Create a large family unit for the rear of the building and a studio apartment near the front. Model the building so that each unit has a relationship with the southeast side to heighten the sense of community. Wood slats of varying lengths and spacing are used to enclose the balconies for a sense of privacy from nearby houses, act as solar shading and frame views. SOUTHWORKS COMMUNITY BRIEF: Design a multi-residential plan for the property between two shopping centers while keeping the site’s functionality. It was a collaboration with Jon Bennett, Alex Li and Tara Selvaraj. APPROACH: Extend the slope of the site into the center to create a multi purpose public plaza near the commercial entrances to gentrify the site. The series of town homes overlooking the plaza provide a sense of community and feature their own private outdoor spaces. The south road for vehicles was maintained for its commercial use. Vignette

Southwest View of 1:100 Model APPROACH: The residence is located in a forested valley near Cambridge, ON. The living and working building are connected by an exterior courtyard. The rear facades are floor to ceiling glass for an inspirational and private view into the forest beyond. A sleeping loft is located above the washroom.

BRIEF: In pairs, design anything that utilizes the spanning capabilities of steel in a new way. Structure and construction details should be explored as well as the concept. The project was created for the 2014 edition of the Steel Structures Education Foundation competition which runs annually. Roof Plan

APPROACH: Create a lightweight steel structure that an innovative playground of tightly woven climbing mesh can be suspended from. The structure should be versatile and capable of being built in any public space. It must also be completely inclosed for maximum safety. Canvas should be suspended between the steel trusses to provide shade and continue with the treetop theme. The project was completed with Brenda Reid.

Render BRIEF:

APPROACH:

Graphically represent a system using minimal words. Explain how the system works through 3-D modelling, maps and images.

Provide information on New York City’s bike share program, Citi Bikes, including how it relates to New York’s subway system through maps and simple info graphics.

BRIEF: Design an off the grid “oasis in an extreme climate. The oasis should not be equipped for prolonged living, but solely to offer sanctuary to travellers. APPROACH: Create a quaint bunker in the remote cold location of northern Quebec to provide hikers with a place to read, watch wildlife or take shelter. The building should be embedded in the earth for extra insulation and be modelled to withstand strong winter winds.

Immensely thick roof for additional insulation

Black metal roof to attract heat

Large quadruple glazed south facing windows for maximum solar gain and to provide day lighting year round

Steeply pitched roof with corrugated fins to shed snow and water

Thick walls insulated with EnviroSpray foam insulation and clad with precast concrete or wood paneling for a warmer feel

West facing windows are operable to vent space during slightly warmer summer months

Below frost line to provide additional insulation

Air lock entry that doubles as a sun space

Ceramic tile flooring for thermal mass

Concrete wall to slowly release heat from sun space into room
