SHEPHERD MAN DIES AFTER SINGLE CAR ACCIDENT ON US-127 IN UNION TOWNSHIP
Courtesy Photo | Mary Ellen Brandell Volunteer Center Members of the Safer Sex Patrol put together care packages of contraceptives to hand out during their patrol.
A 28-year-old Shepherd man is dead following a single car accident early Saturday morning in Union Township. The incident took place after 2 a.m. Oct. 28 on US-127/northbound River Road, said Isabella County Sheriff Michael Main. The sheriff on Sunday identified the victim as Jeffrey Arnold. A passerby reported debris in the roadway and guardrail damage, Main said. When the passerby investigated further, he found a car had rolled into the median. The person called 911 and reported one man was out of the vehicle walking around, while another man was trapped. After first responders arrived, they began extrication of the man in the vehicle, Main said. A wrecker assisted with stabilization of the car, a 2017 Chrysler 300c, while the first responders worked to free Arnold. After Arnold was free, he was taken by Mobile Medical Response to a local
emergency department, where he later succumbed to his injuries and died shortly after, Main said. Markes Gadlen, a 23-year-old Pompeii man, was the passenger in the vehicle, Main said, while Arnold was the driver. Gadlen refused medical attention. Contributing factors are unknown at this time. The accident is still under investigation. The sheriff’s department was assisted by Isabella County Central Dispatch, the Mount Pleasant Police Department, the Mount Pleasant Fire Department, Green Towing, the Saginaw Chippewa Tribal Police, the Midland County Sheriff’s Office, Mobile Medical Response, the Michigan Department of Transportation and the Isabella County Sheriff’s Office Accident Investigation Unit.
Safer Sex Patrol volunteers aim to prevent the spread of STIs during Halloween season Pelowski removed as By Ashley Schafer Staff Reporter news@cm-life.com
Sexually transmitted infections aren’t usually a hot topic of conversation during a night out at the bar, but for the volunteers of Safer Sex Patrol (SSP), it’s a conversation starter. SSP volunteers dedicate a few nights during the semester to visit local bars, where they hand out candy, condoms, dental dams, abstinence information and other tools to help prevent the spread of STIs. This semester, SSP started bringing that conversation to football tailgates as well. Holidays, like Halloween, and on-campus events create situations where there’s a greater risk of contracting an STI. Sault Ste. Marie senior Emma Harrington, an SSP member for four years, now serves as the student coordinator. She said people usually respond positively toward the group and appreciate receiving free contraceptives. “It’s Halloween weekend, so I think it’s a good time to hand out condoms, because peo-
ple might be making decisions this weekend,” Harrington said. “I don’t know if statistically there is an increased risk (of contracting STIs) or anything like that, but I think it’s a good time to push information.” According to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, Isabella County had 218 reported cases of chlamydia, 20 cases of gonorrhea and two cases of of syphilis in 2015. In preparation for their bar patrol Oct. 26, SSP facilitators and volunteers met in the Bovee University Center Oct. 25 to wrap condoms and dental dams in informational tags. SSP also provides presentations on sex education for Greek Life and residence halls. Harrington said these interactions with SSP may be the first and only sexual education students receive. Sex education is arguably important for the college demographic. While people aged 15 to 24 only amount to 27 percent of the sexually active population, they account for roughly 50 percent of the 20 million new STIs that are contracted each year in the U.S., Harrington said.

field hockey head coach By Mitchell Vosburg Staff Reporter news@cm-life.com
Molly Pelowski has been removed as Central Michigan field hockey head coach. The decision was announced Oct. 26 by Associate Vice President and Director of Athletics Michael Alford. Pelowski continues to be employed by CMU. Alford met with the team Thursday to discuss the future of the program. A search for Pelwoski’s replacement will begin immediately. “Molly is a loyal Chippewa and has been one of the most warm and welcoming people on the staff,” Alford said the release. “We have a team of outstanding students who achieve at the highest levels in the classroom. A change is needed so we can put our student-athletes in a position to win Mid-American Conference titles.”
Pelowski went 3-49 as head coach after being hired in February 2015, with a 2-15 in the MAC and a 1-22 record at home. The team currently sits at 0-17 on the season, dropping 31-conMOLLY secutive games and held PELOWSKI without a goal in its last 12 contests. An interim coach for Friday’s season finale at Ball State has yet to be named. The Chippewas received the National Academic Team Award from the National Field Hockey Coaches Association in her first two seasons. The team has also produced 30 players who made the NFHCA National Academic Team, as well as six players named Scholar of Distinction.

