QB tests positive for illegal substance, is suspended By Evan Petzold Sports Editor sports@cm-life.com

Isaac Ritchey | Senior Reporter Central Michigan quarterback David Moore looks down the field at Waldo Stadium after losing to arch-rival Western Michigan Sept. 28 in Kalamazoo.

Quarterback David Moore has tested positive for a banned substance and has been suspended by the NCAA. The university announced it plans to appeal the NCAA’s decision. Moore is ineligible to play through the appeal process. While CMU did not deny Moore’s positive test, it cited the use of an over-the-counter nutritional supplement as the likely cause. The university, which found out about Moore’s suspension Monday, did not detail the specific over-the-counter supplement the quarterback used. According to the NCAA, the penalty for a positive test of a performance-enhancing

drug is automatic. If the ruling is upheld, Moore will lose one full year of eligibility and will be unable to pay for 365 days from the date of the test. For a second positive test of a banned substance, the quarterback would lose all remaining eligibility. Central Michigan Athletic Director Michael Alford met with Moore and football coach Jim McElwain. He announced the decision to appeal the NCAA’s ruling. “The university partners with the NCAA to ensure its student-athletes play by the rules and exhibit the highest level of conduct,” Alford said in a press release. “Based on the university’s review of the available evidence, the university has decided to appeal this ruling.”

Throughout the suspension, regardless of the ruling is upheld, Moore will be allowed to practice. When McElwain was the head coach at Florida from 2015-17, quarterback Will Grier received a one-year suspension on Oct. 12, 2015, after testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug called Ligandrol – a treatment for muscle wasting and osteoporosis. The NCAA rejected an appeal from Grier. Moore came to Central Michigan from Garden City Community College, where he played the 2018 season after transferring from Memphis. This season the 6-foot-2, 180-pound junior quarterback has completed 94 of 164 passes for 1,143 yards, five touchdowns and four interceptions.

Health Professions Residential College celebrates 20th year By Courtney Pederson Staff Reporter news@cm-life.com

This year Central Michigan University Health Professions Residential College is celebrating its 20-year anniversary. The residential college will be celebrating the anniversary in conjunction with Homecoming events on Oct. 12. The Herbert H. and Grace A. Dow College of Health Professions tent in Alumni Village will be celebrating the anniversary at homecoming. "We'll have students walking in the parade, and at the alumni tent we will have old pictures and scrapbooks from throughout the years," Pat Cwiek said. In 1999, founding Dean Stephen Koop worked with Residence Life to create a health professions living and learning community. Later, a group of students

in the living and learning community invited Pat Cwiek, who was hired to teach a health professions seminar, to help them turn the com-

munity into a program. With approval from Koop and residence life, the group began to research and brainstorm ideas to transform the

community into a residential college. "As we came up with the ideas, I would draft them on the computer and send those

off to the dean of the College of Health Professions first and then to Residence Life to get approval," Cwiek said. Later that year, HPRC was

off to an official start with a small student board in place and Cwiek as the director. Now, the student board is nearly three times the size of the original. "In 1999, the original idea of the residential college was to have a way to help students adjust more successfully and stay on to finish a degree," said Cwiek. "Our program has evolved to help students not only come in and transition successfully, but also begin preparing to be competitive with graduate school programs in health care." Elliah Redden, Monroe sophomore and HPRC E-Board Scholarship Chair, said the program is unique because it works to get students involved in the community and prepare for the real world, while making connections with one another. • HEALTH PROFESSIONS | 7

"My favorite part of the HPRC is the welcoming community we have," Redden said. "It's pretty cool to be a member of the HPRC during this anniversary because this program has only gotten better throughout the years and I am able to make my own impact during its 20th year." The anniversary will bring together alumni and current students to network, share stories and

advice. Cwiek posted questions to an HPRC alumni Facebook group to get quotes, stories and life updates and worked with the Office of Alumni Relations to send invitations to 2,000 HPRC alumni. Shanna Britt, an HPRC alumnus who graduated in 2015, said the Residential College provided a supportive community where everyone celebrated each other's accomplishments.

Students unearth fake human remains at mock crime scene By Isaac Ritchey Senior Reporter news@cm-life.com

Yellow barricade tape lined the south lawn outside of Anspach Hall Oct. 4 where fake human remains were unearthed by Central Michigan University students wearing blue rubber gloves, shoe covers and dust masks. The amateur investigators were given about three hours to establish a perimeter, survey and document the scenes. The mock crime scenes were part of a midterm exam for 32 students in Anthropology 342: Principles of Forensic Anthropology. “Search and recovery lab” materials were buried in mulch for students to find. Students were expected to follow proper protocol as if the evidence would be pre-

sented in a court of law. Sociology and anthropology faculty member Catherine Willermet said students were graded individually by their mapping, photographs, record keeping and excavating and collectively by the eight groups’ effort and technique. After the exercise, students also wrote a conclusion about their findings. Marshall senior Jacob Lozon, an anthropology minor, said, for him, the most interesting and nerve-racking part of the hands-on lab is staying within proper protocol. “This is such a different experience than sitting at a desk and looking through documents,” Lozon said. Willermet began using mock crime scenes in 2007 at the University of Louisiana Monroe. She said it is important for students to not only learn forensics

but also how to apply the skills they have learned in a real-world scenario. “This is a really active exam that makes students problem-solve and show critical thinking,” Willermet said. About two-thirds of students in Willermet’s class are majors outside anthropology. Willermet thinks forensics is appealing to students because of the puzzles they are given to solve. However, she admits the course counts as a science class also. Officer Chris Pryor of the CMU Police Department visited the crime scenes. Pryor had a similar experience at Lake Superior State University, he said. “Students realize that a crime scene has a lot to work through. It’s not going to be solved in an hour like on TV,” Pryor said.

hen Marcie Otteman attended Central Michigan University’s Homecoming as a child she didn’t think she’d attend the university, let alone be a part of the homecoming coordination team. She graduated in 1987 as a fourth-generation CMU student. Otteman said hopes that her teenage daughter, Kaitlin, will soon become the fifth. Having worked in higher education for the last 26 years, Otteman previously worked in Metro Detroit at Davenport University and Lawrence Technological University. For the past 21 years Otteman has worked at CMU. During the past nine years she has served as CMU’s Executive Director for Alumni Relations. Otteman sat down with Central Michigan Life on Oct. 3 to discuss her Homecoming nightmare, her experiences as the Executive Director for Alumni Relations and what she hopes to see you wearing if you say hello to her this Saturday.

