The diary of a Roman emperor Why you should read Marcus Aurelius L ately, I have seen a resurgence in Stoic philosophy with books like “The Daily Stoic” and podcasts such as “Stoic Coffee Break.” The fact that it has made its way into mainstream culture makes sense when one examines its philosophical tenets. Its main idea is that individuals should learn to bear suffering without being ruled by their emotions. These ideals are starkly different to a lot of popular culture where emotions are the most important things, as for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction.Personally, I got curious about Stoicism after hearing about it, so I picked up “Meditations” by Marcus Aurelius. This is a really interesting read for several reasons. To start with, the author is an interesting subject. Marcus Aurelius was the Roman emperor from 161-180 AD. He ruled during the Pax Romana, or golden era, of the Roman Empire. Aurelius was not a stranger to suffering despite his high rank. His father died when he was just three, and he suffered from numerous healthAnotherissues.interesting aspect of the book is that it is a personal diary, which was not intended for publication. Because of this I think the work really allows the reader to engage genuinely with another mind. Reading the thoughts in this book is like having a really deep conversation with a close friend. The reader steps away from the book knowing Aurelius and themself better. One more short note that may persuade you to pick this up is how relevant you may find it. For example, I often think of a passage in book five when he talks about being reluctant to get up in the morning and 11 Nebraska ©Marcus Aurelius

Or have I been made for this, to lie in the bedclothes and keep myself warm? – But this is more pleasant.” The debate between two sides of himself continues as he retorts that pleasure is not all humans exist for and the other voice responds that rest is necessary. Aurelius rises telling himself that yes it is necessary but there are limits, and one should not go beyond what is sufficient. I have definitely had similar debates with myself some mornings. It really makes me chuckle to think that a Roman emperor and I have the same morning pep talks with ourselves.Thereare so many incredible passages and wise sayings in the book that I still think about. Marcus Aurelius’ writings helped me see ethics and principles that I have known but perhaps overlooked in a different light.

More sanctions are expected to come from the European Union to hit Russia. Some of these sanctions may come in the form of blocking access to key technologies, and access to global markets, freezing Russian assets in the European Union and stopping the access of Russian banks to the EU’s financial markets.North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg condemned Russia’s “reckless” attacks on Ukraine, saying it puts “countless civilian lives” at great risk. According to him, “This is a grave breach of international law, and a serious threat to Euro-Atlantic security. Once again, despite our repeated warnings and tireless efforts to engage in diplomacy, Russia has chosen the path of aggression against a sovereign and independent country.” NATO has agreed to bolster defensive land and air forces to Eastern The reaction of the world
France’s President Emmanuel Macron said, “These events of last night mark a turning point in the history of Europe.” He added, “We will respond to this act of war without weakness, with cold blood, determination and unity.”With a new war breaking out, the world will continue to watch their leaders’ responses closely. Russia finally moved in, now what?

The German Foreign Ministry said that it has been preparing for this and would work with the Group of Seven powers (G7), NATO and the EU on Thursday, Feb. 24, to coordinate sanctions and strengthen security measures.
As many know, Russia moved in and invaded Ukraine on Feb. 23. The 12 hours after the invasion was filled with many responses from global leaders. So now that Russia has invaded, what comes next? What are people saying about this?
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that “Russia has vilely attacked us” and the country is “defending itself and will not give up its freedom, as they think in Moscow. For Ukrainians, their independence and right to live on their own land freely is at the highest value.”President Biden said that, “the world will hold Russia accountable” for what he said was an “unprovoked and unjustified attack” on Ukraine. The European Union criticized Russia for bringing war back to Europe and promised to hit Moscow with tougher sanctions for its “barbaric attack” on Ukraine. European Commision President Ursula von der Leyen tweeted, “We will not let President Putin tear down Europe’s security architecture.” The European Union’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell, said, “These are among the darkest hours of Europe since the Second World War” and called on Putin to stop “this senseless aggression.”
Europe, with additional maritime assets. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said there was “no justification” for the military actions of Russia and that “this is a terrible day for Ukraine and a dark day for Europe.”

