JAMIE WYETH’S PORTRAITS OF RUDOLF NUREYEV

Jamie Wyeth (b. 1946), son of famed painter Andrew Wyeth, created numerous portraits of the renowned ballet dancer Rudolf Nureyev (1938‒1993). A selection of five portraits is installed in the corridor outside Gallery 10, in the Ross wing. The portraits are on loan from the Brandywine River Museum of Art, in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania. Born in the Soviet Union, Nureyev achieved the status of a ballet superstar after defecting to the US in 1961. His fame in the media and popular culture was unique among his peers in the world of classical dance. Public attention also focused on his private life. His volatile temper was well-publicized, as was his socializing with celebrities, and his alleged love affairs with both men and women. Wyeth’s portraits, rendered in a variety of media, show the dancer on and offstage, posing informally and bare-chested in some works, costumed in others. The unique relationship between subject and artist was the subject of a two-person play, Nureyev’s Eyes (2014) by David Rush. This installation was arranged in partnership with the Columbus theater company CATCO, which had planned to stage a production of the play that was canceled due to Covid-19.

This program is free, registration requested. To register, visit columbusmuseum.org, Events & Programs.

Dr. Amanda Burdan, curator at the Brandywine River Museum of Art, Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, joins Dr. David Stark, chief curator, in an online conversation about Jamie Wyeth’s portraits of Russian ballet dancer Rudolf Nureyev, currently on view in the Ross wing. The works in this installation, on loan from the Brandywine, show the dancer Nureyev, a superstar in his day, both onstage and off, in compelling paintings and sketches by Wyeth, son of famed painter Andrew Wyeth. The curators will also discuss a second installation with a musical theme: four preparatory drawings, recently acquired, now hanging next to a major painting in the CMA collection, Le Ruban Dénoué: Homage à Reynaldo Hahn by Paul Cadmus. This provocative painting, whose title translates as “The Ribbon Untied,” depicts Hahn, a turnof-the-century Parisian composer, in an erotic fantasy, surrounded by male muses. Although of different generations, Cadmus and Wyeth had much in common, as the conversation will reveal.

TARA BOOTH: 2020 COLUMBUS COMICS RESIDENCY EXHIBITION THRU 9.26.21

Tara Booth is the 2020 recipient of the Columbus Comics Residency. This is the ninth year of the program, which is a collaboration between CMA and CCAD. The Museum of Art’s exhibition of Tara’s work is on view in the Open Gallery of CMA’s JPMorgan Chase Center for Creativity.

Tara Booth’s painted comics have gained a widespread and loyal audience for their painterly design, honest humor, and emotional vulnerability. The exhibition includes original paintings by Tara, enlarged reproductions of her work, and clothing printed with patterns she designed.

In an interview with itsnicethat.com Tara said, “A lot of my work is about living with chronic anxiety and depression. Taking the parts of my life that leave me feeling hopeless or out of control, and being able to turn them into something sort of silly through painting helps to transform some of my negative emotions. It’s also super validating and therapeutic to see how many people deal with the same issues and have similar experiences. The more that people can laugh and relate to my work, the more compelled I am to

RAGGIN’ ON: THE ART OF AMINAH BRENDA LYNN ROBINSON’S HOUSE AND JOURNALS MEMBER PREVIEW DAYS NOVEMBER 18 – 20

In 2015, Columbus-based artist Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson (1940–2015) bequeathed her estate, including her home and studio, to the Museum. For the past five years, CMA has documented the art, writings, archives, and library in her house. Raggin’ On is the first major exhibition of the artist’s work since her death and a celebration of Robinson’s vision, and the home and community she cherished. On view at CMA from Nov. 21, 2020–Oct. 3, 2021, Raggin’ On presents more than six decades of Aminah Robinson’s art and writing.

PAGE 12

NOVEMBER/DECEMBER

2020

Guests in Robinson’s home remember a profound sense of both the spiritual and the sacred. The design of Raggin’ On encourages museum visitors to experience that environment through vintage photographs and ephemera, newly recorded conversations with family and friends, and the reconstruction of Robinson’s Writing Room. In addition to drawings, prints, paintings, sculpture, beaded dolls, puppets, and one-of-a-kind books, Raggin’ On highlights some of the more than 150 journals that Robinson kept from the time she was a teenager. An opportunity to digitally peruse a sampling of Robinson’s journals will reveal memoirs filled with poetry, prose, detailed pen and ink drawings, and imaginative watercolors.

