COLLEGE OF BUSINESS PREPARES FOR LARGEST MAKE-A-PITCH COMPETITION A total of 38 student teams will compete in the Make-APitch competition on Dec. 6, an increase from the previously recorded-high of 26 that competed last year.

The event takes place 6-9 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 6 in the Grawn Hall atrium. This will be the eighth Make-APitch competition.

One change this year is that the competition will take place in the new Grawn Hall atrium, instead of the classroom Grawn 151, where is was held in previous years.

With the amount of new space the atrium provides, it has allowed for the competition to expand the number

of teams participating, as well as seating around 120 spectators.

Julie Baker, Central Michigan Entrepreneurship Institute executive secretary, said the atrium will make a big difference in the way things are done during the competition.

“The increase in number has a lot to do with the fact we have the atrium now,” Baker said. “Before we were limited to the number of people we could put in there, and now we’re thinking, ‘Oh my gosh we have this huge space — how are we going to fill it?’”

This year’s competition

will also feature a larger social media and radio presence than previous years, with radio station 91.5 The Mountain broadcasting the event live.

Grand Rapids senior Jessica Meyers will be livetweeting the event along with members of the Epsilon Nu Tau fraternity. The fraternity will document the event through Central Michigan University’s Snapchat story.

Registration to compete closed Nov. 30.

SAC weight room receives new equipment, to reopen soon

Following a six-month closure after a historic summer rainstorm, the Student Activity Center Weight Training Center is close to reopening for the Spring 2018 semester.

Repairs only cost the university $156,164.

The first wave of custom-ordered workout equipment, such as squat racks and benches, for the weight training center have been installed. While the room itself was promptly renovated with new floors and fresh paint, the workout equipment had yet to arrive to complete the project.

A majority of the existing equipment was deemed unsafe by various consultants in early August, due to rust that would develop and pathogens that could exist in the porous surfaces of the equipment, such as bench cushions.

By late August, the process of ordering new equipment had begun. It has been an ongoing project since — overseen by Stan Shingles, assistant vice president of University Recreation.

Shingles said the process has taken longer

than expected due to the large amount of custom equipment that was ordered, in addition to being placed on a waitlist behind other orders.

"We were hoping that with everything that we were doing that we might be open in October," Shingles said. "But based on what we wanted, and needed, that's when we ran into the manufacturing challenges."

The only items that remain from before the flood are the fans and mirrors on the walls. A wood podium also survived the flooding in good condition, and will now stand at the front of the room as a memento of sustainability, Shingles said.

About 30 percent of the new equipment arrived Nov. 27 and was installed by a vendor in Chicago.

The rest is expected to be in place within the next two weeks.

In the meantime, CMU students have had to adjust their workouts since there is only one workout room available — on the upper floor of the SAC. Fenton sophomore Nick Bills now goes to Planet Fitness for his workouts.

“It was easier to just walk across the street, rather than have to get in the car and drive across town,” Bills said.

times when the fitness room is less crowded, or changing their workouts altogether based on what equipment is available.

Dundee junior Jonah Shultz has been eagerly awaiting the reopening of the Weight Training Center. He has since been coming to the SAC in the morning to avoid the large crowd of people in the fitness room.

“I definitely have to come at a time when there’s less people, because everyone is upstairs now that (the weight room) closed,” Shultz said. “Everyone that

would go downstairs is now up here, so it’s double the amount of people.”

While the exact date of reopening is still uncertain, Shingles and his colleagues are aware what the weight room means to students. They are working to have it open by the start of next year.

“We knew that we were under-resourced in our fitness center from an equipment standpoint, and then the flood came," Shingles said. "And all of a sudden the freshman from 2017 will have a brandnew facility. No other class can say that."

Adding menstrual items to

bathrooms around campus shows university cares for students When the Student Government Association proposed adding menstrual items to campus bathrooms during its Nov. 27 meeting, the reaction on social media was ranged from support to vehement disapproval.

“So, students complain that the cost of tuition is too high. So, the university is going to reduce the number EDITORIAL of required credit hours to graduate, thus saving students money,” one commenter posted.

“In exchange the students now want free menstrual products. Could I ask, why are you going to college?”

Another poster commented: “Are you kidding me? Expect the government/ school to provide personal hygiene products for free?”

There were some, however, who were supportive of the action and urged Central Michigan University’s administration to look into the feasibility of providing free maxi pads or tampons in bathrooms.

