Friends remember LaPointe as ‘happiest guy on Earth’ By Melissa Frick Senior Reporter news@cm-life.com

Feelin’ good, livin’ great. That was the motto Tim LaPointe lived his life by – it was a phrase that embodied his optimism and unbridled enthusiasm for life. He repeated the phrase daily to remind others, and himself, to live their best lives. Those four words will carry on LaPointe’s spirit for his friends and family, who remember him as a cheerful and bright man who was full of life, right up until his sudden death. LaPointe was killed in a head-on car crash on Dec. 30 in Gratiot County. The Ypsilanti junior at Central Michigan University was less than a month away from his 21st birthday. Zachary Morgan, 26, of Gladwin, a student at Mid-Michigan Community College, was also killed in the crash. Despite being taken away from his loved ones too soon, LaPointe will forever be remembered as a warm and compassionate friend to all who met him, said his brother, John LaPointe. “He truly was the happiest guy on Earth,” John LaPointe, 22, said. “If anyone deserved to be happy, it was him.” Timothy Paul LaPointe was born on Jan. 25, 1999 to his parents, Todd and Christine LaPointe. He attended Keystone Academy, a National Heritage Academy charter school in Ypsilanti, where he graduated in 2017. He then went on to major in marketing at CMU and held various leadership roles in the business fraternity, Pi Sigma Epsilon. Tim LaPointe would’ve been the first in his immediate family to graduate from college, his brother said. “Growing up, Tim was my little brother, but he always seemed

like he was 80 years old,” John LaPointe recalled. “He was so goal-driven. When he wanted to do something, he did it.” That didn’t just include academic goals. John LaPointe recalled that when Tim stuck up for his friends, he was a force not to be reckoned with. During high school, one of Tim’s friends was upset about being cut from the basketball team, John remembered. Without hesitation, Tim marched up to the team’s coach and convinced him

that his friend deserved to stay on the team, resulting in his friend being allowed back on the team. “He was so bubbly, always gassing everybody up,” John said. While Tim LaPointe loved his family in Ypsilanti, he found his second family in the friends he made at CMU. His best friend, Connor Waple, described their tight-knit friend group as inseparable. The group did everything together, Waple said – from making meals together, to studying together at the library, to celebrating “Secret Santa” at Christmas. LaPointe and Waple, a Waterford junior, both acted as “the dads” of the friend group, said Detroit senior Jaime Kesteloot, Waple’s girlfriend. They always made sure to take care of their friends and look out for one another. “It honestly was the definition of a family,” Kesteloot said. Waple said if he could describe his best friend in three words, it would be “passionate,” “confident,” and “caring.” Aside from spending time with friends, Tim LaPointe loved playing basketball and listening to music. Although he misses his brother, John LaPointe said he finds solace in knowing how happy Tim was before he died. The two brothers celebrated John’s birthday together on Dec. 27, a few days before Tim’s death, and John remembers Tim telling him how he was at the happiest point of his life. “Yes his life was taken short, but knowing he was truly living his best life and loved everything about his life at the time, helps me cope with all this,” John LaPointe said. Tim LaPointe is survived by his parents, as well as his five siblings: Joshua, Michael, John, Daniel and Emma. His funeral service took place Monday, Jan. 6, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Whittaker, Michigan. He was buried at Marble Park Cemetery next to his grandfather, Michael Hartmann.

Elliott motions to withdraw plea, withdraw prison sentence By Melissa Frick Senior Reporter news@cm-life.com

Defense attorneys for former Central Michigan University student Ian Elliott have filed a motion to withdraw Elliott’s no contest plea on a third-degree Criminal Sexual Conduct charge after an internal investigation by the Michigan Attorney General’s office found wrongdoing by the prosecutor who handled the case. Attorney Joe Barberi filed the motion Jan. 10 asking to withdraw Elliott’s no contest plea on one count of third-degree Criminal Sexual Conduct and vacate his 366-day prison sentence. Elliott will appear in Isabella County Trial Court at 3 p.m. Friday, Jan. 17. He is also expected to enter a no contest plea to a reduced charge of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct. Judge Eric. R. Janes will decide whether to grant the motion. Elliott, former CMU Student Government Association president, pleaded no contest to one count of third-degree CSC on Aug. 2. He was sentenced to serve one year and one day in prison, and is serving his sentence in St. Louis Correctional Facility. As part of the agreement, Elliott was required to register