MOVING PICTURES’
MUST-SEE
HORROR
MITCHELL KUKULKA
MOVIES
1.) "It Follows" (2015) Director David Robert Mitchell's terrifying tale of adolescent sexuality gone wrong skillfully blends the retro aesthetic of classic 80s slasher flicks with some genuinely inspired modern independent filmmaking. Extra kudos for being one of the few recent movies filmed on location in the great cities of Detroit and Berkley, and flaunting that fact whenever it can.
2.) "Green Room" (2016) While not a "horror" movie in the traditional sense, few recent films have been as horrific, or exhilarating, as this deceptively simple yarn of a band punk rockers fighting to survive in a concert hall run by NeoNazis. It also includes one of Patrick Stewart's best performances, and one of Anton Yelchin's last.
3.) "Castlevania" (2017) This one is kind of cheating – it's a four-part Netflix series rather than a "film" – but the perfect pacing, beautiful American-anime visuals, charming humor and gallons upon gallons of blood and gore make it 100 minutes well spent for any horror fan. The fact that it's by far the best film adaptation of a video game to date is definitely a plus.
4.) "Lake Mungo" (2008) Shot like a documentary, a simple murder mystery gradually becomes something much deeper, and darker. It's a slow burn, but Lake Mungo gets under your skin in a way no movie before or after has been able to match.
5.) "Creepshow" (1982) Directed by the late, great King of Zombies George Romero and written by and starring horror auteur Stephen King, the fact more modern audiences don't cherish this classically creepy and shamelessly goofy horror anthology is a straight-up crime.
BRENT GUNN 1) "The Shining" (1980)
Horror movies, good and bad, are an essential part of the Halloween experience. Knowing this, sophomore podcaster Brent Gunn and news editor Mitchell Kukulka, co-hosts of Central Michigan Life's movie podcast “Moving Pictures,” have put together their own lists of the must-see films of the Halloween season. Be sure to check out “Moving Pictures” on Central Michigan Life's website, or subscribe to our podcast channel on iTunes and SoundCloud. New episodes are released every Monday at 12:30 p.m.
Director Stanley Kubrick's fever dream continues to haunt audiences to this day. Classic career-defining performances, a hauntingly slow pace and a hypnotic synth-laden soundtrack make this not only a superb pick for Halloween, but a film that will continue to allure audiences with its twisted beauty for years to come.
2) "The Last House On The Left" (1972) Wes Craven's directorial debut "The Last House On The Left" is a shining pinnacle of exploitation cinema. Filmed in a guerrilla approach with a grisly lo-fi aesthetic, what Craven accomplishes with this film was unparalleled for its time period. Just as brutal and raw as it was at the time of its debut, the film will disturb you, showcasing Craven's darkest talents in filmmaking.
3) "American Psycho" (2000) Quotable to no end, hilarious and at times downright ugly and uncomfortable, director Mary Harron's adaptation of the celebrated novel is a must-see for any horror fan. What sells it movie is Christian Bale's genius portrayal of the Wall Street serial killer Patrick Bateman. Bale is absorbed into the psychotic charisma of Bateman, and every moment he's on screen is hilariously perverse and pitch-black in delivery.
4) "The Blair Witch Project" (1999) The film that put found-footage on the map, what "Blair Witch" did for independent cinema and horror cinema in general is constantly understated. A black sheep among the horror movies of its time, Blair Witch chose to move away from the gory and exploitative, to the subtly creepy and atmospherically minimal. "Blair Witch" is probably the greatest found-footage horror film of all time, though whether that's really something to be proud of is another debate.
5) "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" (1974) The film that started the iconic series is still a soul-crushing, depressingly beautiful experience. The film's hopeless mood and brutal intensity has stood the test of time after 40 years, and its pessimistic simplicity is an approach directors have been ripping off ever since.

OPINION
It’s 2017, why are you still wearing an offensive Halloween costume? “Savage Warband,” “Oriental Princess,” and “Witch Doctor” are all names I saw while looking for Halloween costumes. A Native American headdress, an Asian woman in a gown and tiara and an African man wearing face paint and holding a staff — those were the costumes. Really? Are we still living in the Stone Age? It’s 2017. We should have higher standards. I know, I’m a white guy. I’m Italian so the worst costume someone could dress in to look like something from my culture is an old woman with a pot of pasta, talking about meatballs or even dressing like Tony Soprano or the Godfather. I wouldn’t be offended.
Elio Stante

Honestly, I’d probably laugh. Someone dressing as Mario and doing a bad Italian accent doesn’t have the same history of disrespect to an Italian as someone putting on a Native American headdress and making war calls with a tomahawk does to a Native American. The costumes I saw reminded me of the people I saw in Charles V. Park Library throughout the week passing out fliers and cards telling people to
respect other cultures. They were telling students, “It’s a culture. Not a costume.” It’s true. We shouldn’t dress like someone else’s culture when it’s offensive. There’s probably someone reading this saying, “Well then you shouldn’t dress like Darth Vader because it’s offensive to Jedis, or you shouldn’t dress like Jack Sparrow because pirates will be offended.” That’s stupid and entirely not the point. If you can’t understand why a person might be offended by you wearing a costume that appropriates their culture, then talk to them. Try and figure out why they are uncomfortable with your costume. Actually talk with them and be part of the conversation. Don’t be so quick to dismiss their concerns.
If your costume involves a stereotypical depiction of someone who is not of your race, you are exactly who I’m talking to. Take Julianne Hough, the two-time champion of “Dancing with the Stars,” for example. In 2013, she went as “Orange is the New Black” character, Crazy Eyes. It might not have been a problem except Hough is white and she dressed in black face. The backlash Hough faced was intense and she apologized saying, “It certainly was never my intention to be disrespectful or demeaning to anyone in any way. I realize my costume hurt and offended people and I truly apologize.” She gave the same basic apology ev-
ery person who gets called when they have an offensive costume by trying to claim ignorance. She tried to say she didn’t know it was offensive. Hough and everyone who wears a costume that could be seen as offensive should know better by now, especially with the history of blackface in American performing arts history. Your costumes may not be as blatantly offensive, but we should be more conscience of our choices. We shouldn’t still be having this conversation year after year. If you are going out on Halloween, stop and think before you buy a costume. Even for next Halloween, remember to be a little more thoughtful.
Holiday season movie nostalgia is great, except when you force it on others The holiday season is always a great time for people to watch movies they grew up with. However, it’s not the time to force your friends to sit through them. I always hear, “Oh my God, you haven’t seen (insert old Holiday movie here)? Well we HAVE to watch it,” countless times from October through December. I can tell you exactly how many times it’s sounded appealing to watch those movies – none. Why does the “best movie ever” just so happen to be a holiday movie you watched as a kid? Why should I feel bad when I haven’t seen that movie? Why do people act offended when you point out their crappy kid’s movie is, well, a crappy kid’s movie? For starters, it’s never as good a movie as they’re telling me it is. I’m sorry, but “Halloween Town” is not more interest-