Q&A

The cool part about it for us is that it is a partnership with Student Activities and Involvement group. We work in conjunction with them, so it’s a full team effort. Cindy Jacobs, who is our associate director, is in charge of Alumni Village, so we organize that. We participate with the parade and work with SAI on that. We have our Grand Marshalls in the parade. We have our alumni board presidents in the parade. We are responsible for having the president in the parade. We host a 50-year reunion, where invite the class of 1969 and the whole decade. We have about 60 people coming to that breakfast and reunion on Homecoming morning. We do a lot of different things that are happening throughout Homecoming. There are a lot of people, a lot of moving parts. We have specialty events, for example our Latino Alumni Group is hosting a career meeting for their students the Friday of Homecoming. The African American Alumni Chapter has a whole weekend of events planned. We are the ones who are in the center who help organize and bring together all those activities.

| 9

What are experiences that alumni share? The No. 1 thing that alumni tell me is that CMU is like a family and they feel connected. That is by far the No. 1 thing I hear from people all the time. When we go places and we see other alums we yell “Fire Up Chips!” and no one else does that. Nobody is out there yelling “Go Broncos!” or “Go Eagles!” We always do. I was in an airport in the Vatican in Rome and someone from across the way when we were waiting to get in the elevator someone yelled “Fire Up Chips!” because we had CMU stuff on. That connectivity is the best. We have a different relationship than people who go to other institutions. I think that is one of the cool experiences about us.

What’s your biggest concern or fear leading up to the event? RAIN! Rain, rain, rain. It’s not on the radar right now, but it’s come out of nowhere before. My No. 1 fear is always precipitation – rain or snow – of any kind.

What nightmares do you have leading up to the event? None. It’s one of my most favorite days of the year. It’s like Christmas, I’m a kid waiting to wake up on Christmas morning. It’s just so much fun. It’s the best weekend. My only nightmare, knock on wood, is rain.

What is your favorite Homecoming tradition?

I have a yellow CMU rainsuit that I wear; it’s pretty spectacular. I’m hoping I don’t get to wear it this year, or if I’m wearing it’s only because it is 50 degrees and not because it is raining, because I need no rain at Homecoming this year. If it’s not raining, I can definitely wear some fun maroon and gold, like this new maroon fleece jacket that says Chippewas down the side and has a big Flying C.

OCT. 10, 2019

That’s so hard to guess. It just varies because there are so many activities. Some people come to the parade and Alumni Village, but maybe they don’t go to game. Others will go to Alumni Village and the game, but not the parade. It really depends, but literally thousands. Over 3,500 people will go through Alumni Village and we’ll have tens of thousands at the game. The hotels in town are all sold out and have been for three or four weeks.

What goes into organizing Homecoming?

What’s your go-to Homecoming outfit?

|

How many people attend Homecoming?

––––––––––––––––––––––––––

I can only pick one? Well there is nothing better than watching students race cardboard canoes across the pond when it’s snowing out. But really my favorite is everybody who comes back, so it’s seeing all the alumni. I’ve been walking across a parking lot or whatever and have seen people I haven’t seen in 20 or 30 years, so it’s those opportunities to reconnect again with people you haven’t seen in a long time. My favorite is everybody coming back, that would be my No. 1, and cardboard canoe races is a close second. It’s a really cool way to bring students and alumni together. That’s what I like best about it, the past and present all coming together.

CENTRAL MICHIGAN LIFE  |  CM-LIFE.COM

Marcie Otteman Homecoming is one of her favorite times of the year, but by Saturday night even she is ready for a break. Find out what she does to get ready for the big weekend. Courtney Pedersen ■ Staff Reporter

What’s the fun part of being in the middle of the Homecoming chaos? It’s super busy and I’m everywhere. It’s just go-go-go. I’m on for two days straight, and that’s fun, but by the time we hit Saturday night at about 8 p.m. I sort of just drop. It’s totally worth it, though. It’s great and just a fun, fun time.

What’s a fun memory you have with students during Homecoming? A few years ago, the Medallion Challenge had a clue up here by the Alumni House. Oh my gosh, we were just having so much fun that day. I’d look outside and see all these students outside look around and coming into the house. We went outside and helped them look around to try and find the clue. It was a ton of fun.

What are 3 things someone should bring to Homecoming? A positive attitude, a really big smile and their best maroon and gold clothes. They should be maroon and gold head to toe.

Legends of the Dark seeking volunteers By Makayla Coffee Staff Reporter news@cm-life.com

Legends of the Dark is seeking volunteers to fill a variety of positions for the spooky campus tour. The Office of Student Activities and Involvement (SAI) is hosting tours Oct. 28-30. Oct. 28 will be a family-friendly night without jump scares. The haunted campus tour activity must enlist the help of 400 volunteers. Positions such as tour guides, makeup designers, security guards, runners and scarers are needed. The majority of volunteers will be scarers. This role requires individuals to jump out and scare groups as they travel the route. Tour guides are responsible for telling stories about the legends of CMU, which involves memorizing a script. Auditions will take place for this role as sign-ups occur. Those in charge of makeup design are responsible for putting makeup on the scarers. Security guards must make sure groups stay on the paths during the tour. Runners are responsible for running small errands and getting anything someone may need during the event. To sign up, students can go to the Program Board page on Engage Central to fill out an

Master plan draft presented at planning commission meeting By Andrew Mullin Staff Reporter news@cm-life.com

