OVERVIEW

SOUTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY STUDENT CENTER

OVERVIEW // PROJECT DESCRIPTION SOUTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY, FOUNDED IN 1896 AS A LAND-GRANT AGRICULTURE AND MECHANICAL ENGINEERING COLLEGE, HAS EVOLVED OVER THE YEARS TO BECOME A THRIVING RESEARCH INSTITUTE WITH OVER 4,000 STUDENTS. THE UNIVERSITY IS STEEPED IN RICH CULTURE AND HISTORY, AND IS CURRENTLY LOOKING TO ENRICH ITS CAMPUS, LOCATED IN ORANGEBURG, SC. THE NEED HAS ARISEN FOR A NEW OR IMPROVED STUDENT CENTER, AS THE CURRENT FACILITY STRUGGLES SPATIALLY AND PROGRAMATICALLY TO FULLY ENGAGE STUDENT RECREATION AND INTERACTION. THE CREATION OF A NEW 'COMMON GROUND' FOR THE STUDENT AND FACULTY OF SCSU WILL PROVIDE A HUB OF ACTIVITY AS WELL AS ACTIVATING THE CENTRAL CORE OF THE CAMPUS.

CONCEPT

SOUTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY STUDENT CENTER



CONCEPT // PREMISE A STUDENT CENTER ACCOMODATES THE STUDENTS AND FACULTY OF THE UNIVERSITY, AS WELL AS THE RESIDENTS OF THE SURROUNDING COMMUNITY. IT INVOLVES DIVERSE PROGRAM SUCH AS SOCIAL GATHERING SPACES AND PRIVATE STUDY AREAS. RATHER THAN SEPARATING THESE ELEMENTS, THE CONCEPT OF THIS BUILDING FOCUSES ON THE LAYERING OF THESE VARIED DIVERSE SPACES PRESENT IN THE STUDENT CENTER, CREATING AN OVERLAPPING MULTIDIMENSIONAL COLLAGE IN BUILDING FORM. WITHIN THIS COLLAGE, THE EMERGENCE OF VISUAL AND AUDITORY STRATA PROVIDES AN ADDITIONAL DEPTH TO THE LAYERING OF SPACE.

 CASTREJON + WILLIAMS // CLEMSON UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE

CONCEPT // FORM + PROGRAM

OVERLAPPING VOLUMES

EXTRACTING THE VOID

THE IDEA OF A COLLAGE MATERIALIZES IN THE FORM OF THREE OVERLAPPING VOLUMES, WHICH ROTATE VERTICALLY BASED ON THE AXES OF THE SITE.

WHERE THESE VOLUMES OVERLAP, THE INTERSECTING SPACES ARE EXTRACTED. VOIDS ARE CREATED, LEAVING HOLLOW SPACES BETWEEN THE THREE VOLUMES.

 CASTREJON + WILLIAMS // CLEMSON UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE

CIRCULATION SPINE

PROGRAM

CONNECTING THESE THREE VOLUMES THROUGH THE VOIDS IS A CIRCULATION SPINE THAT TAKES THE USERS THROUGH THE STUDENT CENTER VIA A SERIES OF RAMPS, STEPS, AND PLATFORMS.

THE DIVISION OF PROGRAM THROUGHOUT THE BUILDING IS DISPERSED THROUGH THE VOLUMES, BASED ON ACTIVITY AND SOUND LEVELS, STARTING AT THE LOUDEST LOWER LEVEL AND TRANSITIONING TO THE QUIET UPPER LEVEL.

SOUTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY STUDENT CENTER



CONCEPT // SITE DRIVERS THE THREE ROTATING VOLUMES THAT COMPRISE THE STUDENT CENTER TAKE THEIR ALIGNMENT FROM THE AXES OF THE EXISTING SITE, AS WELL AS THE STRATIFICATION OF PROGRAM. THE SOCIAL VOLUME IS ALIGNED WITH DUKE'S PLAZA, AN EXISTING POPULAR GATHERING AREA FOR STUDENTS, AND RELATES TO THE MORE RESIDENTIAL SIDE OF CAMPUS. THE PUBLIC VOLUME IS ALIGNED WITH GEATHERS STREET, THE MAIN VEHICLE ROAD ACESS TO THE SITE. THE ACADEMIC VOLUME IS ALIGNED WITH DAVIS HALL ACROSS GEATHERS STREET AND RELATES TO THE ACADEMIC SIDE OF CAMPUS.

 CASTREJON + WILLIAMS // CLEMSON UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE

SOUTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY STUDENT CENTER



CONCEPT // CIRCULATION SPINE THE MAIN CIRCULATION OF THE BUILDING CONNECTS EACH OF THE VOLUMES THROUGH THE VOIDS THROUGH A SERIES OF PLATFORMS, PROMOTING THE CONCEPT OF VISUAL LAYERS. NOT ONLY DOES THE CIRCULATION SPINE CONNECT THE THREE VOLUMES, BUT IT BECOMES A PROGRAMMATIC ELEMENT OF ITS OWN. AS THE TRAJECTORY OF THE CIRCULATION FOLDS AND TURNS THROUGHOUT THE DIFFERENT AREAS OF THE BUILDING, LOUNGE SPACES GROW OFF OF THIS SPINE THAT CORRELATE TO THE PROGRAM OF EACH VOLUME.

