Here are the most important stories we covered in 2019
By Staff Reports news@cm-life.com
As the decade came to a end, so did a lot of issues at Central Michigan University. During 2019, we saw the end to two court cases that hit close to home. James Eric Davis Jr. pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity in the March 2, 2018 killing of his parents in his dorm room on the fourth floor of Campbell Hall. Two sexual assault cases involving former Student Government Association President Ian Elliott, were resolved after he pleaded no contest to one
charge of third•degree criminal sexual conduct. He was sentenced to a year in prison and must register as a sex offender for the rest of his life. We also said goodbye to two legendary CMU coaches. This summer, Margo Jonker announced her retirement from a 40•year career as CMU’s softball coach. Women’s basketball head coach Sue Guevara passed the ball to her assistant of nine years, Heather Oesterle, who took over the team in July. Students and alumni also said goodbye to the beloved Barnes Hall, which was demolished after the school year ended this May. The old• REVIEW | 4-5

est•standing residence hall on campus opened in 1939 as the first all•male dorm at CMU. It housed Navy cadets during World War II, and was home to the Department of Music for a brief period in the 70s. Although the steel and cement is gone, the fond memories from the last 80 years will stay with the thousands of students and alumni who called Barnes their home. So, as 2019 ends, read about not only what ended this year, but also everything that began and will follow us into a new decade. JANUARY • Local favorite Mexican restaurant La Señorita suddenly closed its doors after 33 years in the community. It left about 40 employees without a job with no warning. • President Bob Davies appoints a Title IX Advisory Board on Jan. 10 in wake of awareness around sexual assault becoming more prominent on campus. The board was meant to provide advice on a range of issues including training, education, support services and resources. • CMU alumnus William Joseph was chosen as Mount Pleasant’s mayor following a 4•3 vote win over Tony Kulick on Jan. 7. • Since Fall 2010, university enrollment has decreased by 23 percent. A report of CMU’s Fall 2018 enrollment numbers, which was released Jan. 17, showed a 7.4 percent decrease from Fall 2017. • Campbell Hall shooting suspect James Eric Davis Jr. pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity plea to homicide and gun charges at his court hearing Jan. 25. Davis Jr. was charged with killing his parents on March 2, 2018 in his dorm room the day before spring break. The shooting resulted in a campus•wide lockdown and a

Davis’ family released a statement after the hearing. “We are highly satisfied with the outcome of this hearing,” the statement read. “Mental health is real and we know that (James) Eric (Davis) was not in a right state of mind. We appreciate the love and support offered to us by the CMU community, Center of Forensic Psychiatry and Eric’s attorney, Josh Blanchard.” • Siblings Weekend 2019 saw nearly 1,000 participants Jan. 25•26. Roughly 700 people attended the pancake breakfast on the second and final day of the weekend. • Central Michigan University closed due to inclement weather three times in the same week in the last week of January. From 2013 to 2017, the university only closed four times total. FEBRUARY • On Feb. 7, CMUPD Chief William Yeagley announced his retirement at the end of the school year. He served as the chief of CMU police since 2019. • CM Life wins 26 awards at the Michigan Press Association. The awards were received at the annual convention on Feb. 1. First place awards went to photographers, reporters and designers. • Documents reveal more allegations of sexual assault and drugging in Ian Elliott court case on Feb. 11. This was Elliott’s second set of sexual assault accusations. • Elliott’s sexual assault case was bound over to Isabella County Circuit Court on Feb. 12 for a preliminary hearing. Elliott was charged with two counts of third•degree criminal sexual conduct and one count of assault with intent to commit sexual penetration. He was accused of sexually assaulting Rachel Wilson on Aug. 31, 2016 after meeting her at The Cabin. During the preliminary hearing, three more women came forward as witnesses, describing their experiences with Elliott that involved violence, drugging and sexual assault. One of those women, Landrea Blackmore, filed her own case against Elliott a month later. He was charged with one count of criminal sexual conduct of
the third degree (oral penetration). • Community members raise more than $65,000 for Special Olympics at the Polar Plunge on Saturday, Feb. 16. It’s an annual event that brought in 250 plungers and even more spectators to watch. • It is announced that CMU’s “Fire Up for Excellence” capital campaign has raised $101,654,498 at a Board of Trustees meeting Feb. 14. The campaign was launched in Fall 2018, and exceeded its goal in months. • Gymnastics head coach Jerry Reighard was placed on administrative leave pending an internal investigation on Feb. 21. MARCH • Women’s basketball senior forward Reyna Frost becomes the third CMU player to ever be named Mid-American Conference Player of the Year on March 14. Head coach Sue Guevara was also named MAC Coach of the Year. • St. Patrick’s Day 2019 was one of the slowest ever for the Central Michigan University Police Department. CMU police issued one MIP, one disorderly conduct and received one report of criminal sexual assault. • It is revealed on March 28 that the university was investigating Jerry Reighard for engaging in athlete misconduct. A gymnast reported that Reighard told her to provide false information to medical staff to compete. It was not the first time Reighard was questioned about his ethical conduct regarding student•athletes, either. • About 1,500 people attended the 3OH!3 concert on March 29 in McGuirk Arena. The show was the annual Spring Concert organized by Program Board. APRIL • CM Life published Jerry Reighard’s personnel file obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request April 1. New dance major expands horizons for dancers DEC. 5, 2019
By Justin Cooper Staff Reporter news@cm-life.com
Dance students at Central Michigan University will find a new door open to them next fall — for the first time, the university will offer a major in Dance Studies. After two years of wriggling through the editing process, the major was approved by the Academic Senate on Oct. 8. Previously a dance curriculum had only been offered as a minor. According to CMU’s website, the dance minor “complements” other performance majors, such as theatre, music, music theatre and teaching. The major expands the curriculum by nine classes to include an internship, a senior capstone, a writing class, a class on teaching dance and higher levels of jazz and ballet dancing. The new major would be introduced as two opposing forces tug at each other. The newly-independent Department of Theatre and Dance is attempting to forge an identity that will draw greater numbers of performance students, while a statewide dip in college enrollment and funding

