become teachers at Clovis High School. Ms. Phillips: Recently, I saw a former student working in Clovis. I didn’t remember too much about her, but she remembered me and thanked me for saving her life and her baby’s life. Then I remembered that she came to class and her face was super swollen. She had been crying. It is a big deal to have a swollen face when you are pregnant. I insisted she go to the nurse, even though she didn’t want to. She went to the restroom instead, and I sent a student to find her and walk her to the nurse. The nurse sent her straight to the hospital. She was airlifted to Lubbock, and it all turned out well. Ms. Mejia: I still have hopes of completing my doctorate degree in the field of psychology so only time will tell where I end up! Ms. Phillips: If I wasn’t a teacher, I might be in the social work area or maybe a historical fiction author. What do you envision being your biggest challenge this year? Coach Hatley: My biggest challenge this year would be to help kids get through life. Coach Robinsion: Helping students be successful on the PARCC. Coach Cruse: As a

challenge, every year it is difficult to get students to be willing to open up and learn and not be scared to be wrong in answers. Coach Reed: The biggest challenge is basically what is every year and that is to get certain students who do not care to care. Mr. Baca: My biggest challenge this year is keeping up with grading papers and writing lesson plans finding and using time. Coach Kelley: The biggest challenge is finding time to balance my teaching and assistant Athletic Director duties. Ms. Mejia: This year I took on being the StuCo advisor, and, in a lot of ways, I am challenged daily trying to change the status quo and help the culture of CHS to become a more positive one. Mr. Everhart (Chair): My biggest challenge is time for actual teaching; the state requires too many other things that take’s away from instructional time. Ms. Phillips: Keeping up with all the administrative stuff and not letting it interfere with what I know is the best for my students. Having time to teach!! In your opinion who will win the presidential election? Coach Hatley: In my opinion, Clinton will win. Coach Robison: Donald Trump Coach Cruce: Probably Clinton Coach Reed: I really don’t like either candidate. I think they both lie and have a lot of issues. I have to vote for Trump, though, because he is pro life. I don’t know if he will win though. Mr. Baca: Based on recent events, I believe Hillary Clinton will win the election. Ms. Mejia: Well, it’s a hard one! It’s so close! I really don’t know which way it will toss up in the end! I guess we will just have to wait and see! Mr. Everhart (Chair): I have not committed to either of the two main candidates. Ms .Phillips: I think Hillary Clinton will win. Do you have a favorite historical moment? Coach Hatley: French

Revolution Coach Robinson: Too many to name. Coach Cruce: I love D-Day and what it meant for Americans in WWII. Coach Reed: I don’t’ think I have just one historical moment. I do like learning and teaching about WWII though. Mr. Baca: My favorite historical moment has to be when Jesus Christ was living on Earth. The impact Jesus had on those alive during his time and continuing today and forever is tremendous. Coach Kelley: My favorite historical moment is the 1940s because we emerged from a Depression, and it became evident to the world how great and powerful the United States is. Ms.Mejia: Well, it’s not really a historical moment but more of my favorite historical person. Growing up my parents had a framed picture of President John F. Kennedy. They told me stories about how during the Guerrilla Wars in El Salvador, President JFK would send small lunch packages to help with the food shortage. As a young adult I have read a lot of his speeches and he inspires me to be a better American. Mr.Everhart (Chair): Its not a favorite, but memorable. Sept.11, 2001 was a traumatic time for us, and still sticks in my mind. Ms.Phillips: I love to teach WWI and the poetry from that time. In your opinion what is an important question that history asks of each generation? Coach Robinson: Will you repeat the mistakes of the past? Coach Cruce: What will your generation be known for? Coach Reed: Two important question that each generation has to ask is how are they going to improve the world while they are here, and are they going to learn about the mistakes of the past and not to repeat them. Mr. Baca: The question history asks of every generation is can you learn

from mistakes already made and push forward with experience and knowledge to make tomorrow better than yesterday. Coach Kelley: History asks each generation “What are you going to contribute to make our country and world a better place?” Ms. Mejia: History, in my opinion, is the most important subject because it reminds us to re-examine the past in order to avoid the mistakes that lead us to trouble in the future. One of my history professors said it best: “History always repeats itself, and, if you watch for the trends, you will be ahead of the game.” Mr. Everhart (Chair): How can we make a better today for tomorrow? Ms. Phillips: Can you improve on our country? Can you keep the ideals of our Founders and the visionaries throughout our history alive and vibrant? If you had three words to describe yourself, what would they be? Coach Hatley: Passionate. Intense. Demanding. Coach Robinson: Loyal and Hard working. Coach Cruce: Tough, competitive, and caring. Coach Reed: Competitive, intense, and passionate. Mr. Baca: Three words that might describe me are serious, passionate, and dedicated. Coach Kelley: Dedicated, Hardworking, Humorous. Ms.Mejia: Loyal, Passionate, And Sensitive. Mr. Everhart (Chair): Stubborn, competitive, passionate. Ms. Phillips: Hysterical oops I mean historical, happy, seeker (of knowledge) After having the opportunity of interviewing the Social Studies Department, we realized that this is a department with many teachers focused on one goal: they expect greatness and nothing less from their students. We also want to say thank you to the entire Social Studies Department for taking time out of their busy schedules and giving us new insights for a bold future.

