A Message from the Club President By Robert Bell Each month our members spend dozens of hours working with the Packed with Pride food pantry. We obtain hundreds of pounds of food from local grocery stores, transport that food to Tigard High School, help organize the food for families and help distribute the food to hundreds of food insecure families in the Tigard- Tualatin School District. For over 20 years, twice each month, our members prepare and serve the evening meal for homeless families with children living at the Good Neighbor Center in Tigard. In December we rang bells for the Salvation Army, raising over $1100 dollars helping to support their mission to serve those in need. Our Club continues to support the Sherwood High School Key Club with their service activities. Sue Cummins, as Key Club Advisor, spends innumerable hours working with the students. We are helping seven members of the Sherwood HS Key Club attend the Pacific Northwest District Key Club Convention in March. In addition, Sue Cummins and our Builder’s Club Faculty Advisor, Amy Christie, will be attending the Convention as chaperones. Between assisting with the expenses for the seven Key Clubbers attending the Convention, and covering the expenses of 2 chaperones, our club will be expending over $1,700. This is something we can all be proud of. In an effort to raise funds for our service projects, we have adopted a new fundraising project – delivering floral arrangements for a local florist on Valentine’s Day and for Mother’s Day. On Valentine’s Day, (February 14th), 5 teams of two members each will off be delivering flowers. The club receives $8 for each Message from the President Page 2 arrangement delivered. By George Deibert Three years ago, January 2021, we started at Tualatin Fred Meyers to move donation grocery food to a young “Covid-born” food distribution operation aimed at helping the youth in need at the seventeen TigardTualatin district schools. Today, we are collecting and processing it into the PWP hub twice-a-week with our club and the Kiwanis Club of Tualatin and four good “friends of Kiwanis” who regularly help out. The need for this hands-on service to the community is as great as ever; and we’ll all be lucky to still be helping in three years to come.

A Fun Evening… By Sue Cummins We had a really good time. One group played a card game called “3/13”; and another table enjoyed poker! We all actually managed to stay awake until midnight. At the last minute, we turned on the TV, watched the drones in the sky over Seattle and welcomed in the new year!

Club News Welcome to two of our newest members… Judy Munger and Sean Munger. Guess how they are related!
Judy Munger was born and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, and attended schools in Campbell, California. She graduated from Campbell High School and attended San Jose State College (now university). Her first Kiwanis experience was in 1956 at the Kiwanis International Convention in San Francisco. Her uncle was a Kiwanian in Oxnard, California, and attended the convention with his wife. Judy was engaged to babysit their children at the hotel while they attended the convention events. Kiwanis remained in her memory ever since. Judy joined the Kiwanis Club of Ross Island Earlyrisers in 2000, and served as president in 2004-05 and 2012-13, both “Distinguished”. She was the project leader for Children’s Photo ID, Wine Raffle, and assisted with Club Annual Installation planning. She served as Pacific Northwest District First Lady in 2014-15 alongside Governor Bob Munger. She transferred her membership to the Kiwanis Club of Tigard in October 2023. Judy is a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, a very active and enthusiastic genealogist, expert at paper crafts, an accomplished artist and instructor of Dimensional Tole painting, amateur historian for the shipwreck Peter Iredale and the USS Shark, loves the Oregon beach, and is the keeper of the family lore. Children include daughter Robyn in Omaha, NE, son Sean, member of the Kiwanis Club of Tigard, two grandsons, Robby and Riley, also in Omaha. High school sweethearts, Judy and Bob just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Sean Munger is a historian. Prior to getting his Ph.D. in environmental history at the University of Oregon, he was an attorney and practiced commercial real estate law in the Portland area for 12 years. He got his law degree at Tulane University Law School in New Orleans in 1998. He has written several books, (fiction and non-fiction), such as "The Valley of Forever" and "Zombies of Byzantium." He has been published in academic and law journals, and he often gives talks on various historical topics. For example, he has been an occasional speaker at McMenamins "History Pub" nights. For the past 5 years he has been teaching history, 6th, 7th and 8th grade, at a charter school in east Portland. His YouTube channel (https://youtube.com/@SeanMunger), on which he does primarily historical videos, has become quite prominent on YouTube during 2023. He also previously hosted the podcasts "Second Decade," a historical show, and "Green Screen," a show about how the environment is dealt with in popular movies. One of his areas of historical expertise is the history of climate and climate change, which led to both of those podcasts. He first joined Kiwanis in 2004 and was President of the Ross Island Earlyrisers Club in 2007-08. For many years he has coached high school students in the “We the People/Classroom Law Project” constitutional/civics debate club, a program that has often been supported through Kiwanis.

