2014 was a rather exciting year for me as I organised my second Clubs WA Awards night which was one of our most successful thus far! Shortly after the awards night, I left Clubs WA to join my partner in Namibia for 6 months.

This last 6 months has taught me to embrace change, to accept my fears and not to let them prohibit me from trying new things. Life is one big adventure and we need to ensure that we are constantly challenging ourselves and trying something different, personally and professionally.

The second our plane landed on the tarmac, I was in awe of Namibia, its people and its diversity. We traveled extensively every weekend, we hiked every mountain, camped at over 15 different campsites, and made really great friends! The culture was embracing and the adventure became addictive. I have now returned to my role at Clubs WA as the Marketing and

In 2015, Clubs WA will rise to the challenge to bring you new events, new communication avenues and new industry related activities. So I encourage you all to try something new in 2015, meet with your local member, give social media a go, or nominate your Club for the 2015 Clubs WA Awards night? The team at Clubs WA are always here to provide you and your club with the support and tools to get you to the next level. Call us today on 1300 640 616 to see how we can help you! - Ashleigh Willer

Before we left I was apprehensive and nervous as to what to expect in a country I had never been to before. I was nervous about making friends, keeping myself busy, the culture and the adventure elements this country would introduce me to.

Thank you & good bye It has been an amazing past 8-months working with Clubs WA as the Marketing and Events Officer and it has been equally amazing working within this diverse club industry. Never have I come across an industry that is so passionate, so committed and yet can be so diverse. It has been rewarding and challenging using all of the theory I have learnt through my studies to help develop and expand Clubs WA’s communication with its valued members, industry representatives and supporters. Over the past few months, new Chief Executive Officer Karen Giles and myself have identified opportunities for development within Clubs WA and the club industry as a whole, which will aim to create awareness of clubs both at a membership level and at a Government level. One of the most exciting developments I saw was the introduction of club-focused training workshops and online course books. The Clubs WA Team worked tirelessly to launch the Good Governance training workshop at the October Annual General Meeting.

The training workshops received positive feedback and have put us on the path to develop even more workshops for all levels of clubs management and staff. Clubs WA will be rolling these out across the state over the next year. While my role as Clubs WA’s Marketing and Events Officer has finished, I enjoy working in the industry too much to leave completely. Based on feedback from clubs, Karen and myself are to developing a social media course to help clubs understand social media pages like Facebook and Twitter and how they can benefit your club. The course will look at how social media would be useful for your club and how to best use it to your advantage. I am excited to develop this social media course for you, especially because it means I can keep working within the club industry. A huge thank you goes out to all of the clubs and industry representatives I have worked with over the past months – there has never been a dull moment. -Holly Hazel

Beat the heat with cool drinks this summer MAJORS GROUP MANAGEMENT

Sporting clubs might offer isotonic drinks to help athletes replace water, electrolytes and energy after training or competition. Clubs that are fully licenced can also experiment alcoholic cocktails, while those that host mainly families with kids, might want to recommend natural fruit juice, a healthy and nourishing choice.

The Cold dispenser is exclusively distributed by Majors Group, official importer of Sencotel machines and many other Italian brands world-wide leaders in the production of ice-cream and frozen yogurt equipment and ingredients. If you would like more information about catering solutions for your business, please contact Majors Group on 1800 625 677 or by emailing info@majorsgroup.com.au. Majors Group is also on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.

Clubs WA Service Bulletin

The machine also features a special spigot for serving thick natural fruit juices, high in pulp content. This is a great solution for Clubs that can now offer every day different fresh drinks to patrons, adults and kids, who will be happy to taste new drinks and stay cool, at the same time.

Since the Sencotel Cold Drink comes in different sizes, it is also possible to have more than one dispenser in order to differentiate the offer. Available in three versions (12 / 20 / 25 litre capacity), the Cold Dispenser features removable polycarbonate bowls for easy cleaning. Beverages are stirred by means of a rotating paddle in order to avoid the formation of deposits.

|

Hot summer days call for refreshing drinks. A drink dispenser is a great solution for when the demand for cool drinks increases. The new Sencotel Cold Drink dispenser has been designed to refrigerate and dispense all kinds of beverage: cocktails, iced teas, lemonades, iced coffee and much more.

Women in sports clubs Due to the geographical location or what activities are offered, specific clubs might face significant challenges in attracting different segments of the community including age, gender or skill-level. Attracting and retaining women in clubs is an issue that some clubs struggle with, however there are ways to help overcome these issues. The most common motivations for women to participate in sport are fitness and fun, rather than competition or skill, according to the Women’s Sport and Fitness Foundation (WSFF). Generally, women want to join clubs that are open and welcoming, and that cater for a range of abilities and offer flexibility. Clubs have an important role in creating talent pathways and growing women’s participation in sport.