ing to 19-year-old me than it was to them as a pre-teen. It doesn’t matter how much you liked it then. There’s nothing about those movies to redeem the hour-and-a-half I’m going to waste watching them. I don’t understand this phenomenon. Sitting through a bad movie the other person has seen dozens of times is a terrible way to spend a few hours. Although, I do feel bad sometimes as I attempt to validate my experience by pointing out how bad these movies are. Making fun of bad acting and poor special effects, or pointing out silly plot holes in an attempt to have fun during a
holiday movie always results in me looking like a “jerk”. I’m tired of it. There’s a simple solution to this problem of recycling classics in a chase for a nostalgia high: watch something new. Please, put down “Ghostbusters,” change the channel when “Hocus Pocus” comes on and for the love of god, don’t make me watch “Miracle on 34th Street.” I’m going to hate it and in the end, you are going to hate me for making fun of your movie. There are literally thousands of new holiday movies people can watch for the first time and create new experiences. Why do people force themselves to watch everything again? To me, this reveals a certain “film snobery” when people think they are better than someone else because they’ve seen a movie someone else hasn’t.
It’s ridiculous to put someone down for not having seen a movie. Nostalgia and tradition are a great thing to experience throughout the holiday season but roping people in to try and force your nostolgia on others is a waste of time. It’s time we could spend forming new experiences we could genuinely look back on and enjoy.

So please, don’t watch the same movie for the hundredth time. Watch something new this holiday season. Watch something fresh. Watch something different, weird or old, just as long as it’s a new experience. It’ll probably be a good one. At the very least it won’t be terrible for someone else.

Press conference about student hit and run death takes place Wednesday By Evan Sasiela Managing Editor news@cm-life.com
Two years later, Central Michigan University student Ryan Tsatsos has not been forgotten. Tsatsos was killed in a hit-andrun Nov. 1, 2015 on Crawford Road between Billabrail Street and Concourse Drive in Mount Pleasant. Two years later, his killer has not been found. Tsatsos’ parents, Paul and Julie Tsatsos, will attend a press conference at the Michigan State Police Mount Pleasant Post on Nov. 1 – two years to the day after their son, Ryan, was killed. Det. Sgt. Todd Parsons of the MSP said an investigation to find the person responsible is still ongoing. He said there have been more than 100 tips in the two years since the investigation began – with some
ranging from the Upper Peninsula to southeastern Michigan. “We’ve still been receiving tips,” Parsons said. “We’ve been following up on those leads that we have.” Tsatsos attended De La Salle High School in Warren. He began his freshman year in 2015. During Halloween weekend 2015, Tsatsos was walking back to his residence hall from a party when a car struck and killed him on Crawford Road. On Oct. 16, the Isabella County Sheriff ’s Office shared a photo by Crime Stoppers of Flint & Genesee County with information about Tsatsos’ death. A cash reward of up to $10,000 is being offered. Police believe the car that struck Tsatsos is a dark metallic blue color that could likely have front passenger side damage and potentially fender, windshield and hood damage.

