n the night of Oct. 5, ASB decided to test run a new event. Going by the name of Fugitive, the event allowed various faculty and ASB officers to hide across campus. After giving them time to hunt for cover, the students formed groups to search for those that hid. To spice things up, the lights were off in many of the buildings, making things far more difficult. The majority of the campus was available for searching (except for Larson, the dorms, and the AdventSource building), so there was a lot of ground to cover, especially with the hour-long time limit looming over their heads. Garret Dupper relayed his experience: “I think it was a lot of fun. It was interesting finding new places or rooms on campus I didn’t even know existed before. The best hiding spot I found was in Engel Hall. It was in the photo booth, in the closet in there. I would absolutely do it again if it were to continue!” Luke Santos followed up with his favorite hiding spot to discover: “There was a guy lodged under the staircase in Krueger. It took us forever to find him! It was a great experience, I would do it again.” Continued on page 2.

limate change, or better-stated as climate distribution, is alarming. The lack of action is only increasing the damage to the planet. An artist from Denmark recently decided to use his talents and be an influence for change. In September, “Breathe with Me” by Jeppe Hein was launched in the United Nations Headquarters in New York City and Central Park during the UN General Assembly. The launch coincided with the UN Youth Climate Summit. This art project’s purpose is to globally connect everyone with the intent of helping humanity as a whole understand what is occurring on this planet. The art installation not only challenges those who do not believe in climate change but pushes for other sustainable goals around the world. Some of those goals include good health and quality education for every country so they may have increased longevity and well-being. Another important goal is to reduce inequalities based upon ethnicity, gender, age and economic background. “Breathe with Me” allows not only interconnectedness but also encourages the audience to interact with the art, through

a display that shows how one breathes. The painting is of two blue lines on a white canvas. Everyone can see how no two lines are the same, which demonstrates that every breath and every life is different, but still occurs. You are encouraged to upload your rendition of “Breathe with Me”. Even if art is not your forte, you can spread awareness of the interconnectedness of our world. If every person contributed, it would be an exceptional opportunity to reach more people. “Life begins with an inhale and ends with an exhale. In-between we all breathe and live different lives. And yet, each breath keeps us together, connected, sharing the same air.” - Jeppe Hein Gianna Starr is a senior studying history.

syria’s problem

the global citizen

S

yria is home to one of the world’s most violent and cruel civil wars. Many citizens have been caught in the crossfire and fighters on both sides have lost their lives in what seems to be an endless mess of many countries getting involved for their own agendas. The United States is no stranger to this war and has opposed other major players such as Russia and Iran. Basically, the United States is supporting the rebels pushing for independence from the Syrian president while Russia and Iran are supporting President Assad and his regime. There are many horror stories from both sides. Human rights violations are also some of the issues the UN has been constantly advocating to address throughout the war. All in all, it’s a major mess. So on Oct. 7, 2019 when President Trump decided that he was going to make the executive decision to withdraw American troops from Syria, it caused a stir not only around the world but here at home. Many people in Congress and the House of Representatives believe that the president acted irrationally and impulsively without thinking of the possible repercussions. Most are saying that the president is betraying our allies, the

Kurds (a minority ethnic group threatened by the war in Syria), as they have fought by the Americans for years against terrorists in the region. Now there is fear that with the US pulling out, the forces allied with the Syrian government, particularly the Islamic State, will be able to regroup and gain control and power. Democrats and Republicans alike have condemned the president. Representative Joe Kennedy III (D) called the decision “not just morally bankrupt but a deep threat to national security.” On the other side of the aisle, Adam Kinzinger (R) says that “...terrorism is real. And the decision to end the war is not really ours to make when you have a whole group of folks that say ‘you know, look, we’re going to go and create a terrorist attack…’ They haven’t changed their mind on it.” Both are agreeing that the president not only abandoned the alliance between the US and the Kurds, who are on the frontlines of fighting against ISIS, but also risked the possibility of ISIS along with its allies to make progress in this war. Many agree, especially since the Kurds have been fighting by our side for so long and now they’re left vulnerable to another US ally, Turkey. Which, not surprisingly, happened only 3 days later on Oct. 10. Kurdish towns were bombed and their citizens do not know where to go. There isn’t much hope for the Kurds since their ally, who also became their protector, essentially left them out to dry. Their bravery put them on the front lines so that American lives were not alone or even around in some instances. These people are a struggling minority who simply want to fight to live in safety just as anyone else would. Their only glimpse of hope is that they can once again ally with the US for their mutual benefit in this war in Syria. Wesley Rodriguez-Diep is a senior studying international relations.

