Twitter video raises COVID-19 concerns By Courtney Pedersen & Michael Livingston Associate Editors news@cm-life.com
Central Michigan University’s COVID-19 protocol has been called into question after a video was shared of students reportedly leaving a hall used to quarantine and isolate to attend a party. On Aug. 11, junior Colm Klopcic tweeted his friend’s video taken from his room inside the residence hall the university dedicated to sheltering students exposed to COVID-19. The building houses students who have been instructed by the Central Michigan District Health Department to either quarantine if they have been identified as a close contact of someone who has tested positive for COVID-19 or isolate after they have tested positive. Four of those students met up and decided to go to a party, according to the narrative on the Snapchat video. CMU’s official Twitter account responded to Klopcic on Aug. 12 saying the university is investigating the situation. “CMU is aware of this video and it has been shared with the appropriate offices for investigation,” the response read. “The health and safety of our faculty, staff and students, as well as the Mt. Pleasant community, are our top priorities.” The video’s narrative stated there was no one monitoring the residence hall when the students left. “The incident in question has helped us identify
some issues we’re dedicated to working quickly to resolve,” said Heather Smith, executive director of University Communications. “This is new territory for CMU — as it is for all institutions — and we will continue to adjust our operations to protect the health and safety of our campus and surrounding community.” University officials did not identify the residence hall where the video was taken. Smith provided information on what the residence hall: • Students living off-campus will not quarantine or isolate in the residence hall.
• Staying in the residence hall on campus is one option for students who live on campus if they must quarantine or isolate. They also may choose to return home. • Rooms in the hall are furnished with necessary items and food is delivered. Students receive instruction not to leave their floor and not to congregate or socialize. Residence hall staff check on the students each day, but students are responsible for communicating with medical personnel, health department, professors, family members and others. “We expect students to do their part to keep themselves and others safe, including following guidelines provided to them when entering isolation or quarantine,” Smith said. “We are monitoring the quarantine hall closely, and if a student leaves the dedicated hall, the university will fully investigate whether or not they have violated the student code of conduct.”

Alumna releases video of racial slur used in lecture Journalism professor on paid administrative leave By Courtney Pedersen Associate Editor news@cm-life.com
File Photo | CM-Life Professor Tim Boudreau speaks during a Society of Professional Journalists panel April 11 in Moore Hall.
After a video of him saying a racial slur during a class lecture about a 1993 lawsuit was posted on Instagram, Tim Boudreau, chair of Central Michigan University’s Journalism Department, has been put on paid administrative leave. University officials will not comment on Boudreau’s status with the university. Boudreau said he has been advised not to comment at this time. “The university does not comment on active investigations or personnel matters,” said Ari Harris, Associate Director of Executive Communications at CMU. In the nine-second video, Boudreau can be heard saying, “… so he said… ‘I don’t want you to be like n-----s in the classroom, but I want you to play like n-----s on the court’” during what appears to be a
discussion about the 1993 lawsuit between CMU and fired men’s basketball coach Keith Dambrot. The words Boudreau was recorded saying during the lecture were the comments made by Dambrot to the team, not Boudreau’s own words. On June 22, alumna Skyler Mills, of Miami, Florida, posted a video on Instagram of Boudreau lecturing in his media law class. Mills’ mother, Lisa, commented that the video was taken during her daughter’s junior year. Mills graduated in 2019. “Since we are exposing racists, let me introduce you to @cmuniversity professor Tim Boudreau who freely uses the n-word in class whether it be providing examples or quoting an individual,” Mills, an advertising major, captioned the post. “I know I wasn’t the only student of color who felt humiliated and uncomfortable by his racially insensitive statements.” The university’s official Instagram account responded to Mills on June 24: “Skyler, thank you for bringing this to our attention. We are sorry this happened. At CMU we are committed to building an inclusive environment where every person feels welcome and valued. Racist
conduct by any member of our university community violates that commitment as well as our core values. We have forwarded your message to the appropriate campus offices so they can be properly reviewed. Please know that CMU takes these types of reports seriously and investigates them to the fullest extent possible.” On June 26, faculty received word that Boudreau had been placed on paid administrative leave. Boudreau was appointed chair of the Journalism Department in 2017. He also serves as faculty representative on the Student Media Department’s board of directors which chooses Central Michigan Life’s editor in chief each semester. Faculty member Elina Erzikova will serve as leader of the department. “I am confirming officially that I am acting chair for a brief period of time,” Erzikova said in an email requesting comment. Both Mills and her mother were contacted for comment for this story. Lisa Mills sent a direct message to Central Michigan Life through Instagram stating, “Skyler was asked to hold off on any interviews until their investigation was over with.”

PARKING VIOLATION RATES METER VIOLATION: $15 PARKING PERMIT VIOLATION: $30
By Katie Hixson Staff Reporter news@cm-life.com
On June 25, Central Michigan University Board of Trustees approved a request to increase parking meter prices from 25 cents to 50 cents per hour and increase ticket fines by $5 and late fees by $10. With this increase, a meter parking violation is now $15 and parking in the wrong lot, parking with no pass or parking in a restricted area is now $30. The Parking Department conducted a review of the university’s parking ordinances, fees and rates. CMU had not changed or updated parking rates in over a decade. Stephanie Williams, Business Operations Manager at the CMU Police and Parking Department, said the department was aligning its rates with the Mount Pleasant community and comparable universities. “Our current parking rates and fees still remain below the vast majority of the comparable universities,” Williams said. More than 77 percent of parking revenue generated, including parking permit sales, parking violation fees and meter parking, supports university operations and maintenance related projects. The remaining dollars support the parking operations budget and a portion pays for police training, Williams said. To date, the sale of CMU parking permits has been in alignment with prior years. More information about parking can be found at CMU parking service’s website.