Kris Landry

A draft of Mount Pleasant’s 2050 Master Plan was presented during the Oct. 3 Planning Commission meeting. The meeting took place in City Hall and the draft was presented by Paul Lippens from McKenna & Associates, who is the city’s project consultant. He briefly spoke about each part of the draft and how the ideas in it came to be. In April, the city and McKenna & Associates held a four-day event where members of the public came in to share their vision of the future, said Mount Peasant City Planner Jacob Kain. These helped sketch out ideas for the Master Plan. The Master Plan will be used as a guide for Mount Peasant to follow for things like transportation, parks and recreation, infrastructure and land use, according to the Master Plan website. The plan is expected to be adopted in 2020, according to a press release from the city. Lippens’ speech briefly went through each component of the draft, which is divided into five or six different books that can be found on the Master Plan website. He said these books are: • “Sustainable Land Use,” which maps out how land should be used in the future, encourage different kinds of housing and a

zoning plan. • “Connected Mobility Systems,” which discusses the transportation plan, re-routing M-20 and adding a series of roundabouts on Mission Street. • “Focused Redevelopment,” which discusses a civic center and connection of the downtown area and Central Michigan University. • “Exceptional Parks and Public Spaces,” which discusses the parks’ administrative structure and the inventory of the parks.

• “Innovative Services and Aspirations,” which discusses how the city can prioritize goals and aspirations. Some of the planning commissioners had some questions about the draft. Commissioner Corey Friedrich asked about the rerouting of M-20, which would no longer go through Mission and High Streets under the current draft. Instead, going east on M-20 would have drivers go north on Lincoln Road, then continue east on Pickard Street all the way through the city.

Lippens said this was done to bring High Street back to more of a neighborhood center and had a lot of support from people who attended the event back in April. Similarly, Kathy Rise wanted to know more about how Mission Street would change under the current draft. Lippens said Mission will be a two-lane corridor that has access control, on street parking, and frequent crossings. Mission will be like a Grand Boulevard, he said. William Dailey also asked how often ideas and projects under master plans tend to get implemented by the cities that approve them. Lippens and Kain said master plans rarely have every plan get implemented. However, Lippens said these plans are meant as a guide, and can change as the city progresses through the plan. Mount Pleasant has examples of things being built and implemented based on past master plans, including the city’s water plant, roadway extensions and town center changes. However, he said the M-20 re-route has been in past master plans but has yet to be implemented. While some big projects from past master plans may have not been implemented, he said changes do happen on a smaller level. “There’s many other smaller changes that have happened over time as a result of policy decisions the Master Plan has called for over the course of decades,” Kain said.

Athletics announces interior features of Champions Center By Evan Petzold Sports Editor sports@cm-life.com

An updated vision for the Chippewa Champions Center was released last week, and it includes the planned interior features for the $32.5 million building. “Facilities like the Chippewa Champions Center not only help us to develop the young men and women on our campus, but attract the next generation of student-leaders to CMU,” Central Michigan University President Robert Davies said in a press release. There was no announcement from CMU Athletics of the fact that the project was scaled back and redesigned after the cost was expected to go $7 million over budget. The building is dedicated to the student-athlete experience, CMU Athletics said. Of the 62,240-squarefoot structure, there will be a 7,000-square-foot human performance center for student-athletes.

An expanded sports medicine and rehabilitation facility with hydrotherapy pools are also set to be implemented for the players. Two pre- and post-workout nutrition stations will be accessible to all CMU athletes. There’s an expected auditorium and 7,100-square-feet of office and meeting space. CMU football’s locker room will occupy 4,200-squarefeet, along with an equipment, laundry and video operations room. “Building a facility like the Chippewa Champions Center is tangible proof to those parents and future Chippewas that CMU is serious about investing in developing student-athletes,” said first-year football coach Jim McElwain, who was the head coach at Florida from 2015-17. The center features two different options to watch football games. The Loge Boxes doubles as a traditional club area and private suite, allowing fans to watch from outside and

indoors. There are 16 Loge Boxes set to be implemented. The Isabella Bank Field Level Club, which will be located near the team’s locker room, features an indoor clubroom inside the Champions Center. However, the 4,000-squarefoot viewing spot also has an outdoor patio directly behind the north end zone. Fans can watch the game from either location. To bring the non-student-athlete experience into the building, CMU Athletics said the center will provide training opportunities for those enrolled in the College of Health Professions and College of Medicine. When CMU Athletics announced the original design for the Champions Center, it was a three-story project. Since then, the third-floor was removed because it would have gone over budget. The third floor was expected to hold offices for administrators in the Advancement Department, but that is no longer the case.

MEET THE 2019 CHIPPEWA HOMECOMING AMBASSADORS Registered Student Organizations nominate members to be ambassadors and Student Activities and Involvement chooses five candidates that best represent Central Michigan University’s core values. Connor Thatcher, Alpena senior “Homecoming has been a huge part of my experience here. It’s where I was finally able to break out of my shell and make some of my closest friends. It was a great way to get involved with campus and everything going on here, and it seemed like the perfect way to cap off everything I’ve done here.” Sydney Reed, Clinton Township senior “I’ve never really been involved with Homecoming before, so I was looking for an opportunity to represent the university. Also I’m the only ambassador of color so I was looking to represent my community on a larger scale and showcase the spirit and love and passion I have for CMU.” Hannah Fox, Grand Blanc senior “I see being Homecoming Ambassador as my chance to thank the people and organizations who have had a big influence on my life and I just want to uplift and recognize all the things they do.” Mary Miller, Imlay City senior “I’ve always really loved Homecoming and CMU, so representing the university and the Alternative Breaks program, who nominated me for this, has just been a really cool opportunity and I want to represent them in the best way I can.” Shannon Metzger, Cadillac junior “I wanted to be a Homecoming Ambassador to spread the message that involvement on campus is fun and to spread awareness about mental health and how to break down the stigma that surrounds this topic.”

ALUMNI

COME HOME

IT’S THE BIGGEST WEEKEND OF THE YEAR— CHIPPEWAS GATHER TOGETHER TO REFLECT, RECONNECT AND CELEBRATE CMU

I

t might be an understatement to say that Homecoming is a big deal for Office of Information Technology staff member Eric Bellmore. The 1996 graduate has celebrated the last 20 Homecomings tailgating with a growing group of alumni, friends, coworkers, students and family. “The maroon and gold is deep in our family,” Bellmore said. “Between my family, I had two cousins who went here in the 70s and 80s, I went here, my wife went here, my father-in-law graduated in ‘68 and now we have numerous cousins. (With) every generation, more people come.”