Opposite Sides Of The Spectrum

And The Winner Is...

Mackenzie Credle Co Editor-In-Chief Today, everyone is getting out and heading to the polls. It’s election day, and we all have a big choice to make. Who will be the next President of the United States? I think it should be Donald Trump, and I hope you all come to the same conclusion. He is not without faults, but I think that his flaws are microscopic compared to Hillary Clinton’s. This article’s entire purpose is to give everyone a final summary of the best candidate and to remind everyone of the influence that every citizen has on shaping the future of our country. People, from the beginning of time, have sought ways to be heard, and some people find writing on the walls to be their prefered method of speech; however, something I saw written in a bathroom, right on the mirror, made me feel like I needed to address these comments. To sum the statements up, they were generally saying to “vote for Hillary Clinton because Donald Trump would deport Mexican citizens. What some people may not know is that Donald Trump

only wants to rid America of Mexican Citizens that are in our country illegally and insure that every immigrant is brought in through the legal immigration process. If they are a citizen of Mexico, living in the United States illegally, they will go through a screening process to see if they should receive a work visa that will lead to gaining citizenship. Nationality is different from race, and many people seem to forget that. Donald Trump is trying to rid our country of the people who came to America to get a free pass in an unlawful way, not the people who came to America for a fresh start legally. There is a major difference between the two, and I am happy to put my trust into a candidate who agrees with me. A position that isn’t officially on Donald Trump’s website and platform, but is important to me, is the Roe v. Wade decision that dictates the law on abortion in America today. I think that all lives are important, and that includes the unborn. Trump thinks that abortions should be illegal except for special circumstances, like if the mother’s health is at risk. Trump was quoted saying,

“The primary responsibility of the federal government is to protect the rights of its citizens. Life is the most fundamental right. The federal government should not diminish this right by denying its protection.” This view is something that is very controversial. If someone has made the decision to have an abortion, that doesn’t make that individual a bad person, but I think that our government should protect the lives of people who can’t fend for themselves, and that includes unborn children. The libertarian candidate, Gary Johnson, has been taking several Republican votes from Donald Trump. Johnson has a strong campaign, and I agree with several of his positions; however, in my opinion, voting for an independent candidate is a wasted vote. Sure, if enough people vote for this independent candidate, there is a chance that the candidate might be elected; but everyone should know that the only independent candidate to be elected was George Washington, and political parties didn’t exist then! For anyone who doesn’t remember his or her US History class, Washington was against the

And the Winner Is...

whole idea of political parties, thinking they would divide the nation. He was right, and the system in our country is broken, but a vote for an independent candidate will only break the system even more. If anything, I hope that everyone reading this shows up to vote today! The polls are open today from seven a.m. to seven p.m.; they say if you are in line at 7:00 p.m. that they will still allow you to vote, but I would vote early just to be safe. There are several items on the ballot, not just for the Presidential office, but also for a Justice on New Mexico’s Supreme Court, one of our Representatives in Congress, and voting on referenda that have a huge impact on our universities, our libraries, and resources for senior citizens. We need to all show up and vote for what is most important to us, and I hope when you go to the polls and make a decision about the Presidential Office, you decide to vote for someone who is honest about his past, who wants to change the future, and wants to "Make America Great Again!"

My Vote Goes To...

Austin Hodges Co Editor-In-Chief

After writing about who I I want to give my vote to for the last two months, I have found I truly dislike Mrs. Clinton, and their are two main reasons as to why I have this opinion. For one, I really cannot trust a person who denies events that happened even though there is clear evidence as to what actually happened. Furthermore, I really cannot agree morally with a person who is ProChoice. Now I know that I am going to strike a nerve with some of you who are reading this, but keep in mind this is my opinion and everyone is entitled to their own. One of the biggest turnoffs to a candidate

running for President for me is when they have been proven to have committed murder, but still deny it. As some of you know, Mrs. Clinton has been proven to know what was going to happen at the Benghazi disaster before it even happened; yet she chose not do anything about it. And before anyone fires back at me, saying that it is not true, I am arriving at my own conclusion about the incident. For those of you that do not know, the Benghazi incident was a terrorist attack on Benghazi, Libya. The reports that came back from the embassy stated that four people were killed, including the U.S. ambassador of Libya and three other U.S. nationals. Clearly Mrs. Clinton lied to the American people about what she knew about the

Benghazi disaster.