CRIME NEWS COURT DATES DELAYED FOR SUSPECTS ARRESTED FOR APRIL 20 SHOOTING Two men were arrested April 20 for the fatal shooting of Raven Tre-Von Edelen. Miykael Norfleat, 20, of Chicago, and Justin Collins, 22, of Mount Pleasant, were arraigned April 22 in Isabella County Trial Court. Both were charged with open murder and first-degree home invasion. Both are facing additional weapons charges. Police rushed to the 700 block of Edgewood Drive that night to find the 21-year-old dead. Witness statements pointed to Norfleat and Collins as suspects. In the next few days, the two were in Isabella County Jail pending arraignment. Preliminary exams were supposed to happen in May. Isabella County Trial Court delayed the appearances multiple times due to COVID-19 health and safety concerns. WAYSIDE STABBING SUSPECT WILL APPEAR IN CIRCUIT COURT NEXT MONTH Central Michigan University freshman Octayvious Sanchez-Lewis is accused of stabbing three men on Feb. 22 at Wayside Central. Sanchez-Lewis, 19, of Farmington Hills, is charged with three counts of assault with the intent to murder. His preliminary examination began on March 12 and ended on May 19 before Judge Sara Spencer-Noggle in Isabella County Trial Court. This case is now headed to Circuit Judge Mark H. Duthie. The trial is scheduled for Sep. 1. CMU students John Sage and Charles Sims, two of the three men injured in the fight, testified in court May 19 with differing accounts of the night in question. Roommates and fraternity brothers, Sage and Sims arrived at Wayside together that night. Both men were involved in an altercation on the dance floor. The other man injured in the fight, Terren
Howard, had reportedly arrived at Wayside with Sanchez-Lewis and was stabbed on the wrist. Dr. James Inman of McLaren Central Michigan treated Sage for his injuries. He testified that Sage’s injury was Octayvious life-threatening. Sanchez-Lewis Dr. Larissa Trail of Mid Michigan Health treated Sims and Howard. She testified that Sims was treated for two stab wounds, one to the right posterior thigh and one to the genitalia. Sims’ injury to his thigh was potentially life-threatening, due to the risk or bleeding, hemorrhage, secondary infection and compartment syndrome, Trail said. - Katie Hixson Staff Reporter

Student starts petition to rename buildings
Nearly 1,500 people support removing Foust, Kelly from campus structures By Courtney Pedersen Associate Editor news@cm-life.com
Anthony Wilson said he chose to attend CMU to escape racism. However, when the senior from Georgia began his degree program he said he faced discrimination in the meteorology department from both students and faculty. The Multicultural and Advancement Cofer Scholar is helping lead a new generation of students who are advocating for change at CMU. This summer, Wilson created a Change.org petition to rename Foust Hall. After speaking with former Chippewa, Cecil Rice, Wilson amended the petition to request that Kelly-Shorts Stadium also be renamed. Flashback to the 1960s. Rice arrived at football practice one afternoon to find his teammates listening to Bill Kelly, Central Michigan University’s Head Football Coach from 1951 until 1966. “(Kelly) was telling the team a joke,” Rice remembered. “(My teammates) were waving at him, trying to tell him to stop, but he didn’t know I was behind him. “The joke was something like, ‘You know why we still have n*****s in America?,’ he said, ‘Because we haven’t started playing cowboys and n*****s yet.’” Experiences like these were the reasons Rice agreed to help Central Michigan Life investigate discrimination students of color faced from off-campus housing landlords. In January 1965, CM Life Managing Editor Tom Needels approached Rice and student body Vice President Gene Ragland. He recruited them to take part in an experiment to prove or disprove the rumor that Black students were being discriminated against by the householders. The plan was Ragland, a white man, and Rice, a Black man, would apply to the same 15 approved, off-campus housing locations. The question was, who would accept who? After finishing their survey, the students discovered that all 15 of the off-campus homes accepted Ragland’s application. Rice was rejected by 10 of the 15. “(Rice) was good enough when he played football for Central Michigan. Good enough to be cheered — but not good enough to live within the same house,” the CM Life story read. “At least that’s what 10 out of 15 householders that had openings thought.” After the story was published, it caught the attention of both students and community members. It also prompted a response from President Foust. “My attitude is there wasn’t any problem here

