A Message from the Club President Our Year in Review This past year, our club has continued its very active community service. Each month our members prepare and serve two dinners for several homeless families at the Tigard Good Neighbor Center. We have been doing this for nearly 25 years. For many years, members have supported the Kiwanis Doernbecher Children’s Cancer Program, (KDCCP), which funds research Fellowships dedicated to curing children’s cancer by training pediatric Oncology specialists and researchers. In July, our club hosted our annual Salmon BBQ, which raised over $4,000 for KDCCP. For over three years, our members have been serving the Packed With Pride Food Pantry on Monday and Thursday mornings each week, and twice a month on Wednesday afternoons. During that time, we have spent thousands of hours helping provide food for hundreds of families with children in the Tigard-Tualatin School District. Our club and its members continue our decades of support for the Mt. Hood Kiwanis Camp for developmentally disabled children and young adults. In addition to our financial support, in June we helped with a work party at the Camp; and in August, members of our club helped with the Walk, Roll & Stroll Fundraiser. In December, we resumed our annual Ringing of the Bells for the Salvation Army. We couldn’t do this during the pandemic, so it was nice to be able to finally do this activity once again. As the sponsor of the Sherwood H.S. Key Club, this year we decided to financially support the Key Club to enable several of them to attend the PNW District Key Club Convention in Seattle, in April. To help raise funds to support sending the Key Clubbers to the District Convention, in February, our club held a Movie Night at St. James Episcopal Church. raise funds to support sending the Key Clubbers to the District Convention, in February, our club held a Movie Night. It was a great evening for us, and for the Key Club. Several Key Clubbers helped with the popcorn, hors d’oeuvres, chocolate fountain and desserts. They were able to see how much our club was committed to enabling them to attend the Key Club District Convention. It was an event of which our members can be proud. With our club’s financial assistance, six Key Clubbers attended the District Convention. This was the first time that Sherwood H.S. Key Clubbers ever attended a District Key Club Convention. Attending the Convention had a very positive effect on the Key Club. Afterwards, the attendees made a very inspiring presentation to our club about their experiences at the Convention. As a result of those experiences, the Key Club decided to undertake forming a Builder’s Club at Sherwood Middle School. Our Kiwanis club is very excited to be supporting them in that endeavor. Many years ago, our club formed the Tigard Kiwanis Endowment Trust. Over the years, members have contributed funds to the Trust. Annually the funds in the Trust enable us to provide scholarships for graduating Key Club seniors. In June, we presented a $2,500 scholarship to an outstanding graduating Sherwood H.S. Key Clubber. This year, in honor of Lt. Governor Susie Meyer’s four years of outstanding service to our division, we are having a brick placed at the Legacy Patio at the District Office commemorating her service. This year, five new members have joined our club. My congratulations to our membership for all that you do!
We think about the future as we begin executing our plans for the 202324 Kiwanis year. It reminds me of the first day of school each year when I was a teacher. I would always be so excited planning for that new year, knowing that I would come in energized, with fresh ideas to inspire kids to do their best and most creative work. Kiwanians, you have that same opportunity now — to bring your ideas and energy as we kick off the new Kiwanis year. I am excited to embark on this journey alongside you. Our organization is made up of some of the most dedicated and selfless people I know. The challenges along the way should be embraced as opportunities. We will learn, grow, improve and adjust in ways that leave us stronger than before. Together our efforts will result in great accomplishments. As the old adage goes: Teamwork makes the dream work. Kiwanians’ teamwork makes dreams happen for thousands of children. So, get busy dream makers — let your light shine in your communities in children’s lives. and in children’s lives.

Dinner with Friends on Friday Night of DCON
District Convention Free Bikes 4 Kids on Saturday Afternoon of DCON
I thoroughly enjoyed this year’s District Convention. For me, District Convention provided so many “Ah! Hah!” moments, where I said to myself, “We can do that!” One of my most memorable sessions was conducted by Vikki Frucci, who was voted in as Governor-Elect. She had so many ideas for making meetings memorable. I want to start small, but I think we can implement some of her notions. We also met with a See’s Candies fundraising expert, and now we know how to do a successful fundraiser with them. I went to a session that featured speakers from the KDCCP, (our very own John Brookens); to the SIGN program, where I found out that it is ONLY $2000 to sponsor a doctor’s training for the program; to learning more about the S.O.S. (Save Our Spectacles) initiative. (Our new LTG, John Flaherty is the local expert for this project.) I also loved the Free Bikes 4 Kids service opportunity on Saturday afternoon. I am so grateful for being able to attend DCON. Thank you to Tigard Kiwanis for this experience!

By Sue Cummins We couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful morning than that of the day of the Mt. Hood Kiwanis Camp Walk, Roll and Stroll. There were eight of us there; and this year, we had a special job. Skye Burns, from MHKC, asked us to be course monitors. So, before the walk started. we were scattered around the grounds of the Oaks Amusement Park, there to direct the walkers onto the correct path. After the Walk, everyone gathered for a delicious lunch and other entertainment and activities, where George won a beautiful mirror in the raffle. This year’s event generated over $12,000 for the cause. MHKC reports that the funds are used to allay some of the costs of the campers’ registration fees.
August Social
On August 30th, we held a club social/meeting at the Oswego Grill. Members who went to the District Convention talked about their experiences, and we collected over $120 when the “Happy Thoughts” basket was passed, (to be used to help defray the costs of the Good Neighbor Center project).