Curry scored an all-high of fifty points, two assists and five rebounds. This was the most points that he has ever scored in any game before. This was only two points behind the record that Lakers player Anthony Davis held for the All-Star Game. Curry also received the MVP for that game. This was due to the fact that James only had 24 points and eightTeamassists.James was behind in points at the beginning of the 4th quarter. James’ team was able to pull a couple tricks with Curry to get back into the game. They had constant 3-pointers and had their center Allen from Cleveland always around the hoop to secure the points each drive. This led to a consistent 3-4 point differential between the two teams. Unlike normal basketball, the All-Star Game ends when one team gets their score to 163. This goal was slowly achieved, but it was only done in NBA style. What I am referring to is the closeness of NBA games. The final score was 160-163, with favor going to Team Lebron. The final points were scored by the captain himself, Lebron James. Lebron and Durant play with their selected few in a game to remember We all have our favorite sports teams. We follow them through the season and track statistics and records as they make their journey to and from games. There are times when statistics, records and grudges get put aside and all that matters is fun. One of those times happens to be the NBA All-Star Game. This is when all the players you watched the entire season come together and are all under the same roof. This always brings the most anticipation for the audience to see what will unfold in the foreseeable future of the night.

This year’s captains of the All-Star Game are Lebron James and Kevin Durant. Lebron’s team mainly included veterans like Stephen Curry, DeMar DeRozan, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Nikola Jokić and injured James Harden. Though Durant wasn’t there to play because of injury, he still chose to go with a younger and less experienced team. His team included LaMelo Ball, Trae Young, Jayson Tatum, and Joel Embiid. This legendary appearance of NBA players kicked off with Andrew Wiggins winning the tip-off over veteran Jokić for Team Durant. The first quarter started off slow with just trading 3-pointers back and forth. Then, Lebron started getting nice and traded some of his starters off and put in some of his reserves. This made it interesting because some of the players had very good chemistry because they play for the same team. This was only the case for Jarrett Allen and Darius Garland, both for the Cleveland Cavaliers. On the other hand, Wiggins and Curry both play for the Golden State Warriors, and that night they were playing against each other.

I think we all have somewhat perfected the use of our eyes and eyebrows to communicate emotions and expressions because, well, it was the only thing people could see. Now, we no longer have to overcompensate. Just something to keep in mind as you navigate through using your whole face again! Check your teeth and grab some gum

Facial expressions
The mask mandate is officially lifted, which means that we all have to relearn how to navigate a world of full faces again. I don’t know about most of you, but it feels as if I have to learn my facial expressions and social cues again. It has been a long time since we’ve had to use them. As we continue to get used to our new old normal, here are a few things to remember as we enter the brave new world of no masks!
That piece of broccoli in your teeth won’t be able to hide anymore! Neither will your bad breath. So, after your delicious meal in the cafe, check a mirror and grab a piece of gum on your way out. Be considerate
Navigating the maskless world
Recognizing people Be aware of the fact that you might not be able to recognize people as well. In these last few days, seeing people’s whole faces has thrown me for a loop! We have only seen one another with half a face for almost two years. In other words, double check before calling out to someone and be patient with others.
Helpful reminders as you relearn how to use your face
Don’t forget that everyone can see your facial expressions now. I know, it has been nice to be able to express our true feelings without consequences. Nevertheless, you can’t hide that smirk or laugh behind your mask anymore! Also, be cautious when sharing secrets out in public. Lip reading is now a thing again. Consider yourself warned! Overuse of eyebrows
Two years ago, we all had to adjust to a world of half-faces and strange handshakes. As we continue to hopefully and prayerfully move back to normal, remember to be compassionate and kind towards others. We are all relearning and it is going to take some time. It’s probably going to be awkward around here for a while! But that is okay. Just keep on and keep smiling, because everyone will actually be able to see it now! Local Lincoln business loses control of social media account A ccording to Nebraska’s Small Business Economic Profile, there are 167,678 small businesses in Nebraska. Lincoln has the most small local businesses. One of these was recently a victim of hacking.

