Robertsparents,ThomasHearneandAnnStyles,bothofStokeLyne,weremarried on15thJuly1745atMagdalenCollegeOxford.Itwasquitecommonpracticefor parishionerstotraveltotheplacewheretheincumbentclerichadtrainedinsteadof beingmarriedintheirlocalchurch,sothatisthenearestwecancometoclaimingany connectionwithOxforduniversity.

Edward’sparentswereRobertandElizabeth(Wilson)whosebirthsandmarriages wereregisteredatStokeLyne,veryclosetoFritwell,bothverysmallvillages.Edward wasthefourthoftheireightchildren.Thisisnowbeautifulfarmingcountry,with black-facedsheepgrazingthelushgreenpaddocks.

Againtheanswerisusuallyno.Mostoftentheywereagriculturallabourerswith nosuchillusionsofgrandeur.Therealanswerismoreprosaicandpeculiarto Oxford,wheremanyoftheacademicswereclerics,whowouldsupplementtheir financeswithanincumbencyofoneofthesurroundingruralparishes.This requiredthemtobepresentintheirparishonSundaystoconductservicesbut theyspenttherestoftheweekinthecity.Sosomewerereluctantto"traipseall thewayoutintothesticks",onotherdaysoftheweektomarryacouple.”

Eli’sparents,EdwardandMary(Row)werebornandmarriedinFritwellin Oxfordshire,wheretheirfirst3childrenwereborn.TheythenmovedtoAylesburyin Buckinghamshire,andlivedinKingsbury,thebusysquareinthemiddleoftown, whichwasamixtureofshops,andcottagestuckeddownentries.Theirnextaddress wasWaltonHamletwheretheStratfoldsalsolivedandtheircottagewastheverylast oneinWalton.

WestartourstoryoftheHearnfamilywithEliandLucyHearnwhowerethe firstofourancestorstotaketheopportunityofabetterlifeontheothersideofthe worldemigratingtoAustralia.

BacktoEliandLucy,theyweremarriedinSt.Mary’s,Aylesburyon23rdJuly 1848.HeatherhadthethrillofwalkingalongthepebbledlanebetweenKingsbury SquareandStMaryswheretheywouldhavewalked,thenthroughtheoldgraveyard andintoStMarys,areallybeautifuloldchurch.Italkedtotheladywhowasputting flowersinthechurch,andshetoldmeofthetraditionstillcarriedontoday,ofputting redflowersorberriesonthetombofAnne,LadyLee,wifeofSirHenryLee,everyday forthelast400years.

TheHearns

Edwardwasdescribedasashepherd,possiblyworkingoutsidethetownitselfat oneofthethreegreatsheepfarmstotheWest,atthelastvillagecalledFleetMarston, whereeventhechurchhadbeendemolishedtomakesheepfoldsandafarmhouse. Therewerepracticallynocottagesthere,soworkershadtoliveinAylesburyorthe villageofWeddesonontheotherside.

ThetownofAylesburywasanobviousplaceforayoungersontogotomakehis fortune,andthisiswhyJohnStratfold,Lucy'sfather,wasbornthere.Hemadewhat waspotentiallyagoodmarriage,sincehisbride,LucySeymour,seemstohavebeen relatedtoSilvanusSeymour,whose familyrananironmongerybusinessin Kingsbury,oneofthemainshopping streets.

LucySeymourmarried

JohnStratfoldonthe26thMarch1826, andSilvanusmusthaveapproved thematch,sincetherewasnoelement ofcompulsiontobeseen.Inaperiod whenmostfirstbabiescamefairly rapidlyontheheelsofthewedding,the Stratfoldswereconspicuousinnot havingtheirfirstchildbaptiseduntil almostexactlyayearlater.Shewas namedRebeccaafterMrs.SilvanusSeymour.

JohnStratfold(orfull)wasclassedasalabourer,whichinthetownmighthave meantafarmworkerononeofthesmallfarmsontheoutskirts,agardenlabourerin oneofthehousesormarketgardenswhichgrewvegetablesfortheinhabitants,ora workerinoneofthebrickyardsorothersmallindustriesinthetown.Walton,the suburbhemovedtoin1833,wasreallyavillagejustoutsideAylesbury,butaribbon offinegentryhouseshadbridgedthegap,soitwasamixedarea.Itisoneofthefew partsofAylesburywhichstillretainsmanyofitsoldhouses.Thevillageduckpond remainsandevenafewdaringducks,butthisisnowwithinthegroundsofthePolice Station.WhenJohnStratfoldlivedthere,Waltonwasthemainapproachtothetown ofAylesbury.CoachescameroundbyWaltontilltheyceasedtorun,whenthe railwaystookover.ThelittleStratfoldswouldhavebeenabletowatchthecoaches runningon,andcheeredthemanwhofirstmadethejourneytoandfromLondonin oneday. In1841,JohnStratfoldhadmadeanadvance-hewasacarpenterasdescribedin thecensus,sopossiblyhehadlabouredinatimberyard,oronbuildings,whichwere goinguprapidlyonthe'NewRoad'(nowHighSt).TheHearnslivedjustdownthe Fig8:Aylesbury

NowwemovetotheStratfolds,Eli’swifeLucy’ssideofthefamily.