as a sex offender in Michigan for the rest of his life. The case was prosecuted by former Assistant Attorney General Brian Kolodziej, who resigned in September after it was discovered that he had an inappropriate relationship with a victim in Elliott’s criminal sexual assault case. After Attorney General Dana Nessel led a two-month internal investigation into Kolodziej’s wrongdoing, she agreed not to contest Elliott’s motion to withdraw his plea. As part of the agreement between Nessel and BRIAN Elliott’s defense attorneys, KOLODZIEJ Elliott will enter a no contest plea to a reduced charge of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct if the court grants his motion. Barberi told Central Michigan Life he is “cautiously optimistic” the motion will be granted by the court. The defense attorney said he will speak more after Friday’s hearing about his previous conversations with Nessel regarding Kolodziej’s investigation. Kolodziej’s conduct is being investigated by Michigan State Police.

ecky Rees started her post graduate career as a horse-back riding instructor. She succeeded the Horse Management Program at Michigan State University with an obstacle that her classmates didn’t have to face. She was born deaf. Rees was running a horse-back riding business during the summer but she had to close it down during the winter because the horses couldn’t stand the cold Michigan winters. Rees initially started her American Sign Language teaching career in 2008 at Baker College to earn more funds for business to build an indoor riding facility. She ended up falling in love with teaching the language and she never looked back. Rees has been an ASL Instructor in the Communication Disorders Department at Central Michigan University since the fall semester of 2011. Rees teaches ASL at CMU to bridge the gap between the Deaf and hearing world on campus and to spread more awareness about the Deaf culture. “A little bit of understanding and compassion can go a long way in improving this world,” said Rees. Rees sat down with a reporter to discuss her experience of living in the Deaf world.

Q&A

What made you want to become an ASL teacher?

My sister and I were born deaf in both ears. It was determined our auditory nerves in both ears were damaged. My sister and I were the only ones deaf in our family. A doctor told my parents both my sister and I are perfect candidates for cochlear implants, but our family doctor told my parents that he wouldn’t recommend having it done on us because it was a fairly new thing at the time and that if the implants didn’t work, we’d lose any residual hearing we had at the time.

What are your thoughts on cochlear implants? I was taught SEE (Signing Exact English) during preschool/kindergarten in a Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing program that Big Rapids had at the time, and I was mainstreamed

for most of my life other than having to go to the special resources room. I had to wear a phonic ear (an FM system) until I hit eighth grade and was able to persuade my speech therapist into allowing me to continue my schooling with just my hearing aids. Then I used interpreters for my high school graduation, and for all my college education.

How has your family adapted to your deafness? Both my parents are hearing. My dad’s favorite sign was “cookie,” but both parents would sign simple signs, like good morning, good night, I love you, bathroom, time to go, you OK? My mom knew the fingerspelled alphabet. Mainly they spoke to me and my sister, and while there has been some communication break-downs, we got along well. My sister and I were taught to lip-read from a young age.

My view on cochlear implants are positive, but they have to be right for the person who uses it. In my case, I don’t think they’re a good fit for me until I get older. I live on a farm where I can get beat up, and because of where the implants are put in it can become extremely painful. I also used to scuba dive, and have thought about getting back into it, but I’ve been told that it is not advised to scuba dive with cochlear implants. I figured when I get older I’ll be done with running a farm, and not excited about scuba-diving, so that would be a perfect time. I do have negative views of the doctors who constantly push CIs toward patients, saying it’s the only thing that will “fix” the hearing issue.

I’m 41 years old and was born and raised in Stanwood, Michigan, which is about 10-15 minutes south of Big Rapids.

I became an ASL instructor by accident. Back in about 2005-2007, I was running a horse-back riding lesson program, but it had to be shut down during the winter because I didn’t have an indoor arena and I never felt comfortable giving lessons during the winter. In 2007, I was talking to an interpreter who used to work for me, telling her how it was difficult to bring in income during the winter, and she suggested that I teach ASL at a local college. So I started teaching at Baker College of Muskegon during the winter of 2008. My goal was to be able to bring in enough money so that I could have an indoor arena built and continue giving horse-back riding lessons. Teaching ASL was supposed to be a temporary job, but I enjoyed it so much that I stopped giving horse-back riding lessons in 2010-2011 and started working for CMU when a position opened up. That indoor arena never got built.