I

haven’t written about any of the movies that I like. So far I have covered music that has impacted me. Now it’s time to move onto films I enjoy. DreamWorks Animation released a movie that failed at the box office, but succeeded in Christian homes. The Prince of Egypt became the movie that many people loved to show on Sabbath. Kids learned the songs by heart and enjoyed every minute of it. The Prince of Egypt is the animated Bible story about Moses. We know this story. It is the one that we all know and grew up with. However, this rendition brings Moses to life in an amazing way. Everything from his mother hiding him in the Nile to his life as royalty and his exodus into the wilderness shows his character and the struggle he dealt with as God called him to lead the Israelites. It would be amiss if I didn’t mention this movie’s music. It is amazing and provides a way of making everything more epic and

amazing then it already is. The opening song describes the slaves’ lives and the melody begins to show the relationship between Moses and his brother Rameses. The music is incredible and memorable. Moses was called to achieve one of the most difficult tasks: bringing His people out of slavery. The Prince of Egypt depicts the Hebrews’ and Egyptians’ lives and shows what Moses went through in order to accomplish God’s mission. The most important aspect of this movie is the dynamic between Moses and his brother Rameses. They care about each other despite the trouble they get each other in and are able to laugh at their mistakes even as they compete against one another. You can truly understand how terrible Rameses feels when Moses leaves Egypt. After that, Rameses becomes Pharaoh and continues in the steps of his father as a dictator to the Hebrew people. When Moses returns to Egypt to free the slaves, you can feel the tension between them both. The Prince of Egypt is first and foremost a story about Moses and his brother. jokes on jokes A couple of weeks ago, a whistleblower complaint regarding President Trump started causing a row in Washington D.C. At the time, all that was reported was the president’s engagement in some unsavory behavior with another foreign national leader. We soon learned more the aforementioned leader was Ukraninan president Volodymyr Zelenskyy. A few weeks ago, the details came fully to light: Trump had asked Zelenskyy to investigate Joe Biden’s son, Hunter, and his business dealings in Ukraine. Trump is in no position to do this - a president cannot ask for a citizen to be criminally investigated - this can amount to harassment of a political opponent as well as a violation of Hunter Biden’s rights. Full disclosure - this impeachment inquiry is not a stagnant topic. We are getting new information surrounding this information every day, and there is a good chance that some of this new information will paint a different picture than the one we have right now. However, I think this is important enough that we need to discuss exactly what is happening as it unfolds before us. In response to the whistleblower complaint, House Democrats started impeachment inquiry giving out subpoenas PC: Adreanaproceedings, Ward like no one’s business. Even though several Republican lawmakers have criticized Trump

for his call to Ukraine, most of them have - as shown time and time again - defended Trump through the entire controversy, citing the farright “deep-state” theory, or ascertaining this as another political hack job. However, had the whistleblower not filed the complaint, Trump could’ve used his position to undercut one of his political opponents without leaving a trace. The 45th president would have warped foreign policy in order to fill his personal political agenda, and no one would have been the wiser. The way Trump portrays the story, asking for interference in our elections is legal and ethical. Last week on Twitter, he explained, “As the President of the United States, I have an absolute right, perhaps even a duty, to investigate, or have investigated, CORRUPTION, and that would include asking, or suggesting, other Countries to help us out!”. The way Trump distorts his actions into a crusade against corruption is a sardonic joke. The fact is, he abused his position for personal political gain and violated FEC (Federal Election Commission) law. Trump clearly believes that he is bulletproof after the Mueller investigation lost steam. This latest scandal will test the resilience of this administration. impeach...? A