and someone is just trying to start one,” Foust commented in a Feb. 19, 1965 CM Life article. “The survey simply emphasized the fact that certain people didn’t have any rooms open and should have emphasized the point that some people did ... Why talk about something if there isn’t any problem.” This response outraged Rice and Wilson. “Foust openly fostered an environment that promoted racism by not actively addressing it,” Wilson said. “Beyond some of his views towards his minority students, his treatment of faculty and staff remains in question as he often overstepped the rights of faculty and staff.” In June, Wilson submitted a statement to the Board of Trustees asking them to remove Foust’s name from the building. President Bob Davies responded to an email
from Wilson before the meeting. Wilson posted the response from Davies as an update to the Change.org petition. “While they will likely not take action on Foust Hall during the meeting this week, know that your thoughts and words are heard and will not go unnoticed,” Davies wrote to Wilson. “I expect the Trustees will direct me to present a complete and comprehensive plan and process for addressing a variety of issues, including the issues you raise with Foust Hall, rather than managing each individual item piecemeal.” Foust Hall was named in honor of CMU’s sixth president by the Board of Trustees in 1973, Kelly-Shorts Stadium was originally called Perry Shorts Stadium in 1972, named after alumnus and donor R. Perry Shorts of Saginaw. In 1983, the Board of Trustees voted to rename
the building to include Kelly, who was the university’s winningest football coach. Kelly died in 1984 and was inducted in the CMU Athletics Hall of Fame in 1985. In his petition, Wilson asked if the CMU community wants students congregating in a stadium named after someone who didn’t want Black students on campus. Wilson said that although renaming a building and football stadium isn’t enough to fix inequities on campus, he believes it is a good place to start. “I think that as a campus community we are looking for unity and a campus that is representative of all students,” Wilson said. “African American students on this campus continue to deal with systemic inequities that exist within our society.”

Central Michigan University IMPACT mentor coordinator and Midland junior Stella Stark lets incoming CMU students into the Industrial Education and Technology on Aug. 13.

Incoming Central Michigan University students received a warm, but restricted, welcome during the 2020 CMU IMPACT program on Aug. 13 and 14. The university program introduces incoming multicultural freshmen and transfer students to CMU while meeting fellow incoming students. While the program is aimed at multicultural students, anyone is able to participate, mentor coordinator Stella Stark said. “They get a sneak peek of the campus,” said the Midland junior. “We also give them tips and wisdom on how to succeed in college.” This year, the IMPACT program had to operate differently than years past due to the novel coronavirus pandemic. Social distancing and wearing a mask were a requirement during the event. Stark said mentors were told to keep things positive during the sessions by emphasizing services and activities students can utilize instead of the ones that were suspended due to the pandemic. Incoming students and their upperclassmen mentors were divided up into groups or “families” that were taken to rooms in Brooks
Hall, Moore Hall and the Industrial Education and Technology Building with limited capacities to maintain social distancing. Students watched videos and virtual speeches and chatted with their families outside. Director of Student Activities & Involvement Damon Brown spoke to the participants, during which he welcomed incoming students. He said IMPACT assists students in starting their college careers, connect them to campus resources and help develop relationships between fellow freshmen and upperclassmen. He also spoke about staying safe during the students’ freshmen years by following campus health and safety guidelines. The two-day event also contained a panel and keynote speakers. One of these speakers was CMU alumnus Natilie Williams, an author, college instructor and speaker. She spoke about tips and advice for freshmen coming to CMU. She recommended students utilize resources, such as office hours and counseling services, and observe and chat with upperclassmen to gain their knowledge. “It’s a new environment for you, but you are
in an environment of people that have already done it (and) that have already succeeded,” Williams said. “You’re also in an environment with people that did not succeed or may not be succeeding. So, while a smart person learns from their mistakes, a wise person learns from the mistakes of others.” Saginaw freshman Lyric Peterson said the speech was straightforward and helped breakdown tips and advice to follow. She worried about finding new friends with the pandemic restrictions on campus though, but said programs like IMPACT help with that. Many enjoyed the multicultural aspects as well. Peterson wanted to jump right into an inclusive environment on campus and incoming Holt freshman Stephanie Venn participated in IMPACT to meet like-minded people. “Sometimes, especially as a Black woman, when you do well in school, everybody calls you the exception,” Venn said. “(They) don’t understand what a slap in the face that is. It’s nice to know that you don’t have to be a statistical outlier to be successful with this knowledge.”

The Central Michigan University symptom monitoring application CMICH Healthscreen launched on July 27, for all students, faculty and staff to use to monitor their health and to prevent the spread of COVID-19 on campus. According to the Fired Up for Fall website, faculty, staff and students are required to self-screen each day for COVID-19 symptoms before coming to campus. In the health screening portion of the app, individuals are asked if they had close contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19 in the past 14 days. The Center for Disease Control defines close contact with a COVID-19 positive person as having been within six feet of the individual for 15 minutes or longer and 48 hours prior to when the infected individual first started experiencing symptoms. Next, app users are asked if they are experiencing shortness of breath, cough, fever or any other symptoms related to COVID-19. If a faculty member, staff or student

staff and authorized Office of Information and Technology staff have access to the data. Clinic staff must follow up on all positive responses and OIT staff act as data custodian in protecting and administering the data in accordance with the University Data Stewardship Policy. The case tracking resources portion shows the weekly number and the total number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 on campus and is updated every week. This portion also offers a variety of videos, guidelines and tips to help prevent contact with the virus or a carrier. “This app is another layer of steps we are taking to provide a healthy and safe environment for our faculty, staff and students,” Veilleux said. “It also keeps us in compliance with the governor’s executive orders, but more importantly it adds to the overall efforts we are taking to intentionally make our campus safe for our community.” CMICH Healthscreen was developed by staff in the Office of Information Technology and is available for download on the app store for all smart devices. More information about the health screen app can be found on the Fired Up for Fall website.