They pointed out the money it would save students, the inclusivity it would foster by placing them in all bathrooms and the fact that sometimes a period can sneak up on someone.

Count us among those supporters.

According to Fall 2016 statistics, more than half of students on campus are women — the predominant demographic that menstruation affects the most. By having them in all bathrooms around campus, this also is a benefit for our transgender or gender-nonconforming students who might also menstruate.

The idea of providing free menstrual items in bathrooms around campus should not be a controversial decision.

It would be ridiculous if students were expected to carry around their own rolls

of toilet paper, bar of soap and handtowels.

Throughout the day, it’s acknowledged that you’ll need to use a campus restroom. You can’t control that.

Menstruation is not something that can be controlled.

It is not always regular in timing, nor is it the same severity each time of the month. Menstruation is something that happens. If it is in the power of the university to help those who have periods, then it shouldn’t be that much of a stretch to ask for aid.

This isn’t a new idea.

Emory University, the University of Arizona, Brown University, Reed College and the University of Minnesota all have already implemented free tampons and maxi pads in bathrooms around campus. At Columbia University, menstrual items are free upon request at their student health centers.

Adding menstrual items to bathrooms around campus would not dent the finances of the university. It would not cause for a tuition hike. If anything, it would assist students who use these items — students who could run to the bathroom and snag a free tampon if they randomly started their period during class, rather than going home to avoid potential embarrassment.

Bringing it before the Academic Senate — having faculty and staff look over this proposal — would drive the message home that the university does care for its students by providing even the smallest help it can.

Simply because an idea doesn’t benefit you directly, if you are one of the many on campus who do not get a period, does this mean the idea is invalid? The answer is no.

If you’re one of the few saying this is a bad idea, it might be time for a little self-reflection.

Good deeds shouldn’t be based on whether they only effect ourselves.

This is one good deed which could go a long way.

Federal appeals court rules for university in discrimination lawsuit

A federal appeals court has ruled in Central Michigan University’s favor in a discrimination lawsuit filed by a former journalism faculty member.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit on Nov. 30 reaffirmed a U.S. District Court decision, according to a court opinion.

Kubik accused the journalism department of discrimination after it declined to grant her a tenure-extension request after she delivered a child in April 2013.

She filed a lawsuit in U.S. District Court in June 2015, alleging sex (pregnancy) discrimination, a hostile work environment and retaliation under Title VII and the Elliott-Larsen Civil Rights Act (ECLRA).

The lawsuit named the CMU Board of Trustees and five others, who were

current or former university employees, as defendants. The case was dismissed in November 2016

by U.S. District Judge Thomas L. Ludington.

SARA KUBIK The federal court ruled that Kubik failed to establish evidence for any of her claims.

Kubik appealed the decision.

On Dec. 1, Kubik said she believes the case was “fair under the law.”

“I’m disappointed in the ultimate ruling, but I’m incredibly proud of what was accomplished,” she said. “This was a very big lawsuit.”

Kubik was hired at CMU in Fall 2011 as a tenure-track assistant professor.

She was reappointed in Fall 2012, according to court records.

Maria Marron, then-journalism department chair, and Salma Ghanem,

then-CCFA dean, told Kubik her scholarly progress was “limited.” They advised her to improve her scholarly output.

Kubik informed CMU she was pregnant with her second child in January 2013. She requested a tenure extension later in the spring due to her pregnancy and gave birth in April 2013, according to court documents.

One day after giving birth, Marron emailed Kubik and stated students were “expressing concern about [adjunct professors] having to grade their final projects and exams,” according to court records. Marron asked Kubik if she could grade after returning from leave.

In an email to Central Michigan Life on Dec. 2, Marron said she did so under the “expressed instruction” of the CCFA dean.

A personal committee of the journalism department, which at the time included Marron, current journalism chair Timothy Boudreau and professor Lori Brost, denied Kubik’s tenure-ex-

tension request in May 2013. All three were listed as defendants in the lawsuit.

In September 2013, Kubik filed a discrimination complaint with the Office of Civil Rights and Institutional Equality.

She accused the journalism department of discrimination after failing to grant her tenure-extension request.

The personal committee met later in September 2013 and voted against reappointing Kubik, citing her lack of scholarly activity and limited service.

According to court records, Kubik’s only scholarship, or academic work, at the time was a paper at a state conference.

