The regeneration design process of this small-scale city live without the direct contact with the LIFE OF DIFFERENT POPULATIONS IN A LONG CYCLE. Outdated facilities of the village, constantly increased tourists, the desire of villagers for setting up shops to earn money, and concern about the influence of tourists on life, the elder’s yearning for the past and students’ merriment... 01
These coexisting present situations made us try to stand in the perspectives of multiple populations to explore the possibility of the design. In this project, we tried to STIMULATE POSITIVE INTERACTION between different groups and contact the social network with point processing. so as to activate and update the old community from the ECONOMIC, SPACE AND MULTIPLE ASPECTS.
We hope to build and solve changes and results that demolishing has brought in the demolishing and reconstruction in the methods of STAGE PLANNING and FEEDBACK DESIGN and also hope that this kind of process can become the power to DRIVE AND GUIDE THE AUTONOMY UPDATING of the village.
CONCERN
On the edge of the prosperous central district of the city, there are some old houses. They are the place where the city is originated from. They retain the original living pattern, buildings and landscape for the increasingly faster city.
SITE
However, past glory couldn't keep up with nowadays ife demand. Blocked roads shade the sunshine and hinder people’s demand for richer life. In the face of leaving young people, tourists "searching for ancient relics" and elders at eighties or nineties, students nurtured by village culture in our base, old steps in old
quarters and resistant attitudes are out of tune with those things. Someone has moved away, and someone built new houses along the streets. The streets become narrower and the courtyards disappear. People’s life of sitting along the street and drinking tea become increasingly dim. "Old quarter, old life" is going to be evolved into "new quarter, no life.
02
CURRENT SITUATION
1. The transportation from DASHE to the Xiamen Island is not very convenient. Plus the inadequate infrastructure, so people long staying there are more local residents. 2. Villagers are friendly to each other but hold a rejection attitude towards visitors from the outside world, though the visitors increased rapidly these years. 3. DASHE, especially in the southern region, new houses sprung up frequently, streets and alleys are increasingly narrow. Squares are scarcer. What’s worse, introversion arrangement of new houses shades the original street atmosphere where honesty prevails. 4. DASHE is a historical village and retains many valuable architecture and culture. 5. Illegal guidance has become an important source of income for the villagers. 6. The base is located in the Jimei School Village, but the education degree of people inside DASHE is at a very low level, which forms bright contrast with the surrounding environment.
CULTURAL BACKGROUND DASHE, also called Xunwei, is located in the souther nmost tip of Jimei, Xiamen on the brink of the sea. It is the birthplace of ancient Jimei.
As a famous fishing village of those years, its surrounding culture atmosphere is strong with superior humanities landscape resources and colorful fishermen culture, religious culture, overseas Chinese culture and tea culture.
M r. Ta n K a h K e e w a s a f a m o u s overseas Chinese general of our country. He built the Jimei School Village with beautiful scenery and strong culture atmosphere in the south, west and north of DASHE.
Since 1913, Tan Kah Kee ran 10 schools gradually in the hometown, including normal, senior, aquatic products, navigation, business, agricultural and forestry schools. Tan Kah Kee culture is one of the most important spiritual cultures of today’s Xiamen and Tan Kah Kee’s former residence is located in DASHE Village.
DECADENCE In 2002, Xiamen regulated the west sea area of the island, and DASHE people living said goodbye to the traditional life state of making a living by the sea and went ashore to seek further development. Then, since the fishermen were generally at older ages and had lower education level, they couldn't adapt themselves to the work on the shore, and the DASHE is gradually fading as DASHE people go ashore.
LIVING IN DASHE DASHE ever had: living and communication space with a harmonious atmosphere, small courtyard of every household with their own characteristics, harmonious relations with neighbors, honesty and order prevailing and living nearby. People got up early to work and old people gathered together under the sunshine and chatted with each other. Children jumped rubber band and sat at the old people’s sides. These ways of life are what we want to strive to retain and are the reason why today's DASHE people stay at this land.
Existing Function Facilities
Function Facilities Wanted
03
With the emergence of some problems, lack of jobs and public facilities and inconvenient travelling of the community make young people want to leave the place. Old housing can't satisfy the modern life and new buildings of a single style are lacking in public space. DASHE gradually loses its original space characteristics and the traditional life also gradually become pale.