fter a spring and summer of social distancing, and an early move-in, some Central Michigan University students were ready to celebrate being together during Welcome Weekend. Welcome Weekend consisted of clear, warm nights. On a drive down Main Street, and the surrounding neighborhood, students could be seen playing beer-pong, music was blasting from speakers and police cruisers from across Central Michigan were driving up and down streets. President Bob Davies went on a ride-along with the CMU Police Department to several off-campus houses and apartments. He
said that at each gathering he encouraged students to wear masks and practice social distancing. “I want to reiterate that message as often as possible and everywhere possible,” Davies said. “We all share a responsibility to protect ourselves and others, and to slow the spread of COVID-19, whether we are in a classroom or in a social setting.” Videos of Davies playing cornhole with some students on Friday were shared across social media and garnered responses from students on Twitter. On Aug. 4, Davies sent an email ahead of Welcome Weekend to students at CMU. In the letter to campus, the president warned students of his concerns for those taking part in weekend celebrations. “Nationwide, the virus continues to spread and there is still no vaccine or cure,” Davies said. “This means that every time we interact with others, we run the risk of spreading infection, even when we feel healthy. “ Further in the email, Davies told students to “avoid large gatherings.” Welcome Weekend turned into “Welcome Week” with parties beginning as early as Tuesday. Public information officer for the Mount Pleasant Police Department Autume Balcom said officers cited the host of a nuisance party Wednesday night. Thursday through Saturday night had extra police officers from six different police agencies. Midland, Shepherd and Michigan
State Police patrolled alongside Mount Pleasant and CMU police. On Saturday, 30-40 people gathered outside Deerfield Apartments with few masks being worn. Saginaw sophomore John Guerra said he looked forward to the party. He wanted to see his high school friends and meet new people. He did not feel unsafe since he wasn’t sharing drinks or rubbing up against people, apart from fist bumps. Guerra said he was sick a couple times in the past couple months. He thinks his immune system is “tough enough.” Guerra was not tested for COVID-19 but thinks he had it at some point this summer. “(An outbreak) is definitely a concern and going online for the rest of the semester, if not, the rest of the year,” Guerra said. “You can’t live in fear of having fun or else you’re not gonna live.” Other CMU students expressed frustration on social media with their peers who threw Welcome Weekend parties. “I think students need to take a step back and ask what level of risk is worth it to them and also acknowledge that they are not only putting themselves at risk, but the entire community around them,” Waterford graduate student Autumn Gairaud said. “Personally, I wouldn’t be able to live with myself if I found out I potentially exposed someone to COVID-19 or made them lose a loved one because I had partied without a mask on and been unsafe.”

Students, staff will have an unprece

ecause she is starting her Central Michigan University experience during the COVID-19 pandemic, Lindsay Fleck is worried about meeting new people on campus while remaining safe. “It will be hard to truly meet people and get to know them with all the social distancing and face mask requirements,” the Vicksburg freshman said. “It may, however, give me an even better chance to become friends with my roommates.” CMU is requiring students, faculty and staff to wear face coverings in public spaces and social distance while on campus as the Center for Disease Control and Prevention and other organizations suggest. As students begin classes two weeks earlier than originally scheduled, and before other competing universities, CMU has distributed guidelines on different platforms. The Fired Up for Fall page, emails and social media provide information to students, staff, parents and visitors to campus. It will be up to students, and others, to actually follow these guidelines to prevent a COVID-19 outbreak on campus. “We are committed to doing everything we can as a university to protect your health and safety, and we also rely on you to take appropriate measures to prevent the spread of the virus,” President Bob Davies said in an email to students Aug. 11. “Several spaces, mostly classrooms when they are not in use, have been identified specifically for students who need study space,” the Emergency Management Team said. “These spaces and the times they’re available will soon be communicated to students.” The Charles V. Park Library will be open for students while complying with the State of Michigan Executive order 2020-161, item six. Under this order, there is a capacity limit of four people per 1,000 square feet. Although there is not a set maximum occupancy for the library, there is limited seating and computer access. While studying at the library, students are required to have only one person per table, adhere to designated cubicle spaces and disinfect surfaces before and after using them. Group study rooms will not be available, but specialized spots for the vulnerable population are available. All physical book stacks in the library are not available for students to peruse and check out, but will be available for contact-free pick up to reduce handling of materials while still allowing access. All course reserve books will be available online only for the semester. “You can use Smart Search to place a hold on the book(s) you want,” Irwin explained in the post. “You will receive an email when your books is ready with a link to schedule a day and time to pick up your book(s) from the library lobby of the library. When you’re finished with a book, you can return it in one of the book drops near the library entrances.” As executive orders still have closures on indoor gyms, the Student Activities Center is staging everything to be ready as the order is lifted.

