MESSAGE FROM THE

DISTRICT REPRESENTATIVE CONRADO B. MORGAN

Greetings Brothers, Family, and Friends of the Third District,

I

humbly greet you in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. The district continues to grow, Live our Creed, and exude the cardinal principles (Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance, and Uplift). We continue to be represented by 43 chapters and 2000 noble Brothers providing support to our communities. Congratulations to all our Brothers, citizens, and youth on your Achievement Week awards (Omega Man of the Year, Founders’ Lifetime Achievement Award, Superior Service Award, Colonel Charles Young Military Leadership Award, Citizen of the Year, Basileus Awards, and Essay Contest). Continue the great and unselfish work you are doing for God, family, fraternity, and community. The work you do does not go unnoticed or unappreciated. We are confident your work leaves a long-lasting, positive, and life-changing impression on the lives of those you touch. Notably, on November 17, 2021, we celebrated Founders Day – the birth of our dearest fraternity, the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. This Founders Day marked the 110-year milestone of the greatest Fraternity in existence. Our motto, “Friendship Is Essential To The Soul,” is more than a notion. What started over a century ago with the vision of our Honorable Founders on the campus of Howard University continues to rise to newer heights as every round goes higher and higher. Veterans Day – we salute all our veterans and thank you for your tireless service to your country. We cannot begin to show or express our level of gratitude and appreciation for you. Additionally, during this time, we have seen our youth and college students return to school, facing the challenges and excitement of the new school year. They will meet these challenges face to face. On behalf of

the Brothers, we are praying for them to have an outstanding and successful academic school year. Our Voting, Registration, Education, and Mobilization (VREM) program was in full gear, as several chapters hosted numerous events, and Brothers served at the voting polls across the District for this significant election year. We continue to thank you for your willingness to serve at the polls. Your efforts are truly valuable to ensuring the community residents receive the assistance and information they need to make an informed decision about the electoral candidates and questions on the ballot. The Thanksgiving season was exceptional as Brothers across the District of Columbia and Virginia) conducted and collaborated with other community leaders and organizations to bless thousands of families with Thanksgiving meals. Hearts were blessed, and families were comforted this season as Omega Men serve with enthusiasm and in the true Omega spirit. May God continue to bless you, your families, the Third District, and the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Incorporated. Our prayer is for all to be comforted, knowing God is our protector. Please remain safe and healthy. The COVID virus continues to impact us all in one way or another. Please continue to be safe, especially with the onset of the new COVID Variants on the rise. Fraternally,

Brother Conrado B. Morgan Third District Representative

First Youth Leadership Conference (YLC)

T

he Third District of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., hosted its first Youth Leadership Conference (YLC) on September 11, 2021, using the virtual zoom platform. The event catered to students primarily from 8th grade to graduating seniors in Virginia and the District of Columbia. In attendance were 129 participants, with 86 being students. The theme of the conference was a focus on Teen Mental Health and the Seeds of Success. The YLC featured guest speakers, Brother Shawn Lacey, Third District First Vice District Representative, and Brother Joe Briggs Esq. of the NFL Players Association. The event kicked off with a prayer from Bishop Enoch Perry and opening remarks from Brother Conrado B. Morgan, Third District Representative. Brother Shawn Lacey began his career in education in 2000 and transitioned

to Loudon County Public Schools, Virginia, in 2010. He became the Principal at Leesburg Elementary in 2018. He spoke to students on the approaches for understanding youth mental health, checking on friends, and finding and locating available resources as applicable. Brother Lacey delivered an excellent oration to students and parents about common mental health concerns among youth. Additionally, Brother Lacey spoke on the need to reduce stigmas surrounding mental health in Black communities and communities of color, how to recognize signs and symp-

toms of mental health, and provided the audience with an action plan to help youth who may be facing a mental health problem. This included understanding the local and free resources available to parents, students, teachers, and friends. Brother Joe Briggs Esq. was a scholarship athlete at Texas Christian University, earning three varsity letters as a committed student leader on campus. After the completion of his externship as a US Senate Legal Fellow, Mr. Briggs was hired by the NFL Players Association to manage their Financial Programs Department. He is currently the Public Policy Counsel of the NFLPA and the first individual to lead the NFLPA Government Relations Department. Brother Briggs is also a professor at Georgetown University and often speaks on subjects ranging from politics to sports and everything in between. Brother Briggs spoke on the seeds of success. They included preparation, focus, hard work, and dedication. He reminded them that success is what happens when preparation meets opportunity. Additional emphasis was placed on knowing at their age or any age; there are opportunities around you. He excited the audience with his words and recapped his message by understanding that others may define success, but it can only be confirmed and felt by you.

WAS APPOINTED TO INTERIM CITY COUNCILOR FOR PETERSBURG IN WARD 7

rother Arnold Westbrook Jr (2-99-Delta Omega) was sworn in and appointed as the Interim City Councilor for Petersburg in Ward 7 on November 16th, 2021. The City of Petersburg City Council voted unanimously on Tuesday night to appoint Brother Westbrook as the interim councilor to succeed former councilor, John Hart. Brother Westbrook has an extensive background in education, as he is a Professor in Virginia State University’s English Department and works with students in the Honors College. Prior to working at Virginia State University, Brother Westbrook worked for the City of Petersburg, Virginia, where he instructed and mentored students in all aspects of life. Brother Westbrook’s talents stem from a line of educators, including his father, who was a professor at Virginia State University, and his mother taught at the City of Petersburg Public Schools for many years. Brother Westbrook acknowledges one of his greatest achievements is creating the #crownHIM initiative for Black Male empowerment. Brother Westbrook has also worked with at-risk youth through the Trio Upward Initiative since 2011. Brother Westbrook earned his master’s degree in American and English Literature at Virginia State University and a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management and Economics from Morehouse College. City of Petersburg Mayor Sam Parham credits Brother Westbrook with “having the experience, commitment, and passion needed as we move Petersburg forward.” Mayor Parham also Page 12