Bellmore’s Homecoming tailgate started small, but now draws around 30 people every year, complete with a menu based off of the opposing team’s local food. For students, Homecoming offers a week of festivities and energy. Events such as the Rock Rally, cardboard boat race and Battle of the Floats mark and generate excitement around the annual football game. However, for alumni, Homecoming literally means coming home — reconnecting with former classmates, professors, friends and memories.

HOMECOMING CONTINUED FROM 14 “The common thread for everybody who has gone to CMU and worked here is that we are family, and I always come back to that because it’s one of my favorite things to hear from incoming freshmen or folks who visit for Homecoming,” Bellmore said. “They know they can count on our hospitality and our people being open and welcoming.” Bellmore recalls Homecoming as “a blur” from his time as a student, and feels like he appreciates the comradery of Homecoming more as an alum

|

and staff member. “(As a student), you don’t look around and appreciate, that we have 25,000 people in one place right now for one reason,” he said. As graduate students, educational leadership faculty Eric Buschlen and management faculty Amy McGinnis did not participate much in Homecomings during their studies, focusing more on their research instead. Buschlen received his Master’s in 1999 and Doctorate in 2009, and McGinnis received her Doctorate from CMU in 2014. They earned their undergraduate degrees from different universities, but met through LeaderShape and married in an 11-minute ceremony at St. Mary’s University Parish on campus in 2003. Now, they spend their workdays a couple of miles away from

where they married, celebrating Homecoming as both alumni and faculty. “CMU is big enough to matter because it’s a big school with a lot of students, but it’s small enough to care,” McGinnis said. “I think that’s what you see in Homecoming a lot — at least from our experience and the activities we (take part in). We look for people we worked with, mentors, people who inspired us and former students. It’s that caring side, that connection that’s really important to us.” During Homecoming, Buschlen and McGinnis make sure to stop by the different college tents to interact with alumni from their former undergraduate schools. However, the cardboard boat race, tailgating and the football game have become integral parts of their family’s Homecoming experience. As faculty, Buschlen and McGinnis raised their children surrounded by college campus culture, but they noted their experiences as first-generation college students and having to create ties to the university. “Homecoming is the ultimate connection because you’re coming back as an alumni saying, ‘I found a connection at this institution, and I’m 48 years old and I’m still going to come back

C om e J oi nU s

because it’s Homecoming,’” Buschlen said. “When undergraduate students see that, it starts to build this ‘if they can do it, I can do it’ (mentality). Finding that connection (between the alumni and students) is what Homecoming exemplifies.” Homecoming has undergone a lot of changes since its first year in 1924. The event now highlights alumni and celebrates the familial connection that Bellmore, Buschlen and McGinnis all recognize as special to CMU. “My favorite thing to ask students why they are at CMU, and time and time again, they say it’s the people and the campus,” Bellmore said. “They tell me, ‘as soon as I step on campus, it feels like home.’ And when you come back as an alum, it still feels like home. That’s what I love to hear: as much change as we have on campus, we still have this home and family feel that I hope we always have. It’s what drew me here and it’s what keeps drawing people here.”

A HISTORY OF HOMECOMING In 1909, Baylor University hosted an organized event for alumni or “Home-Coming.” The event featured a varsity sports match, bonfire, parade, concert and pep rally. However, Baylor’s “Home-Coming” was isolated and not replicated until 1915. Within the same year, the University of Illinois claims to have hosted the first Homecoming in 1910. Despite the different claims, the first widely accepted Homecoming is recognized to be the University of Missouri’s 1911 football game, which ended in a 3-3 tie but was celebrated by 10,000 alumni. The attendance, parade and spirit rally inspired Homecoming celebrations throughout the country. 1924 - CMU student, Bourke “Dutch” Lodwyk, introduces Homecoming to administration. CMU’s first Homecoming started that year with a pep rally, bonfire and dance. A parade takes place the following day, and students “rush” past the ticket takers at the Broadway Theater to enjoy some free entertainment. 1925 - The first floats appear in the Homecoming parade. Prizes were awarded to the best float, but the parade had no unifying theme. 1934 - The CMU Fight Song, composed by student Howard “Howdy” Loomis, is played for the first time at the 1934 Homecoming. 1941 - Capitalizing on the new team name, the “Chippewas,” “Indian pageantry” was added to the event. 1943-1945 - No Homecoming is held because of World War II’s limitations on rail travel and the rationing of critical supplies such as gasoline. 1946 - Jean “Scotty” Chisholm is named the first Homecoming queen. 1952 - The Elvira Scratch gag first began, in which the Veterans’ Club not-so-serious Homecoming queen candidate rode on obscene floats during parades — all while sporting a tasteless dress, beard and notoriously hairy legs. 1960s-early 1970s - Homecoming traditions lose traction. Homecoming predominately becomes a “Greek event,” and loses the interest of students. Alumni start their own separate dance, the bonfire is banned by Mount Pleasant City ordinances and the pep rally’s attendance drops. Mid-1970s - The spirit of Homecoming is revived with an emphasis on alumni, and tailgate parties emerge in the late 1970s. 1982 - John Naderbecomes the first Homecoming king, 46 years after the induction of a Homecoming queen. 1988 - The cardboard boat race, in which engineering students build boats from cardboard and duct tape, is first completed. 1997 - “Campus royalty” is replaced with Homecoming ambassadors, who are selected on the basis of their service to the university and community. 2003 - The medallion hunt introduces an element of competition among residence halls. Homecoming is rooted in tradition, and although “tradition” establishes something as a custom, they evolve alongside a changing world. The history of Homecoming is one fraught with changes and innovations; at one point, Homecoming almost became a relic of the past.