Michigan disc jockey shares story behind the Dogman legend said stood on its hind legs and stared at him. His exact quote was that, "I may have been imagining at things but I was aware that dog was smiling at me." He told me this in 1987 and it happened in 1938. For nearly 50 years he didn’t tell his wife or anyone what he saw. After he heard the song he felt that he had maybe some sort of explanation for what he saw.
By Samantha Shriber Staff Reporter sports@cm-life.com
It took disc jockey Steve Cook only half a day to create the song that helped make famous Michigan's very own monster, the Dogman. "The Legend of the Dogman" stirred hysteria in the northwest after being written and played by Cook at radio station WTCM-FM in 1987. Cook said he intended the song to be an April Fool's joke but was shocked when an overwhelming amount of callers shared their Dogman sightings to the station. Cook's song and related documents describe the beast as being 7-feet tall with the torso of a muscular man and a howl similar to a human's scream. It's written the creature's activity comes in a 10-year cycle restricted to years ending in seven. The year 2017 would be prime time for a Dogman to appear, according to legend. Could this year be the year to spot the fabled dogman? Cook says — maybe.
STEVE COOK CM Life: What led you to create "The Legend of Dogman Song"? Cook: I’ve always been very interested in unknown creatures, mysterious animals,
What is some interesting folklore related to the Dogman? Native Americans tend to be very vivid in their descriptions. They tend to be very, very realistic when it comes to their description of creatures in the forest. The Chippewa and Odawa tribes talk about a creature that was half man
and half dog. If you dig really deeply into it you’ll discover that there was a third tribe that has gone extinct with no evident traces of them. The warriors of their tribe were said to commune with the creatures of the forest to a point where they could take on the shape of any animal they chose. That tribe became known as the shape shifters and that piece of folklore goes through all of the tribes in the country, particularly those in the upper Midwest. What does your Dogman look like? I kind of created this creature based on the Bigfoot and the El Chupacabra, which is sort of a doglike creature and of course the classic werewolf everyone used to be frightened of.
Do you believe there's room for the legend to expand? I think it has reached it’s limit because it tends to be more regionalized and I think also because a lot of it started as an April Fools Day prank. I do think though that as time goes by, the story will continue to be told through the generations and as most folklore stories be acknowledged. It’ll always be something that is Michigan and northwestern. Do you believe in the Dogman? It’s like the UFO phenomenon. There’s a tremendous amount of evidence that UFOs exist but there’s never been an actual real, face-toface, physical encounter that compelled me to say absolutely, that they do exist.
Courtesy Photo | Steve Cook The Michigan Dogman is rumored to stalk Michigan and according to legends, appears in years ending in seven.
ghost stories and that sort of thing. We wanted to come up with an idea that would make a good April Fool’s prank. I created a poem about the Michigan Dogman. The Dogman himself is sort of an algorithm of a whole bunch of different creatures, like Bigfoot, the New Jersey Devil, Chupacabra and all of those things. I wanted it to be sort of personalized to the state of Michigan. All of this time having no idea I was actually building a character that already existed in folklore of this area for thousands of years prior to my song. How did you react when people shared their own encounters with the Dogman? One thing that it did is tended to open my eyes in a couple of different ways. We can’t always rely on science to give us all of the answers.
Sometimes there are things in nature that holds a mystery. What was your favorite Dogman story? My personal favorite was the very first one I heard back in 1987. It was told to me by one of the very early callers that had rung up the radio. (The caller) was at the time in his mid to late 70s and had an encounter when he was 17 years old back in the 30s during the Great Depression in Paris, Michigan. He noticed these wild dogs come out of the woods. They started circling him, which is the way wolves would hunt. They kept coming closer and closer and closer and he started to get nervous. He had a .22 rifle with him he had taken hunting so he felt like he could protect himself. He fired a shot into the air and the dogs all scattered except one, which he

Hauntings of CMU Students and staff share their encounters with paranormal activity on campus By Samantha Shriber Staff Reporter sports@cm-life.com
Halloween is the time of year where ghouls and ghosts appear in the form of stories and entertainment. But who still lurks on campus when the jack o’lanterns go out and the snow hits the ground? Who watches students, staff and faculty when nobody’s around? Welcome to the dark side of Central Michigan Life, to see how our ghosts fire up in the afterlife. These are haunts of Central Michigan University.
NORTH CAMPUS: THE DARKNESS THAT LINGERS Dearborn Heights sophomore Tierra Wright said her first floor room in Calkins Hall embodies the cryptic chilliness provided by the north campus of CMU. North campus is the home to CMU’s oldest buildings and the most haunting tales. It is the setting for a freshman to be discovered dead under the covers by her roommates in 1951. It is also where a cafeteria employee was strangled to death in Warriner Hall during the 1930s. Her head became trapped within a small window leading to an elevator shaft in 1937 that immediately resulted in her death. Wright said she did not realize her dorm was haunted until after an incident that occurred in September. “One time our friend was waiting outside our door when nobody was in the room. She heard two women from behind the door mumbling about someone waiting outside,” she said. Wright and her roommates have been subjected to doors closing by themselves, and fans flying off the window sill and being flung across the room. “One day (my roommate) Alyssa couldn’t find
her command hook and out of nowhere it slipped down the wall,” she said, explaining the hook had slid against the wall as though a magnet were leading it to the floor from the other side. Wright said numerous orbs appear on the screen of two video recordings she made with her roommates in the dorm. “I just know that things don’t fly off walls normally, and the fans just flew across the room too many times for it to be a coincidence,” she said. It’s not just students reporting hauntings in north campus, but staff too. Ruth Barrett, a custodian at CMU, has been working for 35 years and was assigned to work in Barnes Hall from 1994 to 2012. She recalled a story of a girl who had hung herself near a window looking out on Washington Street. She said residents later would consistently report lights and other electronic devices, such as televisions, being turned on-and-off in the room. “I never really had a problem with Barnes Hall, but a lot of students did,” Barrett said. “I heard the stories, but I could never get them substantiated. I asked several people about it, but they would never talk, which tells me something.” Barrett said students would avoid a study room, located in the basement. “They said they would have the weirdest feelings down there,” Barrett said. Her most personal encounter with paranormal entities happened in Anna M. Barnard Residential Hall, a former residency that opened in 1948 and was demolished in 1997. Barrett said she was doing maintenance in the hall after students had gone home for winter vacation and the campus was left in solitude. “It was an interior hallway, the doors were all shut and the lights