Another reason I have decided that I do not want Mrs. Clinton for President is the fact that she is Pro-Choice. I am a Christian. I believe that abortion is fundamentally murder. I get that abortion is somewhat ok if the baby was a result of rape or the mother’s life is in danger, but it does not exclude the fact that the mother can have the choice kill the child when she was the one to make the choices that led up to the pregnancy. At that point the baby would not have even had a chance to live if an abortion is decided. The baby didn’t ask to be made, and is not the one that deserves to die because of the irresponsible choices that the mother made. Think about what would have happened if your mother

had decided to abort you. How would the world be different without you? Those are the two biggest reasons I do not want Mrs. Clinton to be President. I feel Mrs. Clinton would make a great President if the Benghazi incident had been handled differently and she changed her opinion on abortion. She has the people skills to be a good President, and I agree with some of the things that she stands for. Now I know that neither candidate is perfect and they both have flaws in the way they do things, but I view Donald’s actions to be a little bit more reasonable than Mrs. Clinton’s, and that’s why for the 2016 Presidential election, my vote goes to none other than Donald Trump.

WARNING!!! Read Before Lunch Donovan Hackett Staff Writer With Thanksgiving coming closer, food is on my mind. Thus, giving me the idea to do an article about foods that go along with the season. It would be very wise for you to read this article right before the lunch period. There will only be food on this list, thus, you should not expect any drinks or traditions. Main Course: Ham I don’t mind turkey. I just have a small problem with it. No matter how much you season or marinade the turkey, the meat is always dry and, on occasion, tasteless. However, ham tends to keep its juices. Also, an uncooked ham has many possibilities for flavor. It all depends on the chef. Last year, I had a ham with a Dr. Pepper and Brown Sugar marinade. We also had a ham flavored with pineapple. These different styles of marinades made the Ham taste amazing and made me love them very much. Main Course: Turkey

Personally, I am not the biggest fan of turkey, but to others, you can’t have Thanksgiving without it. I hope that those of you who enjoy light meat enjoy your meal. Let’s just say, I have never had a turkey without dry meat. Many of you do season it in such a way that it stays moist and flavorful. It is a traditional dish that any

This recipe is proof that a sometimes delicious food doesn’t have to be complicated. Simply combine a boiled egg, with some relish, mayo, a dash of mustard and a dash of paprika. Many of us have had this food at different celebrations. Side: Stuffing This dish tends to be more complicated, but is worth it for

Thanksgiving meal wouldn't be complete without. Side: Deviled Eggs

those of you who like a tangy taste in your food. It is well seasoned and is identified by the

parts of the food that look like croutons. Like I said, a tangy taste that warms up the rest of your plate. Side: Giblet Gravy Personally, this is one of my favorite dishes out of all the sides included on this list. Some people undoubtedly find it weird to put the heart, gizzards, liver, neck, and other parts of the turkey into gravy, but I find that this side dish is really quite delectable. (By the way, if you boil the neck in the gravy, then it will help flavor it and you can cut the meat off the neck for a delicacy.) It's something that would be fun to try this Thanksgiving. Side: Mashed Potatoes A true classic in American foods, mashed potatoes are served at restaurants and home meals with gravy and seem to be the keystone of a meal on multiple occasions. This dish also has multiple ways of making it, from smooth instant butter mix to home grown and smashed potatoes. I think you may be missing out on something if you

haven’t tried this food. Side: Potato Salad You can do a lot with potatoes: chips, French fries, mashed potatoes, and the ever so tasty potato salad. A little pickle can go a long way with this recipe. This dish is either too crunchy or too soft for most people, but don’t feel bad if it is not good the first few times. You can call yourself an experienced cook if you can make the potato salad just right after a few tries, and a chef prodigy if you manage to get it exactly right the first time. Dessert: Pumpkin Pie

What could be more classic than pie? Also, what is more versatile in its ingredients than other foods? I will tell you. The answer is pie. Pumpkin pie is one of the more famous sweets on Thanksgiving. Some people prefer to sprinkle cinnamon on it, even though most recipes already include cinnamon, I for one prefer whipped cream on mine, preferably homemade. Dessert: Sweet Potato Pie I will be straightforward with you; I do not like sweet potato pie. Something about it just doesn’t taste good to me, but

other people really enjoy it. For those of you who haven't tried it, try it this Thanksgiving, it could become a new favorite. Dessert: Chocolate Pie Chocolate and pie, who knew two tasty things could be combined to make another delicious food? How good it is depends on how you make it. I find it mostly delicious whenever it comes down to a graham cracker or an Oreo crust. Add some whipped cream and you have an amazing dessert right in front of you. Desert: Cheesecake

