here are many opportunities to get spiritually involved on campus, although some are advertised more than others. The most well-known spiritual events on campus are church, vespers and V2 (otherwise known as Saturday night vespers). However, the most overlooked opportunity is also the most beneficial to spiritual growth—small groups. Small groups can take on many formats, but they typically involve a closer knit group of people studying the Bible. They allow for community building and provide a comfortable environment for sharing and conversation. There are eight small groups on campus, held at places like coffee shops, dorms and apartments, so there is a location where everyone can be comfortable. There is a group meeting every day, so there is likely one that fits into your schedule. The following is a list of the small groups currently hosted at Union: Continued on page 2.

givens is a rapper who could be considered an outcast. He was on a fairly well-known Christian rap label before becoming independent. He may be an outcast, but his last album, Domino, is amazing. It was crowdfunded although it doesn’t show it. Domino feels professional. Despite its low budget, the production sounds smooth and has a vibe of togetherness. Those who are familiar with Jgiven’s music know that his lyrics are deep and wordy. His word play and allegories are amazing on this album. He tells stories through his music, including

PC: genius.com

about his rocky relationship with God, the people in his life and his former record label. His stories have a happy vibe. However, his lyrics speak to deeper issues such as current affairs, race relations, politics and religion. The features on this album have the supporting role. They do not overtake the main focus of the album. The features work in a similar way to those on Ventura, one of the other albums I received. The features are mostly done by other rappers, however there is a standout RnB singer on the record. This collaboration is one that fans have waited for and love. The feature is Cousin Neighbor, which is the name of the combined forces of Jgivens and his cousin John Gives. These two voices and styles work perfectly together as John Gives supports his cousin by singing the bridge and Jgivens raps in his lyrical style. This beautiful and powerful combo provides something that you didn’t know you needed. Jgivens went from being on a Christian label to being independent and I would say it was to his benefit. This album’s quality was not affected by him being independent. He showed ingenuity and diversity of lyrics and production. This album is an amazing independent rap album about spirituality, family and social matters, all told in an amazing story. TJ Pittinger is a freshman studying theology.

ADVICE

hey hannah Hey Hannah, How can I be happy? HELP ME! -Unhappy Harley Don’t try so hard. Just be the best you can be and try to accept the things that aren’t perfect about yourself. This is something I don’t have a great answer for, and some days this question pops up in my head too. Just try to remember all the good things you have in life and focus on that. -Unhappy Harley Hey Hannah, What do I do about my crush on a senior girl who is already dating someone? -Infatuated Isaac Try to move on from it. You’ll end up wasting time and emotions on someone who’s already in a relationship. There are so many people who are available. Get to know new people and maybe you’ll find what you’re looking for. At the end of the day, if you and this unavailable girl are meant to be together in the future, it’ll happen.

Hey Hannah, What do you do if you know your friend is about to get their heart broken and they won’t listen to your advice? -Concerned Cara As much as you want to help and are coming from a good place, you have to let your friend make their own decisions. You don’t know the full story, and if your friend doesn’t want to listen to you, then they really aren’t obligated. Be there to support them no matter what happens. When you’re in a relationship, sometimes you can’t see what’s right in front of you because you’re completely involved in it. Let your friend see what you see in their own time or you might lose their friendship. People have to go through heartbreak sometimes to realize what unhealthy traits in a partner look like. As brutal as that is, most people only learn from personal experience. The thing you don’t want to do as a friend is to shame or judge them for staying. Show them love and support instead, because if they decide to get out of this relationship, they will need to know you’re a safe place for them.

Hey Hannah, How do I end a 20-year toxic friendship? -Distressed Diana Have a conversation with them and let them know how you’re feeling and why. Don’t avoid them or try to be nasty towards them. You’ll end up looking like the bad guy and you really don’t need to end the relationship with negative vibes on your end. The most important thing is to not spread rumors about them or talk about what happened between you two with other people. Put yourself in their shoes and act the way you would want them to act if the situation was reversed. Ultimately, you don’t need to be friends with someone if it’s toxic. It doesn’t matter if you’ve been friends with them for 20 years or two weeks. Life is too short to be around people who don’t give you what you need in a relationship.