Reed had spent eight years building her brand and platform. But on Feb. 20, her business account was hacked. The first attack changed her profile picture to an ISIS member holding their flag. Throughout the next few days, the hackers posted more hurtful things including racial and homophobic slurs and more ISIS-related posts.

Reed’s main marketing efforts are done through her platform on Facebook. Often, she makes posts about which of her products are on sale. As of Feb. 22, her business account had over 20,000 followers. But marketing on Facebook can have its downsides, even though it’s the most popular social media platform. On a daily basis, 160,000 Facebook accounts are hacked and Reed’s business account was one of them.
Hayley Reed is the founder of H. FLYNN Designs. It is based here in Lincoln at Southpointe Pavilions. Reed makes clothing designs focused on the local aspects of Nebraska and Lincoln, and her work supports many local schools and fundraisers.
Around 9:00 p.m. on Feb. 22, Reed regained access to her account. She started healing the connections damaged by the hateful posts. In her first real Facebook post, she expressed gratitude toward everyone who helped her through the hack and the effect it had on her business: “If you’ve followed my Instagram stories about my hacking journey the last few days- THANK YOU!!”
While all this happened, Reed was working hard to get access to her account. She attempted to get in contact with companies that specialize in getting accounts back. She also tried contacting every support team that Facebook has. No one was able to help. Reed still kept in touch with her fanbase and patrons, who supported her and her company. They helped find a way to get the account back to Reed. With her large number of followers spamming Facebook’s support teams with requests for help, Facebook finally looked into her case.

How far would you travel for a burger?
Overall, my homegrown, corn-fed, Nebraskan opinion is that if you haven’t been yet, you should certainly visit an In-N-Out when you get the chance. Caleb Schaber is a freshman communication major from Lincoln, Neb. ©nypost
A Nebraskan’s first time at In-N-Out
W hen people talk about Midwesternexclusive restaurants, there aren’t many that people outside of the area would know about. When you travel far enough west or east, people out there don’t talk much about how they wish a Culver’s or a Runza would open up near them. The same cannot be said for the famous In-N-Out Burger.People who ate there a lot as children reminisce about how heavenly the food is, people who ate there once or twice while on vacation out west talk about it with pride, and people who have never tried it tell about how much they wish the franchise would make it out this far east so that they could someday partake in that delectable cuisine. As a homegrown Nebraskan native, I found myself in the last category for years. My friends who had been to California or Nevada talked about how amazing the food was, and I always wished I could someday partake in that divinely-blessed food. Last summer, I found myself working at a summer camp in Colorado. While there, I heard tales that some of my co-workers had visited an In-N-Out in Denver. Could it be true? Was I really in the same state as one of those legendary burger joints? Was this my chance to finally eat the sacred animal-style fries I had heard so many stories about? As fate would have it, it was.
During the last week of camp, a close friend of mine and I had the day off together. We decided that with our time, we were going to make the hour-and-a-half long drive to an In-N-Out in Denver. After signing the leave form and turning on some good summer jams, we departed on our journey. Upon arriving, the mythical status that In-N-Out has was shown on full display with a line so long that it had made the majority of its parking lot unusable. We spent what felt like years waiting to order, and after speaking the sacred words that would grant us the burgers and fries of the animal, we spent even longer waiting for our food. Once we had finally gotten it, we sat down and feasted. You may be wondering, what was your first impression of the glorious food at In-NOut, Caleb? I am aware that I risk the wrath of the entire state of California by saying this, but it was very underwhelming. The food was slightly better than what I would call average. Given that, I would have to say the experience of traveling there and the shirt I got from the restaurant were well worth the time spent.

