GSU 1993, 1998 - Performing Arts
Roshanda Demetric Spears is an award-winning dancer. At age 5, Spears began learning West African, tap, jazz, ballet and modern dance, which have shaped her dance style and choreography. At GSU, Spears earned a bachelor’s degree in Mass Communication/Broadcasting in 1993, then master’s degrees in liberal Arts in 1998 and mass communication in 2001. She was a member of the Orchesis Dance Company, for which she later became the Assistant Director. Spears has performed in various venues and for commercials, plays, musicals and movies. Spears is a dance instructor/choreographer at Shreveport Little Theatre, resident choreographer for Mahogany Ensemble Theatre, and tap dance instructor/ choreographer for Stage Center, and other community venues and churches. She is also pursuing a master’s degree in Christian Counseling at Greenwood Acres Christian College and School of Ministry. Spears sits on a number of Arts affiliated boards and organizations. A Northwest Louisiana Roster Artist, Spears has received awards on the state and regional level including a two SRAC Artist Fellowship in dance and was recognized for Outstanding Choreography and Excellence 6 H O M E CO M I N G 2 02 0 A RT I ST S R E U N I O N
in Choreography for the 2011 Louisiana and Regional American Association of Community Theatres (AACT) Festival. Spears is the founding executive director of Shufflin’ Along, LLC and the Shufflin’ Along Foundation and Performing Arts Scholarship Fund. Roshanda Spears presented a 12 session (6-week) WORKSHOP SERIES that studied the history and professional contributions of the great Performers that were “born” from the GSU / SUSLA Performing Arts Department. Topics and Artists included Theatre, Storytelling, Dance, and Music. At the same time, she taught and equipped viewers to develop a professional Performing Arts Portfolio complete with a head shot, resume, Artist statement, and samples of work.