didn’t blink,” she said. “There was nobody else here.” Barrett said amidst the isolation of her shift, a shadowy cloud has appeared as a tall, human-size figure and walked past her. “I saw it go by me and there should have been nothing there,” she said. She believes the ghost is of a freshman who died in her sleep in 1951 on a Sunday morning after spending the previous day at a picnic with her roommates. When the ambulance arrived at Barnard Hall, her body had to be removed from the hall through a back staircase leading
into a courtyard. “The stairway to me was just like any normal residency stairway,” Barrett said. “But once you got to the first floor landing it would be freezing cold. The radiator was always pouring out heat but you couldn’t feel any of it.” Barrett said prior to Barnard’s demolishment,

Guenin spent his Saturday night sleeping in the common room with chairs pushed against both of the bedroom doors, keeping them shut tight.

custodial staff had come to believe the student’s spirit was released and would no longer be tied to the root of her untimely death. Other north campus halls that have been the setting to paranormal activity include Larzelere Hall. Indiana sophomore Shane Guenin said nearly every morning last year he was greeted by the sounds of something moving around in
an empty bedroom. He shared a dorm with a front desk employee on the third floor of Larzelere Hall. He didn’t want to believe a ghost had been residing in his suitemate’s bedroom. “He left for the weekend and it happened again. I was in the bathroom Saturday morning when I heard someone moving,” Guenin said. “I (peeked) my head in and looked around and there was nobody there.” His next paranormal encounter took place after returning back to an empty dorm late in the evening.
THE GHOST OF MOORE HALL Barrett said she has experienced decades worth of ghostly encounters at CMU. She has been chased out of Finch Fieldhouse by an unsettling energy that followed her during a late night shift. Barrett calls out the ghost of Warriner Hall by name. She’s even been in the tunnel system that exists beneath campus. She said her first paranormal encounter was with Ernie, the ghost of Moore Hall. Barrett said Ernie is the ghost of a custodian from Clare who worked midnight shifts in Moore. He died in the back of room 101 after suffering from indigestion at the beginning of his work shift. "(My husband) said when Ernie hit that chair he was dead,” Barrett said. “He said they would experience the strangest things and that the hall would never be the same again once Ernie passed away.” Doors in Moore Hall will lock and unlock on their own, Barrett said, and elevators will operate on their own. Ernie was first sighted during summer 1993 when a husband and wife had been doing labor work for the second elevator that was installed in the hall, Barrett said. The wife requested to use the custodial break room for the weekend as they spent the entire time digging up the space where the elevator would be placed. Barrett left from work Friday morning and did not return until late Sunday evening. She said the wife claimed that
a custodian was spotted walking near room 101. “There is no custodian at this campus on Sunday at 4 (p.m.),” Barrett said. “She said that he had an olive drab uniform and our guys haven’t worked in those uniforms for years. I’m convinced, the building was locked (and) there’s nothing going on this campus at that time in that year in the summer.” Barrett said she believes Ernie’s spirit still lurks in Moore Hall, roaming the main hallway and riding the newest elevator closest to the Townsend Kiva.
OUIJA BOARDS, FALLING PICTURES AND EVIL SPIRITS Mai McKnight said her first encounter with paranormal activity began during her first Welcome Weekend as a freshman. The Grand Rapids junior and her roommates at the time were in the common room getting to know each other then one of them had revealed a certain fascination with ghosts and life after death. “One of my roommates is into suspense, mystery and horror,” she said. “She showed us she has an Ouija board and we immediately told her to put that away because we don’t mess with it.” The roommate agreed to keep the board tucked away in her bedroom closet, but McKnight said she and her other roommates still felt an unwanted presence lingering in the room. She said doors would open and close and objects would fall from closets without a known cause. “A week and a half into the semester, I’m in the bedroom with my friends sitting on the floor. We were just talking and minding our business and a shoe flew out of the closet,” McKnight said. “It did not just fall, it literally flew out of the closet and almost hit my friend.” Later that semester the group re-

turned to their room on the third floor of Merrill to discover the Ouija board had been taken out of the box and laid out on the floor. McKnight said the experience has assured that a ghost was present in her room along with rumors that a student had committed suicide on the floor. “All I know now is that we don’t mess with the spirits, the demons or the lions, the witches and the wardrobe,” she said. “We just don’t do anything in that nature.” Grosse Pointe senior Christina Amato said living on the terrace floor of Cobb was nothing short from spooky. She said the basement-like space was more quiet and isolating than the floors above, making the possibility of her freshman dorm room being haunted all the more likely. “The RAs said the floor is unlike anything else in the hall,” she said. “It’s almost like a completely different world.” Amato said whenever she would wake up in the middle of the night she felt as though someone were standing in the center of the room, watching her every move in an invisible silence. Amato and her roommates would frequently hear knocking on the walls, but she said the strangest encounter was when a large canvas painting of Charlie Chaplin was thrown into the center of the room. “One night it flipped off the dresser and landed facing right side up on the floor,” she said, Amato added the canvas was placed leaning against the wall on a dresser with other items and knick knacks sitting in front of it. She said nothing else had been moved off the dresser and it appeared as though the 4x4 canvas was lifted up by an unknown force. “We ran out of the room,” Amato said. “My roommates and I were literally too scared to sleep, so we left all of our lights on overnight.”

