“It is this community spirit that makes me proud to be a clubbie. Visiting the regions of Corrigin, Hyden, Esperance and Albany during January to meet with local clubs has reinforced for me the strength of our industry in the people who work and volunteer to make our communities a better place.”
A New Year’s message from Clubs WA CEO
Karen Giles
The best news I have heard this month has been that two of our member clubs have survived horrific bush fires. Firstly, the team at Scaddan Country Club sustained fire damage in the November 2015 bush fire yet has managed to remain operational. At the time of print the club is still waiting on fixing electrical wiring and rebuilding the section of the club that took some damage but their spirit remains high. And miraculously, the fire that engulfed Yarloop did not affect the local, historic Yarloop Bowling Club, the team of which has opened up to the community as they all come to terms with the devastating damage surrounding them. Our thoughts continue to be with the Yarloop community and our thanks to the numerous clubs that have donated to the appeals for those who have suffered. It is this community spirit that makes me proud to be a clubbie. Visiting the regions of Corrigin, Hyden, Esperance and Albany during January to meet with local clubs has reinforced for me the strength of our industry in the people who work and volunteer to make our communities a better place.
I encourage you to take a photo of your club and share it on our page too! And I also encourage your club to join us in our Awards for Excellence program. This is the only event that celebrates the work that our clubs do in the community and nominating is a rewarding process for all involved in your club. Consider for example your volunteer, front of stage, receiving a framed certificate for all their efforts, in front of their peers. There are a number of categories to suit your club and this year, to celebrate our 10th anniversary, we have introduced a new category entitled the ‘Inspiration’ award, for the person or persons who have inspired your club. Both the club and their ‘inspiration’ will be awarded at our Awards ceremony in June. For more information please contact our 2016 Awards Coordinator, Sandra Azavedo on 1300 640 616 or email events@clubswa.com.au. Best wishes, Karen

I also got a little snap-happy, taking shots of some of the clubs we passed on our travels, which I will be sharing on our Facebook page.

