this vocab France-style! Attiserage dan France- Landing in france. Congratulations! You have successfully landed in your country of choice, hopefully without too much hassle. Grab your bags and try not to look confused as you find your ride to your ACA school. Depending on when you arrive you may travel to your school alone or with other students to the school of choice. Sécurité Aéroportuaire- Airport security! It would appear that you are needed by the men in blue. Or black. Or in full military gear. In France, airport attacks are highly discouraged and steps have been taken to ensure they don’t happen. Unfortunately, this process leads to random security checks which I have had the pleasure of experiencing multiple times. Décalage horaire- Two distasteful french words that every international traveler is familiar with in their native language. In English, this translates to jet lag. One of the many prices of travel, albeit a less noticeable cost than the gaping hole in one’s bank account. Common side effects are a general sense of miserable with a side of fatigue. On a truly unlucky note -- school begins the day after you arrive, unless you come early, so good luck! Test de placement- The placement test. This happens on the second day of your arrival and tests you over a language you

have not yet learned. While muddling through jet lag and a seven-hour time difference, it will determine what you will be studying for the rest of the trimester. Goodluck! Class A2- This is the class for those who want only the formality of being in class. They already know how to live and travel comfortably within the country. While they do get to learn, it’s advanced enough that it flies by in no time. Class A1.2- This is the class for people who took French in high school. Technically they know the language, but any native speaker will smile as they blunder over the words. Often grammar is nonexistent and wordplay is off the table. They know enough to survive. Maybe. Class A1- Thank you for coming! No, duolingo doesn’t count, but it was a noble attempt. The people in this class came to learn and learn they will. Even without a basic comprehension of anything language, they came ready for an experience. Which they will get, no problem.

t’s been a very eventful week in sports. Here are updates on Huskers football, basketball, Major League Baseball playoffs and more. On Saturday, September 28, the Huskers football team experienced a major loss against Ohio State by the score of 48-7. This was a major loss for the Huskers given that the national spotlight is shining on its program, which is still trying to find its rhythm. Huskers Hoops recently started with a special guest performance from hip-hop star Rick Ross. They also had a 20 minute scrimmage game rather than playing an actual opponent. They were split up into two teams: the Red Team and the White Team, with Red Team taking the win. The Major League Baseball postseason began on October 1. The World Series will begin on October 22. The Cubs, who missed the playoffs this year, announced that they will be parting ways with manager Joe Maddon. He has been the Cubs’ manager for the past five years, and led the team to its first World Series victory in 108 years in

2016. He will be a free agent this offseason. The Yankees have experienced injuries all year and the team’s last game was no exception. Third baseman Gio Urshela left the game against the Rangers on Sunday, September 29, with a mild ankle sprain. However, he may still be able to join the team for its postseason series against the Twins. The Giants and the Redskins put in their rookie QBs to start in their game on Sunday, the 29th. The Giants took the win with a score of 24-3. Dwayne Haskins was inserted into the game, his first career NFL appearance, when Case Keenum was ineffective. However, Haskins ended up doing no better because he threw three interceptions. Daniel Jones was subbed in for Eli Manning the previous week and was much more successful. He continued his success against the Redskins. Sierra Sanchez is a freshman studying biomedical science.

irage3D is a Dutch animation and graphic arts studio that creates a variety of immersive experiences. In 1998, Mirage3D formed at the International Planetarium Society Conference in London. The company became known for its use of innovative technology that brought incredible storytelling to a large audience. The company specializes in giant screen, immersive and fulldome content. They have worked on designs for shows at planetariums as well as virtual reality. Some of the projects that Mirage3D has created include “Mars: One Thousand One,” “Origins of Life” and “Natural Selection.” One of their productions is currently being presented in Lincoln at Mueller Planetarium. Through December 1, there will be showings of their latest masterpiece, “Dinosaurs Dusk: The Origins of Flight.” The experience lasts 45 minutes. The film won the 2013 Jena Fulldome Festival Award for the Most Innovative Use of Fulldome Production. The

