Balloon Match Up! Draw a line from each balloon on the left to its match on the right!
Did you know that the first successful human flight was made in a hot air balloon? In 1783, two French brothers by the name of Montgolfier created a giant linen and paper balloon. In November of that year, they filled it with hot air and sent two friends into the sky above Paris. The balloon 9 is reported to have traveled 5 miles. 9

etting your kids to open up to you isn’t always easy. Let’s face it, your child is not likely to jump in the car and tell you, “I had a bad day. My feelings were hurt when no one sat by me at lunch.” More than likely, you’ll notice your child’s mood & have to piece together information or simply take your best guess! But with some well thought-out strategies, you may just get your child talking! One thing to remember is that children often need downtime after an intense day at school. Try not to bombard them with questions the minute they walk in the door. Let them relax a little before fielding questions! Also, boys tend to open up more when they’re sitting beside you rather than face-to-face. Car rides can provide you with the perfect setting! One way to encourage communication is to start doing things they like. If your daughter enjoys cooking, let her help you make dinner. If your son likes basketball, go out & shoot hoops with him. When you’re engaged in an activity with your children, they are more likely to talk with you. It doesn’t all have to be heavy conversation, but you can slip in some important topics while you’re having fun together! Sometimes you may be busy when your child approaches you. DO NOT MISS THESE OPPORTUNITIES! Household chores & phone calls can wait. You’ve got to be available if your child comes to you to talk. Ask specific, open-ended questions, and don’t dismiss what they’re saying. What they tell you may not seem like a big deal to a parent, but you never know what weighs on the mind of a child. One last suggestion to find out what’s going on with your child is simple…car pool! You won’t believe how much you’ll hear as children are gabbing in the back seat. They’ll be much less inhibited with a friend along and you’ll get a better insight into their lives. As with any relationship, don’t push too hard. Be patient, be available, be creative… and hopefully you’ll have great conversations with your child!

Color the Eggs!
OOPS! The bunny on the right forgot to color some of his eggs. Use your crayons or markers and color the white eggs on the right the same color as the eggs in the same places on the left.
Underground Magic! Seeds might seem to be dead, but in fact they are only waiting patiently for water and sunlight. When seeds have water, sunlight and air, they will begin to germinate, or "begin to grow."
The seed is planted and begins to soak up water from the soil.
Roots begin to grow down into the soil and take in food for the plant.
The stem pushes up through the soil. The seed leaves uncurl and begin to gather the sun’s energy.
Soon, real leaves appear and make food for the plant to continue to grow.
The plant grows, and when it’s big enough will produce more beans for us to eat and plant when we need them. 19 19

t is widely understood that a nutritious diet has a positive impact on the physical health of a child. Unfortunately, we do not always understand its connection to a child’s behavior and emotional and mental health. Having healthy meals, snacks and water throughout the day can improve a child’s behavior, learning and mood. Research has shown that children who eat a healthy breakfast consistently score better on standardized tests, have better behavior and show less symptoms of hyperactivity than children who do not eat breakfast. However, children who eat high sugar items for breakfast have the opposite results with lower test scores, more behavior problems and a mid morning drop in blood sugar resulting in difficulty concentrating and staying awake. Healthy snacks are also important. When a child comes home from school, a healthy snack containing little or no sugar and some type of protein such as cheese, nuts or peanut butter can energize a child’s body and mind, helping them concentrate on homework or actively participate in after school activities. It is amazing what a healthy snack with a glass of milk or water can do for a child’s behavioral and emotional state. However, sugary snacks in the afternoon are more likely to produce behavior problems and moodiness in the early evening hours just as parents are trying to get children settled for bed. Remember, children are more likely to adopt healthy eating habits if parents model this behavior in a realistic way. Being rigid about healthy eating may lead to splurging. It is also important not to overlook water as part of nutrition. What’s the secret to getting a child to drink water? Start young, and be consistent in presenting water more often than juice. Children will develop a taste for it, and their body will produce a craving for it.

Why is everyone so tired on April 1st? They just finished a 31 day March!
All birds hatch from eggs that are laid by the mother bird. Some birds lay a certain number of eggs and don’t lay any more until the new baby birds have hatched and left the nest. Others will continue to lay eggs to replace eggs that disappear from the nest. Bird eggs are a tasty treat for many other animals that raid the nests and take the eggs for food.
Minute Mystery One afternoon, 3 very large men crowded together under one small umbrella. Surprisingly, no one got wet. How did this happen? 24 24
answer on page 29
Scientists wanted to see just how many eggs a certain bird would lay. The scientists took the egg from the nest of a flicker ( a type of woodpecker) every day for 73 days.
This bird laid 71 eggs during the 73 days! How egg-ceptional!
Tomatoes were first grown by Indians in the mountains of South America many, many years ago. Tomatoes came to America after 1776. Americans used to think tomatoes were poisonous. Around 1825 a man named Colonel Robert Johnson ate an entire bushel of tomatoes to prove they were not poisonous. The Italian word for tomato is “pomodore.” Today each American is said to eat 70 pounds of tomatoes every year. NOW OPEN at STURBRIDGE!

Graphs Are Great!
Graphs are able to help you solve problems by seeing information in a special way! Mrs. Wilson’s fourth grade class took a survey to see what vegetables they liked to eat. Then they listed the information on a picture graph. Look at the graph and answer the questions at the bottom of the page. Each picture stands for one child that liked that veggie.

Bananas are the most popular fruit in the USA. A bunch of bananas is called a “hand.” A single banana is called a “finger.” Bananas are shipped to the USA from many other countries. A “plantain” is a kind of banana. They can be eaten boiled, fried or mashed like potatoes! The great explorer, Alexander the Great, brought bananas to Europe almost 2400 years ago!