Rebecca Rees Meet the Deaf ASL instructor here who loves to ride horses when she isn’t helping her students. Rees sat down with us to talk about living in her hearing-impaired world. Katie Hixson ■ Staff Reporter

I really wanted to become a veterinarian, but it was a difficult program. I ended up dropping out of pre-veterinary medicine at Ferris State University; organic chemistry was difficult. Then I took the Horse Management Program at Michigan State University. After getting my certification, I felt I wasn’t ready to move on so I continued to attend Michigan State University to earn my Bachelor’s Degree in Animal Sciences with specialization in Agribusiness. When I started MSU, I met a Deaf lady who became a great friend and roommate to me. She signed pure ASL, so she taught me ASL as she hated SEE. During this time I met Kendra Miller, who also happens to be an ASL instructor at CMU, and is my current office buddy.

How do you identify in the deaf community? I don’t know how I identify myself, whether it’d be Deaf or deaf. I didn’t really grow up in a strong Deaf environment. In the time that I was at MSU was when I spent the most time in the Deaf world. Currently, anything Deaf culture-related I’m involved in is with CMU. My family is hearing, and I spend more time in the hearing world than I do in the Deaf world. There are no Deaf people living in my area. I’m okay with that, right now I’m much more family-orientated and would prefer to be with my family than spending time anywhere else. Right now, I consider myself hard of hearing. it. We also didn’t think anyone was watching. We thought it was a flop and nobody would watch. So, when we got out, we were like “oh wow.” We didn’t expect that reaction when we left.

BLAZING A TRAIL FORWARD Alumnus shares his experiences navigating campus and what we can do to help students with disabilites

Donning his cap and gown, the Vestaburg, Michigan senior was shown to the elevator and entered McGuirk Arena from a special access door, where he joined more than 1,300 other students waiting for their names to be called during the December 2019 commencement ceremony. Navigating roadblocks while traveling from point A to point B on Central Michigan University’s campus is a challenge that Crosby knows all too well. He was born with spina bifida: a condition that created a hole in his vertebrae that exposed the spinal cord and required surgery. The operation resulted in him losing the ability to use his legs. In the early hours of Dec. 14, Crosby posted a message on Facebook to ease his restlessness before the commencement ceremony. Crosby’s words were echoed by President Bob Davies during his address to graduates. “I’m not here to follow the footsteps laid before me,” President Bob Davies said. “I’m here to blaze new trails, so that when I blaze those new trails others can blaze their own trails. Torey Crosby, you are an inspiration to many, for what you do, and for the way you act.” Davies thanked Crosby, and asked him to go to his parents sitting in the front row and thank them for raising him. Crosby wheeled up the aisle to the sound of applause. From his unique perspective, Crosby identifies problems others don’t seem to see. Prior to commencement, Crosby contacted his colleagues to point out that the university’s commencement application didn’t give him an opportunity to arrange his wheelchair accommodations. He emailed the director of commencement ceremonies, and his message was passed on to a team that worked with him so that he could participate in commencement. “I find different ways to do the things I want to do,” Crosby said.

He credits his parents for instilling the mindset in him that he can do anything that other people can do. It’s one of the reasons why he doesn’t refer to himself as disabled, but differently-abled. His challenges navigating CMU’s campus in a wheelchair began in middle school, when Crosby was on a field-trip with his Spanish Club. Several different schools attended an event at the Bovee University Center. Crosby remembers students being led to the building’s main entrance where they climbed the steps to get to the building’s second floor. Though there was an elevator nearby, no one in the group was able to locate it. “Luckily the group I was in had some football players who hauled me up the steps,” Crosby said. The classmates who carried him had played it off like it wasn’t a big deal, but it was a very big deal to Crosby. He thought for a moment that he wouldn’t be able to participate in the field-trip that he’d been looking forward to. Crosby’s story highlights the issue that elevators can be “out of sight, out of mind.” Putting up more signs, including ones that hang from the ceiling so that they’re more visible, could be a part of the solution. He believes more can be done than just having a single sign on the wall next to the elevator. An example of better signage is the office for Student Disability Services, located inside the Charles V. Park Library. It is past a couple automatic glass-doors, through a maze of aisles lined by desks and moving bookshelves, with many signs to guide the way. Some signs hang from the ceiling with large lettering, like you might typically find in a hospital or airport. Others are on the walls with directions in braille, although one of them can’t be read because there is a glass-door that slides in front of it when you get close. “The Student Disability Services Office can be tricky to find at first,” Veith said. “However, it is my understanding that it was intentionally placed in the current location to give students more privacy.” People on campus are listening to