mentioned Brother Westbrook being a collaborator with a vision; born and raised in Petersburg, VA and remained involved in the community by mentoring our youth and serving as Chairman of the Social Services Advisory Board.” Brother Westbrook introduced himself as a member of First Baptist Church, Petersburg, VA, where he was baptized. He currently attends Good Shepherd Baptist Church in Petersburg, VA. Brother Westbrook identified three specific areas where he wants to be impactful - the first being education, which is nested with the fraternity’s cardinal principle of Scholarship. Brother Westbrook also wants to help residents get access to services they need for daily life. Finally, Brother Westbrook wants to push economic development amid Petersburg’s growing profile. Brother Westbrook has other objectives to accomplish during his tenure in the Petersburg, VA City Council. He stated during a recent interview, “I am committed to helping grow Petersburg and improve quality of life for all; to love something, as I do Petersburg, you must give of yourself and stay dedicated to community service and residents.” Brother Westbrook thanks Omega Psi Phi Fraternity and the Brothers of Delta Omega for helping him become the man he is today. He currently serves on multiple committees that focus on uplifting the community and teaching how to conduct professional and effective meetings. Brother Westbrook acknowledges that he is ready for his new position.

His reasoning is because of his faith in God, the development of strong values, positive moral compass from his family upbringing, and the friendship and interactions with the outstanding brotherhood of Omega. Brother Westbrook plans to continue to represent the brotherhood of Omega and serve the community to the best of his abilities.

NEW STEM DEPARTMENT

FOR STUDENTS RECEIVES THOUSANDS IN FINANCIAL UPLIFT

B

rother Malcolm Fox (initiated Alpha Chapter – Howard University) continues to live his creed as he was highlighted by the Chicago Tribune for his fundraising leadership efforts. “We take pride in using fashion & our brand’s platform to stress the importance of incorporating gratitude into your everyday life. I speak about how grateful I am for the endless opportunities & experiences I was afforded as a student at Phillips High School. I always pledged to pay it forward with “The P” initiative. My goal was to show my gratitude for the school by using Gratitude Chicago’s platform to fuel the fundraising efforts for the

school’s new STEM Department. ”– Malcolm Fox, Co-Founder of Gratitude Chicago & 2017 graduate of Bronzeville’s Wendell Phillips High School. In the Fall of 2021, Wendell Phillips High School, in Chicago’s Bronzeville neighborhood, launched a new STEM Department for students. The STEM Department will offer students four new curriculums: Aviation, Biomedical, Engineering, and Computer Science. The school has also secured partnerships with numerous organizations, such as Northwestern Medical, AeroStar Aviation, Turner Construction, Hitachi, & more! In addition to the added curriculums, the partnerships will also provide students with access opportunities into these industries, including site visits, mentoring, internships, externships, and more! Phillips High School was still in need of a few supplies & technologies to ensure a successful launch. Gratitude Chicago teamed up with the school to present to all “The P.” “The P” was an effort to raise money for the STEM Department through the sale of Phillips’ inspired t-shirts & hoodies with 100% of proceeds donated to Phillips’ STEM Department. Gratitude Chicago set a goal to donate $20,000 to the STEM Department & attemptPage 13

ed to complete that goal through corporate sponsorships, “The P Block Party,” and online orders. Gratitude Chicago hosted “The P Block Party” on October 9th at Phillips High School, which served as a Homecoming Pep Rally for Phillips’ Football Team, as well as a fundraiser for the STEM Department, as the shirts & hoodies were available for purchase. In addition to raising $5,000 at The P Block Party, Gratitude Chicago also secured an additional $11,000 from 25 corporate sponsors, such as Foot Locker Chicago, Chicago Cubs Charities, Rush Solutions, Chicago Scholars, and more. Through “The P” initiative and

Gratitude Chicago, $16,000 has been donated to the school thus far! Through donations, the Gratitude Chicago team gave away 300 t-shirts to Phillips High School students. “Our kids will now be able to go out and compete with a kid from any other zip code in the city and be able to go right into the workforce. It is truly inspiring when we have alumni such as Malcolm come back and want to make this so much more than just a neighborhood school! – Matthew Sullivan, Principal of Phillips High School

BRO. J. KEVIN MCINTYRE’S

SECURITY COMPANY FEATURED BY MARYLAND’S SMALL BUSINESS OFFICE

I

n October 2021, Maryland government officials contacted Brother J. Kevin McIntyre of Sigma Mu Mu Chapter, Third District of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc, about the progress of his company, Samson Protection Services. Brother McIntyre is also Omega’s Third District Counselor. He shared financial reports and projections. Additionally, he explained how a small business loan was the catalyst for his security company’s success. Maryland’s Small Business office immediately highlighted Brother McIntyre’s small company in a story on its website. (click here to view) In 2017, Brother McIntyre established Samson Protection Services, a property protection company. At that time, the company comprised little more than an idea, a business plan, and the drive to succeed. Although he was preparing the application for a small business loan, Brother McIntyre had immediate expenses (insurance, uniforms, advertising, wages, license fees, etc.). Like most new business start-up owners, he needed to reach into his personal savings and fund the company for several months. Brother McIntyre quickly generated enough business to cover operating costs. Because of the team’s lack of chemistry, the company was stagnant and sustained several company executive changes before settling on

Page 14

the right team. By winter 2018, the team was solidified. Based on the direction the company was headed and with the consensus of the new team, the decision was made to reset, buckle down, and guide the company to the next level. In January 2019, the company was generating very little revenue and was down to about three small contracts. However, Brother McIntyre stayed the course. In November 2019, after waiting two years, Brother McIntyre finally received a small business loan from the state of Maryland. He and

the team were able to move into an office, pay rent for one year, fund wages, buy new patrol cars, and market services. Perseverance came to the forefront; to Insure the loan, Maryland placed a lien on Brother McIntyre’s home and vehicles and required that he add the state as an additional insured party on his insurance policies. These requirements did not deter him. He was set on moving the company forward. Brother McIntyre provided what the state needed and didn’t look back.

