A Message From Club WA CEO
Karen Giles
Dear Member, With Easter celebrations now complete, school holidays around the corner and ANZAC Day celebrations coming up, it never ceases to amaze me that our clubs really are at the heart of the community.
Attending the Clubs WA workshops and regional meetings provides you with an opportunity to discuss ideas with other clubs, and compare cost and time effective strategies for driving membership.
Our club industry continues to grow, with more clubs introducing innovative programs to help increase juniors, family membership, and programs encouraging people to try out a new sport in the safety of our club environment.
It has been great seeing so many clubs attending our regional meetings and many thanks to all the clubs that were able to make it to our Central Country Zone meeting at the Narrogin Club. It was a very productive meeting, being able to compare ideas as well as discuss local issues regarding compliance in the region.
However, despite these new ideas and fantastic new programs, our member clubs continue to report that increasing membership is becoming harder each year, as locals start to favour staying at home for a drink on the couch instead of socialising with their mates and getting in some exercise at the same time. This trend is slowly starting to impact the role of clubs in the community. As you are no doubt aware, it is imperative that your club starts planning today for your future direction. Areas that were once considered not as important, such as governance, digital marketing and customer service, will soon be what will separate our successful clubs from those who refuse to move with the times. So how do you get your club to move forward?
We understand that every region has different needs and that is why this month Clubs WA heads to Moora, Merredin and Kalgoorlie, to discuss local issues and continue tailored discussions on the future of our industry. As I end my editorial this month, I regret to inform you that our much loved regional State Councillor, Max McDonald, passed away on the 21st March. Max was on our State Council for 15 years and was instrumental in the development of our marketing programs. He will be sorely missed by the Ledge Point community, Clubs WA State Councillors and staff, and our thoughts go out to Max’s wife Annette and their family.
Just like eating an elephant, it will only happen one bite at a time. Clubs WA can provide you with services to ensure the success of your club, and I encourage you to contact us regarding your club’s specific needs.
Vale Max McDonald

Treasurers - Are You Being Cheated On? In early March, Clubs WA held an informative workshop for Club Treasurers, Secretaries and Bookkeepers, in partnership with our Industry Supporter, Natalie Mills from Mills & Associates. We understand that it was not possible for all Clubbies to attend this workshop due to time and travel restraints. For this reason, the workshop was professionally filmed and is currently being edited, ready to share with those who could not attend. This was a fantastic workshop, and every attendee left positive feedback about the content and our presenter Natalie Mills. Topics covered: • Common types of not-for-profit fraud • How to identify the first warnings of fraud • Conflicts of interest • Best reporting practice • Preventative safeguards you can implement • Western Australian club examples and case studies • The roles and responsibilities of Club Treasurers and Bookkeepers Testimonials from the workshop: “Very constructive and informative. Great to network with others and get new ideas.” - Wayne Barrett (Club Director), Thornlie Football & Sports Club “Very informative – especially regarding the conflict of interest definitions and the Audit process.” - Hannah Webster (Treasurer), Gosnells Bowling Club “Very good workshop. Gives me a lot to think about as a future Treasurer.” - Neil Mason (Treasurer), The Cruising Yacht Club of WA As Clubs WA has heavily subsidised the cost of the professional videographer, and the video will be available to members for just $30. As soon as the video is ready to be accessed an alert will be sent out via our weekly E-News updates. If you would like more information about the content of this video or how to access it, please contact Holly Hazel on 1300 640 616 or marketing@clubswa.com.au.

APPROVED MANAGER ID CARDS
CARDS WILL START TO EXPIRE FROM JUNE 2016
In 2011 the Licensing Authority introduced the Approved Manager Identification Cards which were granted for a period of five years. As a result cards will start to expire from June 2016. The Department of Racing, Gaming & Liquor (DRGL) will carry out the approved manager card renewal process in stages: •
•
An email from DRGL will be sent four months prior to card expiry requesting those managers whose details have changed to update their information via their online account (Note: those managers whose cards expire in June should have already received their emails); and Approximately three months before a card’s expiry date, a DRGL notice will be sent to the card holder requesting they complete the approved manager renewal process via their online account. Once logged into their account, managers will be required to respond to a series of questions relating to their card renewal; they will also have access to a comprehensive lodgement guide.