LucyStratfold’sfamilylivedinNewZealand,andEliHearnprobablycourtedherin California.Thismayseemunlikelyuntilyouknowthatbothplaceswereontheedges ofAylesburytowninBuckinghamshire,England.Californiawasthefancifulname giventoabrookonthesouthofthetown,runningthroughmeadowswhichwerea favouriteplaceforcourtingcouples.

Inthenatureofthings,thechiefpropertyunderEnglishlawwenttotheeldestson. Iffatherwasdoingreallywell,thenhemightbuyabitofextralandwhichhecould leavetoayoungerson,oreventwoyoungersons.However,beyondthat,thenthebest asoncouldexpectwastohaveanapprenticeshiptoagoodtrade,inwhichhehadthe opportunityofdoingwellandbuyinglandofhisown.TheStratfoldsrantomanysons, sothebutterwasspreadratherthinlybythetimeitcametotheyoungersonsof youngersons.

TheStratfoldswereyeomanfarmers,andthenameappearsasStratfoldintheearly years,thenStratfieldandevenStratfull.Theearlyformindicatesthemeaning,they lived‘atteford’onthe‘strat’orRomanroad.

FourmonthsaftertheirmarriageLucy(20)andEli(22)travelledtoAustraliaon theOspreyasassistedimmigrants,toworkforJasAustinofGeelongfor6months at£30,withrations,agoodwageforthosetimes.TheyarrivedinMarch1849after 117daysatsea,andlivedinGeelong,NewtownandIrishTownareauntil1857, wherethefirstfourchildrenwereborn.EliEdwardwasborninCarngham,andthe last5werebornatRokewoodJunction.

WhendrivingtodayfromGeelongyoucanimaginehowitwouldfeelforLucyon herjourneytotheJunctionandthegoldfields.Shewas20whenshemarried,and camefromaquitewell-to-dofamilywhoownedseveralproperties,oneinthecentre ofAylesbury.Thevillagesaremostlywithinwalkingdistanceofeachother,the fieldssmallwithhedgesorstonefencestoseparatethemall.AylesburyisinaVale orValleysomethingliketheBacchusMarshareaalthoughnotassteep.Tobe confrontedwiththesweepingplains,nohouses,nofences,stretchingformiles, wirhtheprospectofatenttoliveinmusthavebeenterrifying,particularlywith smallchildrentocarefor.

The19thcenturypopulationexplosionintheUnitedKingdomsawmillionsliving inpoverty.Emigrationwasseenasanopportunitytoseekbetterconditionsoranew life.

TheJourneytoAustralia

Whytheycameandthejourney

Before1860,theBritishEmigrationCommissionselectedpotentialassisted emigrantsbyasetofstrictcriteria.TheAustraliancoloniessoughtsingleand marriedagriculturalworkersand,withsomanymalecolonists,singlefemale domesticservantswerealsoindemand.Specificassistedemigrationschemeswere setuptoencouragewomentoundertakethepassagetoAustralia.

Thejourneytookaround2monthsandalthoughwewouldthinkthatitwouldbe fairlyprimitiveonboarditappearsthatitwasmuchmoreorganizedthanI imagined.TheStateLibraryofNSWdescribingtheEmigrantexperienceandlifeon boardBritishships.

JamesandThomasAustinoriginallyimmigratedtoTasmaniabutcrossedBassStrait in1837andestablishedextensivepastoralholdings.Until1843Jamesowned Geelong'sleadingbutchery.HewasanaldermanofGeelong'sfirsttowncouncil,and in1851itssecondelectedmayor.

Afternoonswereusuallyfreeforemigrantstodoastheyliked.Dependingontheweather,leisuretimewasspentsewing, readingorwritinglettersanddiaries.

AustralianDictionaryofBiography EmigrationCommissionwhichofferedassistedmigration.Overonemillion immigrants(eitherassistedorunassisted)arrivedinAustraliafromtheUnited Kingdomduringthe1800s.

Mostpassengersexperiencedcrampedconditionswhentravelling.Allwererequiredtoprovidesuf�cientclothing,utensils,and beddingforthelongseavoyageandevencabinclasspassengerswererequiredtoout�ttheirownberthsforthevoyage. Handbookswereavailabletohelpemigrantsprepareforthevoyagewithadviceaboutwhattoexpectonboardandsuggestions ontheclothingtheyshouldpackforthejourney.

LucyandEli’sfirstemployerwhenarrivinginAustraliawasJas(James)Austin. ManynewlyarrivedimmigrantswereemployedundersimilartermsasEli’sandwe wouldpresumehewasemployedasafarmlabourer.

