Legend of the Wishbone After a holiday meal of turkey and dressing, have you and someone else ever held on to either side of the wishbone of a turkey and pulled, hoping to break off the largest piece? If you got the largest piece, did you make a wish? If so, you are carrying on a tradition brought to America by the Pilgrims! The wishbone legend began with the ancient belief that chickens were fortune tellers. The tradition of wishing on their collarbone, or “wishbone, was passed down through generations and brought to America by the Pilgrims. They adapted it to the turkey, making it part of the Thanksgiving festivities.

Did You Know? A male turkey is a tom. A female is a hen. Babies are called poults. Ben Franklin liked the turkey so much he thought it should be the official bird of the USA. One hen lays around 115 eggs a month. Each egg takes about 28 days to hatch. A mature turkey has 3,500 feathers. Turkey feathers were used by Native Americans to make arrows. Wild turkeys can run 20 miles per hour and fly 55 miles per hour. A tom's gobble can be heard a mile away. A group of turkeys is called a flock. 88

Cornucopia Symbol of Thanksgiving The ‘cornucopia,’ or ‘horn of plenty,’ is an old symbol of harvest and the time for giving thanks. It is a horn-shaped container overflowing with fruit and vegetables. Its beginning as a symbol of abundance comes from Greek mythology. Teach them Manners

H

aving good manners will take your child far in life. People will respond better to him and treat him with more respect if he exhibits good manners. To some kids, manners come naturally. To many kids, manners must be taught. Teaching manners is not rocket science; it just takes consistency. The payoffs, however, will follow your child wherever he goes in life. Here are a few simple tips to help your child get off to a very polite start: Actions speak louder than words. Model politeness and manners in your home. You can teach manners very effectively by practicing good manners yourself. Start when your kids are young. A toddler is not too young to say ‘please’ when asking for a snack. Focus on one behavior at a time. Don’t try to tackle everything at once. When you’ve got ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ mastered, move on to other behaviors. Be specific. Instead of just telling your child to have good manners on the phone, tell him to speak loudly and clearly when answering the phone, to ask who’s calling, and to write down the message. Give frequent reminders. On the way to a birthday party, remind your child to thank the host for inviting him and to say thank you for any food, drink, or goody bag. Hopefully these tips will help ensure that good manners abound at your house, and that your child learns manners that will take him far in life!

Friday Nov. 26 and

Every Saturday and Sunday Nov. 27 through Dec. 19 . Take a train ride with Santa and tell him what you would like for Christmas. Special gift for each child! Bring your camera for a photo with Santa!

Help Be A Blessing This Holiday Season Sharon A. McGee, LPC-S, LMFT, RPT

Counselor’s Corner

C

an you believe the holidays are approaching already? Seems like yesterday we were wishing for warm weather so we could pull out the shorts and flip flops. Yet here we are in the middle of college football season with Thanksgiving and Christmas right around the corner. When we stop to think about the meaning of these holidays, consider how to give life to their meaning by becoming a blessing to someone this season. Being a blessing may seem like an unusual concept, yet there are countless ways we can reach out and bless others. The holidays can be a very lonely time for many people. College students who cannot afford to go home; military members and/or families who cannot go home; senior citizens who will spend the holidays alone or in a nursing home with no visits from families; and the list could go on and on. Use this holiday season to become a blessing to others. Invite at least one person outside your family to share a holiday meal. Bake cookies to send to soldiers or to take to a nursing home and provide a little holiday cheer. Write letters and cards to elderly family members, neighbors or church members because handwritten letters are rare these days, and they mean so much. Giving surprise anonymous gift cards can help a family stretch their grocery and/or gift budget, and it is a great way to be a secret Santa. As Christmas approaches, many organizations need supplies to assist families in providing for their families. Food is always needed at the Food Bank and other organizations. The possibilities are endless. Include your family in the brainstorming of ideas and execution of the plans to become a blessing to someone this holiday season. Good luck in your adventure, but beware! Once you start and you feel that warm feeling inside that comes from giving, it becomes contagious. You just might find you and your family becoming a blessing to others all year round.

Try to save yourself a little time in the kitchen. When browning meat for spaghetti, brown some extra for the freezer. You can get it out for another meal, like tacos or sloppy joes, on a night when you don’t have much time to cook. Half of your work will already be done!

How do you suppose Pilgrims knew what time it was? Did they have watches? How about grandfather clocks? During the 1600s, watches were carried in their pocket on a chain, and only the very wealthy could afford them. Clocks also were very expensive. The Pilgrims were very poor, and lists of what they owned do not show any type of watches or clocks. The Pilgrims could tell the time of day by watching the position of the sun in the sky. When it was time for them to get together for a meeting or church, someone would beat a drum to let them know to come together.