CHIPS OFF THE OLD BLOCK With Homecoming 2019 right around the corner, Central Michigan Life took a flashback to years past. Like most things in the last 100 years, homecoming traditions have gone through quite the change. From carnivals and kissing booths, to parades and kings and queens, homecoming looks much different.

Homecoming queen Rowena Slavik, members of her court, and escorts are shown after officially “opening” the Ball in 1947.

The Homecoming Carnival is assembled on the south end of Lot 20 in 1971.

In 1954, Delta Sigma Epsilon’s “Fan for Central” took first-place honors in the “Most Beautiful” class. Central Michigan Life | File Photo President Charles Anspach crowns Sue Smith the Homecoming Queen of 1957.

RECENT HISTORY OF CMU FOOTBALL ON HOMECOMING With Saturday’s game approaching, we took at look at the team’s success on homecoming

By Austin Chastain Assistant Sports Editor sports@cm-life.com

From its first homecoming game in 1924 against Alma, Central Michigan has won 58 times, lost 17 times and had one tie, a 0-0 draw against Albion in 1925. There were three games, from 1943-45, where no contest was played due to World War II. CMU also won 18 straight games on homecoming starting in 1966 with a 20-6 win over Illinois State. The streak stretched all the way to 1982, a 42-18 win over Ohio. Through the years, Eastern Michigan has been the team the Chippewas have hosted the most on homecoming at 15 times, the first a 41-0 loss in 1926. The teams have not met on homecoming since 2011, a 35-28 Eagle victory. CMU has defeated EMU nine times when denoted as the homecoming game. As homecoming approaches, here is a closer look at the last decade of homecoming football games for Central Michigan.

OCT. 10, 2009: CMU 56, EMU 8 CMU had one of its best seasons in 2009 with its 12-2 record, undefeated league mark, Mid-American Conference championship and No. 23 ranking in the AP poll. Quarterback Dan LeFevour led the team to a MAC championship game win over Ohio and a GMAC Bowl victory over Troy and finished 12-2 overall and 8-0 in MAC play. The Chippewas welcomed the winless Eagles to Kelly/Shorts Stadium for homecoming and LeFevour left his mark. LeFevour opened the scoring with a 70-yard strike to Antonio Brown. Brown later scored another touchdown on a 75-yard punt return in the second quarter. On the other hand, LeFevour had three rushing touchdowns and two other passing scores. He finished 16 of 22 for 318 yards and three touchdowns. LeFevour also had 44 yards rushing. OCT. 16, 2010: MIAMI (OHIO) 27, CMU 20

Ryan Radcliff took over under center after LeFevour graduated and struggled in the homecoming game against the RedHawks.

He was 29 of 52 for 329 yards but threw three interceptions. However, CMU was in it until the end. While they never led, the Chippewas kept close to the visitors as they only trailed by as many as 10 points. Kicker David Harman kicked two field goals in the fourth quarter to tie the score at 20 apiece with just over four minutes to play. Looking for the win with 19 seconds to play, Zac Dysert found Andrew Cruse behind the Chippewa secondary and ran untouched for the 71-yard winning touchdown. The loss to the RedHawks spear-headed a four-game losing streak on homecoming for CMU. OCT. 15, 2011: EMU 35, CMU 28 Harman hit a 28-yard field goal to open the scoring, and that was the only time the Chippewas would lead, but the team was close throughout the game. The Chippewas scored 15 straight points in the fourth quarter capped with a passing touchdown from Radcliff to Jerry Harris. Radcliff found Titus Davis for the two-point conversion to tie

the game just over a minute to play. But EMU drove down the field in three plays and 64 yards. Alex Gillett found space and ran for a game-winning, 30-yard touchdown with 37 seconds to play. OCT. 20, 2012: BSU 41, CMU 30 Ben McCord caught a 22-yard pass from Radcliff that tied the score at 7-7 in the second quarter. However, the Cardinals pulled ahead and cruised to a victory and spoil the Chippewas’ homecoming celebrations. Quarterback Keith Wenning was 23 of 30 for 231 yards and three touchdowns against one interception. For CMU, Radcliff was 23 of 38 for 339 yards and three scores against one interception. OCT. 19, 2013: NIU 38, CMU 17 In the last of three straight losses on homecoming, Cooper Rush made his debut against • HISTORY OF CENTRAL | 23

the No. 23-ranked team in the country as the Huskies came to town. Rush was 16 of 32 for 271 yards and two touchdowns with an interception. NIU’s star quarterback Jordan Lynch was 20 of 30 for just 155 yards with a touchdown and an interception. However, Lynch’s running game was dominant for the undefeated Huskies. He led the team with 316 yards on the ground and scored three touchdowns. Running back Cameron Stingily ran for 70 yards and punched in a touchdown, as well. The visitors were able to amass 437 yards rushing compared to the Chippewas’ 75 yards on the ground. OCT. 4, 2014: CMU 28, OHIO 10 On a cold, windy and cloudy day in Mount Pleasant, the Chippewas hosted the Bobcats and started the scoring quickly. Rush hit Davis twice in the first quarter — from 4 yards and again from 32 – to bring the Chippewa lead to 14 through the first frame. CMU had a balanced attack on the offensive side of the ball with 467 yards in total. Running back Thomas Rawls had 229 yards rushing to lead the team to 234 total yards on the ground. In the passing game, Rush was 17 of 27 for 233 yards and allowed the Chippewas to cruise to a victory on homecoming — their first in four years. OCT. 3, 2015: CMU 29, NIU 19 For the second time in three years, the Chippewas hosted NIU for their homecoming game on a cold, windy and rainy day at Kelly/Shorts Stadium. CMU kicked a field goal in the first quarter whereas the Huskies scored 10 points. Neither team scored in the second quarter. Then, CMU registered itself on the scoreboard four times in the third. Jesse Kroll was on the receiving end from Rush to bring the score even at 10. Kicker Brian Eavey punched through a 28-yard field goal. Kroll hauled in another pass from Rush — a 23-yarder — then Jahray Hayes scored on the ground from 4 yards out. The Chippewas scored 23 points in the third frame while NIU only scored three and the offensive burst, fueled by turnovers, put the hosts ahead for good. Former coach John Bonamego was able to win his first homecoming game as the head man for his alma mater. OCT. 8, 2016: CMU 24, BALL STATE 21 The air was chilly, 52 degrees, windy but sunny in Mount Pleasant for homecoming. The Chippewas took care of business against Ball State. Cornerback Josh Cox intercepted Ball State’s Riley Neal and returned it for a touchdown from 33 yards out. The turnover, the second interception Neal threw, put the Chippewas ahead by 10 in the beginning stages of the fourth quarter, 24-14.