Shortly after receiving business funding, company growth accelerated. In one year, Samson Protection Services’ revenue grew tenfold, and it continues to grow steadily today. Brother McIntyre states, “In summary, my brothers, if you take nothing from my words, please know that “When you are up against a trouble, meet it squarely face to face. Lift your chin and set your shoulders, plant your feet and take a brace.” In other words, SEE IT THROUGH!”

MESSAGE FROM THE

SECOND VICE DISTRICT REPRESENTATIVE Greetings Brothers of the Third District,

I

greet you in the name of the Supreme Basileus of the Universe. I am honored to serve as the Second Vice District Representative for the mighty Third District. On January 8th, the Third District held a successful undergraduate summit. The undergraduates had full participation from all active undergraduate chapters and received a wealth of knowledge that we can use to better our respective chapters. I want to thank Brother Conrado Morgan – District Representative, for his leadership and guidance in ensuring that the undergraduates had this opportunity. Additionally, thank you to the members of the District Council for their hard work in bringing this undergraduate summit to fruition, especially Brother District Keeper of Records and Seal Craig Spraggins, for the major role he played in our efforts. This past December, we had fourteen brothers graduate. We are encouraging these brothers to get active in their local graduate chapters. In coordination with Brother District Representative Conrado Morgan’s vision for the 3rd District. I have had ongoing communications with each active undergraduate chapter. This effort is to assess their individual needs and coordinate with their assigned graduate chapters, chapter advisors, and district committee chairmen to ensure that the Undergraduate chapters have all the support they need to provide service to the community and conduct MSP. The Undergraduates of the Third District have dedicated themselves this past semester to tackling the issue of food insecurity in their respective communities. I would like to recognize the Nu Psi Chapter at Virginia State University for their efforts in collecting over one hundred and fifty canned goods to be donated to underprivileged families in Petersburg, Virginia. The brothers of the Nu Psi Chapter have also had a major impact on

DANIEL DUNN their community volunteering with the Chesterfield County, Virginia food bank. I want to highlight the Phi Delta Chapter at Virginia Commonwealth University for their volunteer work with the Apostolic Church food pantry, feeding families in Richmond, Virginia. Lastly, I commend the Eta Lambda chapter at Virginia Tech University for their outstanding work feeding one hundred and eighty-one families with their third annual holiday meal box project. I’m excited to see what the undergraduates will do in the Spring semester as we look to accomplish even more impactful projects within our respective communities. The Undergraduates of the Third District have modeled the conduct, business, and service standards that every District should strive to achieve. We’re looking to carry on this momentum into the upcoming Spring semester and pass down our enthusiasm for the business of Omega to the brothers that will come after us. May God continue to bless you, your family, and the undergraduates of the Third District. I remain grateful to serve the Third District as the Second Vice District Representative. Fraternally,

Daniel Dunn Second Vice District Representative

O

n Saturday, November 13, 2021, The Lambda Omega Chapter, Third District of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Incorporated, along with The Hampton Roads Uplift Foundation, partnered with the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and the Eastern Shore, distributed 11,828 pounds of food, equaling 9,856 meals to families in need. Families began to line up as early as 7:45 am, two hours and fifteen minutes before the scheduled event.

The lines stretched from the entrance of the fraternity house to down the street and onto the main street. “Thank you so much for what you all are doing,” said one patron awaiting their ticket for the food distribution.

The scene looked like a “sea of purple” as the men of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Incorporated worked effortlessly and in sync to meet the needs of each patron as they drove up with their trunks open, waiting to be serviced.

Brother Faheem Boyd gave the patrons a ticket. He instructed them to move forward to an assembly line of Omega men, who filled their trunk spaces with food items such as turkeys, chicken, ribs, fresh vegetables, and a plethora of other dietary items. Page 25

The men of Omega were able to service a medical transport vehicle that allowed a disabled person in need to receive food for the holidays. Several news crews came out and documented the distribution and spoke with a few patrons and the chapter Basileus Brother Nick Evans. “We hope to address some of the food insecurities that we know exist in the Hampton Roads area,” Brother Evans said to the local media. The Lambda Omega Chapter hosts this food distribution yearly with other area graduate chapters to meet the needs of the community. “Service over everything” is a slogan you’ll see some Omega men wearing on their shirts as they give back.

BLOOD DRIVE SAVE LIVES

n September 12th, 2021, the Brothers of Omicron Kappa Kappa chapter, Third District of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., held another record-breaking mandated blood drive. The blood drive activity resulted in many potential donors for the Charles Drew Blood Drive being turned away. By the time they reached the midpoint of the drive, they reached maximum capacity at this year’s collection point at the BJ’s in Fairfax, Virginia, and surpassed their initial goal of 30 donors. At no point during the two-hour event was the INOVA bloodmobile empty. As an added incentive to donate,

Page 26

donors received Washington Nationals tickets. This year’s event was led by Brother Michael Welch (OKK ’16) and sponsored by the INOVA Hospital. Last year, the blood drive was postponed due to the pandemic, but they were definitely able to make up for lost time and persevered through many obstacles to make this year’s mandated program a massive success. The INOVA hospital was greatly impressed with the show of support and facilitation of the event. There is a strong possibility that another event will be held to support the Chapter’s health initiatives.