show aims to educate people on aspects of paleontology, geology and astronomy. John Zawiskie, Curator of Earth and Life Sciences Cranbrook Institute of Science, praised this production as, “Natural history at its best!” The story follows a father and daughter exploring the era of dinosaurs. The Tricassious, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods are all explored in this production, allowing people to feel immersed in an incredibly old, dinosaur-roamed Earth. Many people have a mental depiction of dinosaurs from movies like Jurassic Park or Jurassic World. This production allows the audience to not only enjoy, but also experience an academic piece about dinosaurs. The show concludes with the dinosaur’s last day on earth. “Dinosaurs Dusk” The Origins of Flight” is vividly alive for audiences of any age. Gianna Starr is a senior studying history.

RELIGION

Barn Lessons T his past summer, I had the privilege of taking an equestrian management workshop from Esther Lorenson in preparation for working at North Star Camp. Esther grew up with horses, and certifies many of North America’s summer camp horse staff. She is passionate about combining horsemanship and evangelism and her classes are spiritually focused. As I served as horsemanship director at North Star Camp, I used the concepts she taught me to draw lessons from the horses’ behaviors. At North Star, I had two horses who were polar opposites. They were always tied to the hitching rail next to each other. Bayle was a beautiful black mare who could not stand still. Every time she was tied up at the hitching rail, she would dance around anxiously and work herself into a dripping sweat. Billy, on the other hand, would always stand calmly and patiently. On trail rides, Billy would go anywhere he was asked to, including over logs, through water and up to terrifying plastic bags. Bayle didn’t even want to leave the barn. She would get anxious every time she was asked to leave. She would spin in circles

and rear and refuse to simply walk down the trail. If I asked her to do anything remotely scary, such as walk up to the most frightening object known to horses, she would panic. The difference between Billy and Bayle was that Billy trusted that his rider would protect him, whereas Bayle refused to trust anyone and took things into her own hooves, so to speak. It’s easy to see that Bayle caused more difficulty for herself because of her lack of trust. How often do we make our lives difficult like Bayle? We know what God wants us to do, but instead of trusting Him, we try to take things into our own hands. That works out for us about as well as it worked out for Bayle. This week, trust God and see where He leads. Don’t be afraid to leave the barn and go on an adventure with Him. Jade Covel is a junior studying religion. PC: Joseph Lee

A Delightful Harvey’s Harvest O

n September 27, multiple buses loaded up with students and headed out to the residence of Harvey and Nancy Meier for the annual “Harvey’s Harvest.” The evening hours were spent engaging in fellowship with one another: sitting on the grass chit-chatting, tossing foam sports-balls around, and partaking in the catered Chipotle. Despite the cloudy weather, everyone seemed to really enjoy themselves. The night concluded with a beautiful vespers service under the stars (and strings of lights), with a talk delivered by Dr. Toews. It was an inspirational end to a calm night. Hannah Dreweick heartily agreed, “It was great to worship God under the beauty of the stars.” I brought Hannah’s comment up in an interview with Olivia Jacobs. She elaborated on the idea by saying, “I thought it was a blessing. I’ve never heard Dr. Toews speak outside of the classroom, so it was great to see a different side to him. It was nice to hang out with my friends, play frisbee and toss the footballs around. The vespers was really relaxing. Being on campus is different because

we all disappear afterward to go about with our busy lives. But at Harvey’s Harvest, we were all in one spot, and we were able to hang out as a big group. The weather was great for a picnic-style event this year and the food was delicious. It’s always fun to hang out outside with a campfire going. It’s definitely one of my favorite vespers of the year.” It is incredibly generous of the Meiers to share their home with the community. The pleasant atmosphere was a perfect setting to create memories with close friends. The event doesn’t show any signs of stopping soon, and that is much appreciated by Union’s students.

