Dear Member, Our industry celebrated our “night of nights” in style on the 13th of June at Crown Perth. Many donned the masquerade masks for our first ever sold out event with 470 people in attendance. We were fortunate to have both Minister Holt and Minister Simpson attend as our special guests on the evening to present our main awards as well as representatives from industry associations and partners across Australia. It was also great to catch up with so many of you on the night as we took our once in a year opportunity to celebrate what the licensed club industry has achieved for this state. We have received positive feedback from attendees on the night’s proceedings including the fantastic Stratosfunk band and MC Mark Readings. We have also received positive media stories on this event which helps to promote our industry and club membership. Below are a few points from my speech on the night that highlights our amazing industry: • We in the club industry are quiet achievers. We just get on with the job of making our local communities stay alive. And that is why keeping these awards going is so important to Clubs WA. It is
State Council
our once a year opportunity to celebrate what this industry has accomplished – not just to the local economy - but also to the social fabric of WA. • Whether you are a finalist, supplier, representative or guest, every one of you has played a significant role in shaping our industry. • There is much in society today for us to easily detach ourselves from others – things such as: Work demands; health concerns; personal issues; and even just being time poor. Within this environment, maintaining and growing our club industry is vital to ensuring our society remains connected. Clubs WA remains committed to promoting the values and needs of licensed clubs in this state so that we can continue to service our local communities into the future. As I stated at our Awards night, I look forward to continue working closely with you all to promote our industry. In doing so, our clubs will continue to make a positive difference to society – as you all do every day. Thank you for being a part of this rewarding and evolving industry. Best wishes, Karen

Royal Perth Yacht Club 150th Anniversary Written by Sofia Krsmanovic, Marketing Intern The Royal Perth Yacht Club, the third oldest yacht club in Australia, is celebrating their 150th birthday this year. The club was established on the Perth Esplanade at the end of William Street in 1865 by a group of pioneered sailors who held yacht races for Foundation Day each year. The club is now situated on Matilda Bay, in the suburb of Crawley. In 1890, the Club received the title and prefix of Royal from Queen Victoria after the recommendation of Governor Sir Frederic Napier Broome.
The Royal Perth Yacht Club began their 150th birthday celebration in October last year and concluded with a Ball at Government House on Saturday 30th May.
|
Royal Perth Yacht Club also hosted the Parmelia Race, an 18,266 kilometre race, from Plymouth, UK to Perth in 1979 as part of Western Australia’s 150th Anniversary Celebrations. More recently, Royal Perth Yacht Club has produced champion sailors, including; Olympic Gold Medallist, Elise Rechichi, Paralympic Gold Medallists Jamie Dunross & Graeme Martin, Silver Medallist Rachael Cox, Bronze medallist Colin Harrison and World Champion Steven Thomas.

Alan Bond’s win in 1983 America’s Cup ended the 132-year streak held by the New York Yacht Club and brought world focus to Fremantle and the Royal Perth Yacht Club. This win earned the club the right to host the 1987 America’s Cup in Fremantle. This larger-thanlife international event sparked interest for the state to establish new developments including the Hillary’s Boat Harbour, extensions to the railway line, and Challenger Harbour.

Training improves employee engagement. In this article we are going to take a look at the benefits of training to your employees and how that translates into engagement in the workplace.
The first, and most obvious, benefit is the achievement of successful completion. This not only adds to an employee’s skills stock, but also creates a sense of self-esteem. But there are other, very real advantages.
Employees can look at training as a reward or gift.
One recent study examined the relationship between the provision of training and the rate of absenteeism. Where employers consistently offered skills training and professional development, there was a 15% lower incidence of personal leave. Researchers found that employees observed training to be somewhat like a gift or reward from the employer, which was reciprocated in the form of more consistent attendance – and engagement – at work. This principle, the 'Gift Exchange Theory', demonstrates that most employees will reward perceived generosity from the employer with greater loyalty and contribution.
Employees appreciate investment in them
A question employers often ask of themselves is: ‘What if I train my team members and they leave?’ The stock response to this is ‘What if you don’t train them and they stay?’ There is a more constructive answer. Most people recognise that any training they undertake on work time and funded by their employer is an investment. Not only an investment in the business, but an investment in them. And the return on this investment for the employer is deeper engagement and greater commitment from the employee. To get maximum value from your investment in training:
We are proud to offer Nationally Recognised Training as an official Registered Training Organisation (RTO).
• Ensure it is relevant to the employee’s accountabilities now or in the future. • Select quality training providers with a proven track record, such as ATI-Mirage. • Make good use of the new/enhanced competence: don’t let skills decay set in. • Create opportunities for skill-share and skills transfer within and beyond the team. • Encourage continuous improvement.

Club News Our State Budget 2015-16 - Protecting and supporting our community: Grassroots sport support continues
“It also encourages children to get back to unstructured play, which in itself is good but has many positive flow-on health benefits.” ClubTalk provides State sporting associations and industry peak bodies with the tools to use information communication technology to make running a club easier and more cost-effective. The CVP helps clubs recruit, train and retain a new generation of volunteers. Treasurer Mike Nahan said the Government was committed to funding programs which supported communities, especially those that encouraged physical activity. “Sport 4 All encourages healthy, connected communities and that is why we are continuing to invest in these worthwhile programs,” Dr Nahan said.

The Minister said that since its inception in 2011, the hugely successful KidSport program had seen more than 43,000 children aged between five and 18 receive up to $200 to join a local club to play sport. “KidSport is more than just joining a sporting club,” she said. “Research shows that when kids join a club and get more physically active, they learn better. We also know there are so many mental, social and physical benefits for people being active. ”Nature Play WA which was founded by the State Government
- will receive $500,000 this year to support its work to encourage parents to balance the time children sit in front of screens with time spent outside being active. “Nature Play has become a much-loved way for families to discover and explore the outdoors,” Ms Davies said.

Community grassroots sport will get a further boost over the next two years with $10 million for the State Government’s highly successful Sport 4 All program. Comprising four initiatives in KidSport, Nature Play, ClubTalk and the Community Volunteer Project (CVP), the package increases participation in community sport and recreation in Western Australia. Sport and Recreation Minister Mia Davies today announced the funding as part of the 2015-16 State Budget.

Steve Spallarosa, Education and Advisory Officer from the Department of Racing, Gaming & Liquor, provided an informative overview of club and club restricted licences. Steve provided an excellent insight into the functioning of the department and the roles of compliance officers, stressing that the issuing non-compliance notices was not the desired outcome for visits to clubs. Steve spoke at length of the department’s keenness to work with clubs to ensure all clubs were compliant with the departments rules.
Associations Act
Open Forum
Karen Giles, CEO from Clubs WA, provided an overview of the proposed changes to the Incorporations Act, which looks very likely to move through parliament without further amendment proposed. C l u b s WA will provide a full overview of the changes to the Act when the “new” Act is released.
During and after the light luncheon people were invited to talk with any of the presenters about their club and general conditions in the club industry. Steve Spallarosa, Karen Giles and Clubs WA staff gladly engaged in frank and open discussions about numerous issues for more than an hour, with the final consensus being that the workshop had been a valuable exercise in good governance and general compliance.