BROTHER ROSCOE NANCE HONORED BY OMICRON KAPPA KAPPA

B

rother Roscoe Nance was initiated in the Lambda Epsilon Chapter of the seventh district in 1968 and is a Charter member of Omicron Kappa Kappa Chapter, Third District of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. For the entire span of his walk in Omega and throughout the twenty-five-year existence of the OKK Chapter, Brother Roscoe Nance has played a momentous role in serving our communities and professionally as a sportswriter. With humble beginnings in Enterprise and Union Springs, Alabama, he attended Tuskegee University and was the sports editor of the campus digest. Brother Nance rose through the ranks of his career and was inducted into both the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Hall of Fame and the Black College Hall of Fame. He is the first inductee who didn’t attend an HBCU, nor coach or play sports. Brother Nance worked at USA Today for over thirty years and covered a myriad of sports, including the NBA, for fifteen seasons. The commissioner of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference

(MEAC) once stated that “He could write like Picasso could paint.” Brother Nance had a gift with the pen. Additionally, his editorial work was always spot on and captivating. Not only did he shine in the professional world, he also did great things philanthropically. He was a Boy Scout, a member of the ROTC, and later became a commissioned officer in the US Army. His vast community service has impacted homeless shelters, churches, and the hearts of many. The vast eulogies and commemorations during his passing serves as a testament to his selfless stature and kindheartedness with everyone who interacted with our Brother “Sco”, as he was affectionally called by his dear Brothers in Omega. To express our love and honor for our great brother, the OKK Chapter Brothers decided to start an annual golf tournament so that his name would continue to be remembered. On Monday, November 15, 2021, The Brethren of Omicron Kappa Kappa opened up with a 10am Tee Time in hon-

or of Brother Roscoe Nance. This classic was the chapter’s first annual golf tournament to commemorate his selfless and untiring work for our Dear Omega. What began with a chilly start ended up being warmed by the fond memories, kind words, and well-deserved trophies for those participating in the tournament held at Hidden Creek Golf and Country course in Herndon, Virginia. Several of Roscoe’s Brothers in the Fraternity and fellow Tuskegee Airmen came out to celebrate him. His wife gave a beautiful summation of how they initially met and fell in love. She also shared anecdotes about his life and times in the Fraternity. She wholeheartedly believed that he was looking down upon them and felt that this event was well put together. Additionally, he would be proud of everyone. Brother Roscoe Nance peacefully passed away at the age of 71 from cancer in his Virginia home. He is survived by his wife Willye, son Keith, two daughters Rahkia and Riva, three grandchildren, and a long list of individuals who still consider him to be a trailblazer, icon, and legend.

n August 30, 2021, the Brothers of the Omicron Omega Chapter, Third District of the Omega MENTORING THROUGH FOOTBALL Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., partnered with the players and fathers of the Hening Athletic Association to promote fatherhood through the game of football. The Omicron Omega Chapter hosted a “Father-Son Decal Ceremony.” The Brothers discussed the Cardinal Principles of Manhood, Scholarship, Perseverance, and Uplift during the ceremony. The fathers then told their sons what the principles meant to them personally and how they would support their son in each of the principles in the future. The culmination of the day was the ceremony where each father put their son’s helmet decals on. The ceremony represented the ongoing support that each father promised to give their son throughout the season and their life. The Brothers and other fathers stood in the gap for those players who did not have a father present. The brothers of the Omicron Omega Chapter understand that it takes a village to raise a child. The Brothers of Omicron Omega Chapter hope each player knows that they have the love and support they need from their community every time they look at their helmet.

At the end of the week’s events, Omega U accounted for 69 young men registered to start the 20212022 school year mentoring program. In discussions, parents and principals are hoping for in-person engagement for this school year to help provide guidance to these

young men in academics and manhood after a year at home with virtual learning. Even through the challenges of Covid-19, Omega U will

continue to provide mentorship to the students in Prince William County, VA. And continue teaching them to strive for more than the boundaries that are set around them.

P

i Lambda Lambda (PLL) chapter | Third District | Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. | Prince William County, Virginia – Amid the pandemic, Omega U (OU) and the Prince William County community has found ways to come together to keep our commitment to serving our schools and the students. During the latter part of August, on the 17 and 19, 2021, the Omega U Program partnered with the Prince William County Public Schools in three Back-toSchool Community Day Events at Unity Braxton Middle School, Graham Park Middle School, and Rippon Middle School. OU also partnered with PLL Social Action Committee to support local Prince William County political and communi-

ty leaders in a Backpack School Supply Distribution event at Neabsco Regional Park on Saturday, August 21, 2021. At the end of the week’s events, Omega U accounted for 69 young men registered to start the 2021-2022 school year mentoring program. On August 28th, 2021, the OU welcomed Mental Health Professional Brandon Simmons to provide a virtual motivational message to our youth on overcoming challenges to achieve desired successes in life. Mr. Simmons used life experience to encourage the youth not to give up on their pursuits. On September 18, 2021, the Omega U Program participated in community service Page 33