Religion course discusses theories and ideas focusing on death and the afterlife
Halloween panelists touch on supernatural forces By Victoria Vitale Staff Reporter news@cm-life.com
By Jeremy Agosta Staff Reporter news@cm-life.com
A Central Michigan University religion department professor is teaching students how to live by having them study what it means to die. Religion 334: Death and Dying is taught by Merlyn Mowrey, a professor in the philosophy and religion department. The course sets its focus discussing the afterlife by using ideas and theories. “We talk about what it means that human beings, who are called ‘mortals,’ are influenced by the fact of our own finitude, that is, the fact that we die,” Mowrey said. The class discusses what life and death actually mean and how people handle the anxiety that can come when thinking of deathly concepts. People connect parts of their lives to their own personal identity to set themselves apart from death, Mowrey said. For example, people think that attacks on their religion or even their favorite sports teams can be perceived as matters of life and death. The reaction to these challenges can help explain why people take the attacks so personal. Mowrey calls this phenomenon “death anxiety,” which can stretch past the subject of death itself. Death anxiety can also play a part in what people give value to in their lives. “We use a psychological theory about death anxiety that suggests that death plays a powerful role in life,” Mowrey said. “Death anxiety is aroused, not just by our fear or dread of death, but by experiences.”
This theory can also explain why people hold their religions and similar beliefs so close to their personal identity, Mowrey said. It also makes the connection that people’s identity and the things that make up their
religion to cope with death and dying and ways people around death can be helped, Mowrey said. This part of the class also dissects ways other people deal with the subject in a

identity are vital in helping people cope with death. “This theory links our death anxiety to racism and sexism, to the vehemence with which some religious people argue for the superiority of their religion over others and other kinds of easily evoked hostility toward others,” she said. variety of different ways, Mowrey said. These different ways include readings on grief and what it’s like to experience death. “We start with the religious problem of theodicy, which is the problem of explaining how an all good, all powerful and all-knowing God could permit evil and suffering in the world,” Mowrey said.

and Religion and panelists comprised philosophy and religion faculty members. The first panelist to present was David Smith, with “Aliens: We Are Not Alone!” Smith discussed different movies with aliens and how they portray communication unconsciously. He elaborated by explaining how religion works through the unconscious.
“The Divine Horsemen: Transcending Worlds.” She explained how Africans religious beliefs transitioned into the new world, and how humans are spirits. “It’s important to create a bridge to understand Africans brought traditions with them, which restores energy between humans and spirits,” Jones said. She talked about the religious practice of Vodoun, and the ex-
pression of spirituality by showing movement between worlds. Kelly Murphy focused on demons and the different meanings during her presentation called “My Name is Legion: Demons in the New Testament.” She discussed how the term “demons” is commonly heard throughout the New Testament, and how it reflects human culture. Murphy spoke of “daimonia” and how spirits become evil and take over a person’s body, not for bad reasons, but rather causing physical or mental ailments. “The world of the New Testament writers had been destroyed by the Romans, but they wanted the borders redefined and to control the land again,” Murphy said. Laurel Zwissler’s presentation was called “Houseguests from Hell: Possession in Popular Culture”, where she spoke about transcendence and how God is distant and communicates with people through priests or texts such as the Bible. Bad Axe senior Hannah Sawdon attended because one of her professors was speaking on the panel. “I came here because I like to support the department,” Sawdon said. “I enjoyed how they related all of their topics to the classes they are going to be teaching.” Zwissler also discussed how people are actually speaking to demons, not God, and it’s a form of possession. She explained women are mostly targets of possession. “The human soul is passive in relationship to God and other beings, which brings this idea that God and the devil are fighting in these possessed bodies,” Zwissler said. Legends of the Dark tours scare for a cause By Alec Jones Staff Reporter news@cm-life.com
Trout Hall’s annual Legends of the Dark event is not just for scares — the haunted tour also raises money for local charities. Legends of the Dark is a haunted tour of campus with 13 different supernatural stops. Each group is led by a tour guide that acts out each story and tells the tales of Central Michigan University’s departed and lost souls. Tours took place from Oct. 18-20. Tickets were sold for $4 in advance or $5 at the door. This year, event organizers partnered with Isabella County Restoration House, a rotating homeless shelter, in attempt to help pay for ICRH’s operating expenses for two months. Numbers are still being counted, but Trout Hall Residence Hall Director Ann Krzyzaniak estimates Legends of the Dark raised about $4,000, which will come close to meeting this year’s goal and possibly exceeding it. “In working with (ICRH), we’ve learned that their operating expenses are about $2,200 a month. We know it’s cold, rainy and hot (in October) so it certainly gives us a chance to give back to our community and fill a need that exists,” Krzyzaniak said. Over the past 22 years, the money raised was donated to organizations such as Relay for Life, Sexual Aggression Peer Advocates (SAPA) and Special Olympics Michigan. Krzyzaniak facilitates Legends of the Dark — but not without help. “It takes a lot of volunteers to pull it all together so we have about 150 people that come together every year throughout the course of the three days to volunteer either as a ticket taker, a community chair person or scarers,” she said. “Scarers are certainly the biggest number of volunteers we get.”