Kubik refiled her OCRIE complaint in October 2013. She alleged discrimination and a hostile work environment, according to a court document. The following month, Gealt reappointed Kubik after Ghanem dissented from the department’s recommendation.

Both Gealt and Ghanem told Kubik she needed to improve her scholarship.

In April 2014, OCRIE found that

Marron created a hostile work environment but her conduct “did not impermissibly affect Kubik’s reappointment process,” according to court records.

Marron offered a rebuttal.

Kubik filed a complaint with the Equal Employment Commission later that month. In May 2014, CMU granted Kubik a tenure-extension request.

The personal committee met again in September of that year and again voted against Kubik’s reappointment, again citing her scholarship and service.

Speaking with CM Life on Friday, Boudreau wished Kubik well and reiterated the personal committee’s stance.

In October 2014, Kubik filed another OCRIE complaint. Hinck and Gealt agreed against her reappointment, both citing her scholarship.

CM Life reached out to Brost, Hinck and Gealt on Friday afternoon for comment for this story.

“I did what I did,” Kubik said. “Now it’s time to move on.”

Student conducts spinal cord injury research

Hartland graduate student Andrew Stewart has dedicated nearly five years of his life to finding a cure for spinal cord injuries.

Stewart chose spinal cord injury research in 2009 after his brother was involved in an accident that damaged his spinal cord and left him paralyzed in a wheelchair.

“He had fallen from a third-story balcony onto a concrete slab,” Stewart said. “That’s what moved me to pursue a career in research to find a cure for spinal cord injuries.”

Stewart is in the neuroscience program of the College of Humanities and Social and Behavioral Sciences. He is planning to graduate in May 2018 with a doctorate in neuroscience.

Stewart received his bachelor’s degree in kinesiology in 2012 from University of Michigan and came to Central Michigan University in 2013 to begin graduate research.

Field Neurosciences Institute (FNI) Laboratory for Restorative Neurology in the Health Professions Building.

The lab is co-directed by neuroscience program director Gary Dunbar and College of Medicine faculty member Julien Rossignol.

Dunbar said undergraduate and graduate students work together in the lab, learning about neurodegenerative diseases like Huntington’s disease,

Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease. They also focus on other neurological problems like traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries and brain cancer.

In his research, Stewart has been using genetically-altered stem cells to increase production of a protein that stimulates the growth and regeneration of axons, which allow communication between the brain and the body.

When the spinal cord is damaged, communication is disrupted at the site of the injury. This can cause loss of feeling and movement. His goal is to restore that communication.

Stewart attempted to treat spinal cord injuries in rats by transplanting these genetically-altered stem cells at the site of the injury. He said he saw a lot of axons grow into the transplantation site.

Some rats regained function in the spinal cord. He is unsure whether or not the regrowth of axons and the restoration of spinal cord function were related. His research is now focused on finding out.

Stewart said he chose to be part of FNI because he liked “the sense of cohesiveness amongst the students.” Even though students are working on their own projects, there is a large amount of collaboration that happens in the lab.

“The working environment is so important to being able to be productive,” Stewart said. “Being able to pursue spinal cord injury work as well as the environment within the lab (and) the community within the lab, are the two biggest reasons why I came here.”

Rossignol explained the challenges

Stewart faced when he first came to CMU. Stewart was dead set on doing research on spinal cord injuries, but his professors didn’t have much experience in that subject. He had to do a lot of work on his own and had to learn as he went. "(Stewart) has a huge interest in the spinal cord, which is a little out of our expertise. He took the time to learn everything he could and we learned with him,” Rossignol said.

Stewart has been a first author on several publications regarding his research projects and co-authored on some others, Dunbar said.

Currently working on his doctoral dissertation, Stewart is attempting to find a way to get the axons to grow enough to reconnect the spinal cord at the injury site.

After graduating from CMU with his doctorate, Stewart plans to continue postdoctoral research at another university in the Midwest. He said he is looking at a few, but hasn’t made a decision yet.

Rossignol said Stewart is extremely dedicated to his work.

“I am amazed by the amount of work he does,” Rossignol said. “He doesn’t count his hours. He is always working.”

Travel Channel’s ‘Man v. Food’ TV show films at Dog Central

Paul McFall opened up Dog Central in 2012 because he said there were no good late night food options beside fast food.

Five years later — McFall’s business has become a popular restaurant in downtown Mount Pleasant. It might even become nationally famous.

