This report will be my last Service Bulletin entry as the Clubs WA Executive Director in that I will officially retire on September 26, 2014 after announcing that intent at the 2014 Awards for Excellence in April. The truly humbling experience of having 450 fellow clubbies standing as one in a spontaneous appreciation of my contribution for your cause will be amongst the fondest memories of my 14 year service to the WA club sector. Time and place is everything in business as it is in life and the Clubs WA business you see today is vastly different from what is was in 2000. From humble beginnings came opportunities and they came in the form of a training option for our club managers, then later with WA Responsible Service of Alcohol which then led to developing online courses right around Australia. The day I spent answering questions that I had no answers to in a 2002 audit by the Training Accreditation Council of WA to officially be recognised as a Registered Training Organisation was the most stressful, soul destroying, heart wrenching day of my total work life and I still vividly remember the feeling of doom and gloom plus hopelessness at what transpired. The very next day myself and our other employee, 18-year-old junior receptionist Linda Admiraal (she led) determined that we would challenge the hurdles placed in front of our business and head towards building an income stream that would ensure no such occurrence would ever confront Clubs WA again. We fought to secure our status as an RTO and then set about developing new and innovative products and came up with the use of CD-ROMs as a delivery tool servicing hospitality facilities scattered throughout the whole of Western Australia. By 2010 we had built and paid for our headquarters, fitted the facility with the very best of equipment and we finally had a place to call home. By this time we had instigated many improvements to what we could physically provide for our growing membership, along with creating our Awards for Excellence program plus we got very serious about our next venture; online training. These were glory days and we had positioned ourselves to be in the right place at the right time but the big challenges still lay ahead, we still had to better sell the values of the club sector and for this we came armed with the 2009 Socio Economic Impact Study on the role and value of the club sector to the WA community. Super encouraging for me and I suspect our membership was the manner in which the staff that have joined our team over the years have all shown true regard for who we work for and have embraced the wonderful qualities of the magnificent 24,500 volunteers that are the heartbeat of the club movement, thank you all for providing that inspiration. Today’s Clubs WA team is small but ambitious, totally committed to the task at hand and to a person, totally dedicated to the betterment of the club sector, I have no doubt your future is secure in the hands of these outstanding professionals. As the paid servant of an association whose actions affect more than 320,000 club members, I have had the role to deliver policy setting created by a committee, board of management or in our case a State Council. I have chased and pushed to achieve most of those settings but have a very acute understanding that without these brave and industry wise leaders of our movement, nothing could have changed. Back to where I started, I feel really privileged at being in the right place at the right time and that your State Council chose me as your Executive Director and that I have had an opportunity to meet and work with so many community leaders. Can I close off as I did to all assembled at the Awards for Excellence night by thanking each and every person in Clubland for the courtesies and support that have been offered to myself and my wife Jenny during my 14 years passing through the prized piece of turf that is your club. Kindest regards, Peter Seaman

So long, farewell, auf wiedersehen, goodbye WALLY MAKER CLUBS WA PRESIDENT

In the most sincerest way I would like to wish you the absolute best for the future Peter. My hope is that now you won’t be at work you can spend your days playing golf and utilising the A-class skills and tricks you have learnt through my outstanding golfing tutelage throughout the many years. I have no doubt that your game will start to improve almost straight away. But in all seriousness, the far too many stories of the antics we have participated in over the years will never fit into this publication (and a few I would like to keep out of the public eye), so I will just leave it at this: it has been an absolute pleasure working with you throughout this roller coaster adventure we call the club industry. I can safely say that the changes you have fought so hard for over the past 14 years have changed the way our industry operates in WA, - for the better. This industry is going to miss you terribly and I wish you all the best for your future endeavors. KEITH BRANSBY CLUBS WA METRO VICE PRESIDENT