“We have now been advantaged by the Governor revising the executive order and allowing us now to have classes in the SAC,” said Stan Shingles, assistant vice president of University Recreation and student engagement. “This will allow staffing, and for us to test new protocols during this time. We will also be open for meeting space, but cannot open gyms and fitness spaces yet.” Registered Student Organizations are required to follow CMU guidelines and are strongly encouraged to meet remotely. RESIDENCE HALLS Midland sophomore Aria Segura is looking forward to the start of the fall semester and living with friends in Larzelere Hall, regardless of the new safety protocols. “I am really not feeling very concerned about my actual living situation, just because I know they are all going to be safe,” Segura said. Since not all students, especially incoming freshmen, know their roommates well enough to have the same confidence in their living situations, safety guidelines will be strictly enforced by Residence Hall staff. To minimize close contact, the capacity in residence hall rooms has been reduced. In addition, shared spaces in each hall – such as kitchens, laundry areas and study rooms – will have limited access and must be disinfected before and after use. According to the Office of Residence Life, visitors who do not live on campus are strongly discouraged in the residence halls and on campus apartments. “Visitors who must come to campus should remain in residence hall lobbies where social distancing is possible,” the Office of Residence Life said in a FAQ. “No overnight guests will be allowed in university residence halls or apartments for the Fall 2020 semester.” If an on-campus resident tests positive for COVID-19, they will have the option to self-isolate in a designated residence hall on campus or return home to self-isolate. However, if an on-campus student has been in close contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, they must quarantine for 14 days either in a designated residence hall space or return home. Face coverings must be worn in public spaces, both indoors and outdoors, at all times. If a student refuses to comply they will be referred to the Office of Student Conduct.

CAMPUS DINING ENFORCES SAFETY MEASURES Dining halls will no longer serve as a social experience, strictly for dining By Katie Hixson Staff Reporter news@cm-life.com
Unlike most of his friends, Farmington sophomore Rafael Garza has spent lots of time educating himself on the Fall 2020 campus guidelines. He still has concerns, specifically with dining hall procedures. “If we were already having long lines and wait times, how are we going to do that with 50 percent capacity?” Garza said. “We will have to wait longer. Nothing is self-served anymore. Now we will have to wait for an employee which will be an even longer wait.” Garza looked at the Campus Dining FAQ for Fall 2020 to learn as much as possible to calm his nerves, but not all of his questions were answered. n In the dining halls, how will face masks be enforced? Central Michigan University requires everyone able to wear a covering over their nose and mouth when inside all dining facilities. Like restaurants, students can only remove their face masks when sitting at a table. n How will the service stations be changed to prevent the spread of COVID-19? Plexiglas barriers are positioned at various points of dining halls. A Mexican food station will temporarily replace the Mongolian Grill at Fresh Food Company and Real Food On Campus to maintain consistent menu options. International stations have been integrated into the Southern Kitchen station to continue offering a diverse menu. Certain food items at self-serve stations have been temporarily discontinued. Condiments will only be available at individual stations. n What precautions are the staff taking to prevent the spread of COVID-19? CMU has initiated enhanced cleaning protocols in dining facilities for high-risk and high-touch areas. All residential restaurants will close daily from 3 to 4:30 p.m. for deep cleaning. Students are encouraged to dine at residential

restaurants located in their own living community. Sanitizer stations will also be available throughout the residential restaurants. n How has capacity been reduced to and will it be enforced? Following state and local guidelines, seating capacity inside dining halls will be limited to 50 percent. Tables and chairs have been removed and spaced out around the dining halls to encourage proper social distancing. Students
are advised to avoid peak dining hours from noon to 1 p.m. and 5 to 6 p.m. Students are also advised to limit the amount of time sitting and eating to 30 minutes when possible. n Will To-Go meals be more available to students and what will that process look like? All students with a CMU meal plan will be given a takeout container at the beginning of the fall semester. Replacement containers will be available for purchase at greeter stands inside residential restaurants for $8. No refunds or returns of takeout containers will be accepted. If a student decides to get a takeout meal from a dining hall, they must bring takeout containers to the restaurant and notify the greeter upon entering. The container must be clean. Once they swipe or tap their student ID to enter, greeters will exchange their container with a clean, sanitized one. Students can then visit food stations and allow staff to fill their container. Students may request up to two servings of each food selection. All takeout food must fit in the designated container. In addition to a takeout container, students may grab one to-go beverage and one piece of fruit, which does not have to fit in the container. Only one take-
out container may be filled per guest, per visit. Students must leave the dining hall to eat their meal. n Are students still allowed to share their meal swipes? With limited seating capacity in the residential restaurants, meal plans for commuters, faculty, staff, graduate students and on campus apartment residents have been discontinued for fall semester. However, these students, faculty and staff are welcome to eat inside dining halls occasionally using credit or FLEX Dollars. FLEX Dollar packages are available for those living off campus that wish to dine at the food court, coffee shops and on campus markets. The university is unaware of what will specifically happen within the semester in this unpredictable time.

PREPARING FOR BATTLE esports readies for Fall 2020 with interest nights, tryouts
C
entral Michigan’s esports program is set to welcome in its newest recruits. With the new gaming center in the Student Activity Center ready for use, the program is going to host interest nights during the first week of classes before tryouts for its four varsity games — expanded from two last season. The program will feature two games a night from 6-8 p.m. on Aug. 19-20. Rocket League and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Aug. 19) and Overwatch and League of Legends (Aug. 20) will be streamed on the program’s Twitch channel.

