After having the experience of interviewing the English Department, we learned that they are a very passionate group of teachers who really enjoy their work. We thank them for their time and attention in giving our community a peek into whom they are and where they plan to take our fellow students.

An Opinion:

Opposite Sides Of The Spectrum

Can Hillary Be President?

Austin Hodges Co Editor-In-Chief

Many say that Hillary Clinton won the first presidential debate. While I know people still have mixed feelings about the debate overall, after listening to both candidates’ solutions to the problems that were brought up, I believe overall that Mrs. Clinton stood out as the winner of the debate due to the things she said. I especially loved the part of the debate where she brought up the issue of Mr. Trump’s Tax Policy. I also think it was an extremely smart move to bring up the argument for extensive background checks on gun purchases. She did an amazing job vocalizing her argument that the middle class is the class that should be focused on the most, being the majority of this country. Mrs. Clinton seemed much more prepared for the debate. She was very calm and knew just what to say to counteract the points Mr. Trump made. Although interrupting him a few times, Mrs. Clinton did not come nearly as close to how many times Mr. Trump

had interrupted her. In fact, he interrupted her so much during the debate, especially when he threw out side comments in order to make sure he looked better than she was making him out to be. In the end he had a total of thirty-seven interjections. She was well prepared for the questions that were asked, mostly having an idea of how to fix any given problem. When you look at the wrap up, Mrs. Clinton did not avoid as many of the questions as Mr. Trump did. One of Mrs. Clinton’s better arguments was on the topic of the taxation of the upper class. She had great understanding of the problem over all, wanting to increase taxes for the upper class because, when compared to the middle class, the upper class pays very little in the way of taxes. She said multiple times that the middle class should be the class they focus on in the United States, because they pay much more in the way of taxes than the upper class. Mr. Trump wanted to cut taxes for everyone. While I think this would help out with our current economic state, I do not think it is the right approach. If you reduced tax revenue,

there will be less money going into federally funded programs. This could ruin these programs, due to the lack of funding from the government, and could eventually lead to these programs closing overall. She even strengthened her argument by bring up how Mr. Trump has not released his tax returns, breaking the tradition of presidential candidates for the last forty years, and the fact that the only tax release they currently have was when Mr. Trump had to release them to get a casino license in 1996. It showed that he himself paid almost no federal taxes. Another strong argument Mrs. Clinton had at the debate was her stand on gun violence. She does not want to take away guns overall, but only wants to regulate gun purchases. She wants to make sure there are more extensive background checks on those who decide to purchase a gun. That way we keep the guns out of the hands of those who will hurt us, and into the hands of the people. This made me very happy because, if the government had taken all of our guns away, that would have been counter

productive. There will always be a way for people with bad intentions to get guns. The government would only be taking the people’s last defense from those who would hurt others. When Mr. Trump brought up that Mrs. Clinton does not have the stamina to be President, she immediately said that he could talk to her about stamina when he has been to One Hundred and Twelve countries and negotiated a ceasefire, then they could talk about stamina. She also pointed out that Mr. Trump started a rumor that our current President, Barack Obama, is not a U.S. citizen. And with the things he said about building a wall to keep illegal immigrants out and his supposed idea to deport illegal immigrants at the beginning of his campaign, some think he actually said it and meant it. I believe Hillary Clinton showed that she has the stamina to make the necessary decisions to become a great President. I think that Hillary Clinton stands a good chance at becoming the 45th President of the United States.

The Satirical Face Swap: Who does America Want for President?

The Entitled Candidate Vs. Trump

Mackenze Credle Co Editor-In-Chief

As Election day nears, Americans are preparing themselves for the epic showdown that is sure to go down. Weeks of debating and arguing have readied us for what will happen. Still, not everyone is firm in his or her political beliefs, and that is where I come in. As a head strong teenager who loves to debate, I have plenty of opinions, and even more facts to back them up. Today, I will be discussing Donald Trump again and discussing more about what will make him a good President. I will also debate Hillary Clinton’s weaknesses because, right now, in my opinion, she would make a terrible President. Donald Trump has been under heavy fire over a recording found from 2005 where he was caught saying lewd comments about women and telling a story to Billy Bush about trying to convince a married woman to sleep with him. This is a huge speed bump in Trump’s campaign, which is evident by a poll done by the Wall Street Journal showing Clinton gaining an 11-point lead over Trump in the aftermath of the release of the video. The average American isn’t the only one who is offended by Trump’s comments. His running mate, Mike Pence, canceled a campaign event after the video was published; his wife, Melania Trump, said “The words my husband used are unacceptable and offensive to me. This does not represent