Dog Central, 111 E. Michigan St., will to appear on the Travel Channel’s TV show, “Man v. Food.” Filming took place all day Nov. 30 The show has been airing since 2008. It travels around the U.S. to different businesses, showcasing their food and competing in a challenge for each restaurant.

Filming took place during two different time slots: noon-1 p.m. and 4-6 p.m. The earlier filming consisted of environmental shots of the business, employee interviews and footage of the food being made.

During the earlier filming, “Man v.

Food” host Casey Webb walked around

to different tables talking with customers about the food and interviewing them.

The second portion of filming included close-up shots of the food for the Dog Central eating challenge, which Webb later competed in.

The eating challenge consists of three foot long hot dogs, an order of fries, a stack of onion rings and a 20 ounce drink.

Contestants must finish the food in 25 minutes or less, if they do — the meal is free, they win a T-shirt and receive $10.

If the challenger loses, they must pay the $25 bill.

McFall, who is a Central Michigan University alumnus, said the opportunity came in August when the Travel Channel contacted him. Executives said they were casting the next season of “Man v. Food” and asked if he would be interested.

“We were thrilled to have the Dog Central challenge featured on ‘Man v.

Food’ and showcase our Michigan-made hot dog,” he said.

Travel Channel found the Dog Central website and was interested in the challenge they had, McFall said. The program also liked that it was located in a college town.

Bob Larson, executive vice president and head of production for Sharp Entertainment, which produces “Man v. Food”, is a CMU alumnus. He graduated in 1988 with a degree in finance and accounting.

Originally from the Kalamazoo area, Larson has lived in New York for almost 25 years.

While Larson doesn’t have direct influence in the places picked for the show — he was thrilled to have his college town featured. "(Sharp Entertainment) looks for places, one of a kind restaurants that are a little bit off the radar but not so off the radar that the Travel Channel audience can’t find them,” Larson said. “To my knowledge this is actually the first time we’ve been in Mount Pleasant, so I was totally psyched.”

at Dog Central for four years. He was involved during the filming by helping assemble and make the food while producers shot close-ups.

“Overall it was great for the business,” Victor said. “We’re kind of excited to see what the follow up is going to be just from the exposure (the show brings.)”

Paul McFall said the opportunity

presents great exposure for Dog Central not just in the state, but around the U.S. “My family and my parents have always gone around when we traveled and sought out places that were on ‘Man v. Food,’” he said. “Hopefully there’s other people out there that will do the same thing and that will lead them to us.”

Central Michigan football is headed to Boise, Idaho to face Wyoming in the 2017 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl.

The game will be played at 4 p.m. Friday, Dec. 22. The game will be aired on ESPN and available to stream on the WatchESPN app.

CMU has reached a bowl game in five of the last six years. In 2014, the Chippewas fell to Western Kentucky, 49-48 in the Bahamas Bowl.

CMU lost to Minnesota 21-14 in the 2015 Quick Lane Bowl.

In last season’s Miami Beach Bowl, the Chippewas were routed by Tulsa 55-10.

CMU finished the regular season with an 8-4 (6-2 in Mid-American Conference) record.

The Chippewas won the last five games of conference play and finished second in the MAC West Division.

Wyoming finished the regular season with a 7-5 record. The Cowboys participate in the Mountain West Conference. They are led by junior quarterback Josh Allen who is a projected first round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.

“We want to send the seniors out and let

them finish their careers with a bowl win,” Bonamego said. “It would really put an exclamation point on their careers.”

This is CMU’s 11th bowl game in program history. The Chippewas hold a 3-7 record in bowl play — dating back to the California Bowl against San Jose State in 1990. The Chippewas have not won a bowl game since the 2012 Little Caesars Pizza Bowl against Western Kentucky.

“I think (players) are going to get a lot from the experience,” Bonamego said. “There is a lot to be said about branching out and seeing another part of the country.”

Graduate transfer quarterback Shane Morris said he’s excited to play against Allen.

“He’s projected to go pretty high in the (NFL) draft next year so it will be a good challenge for me and the team,” Morris said.

Bonamego was unprepared to comment on Allen because he found out about the bowl just moments before it was announced in the press conference.

Senior defensive end Joe Ostman gave his perspective on the announcement.

“It would be huge for us,” defensive end Joe Ostman said. “We aren’t focused on where the game is and who the game is against. We need to win.”