“Basically, our scheduled interest nights are used to drum up interest and to let people know the space is there on campus and they are welcome to use it,” program adviser and head coach Katherine Ranzenberger said. While tryouts will be hosted in the gaming center and the program’s temporary space, affectionately called “T2” (for “Temporary, Temporary Space”), all of the interest nights will be streamed on the program’s Twitch channel. During the Twitch streams, prospective students are able to chat with team members to ask questions and get to know them and the program without having to be present in the gaming center. “That way, people can remain socially distant and be comfortable,” Ranzenberger said. “But also get to know the players that are on the teams, that will be helping lead the teams.” While there will be action on campus for tryouts, the gaming center will be limited to 10 people at a time. “T2” will have six spots available and masks will be required to be in either location. University sanitizing and social distancing guidelines will be used throughout the center. “That shouldn’t stop people from coming out and seeing what we can do,” Ranzenberger said. “Even if they’re just walking by because there are windows that look in and screens on the outside that lets them see the action that’s happening on the inside.” During the semester, use of the gaming center will be limited to only those on one of the teams the program supports. As for tryouts, which are set for Aug. 22-23, prospects can sign up for a tryout spot through Engage Central. Ranzenberger said she prefers to have students to try out in person so she is able to see how that person plays and how well each player communicates, as communication is one of the most important pieces of esports. “Being able to see how people interact and communicate in person is a huge part of teambuilding,” Ranzenberger said. “If somebody isn’t comfortable coming in person, I would love to talk to them and work with them so they can still participate and try out.” She hopes to fill out a Maroon and Gold team — with Gold as the “first team” — for each of the four games. For example, Overwatch has 6-on-6 matches, so, there would be 12 players then two reserves for each team, totaling 16 players. On June 10, the esports Collegiate Conference partnered with the Mid-American Conference to include all 12 of the MAC’s members. The team is also competing in the National Association of Collegiate Esports. “Being able to have consistent people to scrim against and able to have teams out there that are doing exactly what we’re doing, that puts us all on a level playing field which is a great thing when it comes to esports, that doesn’t happen super often in other sports,” Ranzenberger said. “You see these other conferences pop up, it really gives us a chance to compete against others in Michigan, as well as others across the nation.

“For the Esports Collegiate Conference, in particular, it just shows the camaraderie of those schools and the tradition we have as a group, which is pretty cool. It shows you just how many connections have been made between the schools.” Ranzenberger said returning to work was daunting at first, but with all of the procedures and cleaning policies CMU has put in place, she has felt more comfortable as time has gone along. She said the team and the university are doing everything to ensure student safety going into the Fall 2020 semester to help combat the COVID-19 pandemic. “I’m honestly just really excited to get back into the swing of things with competition,” Ranzenberger said. “Everybody talks about wanting to get back to normal, while I also want that, I understand that there is a new normal and I’m excited to learn what that is. I’m excited to be able to help students learn what their new normal is, too, not just within esports, but within their life.”

W
hen Jon Steinbrecher was tasked with making the decision to cancel the 2020 Mid-American Conference men’s and women’s basketball tournaments in March, he said he did not let his emotions take over; just work through the situation. Steinbrecher, the commissioner of the MAC, said he had a similar feeling on Aug. 8 when he was tasked with canceling the 2020 fall sports season. After discussions with athletic directors and university presidents, the 12 presidents unanimously voted to cancel the fall season amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The MAC was the first conference in the Football Bowl Subdivision to pull the plug on its 2020 football season along with the other fall sports. The Big Ten and Mountain West conferences canceled the fall season and the Pac12 suspended all competition until 2021. Some conferences – the ACC, SEC, Big 12, American Athletic Conference, Conference USA and Sun Belt – have announced plans to continue forward with a fall season. On Aug. 13, the NCAA canceled all of its fall championships in 2020 for everything except FBS football. The sports affected by the MAC’s decision are men’s and women’s cross country, field hockey, football, men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volleyball. “This is simply a miserable decision,” Steinbrecher said. “It is a decision that affects roughly 2,500 student-athletes who live for the moment to compete. Those opportunities and moments are fleeting and our student-athletes have a limited window in which to showcase their talent, their passion and their drive for excellence.”
League presidents met on Aug. 6. The meeting lasted longer than anticipated and carried over to Aug. 8 when the presidents met again and made the decision to cancel the season. While the league said it plans to move all of its fall sports to the spring, there is no firm timeline on when that would take place. “If you told me in March we’d be here today, I would have never believed it,” Steinbrecher said. “Over the last several weeks, you’re certainly contemplating what some of the possibilities could be. Hoped this wouldn’t be the case, but here we are.” Winter sports, such as men’s and women’s basketball, gymnastics and wrestling, among others, are still planned to be played as scheduled. Shutting down the fall sports season was not made with the financial ramifications in mind, rather, the health and well-being of the student-athletes and coaches, Steinbrecher said. In football alone, the conference was set to lose millions from canceled football games at Power Five schools. Central Michigan missed out on $2.15 million after games at Nebraska and Northwestern were canceled due to the Big Ten announcing a conference-only schedule. “It would be naïve to say that you don’t give thought and consideration to what the financial ramifications of any decision are, but this was a health and well-being decision, first and foremost,” Steinbrecher said. “We don’t know what this will mean financially.” Steinbrecher said the health experts he and the conference sought advice from were uncomfortable with putting student-athletes in a position to play when it could be potentially
dangerous to their health by playing sports and potentially spreading COVID-19 by doing so. As of now, CMU started in-person classes on Aug. 17 with HyFlex and online models available to students. “Who knows what the future holds,” Steinbrecher said. “Our presidents are working hard with their staffs and those across the country are hopeful that we can get our campuses open and the students and faculty back in the classroom.” Steinbrecher said he felt no pressure being the first FBS conference to cancel the season or to hold off on making the decision. “We talked about a lot of issues,” Steinbrecher said. “We talked about a lot of different options, an array of things. We believe, as a league, we’ve taken a leadership stance.” Steinbrecher said he is not sure yet on how eligibility and other transfer rules will be affected with the decision. He said the NCAA will have the final say on eligibility. “The NCAA Council and other governance groups are already aware of those things and are having conversations on that,” Steinbrecher said, “Those are decisions that we’re going to need to receive from our national governing body, hopefully, in the not too distant future so we can guide our student-athletes.” If a football season is played in the spring, Steinbrecher said coaches and staff will be the leaders to help try and make a season in the fall of 2021 possible with the health of wellness of the student-athletes a priority. “I would remind people that whether it’s football or any other fall sport,” Steinbrecher said, “they have a non-championship segment practice
opportunity and competitive opportunity in the spring. They are active during that period of time, they’ll dig in deep. “We’re going to make our decisions on can we move forward and do so in a way that is responsive of the health and well-being of the student-athletes.” High-profile student-athletes – Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence and Ohio State’s Justin Fields, among others – have made demands as part of the #WeWantToPlay and #WeAreUnited movements started by athletes in Power Five conferences. Athletes that are part of the movement want uniform health and safety protocols, the ability to opt-out without penalty and the ability to have a voice. Players throughout the MAC, led by Akron’s Kavari Adams, have formed a #MACUnited movement on Twitter. A statement accompanied with #SpringIntoMACtion applauded campus leaders for looking out for the health of studentathletes. “As one of the first Division I conference to postpone fall competition, we again commend our university and conference leader for prioritizing our health and safety,” the statement read. “With no guarantee of spring season and the current state of COVID-19, we now challenge those same leaders to prepare a plan that protects the eligibility of all athletes within our conference. “We understand the uncertainty of this pandemic but we know there is a finite opportunity in our lives to compete as collegiate athletes. We want to make sure all studentathletes get all the #MACtion we signed up for.”