another hidden gem I n downtown Lincoln, near Crescent Moon Coffee, there is another local gem that is more connected to Union than people may know. If anyone has taken an oil painting or watercolor class, you know exactly what I’m talking about. Julia Noyes, one of our own professors here at Union, owns an art gallery in the Haymarket. It’s titled Noyes Art Gallery and is located on 119 South 9th St. Lincoln, NE 68508. Every month a new exhibit is set up to showcase some local Lincoln artists. Starting on November 1st, three new artists will be showcased. Sharon Sykes’ fascination with her current art technique began around Christmas time last year. She made a gift for her mother out of an electric box that she turned into a nativity set. This started her on the path of making art pieces similar to the style of steampunk, which is using rustic metal and mixing it with modern parts like computer chips. Janna Harsch was inspired by something closer to home: her mother and grandmother. Harsch grew up watching her mother garden and tend to animals. This inspired her to

really pay attention to detail of color. Harsch was also inspired by her grandmother’s home way out in the countryside, where the only light was either daylight or moonlight. This gave her a keen eye to depict real colors. Ambur Harvey dove into a world of fantasy with surreal and mythological creatures. In high school, she decided to take a variety of classes about Roman and Greek mythology. This loosely inspired her to paint what she saw both in her mind and around her. Harvey gleamed other inspiration from books and the long conversations she had with her mom about myths. Gianna Starr is a senior studying history.

Halloween in europe T he lack of spookiness here is frightening. I have come to the conclusion that there is not Halloween in Europe because there are not any decorations at all. The scariest thing happening anywhere nearby is Brexit, which was scheduled to happen on Halloween but was canceled and extended until January. If you are not knowledgeable on the topic of Brexit, you are in luck. With a quick crash course presented by your host, me, you will know enough to speak with a little bit more knowledge on Brexit. The British Exit, or Brexit for short, references Great Britain’s attempts to leave the European Union (EU). By leaving the EU, Great Britain wants to regain sovereignty over itself, specifically its own policies on trade, national security and immigration protocol. Still being a part of the European Union does not allow Great Britain to make any major changes on its own, so they are only able to operate within the boundaries set up by the agreement signed by each country within the EU. Is there anything spooky about this? No, not really. The final vote for Brexit was supposed to take place on October 31. This will not be happening. The deadline set by the EU has been extended for another three months, leaving every country in Europe--

especially the UK-- exasperated from the lengthy process that was started two years ago. After several conversations with locals, I found the general consensus was an imperfect understanding of what Brexit is. What I could gather was similar to what I explained before. The main reasons people say the UK is trying to leave the European Union are the UK’s desire to manage its own trade, security and immigration outside of EU policies and processes. Unfortunately, this is the only information almost everybody I have asked has-- including Britain citizens. To some, Brexit is the enlightened dawn of a new age for Britain as the country leaves behind the shackles of the European Union in order to freely dictate their own destiny once again. For others, Brexit is the beginning of the collapse of Britain likening it to the British beginning of the Great Depression. For most of the rest of the world, and a distressing number of British citizens, the mood hovers between confused and wishing the whole mess would be over. It seems that my Halloween in Europe has been centered around Brexit. The spookiest time for England this year is simply a jumbled mess of confused British shouting! W

hile the latest focus on most world events tend to be centered around Hong Kong, the Middle East, or even the ongoing mess that is Brexit, it is important to realize that there are issues still going on in other countries as well. One particular instance would be the situation in Chile. Chile is a South American country that lines the western coast of the South American continent. The country, though small and narrow, has many natural resources, particularly copper, coal, and nitrate. These are what they export to the rest of the world and what provides 28.7% (2017) of the GDP of Chile. Statistics currently show that wealth inequality in Chile is one of the worst in the world, and it is the the worst country in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development group of nations. A reported 1% of the country’s population receives over 33% of the country’s wealth. This top one percent happens to be those in government and the related professions while the remainder of the country is usually struggling. The spark that started the nationwide protests was a 3% hike in subway fares. What started out as students going viral for jumping over the turnstiles turned into retaliation and outright protests because of the growing costs of living throughout the country. Chile is now in a state of emergency which is saying a lot because they are the only Latin American country that still has the same constitution they had under a dictatorship. More than a million people have taken to the streets, workplaces have ground to a halt, people have been detained and tortured, and there have been more than 20 reported deaths. The government has released the army back into the streets for the first time to try and keep order since the 2010 earthquake that shook the country. The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit next month was canceled by President Sebastian Pinera, who has his hands full trying to appease the protestors.