ADVICE

5 Ways to Embr ace the Fall Vibes 1. “Fall” Themed Baked Goods Whether it’s pumpkin muffins, apple pie or snickerdoodle cookies, bake something that gets you in the spirit of fall. There are many recipes online or on Pinterest to test out on a chilly day. Invite your friends and make a whole day of it! Once you’re done baking, watch a movie and enjoy the final product! 2. Go on an Adventure During the fall, Nebraska has many options for those looking for an adventure. First, there are several different pumpkin patches and apple orchards to visit. Some pumpkin patch local favorites are Vala’s Pumpkin Patch in Gretna, Roca Berry Farm in Roca and Bellevue Berry & Pumpkin Ranch in Papillion. Apple Orchard favorites include Martin’s Hillside Orchard in Ceresco and Kimmel Orchard & Vineyard Educational Foundation in Nebraska City. If you want something more active, there are hiking trails around the Omaha area. Heron Haven Nature Center located in Omaha and Platte River State Park are a couple to check out. Lastly, keep your eyes out for various festivals and markets happening around Nebraska. 3. Find the Perfect Scent One of the best things about fall is being surrounded by scents such as cinnamon sugar, apples, eucalyptus and cedarwood. Nothing gets me in the festive mood more than lighting the perfect candle. If you live in the dorm and can’t light candles, you can use an essential oil diffuser, diffuser sticks or an electric wax warmer. These can all be bought online or in stores such as Target or Walmart. 4. Enjoy a Hot Drink Fall is the perfect time to drink your favorite flavored latte or decaffeinated drinks

such as hot chocolate chai tea. Let yourself indulge in the wonderful flavors of fall. There are many local coffee shops around Lincoln, such as The Mill, Crescent Moon Coffee, Rock-N-Joe, Cultiva Downtown or The Bay. Whether you want to discover new coffee shops or stay in with your choice of hot drink and cozy blanket, you won’t be disappointed! 5. Go on a Road Trip One of my favorite things to do during the fall is to visit new places. Choose a weekend that works best for you and get out of Lincoln! Load up your car with good friends, music and snacks to start your road trip off right. Chicago is about 8 hours away, Colorado is about 7 hours away and Missouri is about 6 hours away. School can be stressful, but don’t let that hinder you from making memories that will last a lifetime.

ENTERTAINMENT

Bad Week? You know those weeks where it feels like nothing goes right? The week of September 22nd was that week for entertainment. Below are just a few of the disappointments that happened. Mario Kart for mobile was released to the excitement of many people. Too many people. Mario Kart for mobile is a free game in which players can compete with each other on their mobile devices, and people naturally swarm to it. On the first day of release, so many people played that the servers crashed. Nintendo was exposed and unprepared. The final nail in the game’s coffin is that the optional paid subscription adds no value. The $4.99 monthly charge provides only badges and extra accessories. Kentucky Fried Chicken dropped its dating simulator, I Love You, Colonel Sanders! A Finger Lickin’ Good Dating Simulator. Yes, that is a real thing. You can actually date the Colonel in this game. This is KFC’s most creative strategy yet to sell more food, and it’s a horrible idea. I can’t wait for the Chickfil-a RPG and Popeye’s survival horror game!

Kayne West was supposed to drop his latest album, Jesus Is King, but the release was delayed beyond the initial Sept. 27 release date. He has never been good at releasing his albums on time. His album was what I was most looking forward to this week, and its delay was a big disappointment. Kim Kardashian, who first posted the track list and release date, announced that the album would be released as of Sept. 26. That never happened. DC Universe released a new episode of Titans, the show that continues to disappoint. The first season of Titans was really good, but this season is weak so far. The new episode continues to let fans down by mishandling characters. These are just a few of the standout recent events. Eventually, when Nintendo gets it together and when Kayne releases the album, we will be blessed.