efforts at the Dumfries Slave Cemetery Cleanup. This cemetery was established in the 19th century for the local African American community, which includes graves of original pioneers of Dumfries and unmarked graves from the Civil War. In 2009, an archaeological study was conducted to delineate the cemetery, locating fieldstones (potential burial markers) and grave shafts indicating burials. In October, starting on the 7th, the Omega U Program hosted a virtual youth financial literacy presentation hosted by Apple Federal Credit Union. This program provided students with the ability to understand and effectively use various financial skills, including personal financial management, budgeting, investing in creating a foundation of their relationship with money, and its lifelong journey of learning beyond retirement. On October 16, 2021, the Omega U Program had a virtual SAT Prep/ ACT Prep presentation hosted by Huntington Learning Center. Huntington Learning Center’s goal for the students in this training was to teach them time management when taking the test and improve their scores. Also, encourage them on proper preparation to enhance their ability to succeed in school, be more confident, and become motivated learners for years to come. On October 28th, 2021, OU held a virtual Scholarship Workshop presentation for students and parents of Prince William County Schools. The PLL Scholarship Committee hosted the event. The Scholarship Committee formulated a road map for the students to follow so they have an opportunity to get into the colleges of their choosing. The Scholarship Workshop helps students by providing the motivation, books, and other resources needed to find and win scholarships to pay for college tuition. During the month of November, the Omega U Program had a STEAM course hosted by Code Wizards HQ. STEAM is a curriculum based on the idea of educating students in the industries of science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics in an interdisciplinary and applied approach. The program combines the benefits of teacher-led instruction, a student’s first approach, hands-on and project-based learning by using the online Page 34

classroom as an effective method for teaching students to online coding languages like Python, Java, HTML/CSS, and JavaScript. On November 3, 2021, the Omega U Program had a Teen Mental Health virtual presentation hosted by Mr. Jimez Alexander of Kaiser Permanente Medical Group to express the awareness and importance of mental health. Mr. Alexander started by defining Mental Health Literacy as the knowledge and understanding that helps us become responsible, effective, and successful in living full and healthy lives. His presentation explained mental health in four topic areas: 1. Good Mental Health, 2. Positive Mental Health, 3. Mental Well Being and 4. Subjective Well Being and Happiness. On November 21, 2021, the Omega U mentoring program partnered with Pi Lambda Lambda Chapter and NBC channel 4 of Washington D.C to distribute over 5000 turkeys on November 21st and 22nd at the 19th St Baptist Church in Washington D.C. Omega U will continue to provide mentorship to the students in Prince William County, teaching them to strive beyond the boundaries that are set around them.

PI LAMBDA LAMBDA’S 1ST YEARLONG VIRTUAL BLOOD DONATION CAMPAIGN

P

i Lambda Lambda (PLL) Chapter, Third District of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., Prince William County, Virginia – On October 31, 2021, the PLL Health Initiatives Committee completed its first-ever yearlong virtual blood drive registration & donation campaign. As January was Blood Donor Month, the Health Initiatives Committee pushed chapter blood donations by highlighting the efforts of Dr. Charles R. Drew and his distinction as the father of blood banking. The push for blood donations was critical to support hospitals and blood banking organizations. There was a nationwide shortage of blood and blood platelets this summer – contributions were down to the Red Cross this summer about 10% in June, resulting in 50,000 fewer donations than expected. Those shortages continued into September. Donations by Brother Charles Hunter (Chapter Vice Basileus), Brother Darnell Dennis (Chapter Editor), Brother Rodney Downey, Brother Victor Hinton, and Brother Johnathan Thomas were made to local Red Cross drives through the Chapter’s first virtual blood drive via the Red Cross “Sleeves-Up” campaign in Pi Lambda Lambda’s efforts of the Dr. Charles Drew Virtual Blood Drive.

Raising funds to support a cure for diabetes has been a long-time event for the Committee and the Chapter. As a precaution for COVID-19, this is the second year that the American Diabetes Association’s event went virtual. Despite not having a locally centralized event, the Chapter’s

fund-raising effort was the best it had been in recent years as it surpassed its $5,000 goal and raised more than $7,600 toward that effort for

finding a cure for diabetes. On a pleasant, sunny Saturday morning, just over 20 Brothers and friends of the Chapter gathered at OcPage 35

coquan Park to walk on behalf of those living with diabetes and the ADA’s effort to find a cure. Brother Stephen Blakely, who has led the Chapter team and fund-raising drive for several years, relayed how pleased he was with this year’s effort as both the fund-raising effort and in-person support were growing and getting bigger year by year. The team’s deputy leader, Brother Anthony White, said that based on the committee’s success this year, the team may push the envelope on its fund-raising goal next year as they anticipate the event returning to its live in-person format.

November, the Chapter conducted a mentoring session at John Lewis High School where 20 students received invaluable information on financial literacy. That same morning, brothers also participated in the chapter’s Reading for Success program at Riverside Elementary where they read and provided books and backpacks to six third grade classes. On November 20, 2021, from 10am-12pm, the Brothers of the PsiAA chapter gathered to celebrate the individual and collective accomplishments from Omega Year 2020-2021. FATHERHOOD INITIATIVE BACK TO SCHOOL FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL CELEBRATION

n expected fashion, the Brothers of Psi Alpha Alpha Chapter (PsiAA), Third District, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. realized the true importance of the first “First Day of School” in over a year. At 8am on Monday, August 23, 2021, the chapter’s group chat began blowing up as Brothers started posting pictures of their excited kids on their way to school. Chapter members also felt the excitement as they watched how thankful their kids were to be going back to school in person for the first time in over 18 months. Assistant Keeper of Records and Seal Brother Hector Sheppard understands the critical nature of social interaction and community, “It’s supposed to be better for learning. Many kids were getting depressed at home. Additionally, many good students were failing in this new virtual educational environment.” Vice Basileus Brother Myron McDaniels, whose son Ian is enPage 38