has seen CMU’s student body dwindle by as much as 7 percent and has shown little to no sign of reversing course. The major approved by the Academic Senate asserts that no additional faculty would be needed, describes the major as an “inexpensive program,” and says that existing classrooms are “adequate.” All dance
faculty approached to discuss the Dance Studies major declined to comment, citing remaining steps in the approval process. Students pursuing the Dance Studies major will be required to minor in either business or entrepreneurship. A minor in business or entrepreneurship may be helpful to graduates

who go on to start their own dance studios, as CMU ballet instructor Andrea Purrenhage recently did. With her Mount Pleasant School of Dance, Purrenhage became a first-time business owner. However, her lack of business experience or education hasn’t seemed to weigh her down. The only stumbling block that
came to her mind was when she received a call from a music licensor who informed her of the proper way to license the music she plays during her classes. Dance is what they want to do for the rest of their life,” said Midland sophomore Emilie Rohn, who is pursuing the dance minor. Rohn is majoring in exercise science and hopes to be able to combine her dance education with a career in the health professions. She believes she’ll still benefit from the implementation of the Dance Studies major, however, because the new classes will be available to students pursuing the minor as well. Toledo, Ohio junior Cassandra Scouten was majoring in women and gender studies before the Dance Studies major was approved, and now she’s changed her plans. Switching her major means she’s going to have to stay longer than four years, but to her, it’s worth it. “I plan on switching to the dance major because dance is what feeds my soul,” Scouten said. “It provides an outlet for creativity. I have to move, I could never, ever work at a desk.”

orenz is a Central Michigan University alumnus who has participated in and won both Make-A-Pitch and New Venture Competition. She went on to create Un-Cork in 2013, a business offering more sustainable corks with better permeability and elasticity using a mixture of synthetic and oak corks. After, Lorenz created Cultured Kombucha Company in 2015, a fermented tea brewery established in Traverse City with a focus on health and wellness. The Ticker, a Traverse City newspaper, awarded Lorenz with two “40 Under 40” awards, and she is a Certified Culinarian for the American Culinary Federation and Great Lakes Culinary Institute’s Alumni of 2019. She was also a finalist for Traverse City Chamber’s Hagerty Small Business of the Year award. Lorenz was invited to return to CMU to judge for the first time in the Make-A-Pitch competition after judging at New Venture Competition for three years. The experienced entrepreneur spoke with CM Life about her experience with Make-APitch and New Venture Competition and her most awarded business.

