Barnes demolished; signage installed all over campus Join our exclusive
By Austin Chastain Assistant Sports Editor news@cm-life.com
Trees, grass and a memorial will take the place of Barnes Hall, which was decommissioned and demolished in June. Before the razing, Barnes was the oldest residence hall on campus, dating back to 1939, per the Central Michigan University website. Jonathan Webb, the associate vice president of Facilities Management, said the materials, specifically concrete, brick and mortar, were crushed up and mixed into new concrete that was spread throughout campus. “It’s really neat because we have a lot of students who are interested in sustainability and protecting the environment,” Webb said. “It’s great to know that we have great contract partners and there was a big commitment to get that material where it needed to go.” 170 tons of recycled metal
from the buidling were recycled, too. Much of the rebar and other framework from the building was separated from the demolition site and taken care of properly. Webb said the project will reach its completion in September. The Barnes project was one of many construction efforts on campus over the summer.
WARRINER HALL One of the other large projects that CMU is working on is repairing the masonry at Warriner Hall. The 91-year old building lost some bricks as a result of the heavy rains and flooding in 2017. Whenever bricks come up missing, Webb said that there is generally an issue of how the brick was adhered to the building. The builders put mortar in between the bricks, a method known as tuck-pointing. The method generally causes bricks to fall out, but
can be easily repaired. Webb brought in masons from Clark Construction Company to examine the building and see what the issues were. “We knew that there was something more behind the brick,” Webb said. “When you pulled the brick off, you could see there are problems with the steel, water got in over time and some rusting occurred.” Webb added that if rust is found, the masons will grind the rust away and seal the steel with a coating before replacing the bricks. Since Warriner is one of the more historic buildings on campus, one of the challenges that the masons face is replacing those bricks exactly the way they were before. That is to preserve a “timeless” effect on the building. “It’s the building here at Central,” Webb said. “It’s Warriner Hall.” The project is in the second of a
three-year window and is anticipated to be completed next summer. CHIPPEWA CHAMPIONS CENTER With the 3200 squarefoot scoreboard up and running in the south end of Kelly/Shorts Stadium,

the other project in the stadium is the Chippewa Champions Center. As the site prepares for construction, CMU is using a method known as “design assist,” which allows the construction team to work with sub-contractors (or architects and engineers) during the design phase. The practice should provide an expedited pace to completion of the project. “It’s all about partnerships like anything in life,” Webb said. “In building those partnerships we’re moving quickly with the goal of having this project at least somewhat operational by next August.” CENTER FOR INTEGRATED HEALTH STUDIES As an expansion of the Health Professions Building, the Center for Integrated Health Studies will house different labs, giving students the opportunity to practice in highdemand fields. The center will also include a two-room simulation suite with high-tech mannequins for surgery practice and eight patient rooms for role-playing medical scenarios, per the CMU website. Webb said that the building is on track to be substantially complete on Sept. 18, meaning that it will be ready to use and equipment and furniture can begin to be moved into the building.
OTHER PROJECTS Students will notice there is significantly more wayfinding signage to point them in the right direction to where they need to go. North quad has new painting and carpeting and has a lot of new electrical aspects (lighting and fire alarms for safety) as well. Sidewalks have been recemented with added accessibility to ensure everyone can get around campus the best way possible. The project also filled holes and cracks in the sidewalks that could pose danger. Exterior lighting has been improved throughout campus. Interior access has been expanded in the residence halls, meaning that the staff has more control on both the exterior and interior of residence halls. Classrooms in Moore Hall, Grawn Hall and Health Professions have been renovated. Woldt, Emmons and Kessler Halls were repainted and touched up. Laboratories have been improved to help researchers with their work. Roofing was improved on various buildings throughout campus. Webb gave credit to his team of skilled trade workers for a job well done over the summer. “They work so hard,” Webb said. “They had some very long days and it’s just that dedication they have, what a great team here.”

oodrow Wilson was serving as the 28th President of the United States. Prohibition of alcohol was approved by lawmakers in Washington D.C. Babe Ruth left the Boston Red Sox to join the New York Yankees. Those were some of the major news stories of 1919. The first edition of Central Michigan Life was also published that year. Now, almost 100 years later, there have been 17 presidents, the people of Michigan ended the prohibition of alcohol and marijuana, the Yankees are still playoff bound and CM Life is starting a new school year in Mount Pleasant.
Help us with our mission of making CMU a better place.
Journalism is sometimes called the “first rough draft of history.” You are reading the first print edition of CMU’s nationally-recognized, award-winning, studentrun media company. Thank you for reading our work and being a part of our history. What is Student Media? First off, we are here to help you tell your story. Whether you are returning from the best internship of your life or returning to campus after working your butt off at your parent’s house, we want to hear about your experiences, your lives. Over the past two weeks, we have transformed our editorial staff to adapt to the advantages of being a digital news organization. This way we can interact with our readers using the platform our readers want to interact with us: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and yes, even TikTok. We publish new stories daily at cm-life. com, Central Michigan Life on Facebook, @CMLIFE on Twitter, centralmichiganlife on Instagram, cmlife on Snapchat and centralmichiganlife on TikTok. You can email us at news@cm-life.com. As we place a greater focus on digital journalism, we are also reducing our print publication schedule. We will be publishing one print edition per week each Thursday. We will be using that opportunity to create a special reader experience focused on unique content, with an emphasis on photography and design. As the voice of our student body, Central Michigan Life also wants to strengthen our campus partnerships with groups like Student Government Association and