TRAFFIC Xunjiang Road
Dashe Road
Aoyuan Road
With Xunjiang Road and Aoyuan Road as the main research objects The followings can be concluded through analysis of traffic structure layout of major trunk roads 1. There are plenty of private cars on the trunk road. Take the parking lot nearby the park road as a starting or end point and vehicles cannot run on the park road. 2. There are almost no bicycles on Aoyuan Road and the park road. Bicycles on Xunjiang Road mainly enter the internal road of the region and most are transportation tools of interior residents of the residential area. 3. Vehicles for the disabled in the area are used as passenger transportation tools. Vehicles mainly pick up passengers on Aoyuan Road and park at the park entrance and return.
Food Market
4. Part of scooters and motorcycles in the area are used as household vehicles and part for passenger transportation, which is combined with the distribution characteristics of bicycles and vehicles for the disabled. With Dashe Road and the Food Market as the main research objects DASHE Road is taken as a primary road and the food market as a secondary road in the area. The followings can be concluded through analysis of the traffic structure: 1. Roads in the area only allow scooters, motorcycles and bicycles. 2. Scooters and motorcycles are the majority. 3. Traffic flow of the primary road is larger than that of the secondary road.

LOCATION SELECTION
We selected the are located in less prosperous and active southern DASHE. Few pathways in the area and business atmosphere is weak. However, the east entrance of the base is adjacent to the south gate of the Tan Kah Kee Park (the north gate is closed all the year around), the south entrance close to Jimei Middle School and the west side looking at the Tan Kah Kee’s former residence. The base has two ancestral halls with better atmosphere and a rare activity center for senior citizens. With higher residential floors, general lighting and ventilation are poor and single block is divided into fragments, resulting in poor space utilization.

SOCIAL NETWORK Demolishing old buildings and reconstruction are not our intention and we would rather search for a key point and make a change. Add public facilities, shape public space and create the "point" multi-populations converge at. Start from point shaping to enrich and activate the original street space and connect wires and network to provide a platform for the communication activities of each population, promote their mutual communication as well 05
as visual connection between each public space so as to create rich communication stories in DASHE. Stimulate the vitality of old quarters from the economic and life aspects with top-down triggering bottom-up to inject new life into old quarters.

The phase transformation example of Daikanyama integrated residential housing is a typical stage updating success. In terms of the characteristics of six stages, each stage is based on but different from the previous stage, which reflects the changes of the construction law and changes of external characteristics. The most important thing is the dialogue between the so-called buildings and street forms, and this principle goes throughout the design of the whole hillside platform. The process composed of short broken pieces in fragment form and private land provides a large amount of public space. Public characteristics in the process of design and development become more and more attractive as the time changes.

CASE ANALYSIS
REGIONAL ACTIVATION STRATEGIES
1.
Keep building “social network”.
Its significance is to activate points and arrange transportation while protecting the privacy of residents’ life in the "grid" and keeping the original traits of the regional life, including inexpensive price and other advantages. 2.
Guiding reconstruction in place of demolishing
In the reconstruction of street business and life squares, use certain replicable techniques through the design of combining regional climate characteristics to supply and integrate life support that the region is lacking in so as to guide the villagers to conduct spontaneous reconstruction and spread the "network". 3.
Stage planning construction
Through the analysis of the characteristics of each block, crowd distribution and different needs, use stage design in order to avoid the formation of the total plane design of static giant construction, and make timely adjustment to new problems which are probably generated in the process of the stage design.
07
TIMELINE 1 Build squares and trunk roads to guide the stream of people. 2 Guide residents migration from the passenger flow section and the reconstruction of the original site shall be combined with reconstruction shops. 3 Rebuild media centers and other public buildings at nodes to offer service for different people. 4 Rebuild old houses, increase the number of living houses (for immigrates in the transformation process) and improve the living quality. 5 Add core buildings to enrich internal life. 6 Shape site landscape space and protect life privacy of the residents. 7 Add public facilities, attract backpackers and improve the whole path.

The design is mainly divided into two phases. The focus of the first phase is to utilize tourist resources, create job opportunities and open up the south trunk road. And the focus of the second phase is to place reconstruction residents, protect living picture and drive regional activation.
Guiding Reconstructions According to higher residential floors in the base, generally poor lighting ventilation, fragment division of single block and poor space utilization, we start from these points to rebuild residential housing and at the same time rebuild outer space. "Please open the door and come in," change the present situation of negative appearance of different populations in the base.
1
2
3 Looking at the Gulangyu Island in Xiamen in despite of negative factors caused by over-open business, people are still willing to live in this place. The deep reasons are activation development of outer space and comfortable living space in the road network. The intensiveness of people’s communication and privacy of local residents have different degrees of separation and control. The arrival of tourists and backpackers and the communication among tourists, backpackers, students, the elderly and residents exist in this block as one kind of positive factor. This is the balance point that we want to find.

ANALYSISES OF DESIGN EFFECTION TEXTURE ANALYSIS
For the whole DASHE texture, the texture of the selected site is more trivial and messy and lacks public space. Our point selection processing method is to adjust measures to local conditions and start from the actual conditions of each field. Arrange too fragment houses which are in bad use and protect and utilize old buildings to the greatest extent. Save DASHE culture and life style as well as memorable squares. Make up for demolished private houses and retain the original texture scale at the same time.