the man that I know. He has the heart and mind of a leader. I hope people will accept his apology, as I have, and focus on the more important issues facing our nation and the world.” I am with Melania Trump and think that, while Trump’s comments were offensive and crude, there are bigger fish to fry, such as Hillary Clinton. I was talking amongst my friends, and one boy said that he doesn’t think Hillary Clinton will make a good President. After asking why, I was vexed. He thinks that no “girl” should be President because girls are too soft. As a person who thinks that everyone is destined for greatness I had to set him straight; however, I agree that Clinton is the wrong person for the job, and I know that, in my heart, my decision is in no way influenced by her gender. One can easily see the entitlement that comes with being a Clinton; Hillary Clinton hasn’t driven herself since 1995, and she made jokes about it, but a president elect can’t do one of the basic things that almost every American of age can do. She also is secretive; for example, at the 9/11 Memorial held this past year, Clinton was seen being helped into her car after stumbling off a curb. This made national news; yet, when her running mate, Tim Kaine, was asked for a quote, he had no prior knowledge of her having health issues. Clinton didn’t let her closest advisors or the person she chose to run with her know vital information, so what can be said about her willingness to share with the American

People? Donald Trump said “She doesn’t have the look. She doesn’t have the stamina,” in regards to Hillary Clinton during the first Presidential Debate. Clinton played it off, referencing the many countries that she had visited as the Secretary of State, but that does not hold a candle to the travel of the President. I follow the White House on Snapchat, and they are constantly on the move to host dinners, attend meetings at all hours of the day, and visit many different countries, all in a week’s work. Trump could keep up with this full schedule, he has plenty of experience juggling a full week while running his company. When it comes down to it, we all have a choice, someone who has had chronic health issues and is constantly tired or someone who has had virtually no health problems? I know I would hate to elect someone, and that person have to step down due to medical issues, and I suspect many people feel the same way. Something that many people cannot move past when it comes to Hillary Clinton is the entire Benghazi ordeal. Especially in areas that are heavily military populated, like Clovis, it can be hard to find a defense for Clinton’s actions. For the readers who do not know, a planned attack on two US government facilities in Benghazi left four Americans dead. When the news of the attack broke, the Obama Administration chalked the attack up to a protest about an anti-Muslim video gone wrong, and Secretary

Clinton told everyone that fact, Then she sent an email (that was released) to her daughter, and later sent similar emails to others, saying it was an AlQaida like group. She formed a special team to look for holes in the security of these buildings, and there was nothing found that could be helped. She was even quoted saying “it’s time to move on.” I don’t know about you, but I am sure the families of these fallen people don’t think “it’s time to move on.” They will live with this pain for the rest of their lives. So, why does the Benghazi ordeal come back to Clinton? The Washington Post fact checked this statistic from Donald Trump, but generally speaking, there were over 600 requests and concerns about lack of security and staffing, All of these requests came into Clinton’s office, yet they were still grossly ignored. Who can we “blame” for innocent lives lost, for lack of regard for other’s safety at the expense of a budget, and blant hiding of the truth? I’ll leave that one up to you. With all of the opinions, mine included, out there about these candidates, I highly recommend you do your own research. The fate of our country is in the hands of every single American, and all anyone can hope for is that the people charged with changing America have done adequate research on all of the major issues and are well informed when they vote in November. I am quite sure in the candidate I choose, and that is Donald Trump.

Hey, Stop Clowning Around!

Donovan Hackett Staff Writer With the clowning around slowing down, we thought that it may be time for you to know about what has been happening. History Clowns have been around since ancient Egyptian times; however, these people were originally dubbed fools or jesters with the term “clown” originating from Shakespeare as a term meaning fool. Further more into time, clowns became the giant red nosed entertainers that we see today; however, clowns have also become a part of the horror genre in media. In films, the most common occurrence of this is Pennywise from It. In stories there is a killer clownlike creature named “Laughing Jack.” These characters also presented themselves as enemies in games, such as the clown in the game, “Bewilder House.” Unfortunately, there is also a case of actual murderous clowns. According to ABC news one case was about a man named John Wayne Gacy, a clown who has used the stage name, “Pogo the Clown,” to lure and murder 33 teenagers and young men, in Cook County, Illonois.