My first three years have flown by, and senior year has arrived Everyone always tells you when you start college that it will fly by. I’m sure the each of the freshman class at Leadership Safari has heard that statement 10 times this week. The thing is though, you never really realize how fast college is flying by until you’re almost done. You don’t realize how quickly college is going by when you are on your fourth hour in the library on a Wednesday night in November and you are planning for how to get back to your dorm without freezing to death. First-year students reading this may never think they will be in that situation. I said the same thing. Yet here I am, just a few months away from graduation. All I have to say is: Wow, that was quick. I am entering my fourth year as a student in the Journalism Department in the College of Arts and Media. I’ve made the Dean’s List just about every semester I have been at CMU. I got my start at Central Michigan Life because I wanted to be described as the high school athlete who thought he still had it. I wanted to be a sports reporter and cover the athletics programs at CMU. Soon after I started, I saw the opportunity that Central Michigan Life gave to eager students who wanted to dedicate their time and commit-

ment to be a part of something great. I considered the idea of once leading the newsroom, but never expected things to play out how they did. I couldn’t be more thankful for everyone who has helped me advance my collegiate career in journalism. I moved up the ranks over the years and finally interviewed to be editor-in-chief last spring. The interview process was definitely the most nervous I have been since the first-ever day on the job at Mr. Quick, a local fast food joint in my hometown. Just weeks ago, I finished my second journalism internship in enemy territory at the Kalamazoo Gazette. Despite all of the Western Michigan University paraphernalia, I loved my time in the Zoo. I met lots of great coworkers and was able to broaden my comfort zone by reporting on breaking news. Shout out to the Joel Bissell kickball team, too. Let’s go get that Kalamazoo Sport and Social Club Championship.
I am confident in my abilities and ready to lead a team of editors and reporters to tell the stories that CMU has to offer to the best of our ability. My time has come. Senior year. It’s the one time in my life where there is probably more uncertainty about where I will live and work in 10 months than what I will have for dinner tomorrow night. This could be our newspaper’s biggest year. Central Michigan Life is entering its 100th anniversary, and I’m the one to lead our team into the next 100 years of impactful journalism, incredible photography and innovative online engagement. That’s pretty cool. It’s also important. This year will represent all the years, editors and reporters that have come before me, and all of those to come. So as I wrap up my career at CM Life, I am asking for your help. Help me tell your stories. Email me at editor@cm-life.com and share your story ideas, submit a guest column or letter to the editor, give me feedback to share with the staff, or jokes about how bad the Detroit Lions are. I’ll try to respond to your comments. We are the voice of students at this university and will continue to be for another 100 years.

Leadership Safari Guides welcome the next generation of Chippewas Hunter McLaren |Photographer
By Hunter McLaren Associate Editor For Leadership Safari guides, the program can be a lot of work, but the reward of introducing students to their new lives at Central Michigan University is worth it. “I just wanted (the participants and guides) to experience the magic that Leadership Safari is, build their skills and just get emotionally touched like I did through Safari,” St. Clair Shores senior Hayley Marlow said. “It really did change my life.” There are two types of guides to help manage the event and the more than 1,500 participants. About 300 students are group guides, with each guide managing about eight students and taking them through various team-building and icebreaking activities.
Incoming freshman participate in Central Michigan University’s Leadership Safari Aug. 17-21 in various locations on campus.
Another 20 students are known as “core guides.” Core guides help manage the 300 group guides and help solve any problems that groups may be having. The only way to be a core guide is to be on staff for three years. Being a core guide and helping so many people can be difficult, but it’s worth it, Marlow said. Safari isn’t just about getting to know the campus, but also the people on campus. Those who participate in Leadership Safari gain a lot of connections with other freshman, upperclassmen and faculty members. “It’s fantastic that we are trained to connect w SAFARI | 10

people with the resources they need and I love being that person,” Marlow said. “I truly feel like I’m making a difference in this position.” Participating freshmen moved in to their dorms one week early, but they didn’t stay put for long. Older CMU students acted as guides for the event and helped lead incoming students through five activity-packed days while wearing colorful safari vests and hats. Leadership Safari kicked off with students running through a tunnel of cheering guides into the Indoor Athletic Complex, where the incoming students were welcomed to the conference. Over the next few days, students heard words of encouragement from poets and university leaders, faced an obstacle course and put faith in their teammates for trust falls. Guides and participating students often started their days as early as 9:30 a.m. and ended them at 11 p.m., with few breaks in between. This year marks Assistant Director of Leadership Institute Jonathan Glenn’s first time in charge of Leadership Safari. “I’m very excited to be in this position,” he w SAFARI | 12

said. “I look forward to the growth of all my students and for me too.” His first year of leading the program had a big learning curve, but Glenn said the student staff has played a huge role in running the event, Glenn said. “We have an amazing staff,” he said. “The last couple days have been a little stressful, but without the staff we had it would have been a lot more stressful.” One of the most exciting things about Leadership Safari is being around students who want to get involved on campus and make a difference, Glenn said. “It’s really important for CMU faculty and staff to understand the power of student leadership,” he said. “Their ability to communicate, their ability to step up and to help their fellow classmates – I’m in awe by it.”
One of the goals going forward is to make the program more sustainable, he said. Participants this year were given refillable plastic bottles to cut down on plastic waste. In addition to collecting pizza boxes to be composted, compostable silverware, plates and napkins were used. “I hope we leave CMU with the thought process of how we are saving our planet and making things better,” he said. “We still have room to grow, and my students are helping me out with that. When Plainwell freshman Haleigh Hayford came to visit CMU, she heard from faculty members that she should sign up for Leadership Safari. She did as soon as she could. “I definitely think it got me out of my comfort w SAFARI | 14

zone, which is really good,” Hayford said. “It basically forced me to make new friends and meet people that I didn’t think I would ever speak to if I wasn’t here.” Macomb freshman Maggie Valley and Detroit freshman Sojourner Posch both met through the program and became friends. They both said that their guides have made them comfortable and allowed them to meet new people in a safe environment. “One night we talked about loving yourself,” Valley said. “We met with our small groups to have a conversation and I felt really comfortable talking about it.” The guides made themselves available and open to questions and made sure their Safari members knew they could contact them with any questions, they said. “They’re really active and good about talking about team building,” Posch said. “They’ve taught us how to transition into being freshmen.” Valley and Posch both said that their guides helped shape their Leadership Safari experience and welcomed them to their new life as a Chippewa. They both said they might be interested in being guides next year. “They have to do a lot,” Valley said. “They come here a week before (Leadership Safari) for training. I don’t know if I could do it, it’s a lot of work.”