AUG. 17, 2020
My name is Isaac Ritchey, and I’ll be at the helm of Central Michigan Life for the Fall 2020 semester. I came to Central Michigan University in 2017 unsure of what path I wanted to take. It was halfway through my freshman year that I found a home at CM Life. Just like many other CMU students, I am returning to Mount Pleasant for my senior year amid unique circumstances. There is a lot that is testing me as an individual right now — the COVID-19 pandemic, one of the most divisive presidential elections in United States history and a national conversation on social injustice and struggles facing people of color. This semester, I plan to lean on my experiences as a journalist while trying to seek out the truth. I have two semesters left and plenty of unanswered questions for our university. As editor in chief, I manage the student-run newspaper, which for 100 years has presented comprehensive coverage of events and issues affecting the CMU community. CM Life is a nationally-respected student media company that wins awards every year for our coverage of student issues. The content we publish is editorially independent from the university. We receive money from CMU to fund a professional/
|
Isaac Ritchey Editor-in-Chief administrative position and a business manager. The bulk of the money that funds student journalism comes from ads sales and other services offered by our business team. If you are new to campus, let’s talk about the things CM Life does every day to bring change to Mount Pleasant. When much of campus shut down in March, we were here working. We were informing our readers about CMU’s decisions for the semester and showing you the impact of those decisions. I spent my time photographing and telling the story of essential workers whose jobs were being overlooked. I wrote also an article about Morgan Trainer, who used her time and money while quarantined making masks for front line workers. I am not the only one. CM Life has a history of employing student journal-
ists hungry to serve CMU and the city of Mount Pleasant. In 1965, CM Life investigated the unfair treatment of Black students searching for housing in Mount Pleasant. The article, written by managing editor Tom Needels, sparked change in the area. More recently in 2019, we published a story exploring the “dark side of Greek life.” The story exposed a banned fraternity accused of using date rape drugs, sexual assault and assaulting police officers. CM Lifers graduate and continue their careers at places like the New York Times, Washington Post, Detroit Free Press, The Detroit News, Mlive and many other news outlets. Today they are on the front lines of COVID-19 coverage. They’ve also covered national stories close to home like the Flint Water Crisis and the flood that affected residents in Midland County. They win Pulitzer Prizes, but more importantly they tell the stories that matter most to the communities they serve. This summer, I hired a staff of journalists who believe in the same things I do. I believe in my staff’s integrity and hunger for seeking and reporting the truth. I think every one at this university should, too. The CM Life staff will be fighting every day to inform students on campus and members of the Mount Pleasant communi-
ty. We believe transparency should come from the university, city government and police and that our questions should be answered. We’re just like you. We want to see change at CMU and beyond. I believe CM Life is the best platform to have those conversations. I want CM Life to give students who feel overlooked and underrepresented a voice and a venue to express their opinions and concerns. There is nowhere else on campus that option to share your story is openly provided to students. International students, members of the LGBTQ community and minority students should have a heightened role in the decision-making processes at CMU. I want you to know CM Life is listening to you. We want students of color and members of the LGBTQ community to help us tell the stories they know better than anyone else. I want our newsroom to reflect campus and be a place where all students are getting the same opportunities as I am. I want to be helping progress the conversation on campus at CM Life, not taking away from it. I believe change at CMU starts with coverage in CM Life. I invite you to be part of that change.
Dear freshman, don’t be afraid to get lost I’m going to be honest with you, during my freshman year here at Central Michigan University, I was completely lost. I was an undecided major far away from home who knew absolutely no one. Now, two years later, I have friends, a career path, and memories that will last forever. In high school, you’re on a four-year path that is already planned out for you. The teachers tell you exactly which six classes to take every year. If you follow their plan you walk out with a diploma, the quadratic equation and you are supposedly ready to take on the world. In college, everything changes. You choose everything. You choose your classes, residence halls, schedule, meal plan and your own path. When you’re a small, scared and lost freshman, those decisions can be overwhelming. During my orientation, we were divided into groups based on our planned major. The only problem was, I had no clue what I wanted to major in. I was plopped in the
Katie Hixson Staff Reporter “Undecided” group. The first thing that the speaker for our group told us was that we were the honest group, and that everyone else who said they “knew” their major was kidding themselves. I laughed and immediately felt at ease. When it was time to schedule my first semester of classes, I was lost, again, in all the choices. But I asked for help from a wiser, older student who knew which professors to recommend and which buildings I could sprint to in under 15 minutes. After orientation, my first semester started to look a lot less scary. I remembered what made me commit to
Central: my campus tour. When we were walking through the residence halls, I noticed that every door was propped open by a painted rock or brick. The tour guide told me students leave their doors open so they can make new friends. They paint the rocks at a rock painting party the first week of classes, and they use their pieces of art to prop open their doors the rest of the year. Then I realized something: If you open your door at CMU, you’ll fit right in. So throughout the year, I did exactly that. I got involved. I joined the Chippewa Marching Band as a piccolo where I met some of the best people I have ever known. I got involved in the Deaf culture events around campus and I met new people in the ASL minor. I entered math competitions and hung out with friends from my calculus class. I started working at the school newspaper, Central Michigan Life, and met some of the biggest personalities and funniest people ever. I went to basketball games with my roommates and cheered on
our team until our voices were gone. Suddenly, I found myself starting to feel like I belonged here at Central. Everything fit into place. Now don’t get me wrong, I was still lost. I went to my Tuesday class on a Monday. I circled the North block three times before finding the right building. I slept through my 8a.m. And one night I even forgot about my night class and didn’t realize I missed it until three days later. I’m going into my third year here at CMU and I already don’t want college to be over. These are the best years of our lives. Nowhere else on Earth are you both a functioning adult and a lost little kid at the same time. Where else can you wear pajamas everyday but still have to pay taxes every spring? It’s awesome. So live it up while you can. My advice to incoming freshmen is this: don’t be afraid to get lost, because you never know what great experiences you might stumble upon along the way.