Haunted Yard attraction helps fundraise for local entities By Sarah Kellner Staff Reporter news@cm-life.com
Brave souls who enter The Haunted Yard at 814 N. Lansing St. should be prepared for the fright of their lives. The Haunted Yard is a Halloween attraction at Mike and Kriss Roethlisberger’s house. What started as an arts and crafts project has turned into a popular attraction for families and singles in the Mount Pleasant area. Kriss Roethlisberger said the Haunted Yard attracts about 6,500 visitors each October with up to 2,000 on Halloween alone. The yard features an eerie maze full of werewolves, spiders and clowns. The Haunted Yard has free admission, though visitors are encouraged to donate a few dollars to keep it running year to year. In one season, the attraction brings in about $5,000, Kriss said. The Roethlisbergers don’t keep any of the money they receive. Instead, the proceeds are split between three organizations in Mount Pleasant: Epsilon Nu Tau, an entrepreneurship fraternity at Central Michigan University, the CMU chapter of Circle K and the Mount Pleasant High School Key Club. Members of the organizations volunteer at the Haunted Yard as chaperones during the kid friendly “timid hour” and as scarers during the “haunting hour.” During “timid hour,” lights stay on in the yard and there are no monsters jumping out to scare people. After 7 p.m. the lights dim and the scares come out. On Halloween, The Haunted Yard will be open from 5-9 p.m. Epsilon Nu Tau (ENT) is the nation’s first co-ed entrepreneurship fraternity. Based in Ohio, ENT has 14 chapters in eight U.S. states. The Eta chapter at CMU was founded in 2013 by three students as a way to get people from any academic area interested in entrepreneurship. Swartz Creek junior Devin Murphy is the pledge class educator for ENT. He said the Haunted Yard is their biggest fundraiser of the year, usually bringing in between $1,000-2,000 each year. Samantha Pina, graduate student and ENT alumna said the money is used to send brothers to leadership conferences throughout the year. “It’s a great way to give back to the community in a way that is untraditional,” Pina said. local businesses in Mount Pleasant. The money raised goes towards the Sally and John Goodrow Fund in Mount Pleasant. The Goodrow Fund is an emergency fund for community members to pay for food, gas, hotels or medical bills. “That’s something the Mount Pleasant community has really taken to because it helps them, specifically,” Pina said. Circle K and Key Club are part of Kiwanis International, an organization dedicated to improving communities through service projects and fundraisers. The CMU chapter of Circle K was founded in 2003 and is open to anyone on campus who likes volunteering. Dearborn senior John Deutschman, service chair of the CMU chapter, said students who need service hours can reach out to Circle K to participate in service projects, even if they aren’t members. “Once they find out how fun it is, they usually join,” Deutschman said. “They don’t have to be members, but they probably will be.” Circle K has been volunteering at the Haunted Yard for eight years. It is their biggest fundraiser of the year. They typically use the money to fund service projects by paying for gas to travel and for other supplies they may need, depending on the project. They also use the money to plan social events with other Circle K chapters throughout Michigan.

WESTERN WEDNESDAY Football aims to end losing streak to WMU; faces freshman quarterback By Dylan Goetz Assistant Sports Editor sports@cm-life.com
Central Michigan football is not getting ahead of itself. Western Michigan quarterback Jon Wassink suffered a broken collarbone in the fourth quarter against Eastern Michigan on Oct. 21. Backup freshman quarterback Reece Goddard proved up to the challenge, however, as he led the Broncos to a 2017 win in overtime. Before his injury, Wassink led the conference in passing efficiency and finished the EMU game completing 16-for-24 passes for 190 yards and a touchdown. CMU (4-4, 2-2 in MidAmerican Conference) takes on rival WMU (5-3, 3-1 in MAC) at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 1 at Waldo Stadium in Kalamazoo. The game will be aired on ESPN2. Head coach John Bonamego said Wassink’s injury won’t affect the game plan too greatly, but knows the different skillset that Goddard offers. “(Goddard’s) a different style of player,” Bonamego said. “He’s coming into a situation where he has a lot of talent around him with an excellent offensive line two of the better (running) backs in our conference.” First-year WMU head coach Tim Lester said the Broncos can still efficiently run the offense without Wassink.