tering his freshman year at Cornell University, echoed those sentiments, “It is important for students to physically attend school to build and continue to build relationships with their peers and academic professionals.” PsiAA Reclamation and Retention Chairman Brother Tony Wells returned from a business trip just in time for the first day. He was extremely complimentary of the hard-working teachers and administrators who are also in

a transitioning period. “The dedicated educators of the local school districts are great at pulling the best out of our committed students and being in person helps with the needed socialization of our children,” said Brother Wells. “My oldest daughter is a senior in high school, and she spent the past two academic years watching the senior classes miss their senior activities, including prom, and participate in virtual graduations. She got her vaccinations as soon as they opened it for her age

group in Fairfax County to make sure she was doing her part,” said James Cherry, Psi Alpha Alpha Fatherhood Initiative Chairman. Whether it is the first day of elementary school, senior year of high school, or freshman year of college, the Brothers of Psi Alpha Alpha captured the unadulterated joy their kids felt on getting back into the physical classroom.

The Advancing Health Literacy (AHL) to Enhance Equitable Community Responses to COVID-19 initiative is part of the Biden/Harris Administration’s National Strategy for the COVID-19 Response and Pandemic Preparedness. “The Advancing Health Literacy initiative is a vital part of the HHS efforts to help communities hardest hit by the pandemic access and understand COVID-related information,” said Assistant Secretary for Health, Dr. Rachel L. Levine, M.D. “This funding, and the partnerships with local and community entities across the country, will help our national efforts to continue to tackle health disparities surrounding COVID-19 vaccination, testing, and treatment.” Health literacy is a person’s ability to find, understand and use information and services to help them make health-related decisions for themselves and others. lexandria Va.- Heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and obesity are all health issues that affect the black community at a high level. On October 30, 2021, the Brothers of Psi Nu Chapter, Third District of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., decided to join the cause in preventing these problems by hosting its “Road to 50th Anniversary-Inaugural Virtual 5k” event. To encourage Brothers, friends, and family to be more active, Psi Nu created this event to promote health and wellness in a community environment. The event drew 81 participants and raised $4000 to go

towards Psi Nu’s Achievement Week programs and other programs and initiatives. “Running was always a way for me to clear my mind,” stated event co-creator

Brother Corey Griddine (Psi Nu ’20). “If not participating in some type of physical endurance had an effect on myself, I knew it had to be affecting others,” Brother Griddine said. As a result, while walking the Woodrow Wilson Bridge and discussing fundraising ideas with his line brother and co-creator, Brother Dennis Craig II (Psi Nu ’20), the Virtual 5k was born. Each participant was issued a printable race bib and ran or walked a minimum of 3.1 miles (5km). Distances and times were recorded via each participant’s fitness app of choice and sent to the event’s webpage, along with photos and words of encouragement.

he Third District of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Incorporated instituted the weekly Third District Worship & Prayer services on Sunday nights at 1911, starting in April 2020. Initially, the prayer services were designed as a prayer service for COVID-19 pandemic relief. The prayer service mission developed into opportunities for fellowship and celebration across the District and beyond. Over the past year, the Third District Worship and Prayer service has combined powerful words of uplift, great music, fervent prayers, and fellowship in True Omega fashion. This event is open to Brothers of Omega, family, and friends alike. We have enjoyed special services that celebrated Omega Legacy on Father’s Day, Service Members on Veterans Day, and couples married for more than 50 years on Valentine’s Day, with two of our celebrants sharing 68 year partnerships. We have showcased the future leadership of the Fraternity, and nation, with student led services commemorating HBCU Homecoming, College Graduation, and Mother’s Day. Both local, regional, and national representatives of the National Pan-Hellenic Council have participated along with every member of our Supreme Council. The Third District Worship & Prayer Service facilitated by Third District Chaplain Rev. Courtenay L. Miller, under the leadership of District Representative Brother Conrado B. Morgan. This service has provided a forum for uplift in an uncertain and unsteady time. while also providing a vehicle for reconnection and connection to participants across the county and indeed around the globe. The Third District acknowledges the contributions of the many worship leaders, musicians, and the automation team for their contribution to this great worship and friendship experience.

MAKING THE GOLD BOOTS MEAN SOMETHING PSI NU HOSTS CHRISTIAN MANHOOD IN THE 21ST CENTURY SYMPOSIUM

A

lexandria, VA – In today’s secular society, manhood is usually equated to aggression, misogyny, lack of emotion, and physical strength, among other negative connotations. However, a distinguished panel of Omega men had something different to say. On November 16, 2021, the Brothers of Psi Nu Chapter, Third District, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., in conjunction with the Fraternity’s Annual Achievement Week, held a virtual symposium entitled “Christian Manhood in the 21st Century. Under the exemplary leadership of Brother Kevin Bates and with the assistance of Brothers Marvin Chambers and Christopher Powell, this program’s primary goal was to answer the question, “What factors enable and inhibit the Christian Black man from effectively engaging and impacting our communities?” This engaging conversation was moderated by Brother Dr. Charles Corprew III, host and executive producer of the “What’s Your Revolution?” podcast. The esteemed panel included: Brother Rev. Courtenay Miller (Third District Chaplain), Brother Dr. Julius Reynolds, Brother Eric Smith, Brother Zack Morse II, and Brother Page 46