hen thinking of reasons to avoid working out, a lot of excuses can come to mind. Participating in physical activity can be uncomfortable, exhausting, time-consuming and occasionally embarrassing so it’s understandable why it’s difficult to start working out in a public space. Considering that nearly every single fitness establishment in the continental U.S. has a large, embossed quote on their wall reading “the hardest part of working out is walking through the front doors,” indicates that a majority of people simply struggle to motivate themselves to show up to the gym. For the inexperienced crowd, “gymtimidation” can be a common culprit in killing the drive to become more active. This term can encompass the feeling of intimidation, anxiety or awkwardness when working out in a gym. There’s nothing wrong with feeling insecure or self-conscious, but letting those feelings get in the way of self-improvement and growth is an issue. Luckily, these emotions do not need to limit anyone. There are plenty of different routes to tackle and overcome these barriers. Build familiarity. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, a common root for anxiety is the fear of the unknown. Eradicating uncertainty could be one of the keys to boosting confidence in attending the gym. This could include researching different facilities in your region to exercise at, touring with someone to become more familiar with the layout, planning your workout before getting to the building or talking to someone who could help you achieve your goals. Find a workout partner. Working in tandem with alleviating the uncertainty previously mentioned, inviting a friend or family member could provide a source of support, inspiration and guidance. Strength can be found in numbers, so if the idea of working out alone seems absolutely

ghastly, it could be beneficial to have some sort of companionship when going to the gym. Start small. Your first visit to the gym doesn’t have to be a two-hour muscle-killer with a grueling cardio session as a conclusion. Managing expectations and being mindful of what your limitations are will go a long way in preventing discouragement and frustration. No one expects a beginner to be running ten miles or squatting 300lbs. At one point, every single person in the gym was inexperienced and unsure of their own abilities. So don’t be embarrassed if you only feel comfortable with spending 20 minutes in the gym or if your workouts are not as rigorous as those around you. Small steps can lead to big successes.

Raising your dead social media to life one post at a time 7 ideas to post on social media
W e all need a little inspiration when it comes to our social media. I like to use mine to see what my friends are up to. Of course, many of my friends post so rarely that I would not know they were alive if I didn’t see them in class every day.
countless stories that I could share. I know my friends in IRR also have many stories. Maybe share what happened in class or your plan for your final project. If you’re a nursing major, gross your friends out with unnecessary details. Work Similar to your classes, there is content with where you work. You can share (with permission) stories from your co-workers or a schedule explaining what you do in a shift. You can encourage commenters by asking for suggestions or ideas with problems. Outfits This goes for all genders. Outfits may just stay in your stories, but there is new content every day. This may be motivation for you to put effort into your outfits, or you may see this and laugh it off. Maybe you only feature one part of your outfit, like your shoes or your sweater – whatever works for you. Now go off and post more!
Sharing where you like to go may seem boring, but I love seeing photos of the clocktower. Some ideas from here in Lincoln: The Mill, Holmes Lake, Barnes & Noble, Target, Sunken Gardens and Haymarket District. Classes
There are always good photo opportunities for any hobby. If you like folding origami, showcase your work. Do you play games? You should post your setup. A great example is one of my friends who posted a photo of himself playing the piano. People see the photo, and they might learn something new about you. Stories If something funny or inspirational happens to you, tell your friends. Rather than post a generic selfie with a cheesy, overused caption, talk about your classes or what you did today. When I run into a long caption, I stop to read it. People care and want to hear.
Here are some ideas to post that are not food, selfies, other people or landscapes. Those are fun and easy, but variety is the spice of life. Here are seven ideas for inspiration: Quotes and Bible verses There are a wide variety of options here. A quote that inspired you, one for the holiday or a verse that helped you through a hard time are a few of many possibilities. They don’t have to be your actual post; they make great captions as well. Canva is a great resource for making text posts, providing for any aesthetic you want. Hobbies Let your friends know what you’re into.