What was it like pitching your project? When I was a student at Central, we participated in the New Venture Competition. It was our second or third year of doing the competition, so we were invited to the Make-A-Pitch… we were actually the first team to pitch in the Make-A-Pitch competition to win and also win the full New Venture Competition. As a team, it was really interesting for us to kind of diversify our resources, decide who would be a good presenter who would really try to emotionally connect with the judges. That’s what started Un-Cork.
What’s it like coming back to CMU as a judge? This will be my third time coming back and it’s been a

different experience each time. I really enjoy giving the students a well-rounded perspective. Being a student that was competing and coming back as a judge has allowed me to see the feedback I was receiving, but also see the feedback I’m giving them to be as direct and helpful as possible.
Did you ever expect to be successful and to come back as a judge? We went through a mindset that it was a really great learning opportunity and that we had a fantastic product that we were excited to share with the community, and by having that authenticity and brand, we had that much more power to really convey what we wanted to accomplish. I think the judges understood that ... and saw our passion while we were pitching, and that was what really helped us round out and win the competition.
How did Cultured Kombucha get launched? I had an interest in nutrition and wellness, and after working in the culinary industry and having experience with wine … and how food interacts with your body … we were able to finance a spin-off of Un-Cork with Cultured Kombucha. We’ve been out in the community to help them understand health and wellness in the product, so leading Cultured has been able to communicate how food can be a functional aspect in your everyday life. I think all of the experiences have kind of tied together in helping to make Cultured succeed. I don’t think I would have the same perspective on Cultured had I not experienced Un-Cork.
Courtney Lorenz From student to successful business owner to Make-A-Pitch judge, Courtney Lorenz tells her story. Benjamin Jodway ■ Staff Reporter
What was the most valuable thing you learned from competing? The most valuable thing I learned from competing was probably learning from New Venture and the confidence that comes from that. When you’re able to get up there to pitch a product, you’re passionate about it and you truly believe in what you’re pitching, the confidence you can experience in yourself is fairly undeniable. It gives you a powerful position. When you take that, you can connect with judges and make an opportunity with New Venture. The reality of it is that if you win and you really do start up a thing, it can’t just be about luck or winning a competition. You have to have the background and the passion behind it to really be able to make it great. Some days are challenging, and the passion pushes you through those days that are really hectic.

A state-wide alliance of student governments is forming to demand Michigan fund its colleges and universities more generously, and Central Michigan University’s Student Government Association is likely to be part of it. The Student Coalition for Higher Education Funding (SCHEF) was created during the United Student Governments Conference at Saginaw Valley State University Nov. 9. At the conference, which happens every semester, delegates from SGA joined their counterparts from Michigan’s 14 other public universities coordinate unified responses to issues students are facing across the state. CMU was one of 12 universities that voted to establish the coalition. Lake Superior State University voted against it and Oakland University abstained. No specific data is cited in the resolution establishing SCHEF, but it demands “more appropriate” higher education funding from the state so schools can “function without draining the limited financial resources of Michigan students.” CMU received just over $89.2 million from Michigan this year, 2.1 percent more funding than last year. That money from the state accounted for nearly 19 percent of CMU’s budget this year. In September, Michigan passed a budget,
which increased higher education spending by .9 percent, less than the projected rate of inflation. With state money flatlining and tuition dollars evaporating as enrollment nosedives, someone has to start putting up more money, SCHEF argues. In their view, it ought to be the state. The coalition is composed of one or two representatives from each participating school, and will meet in-person once per year and monthly electronically. Each school that votes to ratify its membership in SCHEF will be required to establish either a position or entire task force pertaining to higher education funding. SCHEF will elect a member to serve as its chair, or leader, each semester. For fall 2019, though, Samantha Uptmor, director of foreign outreach in University of Michigan-Flint’s student government, and Joel Pagel, vice president of external relations in Grand Valley State University’s student senate, are to serve as interim co-chairs. The interim co-chairs were just one of the reasons Lake Superior State University’s delegates chose to vote ‘no’ on SCHEF. The co-chairs were not chosen by vote – they volunteered and were written into the resolution itself, meaning a vote for SCHEF was a vote for Uptmor and Pagel. “This and other statements made in the resolution show a lack of accountability for w COALITION | 10-11