More Club News It is with a great deal of sadness that we are in the process of saying “goodbye” to our youngest member, who has been with our Kiwanis family since her freshman year of high school, when she was a Key Clubber. In the near future, Marlene Wilson will be moving away. Below is a pictorial tribute to her time in our club…
Club Vote Needed With Marlene’s resignation as a Club Director, it is important to fill that position on the Board as quickly as possible. A nomination has been made for Sheylinn Gano to finish out Marlene’s 2023-2026 term of office. This nomination will be officially announced at the February 7th club meeting. A “Yes/No” written ballot will be distributed at the February 21st meeting, as well as through email for those who can’t attend the meeting.

Endowment Trust Atlanta-based author and speaker Beth-Sarah Wright inspired me to have newfound respect for our Tigard Kiwanis Endowment Trust. Mrs. Wright writes, “Did you know the Latin root of the word ‘respect’ is specere or to look? Respect literally means to look again.” The Edward Jones account value for the trust was $87,911.82 as of December 31, 2023. Respect is due to our Financial Advisor Corey Broughton. One year ago, the account value was $83K. Way to go, Corey! Respect is also due to our three doners last year who gave $2700. Please look again at the Tigard Kiwanis Endowment Trust. Gifts are taxdeductible. Scholarships and other aid for local youth result from the Endowment each year. I plan to give $1000 this year. Who will match that gift? Who will double it? Every Monday & Thursday morning we process food donations with the Packed with Pride program at Tigard High School. On the first and third Wednesday of each month at 4 p.m. we distribute that food. If you wish to participate, please contact our club by clicking HERE.

By Bob Munger The Kiwanis Club of Tigard has an agreement with Flowers by Donna to deliver flower arrangements for Valentines Day. It is recommended that deliveries be made by teams of two, one to drive and the other to navigate. It would be optimal if SUVs, Vans, or Hatchback cars are used for delivery. The cargo area needs to accommodate three or four open-top boxes approximately 3 feet long and 12 inches wide. Transporting arrangements in these boxes keeps the flower containers from tipping over while driving. The flower shop is located at 11700 SW Hall Blvd. in Tigard. The first team needs to be at the shop at 9:00 a.m. with subsequent teams arriving at 15-minute intervals. The flower deliveries are by zip code, and the routes are computer optimized to provide a logical sequence of deliveries. Pairs will receive a sheet with the names, addresses, and phone numbers of the people who are receiving the flowers. If no one is home, call the number and leave a voice mail saying where the flowers were left. After finishing one group of deliveries, return to the shop and pick up another group. Anticipate spending most of the day on the job. The club will be paid $8 for each delivery made. A typical day’s income should be around $700.

They brought in over $450 and had a great time singing carols to the customers entering the store.
Key Club members continue to assist with Builders Club projects. In December they helped make “sock snowmen”.

Each year, on February 1st, the Key Club submits an Annual Achievement Report to Key Club International. The club receives a quantitative score on its program of work. The criteria below are used to determine a club’s “score”

Most clubs end up with a score of around 80 to 90 points. The Sherwood score this year was 131 points! This is really close to what is needed to qualify as a Distinguished Club!
By Jet Nguyen (Key Club Co-President) This past year has been one of not just growth, but of change. Sherwood Key Club has begun a new chapter in leadership and club structure. With the officer's attendance at District Convention in 2023, we all agreed to focus on improving our club utilizing our experience from DCON. Our service hours per member has doubled over the previous year, along with over $1000 raised for charitable purposes. Of course, numbers mean little without truly understanding the impact behind them: 500 hours of service to our local and neighboring communities has allowed Key Clubbers to influence the people they served, and indirectly influence the people they come into contact with afterwards. And while there will always be room for improvement, I fondly look back on all the accomplishments we have already completed; and I look forward, with anticipation, to continuing this this momentum in the final months of my term. For our club and the incoming officers for thethe upcoming term, this truly is the beginning.

Doernbecher (KDCCP) News By John Brookens Things of note: 1. Don’t forget that the KDCCP Dr. Patrick DeMartino is a guest speaker at the PNW Mid-Winter Conference. That’s happening February 16-18 in Portland. 2. Also, just a reminder: Kiwanis raised the money to purchase and install the Bone Marrow Transplant unit at Doernbecher. It remains the only one in Oregon for both children and adults. 3. Is our club interested in scheduling a 30-minutes KDCCP presentation? We can do so by going to kiwanisdoernbecher.org, (or we can probably just ask John). 4. Our club has, in the past, participated with a golf team at the KDCCP golf tournament. This year’s tournament is being held on May 10, 2024, at Camas Meadows in Vancouver Washington. (Online sign-ups are not yet available.) Announcements regarding Kiwanis Day at Doernbecher will be published soon! Keep a look-out for the details. We had a large group attend last year… and we’ll want to continue our support for the program!