s I mentioned in my previous article, I did not think this long ride of Democrat impeachment foolishness would go anywhere. After the president released a full, unredacted transcript of the phone call with the president of Ukraine, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced that the House of Representatives will launch a formal inquiry into the impeachment of President Trump. On Wednesday, Former Whitewater independent counsel Robert Ray told “America’s Newsroom” that a “singleparty impeachment inquiry” by Democrats against President Trump would not make it through the Senate. This is rightfully so. These unsupported reasons for impeachment by the Democrats are completely out of place and out of line. They are unfairly prosecuting the president and violating his right to due process. This should not be allowed to take place in our country. How can we be asked to trust a judicial system that will not even acknowledge the rights of the President of the United States of America? The Democratic call for impeachment without the

majority of the House makes it completely constitutionally invalid. This impeachment inquiry made by Senator Pelosi should and must be shut down. It is not okay to allow the government to disregard our rights as individuals just because it is in their favor. The White House outlined why it will not participate in their impeachment inquiry in a defiant eight-page letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and top Democrats on Tuesday. As usual, Nancy Pelosi is seen going back on her word. Pelosi had previously claimed she would not pursue impeachment unless there was bipartisan support to do it. I believe the only conclusion that can be drawn from this circus is that this is simply a way for the Democrats to unfairly put the 2020 election in their favor and impact the final results of the election. Especially in this time of great divide I ask once again that no matter which side you are on, pray for the leaders for our country. May God bless each one of you. ADVICE

HEY HANNAH Hey Hannah, Why are all these trees still green? It’s freaking fall already!! Unfortunately, I’m not an arboriculturist. It’ll do its thing when it’s ready. Hey Hannah, How can I go green in my dorm room?

Hey Hannah, Is it wrong to rely on your friends for money? Yes. It is very wrong to rely on your friends for money. You’re an adult. At this point, you should be relying on yourself for money. Treating your friends as your personal bank is NOT okay.

There are several ways to go green in a dorm. Firstly, if you’re leaving your room, make sure to turn off all the lights and unplug the appliances that aren’t in use. Another thing you can do is start using reusable bags. Depending on where you go, you can buy reusable bags that last for years, while still at an affordable price. However, one of the biggest things you can do to go green is to stop using and buying bottled water. TJ Maxx has an entire section dedicated to reusable water bottles, and there are many filtered water fountains on campus. Another solution I’d suggest is to take shorter showers. It’s estimated that the average person uses 2.5 gallons per minute during a typical shower. If you were to cut your shower time by four minutes per day, you would save 3,650 gallons every year. Is there a better place for coffee than The Mill? I’m starting to get tired of it. I like The Bay. They’ve got a chill atmosphere and great coffee. If I don’t go to The Bay, I like to go to either Crescent Moon or Bagels and Joe. Crescent Moon has more of a study vibe whereas Bagels and Joe is more for a coffee date unless you can tolerate a little bit of noise while you study. If you’re getting tired of The Mill, try somewhere different! There are many places in Lincoln and the list continues to grow.

This week in sports T his has been an eventful week in sports! There were unexpected wins, big news for Simone Biles and a great start for the Lakers. On Saturday, Simone Biles performed at the world championships in Germany, performing an amazing floor routine. She now has two more signature moves named for her after landing an amazing triple-double, composed of a double backflip with three twists. It was dubbed the “Biles II”. To be named after a move, the gymnast must submit the routine and have it reviewed by officials. Then they need to successfully land it at a popular competition. She also flawlessly performed a move on the balance beam which consisted of a doubletwisting double backflip. It will now be called “Biles”. Two other moves previously named after her consist of one on the vault and one on the floor, both of which are called “The Biles”. Lebron James and Anthony Davis made an outstanding opening performance together on Oct. 5. They scored a combined 37 points with 13 rebounds and 10 assists. The Lakers beat the Golden State Warriors with a score

of 123-101. It may only be the preseason but this is what the team has worked for during the off-season. The Lakers made a statement on Saturday. Anthony Davis and LeBron James are trying to say that they are this years power duo in the NBA. They are both amazing players and now that they are on the same team, they have something to prove. There are lots of exciting things going on!