After the renewal process has been completed, the card will be valid for five years from the original expiry date. It is important to note that only those managers who have received a renewal reminder will be able to undertake the renewal process as those outside the 90-day expiry period will not have had a renewal option added to their account. Failure to renew an identification card before the expiry date will result in the manager no longer being able to work as an approved manager in Western Australia. A current Police Clearance will also be required. Licensees are reminded to check the approved manager credentials of their staff as it their responsibility to ensure they have an approved manager on the premises at any time that the business is being conducted. Failure to do so may result in a maximum penalty of $10,000. If you don’t receive an email, please ring DRGL on 1300 634 541 to confirm they have your most upto-date details. 7
PERTH FOOTBALL CLUB Perth Demons Football Club Bar and Functions Manager, Ryan Keatley, participated in the World’s Greatest Shave last month, raising more than $6,000 for the Leukaemia Foundation. Hundreds of supporters attended a scratch match between the Perth and South Fremantle WAFL clubs at Lathlain Park on March 12 th where Ryan had his trademark dreadlocks cut off. “They were a huge part of my identity, no one at the club really knew me without them,” Ryan said. After growing his dreadlocks for 6 years, Ryan was inspired to participate in the World’s Greatest Shave by a close family member’s battle with leukaemia, and promised he would do it for her. Sadly, she passed away just two weeks before the big day and was unable to be there to see Ryan follow through with his promise. “Family is a big part of who I am, so that’s why I did it,” he said. However, Ryan is “absolutely ecstatic” with the success of the event, so far raising $6,550.30 - an impressive $1,500 more than his initial goal.
The Demons have plans to add the event to their annual calendar and to make it “bigger and better” each year.
DID YOU KNOW? •
More than 12,000 Australians will develop leukaemia, lymphoma or myeloma this year – or 34 people every day.
•
Blood cancer claims the lives of more Australians than breast cancer and melanoma.
•
Leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma are types of blood cancer. They can develop in anyone, at any time at any age.
•
Money raised from World’s Greatest Shave funds blood cancer research and free support through the Leukaemia Foundation.
•
The Leukaemia Foundation is the only Australia-wide charity dedicated to the care and cure of people with leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma and related blood disorders.
•
That’s why so many people are as passionate as us about this campaign... and why your support is so vital.
Ryan already has some players in mind for next year. “We’ll be getting the players involved next year. We’ve got three with dreads so I’ve told them they’re next,” he said. Every March the Leukaemia Foundation encourages people to shave, colour or wax their hair as a part of the World’s Greatest Shave fundraising project. Participants are sponsored through donations for their courage and selflessness with more than 150,000 people estimated to participate each year. The funds raised are put towards research for a more effective treatment for blood cancer as well as establishing further support systems for the families of those effected by leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma. The Leukaemia Foundation offer accommodation, transportation, education and emotional support to those suffering with blood cancer and their families. There’s still time to sign up for this year, and you can find out how by visiting the World’s Greatest Shave website at www.worldsgreatestshave.com/signup.