Having problems on campus? Here’s where to ask for help. By Hunter McLaren Associate Editor news@cm-life.com
There’s certain things that can’t be avoided as a student on campus: You will come down with the flu during finals week, your FASFA application will get held up for some reason you can’t figure out and, of course, you’ll never find a good place to park. If you’re having a problem, there is an office here equipped and ready to help you. Here are some of the places you can go for help: • Campus I.D. Office (989) 774-3484 When you lose your campus I.D., you can get a new one here. • Academic Advising (989) 774-7506 If you’d like to change your major or have questions about course requirements, the Academic Advising office is a good place to start. • Student Activity Center (989) 774-3686 For working out, taking a swim, playing basketball or just having fun. There is even a bowling alley, for all of those awkward first dates. • Office of Student Activities and Involvement (989) 774-3017 With 400 student organizations on campus, there’s one that’s right for you. Joining a
FRESHMEN
ORIENTATION New students have questions, Central Michigan Life has answers
student group is a great way to get involved and meet other students. • IT Help Desk (989) 774-3662 Computer troubles when a big project is due? Give them a call. • Scholarships and Financial Aid (989) 774-3674 They can help you work out your FASFA troubles, and trust me, you will have FASFA troubles. • Student Health Services (989) 774-6599 If you’re sick, they can help you get better. They also provide immunizations and free monthly STI testing. If you can’t make an appointment at the clinic in Foust Hall, the Troutman Hall clinic accepts walk-in patients.
Isaac Ritchey | Senior Reporter Senior office specialist Angela Massaway, left, helps Evart junior Courtney Sheldon Aug. 15 in the Student Services Court at the University Center.
• Counseling Center (989) 774-3381 One-on-one counseling, workshops and support groups are all available. Students can walk in without an appointment from 1-4 p.m. every Wednesday. Of course, some students will face more serious problems. All new students participate in an orientation session with the Central Michigan University Police Department. It’s important to feel safe on campus, and students should reach out to the CMUPD if they don’t. • Campus Police (989) 774-3081 Lt. Cameron Wassman said the department usually sees an uptick in crime the first few weeks of fall semester and the last few weeks of spring semester. “It is important for people to know where valuables are and to keep them locked up and
protected, so they don’t run the risk of people taking them,” Wassman said. A good way to stay safe during the school year, Wassman said, is to remember three things: be responsible, obey the law and help those who need help. Other important resources include: • Safe Rides (989) 774-4357 Free busses pick up and drop off students any day class is in session from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. • Title IX Coordinator (989) 774-3253 Sexual assault is a serious issue. They’re trained to listen and help. • Sexual Assault Peer Advocates (989) 774-2255 These student volunteers are trained to listen and available 24/7. All conversations with SAPA are completely confidential.

Flint alumnus Stephan JoQuan Wilson knew his May 4 commencement ceremony would be special. He was invited to perform at the ceremony where he would receive his bachelor of fine arts degree in musical theater. Little did he know, hours later video of Wilson and his mother, Sharonda, would bring national attention to their family and Central Michigan University. Wilson was invited many times to sing at university events. He sang at commencement ceremonies, School of Music events and even at President Bob Davies’ investiture. Because he was singing the national anthem and the alma mater, he was excited to learn that his family was invited to sit in the President’s box. That wasn’t the biggest surprise the university had planned for the Wilson family. A staff member approached Sharonda and asked if she would stand by her son during his performance. Then, another staff member asked her to come down to the floor with the other graduates and walk with Stephan when he received his diploma. Commencement coordinator, Kyle PybusJerome, handed Sharonda a graduation cap that was hidden behind a binder she was holding to her chest. Wilson was asked to stand by her son. To the family’s surprise, Davies introduced Sharonda during his remarks. He explained that she was missing her Ferris State University commencement ceremony to be at CMU with

Wilsons ‘overwhelmed’ after video goes viral By Sara Kellner Associate Editor

Stephan. Then he conferred her degree and told her to move the tassel on the graduation cap she was wearing. The stunned McGuirk Arena audience erupted in mix of applause, cheering and tears. University Communications captured the moment on video and posted it on social media later that day. The video spread quickly and was shared by national news outlets like CNN and BuzzFeed News. Wilson insists that neither he nor his mother had any idea about what CMU had planned for them that afternoon. Their reaction, as it appears in the now famous video, is completely authentic. Two weeks after the video went viral, Stephan said he was humbled by the amount of people who watched it and how they reacted to it. “I’m glad I went viral for a moment that was so special and beautiful,” Stephan said. “Not everybody goes viral for those things.” The week after the video was first posted was a whirlwind, he said. Wilson left immediately after his commencement ceremony to go on a tour with the Central Michigan Chamber Singers, an audition-based student choral group. The group toured through Alabama and Florida, performing at churches and high schools, visiting historical landmarks and completing two community service projects. Although he received dozens of phone calls and Facebook messages, he felt being on the bus with friends, and out of state, was a comfortable place to be during the media frenzy. “The people who knew me in that area were confined to that bus,” he said. “My mom had people coming to her office.” COMMENCEMENT | 20