what he has to say. Student Disability Services Office Director Michelle Veith said she hadn’t heard about elevators being difficult to find, but said she would be happy to pass along the information as well as the signage suggestions to Facilities Management. She also encouraged students who have concerns that relate to disability to reach out to the Student Disability Services. If it’s not within the purview of the SDS, they will work to connect the student to the right people so that their needs can be properly addressed. Crosswalks are another obstacle that a person with Crosby’s needs must think about every day. In his wheelchair, Crosby is harder for drivers to see because he sits low to the ground. Some drivers he encounters are impatient at the fact that it takes him more time to cross. Some drivers seem hostile to him because he’s in a wheelchair. He describes the looks drivers give him – as if he’d wronged them. Sometimes they make gestures telling Crosby to “hurry up.” Some even start inching forward while he’s still in the middle of crossing, the same thing that would happen if the driver didn’t see Crosby, making it all the more nerve wracking for him. He goes out of his way to look for crosswalks that are less busy, or avoids them altogether.

It gets worse in the winter. Not just the conditions of the crosswalks, but the parking lot and sidewalk system in general. After a storm, Facilities Management focus on maintaining the “critical path.” These are among the first walkways to be cleared when it comes to snow and ice removal. Inclement weather is an inconvenience to all of us, but to somebody like Crosby it can quickly become more than that. The critical path is necessary because it ensures that people in wheelchairs can move around the campus, as well as see other potential hazards. A busted section of concrete or a drain in the ground becomes like a pothole, damaging the wheelchair or getting it stuck. These could get hidden by snow, so keeping the walkways clear is a safety measure that assists people like Crosby in more ways than one. The critical path graphic is a good resource that shows the location of elevators and automatic doors all across campus. It can be found online. “I’ve had friends and acquaintances of mine who use wheelchairs come to me and ask for a tour because I would be thinking of their needs,” Crosby said. “I remember one of them saying they don’t know how I’ve dealt with this on a daily basis. But that’s where I go back to my philosophy. I don’t let things get in my way.” Crosby’s track-record speaks for itself. Besides wheelchair tennis outside of school, at Southwest Minnesota State University he played wheelchair basketball. He’s had his Dodge Caravan professionally modified with hand-controls that are connected to the foot-pedals, allowing him to drive. He had the same thing done to his vehicle that he uses for hunting. As an intern for University Recreation, Crosby wants to spread this “go get it” philosophy through the work he’s doing with Assistant Vice President Stan Shingles. He wants to bring attention to challenges faced by individuals who have unmet needs, and create new opportunities by advocating for an adaptive recreation program at Central

Michigan University. “Torey’s an exceptional young man,” Shingles said. “He’s very dedicated, extremely passionate, and he wants to do well. I knew him just a little bit because he’s a [Recreation, Parks and Leisure] major. One day he said, ‘I’m looking for an internship,’ so I put him in contact with our staff who screen for that process and hired him at the end of the spring semester.” Since he started, Crosby has worked with University Recreation full-time, participating in staff meetings and getting involved with training and development. He’s working on a proposal for an adaptive recreation program, partly informed by his personal experience with wheelchair sports and the outdoors. It would be geared toward differently-abled individuals, as well as those who may have cognitive differences such as post-traumatic stress. “Torey’s made our staff more purposeful in understanding our students who have disabilities,” Shingles said. “One of the things we haven’t gotten our arms around is what type of adaptive recreation we should be offering. What’s the demand? What’s the need? That’s the work he’s been doing for us.” Make no mistake. Crosby enjoyed his time at Central Michigan University. He sees the people he’s come to know through the years as family. His critique of the campus does not come from a place of malice, but from his recognition that there are areas in which the school is capable of improving. Many situations will have roadblocks for him, Crosby understands that. He wants to make the most of the chance he’s been afforded – to identify these challenges and bring them to the attention of the people who can address them – by creating a positive, lasting dialogue about how to make the campus more accessible to all of its students. As he said in his own words, he’s here to blaze a trail not just for himself, but also for others.

