Family Friendly Pass : 5 tickets for $45 This project is made possible in part by a grant from New Mexico Arts with support from the National Endowment for the Arts.
Dear Friends: Our new season unfolds in a changing, more diverse world than when we first began sixteen years ago. We see it every day all around us. The Internet has made everyone our next door neighbors, and YouTube has made them stars. This combination is creating a new culture. As times change, some things do remain constant, such as the arts reflecting, guiding, and even transforming our lives. Our differences as humans are brought together by the power of music, dance, and live performance. This is what makes the arts so powerful, and why today, we need them more than ever. Since we first started the series, our goal was to “bring the world to you,” and with the aid of our wonderful presenting partner, The Citizen’s Bank of Clovis, we have. This season is no exception. It is full of remarkable and astonishing artists of different cultures, traditions, and backgrounds, performing just for you, our audience. Each one of them is teaching us just a little bit more of who they are, and doing their best to unite us in this endeavor called life. If you have a moment, I urge you to get to know who these talented artists are on social media or YouTube. Fasten your seatbelts, because we’re going for a grand ride this season. As always, enjoy your season,
Christy Mendoza Cultural Arts Series Director
The mission of the CCC Cultural Arts Series is to provide diverse cultural programming of the highest quality by presenting international and regionally produced works to underserved audiences in eastern New Mexico communities.
Dear Friends of the Arts: On behalf of the Board of Directors and employees of The Citizens Bank of Clovis, we are thrilled to once again “bring the world” to eastern New Mexico and serve as the presenting sponsor of the 2016-2017 Cultural Arts Series. As one of the largest, family owned community banks in east-central New Mexico, we are proud of our deep and lasting roots in the area and have dedicated resources to help build a strong community and enhance the quality of life for area residents. Since 1916, our commitment and involvement in the community has been an important part of the way we do business. We congratulate Clovis Community College, the CAS Advisory Board, staff and the many volunteers who bring the Series to life, and we urge you to join us in supporting the Cultural Arts Series program – a wonderful community asset. Best Regards,
Kent Carruthers President

Born in the streets of Los Angeles, Las Cafeteras are children of immigrants who are remixing roots music and telling modern day stories with what LA Times has called a “uniquely mishmash of punk, hip-hop, beat music, and rock … Live, they’re magnetic.” Las Cafeteras has taken the music scene by storm with their infectious live performances, seamlessly fusing traditional Afro-Mexican music from Veracruz, Mexico with modern rhythms. Their eclectic instrumentation includes jarana’s, requinto, a donkey jawbone, a West African bass instrument called the Marimbol, cajón, and a wooden platform called the Tarima used to dance Zapateado. Las Cafeteras dance effortlessly across musical borders playing infectious shows with bands such as Mexican icons Café Tacuba, Lila Downs, Los Lobos, and most recently with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra. lascafeteras.com

Back to Clovis by popular demand are the premier western singing group, Sons of the Pioneers. For over 80 years, the Pioneers have musically painted unforgettable images and stories that have become synonymous with the American West and Cowboy. The Pioneers' songs were original compositions freshly penned by the original members, Bob Nolan, Tim Spencer, and Roy Rogers. The group and their music garnered millions of national and international fans through appearances in over 90 movies, numerous radio shows, well known label recording projects and, later, television appearances. They have accumulated more recording honors and awards than anyone in Western music including coveted awards from the Academy of Country Music and the National Cowboy Hall of Fame. The Smithsonian Institute named them as “National Treasures. www.sonsofthepioneers.org

The StepCrew is a new dynamic dance production combining three styles of percussive dance featuring the world’s top talents in Irish, Tap and Ottawa Valley Stepdancing. This amazing company is led by Cara Butler, best known as The Chieftains’ principal Irish dancer, and The Pilatzke Brothers, Jon and Nathan, who are undoubtedly Canada’s leading and most exciting Ottawa Valley Stepdancers. The StepCrew is a pure celebration of dance showcasing each traditional form while creating what Jean Butler of Riverdance fame describes as “a unique and seamless blend of all three.” One of The StepCrew’s “secret weapons” is its musical ensemble – from Canadian champion fiddle players to some of the most sought-after musicians in the Celtic, folk, and rock genres. As stated in The Boston Telegraph, “The cast was outstanding. The group’s energy dazzles. The StepCrew will have the audience literally, on its feet!” stepcrew.com

Many stories involving musicians also involve family. Tejano Music, being bred of numerous cultures and migratory histories, is conducive to families gathering around playing different instruments, singing songs of triumph, love, and celebration. The story of Monica Y Grupo Mezcal is a shining example of how music enlivens and promotes a sense of connection – a connection to each other, to ourselves, to our families, and our history. Tejano music is the sound of a generation. Monica y Grupo Mezcal, is a perfect mixture of “old, new, and true.” The soul of the band comes from Monica Pacheco, who got her start when she was 13 years old as a vocalist in her fathers Luis Pacheco’s band Mezcal. Monica’s vocals and presence are reminiscent of icons Laura Canales and Selena Quintanilla, yet uniquely her own. Monica y Grupo Mezcal, 5 powerful musicians creating a unified sound of Tejano Music right out of West Texas.

Indulge in the sounds of the finest Canadian guitarists of African origin, 2005 Juno Award winners for World Music Album of the Year, African Guitar Summit. This all-star collective unites the talents of 5 musicians, each an expert in their individual style, who began their journey together when they participated in a unique project for CBC Radio’s On Stage program. The program invited several Canadian-based African-born musicians who were selected based on their personal interpretations of guitar music of their respective native countries, including Guinea, Rwanda, Ghana, Kenya, and Madagascar. African Guitar Summit features Madagascar-born guitarist Donne Roberts, the Malagasy-inspired blues of Madagascar Slim, the nomadic West African sound of Alpha Yaya Diallo from Madagascar, Ghana drummer Kofi Ackah, and Guinea native Naby Kamara on the balafon, a wooden instrument similar to a xylophone. Experience live this superb and unique achievement for African music! CCC presents African Guitar Summit as part of Black History Month.

Tartan Terrors are their own Celtic invasion, mixing rock's energy with traditional folklore, dance, and humor. Featuring classic pipes and fiddle, driving drum tones, and signature guitar styles, the group brings a kilted extravaganza of a two time World Champion bagpiper and championship Highland dancers. Members of the Tartan Terrors have performed all over the world in some of the most prestigious festivals, Highland Games, theaters, and for entertaining U.S. presidents, British queens, and have even been highlighted on Good Morning America. Audiences, young and old alike, had better be ready to clap their hands, stomp their feet and laugh until their sides hurt. Wear a kilt, paint your face blue, and enjoy a fun-filled performance as you have never seen before and see why Celtic Beat Magazine hails them as "the heirs apparent to the Celtic mayhem!" www.tartanterrors.com