Rev. Dr. Taft Quincey Heatley, Lead Pastor of Alexandria’s Shiloh Baptist Church. Dr. Corprew initiated the symposium with a moving story of how his father, Brother Charles Corprew Jr., exemplified Christian Manhood by suspending his doctoral studies to be more present for a young Charles III. In speaking about his father, Dr. Corprew stated, “It was his sacrifice that allowed me to have this PhD today. When I think about Christian manhood, and I think about manhood and masculinity, I think about the sacrifices that my father made.” In speaking on his definition of healthy masculinity, Dr. Reynolds stated,” It would involve me being a good father, a good husband, and then from there being an effective leader in my community.” He also emphasized a healthy respect for women and humanity, which he noted, “…that’s one thing that has gone missing particularly in this time and age is a healthy respect for compassion and humanity for mankind.” Regarding manhood and being a man of Omega, Chaplain Miller addressed the notion

of “toxic masculinity” and stated, “The repression of our feelings has led to aggressive behavior.” While noting the positive aspects of aggression, i.e., perseverance and “seeing it through,” he emphasized the negative side currently being captured in social media. Chaplain Miller encouraged the men of Omega to post images depicting compassion, love, and service to quell the negative depiction of Omega men often displayed on social media. Brother Smith viewed manhood as demonstrating humility while helping others. He discussed the importance of helping marginalized communities through utilizing inner strength. He said, “I can go and lift weights all day to look muscular. However, is that going to help me help the person who is hungry, the person who needs clothing?” Brother Dr. Heatley discussed the dehumanization of the black community to include that of the black church. “We have to fight within the confines of an American Christianity to help people understand what true Christianity is,” he said. As a spiritual leader, he cited the importance of demystifying “The notions of what was taught to us about Christianity and then now see the revelation so we can live the true Christianity so that the gos-

pel can travel throughout the world…” in an effort to learn to love ourselves and ultimately love our neighbors as ourselves. Brother Morse discussed the Fraternity’s responsibilities from a chapter level. He emphasized “humble leadership” and the grass-root level work of getting directly involved with the local community and local churches. He also noted the importance of consistent political involvement. “I think the sphere of influence in terms of politics is very important,” he said. Humility, compassion, sensitivity, emotion, and brokenness are not often terms applied to a secularized version of manhood. However, according to the prestigious panel, the attributes mentioned should be considered, especially in terms of Christian manhood and thus to Omega. While so many topics were discussed during this symposium, many topics remained. Brother Kevin Bates stated, “Similar to the aim of our founders, Psi Nu is currently looking to further the discussion by formulating more talks creating effective strategies that engage Christian Black men, our youth, and women so our communities can realize lasting change.”

ica, in 2019, the overall food insecurity rate (the state of being without reliable access to a sufficient quantity of affordable, nutritious food) in the city of Alexandria was 8.4%, with a 2021 projection of 10.4%. That equates to 13,300 food-insecure citizens in 2019 and a projected 16,655 in 2021. Recognizing the gravity of this matter, the Brothers of Psi Nu decided to combat it actively. and Drop” process provided an efficient and safe environment for all the gracious donors.

The drive was held at “Hopkins House.” Chief Operations Officer Brother Garvey Wright (Nu Psi ’87) graciously allowed the use of their parking lot. A total of 894 pounds (745 meals per industry standards) of food was collected and transported to the ALIVE! Food pantry. Psi Nu also received $936 in financial donations, which went to the

ALIVE food pantry. Pleasantly surprised by the van full of food collected, representatives of ALIVE expressed their sincerest gratitude. n November 20, 2021, the Brothers of Sigma Mu Mu Chapter, Third District of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., partnered with Christ Redeemer Church in Sterling, VA, for its annual Thanksgiving food giveaway. Sigma Mu Mu’s partnership with the church was formed over six years ago and continues to be a focus of the chapter’s Social Action Committee. The Brothers helped direct parking lot traffic and provided the manpower needed to load boxes of food into family vehicles. This volunteer service helped ensure event safety and assisted in Thanksgiving food delivery to needy families in the community. With the help of Sigma Mu Mu, Christ Redeemer Church was able to safely deliver food to more families than would have been possible otherwise. Sigma Mu Mu looks forward to partnering with Christ Redeemer Church for its annual Christmas food and toy distribution effort.

SIGMA MU MU CHAPTER’S DR. CHARLES R. DREW BLOOD DRIVE REPLENISHES LOCAL BLOOD SUPPLY

S

terling, VA - On November 6, 2021, Sigma Mu Mu Chapter, Third District of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., began its Achievement Week activities with a Dr. Charles R. Drew Blood Drive. The event was held at the Inova Dulles Blood Donor Center in Sterling. All slots during the drive were filled. Thanks to the efforts of the Brothers, their families, members of the NAACP, and the local community, this life-saving endeavor was a success. Eighteen (18) units of whole blood and one (1) unit of platelets were donated during the blood drive. According to the American Red Cross, whole blood is the most flexible type of donation. Whole blood can be transfused in its original form or used to help multiple people when separated into its specific components of red cells, plasma, and platelets. Whole blood is frequently given to trauma patients and people undergoing surgery. The American Red Cross website notes that the organization is experiencing the worst blood shortage in over a decade. The dangerously low blood supply levels have forced some hospitals to defer patients from major surgery, including organ transplants. In light of the blood shortage, Sigma Mu Mu’s effort was incredibly impactful and appreciated. After the event, the Inova Blood Donor Center coordinator, Mr. Gino Pascual, expressed his gratitude to Sigma Mu Mu for going above and beyond expectations for the blood drive effort.