While Central Michigan University students were spending time out of town during winter break, news did not stop in the City of Mount Pleasant. Here are some things students may have missed over the break. Recreational Marijuana The city began accepting applications for recreational marijuana business licenses on Jan. 6 and will continue to accept them until Feb. 28, City Planner Jacob Kain said. He said the city has not received any applications yet but will keep a running tag online of the applications they receive before the deadline. Last year, Mount Pleasant City Commission approved an ordinance that would allow a maximum of three recreational marijuana retailers, two micro businesses, five class A growers and three class B or C growers. Any businesses approved for a license can’t open within 1,000 feet of a K-12 school, or 500 feet of CMU’s campus. Under the ordinance, licenses will be approved by a committee. The committee will choose which applicants get licenses if the number of applicants exceeds the maximum allowed. The criteria includes if the business is already approved for medical marijuana, if they are local business owners and if the owner has past business experience.

New ICRH Executive Director On Jan. 6, the Isabella County Restoration House, a local organization that provides temporary shelter and self-sufficiency programs for homeless individuals and families, hired a new executive director, Dee Obrecht. She has a background in criminal justice and working as an executive director for a child protective services agency for 17 years. Obrecht said she is passionate about preventative programs, so she would like to focus more attention to the self-sufficiency services. But, she will spend her first few months as executive director getting acclimated.

COMMISSION RE-APPOINTS JOSEPH MAYOR FOR 2020 Mount Pleasant City Commissioner Will Joseph was re-appointed as mayor by fellow commissioners and two new commissioners were sworn in at the Jan. 13 Mount Pleasant City Commission meeting. Along with the mayoral vote, Amy Perschbacher was appointed as the new vice mayor, replacing Lori Gillis who served as vice mayor last year. Both Joseph and Perschbacher were chosen in 5-2 votes, with commissioners Petro Tolas and Lori Gillis dissenting votes for both. George Ronan and Mary Alsager were sworn in as city commissioners. They were elected in November and replaced long-time commissioners Kathy Ling and Tony Kulick. City Clerk Jeremy Howard gave a presentation about the 2020 Census. He said banners have been made to promote the census and said that he is still looking for part-time census workers. Commissioners unanimously approved three public meetings to promote and educate the public about the city’s new Master Plan, City Manager Nancy Ridley said. Ridley said feedback indicated that many residents didn’t know there was a new Master Plan. Tolas said he spoke with business owners, who also didn’t know the city was working on it. The commission voted unanimously to schedule a public hearing on Jan. 27 regarding a special assessment for a project on Michigan Street downtown. Ridley said the project would include new sidewalks and pedestrian lighting. She said part of the lighting cost would be charged to the businesses on the street. -Andrew Mullin, Senior Reporter

DON CHIODO Play-by-play broadcaster honored by community after death By Austin Chastain, Sports Editor

During Central Michigan’s final two football games, Adam Jaksa introduced three men on the radio broadcast team. “Adam Jaksa, Don Chiodo and Brock Gutierrez with you in the broadcast booth,” Jaksa said during the Mid-American Conference championship game and New Mexico Bowl. Jaksa and Gutierrez were in the booth calling the games against Miami (Ohio) and San Diego State – Chiodo was with them in spirit. Chiodo, 54, the longtime broadcaster for the CMU football and men’s basketball teams, died in an auto accident Dec. 4 on M-46 near Alma. Over the next three days, three Chippewa teams – women’s basketball, men’s basketball and football – each played. At the women’s basketball game the day after Chiodo’s death, a banner hung in front of the media table and featured Chiodo’s name with the first initial in his last name represented by the Flying C logo. Chiodo was a graduate of CMU in 1990 with a bachelor’s degree in broadcasting. He also was a senior financial advisor at Central Michigan Investment Services LPL since 2004. Chiodo’s family, friends and the CMU community gathered Dec. 9, the Monday following the MAC championship game, to mourn the loss of the beloved broadcaster. Kim Chiodo, Don’s wife of 29 years, said he was not a romantic man, but showed his love by performing acts of service – although she would cringe anytime he held a power tool. What meant most to her was to go out of the way to help others. “To know him is to love him,” Kim said. “I can’t think of a better thing to say about him. If you came into contact with him, you were instantaneously his friend. He had a way of touching everyone he met.” Before the Chippewas’ 84-75 win over Tennessee-Martin, the team had “DON” printed on their warmup shirts and continue to have it as the season has progressed. “It’s important for the self-healing of everyone to have a way of paying tribute to Don,” said men’s basketball coach Keno Davis. “He’s going to continue to be a part of our season.”