Sharonda said the attention was overwhelming. “I’m a very behind-the-scenes person,” said Sharonda, who received phone calls and emails from national media outlets requesting interviews. She said CMU’s communication team was a big help with fielding calls from media and relaying information to her and Stephan. Stephan said he and his mom worked very hard to continue to be themselves amidst all the attention. In the weeks following the video going viral, Stephan said he was ready for life to get back to normal. In June, Stephan moved to Charleston to work with the resident acting company at the Charleston Stage theater. He applied for the position in February and accepted it in March. As part of the company, he is provided free housing and teaches theater classes to K-12 students. He had his first opportunity to direct a summer theater camp in July, and he and the

seven other actors in the company are working on a main stage production of “Footloose,” which is set to open Aug. 28. Wilson said he has 11 family members flying down for opening night. His contract with the company ends in April 2020, so Stephan is preparing for auditions, and is excited to see where he will end up. “I feel like I’m still allowed to climb that ladder and do what I graduated to do,” he said. Sharonda said her bachelor’s degree has allowed her to apply for jobs she wanted, but wasn’t qualified for yet. Over the summer, she was hired to work full-time in the admissions office at Mott Community College. Stephan said she has been giving tours and assisting students who are interested in going to a community college to transfer to a university later. Sharonda said she is excited for Stephan to begin his career in Charleston and looks forward to visiting him. She said the rule for all of her children is to talk on the phone at least three days per week, which she will enforce while he is in South Carolina. “When I can hear them speak, I can tell if something’s not right,” she said. Stephan said his mom’s

he did his homework, and she continued to check in with him about homework at least once each week in college. She has always been there for Stephan and his three siblings. He said she would leave work early to go to recitals and she always drove her kids to school and extracurricular activities. When Sharonda found out her commencement ceremony was the same day as Stephan’s, she never considered missing his ceremony to go to her own. She was perfectly fine with receiving her degree in the mail this summer, knowing she earned it. Because Stephan struggled in school, she felt his graduation day was extra special. She wanted to support her son at graduation just like she had supported him through high school and college. “My mom has been recognized for this one sacrifice, but she’s made so many more sacrifices,” Stephan said.

Academic adviser vs. success coach: What’s the difference? Office of Student Success Associate Director explains
FRESHMEN
ORIENTATION
By Sara Kellner Associate Editor
New students have questions, Central Michigan Life has answers
news@cm-life.com
What is the difference between an academic adviser and a success coach? Which one you visit depends on what you need help with. There are many people at CMU dedicated to helping you make your college experience easier. But sometimes it gets confusing trying to figure out where to go for help. Office of Student Success Associate Director Erin Smith-Gaken is one of those people who wants to help you out. She explained the difference between the two positions and offered advice on when you should visit them. CM Life: What does an academic adviser do? Smith-Gaken: Think of the academic adviser as the person who helps you develop your academic plan: course selection, your major or any other requirements that may exist. They may help with some major exploration, but then we would utilize the Career Development Center – there’s a lot of partnering with that. There are different types of advisers: we have pre-major advisers that are housed in the residence halls, who mainly work with first-year students, then segueing into the collegespecific advisers, who are just as trained in general education requirements, but also a lot more familiar with majors and major requirements.
Erin Smith-Gaken
What does a success coach do? A success coach helps to navigate that academic plan. If you were to come in and say, “I’m struggling in these classes,” or “I have this really heavy course load this semester and I work 20 hours a week, and by the way, I’m the president of my RSO,” that coach could help you address your time management and prioritization and help you think of new ways to study or learn or strategize for those classes that may pose more of a challenge than others. They are really there to help you navigate college. Do most of the success coaches know some advising stuff? Yes, but I don’t ever claim to be as trained in that as our academic advising friends who do that day in and day out. The coaches are there more to provide support and guidance, whether that is time management, study skills, learning styles, self-efficacy and building confidence. We work a lot with first-year students to help with that transition and
adjustment to college, which is super important. Helping them get engaged is another piece of it. We know because of research that students who are engaged on campus are more likely to do better and stay. How often do students see a success coach? Success coaching is unique to every student. It’s meant to be more long-term as well. A success coach would anticipate meeting with you multiple times a semester, if that’s something you would want, where, more than likely, you would see an adviser once a semester with the current
model that we have. Generally, success coaching is a little bit more long-term relationship building than advising could be, not to say that advisers don’t build really close relationships with their advisees too. What is the most important thing students should know about success coaching? Your success is your own. How you view success is different than how I would view success. When you come in to meet with a coach, it’s a judgment-free zone. We’re just here to support you. We want to be your person, however that works for you, whatever you want that to be for you as a student, we want to give you the support that you need. We’re just here to help you navigate college and be successful however you define success for yourself.

New students on campus must open doors in order to find their place Some people get to college and think they need to know exactly what they’re going to major in. At least that’s what I thought when I got to Central Michigan University – but that’s not true. A university is the place you go to help you figure it all out. In high school, you’re on a four-year path that is already planned out for you. The teachers tell you exactly which six classes to take every year. If you follow their plan, you walk out with a diploma, the quadratic equation and you are supposedly ready to take on the world. In college, everything changes. You choose everything. You choose your classes, dorms, schedule, meal plan... When you’re an undecided freshman, those decisions can be overwhelming. You’re almost hoping for someone to come along and tell you what to do. During my orientation, we were divided into groups based on our planned major. The only problem was, I had no clue what I wanted to major in. I decided to go with the “undecided” group. The speaker for this group was an academic adviser who