Meta is also in significant trouble with the government over many allegations that they have violated law and/or caused hurt to children through their platforms. Also, they are now unable to track user data on many devices after Apple and more recently Google have begun to allow users to opt out of these services, cutting significant income for the company.Onecan never tell exactly what will happen, and it’s possible that Meta will be able to weather the storm. But right now it doesn’t look like there are many likes in its favor. What’s in a name?
10 and has started to be a significant part of our culture. This is significant given the serious backlash it faced over privacy concerns and the Chinese-American trade war. Why is it so successful? It’s super popular with young people, who now view Facebook as a network for an older generation. It should definitely be considered a force to be reckoned with considering the failure of Lasso, Facebook’s attempt at cloning the network.
Meta loses $500B since name change; more troubles I s the metaverse really the future? That could be a tough question to answer. PC Gamer’s most recent report shows that Meta has lost $500 billion dollars in value since it changed its name from Facebook last year. The company has also suffered a 30% stock market value drop and lost their position on the top 10 richest companies of the world list. Is the tech giant even relevant anymore? Facebook got its start because of the simple way it provided for over a billion people to stay in touch with friends and loved ones. The company continued its success by acquiring Instagram in 2012 and then the encrypted messaging service WhatsApp in 2014. Now it also owns Oculus and makes Portal devices as well. But it’s clear that the name isn’t all that changed with Meta. Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, seems to be steering the company in a new direction—the metaverse, a new field that some refer to as the ‘immersive internet.’ It’s rather novel and many aren’t exactly sure what it is—I actually had to add the word to my Mac’s dictionary to keep it from autocorrecting while I was writing! Another reason the company is struggling is the availability of other options. While Meta has dominated social media for a long time, it is now facing severe competition from TikTok. The app has made serious headway since becoming available in the US in 2018

I ’m sure that most of us have our opinions about Nebraska and sometimes compare it to our home states. Personally, in my state of North Carolina, I enjoy the warmer weather over what feels like the effects of Elsa after a breakup. Now it’s easy to look at the negatives, but let’s take a moment to see how Nebraska has its advantages over its Midwestern counterparts. Illinois Illinois is dubbed ‘The Land of Lincoln,’ yet if you want to go to Lincoln’s namesake city, you have to drive seven hours west to Nebraska!Iwould also bring up the fact that East St. Louis exists, but that one’s self explanatory…
All states have something that they’re known for producing. Nebraska has its corn, yet the thing that Michigan seems to be known for producing is cases of lead Nebraska versus the Midwest
Michigan
Let’s just say that East St. Louis is the New Jersey of Illinois.
Comparing Nebraska to its Midwestern cousins poisoning.I’msure we’ve all heard of the motor city of Detroit, yet it can’t even be called that anymore as all the motors in Detroit seem to have been stolen. Ohio If you ever find yourself in Ohio during a tornado warning, it’s best to take shelter in the Cleveland Browns’ Stadium, as there’s no chance of a touchdown. Unlike Nebraska, if you want to feel like you’re riding a carriage in the 1800s’ just drive on Ohio’s roads. There’s more potholes than actualAnotherroads.advantage that Nebraska has over Ohio is the fact that Nebraska doesn’t have the same abundance of serial killers that Ohio does. Notorious killers such as Jeffrey Dahmer are known to have attended school in Ohio. Unsettling, to say at the least. So while this absolute punishment of a cold front hits us like a supersonic train, let this article be a reminder to you that this state has many things going for it that can’t be said for its counterparts.

Now a lot of us like to complain about the winters in Nebraska, but we don’t have to suffer the way the Michiganians do. They have a little something called lake-effect snow. This is essentially water from the great lakes evaporating into the atmosphere and causing even more brutal snowstorms. Fortunately Nebraska doesn’t have many lakes to have that effect.