SGA BEGINS CENTENNIAL YEAR, FINAL SEMESTER FOR HENDRICKS, ROSE

New representatives were shown the basics of serving on the Student Government Association at its Jan. 13 meeting, the first of the spring semester. Along with explaining how SGA works, the members previewed the semester ahead. Vice President Lyndi Rose said SGA is making significant progress toward the implementation of a fall break. Rose collected survey responses on when students want the break to occur and presented the results Tuesday morning to a fall break committee appointed by President Robert Davies. SGA President Jake Hendricks and Rose, there won’t be another first meeting of the semester. After two years of occupying the highest seats in the largest student government in Michigan, both will graduate in May. “It’s just surreal that this is my last semester at CMU and my last semester in SGA,” Rose said. “My main goal is to finish strong.” Their final year as SGA leaders comes

coincides with the group’s 100-year anniversary, which takes place in December. Hendricks and Rose are also planning a “State of the Student Body” event, tentatively scheduled for Feb. 26. They will review the changes they’ve enacted on campus during their time in student government. SGA isn’t meeting next Monday, Jan. 20, because it’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day, but they will elect new senators at the following week’s meeting Monday, Jan. 27. Senators represent academic colleges and helm SGA’s six committees for student affairs. Any CMU student is eligible to run for senate and vote for candidates. Candidates for the senate are required to deliver a short speech introducing themselves and, since only nine of the 24 seats are occupied, will only need one vote to be elected if 15 or fewer people run. -Justin Cooper, Staff Reporter

Kelly emerges as top player as MAC play begins By Austin Chastain Sports Editor sports@cm-life.com

Micaela Kelly was selected to the preseason All-West Division team in the Mid-American Conference. Kelly, a junior guard from Detroit, has won the Player of the Week award four times this season -- dating back to Dec. 17. Averaging 24.4 points per game, Kelly leads Central Michigan and is second in the country behind Rider’s Stella Johnson, who averages 27.8 points per game. Kelly has scored in double digits in each game this season for the Chippewas, including a career-high 38-point performance at South Dakota State on Dec. 14. In 14 games this season, Kelly has scored 30 or more points three times, 20 points or more 11 times. From the field, Kelly is shooting 48 percent while shooting 42 percent from 3-point range and she is an 81 percent free throw shooter. Another aspect where Kelly has improved is rebounding. She is grabbing 4.5 rebounds per game. Her season-high is eight on Dec. 28 against Bethune-Cookman. “It does have a lot to do with my confidence and me saying, ‘This person can’t guard me,’” Kelly said. “I do have to be cocky at times. I have to respect my own game in order for me to trust

in my own game. It’s a blessing. Without God and teammates, it wouldn’t happen. Thankful for the confidence that they’ve given me.” Kelly, along with several other Chippewas, has led the team to 10 wins in its last 11 games — the only loss in the stretch coming at Central Florida on Dec. 30. In the middle of the stretch, the Chippewas had played six straight games on the road from Dec. 14 to Jan. 8. First-year coach Heather Oesterle said in the preseason she liked where her team was and it has continued to improve under her tutelage. After losing three straight games to open the season, the Chippewas are 10-4 overall and 3-0 in MAC play. “We’ve gotten out to a great start,” Oesterle said. “The goal is to get better every day and I think we are doing that right now.” Freshman guard Molly Davis is Kelly’s counterpart in the backcourt. Davis, a Midland native, has been learning from Kelly both in terms of the game itself and leadership. “Twin is definitely someone I look up to,” Davis said. “Just the way she plays the game on both ends of the floor. The biggest thing about her is she’s a great leader, always making sure we’re in the right spots and always picking us up when we need it.”

GYMNASTICS PICKED TO WIN MID-AMERICAN CONFERENCE Central Michigan’s gymnastics team was selected to win both the regular season and Mid-American Conference Championships in a poll of conference coaches. In 2019, the Chippewas were picked to finish third in the MAC and won the regular season title before finishing second to Northern Illinois in the MAC Championships. Senior Denelle Pedrick is one of the top returners as she was MAC Gymnast of the Year last season. She was the all-around and vault champion at last year’s MAC Championship. Another strong returner is sophomore Morgan Tong, last year’s MAC Freshman of the Year. Since 1990, the Chippewas have been a perennial force in the conference. Winning a combined 25 titles between regular season and conference championships.