A DIFFERENT EXPERIENCE Each of us needs to do our part to help keep CMU’s campus safe, healthy We are back on campus. Finally. The answer to the question “How long?” is up to us as students. On Thursday, an excited but concerned parade of parents helped move belongings into Central Michigan University residence halls. Unlike years before, they were unsure what experiences were awaiting their children as they said goodbye. We are all wondering what the rest of this year has in store. Since March, we have listened to experts telling us to wear a mask, to stay away from crowded spaces and to stay home when we can. Now, we are moving into residence halls and apartments where we’ll be sharing enclosed spaces with others. We’ll be walking the same hallways, riding the same elevators and sitting in the same classrooms. This fall semester will not be like other semesters. We’ve already lost experiences that we look forward to and the semester has just begun. There will be no tailgates or football games. There are no pickup basketball games at the Student Activity
Center. There won’t be any concerts to attend in person. Freshmen won’t be able to flock to Wayside Central on a Friday night looking for their first taste of freedom. Bars won’t be filled elbow-to-elbow with upperclassman looking to unwind after a week of capstone classes. No one knows how long we’ll be able to stay on campus, but we need to make the most of our time here. We can do that by being accountable for the health and safety of ourselves and each other. CMU has put health and safety guidelines in place for students, but they will only work if followed. We’ve listed some ways you can help keep campus healthy, and open, in this edition: wear your mask, social distance and be aware of any potential symptoms. The power we have as students shouldn’t be discounted. Just because this semester is unlike others doesn’t mean we can’t make a difference at CMU. Be positive and make the most of this fall. We all should hold the same goal of finishing this
semester safely and in the best of health. The semester has only begun, but there is already change happening at this university. Petitions have been started to rename buildings on campus that honor campus figures who did not have the best interest of all students in mind. Others are attempting to combat racial injustice and defend students’ Title IX rights. This can be your year to support your fellow students and help make CMU the best university it can be. One way you can do that is by reaching out to us. Help our student journalists tell the stories you know better than anyone, the ones you want to read. Every student finds themselves in the same circumstance this semester – being in this socially distanced space, trying to figure out our classes and hoping that we, and our families, remain safe from COVID-19. We are all in this together. Let’s keep that in mind and help each other get through this weird year.
