INTRODUCTION
My name is Chloe Fong and this portfolio is a demonstration of the CAD work I have done over my first year at the University of Brighton . It consists of CAD models of some of the final products as well as initial development ideas to the three projects:Things, Light and Shade, and Blue Skies . The models are made of Solidworks and Rhinoceros 5.0, rendered on Keyshot. All designs are my own except for a model of Kay Aplin’s tile and a Amazon Kindle USB charger, where design rights and/or trademarks belong to their respective companies/persons.

THINGS
This project consisted of three elements: Form, Surface and Proportion We explored asthetics of objects, there was no requirement for fuction. Form was to design an object that would fit the dimensions of a 45x45x60 cuboid , touching all six faces. The design had to incorporate a square, an elipse, a triange and a circle. Surface was tile design emphasis on tesselations if the pattern was repeated. We were to asked to keep all but one the dimensions of a given object and change only one proportion for the proportion task.
Form Twist This first idea consists of the lofts of the four specifed shapes. Ideally it would be made of transparent plastic, but as the brief specified MDF , this idea was not taken forward. Made on Solidworks.
Form Spear A minimalistic approach was taken for this design , the four shapes are embedded in the cross sections and the base of the model. Made on Solidworks
The final concept was inspired by one of the squiggly lines that sometim

Surface Ray This design is inspired by sunrays. It was not chosen due to brittleness of plaster of paris as well as the draft angles needed for the vacuum forming process. Made on Solidworks.
Surface Flower This design is inspired the rotational symmertry of flower petals. The tile looks better as a stand alone statement, but does not have a special effect when put together Made on Solidworks.
Exploring the effect between mathematics and art, these tiles were create layered to create a 3D effect, and the inner portion has a rough sandy tex

Proportion Original USB We were asked to change the proportion of an everyday object. USB is increasing becoming an “everyday object as it is the standard for chargers, external storage and data transfer. Made on Solidworks
Proportion Golden Ratio The golden ratio is deemed to be the most aesthetically pleasing, I made a CAD model of a USB with golden proportions to see if this was true . It looked very simular to the original model . Made on Solidworks.
As the golden ratio model did not look that different from the original, I tional, this design become more of a statement piece

decided to experiment with drastic change . As it did not have to be funce than the other initial ideas. It’s form is unusual stands out from the rest. Made on Solidworks
Kay Aplin
Kay Aplin is a Brighton based Scottish tile designer. She specialises in ceramic tiles for outdoor spaces and has been commisioned to do pieces ranging from playground installations to gifts for the royal wedding. All the tiles she produces are handmade in her studio.
As the tiles are all handmade my Kay, this CAD model cannot capture the rustic feel of the original . Made on Solidworks, then exported to Rhino for refinements
Light And Shade
Light and shade was a group project done between myself and Claire Ellison. The brief was to design a light paying particular attention of mood lightingand sustainably. The Client was an online company who required the light to be flatpack into an A4 envelope for easy shipping.
The Cube Skeleton This concept was inspired by molecular structral models used for education . The tubes would have LEDs within it and the balls at the end would connect the light together to create cubes. All the element could be dissasembled and packed within an envelope to be shipped, the balls would also come in a variety of colour. Made on Solidworks.
Technology has evolved to overcome the obstacle of physical distan many have the luxury of truly relaxing and forgetting about work. Enligh ation with indirect lighting and warm hue of the petals. When petals are fully extended, the candle holder slips easily into an hten is also very light in weight which would not incur much shipping cost. Made on Solidworks.
Blue Skies
Blue skies was an open project which we could find our own briefs for. It focuses on the future of design and how products would look in then. By looking at current trends, we were to design , without limitations of current technology, a product that would be fit for the future. Perfume Bottles for lartisan Parfumeur. L’artisan Parfumeur is a botique perfumery in Paris. They wanted designs for a new range of fragrances inspired by emotions. In the future, packaging should not only be for one of the five senses, but should incorprate all the senses.
The bottles for the company at the moment are just glass pentagonal prisms. The idea is to engage the users visual senses as well as olfactory senses. The following concept objectifies the essence of each scent and encases it into a bottle, reponding to their key word “bottled emotions.

“Passion and Desire. Sex and lust. Raw and Physical
Using the words given and their connotations, the object that came to mind was fire: dangerous yet enticing. Made on Rhino.
Electric
“Excitement and fear. Adrenaline, exhilaration and thrill
Electricity was one of the objects that came up many times in a survery where subjects were asked to draw out this emotion. Made on Rhino.
Purity
“Perfect sublime love. An interior emotion
A young green shoot symbolising innocience and purity, as well as naive love. Made on Rhino.

“Elegant yet dignified. Story yet still
Black was chosen to contrast the diamond cut yet to suggest subtilepower and beauty. Made on Rhino.