Christine MacDonald, who is taking over the program after serving as an assistant for 25 years, said she is focused on the team and its goals for the 2020 season. “We appreciate the respect of our peers in the conference, as well as the recognition,” MacDonald said. “We have a very competitive CHRISTINE conference and there MACDONALD are multiple teams that challenge and compete for the title every season.” The Chippewas open the campaign Saturday with a dual-meet at Michigan State and begins MAC competition with dual at Eastern Michigan on Jan. 19.

DORMADY ACCEPTS INVITATION TO PLAY IN HULA BOWL Quinten Dormady has earned another opportunity to show his skills in front of professional scouts. Central Michigan’s senior quarterback has accepted an invitation to play in the All-Star Hula Bowl Classic, an all-star game that showcases athletes leading up to the 2020 NFL Draft. The Hula Bowl is set for 10:30 p.m. ET on Jan. 26 at Aloah Stadium in Honolulu, Hawaii. Dormady transferred to Central Michigan from Houston in the spring of 2019 and secured the starting quarterback position from coach Jim McElwain through his experience and leadership. The Texas native started his college career at Tennessee from 2015-17 before transferring to Houston. An injury gave Dormady the chance to take a medical redshirt and transfer again. Dormady started 10 games in 2019. He

threw for 2,312 yards, 14 touchdowns and nine interceptions with Central Michigan. He was 6-4 as a starter and played a pivotal role in the Mid-American Conference West Division championship. However, the Chippewas suffered losses in both the MAC championship game, 26-21, to Miami (Ohio) QUINTEN and the New Mexico DORMADY Bowl, 48-11, to San Diego State. Set accomplishable goals and take a leap of faith in 2020 Screw the New Year’s resolutions. Those can be daunting. Instead, I think it’s better to focus on manageable goals for 2020 and setting an action plan in place for achieving those marks. My goals for the New Year include not cutting my new hairstyle, saving extra cash by learning to cook (finally) rather than always going out to eat, reading at least five books, working out three times per week and graduating before 2021 begins. Those objectives are accomplishable because they are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time-based – more helpful than a New Year’s resolution that so often feels like a shot in the dark when you’re trying to all of a sudden change an undesired trait. I’ve also decided to step outside my comfort zone in the Central Michigan Life office. When I came to Central Michigan as a freshman in 2017, I was an ambitious high school broadcaster that wanted a chance to

Honoring freedom of the press and the fourth estate With any significant moment in time, people tend to reflect on the past, to recall how the moment came to be. While 2019 marked the 100th year since the founding of CM Life, it is important to also look forward. For hundreds of years, journalism has been a tool to keep society in check. The industry is known as the “fourth estate” because although there are three branches of government to keep balance, journalism informs citizens in order to keep governmental entities in check. Freedom of the press was written into the bill of rights so that there may always be a way for the people to remind the government it’s there to serve the people. From Woodward and Bernstein to Murrow or Lippmann, journalists have been there to ensure our democracy because democracy requires informed citizens. As student journalists we learn that we have the ability to create change. Especially during such a controversial time within our government during which the media is constantly being questioned and criticized and yet, these outlets continue to report the truth. That is what journalism is all about. Telling the truth to the public no matter what, so our country’s citizens can make

become a reporter at the collegiate level. I made that happen, starting as a staff reporter covering the soccer team just two weeks into the semester. I covered football for the second half of the 2017 season and the entirety of that dreadful 2018 campaign. By the second semester of my sophomore year, I was the assistant sports editor. As a junior, I was the sports editor. And now, entering my senior year with only two semesters remaining, I’ve taken a

leap of faith, gravitating away from sports to grow my newsroom skills. The time for change is now, and I’ve been promoted to the managing editor position of Central Michigan Life. Remember, sports have been my main focus for as long as I can remember. From playing sports to watching to broadcasting to reporting, I’ve never wavered. Taking over as the managing editor is a new experience for me, and I’m going to struggle, but I’ll also learn new skills that will be of value to me for the rest of my life. You’ll still find me writing some sports features and staying involved when needed. My primary focus is as the managing editor, working hand-in-hand with Dylan Goetz, our enthusiastic editor-in-chief. Despite a bit of nervousness, I’m thrilled for what 2020 holds. I’ve set attainable goals and taken a leap of faith. To me, that feels a lot better than a resolution. Maybe a different mentality on the New Year will also help you.