Cardinal running back James Gilbert capped off a six play, 75-yard drive just two minutes later to cut the CMU lead to three points. Neither team would score again and the Chippewas won their third straight homecoming game, but have not won since. OCT. 14, 2017: TOLEDO 30, CMU 10 Rain fell sideways on another cold and windy day at Kelly/Shorts Stadium. Toledo came into Mount Pleasant and extended its win streak over CMU to eight straight. Running back Terry Swanson scored two rushing touchdowns in the first half — from 48 and 22 yards — and Jameson Vest added a field goal in the second quarter to give the Rockets a 17-0 lead at halftime. Toledo picked up two rushing touchdowns in the fourth quarter — a 5-yard score from Logan Woodside and an 8-yarder from Shakif Seymour. Quarterback Shane Morris found Tyler Conklin for a 26-yard passing score with just over a minute to play. Toledo outgained CMU in the rushing game, 322-69, led by Swanson’s 145 yards and two touchdowns. OCT. 6, 2018: BUFFALO 34, CMU 24 Another cloudy day turned to rain, the eventual MAC East Division champ, Buffalo, came to town with the hopes to spoil homecoming for a 1-4 Chippewa squad. The Bulls succeeded. Kicker Ryan Tice booted a 40-yard field goal to put his team in front before Buffalo scored 17 straight points with a 6-yard passing score and 5-yard rushing score from Tyree Jackson and a field goal from Adam Mitcheson. CMU cut the lead down to seven points on two occasions in the third quarter with a 10-yard run from running back Romello Ross and a 23-yard pass from quarterback Tommy Lazzaro to JaCorey Sullivan. After the Ross score, Kevin Marks put Buffalo back ahead by 14 with a 70-yard run on the first ensuing play from scrimmage. In the fourth quarter, the Bulls scored 10 more points before Tony Poljan found Julian Hicks for 9 yards with just over a minute to play in the game. It was not enough. OCT. 12, 2019: CMU VS. NMSU Central Michigan and New Mexico State have never met, in fact, the Aggies have never played a game in Michigan. However, NMSU has played a team from Michigan — 1962 against Detroit Mercy in Las Cruces, New Mexico. The 2019 Aggie squad, is currently ranked 130 in The Athletic 130 as they are 0-6 with losses to Washington State, Alabama, San Diego State, New Mexico, Fresno State and Liberty. The Chippewas and Aggies are set to square off at 3 p.m. Oct. 12 in Kelly/Shorts Stadium.

WAYS Isaac Ritchey | Senior Reporter Offensive lineman Luke Goedeke lifts running back Johnathan Ward in celebration Oct. 5 at the Eastern Michigan football game.

CMU football welcomes New Mexico State for homecoming By Austin Chastain Assistant Sports Editor Sports@cm-life.com

Central Michigan needed to bounce back against Eastern Michigan to put the team back on the rails. Jim McElwain and the Chippewas did just that with a commanding 42-16 win over the Eagles and move their record to 3-3 and 2-1 in Mid-American Conference play. Now, CMU welcomes New Mexico State to Mount Pleasant for its homecoming game and

the last of a two-game homestand. However, quarterback David Moore will not play as he was suspended after testing positive for a banned substance. Senior graduate transfer Quinten Dormady is slated to start for CMU after returning from a knee injury suffered against Wisconsin. The Aggies have struggled mightily this season as they are 0-6 on the season. They opened the season with road losses to Washington State and Alabama before playing at home against San Diego State, another loss. NMSU lost to rival New Mexico on the road before losing home games to Fresno State and Liberty. In the rankings from The Athletic, NMSU ranks 130th out of 130 teams in the Football Bowl Subdivision. The Aggies score 18.17 points per game and allow a staggering 42.67 points per game. For comparison, Central Michigan checks in at No. 89 in the same rankings. Running back Jason Huntley averages just 62.50 yards per game for NMSU and has three touchdowns on the year in his six

appearances. Josh Adkins carries the offense under center. He could be considered a dual threat quarterback as he is 149 of 236 passing for 1,475 yards and six touchdowns against 11 interceptions. He averages 245.83 yards per game through the air. On the ground, Adkins has gained just 19 yards but has scored four times. The Aggies struggle on both sides of the ball. Defensively, they rank 122nd in the FBS in yards allowed with 489.3 per game. Their scoring defense ranks 129th in the FBS, tied with Massachusetts. CMU ranks 101 with an average allowance of 30.80 points per game. “You have to look at them as another team and you have to prepare for them the best you can,” senior center Steve Eipper said about not looking past anyone on the schedule. “You can’t get caught up in their record, they’ve played some tough opponents.” The key for the Chippewas will be to piece together two strong performances following their huge win over the Eagles last week.

CMU totaled 587 yards offensively last week and had a number of explosive plays, three of which went for touchdowns over 60 yards in length. They have not won back-to-back games since the 2017 season when they won five in a row to close out the regular season. “We haven’t done a good job of that (in the past),” McElwain said. “It’s important for us to not look down the road, we know what we can do and now let’s go execute it — that’s the important piece.” But given how the Chippewas’ schedule lays out, they have a nonconference game against a lowly opponent in the middle of their MidAmerican Conference schedule. While no game ever comes easy, some could see that CMU’s next game might be a deep breath before the brunt of conference play. “It’s a home game and we have to defend the crib,” senior linebacker Michael Oliver said. “We don’t take anyone lightly.” The Chippewas and Aggies square off at 3 p.m. Saturday in Kelly/Shorts Stadium.