BEER AND FOOD FINDING THE PERFECT MATCH Good food matched with the right beverage in the company of friends and family is one of life’s greatest pleasures. Beer and cider are fantastic accompaniments to all sorts of food, and offer a huge array of choice when selecting the perfect food pairing. In fact, beer can be more versatile for matching with food than wine. Carlton & United Breweries (CUB) Chief Brewer, Jaideep Chandrasekharan, says that beer and food matching is a great chance to engage with customers in your venues. “We’re really excited about the “foodie” trend, and it’s great to see consumers beginning to embrace beer and cider at the dinner table. Beer and food matching is underrated and offers the opportunity for venues to drive incremental sales,” he said. When pairing beer and cider with food, one of the most important considerations is the intensity of both the beverage and the food. As with any food and beverage partnership, neither the beer nor the food should overpower the other. The beer should either complement the dish, matching strength for
strength; contrast the food, allowing opposites to attract; or provide a cleansing role, cutting through a strong flavour or texture within the dish so that you’re refreshed for the next course. CUB’s wide portfolio means that there is a beer or cider available to suit a huge variety of occasions and dishes. When looking for beers that complement food, think about the delicacy of the dish. Delicate foods call for delicate beers, while strong flavours work best with stronger bodied beers. A classic lager such as Carlton Draught with good malt character and a smooth full-bodied flavour is an ideal match for a simple chargrilled steak. Likewise, try the flavoursome Lazy Yak with a tasty pepperoni pizza or some spicy chicken wings. On the other hand, the floral and herbal aroma balanced with the light style of Pure Blonde Ultra Low Carb pairs well with seafood starters such as Thai fish cakes or marinated prawns. Another option is to look for common elements or flavours. Bulmer’s Original clean apple cider is an ideal partner for a pulled pork slider – apple and pork has always been a match made in heaven.
Alternatively, if looking to use beer to cleanse, it’s Try it with some tacos or Spanish tapas – the lime citrus best to find an element of the beer that can play a notes will contrast to the spicy nature of the food and the crisp, refreshing nature of the beer will cleanse the role in the experience. palate from the richness of these two cuisines. TAKE ACTION
ON ELECTRICITY COSTS!
Electricity is a commodity these days and no longer restricted by government controlled pricing. Several retailers compete for business in Western Australia and there can be substantial shifts in pricing over a few weeks. However these variations can make buying opportunities and by timing the market carefully it is possible to make major savings, in comparison to the large number of businesses who leave electricity contracting until the last minute and as a consequence don’t have enough time to choose the most economical retailer. The good news at time of writing is, electricity prices in WA are the lowest for three years, but they could change at any time. Now is a good time to lock in lower pricing and your new contract will be a positive help in containing your operating costs. Recently a large hotel in Perth went out to tender and a saving of around $75,000 is estimated, over 10% of its total electricity cost.
Help is at hand to make savings It can be difficult for clubs to gauge when to enter into a new electricity contract. When you are busy with running day to day operations the electricity market will not be at the forefront of your mind and there may be temptation for the next contract to be put into the ‘too hard’ basket. Staying with your current retailer may not be the cheapest option, as they might be pricing in the knowledge that many businesses do not tender their requirements and any price premium may go unnoticed. However, help is at hand from a Clubs WA Silver Partner who can carry out a professional tender for you.
Be proactive to save on energy costs Trans Tasman Energy Group is a specialist energy consultancy, constantly monitoring the market for buying opportunities for Clubs WA members*. If your electricity contract is due to finish within the next 12 months, all you need to do is send a copy of your bill to TTEG. It will be checked for errors and savings will be calculated and they will include your club in a bulk tender to achieve the best price in the market. TTEG has saved WA businesses around $4 million since 2011, so help for your club is only an email or phone call away. If you would like to join other Club WA members in maximising your savings, TTEG will be happy to help.
*If you are currently being billed by Horizon, unfortunately this deal cannot apply to your club.

WA’s longest serving Yacht Club Manager, East Fremantle Yacht Club’s John Tissot, retired at the end of March. His contribution to the Club and industry as a whole, was recognised at a sundowner hosted by the Club. John was appointed the Club’s Manager in May 1988 and the 27 years he has worked at the club represent more than half of his total working life.
We welcome Mike Brunswick to the role. Mike has been in the Club industry for many years, and has previously been the General Manager at the Gosnells Golf Club and Melville Glades Golf Club.