Emigrantswereoftenrestrictedintheirmovementonboard.Singlemenwereusuallyberthedinthebow,marriedcouplesin themiddle,andsinglewomeninthestern.Firstclasspassengershadexclusiveuseofthepoopdeckandentertainedintheir cabinsorthesaloon.Passengerswithlowerclassesofticketcouldenterthisareabyinvitationonly.Singlewomenwereclosely supervisedbythematron,whowasresponsiblefortheirphysicalandmoralwellbeing,andwerekeptphysicallyseparated (usuallyfencedoff)fromtherestofthepassengersandsometimeslockeddownatnight.

Passengersweredividedintomessesofbetweensixtotenadultsbeforeboarding.Eachmesswouldcook,eatanddrawtheir rationstogether.Thoseinsteerage,secondandthirdclasscabinswererequiredtocooktheirownfood.Mealscouldincluderice pudding,seapie,peasoup,andoatmealporridge.Differentclassesofticketdictatedpassengers’rations. Emigrantshadtobeoutofbedby7am,withallthechildrenwashedanddressedbeforebreakfastat8amandthensentoffto school.At9amthedeckswerecleanedandgroupsassignedtocleanareasoftheshipthatdidn’tbelongtoaparticularmess. Dinnerwasat1pm,teaat6pmandlightsoutat8pm.Governmentregulationsdeterminedthedailyroutineonboard BritishemigrantshipsaswellasmanyprivateshipsleavingEnglishports.Steeragepassengerswererequiredtocleantheir ownberths(asweresomesecondandthirdclasspassengers)andthiswashowmostemigrantsstartedtheirday.Regulations alsodictatedthetimingofreligiousservicesandweeklymustersforinspectionsbytheSurgeonSuperintendent,washdaysand dailycleaningofthe‘coppers’.

Voyageswerelong,uncomfortableanddangerous.Emigrantsfacedthethreatof storms,sickness,fire,icebergs,andshipwrecks.Forpassengersinsteerage, conditionswerecrampedandlevelsofhygienepoor.Badweathermeantpassengers wereoftenstuckbelowdeck,unabletoaccesstheirtrunksintheholdforclean clothesorbedding.9https://www.sl.nsw.gov.au/stories/emigrating)

Departmenthadreceivedobjectionsonthegrounds

ThisapplicationwasrefusedastheMining thatthelandwasstillbeingusedformining,andEli hadtolodgeanotherapplicationtooccupytheland. Againhehadtowaituntil14thFebruary1890to lodgeanotherapplicationtopurchasetheland,and thistimeitwassuccessful,theLicensefinallybeing

TherecordsfortheoriginallandoccupiedbyEliHearninRokewoodJunctionare missing,probablyshreddedduringthewarwhenanypapernotneededwasrecycled forthewareffort! Onthe18thofJuly1872Elilodgedanapplicationtousethelandadjacenttothe originalpropertywhichhewasalreadylivingon.Hehadplaced‘conpicuousposts’on this20acres,whichincludedtenacresdescribedas“stonyandunfitforcultivation”. Thissecond20acresisnowthehomepropertyoftheHadlerfamily.AGoldfields residenceandCultivationLicencewasissuedonthe30thSeptember1873. LandPurchase Tenyearslater,on8thOctober1883Elilodgedan applicationtopurchasetheproperty,havingpaid£20 licensefees.Hehadmadeimprovementsincludinga postandrailandpostandwirefenceallenclosed, andeightacreshadbeenplantedinoatsandwheat. Thevalueoftheseimprovementsamountedto£58.9.0

Eli'sobitsuggeststhatheopenedsome sortofbusinesswhenhearrivedin Geelongbutmummadenoreferencetoit. TheystayedinGeelongforsomeyears whereThomashadabutcher'sshop.Nine childrenwereborninGeelongandSouth MelbournebeforetheymovedtoBanongil, whereEllen,theirlastchildwasbornon 2Feb1859.Theirdaughter,Ann,married MatthewJonesin1856whenshewasa monthshortofher15thbirthday,and herfatherwasawitness.Thefamilylater movedtoLintonwhereBridgetdiedin 1879,ayearafterThomasissaidtohave movedbacktoGeelong.

ThomasmarriedBridgetHardiman(or Hartman)atStMary'sGeelongon3rd Sep1840.Ihavebeenunabletofindout when,howorwhyBridgetcameto Australia,andonlyknowthatshecame fromGalwayinIreland.Shecouldhave comeoutononeofthe"BrideShips" whichbroughtyounggirlsoutforthe thousandsofmenseekingpartners;she couldhavebeenaservantgirlwho travelledoutwithafamilyandwasnot listedasapassenger;shecouldhave beenaconvictherself!Iwillkeeptryingto trackherdown.

Areferencewasmadetohiminthe "GeelongAdvertiser"on28Mar1879as "anolditinerantnamedThomas Parker....betterknownas"Shakespeare" becauseofhisabilitytoquotefromthe worksofthelatteratlength."Another afterhisdeathreferredtoa"wellknowncharacter....whowasknown as"Shakespeare".Hecouldreadand write,characteristicswhichweremost unusualatthattime,whichmeanshe hadsomeeducationbeforehewas convictedat14yearsofageandsentto Australia.PerhapssomedayIwillfind outsomeofhisbackground.