I initially wanted to tour CMU because I had come here every summer for high school band camp and I liked the atmosphere of the campus. I imagined myself hammocking from all those trees and skateboarding on all the wide sidewalks. It just seemed like a place where I could be happy. What made me commit to Central was my campus tour. When we were walking through the dorms, I noticed every door was propped open by a painted rock or brick. The tour guide told me students leave their doors open so they can make new friends. They paint the rocks at a rock painting party the first week of classes, and they use their pieces of art to prop open their doors the rest of the year. My freshman year, I made friends that I will have for the rest of my life. I met people in my classes, in my halls, from clubs and student organizations. If you open your door at CMU, you’ll fit right in. Kaitlyn Hixson is from Grandville, Michigan. She is double majoring in Applied Mathematics and Journalism with a minor in American Sign Language.

told us that we were the honest group, and that everyone else who knew their major was kidding themselves. Finally, I started to feel my shoulders get lighter the more he talked. When it was time to schedule my first semester of classes, I was overwhelmed with all the choices. But I asked for help from a wiser, older student who knew which professors to steer away from and which buildings I could sprint to in under 15 minutes. With his advice, I started to feel better about being undecided. I took the advice of literally every tour leader from my orientation and I got involved. I joined the Chippewa Marching Band as a piccolo where I met some of
the best people I have ever known. I got involved in the deaf culture events around campus and I met new people also thinking about an American Sign Language minor. I entered math competitions and hung out with friends from my calculus class. I went to basketball games with my roommates and cheered on our team until our voices were gone. Then I found myself starting to feel like I belonged here at Central. Everything started fitting into place. I have now decided on a double major in applied mathematics and journalism, and a minor in American Sign Language. I found my passions through trying new things, exploring my interests, stepping out of my comfort zone and getting involved!

RECREATIONAL MARIJUANA BALLOT PROPOSAL ACCEPTED BY CITY COMMISSION
Recreational marijuana retailers could soon set up shop in Mount Pleasant. Mount Pleasant city commissioners accepted a ballot initiative regarding adult-use marijuana establishments to get the topic on the Nov. 6, 2019 ballot at its meeting Aug. 12. If passed, the proposal would allow up to five marijuana retailers and an unlimited number of growers, processers, transporters, microbusinesses and consumption establishments in the county, according to city documents. It will also require the city to issue a medical marijuana license to the same establishment, according to the city documents. TThe motion passed with a 7-0 vote. The initiative petition earned 324 signatures from valid city residents, which represented 5.1 percent of the votes cast for governor in the last election, according to city documents. Local business owner and marijuana advocate Brandon McQueen filed the petition for initiation of a municipal ordinance in July. He only needed to request signatures on the west side of town, he said.
Chief Larry Klaus of the Central Michigan University Police Department asked for tweaks to the petition initiative when asked for comment by the city. Klaus requested a limit to the number of dispensaries during the first years in practice to evaluate the affects on the community, according to a letter to the city. Marijuana use is not permitted on Central Michigan University’s campus. McQueen said many local police departments around the state are also requesting similar limitations. After the meeting, commissioners discussed details of a city regulatory ordinance that would govern local recreational marijuana rules and regulations in case the ballot initiative doesn’t pass. As of now, the city wants to allow three retailers, City Manager Nancy Ridley said. -Dylan Goetz, Editor-in-Chief

RETURNING HOME TO MICHIGAN Mary Schutten has years of experience in leadership at Michigan universities By Sara Kellner Associate Editor news@cm-life.com
After more than 30 years of working in higher education, with 11 years as a dean or associate dean, Mary Schutten decided she wanted to lead a university as a provost. The dean of the College of Health and Human Services at San Jose State University applied to a variety of universities that were hiring provosts, one of them happened to be Central Michigan University. She was familiar with CMU. Having grown up in Michigan, she knew friends and family who had attended and she knew it was a reputable institution. Schutten began researching the universities she applied to and the more she learned about CMU, the more she liked it. “The more I looked into it and the more I connected, the more it seemed like a good fit,” she said. Her career in education began 40 years ago when Schutten received her teaching degree from Calvin College and moved to Bellflower, California to teach at a high school. At first, Schutten was hesitant about moving to California, but her dad encouraged her to. “He said, ‘You’ll always wish you did it. If you don’t do it now, life will unfold and

you may not get that experience,’” she said. She taught math and physical education,

and she also coached women’s sports. Schutten began working at a liberal arts college in Iowa after receiving her master’s degree. “There was supposedly a glut of teachers at that time, but I was very appealing because of my degrees in math and physical education,” she said. “PE appealed to people who wanted to fill coaching spots.” Eventually, she moved back to Michigan. She taught at Calvin College, Western Michigan University and Grand Valley State University. Schutten’s first administrative position was at GVSU when she was promoted to associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. She served as an associate dean at GVSU for six years before heading back to California to serve as dean of the College of Health and Human Services at San Jose State University.
In December 2018, former Provost Michael Gealt announced his plan to step down from his position. A month later, President Bob Davies appointed a search committee to find CMU’s next provost. Schutten was invited to speak at a candidate forum April 26, where she discussed interdisciplinary programs and involving departments in budget conversations. The university announced her hiring as CMU’s next provost on May 2, 2019. Although she had to say goodbye to the California beaches, Schutten is excited to be back in Michigan. “It’s more about the work and how it will fulfill me, not necessarily about the geography,” she said. She is excited to live closer to family now. Schutten said she began seriously considering CMU as an opportunity just a few weeks after the job position was posted. “It seemed like an exciting place to be,” she said. “I began looking at it more thoroughly, and the three imperatives of student success, scholarly work and community engagement are really important to the work I have done.” Since she took over as Executive Vice President and Provost on July 1, Schutten has been soaking in as much information as she can about the university. On what she calls her “looking and listening tour,” Schutten hopes to visit every single department at the university. On her tour so far, Schutten has identified a few areas where CMU excels, and others that could use improvement. She said she is impressed by the amount of nationallyranked programs and the scholarly research happening on campus. “There are so many exciting things going on here,” she said. “We should try to scale that up a little bit and show the world what we’re doing.” As for challenges, Schutten acknowledged the issue of recruitment. CMU, like other universities in Michigan, has had a decline in enrollment for nearly a decade. Schutten said it is important to be creative in dealing with issues like recruitment and retention. “Most people think that when we say, ‘do more,’ that they have to work overtime or do lots of things, but that’s not necessarily true,” she said. “We just have to work better and look at ways we can use and share resources.”