SCHEF in how they will operate and what authority they will have,” said Patricia Guild, vice president of activities and public relations in LSSU’s student government. Oakland University’s delegation abstained from voting on the resolution. OU student body president Destinee Rule said she would have liked the resolution to recognize the “uneven playing field” in per-student funding, of which OU receives the lowest: $2,975 per student. Rule also said the resolution, which calls for “continuing” lobbying for higher funding, should have better recognized that some universities are starting from virtually nothing. “Other public universities are not yet educated enough on the necessary strategies to properly advocate for more funding. It is important to recognize that every university is in different stages,” she said. “[G]iven our knowledge of state funding, our delegation was not yet equipped with the knowledge to offer realistic and credible solutions. A survey was sent out to participating universities to gather thoughts about how the coalition should function ahead of its still-unscheduled first meeting, where a constitution will be drafted. After an internal investigation of former Assistant Attorney General Brian Kolodziej, Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced she will concur with a defense motion to set aside Ian Elliott’s plea agreement in a sexual assault case. After the motion is filed, it is up to the judge to decide whether Elliott’s plea agreement will be set aside, according to AG Communications Director Kelly Rossman-McKinney. The case will not be dismissed, she said. Elliott pleaded no contest to one count of third-degree Criminal Sexual Conduct in the Isabella County Trial Court on Aug. 2. He was sentenced to a minimum of 366 days in prison, which he is currently serving in the St. Louis Correctional Facility. “In the end, today does not reflect the truthfulness of the victims in these cases but rather the consequence of a prosecutor who failed in his sacred duty to properly administer justice in our legal system,” Nessel said in a press release. “A

prosecutor has the solemn responsibility to vindicate the rights of the victim while ensuring that those accused of a crime are given a fair trial. These two things are inextricably intertwined and sacrificing the latter to advance the interests of the former – in the end – defeats both. “I hope that my actions here today are not viewed as a failure of our criminal justice system but – instead – a reflection of my commitment to the fundamental principles upon which it is based.” Kolodziej resigned in September after it was discovered that he had an inappropriate relationship with a victim in Elliott’s criminal sexual assault case. He was the lead prosecutor. The investigation into Kolodziej took nearly two months, according to the press release. “From my perspective, (Nessel’s statement is) a good start,” Elliott’s defense attorney Joe Barberi said. -Dylan Goetz, Editor-in-Chief
coalition is still being discussed. “We’re waiting to get more information about potential bylaws and the workings of SCHEF,” SGA President Jake Hendricks said. “We want to gather more information on how it would function and when the meetings will be before we make a decision on it.” A copy of the resolution was sent to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist, the Michigan Senate and House Appropriations Subcommittees on Higher Education, each member of the state legislature with a public university in their district and the presidents of each university present at the conference. Other legislation at the conference CMU’s delegation abstained from voting on a resolution requiring Michigan’s public universities to establish a meal swipe donation program. Meal swipe donation subsequently became a controversy on campus when a student on Twitter mentioned a $25 fine for students who loan their cards for other students to eat with. The resolution presented at the conference encouraged student governments to work toward a system where unused meal swipes could be donated to campus food pantries. “[T]he reason for the abstention was specifically a lack of research on the piece of legislation,” Hendricks said. “Additionally, the Residence Housing Association on campus is currently undertaking efforts to provide an affordable meal program.”

Zoology collection enhances classroom experience, research opportunities
K
eys jingle as collections manager Ron Bloomfield digs them out of his pocket and unlocks a heavy metal door, which creaks as he enters a dark room on the first floor of Rowe Hall. A Liebert power and thermal system roars as it consumes moisture in the air and keeps the space at exactly 68 degrees Fahrenheit. Bloomfield’s hand stumbles across the wall and flicks a light switch on. A zoo of glass eyes stares lifelessly back at Bloomfield. “They may not hold memories, but they’ll tell you things if you can interpret them,” Bloomfield said. Central Michigan University’s Museum of Natural and Cultural History has two collections — natural history (zoology and geology) and cultural history (anthropology and history). The collections comprise about 70,000 pieces of CMU history, taxidermy and other cataloged items. The natural history collection makes up about 60 percent of the museum’s entire catalog. The collections are scattered across campus and are used by many faculty members, including biology faculty member Kirsten Nicholson. Nicholson curated the zoology collection at the museum for more than a decade before becoming a full-time faculty member. She also trained students on how to prepare, care for and maintain taxidermy. Nicholson divides the zoology collection into three forms: Exhibition — life-like representations of animals typically reserved for exhibition purpose or taxidermy. Research — study skins kept in a streamlined position suitable for storage and used to gather data. Fluid — reptiles, amphibians and fish kept in a glass jar suspended in 30 percent water and 70 percent ethanol. The university also has a skeletal collection, Nicholson said, which is made up of articulated skeletons, bones, skulls and shells. Biology faculty member Nancy Seefelt often implements collections into her classes and refers to them as a “hidden gem.” GROWING PAINS A small room on the second floor of Rowe Hall houses the museum’s fluid collection in one consolidated space. However, the metal shelving, which houses jars of frogs, fish and small reptiles is slowly growing vacant. Nicholson and Bloomfield recently received a grant from the National Science Foundation. The $126,000 grant will purchase 20 flammable cabinets for the fluid collection to be moved to Brooks Hall, making room on the second floor of Rowe for additional classroom space. It also pays for a graduate assistant, labor and additional supplies. In the past, Bloomfield said staff had to wear respirators because Formaldehyde levels in the room were too high. The museum is ridding of flammability and health issues by dispersing the collection. “The fluid objects need so many air exchanges per hour, and should be stored in proper flammable storage cabinets,” Bloomfield said. “This grant allows us to do what’s best for the collection and everyone’s safety,” Along with an increase in interest, the museum’s zoology collection continues to grow. As a result, Bloomfield has begun

