ABOUT 05

ABOUT ME My work tends to explore the different ways in which sociability can be achieved in cities. These explorations are driven by an interest in how emerging systems and self-organisation works in cities. My work also focuses on generating simple solutions to solve segregation problems, these solutions range from ephemeral structures to creative laboratories that gives the local users the tools which enables them to modify their spaces, achieving much more public participation. My dissertation, titled ‘Street permeability in Paris’, proposed that depending on the street permeability between internal and external spaces sociability could be more or less welcome to take place. The study was based on obsrvation, thus was focused on case studies of street permeability in Paris (my residence during the Erasmus Exchange programme). My final year project, ‘The Shell of the Commons’, focused on exploring all these areas of interest. As a result I proposed the re-use of an existing industrial structure to become a creative social centre that allocated a Fab Lab, a digital fabrication laboratory. The building had different experimental methods of construction, all aiming to be apparently complex but actually available to everyone, not only in terms of its construction, but also cost wise. The project also aimed to provide the public with the tools needed to continue generating more experimental structures as needed.

12 Shell Of The Commons

01

SHELL OF THE COMMONS FAB LAB TUTORS: John Comparelli, Peter Clash, Lucy Inder, Sanaa Shaikh & Robin Wilson ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS: Elena Marco SITE: Sharpness, Gloucestershire PROGRAMME: Fab Lab YEAR: 4

IMPORTANT MENTIONS: Project was selected to be exhibited in the UWE Architecture Graduate Show in the Candid Arts Trust in London. Also selected (together with other 5 projects) to have extra space and a description in the Graduate Year Book. DESCRIPTION: The proposed building is a ‘Shell’ where the community can develop their creations. It allocates a laboratory of digital fabrication (Fab Lab) for common use. Fab Lab’s open a way for personal fabrication contasting the ‘possession of technologies’ to the ‘share use’ and ‘the commons’. The building itself is built using digital fabrication techniques. The internal layout (scaffolding) and landscape structures are mobile and adaptable structures that allow change.

GENERATOR BIG SCALE: FAB LAB – The Shell of the Commons The FAB LAB will allow the regeneration of Sharpness as a whole. It will provide the space and machinery needed to start producing diferent structures to parasite the industrial spaces in decay. It will allow a democratization of production and public space.

THÉÂTRE À PANTAIN THEATRE TUTORS: M. Mazlouman GROUP PROJECT/ PARTNERS: Elisa Targetti & Daniele Oliva SITE: Pantain, Paris PROGRAMME: Theatre YEAR: 3 Erasmus Exchange

Ground floor

DESCRIPTION: Our main precedence was Louis Kahn. The theatre plays with light and also with its materiality and the thickness of its walls. Double walls and natural light play an important role within the theatre. All services and circulation spaces are within these double walls. The concept of the ‘double wall’ has been extrapolated to the exterior spaces. The visitor is guided between green spaces and towards the building in a similar way as light guides the visitor inside the theatre.

MODULAR ROOM/ TAKES OVER OUTSIDE SPACE. DESCRIPTION: The modular theatre room can allocate a total of 250 people. The space can be organized in variable ways, as the seats are modular and mobile. This room can also be opened completely towards the exterior, as one of its sidewalls is in fact mobile acting as a big door. This allows the room to open up towards the gardens outside to organize other events such as concerts, outside theatre or summer cinema between others.

UNCERTAIN HOUSE TRANSGRESSIVE HOUSE TUTORS: David Littlefield SITE: University of the West of England (UWE) Frenchay Campus, Bristol PROGRAMME: Transgressive house for 6 students YEAR: 2 DESCRIPTION: Two floors with a very strict grid of panels that can be moved up or down. All walls are movile. Uncertainty and disorder generates vulnerability and insecurity.

The moving panels generates uncertain spaces, forcing the inhabitants to socialize

Possible plan layouts

Uncertain House 33

Accepting human vulnerability “creates connections as a result of authenticity (Brown, 2011). The changing panels generates sociability through collaboration and agreement between the inhabitants. This project embraces uncertainty and transresses it to encourage sociability within the house.

Ground floor plan

FURNITURE UNIT DESCRIPTION: Each room o the building is specially measured to allocate a total of 5x5 modules of furniture.

Chair and table Total number of modules for chair: 1 for table: 2

Bed organisation example Total number of modules: 10

34 Uncertain House

FURNITURE UNIT

DESCRIPTION: Each inhabitant: total of 15 modular structures and one rolling mattress to generate their spaces. Allowing them to have a bed, chair, table and storage space. The common areas (also mobile): 20 modules. There is a need to achieve agreements upon not only the walls of the building but also the furniture generating much more communication and sociability between the users.

Uncertain House 35

The dimensions for the module are based on a chairs height dimension (450mm) and takes the shape of a perfect cube so it can be placed in any of its faces allowing it to take any position.

STREET PERMEABILITY IN PARIS DISSERTATION TUTORS: Juliet Jain PROGRAMME: Dissertation YEAR: 3 – Done during the Erasmus Exchange/ Tutored in the distance

IMPORTANT MENTIONS: This dissertation was done in the distance achieving a First Class grade.

Avenue de Flandre, 75019, Paris: 3 case studies/ 3 types of permeability

DESCRIPTION: Sociability in cities has been reduced due to the hyper specification of spaces. Different studies and solutions have been developed to solve this problem. These solutions include shared surfaced roads, usage of abandoned spaces and the mix of the usages within cities, between others.

‘going and coming back’ but with no interaction between them. Nonetheless, a greater permeability between public and private spaces will make the public spaces places where to stay and socialize (Whyte, 1980).

The objective of this dissertation is to understand the problematic of sociability in cities as well as the solutions already made by others. This dissertation proposes a possible solution for this lack of sociability. It is proposed that a higher level of permeability within the private-public border will allow more interactions to take place, and thus more sociability.

A permeable city is a city that allows spontaneous interaction between people. A city that is interconnected, with no dependency on the car, not standardized and that allows flexibility and multiple choices within its public spaces. It is also a city with a closer and permeable relation with its abandoned spaces; spaces that by being used will not only reduced the feeling of abandonments in cities but also provide extra spaces for sociability.

When there is a clear boundary between the inside and outside spaces the street becomes just a place lack of interactions where to walk through (Gil Lopez, 2007). The understanding of the border private-public is one of the most important factors to generate life and socialization in public spaces. A border that does not have permeability will only create a street with people

A methodology based on observation has been developed to be able to proof this dissertation’s hypothesis. Observation allows the creation of an organic perception of cities. Cities are dynamic systems and as dynamic systems they should be understood and studied through observation. As dynamic systems cities have the power of self-organization and spontaneous organi-

Street Permeability In Paris 43

Visual and physical permeability

Visual permeability

No permeable border zation, which is a contrast to hyperspecification or excessive planning that takes place when cities are understood as infrastructure or are not observed but just studied theoretically (Johnson, 2001). Observation also allows understanding the city as a space for experimentation and investigation. Is only though observation, trial and error that it is possible to understand cities and therefore provide a right solution for its problems. It is important to understand the value of observation as an architectural practice.

Types of communication (The senses and communication, n.d.)

Chapter 5 of this dissertation proposes three case studies within the Avenue de Flandre, in Paris, that will help understanding the different levels of permeability and its relation with the level of interactions. This chapter collects all the observations and helps drawing the conclusions to verify the hypothesis.
