why social media? like the everyday business card or company website, a basic social media profile is now a brand neccessity. communication has changed a brand’s need to engage and interact with consumers in real-time. the only way to do so is through correct and effective use of the numerous social networks that are changing the way we do business and communicate with each other. in its most basic form, social networking is a conversation. a conversation between “friends” or “fans” about what you like, what you don’t like and what you are doing. throughout this conversation ideas are shared, pictures and videos are posted and opinions are discussed in an open, free environment.

with social media everything is changing, and change is everything.

then back in the day it was always the brand that informed their customer. because there were not any easily accesible tools, customers couldn’t reply and customers were not heard. one way traffic. now nowadays brands are trying to converse with their customer by way of social media. this results in customers replying and good feedback results in customer-driven changes. next in the future, the customer will lead conversation by way of social media. brands will anticipate conversation and be primed for all manner of feedback. brands’ will account for outside opinion and improve because of consumer interaction.

focus on relationships, listen to the interactions

social media is the opportunity for brands to become more connected with clients and consumers, confidently developing a strong and reliable relationship. social media platforms provide the tools to start this relationship and maintain useful conversation. social media is like marriage, it’s is long-term commitment, not a marketing gimmick. well maintained social media means the online customer is king.

how long is now?

without a clear strategy some brands can lose sight of just how well social media can support their heritage, customer contact and sales. using different aspects of social media to support each other will demonstrate how a brand can work in the long-term, provided it’s planned and maintained well. we view social media as a strategy, not a tactic. we consider social media platforms (blogs, twitter, facebook, etc) as tactics that complete a social media strategy. without a carefully thought-out plan, social media is overwhelming and misused.

a basic fashion seasonal timeline

one of the biggest problems between fashion brands and social media is the lack of understanding on how one can work for the other. just like a seasonal collection needs a story board, or a seasonal calendar holds deadlines, a successful social media strategy needs strategic planning.

CMK1 — social media — a short introduction — 18 — —

how do i get there?

phase 1 this is where most brands are sitting. a website, online store and facebook all exist - but nothing works in harmony instead working independently of each other. phase 2 using offline content (eg. look books, campaign imagery) to be integrated online. more social media networks are maintained, including branded content, a branded blog, branded events, online magazines even an online video channel. phase 3

do things that are excellent, not easy

after using a long-term strategy, customers and fans of the brand are creating content for and with the brand. branded social media supports each in marketing and pure play.

three values for social media

CMK1 — social media — a short introduction — 32 — —

1 social media is unique because you can create friendships on a deeper level. by means of conversation you can ask your consumer direct questions. as a brand you are able to rectify mistakes and improve on things for the future. you can give your fans/friends presents; and reward them for being a friend.

2 social media is beautiful consumers create free interactive content for you. if they like you of course…so first you have to become a friend with interesting or funny content and your consumers (friends) will spread the word. the most beautiful word of all - word of mouth! but be warned - making good friends will cost some time and energy. we will help make your social media look beautiful with a well-designed facebook page, blog or twitterpage complete with applications specific to your brand.

social media is intelligent

technology in social media is always developing for the better. social media success depends on how this technology is used and the kind of strategy developed around its uses to gain maximum benefits.