The Clown Craze Begins In Forest Manor. South Carolina, a clown was sighted on the edge of the woods attempting to lure women and children into the woods with him. This incident was never photographed, but was investigated all the same. Also, in a sheriff’s office in Greenville county, South Carolina, people had told the police about incidents of people dressed as clowns terrorizing children and adults alike. In one incident, a woman claimed that her son told her about rattling chains and banging noises at his front door. Though some of this is just paranoia, the Sheriff’s office has been investigating these reports. People who reported dared not to give their name in the process. Sightings have not only been reported in South Carolina, but also Wisconsin and California. However, many of these clowns are never found, but whenever they are, police are unable to arrest them. A good example of this is a person in California who dressed up as a creepy clown to scare people. According to the NY Times, he has not been caught, and they could not arrest him if he did seeing how, "As of right now, he hasn't broken any law,” claimed SGT. Tom Weger. Another incident is the scary,

“Wasco Clown.” This clown poses and takes pictures near cities to undoubtedly get a scare out of the people. There was also one time where he was sighted in Albuquerque, NM. Wasco was also sighted in Jacksonville, Florida. Some people have even taken this to threatening people on Facebook. A post said that nobody knew who a victim would be. This post caused several other high schools to go on lockdown, and our very own Clovis High School chose not to go on lockdown and instead strengthened the security on campus. The two others took place in Florida and Pennsylvania before a few people in Florida were arrested for the post. Clowns Get a Bad Reputation Now, not all clowns are bad, but they are getting a bed reputation. As a matter of fact, many towns and schools are banning clown costumes on Halloween. I know a person who likes to wear clown makeup, but because of this whole mess, he can’t walk around in it without being afraid of someone either calling the police or coming out to beat him themselves. All this mess is doing, is making things worse for people. Many clowns are entertainers.

Sure, some of them don’t need any help to be scary, but they are honest people trying to entertain you. I may hold an unpopular opinion about this clown scare, but I am only attempting to help the people who are being hurt by these individuals who only bluff and scare people. What is a creepy clown anyhow? I’ll tell you. A creepy clown is someone who just wants a scare or perhaps recognition, sometimes they may be going for both. What is their true goal? Maybe some people think they see the clown, but it’s all in their imagination. Will we ever really know? Stop this clowning around. People are only getting scared and paranoid. If this hoax stops, then perhaps honest clowns will actually go back to being entertainers in society. Clowns may lose this reputation that hurts them and others that are close to them. There is nothing constructive about this clown chaos. All it’s doing is stopping people from doing something positive and instead causing paranoia. Whoever started this must not have realized that, because of their mischief, people are having to put their lives on hold.

The Perfect Halloween Party! Purple Press, Oct. 26, 2016

Ohajine Hannah Staff Writer

The perfect Halloween party does not need to have alcohol and drugs at it; that is how accidents happen. Halloween parties should be fun and times you can remember with your friends, not times where you do stupid things and the next day you do not remember what you had for dinner. Sometimes alcohol can lead to bad decisions and violence. That’s why having drugs at the party isn’t good, and you will not have as much fun if they are there. Halloween parties should have fruit punch, a foggy drink that would be cool so that way people can have something cool instead of just a plain cup of fruit punch, but NO ALCOHOL. Decorate your house (the whole house). Make one room the hangout room where everyone can talk to all their friends and be as loud as they want. Make sure you are nice to everyone and welcome them into your party. Make sure you greet everyone that comes in, make them feel like you really want them there. Make sure that you have enough food and drinks, and popcorn if they want to go watch the movies, look at the top 10 movies in our

paper that can help you find good ones, chips for people that don’t want to eat right away and just want to snack on some thing, get pizza for the people that want to eat, have different desserts there for the ones who

everyone freak out. Buy silly string because then you can catch people off guard and just start attacking them with it. After a while, give them one and you guys just go at it with the silly string. You can have a station

loves sweets. So you’re not just sitting there with nothing to do/ eat. I would have a game room for the ones that think games are the only fun thing to do. It would be fun to set up a prank on everyone. Set a time for the electricity to just power off and see how everyone reacts. You can even just have fake blood dripping from the T.V and the doors and see

where they can go and carve their own pumpkins so that way they can have a pumpkin to take home and give to their parents or even just put it outside their house. If you really want to be creative, then you can get the stuff to make your own candles for the pumpkins (put them inside the pumpkin). Put a room with music and things like that so people who want to dance, can dance, and