He’s already fired his whole cabinet in order to prove that there will be change, but there still are plenty of people marching, banging pots and pans, and setting fire to public property. In order to end the unrest, Chile will need some serious changes. Protesters are demanding a change in the constitution to reflect the change in government from a dictatorship to democracy.. The citizens don’t appreciate the powers the government exercises over the people. They’ll want more representation and accountability for the decisions made on their behalf. More urgently, the Chileans will want their standard of living to improve and see a close in the wealth gap. This will most likely look like higher taxes on the rich among other kinds of reforms that would hurt the 1%. People all around the world are hoping for change to improve their lives. You don’t always hear about it because of the way that we may be intertwined with those respective countries. But just because the US doesn’t have the same relationship with Chile that we do in Hong Kong, doesn’t make their struggles any less valid or real. These are still people looking for a better standard of living not just for them, but for future generations as well. Wesley Rodriguez-Diep is a senior studying international relations.

S.S. sports T

he World Series was played over the last two weeks between the Washington Nationals and the Houston Astros. The Nationals finally appeared in the World Series for the first time in franchise history after years of falling short in the playoffs. Before they were able to advance to the World Series, they defeated the St. Louis Cardinals four games to none in the National League Championship Series. The Astros had to play the Yankees (I’m still super bummed) to get into the Series, and defeated them four games to two. World Series Game 2 was a special one since gold medalist Simone Biles brought her gymnastics skills to the mound and threw the game’s first pitch. The Pittsburgh Steelers’ linebacker Anthony Chickillo was arrested following a domestic abuse claim from his Olympian girlfriend Alysha Newman. It was reported that in the early morning on Sunday, October 20 at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort, an argument between Chickillo and Newman started at the Lady Luck Casino then proceeded to continue in their hotel room.

PC: washingtontimes.com

PC: dodgerblue.com

Chickillo reported to police that their argument escalated when Newman punched him in the head and he pushed her to the ground. But Newman told police that Chickillo grabbed her by her biceps and forced her against a wall, causing her injuries. It was reported that Newman had visible markings on her biceps while Chickillo had none. He was charged with simple assault, harassment and criminal mischief and put on a $10,000 bail. Newman was cited for harassment. The Steelers’ general manager Kevin Colbert released a statement on Tuesday saying, “In regard to the recent incident involving Anthony Chickillo, we will continue to gather information, and we will fully cooperate with the NFL’s investigation. Any discipline involving the player will be determined after the gathering of further information from law enforcement and the League Office.” We soon get to see if the Nationals get their first World Series win in franchise history. And then we will also keep an eye out on what happens with Chickillo and his player status. Read next weeks’ edition for more updates and stories. one team to rule them all F rom October 24-26, Union hosted a bevy of high school students, coaches and parents during its annual volleyball and soccer tournaments. There were 14 participating volleyball teams and 11 soccer teams from academies spanning the country. Throughout Thursday, Friday and Saturday night, there were multiple bouts where the teams jostled for qualifying positions. The points were added to determine the standings for the final rounds. Forest Lake Academy and Collegedale Academy went head-tohead late Saturday night for the volleyball championship game, with Collegedale coming out on top. For the soccer championship, there was a fierce game between Collegedale and Sunnydale, after which Collegedale was once again declared the winner. It looks like it’s been an exciting year for them! There was a high amount of energy at the proceedings as eager fans rolled in to show support for their favorite teams. Cheers, hollers and noisemakers could be heard across the campus, from the Thunderdome to the College View Academy gym. The air

loomed with a buzz from the excitement. If you played in the Thunderdome you had an even greater chance to feel that vibe, because Buell Fogg was providing some very enthusiastic live commentary. Reaia Turner, a member of Midland Adventist Academy’s volleyball team, really appreciated the hospitality of Union and the whole weekend. “I love tournaments because they’re just such a fun experience. It was nice to be surrounded by so many people that I don’t get to see every day and make new friends, and I liked playing with my team. The feeling of getting ready to start a game is great, it feels like a mix between excitement and nervousness. I can’t get enough of that. It was also great to be able to go and cheer for my friends on the different soccer teams because I love supporting my friends.” It was incredible to feel the surge of positivity at each of the games I attended. All of the games never ceased to put a smile on my face. I already can’t wait for next year. Drew Hickman is a sophomore studying communication.