Savannah Glasscock | Staff Photographer Junior setter Grace Butler sets the ball for her teammate in McGuirk Arena Saturday, Oct. 5.

Central Michigan’s volleyball team is good. Really good. The Chippewas have won nine straight games, control an overall record of 14-2, and are unbeaten in their first four Mid-American Conference games. Winning the MAC title has entered the conversation, as it’s becoming more and more of a possibility with each win. Not to mention the team has had a player win a conference award nearly every week. And in those awards last week, CMU swept the honors for the MAC West Division’s Offensive Player, Defensive Player and Setter of the Week. I have the pleasure of covering this team. I’ve gotten to watch their home contests and have weekly visits to practice. In the small amount of time I have gotten to see them in practice, it’s easy to tell how hard this team works. They work hard every day to produce the results on game days. Unfortunately, when I look around at the crowd in McGuirk Arena, it’s close to empty. The crowd is mostly filled with parents, community members and just a few students. As students, I know we have a lot of commitments, and it’s often easy to skip these events, especially when it’s a sport you’re not as familiar with. But this team is too good and they work too hard for students to completely ignore that success. We’re fortunate enough to be able to attend sporting events for no cost at the time of the game. (Yes, I know we pay the cost up front in tuition.) Regardless, I encourage you to give this team

a chance. Come out and support them. I think you’ll be impressed. Show up to watch Kalina Smith spike the ball with incredible force. Show up to see Megan Kern seemingly get to any ball hit to her side of the net. Show up to see the passion Savannah Thompson displays on the court. Show up to see so many others I could mention here, as well. Show up to watch a team that is so deep with talent, any member of the roster could be named as MAC Player of the Week and few would be surprised. Show up for the bench mob celebrations or for the intense pre-game hype video. Show up to McGuirk and provide this team with the home court advantage fitting of the top team in the MAC West. Show up to support these student-athletes and their coaching staff that put in countless hours of work throughout the week. This is the team that beat rival Western Michigan. Central Michigan is a team that plays with fire and swagger.

n 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 11 against Ball State n 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12 against Toledo n 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18 against Bowling Green That’s not to ignore the recent success by the football team or how effective soccer has been. Support those teams as well, but this volleyball team is damn good. This Friday, the volleyball team takes on Ball State at home. The Cardinals are currently in second place in the MAC West. This clash figures to be not only a close match but an important one. I believe students should pack McGuirk and make the place feel like a true home game and make it a tough place for opposing teams to play. Head coach Mike Gawlik has slowly built this team up over his four seasons in charge. The team is just hitting peak form. Gawlik, his staff and these players have done everything they can to prove they’re a team worth watching. They shouldn’t need to recruit students outside of the Bovee University Center to attend games. When I saw that occur last week, I was shocked. They’ve done their part; they‘ve won games. Now, as students, it’s time to do our part. You don’t need to be an expert in volleyball to recognize the way this team plays is fun to watch. You won’t want to miss what they do for the rest of this season.

LIFE IN BRIEF

Central Michigan soccer rebounded from its first loss of the season with a convincing win Oct. 6 over Northern Illinois. The Chippewas defeated the Huskies, 2-0, at the CMU Soccer Complex in Mid-American Conference play. CMU will play Bowling Green on Oct. 10 in Bowling Green, Ohio. BGSU is currently first place in the MAC, but with a win, the Chippewas would move ahead of the Falcons in the MAC standings. Senior midfielder Marle Bringard opened the scoring when she scored her fourth goal of the season. Bringard, who had six goals in her career prior to this season, has been in peak form at the beginning of the season for CMU. Coach Jeremy Groves started Bringard more in a forward position against Northern Illinois, hoping she would be able to create more chances. “In terms of what we do in training,” Groves said about Bringard, “putting her around goal and pushing her a little bit, having a standard and she’s rose to it so far. She’s been great.” The change in positioning is something that

SOCCER REBOUNDS FROM FIRST LOSS WITH SHUTOUT AGAINST NORTHERN ILLINOIS, IMPROVES TO SIX WINS

For the third straight week, Central Michigan volleyball was represented among the best in the Mid-American Conference. Megan Kern has won her third straight MAC Defensive Player of the Week award. The senior libero from Illinois had 42 digs in wins over Eastern Michigan and Kent State over the weekend for the Chippewas. On the season, she now has 301 digs. “Megan’s consistency is something that we rely on quite a bit,” said head coach Mike Gawlik. “Her ability to influence the game as a defender and passer is huge for our success.” Against EMU, Kern posted 16 digs. Additionally, she had four assists and posted her first kill of the season. It was more of the same defensively against Kent State as she contributed 26 digs in a four set victory. With the two wins, the Chippewas extended their win streak to nine games, pushing their record to 14-2 and 4-0 in MAC play. They next take the court at 6 p.m. Oct. 11 against Ball State in McGuirk Arena. -Christian Booher, Staff Reporter

could stick for the Chippewas as the season continues with Bringard having scored the most goals on the team. “We put her up front today, she’s dangerous.” Groves said. “She gets the ball down; she creates stuff; she’s a handful going forward.” Zoie Reed played great again in goal for CMU, earning her fourth shutout of the season. She made two saves in each half, with the first half presenting more challenges. The senior said she does what she needs to do in order to win and does not worry about her individual numbers. “I don’t look at stats that often,” Reed said about her four shutouts. “I’m just trying to help my teammates win. Honestly it’s the soldiers in front of me that really help bring this team together. I just try to do my job and do it to the best of my abilities.” Juniors Natalie Belsito and Amanda Britain each did a good job of getting back on defense and cutting off scoring opportunities before they threatened Reed. After the game, Reed addressed how important those two have been so far this season.