5

have fun (make sure you have spooky music and today’s hits). You can even have a room for the ones who want to be there but wants to stay on their phones and not just standing around in the way of the people that are trying to walk around and be social and have fun so that way there is less problems at your party. It would be fun to make it to where you have to dress up, or, if some one don’t have a costume he/she can go to the room where they can find some stuff to put on for a costume (create your own costume). Make it to where the people that never get invited to parties or anything can get in too. Don’t leave them out. Make this Halloween special for everyone not just your friends and the cool kids invite everyone so they can have fun too. Not every party need to have drugs and alcohol in it to be fun. Sometimes it just takes the right person/people to have fun. The more people invite, the more friends and people you know will have your back. So this year/next year try to throw a Halloween party, invite everyone to it, and do not have alcohol in it. HAPPY HALLOWEEN EVERYONE!!

The Top Ten Scary Monsters

Donovan Hackett Stephanie Ramirez Staff Writer With Halloween right around the corner, we decided to make a list of the spooks of the season. Now then, there are rules to this list. First, they must be from a horror movie or a film meant to be scary, so not creatures such as Godzilla. Godzilla is not meant to be scary, but just a monster on screen. Two, the characters on this list must be the main antagonist, so maniacs from these films will also work just fine. Last, but not least, this is our opinion and some people are bound to disagree. So without further ado let’s start talking about terrors. 10. Pennywise: It What scares people most? Some say that it is fear of the girl you can’t talk to,

some claim that the answer is clearly the dark; however, if you ask others, you will undoubtedly hear clowns as an answer. Pennywise, the Dancing Clown, was a persona used by a creature or perhaps spirit to torture and kill children. One of his better known acts was when a child chased a paper boat to a drain. The boat was then returned to the child and a clown introduced himself as Pennywise, who had asked the child to go with him further into the sewers to a carnival. The item that seemed to cinch this for him was balloons, and this quote was used to talk to the child, “Yes, they float down here Georgie. They all float.” Once Georgie agreed to this, Pennywise killed him brutally and used his abilities to influence the thoughts of people that have had some kind of knowledge about his existence. The reason he is low on this list

is due to how he is not that well known. 9. Xenomorph: Alien Sci-fi horror, I don’t know a single person that hates it. That is why we determined that we should have a monster that is out of this world. Hailing from an alien planet, the Xenomorph is a deadly creature. It starts off as a creature that would kill you by bursting out of your chest after it has grown inside your body. Afterwords it becomes a black reptile like creature with two mouths and a tail as sharp as a spear. There is only one remedy for this breed of hive creature; let’s just say while around these things, go ahead and play with fire. The alien will get you eventually, though. 8. Michael Meyers: Halloween Nothing screams murderous psychopath like a guy wearing a white humanlike mask with

red hair wearing a blue suit worn by mechanics attempting to stab you a lot of times with a knife. The fact that he is a silent killer makes him all the more terrifying. Michaels backstory was quite bloody. One year during Halloween he had killed his abusive father and his sister’s boyfriend then proceeding to kill his sister all while in the clown costume he had that year. His mother found out about this after entering her home after Michael was found sitting on the porch and he was arrested that night for murder. After being arrested, he was silent during a mix of therapy and prison over a course that had lasted over 10 years. During this time, he had found his sanctuary, masks. With these he felt more confident and eventually broke out of prison gaining a new mask and thirst for blood upon his favorite night, Halloween.

The Eleventh Scariest Monster: Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, The Original Movie Poster 7. Jason Vorheese: Friday the 13th Who loves campfire stories? Not horror movie fans, but we got it anyways with the coming of a psycho who is silent as his own grave and wears the ever so iconic hockey mask. Jason tends to use the ever so favored machete in his gruesome killings, but will also use whatever his surroundings permit if need be. In his childhood, Jason could never swim. Whenever he tried he, kept repeating “Help!” over and over again, but was not heard by the camp counselors who were making out. Jason eventually drowned and seemed to grow up under the water, only to wake up from the lake every year to slaughter all the people who are counselors of the camp at the time. He is the camps fabled death curse. 6. Freddy Krueger: a Nightmare on Elm Street How do you stop a man that kills people in their own dreams? The answer is quite simple. You can’t. When he was still alive Kruger had done terrible things to the children that went to a preschool that he worked at.The parents of the children found out what Krueger had done and chased him into a warehouse, trapped him and lit the building on fire. However, before he died he