5

Not quite as versatile as the pies, but still delicious, is cheesecake. Graham cracker crust is the only thing that is good for this creamy desert. While it has very few variations, the toppings are all on you. Personally, I find strawberries to be a more flavorful option. If you see one of your favorites, or something new you would like to try, go for it! Have an amazing Thanksgiving!

Be Thankful! It's A Tradition Ohajenie Hannah Staff Writer Thanksgiving is supposed to be a peaceful and great time to visit family. Most people have their own traditions when it comes to Thanksgiving. But this is how some end up going. “The event that Americans commonly call first thanksgiving was celebrated by the pilgrims after their first Harvest in 1621. This feast lasted three days and it was attended by ninety Native Americans and fifty-three pilgrims.” According to the History Channel, “Pilgrims held their second Thanksgiving celebration in 1623 to mark the end of a long drought that had threatened the year’s harvest and prompted Governor Bradford to call for a religious fast. Days of fasting and Thanksgiving on an annual or occasional basis became common practice in other New England settlements as well.” Spending time with one another is vital to the making of Thanksgiving as a holiday, and is still a large part

of the tradition today. In modern times it is even easier to get together, celebrate, and observe this tradition. Sometimes you are going to have to travel to see family. What this means is you might have to set up a place where everyone meets, and if you work a full time job you will have to take time off work so you can celebrate with your

According to National Geographic, “Traditional foods are large part of thanksgiving celebrations.” Many families are large in size. Cheyenne Reganhardt Staff Writer Everyones lining up to save big on Black Friday. Prices are cut to astonishing lows, a DVD player that is usually hundreds of dollars is cut down to only thirty dollars. Black Friday is the fourth Friday in November, or the Friday right after Thanksgiving. It’s marked as the beginning of Christmas shopping. Though everyone dreads Christmas shopping, Black Friday can make it a lot cheaper, if you don’t mind pushing, shoving, and vicious behavior over a pair of earbuds. Black Friday is not an official holiday except in a few states, where only state government employees get the day off. These states are Arkansas, California, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, West Virginia and Wisconsin. Even so, 151 million people indulged on Black Friday just last year, according to Sarah Halzack (washingtonpost.com.) However, during that time the emergency room managed to fill up with Black Friday shoppers that got trampled, stabbed, pushed, and many other injuries and didn’t man-

age to get so lucky to get that special Christmas shoppers deal. Black Friday has been around since 1932. It started as a way for businesses considered in the low or in the red of profit to get back in the black and it caused thousands of businesses to “boom” until 2014 when the amount of money stores received on Black Friday dropped down by 11%, according to Wikipedia.

which has caused people to camp out at stores in order to get what they need or want first. Some are successful. Although, shoppers still get trampled at the doors. The campers usually end up using propane and/or generators and blocking emergency access and fire lanes causing at least one city to ban the practice. Even though the media insists it is one of the busiest days of shopping, in 1993-

This is because retailers are starting to spread their deals across November and December instead of focussing on one single day of shopping. On Black Friday, stores have changed from opening at 8 a.m. to opening at 4 a.m.

2001, it dropped from fifth busiest shopping day to tenth, according to Wikipedia. Some stores such as Rue 21 and Sears are saying that Black Friday is dead. Too many people are getting trampled and hurt. They do not want

to come. Since 2006, seven reported deaths and 98 injuries in the United States have happened in the USA in-result of Black Friday. In 2008, an employee was trampled to death. The shoppers did not stop piling in the doors when other employees and even authorities tried to help the man. This might be the first fatality report for a Black Friday incident. Still, a pregnant woman had to be taken to the hospital, a volunteer in Georgia at Toys for Tots was stabbed by a shoplifter, one man in San Leandro, California was shot, two people were shot over a parking space in Tallahassee, Florida, and a person in Las Vegas was shot in the leg over the period from 2008-2013. A women also cut in line and informed others that if they intervened that she would shoot. As a result, she was arrested. Also, a woman was arrested for spraying pepper spray in order “to get an advantage”, Not only do people get hurt but they get arrested, too on Black Friday. Black Friday is an amazing way not to break the bank Christmas shopping but are you prepared for the competition that's going to be there? You should be, or you will be one of the unlucky ones in the emergency room that day.