“They’ve done a phenomenal job in the past few games, they’ve really helped this team grow,” Reed said. “They have absolutely done a phenomenal job, just doing what they have to do to make this team win.” The second goal of the day was scored by freshman forward Cami Taylor, her second of the season. Freshman forward Lauren DeBeau had three shots, two of which were on goal, against the Huskies while playing with a leg injury. DeBeau has scored one goal so far this season, but she ranks near the top of the team in shots. After the game, Groves said that she just needs to keep working on it in training and getting used to it, noting that experience could play a factor. “One way of looking at it is she’s putting herself in the position to have those opportunities,” Groves said. -Andrew Loveland, Staff Reporter

Don’t play games with our money. $225 per semester student services fee a public relations debacle; CMU must do better. We recently published a story that finally shed some light on the university’s misleading $225-per-semester student services fee. The fee was approved by the board of trustees June 2018, instead of a tuition rate increase. Our story highlighted how the university spends those dollars, how “student services” are defined and how students feel after paying it and never receiving a clear explanation of what the fee money funds. In short, students told us they felt ripped off. One student even described feeling like a “cash cow” for the university. Every student that was interviewed had no clear understanding of what “student services” were being supported. It turns out it wasn’t difficult to find out how the money was being used. After Central Michigan Life asked, we eventually got some answers. But, that’s the thing. We had to ask what our money was being used for at a public university. Why did the university feel no obligation to properly inform its students about the fee? Why were students the ones responsible for providing other students with that basic information? Withholding this kind of information, whether intentional or not, is unacceptable. More than a year later, we are still waiting for a statement, crafted by University Communications, to tell us where our own money is going. The implementation of this fee should have gone a lot smoother. We hope administrators learn from this public relations failure. The board of trustees and the president of the university, George Ross, should have been able to explain why the fee was necessary and what the money was being used for before trustees voted to approve it. Students were left without an explanation, but were charged the fee three months later just as a new president arrived. Before, and just after, instituting the fee, it was promoted by administrators as a source of funding for actual student services such as additional counseling and academic advising. However, we now know the fee is used for

funding basic personnel and operating costs. The fee does pay for some additional counseling and academic advising staff. But, it also pays for a bunch of other stuff – including faculty salaries – that tuition is typically used to fund. Students deserve transparency from their university. By introducing a new fee and not clearly explaining to students what they are being charged for, CMU is failing us at the most basic level. Many of us are willingly going into student loan debt to attend this university, so not clearly and truthfully explaining where our money is going is just dishonest and disappointing. Students are well aware of the financial and enrollment crises that a directional university in the Midwest is facing. We don’t like it, but we understand that you need more money from us. Why muddy the issue? The meeting this fee was approved was heralded as a great achievement for students because the undergraduate tuition rate didn’t increase. Did you think we wouldn’t notice or understand that the fee took money from us in a different way? In fact, the student services fee is actually equal to the largest tuition rate increase since the 2012-13 school year. Based on a 15 credit hour schedule, the $225 fee is equal to a $15 increase per credit hour, making it the highest cost of attendance increase since 2012-2013. The difference is, we will be paying this fee every semester. Just be honest with us. By misleading students and failing to provide information beforehand, CMU has damaged the trust between it and its students. With homecoming approaching, we urge the administration to consider that the students of today are the alumni of tomorrow. After graduation, we know to expect that phone call asking for a donation. Some will look back on the tone that was set during their time in school and ask themselves: Why should I support CMU? Do I trust them with my money? You might not like the answer we give you.

Standing for sustainability on CMU’s campus With the threats of climate change becoming more and more apparent, the discussion around sustainability has become even more prevalent. More people are looking toward reusable products, changing their eating habits and making other lifestyle choices to try to lower the impact of their carbon footprint. At Central Michigan University, there has been a decrease in the amount of waste going to landfills. The annual Municipal Solid Waste Report found in 2016, 1891.58 tons of waste went to the landfill from CMU’s campus. Last year, that number had decreased 1545.73 tons going to the landfill. That is a 19 percent decrease in waste overall going to the landfill. A large portion of that percentage is due to the increase in students recycling and turning to reusable products. While CMU has been able to decrease the amount of waste it sends to the landfill, the waste audit Wednesday, Oct. 3 found there is still a large room for improvement. A waste audit is a process that is used on campus to determine the amount and type of waste that we as a university generate. The most recent waste audit of the Ronan Hall trash reciprocals found that 69.2 percent of the waste found within the recipro-

Katie Prebelich Guest Columnist

cals could have been recycled, composted or donated in another way. As students, we can and we must do better. Taking the extra time to ensure as little trash as possible ends up in landfills is something we must prioritize as a campus. “Recycling on campus can be easy if you are willing to learn and take the time to do so,” said Student Government Association Sustainability Chair Kalli Walz. “This includes taking your time washing out your coffee cups before recycling them and making sure that each part of the cup goes into their correct recycle bin. It may also include you bring reusable straws or bags on campus instead of using plastic alternatives. If students do more of these, it will help reduce the lost recycling percentage on campus.” Reduce, reuse, recycle. If we as students placed this initiative

as a top priority, we could lower the tons of waste going to landfills unnecessarily. For more about where and what can be recycled on campus,

go to CMU’s recycling webpage. There will be another waste audit on Monday, Oct. 21 from 2-3 p.m. at the corner of Preston and Washington. Project Recycling will take place on Oct. 30 from 1:30-3:30 p.m. in the Park Library. This event will have free utensils and educational information for all students. SGA is having a bonfire fundraiser for the Student Food Pantry at Papa’s Pumpkin Patch on Oct. 18 starting at 6 p.m. All are welcome to come. For more information about these events, SGA or anything mentioned please contact SGA Press Secretary Katie Prebelich at prebe1k@cmich.edu.

President Davies: Welcome home CMU alumni TO OUR ALUMNI: Meeting with and hearing from alumni are among my favorite parts of being Central Michigan University’s president. I’ve met them here on our campus when they come to speak in classrooms, recruit students for internships and even as they accompany their children on campus admissions tours. We cheer on CMU’s student-athletes together in stadiums around the country, and exchange enthusiastic greetings of “Fire Up Chips!” in cities and airports around the world. Conversations with our alumni uplift and inspire me. They tell me how proud they are to be CMU Chippewas. We talk about their years on campus and the friends and mentors who have followed them throughout their lives. They tell me about their educational and career journeys and the satisfaction they have found being leaders in their professions and in their communities. Most of all, they tell me how Central still