made a had vowed vengeance upon the very families that had burned him alive. As his final moments were upon him, three dream demons appeared to him. They offered him the ability to gain revengance in return for his soul. After gaining power from dream demons, he begun killing anybody who lived in his old house on Elm Street along with anybody affiliated with any of the inhabitants. Freddy, however, is the only creature to incorporate humor into several kills. Survivors claim that if you die in your dreams that you die in real life. Just keep away from the claws; and your death may be less painful. 5. The Werewolf: My Life as a Teenage werewolf I feel quite certain we have all heard of this one. However, this creature is also known as a Lycanthrope which translates from Latin to man wolf. This beast is said to be human by day, but transform as soon as the moon shines its light onto the earth. I will not go too far into detail about this one due to how we all know about this one already. The werewolf was known for attacking animals and other people along with making other people werewolves due to the effect of their bite. 4. Pazuzu: the Exorcist We knew that a demon had to be on this list, the problem

was trying to decide which one to use. We eventually chose a classic. Plus, this demon claims to be powerful enough to pass as the devil in the presence of a priest. Pazuzu actually originated in Babylonian and Assyrian folklore as a wind demon. However, in the exorcist we never actually see his true form. He is known in this film as the one that made the child float and had her head twist around 360 degrees. As he is a powerful demon, we could never really forget him. 3. The Mummy: The Mummy I love Egypt. So that means that, whenever I hear about an Egyptian monster, it may as well be on this list. Ancient Egyptians believed that their leaders, the Pharaohs, were gods and believed that they would take belongings with them into the afterlife. However, in order to stop grave robbers, the Egyptians would place booby traps in the infamous “Pharaoh’s Curse,” If you disturb to body of the mummy or take any of its treasure, then the mummy will rise from the dead to kill you. That ought to stop you from eying those pyramids. 2. Frankenstein’s Monster: Frankenstein I would just like to start by saying that the monster’s name was not Frankenstein.

That name belonged to the mad scientist that had made him. The monster was made out of a collection of body parts along with a violent brain and is powered by lightning. Eventually, the monster had killed people and gained a fear of fire. To this day, nobody is sure what had happened to the powerful monster created by Dr. Frankenstein. 1. Dracula: Dracula I once heard that you cannot hate on the classics. That is true in the case of “The Prince of Darkness.” Count Vlad Tepes Dracula was the Lord of Vampires before they decided to make vampires all sparkly. Dracula translate from Romanian into “Son of Dracul.” Dracul was the name of Dracula’s father which translated into “Dragon” or “Devil.” This vampire set the precedent for his entire race’s powers for example, the ability to drink blood. However, Dracula also had several weaknesses such as the Cross, Garlic, Deadman's blood, Holy Water, the sun, and a wooden stake to the heart. There you have it folks: the list of our top ten movie monsters. Now, ask yourself, is it truly only in the movies? Enjoy your Halloween people and see you around Thanksgiving.

All Hallows Eve: A Pagan/Roman/Celtic Tradition Travis Nelson Donovan Hackett Staff Writer

without a resting place.

Halloween is coming up, but how many people know about the history of the ancient holiday. How much do people know about the traditions? In this article we will be discussing traditions and history about Halloween History Halloween was originally called “All Hallows Eve” and started out as a pagan holiday. Then it was adopted by the celtics. Ancient Celts had believed that on this day the dead shall roam the earth to haunt the living. Though today, many kids use it as an excuse to get free candy during the night of October 31st. The listed traditions will be described and discussed. The Jack-o-Lantern Jack-o-lanterns go with Halloween like peanut butter goes with jelly. Surprisingly, the pumpkins with the crooked

smiles are not the first form of the friar’s lanterns. In fact, turnips, rutabagas, gourds, potatoes and beets all were used before the holiday came to America. The story behind the spooky veggie comes from the story of Stingy Jack. Jack was a miserable trickster who tricked everyone around him.

One day, he talked the very Devil into climbing a tree, and then trapped him using crosses. To free himself, the Devil promised not to claim the cruel charlatan’s soul upon death. When the man died, he was rejected from heaven due to making everyone miserable, as well as hell due to the Devil’s promise. Thus, he wanders,

Trick-or-treating Trick-or-treating is defined by the almighty Webster Dictionary as “a custom on Halloween in which children knock on people's doors and say “trick or treat” when the doors are opened to ask for candy”, but it’s so much more. The practice was born in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when Celts believed that spirits of the dead returned to Earth. Obviously, being Celts, their reaction is to burn things in bonfires and beg for homage, sometimes in costume. The costumes were used as disguises to make the ghosts and demons walking around in the night believe that they were spirits themselves.