“(Goddard) is going to go out there and make a play, run around a little bit and make some throws that everyone’s going to say, ‘Wow!’ and you might say ‘Oh no!” too sometimes, but that’s the exciting part,” Lester said. Lester noted Goddard gives the offense some running ability from the quarterback position — something Wassink did not offer at the position. In his brief stint against EMU, Goddard tallied 20 yards rushing and two
completions for 12 yards. CMU’s spread offense was in full form against Ball State on Oct. 21. The Chippewas scored seven offensive touchdowns in a 56-9 rout. Last season, WMU crushed CMU in Kelly/Shorts Stadium, 49-10. “That is what they do,” Bonamego said. “They are built to run the football and play defense. That’s been (WMU’s) formula for winning this year.” The Broncos have dominated the
rivalry in recent years. WMU has won five of the last six games and the last three in the series. But, those wins came under former head coach P.J. Fleck, who is now at Minnesota. After practice on Oct. 25, Bonamego left the team with a few words to explain the importance of the rivalry game. “You have to understand the importance of this game,” Bonamego said. “It’s one to remember. It’s bigger than you.” Bonamego didn’t mention the words
“Western Michigan” during his postpractice interiew. “There’s not really (an unwritten rule,”) Bonamego said. “I just don’t like to say it.” The Chippewas and Broncos first met in 1907 and WMU leads the alltime series 48-37-2. The teams compete for the victory cannon trophy, which represents the cannons shot at both Kelly/Shorts Stadium and Waldo Stadium.

Armed with rivalry experience, Soccer finishes season with Morris ready for Western game win over Eastern Michigan By Evan Petzold Staff Reporter

Quarterback Shane Morris is making the transition from one rivalry to another. From playing for the University of Michigan in “The Game” against Ohio State, to the Central Michigan football team’s upcoming rivalry game against Western Michigan, Morris knows the intensity a rivalry brings. “I know the vibe around this building has the same energy and the same attitude about the Western (Michigan) rivalry as it was about the other one,” the transfer graduate student said. “I love playing in rivalry games. It’s fun. The fans get in it, the players get in it, and it’s a great experience.” CMU plays the Broncos at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 1 at Waldo Stadium in Kalamazoo. During his lone season as a Chippewa, Morris has developed a strong dislike for the Broncos. “I’m picking up on how serious these guys are about this rivalry,” Morris said. “It means so much to them. They hate Western and I hate them now too. I don’t know much about Western, but I know I don’t like them.” Head coach John Bonamego said the two rivalries are very similar in the passion between the programs. He believes Morris is ready for the task at hand. Bonamego has been emphasizing the rivalry game to the entire team all season. “It’s not something we talk about just this week,” Bonamego said. “It’s something I touch on at training camp. The guys in the program are aware of what the
Thursday afternoon's season finale against in-state rival Eastern Michigan was meaningless in terms of playoff contention for Central Michigan soccer. However, the Chippewas’ four-goal second half effort was anything but. With the 4-1 win in the final

other teams in the league are doing, but especially with the school in the southwest side of the state.” Fifth-year senior wide receiver Corey Willis sat down with Morris when he arrived to discuss the significance of the WMU rivalry. “I told Shane it’s always going to be Western (Michigan) when we look at the season,” Willis said. “If he goes out and plays well, it’ll be just like any other game.” Willis has been in the Chippewas’ program since 2013, in which CMU is 1-3 against the Broncos. The only win against WMU came during Willis’ redshirt year. “When I came in as a freshman, it was impossible to know what type of game it is until you get in it,” Willis said. “Now, it means everything. It’s always going to be a great game.” The senior receiver has caught passes from Morris and current Dallas Cowboys backup quarterback Cooper Rush. After catching 23 passes for four touchdowns this season, Willis has a good feel for the difference between the two quarterbacks. “They are different types of players,” Willis said. “Cooper
loved to put a lot of touch on the ball, but Shane can make any throw just because of his arm strength.” Having Willis and senior wide receiver Tyler Conklin back from injury has helped Morris, he said. “It’s huge for us,” Morris said. “Having three or four guys that can make plays down field and run with the ball in their hands makes it a lot easier on me.” Through eight games, Morris has completed 170 of his 300 passes for 1,966 yards, 16 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. However, he knows he has improvements to make for CMU to end its losing streak against WMU. “I have to do a better job of taking care of the ball,” Morris said. “I have more interceptions than I want. That’s on me. As a leader of the offense and of this team, I have to do better.” The next achievement for Morris to accomplish as a CMU leader is to win a rivalry game. “I’m old,” Morris said. “I’ve played a lot of football and I understand what it means for a school and a program to get a win over a rival team. “I’m still excited about (CMU) and I love everything about it. I’m happy to be here.”
game of the 2017 season, CMU finishes with an overall record of 8-8-3 and a Mid-American Conference record of 3-6-2. It marks the first time since 2014 that CMU will miss the MAC Tournament. "I think it says a lot," said head coach Peter McGahey. "You can't underestimate that spirit and how hard today was." Five seniors competed in their final match for CMU, including Megan Sweeney,
McKay Matheson, Jamie Rademacher, Savannah Beetcher and Lauren Sherry. McGahey reflected how special the win was for himself and a great way to give the seniors one last memory. "Today, what is special is that the them (seniors) and the team really created a special and powerful way to send the seniors off," McGahey said. "I could not be prouder or happier about that."