The significance of network living model lies in paying attention to the connection among all kinds of life scenes, characters and behaviors. Modern life need network. For example, you can listen to drama on the way to buying food and see your old mom and dad exposed under the sunshine in the garden or you can run a shop in the village, because your home is in the upstairs and your child is having class in the counseling center at the next door. You can them once raising your head and feel very secure and stable. Good space renders you a good mood and a happy life. The best space will shape a better life for you. So we research, visit, think and study. We start form points to unblock roads and link them into a network. We are not only to attract people to come in with good space but also to keep them stay. Let the grid full of angry and the place ringed up by the grid full of the good life in order to achieve the real activation. We also hope that our processing to each point starting from their own characteristics and the transformation to the old buildings can become a continuation of "teach people how to fish", which can play certain guiding role in spontaneous reconstruction and development of the old village and let activated network spontaneously spread.
LIVING MAP IN THE SOUTH STREET OF DASHE For visitors, they want to see not only the buildings and space but also the vitality and rich stories when they walk into the DASHE; For residents, what can let them stay is not only the endless stream of opportunities but also the warm and peaceful life behind the prosperity and liveliness.

PROJECT 2
In the modern city, people compress the NEEDS IN DIFFERENT SPACE AND DIFFERENT TIME DIMENSIONS into a city complex, such as, high-rise offices, commercial shops and public transport interchange. We also hope that such a life pattern is NOT finished in the vertical dimension of a SINGLE HIGH-RISE BUILDING. This project, we try to introduce the form of STREET NETWORK into the buildings. Buildings have become a THREEDIMENSIONAL BLOCK and become a part of the city, which not only meet the demand of OPTIMIZATION block and EXPAND THE POSIBILITY of the field but also OFFERS A MULTI-FUNCTIONAL SITE FOR THE SOCIAL LIFE OF SURROUNDING AREAS.

Xiamen: a window of China's reform and opening and a rapid-rising coastal economic zone; Xiamen Island has limited land, and it is a must to look for the development direction outside the island in order to expand development. Jimei: closely linked to Xiamen through the Jimei Bridge, which is not only a cultural and historical area, but also is a new basis point for the rise of the city. Base: case site is located in the planning core block of Jimei new city, which is the first station out of the island of the Jimei Bridge, so this node is not only a good office space but also a hub of public transportation.

STRATEGIES COMPARING
Single tower, annex and bus transfer of west side organization HIGHER to meet the size requirements. Bus stations in a separate state lack organic links with BRT.
Double-dimension Small annex bus transfer of the southwest corner organization Convenient to arrange office public space and can be lower. But the annex has less and scattered size.
Three-block, run-through vitreous body, bus transfer of island-style organization Carry on the advantages of scheme II and optimize: 1. Pull through the vision to effectively improve the environment relationship of the two blocks.
Day rail and shadow analysis The height is too large, so that there is still a long shadow of a large area falling on group buildings in the north even the red line is pushed away for 50 meters.
Day rail and shadow analysis Double-dimension effectively shortens the building shadow in the north and produce mutually overshadowing energysaving effect due to the dislocation arrangement of the dimension.
2. The reinforcement of mutual shading creates conditions for the use of curtain wall The directions of rotated blocks make the mutual overshadowing energy-saving effect obvious.
Insolation Analysis (total sunlight hours) Provided by autoCAD-Ecotectanalysis (purple-little, yellow-much). Through the analysis we found the influence of doubledimension relationship on sun exposure, but the effect was not obvious.
3. Insolation Analysis (total sunlight hours) Compared with scheme II, the sunshine intensity between blocks becomes greatly effective, so we can be at ease to use the glass curtain wall in these parts.
Lighting analysis(daylight factor) Provided by autoCADEcotectanalysis. It can reflects the average sunshine the field gets all the year around (blue-little, yellow-much).

Iosvisit compachness Iosvisit compachness is the space visual contact degree which expresses the continuity of each part of the space (blue-good, red-bad). Continuity is a condition to form a good business atmosphere and it shows that organizations of commercial stores had higher continuity through analysis.

It was proved that the concept of the bridge we put forward in the early stage smoothly linked the stream of people through analysis. In addition, we later added a few links to balance the stream of people and improve the accessibility of the near end of the space.