Raggin’ On, the title of the exhibition, references Robinson’s belief that her art and writing never end—because the next viewer or the next reader is always adding new perspectives. This interaction between people is at the heart of her effort to record and pass on history and handed-down stories. Her life and work is grounded in the spirit of Sankofa, the African concept of understanding the past in order to move forward. The exhibition invites visitors to experience the artist’s home and creative processes and to better understand her intention “to celebrate the everyday lives and culture of Black people and their endurance through centuries of injustice.” The exhibition is presented in a series of sections starting with Beginnings, which explores the artist’s early life and work including her participation in the 1963 March on Washington. Street Cries documents both the lively spirit and the relentless poverty of the neighborhoods where Robinson lived. Ancestral Voices: From Bondage to Freedom is the artist’s depiction of African and African American history based on her research and the narratives of her elders. Raggin’ On showcases Robinson’s ongoing series about women, the integrated world of the Sellsville Circus, and her travels to Europe, the Middle East, and South America. The Writing Room is a reconstruction of the small,

private room in her home where Robinson wrote in her journals, corresponded with friends, and listened to her favorite classical, jazz, and gospel music. Material Matters explores Robinson’s ingenious use of natural substances and found objects in two- and three-dimensional work. Friends and acquaintances of the artist share their recorded recollections of her and her home in Conversations, the final section of the exhibition.

Raggin On is a reflection of CMA’s commitment to the legacy of MacArthur-award-winning artist Aminah Robinson and the Shepard community of Columbus. It is part of the Aminah Brenda Lynn Robinson Legacy Project, which includes exhibitions, publications, renovation of the artist’s home, and establishment of a residency for Black artists. The exhibition is organized by the Columbus Museum of Art, Ohio, and is co-curated by Carole Genshaft, who worked with Robinson on Museum projects for nearly twenty years; and Deidre Hamlar, who, inspired by Robinson, is a multicultural arts administrator, educator, and voice for underrepresented arts and artists. This exhibition is the most recent of several CMA exhibitions devoted to the artist and reflects the strong relationship Robinson and the Museum shared for many decades. CMA holds the most significant collection of Robinson’s work in the world and is a central location of her archives and library, which the Museum is working to make available to students and scholars.

This exhibition is supported in part by a major Art Works grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. Additional funding provided by PNC Arts Alive.

Join Carole Genshaft, curator-at-large, and Deidre Hamlar, consultant, in an online conversation about the exhibition Raggin’ On: The Art of Aminah Robinson’s House and Journals, which they co-curated. Installed in the Walter Wing and accompanied by a fully-illustrated catalog, this exhibition invites visitors to experience the atmosphere of Aminah’s home studio through her mixed- media art, extensive writings in journals and memoirs, and a sampling of the books and furnishings that made the house her sanctuary. When she passed in 2015, she left her estate — including the house — to the Museum. A preeminent and prolific Columbus artist, she celebrated the the struggles and triumphs of African American life and culture in Ohio as well as distant locations, from the American South to Africa, blending past and present in multi-media works. The curators will highlight exhibition themes, major works, and photos of the recently restored house, providing a lively introduction to this exciting exhibition. PAUL CADMUS’S LE RUBAN DÉNOUÉ: HOMMAGE À REYNALDO HAHN WITH PREPARATORY STUDIES

The Museum recently acquired four preparatory drawings for a painting by Paul Cadmus, Le Ruban

Dénoué: Hommage à Reynaldo Hahn (1963), a major work in the permanent collection. The drawings are installed by the painting in the corridor outside Gallery 4, in the Ross building. The painting depicts the composer Reynaldo Hahn (1874–1947), a legendary Parisian musician whose secretive private life is represented as a fantasy by American artist Cadmus who, like Hahn, was gay.

The figure of Hahn, elegantly dressed, is accompanied by seductive supernatural figures of Pan, a lusty woodland god, and a winged sprite. The kiss of the sprite—as if inspiring Hahn to compose—sends sheets of music floating through the air, as a long ribbon unfurls above. (The French title means “The Ribbon Untied.”) The preparatory pencil drawings consist of two drapery studies, and sketches of the composer’s shoes and crossed legs. The detailed realism seen in Cadmus’s paintings is evident also

unique perspective on the artistic process.