HEADLINE SIGMA MU MU CHAPTER’S 2021 VIRTUAL ACHIEVEMENT WEEK BRUNCH

shburn, VA - On November 14, 2021, the Brothers of Sigma Mu Mu Chapter, Third District of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., held their virtual Achievement Week Awards Brunch. The brunch recognized exceptional Brothers and community leaders who served tirelessly during the past Omega year. Notable Brothers in attendance were: James Clyburn – South Carolina Congressman and U.S. House of Representatives Majority Whip; Dr. Andrew Ray – former Grand Basileus; Ricky Lewis – 1st Vice Grand Basileus; Conrado B. Morgan – 3rd District Representative; and other District Officers. Their participation made the program the signature event among Sigma Mu Mu’s Achievement Week celebration and community service activities. Other activities

included the chapter’s annual High School Essay Contest in October, its Dr. Charles R. Drew Blood Drive – held at the Inova Blood Donor Center in Sterling, VA on November 6, and the Tuscarora High School Virtual HBCU College Showcase on November 17. Additionally, there was an Adopt-a-Highway community service project, a Christ Redeemer Church Food Drive in Sterling, VA on November 20, and a chapter worship service at The Temple of Healing Waters Church in Dulles, VA on November 21. Sigma Mu Mu Chapter’s brotherhood and commitment to the community were on full display as the Brothers successfully executed the events under the leadership of Brother Basileus James Banks and Achievement Week Chairman, Brother Van Corbin. Page 51

While Sigma Mu Mu’s Achievement Week observance included the uplifting community service activities, the Awards Brunch was the most highly anticipated activity once Brother Clyburn was confirmed as the keynote speaker. Excitement and anticipation grew when Brothers learned that former Grand Basileus Dr. Andrew Ray also planned to speak during the program. These Omega giants did not disappoint! During his remarks, Dr. Ray commented on the relevance of the Achievement Week theme, “Omega Men Protecting Life and Liberty,” observing that Omega men always lead the way. He used the sports analogy of a relay race baton handoff to illustrate the importance of perfecting the handoff in life: if the handoff is botched in a race, the relay team loses the race; similarly, if Omega men and other responsible citizens fumble the handoff in life (e.g., fail to pass along meaningful values and traditions), precious lives are lost to the ills of society such as gun violence, drug addiction, and lack of education, among others. Brother Ray stressed the need to hand off vision informed by hindsight (history), insight (the present), and foresight (the future). The former Grand Basileus’ remarks provided a nice segue to Brother Clyburn’s keynote speech. Brother Clyburn commented that he studies and uses history as a guide, emphasizing the need for Omega men and African Americans, in general, to stay vigilant in protecting rights and institutions. He cited existential threats to HBCUs and attacks on democracy as examples of why vigilance is needed. To underscore the importance of preserving the integrity of HBCUs, Brother Clyburn shared a Page 52

conversation he had with Brother Ronald McNair prior to his untimely death in the Space Shuttle Challenger accident. Brother McNair observed that the PhD degree he earned from MIT always seemed to get highlighted during public introductions. Still, Brother McNair said, it was his North Carolina A&T experience that enabled him to achieve. Brother Clyburn concluded his keynote message by encouraging everyone to participate in the democratic process and treat each other with respect. He noted that friendship cannot exist without trust, honor, and respect. Another program highlight was the introduction of Sigma Mu Mu’s High School Essay Contest winner, Mr. Ryan Myers, who read his winning essay to the program attendees. Additionally, the chapter Achievement Week award winners were announced. Additionally, the former Grand Basileus installed the newly elected chapter officers. Sigma Mu Mu Chapter award recipients were Mr. Brian Mitchell (Citizen of the Year); The Burg Family (Community Partner of the Year); Brother Derrick Clarke (Superior Service Award); Brother Curtis Hollie, Jr. (Colonel Charles Young Military Leadership Award); Brother Robert Myles, Jr. (Founders Lifetime Achievement Award); and Brother Van Corbin (Omega Man of the Year). The newly elected Sigma Mu Mu Chapter officers are Brother James Banks (Basileus), Brother Reginald Parker (Vice Basileus), Brother Alaric Corbin (Keeper of Records and Seal), Brother Rayfus Gary (Keeper of Finance), Brother Brian Johnson (Chapter Reporter), Brother Kevin Wiggs (Parliamentarian), and Brother Robert Myles, Jr. (Immediate Past Basileus).

ZETA IOTA CHAPTER SUPPORTS “THANKSGIVING TO GO”

P

ortsmouth, Virginia. On November 23, 2021, the Brothers of the Zeta Iota Chapter, Third District of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., supported the “Thanksgiving To Go” event at Mt. Olivet Baptist church and LEVOC Family Services. The Brothers were overwhelmed to see the happiness and joy this event brought to the community. There were over 150 meals distributed to the displaced citizens and senior residents in the city of Portsmouth. Citizens who were unable to attend because of transportation restrictions had meals delivered to them via members of the Chapter. This annual event will occur each year on the Tuesday prior to Thanksgiving. This Thanksgiving meals distribution is one of several holiday events that fall under the Chapter’s Social Action programs. The Chapter’s Ques Care encompasses annual holiday meals for the homeless and disadvantaged (Thanksgiving to Go), “Coats for A Cause” Winter Coat Drive, and Project BLESS (Blankets for the Homeless). All the donations and time helped to make this event successful again this year. There also was a special guest appearance from Portsmouth’s very own Olympic Gold medalist Lashawn Merritt.

Make no mistake retention and reclamation is the duty of every Brother and it is going to require some effort from all of you. Did you know that only 1 out of every 5 Brothers pay dues beyond their Initiation fees? Many Brothers claim to love our Fraternity, still participate in social Omega activities, and “represent” Omega through paraphernalia, friendships, etc. yet are not active and financial with their local chapter. Essentially these Brothers are pulling out all of the things that they like about Omega and abandoning the rest. Why not take advantage of your FULL Omega?