The left side is the first draft of the plan, and it was found that a great piece of red area had low accessibility after analysis. B. The right side is the optimization scheme. We increased a corridor in the west to make the three floors form a circuit so as to improve space contact degree, and increased an escalator as the analysis reference point on this basis. PROJECT 4
What to do when SITE MEMORY has collision with BUILDING DEMAND? In this project, the building TAKE A STEP BACK INTO THE SITE. Blanking building became a new center of the area and expanded the possibility of the site and itself.
37
OPERATING RETHINKING 38
The site is adjacent to the main avenue of the campus in the west, and south to the lakeside road. And it is also the only way from the teaching area to the canteen in this area. The traffic flow is large.
The plot is located to the south of Qiuzhong lake . To the north of the demolishing building is a district park of this area. The LANDSCAPE is quite well. Mainroad in Campus Center Green Space Main Buildings and Areas Relevant Buildings

Buildings in this block have t r a d i t i o n a l a rc h i t e c t u r a l style and bright colors, the building beside the site is a strip teaching building with FOUR LAYERS
With the continuous development of a university, teaching positioning and scale of students CHANGE dramatically. In this project, Huaqiao University, Quanzhou Campus. We intended to dismantle an office building, converted in situ liberal arts branch libraries (including a Library and Information Center), in order to meet the new demand. Scale: the use of an area of about 2400m2, a collection of 200,000 books. Â
STRATEGIES COMPARING Strategy 1 large-scale public building
The original building is barely open. The green landscape is used as a R E G I O N A L PA R K without connection to the building individually. Value of the green space
Strategy 2 Large concession for the green space

How can the SITE express itself mostly? How can it be connected with PEOPLE and their BEHAVIOR? Be appreciated as an art? Be constructed as a shelter? Can be made into desks and chairs? Can be made into lights? Or provide people amusing space to shuttle there like insects? Growing vines is a digital project based on the investigation into a chosen plant and the study of physical simulation plugin-in in digital design. Mainly work on finding the biggest POSSIBILITY to recreate an exsiting site.

Biomimetic and Architectural Autopoiesis We choose the element of plants from the circumstance, as a protection to the historical Chinese courtyard buildings and the environment surroundings. Since the plants are known as the NATURAL FAIRYLAND FOR INSECTS, we decide to study a plant to create our pavilion. We investigate a plant’s growth characteristic, to provide VIVID SPACE and poetic aspect morphology. On the other hand, they may help a lot in protecting the privacy of the offices in the site. 47
Dodder Seed The chosen plant is “Dodder Seed”, which is a VINE SYSTEM BASED PLANT that has natural behavior of SELF-ATTRACTION and ATTRACTION TO ITS CARRIER. We were interested in this way and made deep study into it.
We generate this "Growing Vines" in 3 STEPS.
48
STEP1-- UNIT: MODULE MODEL GENERATING
We studied the growth pattern of Dodder Seed and tried to display its behavior through digital model, in which we generated our module model. Each group consists of two components: the vines and the root, each part is generated from a grasshopper program respectively.
Generation of UPPER VINES The vines are simulated by Kangaroo, a physical plug-in of grasshopper. The vine is divided into equal segments, a springiness is added between the end of segments. Moreover, an attractive power is exerted between each pair of points on the vines in a group. At different interval of time, the system runs, we could get different types of vines.
49
Physical Models Denoting Morphology of Vines Twist in Different Number
Generation of ROOTS Roots extending from end of vines are generated by a script based on L-system, while the generation, l e n g t h a n d c u r v a t u re o f e a c h section could be modified.

CONCEPTUAL Physical Model We combine hose and wire to denote the wines growing in the site. The dot at the end of the vines shows the light they could emit in real project.
OPERATION
In this diagram volume of the cubes stands for weight of factors affecting the distribution of growing system
1 Pedestrain circulation analysis 2 Solar distribution analysis 3 Specific points are selected according to the contribution of the two factors above, which preliminarily decides height and position of the units 4 Add relative force to the connections between the points to simulate the intention to interweave together of dodder seed 5 Units are applied to the modified points 6 Roots are generated at the end of Units 52
After the two systems were merged, we started out form FINDING PROCESS with consideration into function. We did some reasonable selection and operate the suitable vines or roots into PUBLIC FURNITURE and FITTINGS.
STEP3: FUNCTION AND HUMAN SCALE
FINAL Perspective 53
It behaves as a ILLUMINATING SYSTEM during night and a DIRECTIONAL LEADING SIGN during daytime. It creates an interesting spatial quality and helps to activate the void space in middle of the courtyard.

Zhaojiapu was the ancient castle for the the Southern Song Dynasty Zhao bereaved families to refuge in. Layout and conception, are all described along the old “Bian”Capital. The Core building-- “Guanting" imitation Southern Song Imperial Palace, built five sites, five into parallel. Our team mapped the west two sites of the ”Guanting” .
SURVEY AND MAPPING OF ZHAOJIABAO
I lead a team of 6 people to complete this mapping. We spent 2 weeks to mapping and painting in the village and 4 weeks to model it into detail. I am responsible for the sections of the building and details of DOUGONG. Meanwhile, furnitures also aroused my interest.