MAINSTAGE CONNECTS INCOMING STUDENTS WITH ORGANIZATIONS
NEWS AND NOTES FROM AROUND CAMPUS
CONVOCATION CEREMONY TO WELCOME NEW STUDENTS AUG. 23 Incoming freshmen and transfer students will receive words of encouragement from Central Michigan University leaders at the New Student Convocation Ceremony at 10 a.m. Aug. 23 in McGuirk Arena. Those in the audience will hear from university leadership, a faculty member and a recent graduate during the program. Convocation is the official welcome to a Chippewa’s academic career and is a celebration of the beginning of their higher education journey. Many universities host an opening convocation at the beginning of the academic school year as a ceremony to welcome new students. CMU Presdient Robert Davies, College of Business Administration faculty member Amy McGinnis and former Student Government Association President Anna
Owens will all speak at the ceremony. The ceremony creates a sense of community and acts as a bookend to commencement ceremony, Ceremonies and Events Coordinator Kyle Pybus-Jerome said. Students who live on campus will meet with their resident assistants and travel to McGuirk Arena as a group. Those who live off campus should arrive by 9:45 a.m. and parking is available in lot 62. Incoming freshmen and transfer students are required to attend convocation. Parents, family and friends of students can watch the ceremony using a livestream link on the university’s website. -Hunter McLaren, Associate Editor
With students returning to campus for fall semester, it’s time for them to try and scrounge up as much free stuff at MainStage as they can. Free pizza, pancakes, shirts and a rock climbing wall have all been staples of the MainStage experience in years past. It’s doubtful that this year should be any different. The annual recruiting event takes place 6-9 p.m. on Aug. 22 at Finch Fieldhouse and allows students to find their place on campus. It acts as a way for students to learn about what other students are doing around campus and how to get involved. Students can learn how to join intramural sports teams and on-campus organizations. MainStage also provides a venue for local business to feature their goods and services, usually in the form of free food or merchandise. Those looking to go Greek can also talk to fraternities and sororities about Greek Life.
Danielle Rossman, assistant director for student organizations, said there are around 400 student organizations on campus, with 240 of them participating in MainStage. She said that the event was moved to Finch Fieldhouse from the grassy area near the Student Activity Center to better accommodate students with disabilities and mobility concerns.with their resident assistants and travel to McGuirk Arena as a group. Jim McElwain’s approach is intense, but it’ll likely pay off for Chippewas Evan Petzold Sports Editor
Jim McElwain isn’t here to dance, listen to the top Hip-Hop songs, pointlessly run all over Kelly/Shorts Stadium or stick to someone else’s pace. Migos brings new school rap to life; Eminem delivers the homegrown hustle; the lyrics of the late Nipsey Hussle display community activism. McElwain doesn’t care. His only focus is on winning football games. There’s a philosophy to doing that, and it’s been evident through watching fall camp practice in Mount Pleasant.
FIRST THINGS FIRST McElwain has made several moves since arriving on Central Michigan’s campus in early December to take over as coach after John Bonamego was fired from the position. In the latest series of those moves, McElwain has moved practice times during the season to afternoon hours, something that hasn’t been done in quite some time. He’s also decided to never hold practice at Kelly/Shorts Stadium, using the East Grass Field (for the first time in what feels like forever), Bennett Track Field and the Indoor Athletic Complex. Again, where Bonamego used Kelly/Shorts, McElwain won’t do it. He wants playing on the game field to become something special again. “It’s an honor and privilege to play on that field, so that’s why,” said senior linebacker Michael Oliver. Moving practice time to the afternoon and keeping the stadium for Saturdays were just two of the

ways McElwain has changed the system. He also opened the first five periods of certain practices for the media to attend. And, yes, that’s another bonus that hasn’t been given in over a decade. Bonamego never allowed that even though many Power Five conference schools give media some type of access to practice. McElwain wants things done his way or the highway, ensuring
structure within the program. It’s seemed to work thus far, especially during practice sessions.
LET’S TALK ABOUT PRACTICE Just one season ago, with Bonamego as coach, CMU ended most practices with an 11-on-11 drill. Music blared the latest rap tracks and players danced on the field. Even though the losses
piled up, the music and dancing remained. That doesn’t fly for McElwain. There’s no music and no dancing. Everything is run on discipline and communication. McElwain might’ve said it best during his introductory press conference eight months ago. “They needed to learn how to sit up, they needed to learn how to focus, they need to learn how
to communicate non-verbally,” McElwain said when he was announced as coach. “I think for them it was possibly a bit of an eyeopener.” Well, he couldn’t have been more correct. The Chippewas truly did need those things, and McElwain knew it just one day after accepting the gig. In 2018, CMU averaged 8.2 offensive penalties, the eight-worst mark of 129 Division I FBS teams, for 70.9 yards lost per game. The Chippewas had the third-worst passing rate (48.6%) and averaged 0.8 passing touchdowns (seventhworst) and 0.7 rushing touchdowns (fifth-worst). Bonamego’s offense also logged 2.3 turnovers per contest (fourth-worst). No college squad was more dreadful at picking up first downs. Most 1-11 teams likely aren’t as disciplined as they should be, and Bonamego knew that was the case for his team based on the remarks made in his post-game press conferences last season and two team brawls in the finale against Toledo. “There are positives. It’s hard to see them right now; you have to really look to see them and you have to want to see them, frankly,” Bonamego said following his final game as coach. “We’re 1-11. A lot of these games were very winnable; this one wasn’t. We got run out of the stadium today. But there’s three, four, five games this season that we were in and we absolutely could’ve won and should’ve won.” So, in turn, McElwain has brought an aspect of discipline to the practice field in preparation for the season. His style involves complete focus and no wasted time. During Monday’s practice, there weren’t many opportunities for players to rest. Movement on the w JUMP TO | 30

grass in pads was consistent, something much different from a season ago.