The highlight of the September Social was a presentation given by Key Club International President, Kyle Hanson. Kyle talked about the challenges that have faced all levels of the Key Club organization since the pandemic. At the end of his presentation, LTG Susie Meyer read a proclamation from the PNW Kiwanis District honoring his hard work and dedication to service.
S S E E P T E M B B E E We had great attendance for this club event, with 27 people at the social. 16 were guests… some Key Clubbers, some Kiwanis from other clubs, and some family and friends. There was plenty of great food. Everyone had a good time, and the Key Clubbers even out the evening finished finished off by roasting marshmallows and making S’mores.

Club The Andersons - Our Newest Members
Meet the Andersons - By Jaclynn Anderson Hi Tigard Kiwanians! Let us introduce ourselves. We are Jaclynn and Chris Anderson and we moved to Tigard in June 2023 from Litchfield Park, AZ. We first met at a mutual friend's birthday party; and we celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary this July. You may have also met our three children Christian, Charlotte, and Dominic. Charlotte and Dominic were involved in Key Club and Builder's Club in their respective schools in Arizona. We are not brand new to the Kiwanis family. I joined Key Club as a freshman in high school in the 90s and served as my Key Club's co-bulletin editor (we were the first in our club to put together our bulletin on a computer instead of a typewriter!). I then served as a Distinguished Key Club LTG for the New Jersey District's Division 5; and then I was a Distinguished Governor of the NJ District of Key Club International. I was awarded a George F. Hixon Fellow Award. When I arrived on the campus of Arizona State University, I learned my local CKI division didn't have an LTG; and I served in that role until I was elected as the CKI Governor for the Southwest District, when I was a college freshman. Shortly after graduating from ASU, (Go Sun Devils!), we were invited to join the efforts to build a Kiwanis Young Professionals club. Unfortunately, soon after our charter, at a single meeting, two-thirds of the members announced they were moving out of state. The Board voted to disband. We were disappointed to lose our new club, but I was about to start graduate school and we decided we would join again once our life got more established. Unfortunately, it took us this long to find our way back. While we haven't been involved in service through Kiwanis over the past 20 years, we have put serving our community in a prominent role within our family, volunteering as a family for many organizations throughout the Phoenix-metro area, including Family Promise, the Agua Fria Food Bank, iHelp, St. Mary's Food Bank, Feed My Starving Children, and the New Life Center (Domestic Violence Center). We also hosted two exchange students - one from Sweden and another from South Korea. We are most excited about serving the youth in our community and addressing hunger and homelessness. It's especially important for us to serve in ways where our children and youth can serve with us. We would love to establish Key Clubs and Builders Clubs at other local area schools, as we have ;pve experienced, firsthand, future leaders. experienced and the impact seen these organizations firsthand can have theon building impact these Thanks for can welcoming to Tigard! organizations have onusbuilding future leaders. Thanks for welcoming us to Tigard!

Saturday, October 28th Sherwood Middle School 10:30 a.m. Every year, Key Club International encourages Key Clubbers to sponsor a Kiwanis Family activity on the Friday of International Key Club Week. This year, that Friday falls on November 10th. The Key Club officers are debating possibilities of what to do; but they know that they want to invite the Tigard Kiwanis and the Sherwood Middle School Builders Clubbers, (and maybe their families), to participate in whatever is planned. So please, keep the date open! There is no school in Sherwood on that day… so the possibility exists for both a daytime service activity or an evening social event.

Thank you to the members who have stepped up to serve as the club Board this coming year. We appreciate YOU! "It is not the strongest or the most intelligent who will survive but those who can best manage change." -Charles Darwin The Tigard Kiwanis Board struggles at EVERY officers’ meeting to figure out ways to help us all better adapt to new modules for how we can best serve our world and maintain a growing and active membership to not only survive, but to thrive! Some of the challenges facing the 2023-24 Board include: ✓ Figuring out how to offer the best opportunities for meeting attendance to our diversified group. How do we encourage working members to become leaders in the club, when our policy has been to hold both club and Board meetings in the middle of the workday? But, you can’t just say… “Well let’s hold the meetings at another time.” There are many long-term leaders in the club who face obstacles to changing the club and Board meetings to evenings or weekends. ✓ Figuring out how to offer the most opportunities for service to our diversified group, so that EVERYONE has a chance to regularly participate in service projects. (Last year we averaged about 65-70% of the members participating in service every month.) It would be nice to provide a greater range of service opportunities varying things like the time of day, the physicality of the project, and more! It’s not an easy task and may need a designated coordinator who could analyze specific participation roadblocks that certain members face. ✓ Figuring out how to bring in extra funds, so we can operate a more extensive service program; and so that we can expand our Student Leadership Programs. With the additions of the Key Club District Convention and the Builders Club at Sherwood Middle School, this is a MUST. But, we
have some members who object to doing fundraising events. So, how do we balance our need for funds with the reality of some member reluctance to participate in traditional types of group fundraisers? Also, a fair portion of our current fundraising happens when members attend meetings, (with the raffle and “Happy Thoughts” giving). Our average meeting attendance last year was 66%, which begs the question, “Is this an equitable and effective fundraising practice?” ✓ Figuring out how to expand our Social Media presence to add effectiveness to our club communications. (Basically, just figuring out how to better communicate with our members and
26
others.) Part of this challenge happens to be that ways that are effective for communicating with others, including potential new members, are not used by many of our long-time members.