Connecting you to high-profile athletes CHRISTINA NG MARKETING ASSISTANT

PickStar (www.pickstar.com.au) is an online platform which looks to provide Australians with greater access to their sporting stars, while at the same time delivering the platform for Australian athletes to engage and connect with the public in ways that suit their abilities, interests and schedules. The company also creates the opportunity for an athlete to use their profile to inspire and engage others, while also enabling organisations, individuals, clubs and schools to create interest and excitement in their event. Co-founded by AFL star, James Begley (of the St Kilda Saints and Adelaide Crows) and Fremantle Dockers legend, Matthew Pavlich (current captain of the squad for the past eight seasons), PickStar was conceived after Begley witnessed an increasing desire for businesses to engage with sports stars, and Pavlich became aware of the large number of athletes who wished to engage with these businesses for commercial opportunities whilst still actively participating in their chosen sports. Thus, PickStar was born in order to bridge that gap and make it possible for everyone to “reach the stars”. Whether your club budget is as small as $100, or as large as a corporate sponsorship worth thousands, PickStar allows you to pitch your opportunity directly to their list of elite athletes both past and present across a range of sporting codes – AFL, Cricket, NBL, NRL, ABL,

Netball, Super Rugby, Olympic and Paralympic!

Clubs WA are thrilled to be able to announce PickStar as a Bronze Corporate Partner and look forward to working with such a great team of people in what is sure to be a fun and enjoyable partnership!

Highlighting WA Junior programs CHRISTINA NG MARKETING ASSISTANT

With social media becoming an increasingly powerful business tool to help expose and promote local organisations and events to the greater community, Clubs WA are expanding its services to help assist and enable its members to take advantage of this modern-day trend.

Softball WA’s Operations Manager, Brittany Rumfelt, acknowledges the positive, long-term effects group activity can have for young players, stating that being a part of any team sport gives basis for [children to learn] discipline, keep active and learn life skills that apply even outside of sport’.

Alongside the launch of our ‘Junior Rising Stars’ campaign last month (visit our Facebook page for more detail), Clubs WA is opening its media channels to clubs around the State who have dedicated programs and activities to help our young clubbies stay active, have fun and give them a strong foundation for good mental health and wellbeing. With access to over 320,000 active club members and thousands of community group leaders, licensed club representatives and corporate sponsors both locally and interstate, Clubs WA are able to expose your club’s profile to key personnel and help provide greater awareness of your club’s Junior Program to both benefit and entice potential members and sponsors. September’s Junior Program focus is on Softball WA. Introduced to our nation in 1939, softball first began in Australia when the then Director of Physical Education in NSW, Gordon Young, began promoting the game in schools and colleges. Since then, softball in Australia has continued to catch on, with over 25,000 individual members currently involved in playing, coaching, officiating and supporting the sport in our country. Of that number, an estimated 105 softball Associations and 500 clubs are currently signed up to the Softball Australia network.

Amongst the numerous programs organised by Softball WA, those designed specifically for Juniors include: Softball Batter Up’ School Holiday Camps – for boys and girls under 15 years of age. Hosted over each week of the school holidays, Rumfelt notes that the program is thoughtfully designed across two venues to cater for players located either north or south of the river. “The camps run from Mondays to Fridays, 9am to 3pm, and we spend one week up north near our club base in Mirrabooka, and then another south of the river to make it more convenient for those in that area”. And what exactly do kids get up to at these camps to help them stay mentally healthy? “Our camps help kids keep active and teaches them how to live a healthy lifestyle through the various activities we run”, states Rumfelt. These activities include fundamental drills on throwing, fielding, hitting and base running, “having a go” in game situations and scratch matches and playing tips from local softball stars and coaches. Notable stars include local junior softball alumni, Leigh Godfrey and Chelsea Forkin who were both picked to play for Australia’s 2014 Women’s Softball Team, the Aussie Spirit. From all Clubs WA staff and affiliate members, we say congratulations to the players and coaching staff of the Aussie Spirit on your amazing efforts and

The performance emulates that of the 2012 ISF Women’s World Championship where Australia finished third behind Japan and the USA, the same two teams to play for the gold and silver medals at this Championship. To their credit, the Spirit played as hard as they could, but clearly a gruelling schedule from three games played the previous day, including a 1.30am finish, took its toll. Japan has subsequently regained their title of World Champion with victory over the USA, 4-1. Clubs WA Service Bulletin