WHAT’S NEXT Speaking of that crummy offense, McElwain is doing everything he can to flip the switch. Once again, he’s seemingly taking matters into his own hands. Does he trust offensive coordinator Charlie Frye? Of course. But McElwain is an offensive guru, especially at the quarterback and receiver positions. From watching practice for 30 minutes, it’s clear he’s fully invested in airing out the ball, putting big numbers on the scoreboard and filling the stands due to an invigorating playbook. “With coach Mac and coach Frye out there, they do a nice job of getting the right guys in there and mixing up personnel so we have the right guys in there to make plays,” said sophomore slot receiver Kalil Pimpleton. McElwain’s control of the

offense was also exemplified well before fall camp, as he brought in transfers Quinten Dormady (quarterback), David Moore (quarterback), Oge Udeogu (offensive lineman) and Jake Dominguez (offensive lineman) to fill team needs. The newfound intensity, structure and discipline displayed by the Chippewas through just a
few fall practices already shows the future is bright under McElwain. “He brings a different type of energy, a different type of level of competitiveness and a different type of level of professionalism,” Oliver said. “We just have to compete at each level.” How much does this help? Immensely. Central Michigan lost close games in 2018 to Northern Illinois (by 8), Michigan State (by 11), Buffalo (by 10), Ball State (by 1), Akron (by 7), Eastern Michigan (by 10) and Bowling Green (by 11). That goes to show how close MidAmerican Conference teams are by comparison. The Chippewas could’ve just as easily picked up a handful of wins. Instead, the squad went 1-11 overall, 0-8 in the conference. With some much-needed discipline, the course of last season could’ve gone differently. McElwain is now faced with the chance to add a positive chapter CMU’s book, and, in my opinion, he’s already making progress.

Soccer to make MAC Tournament under new coach
The 2018 season left more questions than answers for the Central Michigan soccer team. After the campaign ended with a controversial loss to Eastern Michigan, a 7-12 overall record and 5-6 in the Mid-American Conference, CMU missed the MAC Tournament by one game and coach Peter McGahey was fired. One of the more prevalent questions before the Chippewas is how they will respond to last season’s heartbreak. However, the most important question will be the performance of new coach Jeremy Groves, who was an assistant coach at Kentucky last season. CMU graduated its three highest scorers last year: Lexi Pelafas, Madison Costner and Shannon
CENTRAL MICHIGAN LIFE | CM-LIFE.COM
WESTERN MICHIGAN The Chippewas and Broncos will play for the 27th time to open the CMU home MAC slate. Last season, freshman midfielder Chesney Wargo scored the winning goal in the 75th minute to secure a 3-2 victory for the Chips. WMU went 14-7 last year and lost in the second round of the MAC Tournament. After splitting their first two MAC games (Ball State loss, Miami win), the Chippewas will return to their winning ways against the Broncos. Home field will make the difference in the match as CMU gains a lead early and holds on to win. TOLEDO A home match against the Rockets, who went 8-9-2 last year, acts as
the mid-point of the MAC schedule. Toledo took the 2-0 victory at home last season over the Chippewas, and this game will prove to be another pivotal point in the season. Winning this game could give CMU confidence heading into a tough stretch to end the campaign. However, the Rockets’ ability to score could push them just ahead of the Chippewas again in 2019.
EASTERN MICHIGAN A second-half comeback that fell just short in kept the Chippewas out of the MAC Tournament. Pelafas was given a red card in the 93rd minute, and the ejection led to the 3-2 Eagle victory in overtime. The final game on the schedule could have major MAC Tournament implications, just as it did a year ago. The Chippewas will play tough in this game, tougher than they might all season long. That tenacity will help them defeat EMU by gaining an early lead and coast to the final whistle.