PROPOSAL // SITE ALL OF THE SITE INTERVENTIONS WERE MEANT TO INCREASE THE CENTRALITY OF THE STUDENT CENTER SITE TO THE CAMPUS OF SCSU, BY PROMOTING PEDESTRIAN TRAFFIC, SLOWING VEHICULAR TRAFFIC, AND GENERALLY CREATING A VARIETY OF AREAS CONDUCIVE TO INTERACTIONS BETWEEN ALL OF THE USERS. MULTIPLE AREAS OF TREE COVERAGE ANSWER THE LACK OF SHADED AREAS ON CAMPUS, WHILE STILL LEAVING OPEN HARDSCAPED AND SOFTSCAPED AREAS FOR A VARIETY OF STUDENT GATHERINGS. THE RELOCATION OF THE MEMORIAL TO THE ORANGEBURG MASSACRE TO THE WEST CORNER OF THE SITE SERVES TO BRING THE THREE MOST CULTURAL AND HISTORIC MONUMENTS IMPORTANT TO SCSU TOGETHER ON ONE SITE.

RESOLUTION // STRUCTURAL SYSTEM THE STRUCTURAL SYSTEM USED WAS MEANT TO EMPHASIZE THE IDEA OF VISABILITY THROUGH AND WITHIN THE BUILDING. THEREFORE, A FULLY EXPOSED STEEL STRUCTURE WAS USED TO CREATE THE APPEARANCE OF A SKELETON THAT THE FACADE IS DRAPED OVER. THE MOSTLY TRANSPARENT FACADE ALLOWS THE STRUCTURE TO BE FULLY VISIBILE IN THE DAY WHILE STILL SHINING THROUGH AT NIGHT.

RESOLUTION // MECHANICAL SYSTEM A VAV-ALL AIR SYSTEM WAS CHOSEN AS THE MAIN MECHANICAL SUPPLY FOR THE STUDENT CENTER. THIS SYSTEM ALLOWS THE GREATEST AMOUNT OF VARIABILITY OF AIRFLOW THROUGH THE BUILDING TO ACCOMODATE THE WIDE VARIETY OF PROGRAM PRESENT IN THE STUDENT CENTER, AS WELL AS OFFERING COST EFFICIENCY AND LOW MAINTENENCE.

48,000 CFM AIR VOLUME 30 SF MAIN SUPPLY 50 SF BRANCH SUPPLY 1500 SF FAN ROOMS 150 SF FRESH AIR LOUVRES 100 SF EXHAUST LOUVRES

A CONTINUOUS VERTICAL CHASE THROUGH THE BUILDING CORE FACILITATES THE MAIN VERTICAL DISTRIBUTION OF SUPPLY AND RETURN TO AND FROM THE MECHANICAL ROOM.

RESOLUTION // PASSIVE DESIGN IN ADDITION TO THE FORCED AIR MECHANICAL SYSTEM, A NUMBER OF PASSIVE DESIGN STRATEGIES WERE UTILIZED IN THE BUILDING. SINCE THE CLIMATE IN ORANGEBURG IS EXTREMELY HOT, THE MAIN CONCERN WAS PROTECTING FROM THE HEAT WHILE STILL PROVIDING PLENTY OF NATURAL LIGHTING AND VENTILATION. THE GROUND LEVEL GLAZING WALLS ALLOW PLENTIFUL NATURAL LIGHTING WHILE STRIPS OF FRITTED GLAZING REFLECT MUCH OF THE HEAT. A STRIP OF OPERABLE WINDOWS IN THIS GLAZING WALL ALLOWS FOR CROSS VENTILATION, AS WELL AS OPERABLE SKYLIGHTS IN THE TOP VOLUME THAT ALLOW FOR STACK VENTILATION.

 CASTREJON + WILLIAMS // CLEMSON UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE

SPECIFICALLY PLACED OPERABLE PANELS ON THE METAL MESH OFFER UNOBSTRUCTED VIEWS, WHILE THE MESH ITSELF OFFERS A SLIGHTLY MORE OPAQUE VIEW TO THE SURROUNDINGS. THE METAL MESH OVER THE STOREFRONT GLAZING ALLOWS NATURAL DAYLIGHT INTO THE BUILDING WHILE STILL APPEARING AS A SOLID VOLUME FROM THE EXTERIOR. OPERABLE WINDOWS IN THE STOREFRONT GLAZING SYSTEM ALLOW NATURAL VENTILATION.

PERMEABLE PAVERS ON THE BALCONY ABSORB RAINWATER, WITH A SIPHONIC DRAINAGE SYSTEM WHICH DIRECTS THE WATER INTO A SINGLE DOWNSPOUT. PLANTED VEGETATION CYCLES THE AIR WITHIN THE BUILDING TO CONTINUE THE MOVEMENT OF FRESH AND HEALTHY AIR.

SOUTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY STUDENT CENTER



RESOLUTION // FACADE TO CONVEY THE IMAGE OF A SOLID TOP VOLUME RESTING ON THE LIGHT TRANSPARENT GROUND LEVEL VOLUME WHILE STILL ALLOWING SUNLIGHT AND VENTILATION INTO THE SPACES, A PERFORATED METAL PANEL SYSTEM WAS USED FOR THE SKIN OF THE TOP VOLUME. THESE PERFORATIONS, WORKING WITH AN INNER STOREFRONT SYSTEM, ALLOW FOR SUFFICIENT BRIGHTENING OF THE SPACES WHILE APPEARING SOLID FROM THE EXTERIOR.