Good Governance training
GOOD GOVERNANCE
Are you really as qualified as you should be? This article is for: Club Managers | Committee Members By engaging in effective corporate governance, management committees help ensure the strategic long-term financial viability of their club. Corporate governance generally refers to the way an organisation is managed. The Australian Standard (AS 8000) defines corporate governance as: “the processes by which organisations are directed, controlled and held to account. It encompasses authority, accountability, stewardship, leadership, direction and control exercised in the organisation.”
|
Clubs WA Service Bulletin
The Clubs WA Good Governance training course has been developed to assist the Management Committee and key personnel of licensed clubs within Western Australia in the governance of their clubs, and highlights management under both the Associations Incorporation Act 1987 and the Liquor Control Act 1988. It is recommended that the training course MLPLCA401 Management of Licensed Premises be undertaken by your Club Manager.
6
As your club’s manager or a member of the committee, you should know the most important elements of governance: 1. Governance is not about running the day-to-day operation of the club. 2. A Management Committee member must exercise care, skill and diligence when making decisions. 3. The importance of financial performance of the club. 4. Managing conflicts of interest. 5. Obligations of a Management Committee member.
Can you confidently answer ALL of the questions below? DO YOU KNOW: The Responsibilities, authorisations and powers that exist under the Liquor Control Act? Your Club’s obligations under the Liquor Control Act? What documents must be displayed at your Club under the Liquor Control Act. The roles and responsibilities of a Management Committee Member? How to read and understand the Finance Report? How to manage a meeting? How to take minutes of a meeting? What the Associations Incorporation Act 1987 (WA) is and how it affects you? Your Club obligations under the Associations Incorporation Act 1987 (WA)? Your Club Constitution and what it covers? How to update your Club Constitution? What records must be kept by your Club? What the Liquor Control Act is and how it affects your Club? What Extended Trading Permits are available under the Liquor Control Act?
With changes to the Associations Act taking effect in July 2016, good clear governance is even more vital to Club Managers and Committee members.
In return, by becoming a committee member they agree to act in the best interests of the association and are accountable for the decisions they make. Just like they have to comply with the law as a private Penalties under the new Act citizen, committee members also have to comply There is a mistaken view that people who volunteer with the law in relation to incorporated associations. their time in not-for-profit community organisations do not have to comply with any legal duties because The duties in the new law set the basic standards of they are ‘volunteering’. acceptable conduct. If you couldn’t answer all of the ‘Do You Know’ questions, Clubs WA highly recommends you complete our online Good Governance training course. As a Committee member or Club Manager it is your duty to implement good governance within your club to ensure its financial viability. We want you to have full confidence in your role and for this reason we have developed a Good Governance training course, tailored specifically for Western Australia’s club industry. Give your New Year resolutions a kick start Written by Club Plus
Now that the New Year has started, you’ve probably made a long list of goals and resolutions you’d like to achieve for 2016. Like most people, resolutions relating to health and finances are probably top of your list. We believe that having a realistic financial action plan in place may significantly assist with improving your emotional well-being ─ which may directly affect the status of your health. But how do you avoid procrastinating and start the process of achieving your resolutions without being distracted by competing financial obligations?
Identify spending habits and prioritise financial commitments The first step in creating a realistic action plan is to pin point exactly where you spend your money and whether you can afford to reduce any unnecessary expenses. Let’s face it; most of us adjust our spending patterns to an expenditure level that is just below our earnings.
|
Clubs WA Service Bulletin
While you may need to spend or borrow more to fulfil a New Year resolution, if you already have a high level of debt, perhaps your first priority is to look at more effective ways at reducing your overall financial commitments. There would be no point in stretching your finances even more if you can’t afford to service your current debt repayments.
8
The MoneySmart website has some useful information about how you can assess your net worth and manage your debts. For information, go to www.moneysmart.gov.au/ managing-your-money/managing-debts or contact us on 1800 680 627.
Cover for the unexpected
The next step in creating a realistic action plan is to make sure your everyday needs will be taken care of if something unexpected happens. Most people have insurance cover for their car, their house and even their pet, but forget to insure themselves or the main bread winner of their household. If you’re a member of Club Plus Super, you will most likely have a minimum level of life and disability insurance. Broadly, these insurance benefits include: Life cover: a lump sum benefit is paid to your nominated beneficiaries in the event of your death. Total and permanent disability cover: a lump sum benefit is paid to you if you are permanently disabled or unlikely to return to work. Income protection: provides you with a monthly income replacement benefit for up to two years, after 21 days waiting period. It is important to take some time to know what you’re actually covered for and whether you have the right level of cover. If you’re unsure, call us or check your last annual statement.
Review your changing requirements
When you first enter the workforce and have minimal debts, your financial obligations are relatively insignificant and your ability to maintain your lifestyle is fairly easy. Once you buy a house or start longer term personal arrangements, your lifestyle may become more difficult to maintain. Your financial commitments may become potentially even more complicated if an adverse life event occurs.
Here’s a basic checklist of expenses you will need to consider if you are unable to work: • Rent or mortgage repayments • Car expenses (petrol, maintenance, insurance) • Loans or credit card repayments • School or education expenses • Other living expenses (groceries, utilities, travel)
The key component in setting realistic goals and seeing them through is to prepare yourself by finding out about your options. This includes knowing what you want to achieve and what you need to do to in order to succeed. For the best outcome, talk to people you can trust to keep you focused on achieving your end goals. If you need assistance with your super, please don’t hesitate to call our member services team on 1800 680 627.

Melville Bowling Club Written by Fiona Hickey
Both the trapeze club and Melville Bowling Club have had an effect on each other. Regulars at the Bowling Club are intrigued with trapeze and watching what’s going on and many people who were originally visiting the club for the trapeze now have a huge interest in bowls. Even the young ladies who work at Melville Bowling gave it a try, with some successfully completing the fly on their first attempt.
Melville Bowling are delighted to welcome Cirque Espace to Perth and anyone that fancies giving it a go! Ocean Reef Sea Sports Club Written by Fiona Hickey
Almost 32 years ago, the Ocean Reef Sea Sports Club witnessed something that is still talked about in awe to this day. Ray Cockman, a regular at the club, arrived back to shore after a hard day on the sea, with his proudest catch - a 198.4kg marlin. Last month, Steve Snell and the team at the Ocean Reef Sea Sports Club welcomed Ray back to the club with open arms to commemorate the huge catch with a replica of the marlin hanging proud on the wall of the Club hall. Ray retold his adventure to old friends and staff of the club who were excited to hear his story.

Steve plans to make the club a known destination for beautiful weddings, memorable functions and important conferences. Steve points out how much he values the club’s members and wants to make the club a great place for new and current members.