Football game day experience changes planned for 2019
SPORTS
By Evan Petzold Sports Editor sports@cm-life.com
Notable changes are coming to the Central Michigan football game day experience for the 2019 season, including a live DJ in the student section at the 50yard line. The Chippewas open the season Aug. 29 against Albany at Kelly/Shorts Stadium, where the revamped attractions from CMU Athletics will be on display. In Jim McElwain’s first year, CMU plays six home games: Albany (Aug. 29), Akron (Sept. 14), Eastern Michigan (Oct. 5), New Mexico State (Oct. 12), Northern Illinois (Nov. 2) and Toledo (Nov. 29). When these teams come to Mount Pleasant, the spot those squads occupy won’t be the same as in the past. Due to the construction of the Chippewa Champions Center, the CMU bench will be located on the west side (press box) of the stadium, and the visitors are moving to the east side. Just because the benches are switching sides doesn’t mean the same for the student section and Marching Chips. Those groups will remain on the east side, sitting directly behind the opposing bench. The new DJ in the student section is expected to provide a mix of classic and current music along with creating a product that will “continue to feature” the Marching Chips, according to CMU Athletics.
Evan Petzold | Sports Editor A new scoreboard stands during Central Michigan football media day on Aug. 16.
Here are other notable changes: n The most visible change at Kelly/ Shorts comes to the scoreboard at the south end of the stadium. Installed this summer was a videoboard with Daktronics 13HD and 1,691,872 pixels and an audio system with 16 speakers. The board is 32 feet tall and 100 feet wide. n The Fabiano Brothers Tailgate Village has moved to the south end of The Island, and it will feature the U.S. Army concert series and the Soaring Eagle Club. The U.S. Army concert series features Jedi Mind Trip (Aug. 29, Oct. 5), Douglas James Band (Sept. 14) and PaddleBots (Oct. 12). The live music plays three hours prior to kickoff and is free to all fans.
LIFE IN BRIEF
n New to the northwest area of the stadium is the CMU Family Zone, a spot that opens 90 minutes before the game begins and remains throughout the contest. There will be kid-friendly activities, concessions and special guests with many surprises. The CMU Family Zone is free and open to all fans. n There is also a Student VIP Zone being added, which gives students an opportunity to watch the game from a tent located above the east stands with food, drinks and games provided. n Touchdown Terrace has been removed and will not be relocated because of the ongoing construction.
NEWS AND NOTES FROM AROUND CAMPUS
CENTRAL MICHIGAN PICKED TO FINISH LAST IN MID-AMERICAN CONFERENCE PRESEASON MEDIA POLL The Mid-American Conference released its preseason media poll July 23, and it’s not pretty for the Chippewas. Central Michigan was picked to finish last in the MAC West Division, holding the lowest amount of points among all teams in the conference. Shockingly, first-year coach Jim McElwain’s squad earned one first-place vote. Ohio unanimously earned 24 first-place votes to take the MAC East Division. Miami (Ohio) and Buffalo followed behind. The Bobcats were also selected to win the MAC Championship. In the MAC West, Toledo earned the top slot with 15 first-place votes ahead of Western Michigan (5) and Northern Illinois (3).

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Longtime assistant replaces mentor in monumental coaching change Sara Kellner | Staff Photographer Sue Guevara, Heather Oesterle and Athletic Director Michael Alford pose for a photo after a press conference announcing Guevara’s retirement and Oesterle’s promotion to head coach July 12 at the John G. Kulhavi Events Center.
Oesterle steps out of Guevara’s shadow
Cody Scanlan | Staff Photographer Head coach Heather Oesterle holds a ball during women’s basketball practice on Jan. 22 in McGuirk Arena.
McGuirk Arena will look significantly different when the 2019-20 Central Michigan women’s basketball season tips off in November. Stars from the last four years, Reyna Frost and Presley Hudson, are playing professionally in Europe. Their presence on the floor will be missed. Standouts Tinara Moore and Cassie Breen have also moved on. But there’s one more CMU women’s basketball mainstay that will not be on the bench next year — Sue. Longtime coach Sue Guevara retired July 12 after a 12-year career in Mount Pleasant, where she compiled a 231-156 record. She is the winningest coach in Chippewa history. When Guevara made her decision to call it a career, she went into athletic director Michael Alford’s office July 8 — her 65th birthday. “I’m giving myself a birthday present and it’s called retirement. I need your blessing,” Guevara told Alford.
By Austin Chastain Assistant Sports Editor
“No,” Alford joked. “I need another year.” “No, I can’t do it,” Guevara conceded. What she said next to Alford would eventually set the course of CMU women’s basketball history. Guevara wanted to choose her successor. She recommended one of her assistants and former players at Michigan — Heather Oesterle. “The other thing I need is for you to give Heather a hard, hard look,” Guevara said to Alford. “She has earned this position. She has been by my side for nine years and helped me build my vision for this program.”
Oesterle took on the role of head coach even before she knew she would do so officially, Guevara said. Guevara took a trip to Ireland with alumni and had rotator cuff surgery all within a short timeframe, so Oesterle had been running workouts and other gym sessions in Guevara’s place. The transition, which Oesterle thinks will be smooth, was the plan all along when she interviewed with “Coach G” nine years ago. “(Guevara) told me she was looking for someone to mentor and take over the program someday,” Oesterle said. “I knew that this day would happen at some point, but I didn’t know when. “There’s no place I’d rather be and the mentoring (Guevara) has given me has really helped prepare me for this next step.” As for the Oesterle era in Mount OESTERLE | 36

Pleasant, she said the Chippewas’ style of play will remain the same, conceptually.
The offense will still be fast-paced. They still anticipate crashing the boards for rebound opportunities, even despite losing Mid-American Conference career rebound leader Frost. They will still look to churn out a high amount of offense even after losing all-time Chippewa scorer Hudson. On the defensive end of the floor, Guevara joked that Oesterle might “not play any defense, the kid (Oesterle) loves offense.” Oesterle scored 482 points and doled out 99 assists in 102 games during her four seasons at Michigan. Before coming to CMU, Guevara was the head coach at Michigan from 1996-2003 and was an assistant at Michigan State from 198695 as a part of her 39-year coaching profession. After playing for the Wolverines under Guevara, Oesterle served as an assistant coach at Stanford, Miami (Ohio), Northern Illinois and CMU before being named associate head coach of the Chippewas in 2012. One part of the program that Oesterle has played a major factor in is community outreach. She believes that success on the court begins with taking time for growth away from the game. Oesterle organizes and runs clinics for young fans around the state over the summer and in McGuirk Arena after Chippewa games through-

out the season. What Oesterle wants is for her players to be good people and give back. “Our team has such great role models that I want to get them in front of as many young girls as possible,” Oesterle said. “We go out and run a couple clinics, we’ve done one in Mount Pleasant, we’ve done one in Midland. We like to get out and see and touch as many kids as possible because (the team) are such great role models.” As the 2019-20 school year begins and the women’s basketball season draws ever nearer, it will be culminated by saying, “Goodbye, Sue” and, “Welcome, Heather.” CMU has a new coach at the helm of the program, and Oesterle is ready for the challenge in Mount Pleasant. “I’ve been dreaming about this day for a very long time,” Oesterle said. “I always tell people, ‘Dreams really do come true.’”
