Girls helped with the cooking and mattress making. Our mattresses were stuffed with pine needles or corn husks. Ouch! We took our family’s pigs to the shore so they could dig mussels to eat! Neither boys nor girls had much time for school or play!
Squanto and Samoset were our Indian friends. They taught us how to grow lots of corn. Boys guarded cornfields by throwing rocks at birds and wolves. We also shelled corn, helped cook wild turkeys and gathered grasses to make roofs for our houses! We hunted for food and made wooden pegs that we used for nails!

Let’s Go Swimming For Christmas! Did you know that many places on Earth have hot weather for Christmas? Do you know why? The Earth is tilted on its axis (it doesn’t stand up straight). As our planet moves around the sun, one half of it is closer and one half is farther away from the sun throughout the year ( a year is the time it takes the earth to make one trip around the sun). When we have winter in the northern half of the earth (the Northern Hemisphere), the southern half of the earth (the Southern Hemisphere) is having summer. Of course the north and south poles are always cold. These places don’t ever get much heat from our sun.
Europe United States
Asia Africa
South America
In Chile Santa is called “Old Man Christmas”. Children in Brazil call Santa “Father Noel”.
Australia
In Australia it’s HOT! People go to the beaches to swim and surf!

our children’s teachers say it all the time…encourage your child to read! There are great benefits to reading. Sometimes, however, getting your child to read is harder than it sounds. Here are a few ideas that just may make reading more appealing in your home. Be a role model. Let your children see you reading! Take some time every day to stop doing housework & sit down to read. You’ll be showing your child how important reading is in life & that it’s not just for kids. Have a comfy area in your home to read. Have books on hand to choose from. You want to be ready when the mood strikes your child to read! Get your child a library card. Make frequent trips to the library so that your child has a wide variety of books to choose from. Have a designated time to read. Just before bed is a great time for your child to settle in & read. This can also start a lifelong habit of reading right before bed. If your child is reluctant to read, start with magazines. Shorter, high interest articles will be easier to start with than a whole book. Dive into a subject. If your child has an interest in science, go find all the science books you can find. Children will read what interests them. Have a progress chart. Some kids love to see visually just how much they’ve read. Offer an incentive, & see how far they’ll go!
What building has the most stories? The library, of course!

he holidays are coming, and everyone is beginning to make plans. The usual questions are being asked: how many things can we do, do we have to invite everyone, how can we make everything just perfect, how are we going to pay for all this? In other words, just how much stress can we put ourselves and our family under again this holiday season? Then we actually wonder why we do not enjoy the holidays more. This year, what if we try a new approach the holidays? Replace those old questions with some new ones. What are the easiest things to do so we have more family time? How do we extend the fun and not the stress? Do my children really need every single thing they ask for? How can we begin or continue a holiday tradition with our children of giving and thinking outside ourselves during this season? Is it really necessary to have every single kind of potato at Thanksgiving dinner? Children do not focus on the details that adults do during the holidays. They do not worry about how the house looks other than wondering just how many lights they can talk mom and dad into putting up. They do not notice if the napkins are folded correctly, or if the china matches or if the ceiling fan was dusted. Children notice and respond to the feel of the holidays. They notice the excitement, love, comfort and coziness of family. Unfortunately, the holidays are usually so Children notice and stressful the feel of the home is anything but comfortable and respond to the feel of the cozy. holidays. They notice the excitement, love, comfort As the planning begins, think back to your own childhood and coziness of family. holiday memories. Growing up in my family meant it was not
really a holiday unless we were at my Grandma’s house. It was hoping each year to be old enough to drink out of the special glasses only the grown ups could use. Christmas memories include my cousins and siblings keeping each other up Christmas Eve hoping to catch even a tiny glimpse of Santa. We helped create happy memories for others by giving, which can be done through projects like Operation Christmas Child from Samaritan’s Purse. It will be the little things like this our children will recall, not all the little details we grown ups can get caught up in. Sometimes the most fun can be found when things do not go just as planned. Holidays are a time of celebration of family, friends, life, love and togetherness. They are not meant to be perfect and it is never too late to create new holiday memories your children will hold in their hearts forever.