Current club members perceive their club as a place of many benefits including the opportunity to take up a favourite sport and the opportunity to improve and achieve goals. Flexibility | Both female members and non-members commonly mention the ‘rigidity’ of sports clubs. In an ideal world, women say their sports club would be more flexible and have more of an informal environment. Your club could try promoting an ethos of fitting around your member’s lives rather than demanding that women fit into a rigid club culture. Clubs could also trial an occasional ‘drop-in session’ where women could pop in and out at times that suited them. Flexibility is also associated with variety. Women commonly mention the appeal of variety, and say it would be appealing if clubs offered sessions accommodating varying abilities and levels. Your club could offer activities that could be made harder or easier depending on the ability of individuals. Formality | An ideal sports club would possess characteristics of both formal and informal elements. Clubs should be flexible, friendly, relaxed and pressure-free (informal charactersitics). However it should also be reliable and professional where activities run on schedule and there is clear leadership.

|

Skill level | One reason identified by the WSFF for women not joining a club was that they felt sports clubs were for people with more skill, ability and commitment than themselves. As a result, some women felt alienated. Try promoting your club as a The ideal club for women would include: place for all abilities and offer different levels from • Like-minded and friendly women beginners to advanced. • Flexible commitments • Different payment options WSFF’s research shows there is a perception that • Session flexibility and drop-in sessions sports clubs are dominated by men, and the statistics • Organised groups show that this perception is created more by people • Variety who are not members of a club than by those who • Qualified coaches and leaders are actually members.

Sports and social clubs play an integral role in reaching out to new and current members, as well as engaging the local community. Being a part of a club provides members with the opportunity to participate in social and competitive sports and to stay mentally and physically healthy.

How to perfect the media release Answer the five W questions What was the event or issue? Where did it happen? Who did it happen to? When did it happen? Why did it happen? Make it conversational – how would you explain the story to a friend? Tips for getting your media story heard • Get to know the media • Find out which is your local newspaper • Get to know the journalists who cover the sport and human-interest stories • Read the paper and see what stories they like talking about • Check their deadlines and requirements • Make your story appealing to the journalist and also the people who would be reading the paper by finding an angle that will attract attention. For example you might have six sets of twins as members of your club, or maybe your club just celebrated a birthday milestone. Presentation • Must be on a letterhead • Identify it as a media release on the top left • Date it top right • Use a catchy headline • Use one side of the paper only and keep to one page where possible • Check for spelling and typos • Typed not handwritten Information • Who, what, when, why, where and how? • Use short paragraphs, clear sentences and use the KISS principle (keep it simple stupid!) • Make your first paragraph short and punchy. It is the story in a nutshell • Provide news angles (ie focus on what is news –

• • • •

check your local paper for ideas) Use present tense and active language Include important facts and statistics but don’t overload Use quotes to support your story Have someone proof your story

Contacts • Provide a contact telephone, mobile, fax and email for more information • Make sure the contact person is available and returns calls promptly The Media • Identify the media you are targeting • Take time to find out how they prefer to receive information (email/phone/fax) and what their deadlines are • Don’t be pushy, instead willingly provide information and be prepared to assist the journalist in their pursuit of a story • Follow up your release with a short phone call or email: “Just wanted to ensure you received our release and let you know we are available to help you in anyway possible” • Develop a relationship with the journalists you regularly deal with • Offer to send it JPEG photos after your event If you would like to recognise a local journalist or media outlet for publishing a great story on your club, you can nominate them for the Club Media Story of the Year Award. Nominations for the 2015 Awards for Excellence open in early February.

PRESS RELEASE NUMBER OF PAGES: ONE

HEADING: AT LEAST TWO CLUB STORIES ARE PRINTED IN EVERY ISSUE OF STATE &

COMMUNITY NEWSPAPERS

LEAD PARAGRAPH: The lead paragraph (first sentence) of every media release and story is the most important and should broadly answer the most important of the who, what, where, when, why questions. It should be short and punchy and normally no more than 30 words long. The main avenue to raise a club’s profile within the local community is by working with local and State media. Regular publicity of your club through newspapers, radio and television will help develop and maintain a strong reputation with new and prospective members. Publicity through the media can provide many benefits for sport and social clubs including raising awareness of events and activities, attracting sponsors, increasing and retaining members and recruiting volunteers. Sport, social and recreation clubs have many opportunities to publicise events and activities that would interest the media and the wider community. Community newspapers print many human-interest stories and if you look at Perth newspapers over the past month, there are normally at least two articles on grass-roots clubs in each issue. Clubs WA Marketing and Events Officer Holly Hazel says there are many human-interest and issue-based stories you could target your local paper with including a grant or funding success, competition winners, club or volunteer anniversaries or events. “Also referred to as a press release, media releases are the standard way of sharing stories with the media,” Ms Hazel said. “Journalists and newsrooms receive hundreds of media releases each day so before contacting the media with a story you need to think about how you can make your information readable and interesting – find an angle that is going to attract attention and is going to make people want to read keep reading.” The story should broadly answer at least three of the W questions in the first sentence. The first sentence is referred to as the ‘lead paragraph’ and is the most important sentence of the story. Readers and journalists make decisions very quickly about whether they will read a story or not and if your lead paragraph is interesting and punchy people are more likely to read it. Facts should be discussed in order of importance – if an editor needs to shorten your story to make it fit in the newspaper, they will start cutting from the bottom of the page. Once you have broadly answered the most important questions in the first sentence, you can then expand on your story in the second and third paragraphs.