dispersing objects around campus. “It just makes sense to keep everything in the building where they’re needed,” Bloomfield said. “We’ve run out of room in Rowe Hall, so we are making the best of the space we have.” The museum’s goal is to support instruction, Bloomfield said, and it is now easier for instructors to implement objects into their courses. Seefelt said for some later ornithology and mammalogy courses, professors previously taught courses in the museum. This was problematic because it was hard for students to work with specimens outside of class. “Its hard to know something while only looking at it for a couple (of) hours a week,” Seefelt said. “By moving part of the collection to Brooks Hall, professors gain better access to the resources we need.” SUPPORTING EDUCATION AND RESEARCH Bloomfield said about 99 percent of the museum’s zoology collection comes from the Great Lakes region. However, the collection has been diversified by contributions from the Detroit Zoo, like a lion skull and a taxidermy flamingo. Seefelt benefited from the museum’s taxidermy program while volunteering and later working at the museum. Now, she uses the same specimens for research and to teach her classes. “Ever since I was a child, I have been fascinated with nature and anatomy, so when I was an undergraduate at CMU, I started volunteering at the museum and doing taxidermy,” Seefelt said. “My intrigue has continued until the present day.” Bloomfield said CMU no longer offers students the opportunity to learn the taxidermy process because of a decline in interest for the art form. “Before, it was about learning the process of taxidermy. Now, it’s about the fact that we are able to use them in education and research,” he said. The museum’s research and fluid collections are used extensively in the biology department. In early courses, students learn how to analyze data to tell species apart or test hypotheses.
“They are getting some exposure to things they otherwise wouldn’t come in contact with,” Nicholson said. “In later classes, or the ‘ology’s’ as we call them, we have suites of specimens. By the time classes are done, students can go fishing in Michigan and know what they’ve caught.”

Advancement VP Tracy reflects on professional life, journey By Michael Livingston Staff Reporter news@cm-life.com
NOW
Heidi Tracy grew up on a small family-owned farm. When she was young, she often drove the tractor to cut hay in her family’s fields. Her lines usually zig-zagged until her father gave her some advice. “When you’re looking behind you to see what you’ve done, you’re not looking ahead to keep your line straight,” he told her. “Always keep your eyes on the horizon.” As the Vice President of Advancement at Central Michigan University, Tracy still keeps her father’s advice close to heart. “This institution deserves a lot. I want to do everything I can to make sure its students and faculty get all that it
deserves,” Tracy said. Tracy’s interests have changed since she first started college. In 1989, she graduated from Ohio University with a Bachelor’s degree in journalism. She had a few memorable journalistic endeavors before graduating from college. In 1988, going into her senior year, Tracy was recruited by the Associated Press to cover the Democratic National Convention. Even though she had a journalism degree, Tracy’s love of political campaigning and fundraising took her in a different direction. “I was always on the public relations track. I wanted to understand journalism – I loved journalism – but I always knew I wanted to be on the other side of it,” Tracy said. Before coming to CMU, Tracy developed an expansive career in campaigning and consulting. One of her

first full-time positions was as a grant writer for a school in her home county. After a bill passed in the Ohio senate to make schools compete for state funding, she walked into the school and offered to write grant requests. After a few years of working at the school, Tracy had the opportunity to follow her dreams in politics as the executive assistant to the mayor of Brook Park, Ohio. Slowly but surely, her bright passion for political campaigning began to fade while she was working in the mayor’s office, until she was contacted by her alma mater. The university was laying the groundwork for its first comprehensive campaign to raise more than $200 million, and Tracy was asked to be a development officer for the campaign. “I came out of our bicentennial campaign and thought, ‘I have a depth of experience here, but I don’t have the breadth,’” she said. So, she decided to point her career elsewhere. Tracy worked at Carnegie Mellon University from 2006-9 to work on a $1 billion fundraising campaign that concluded in 2013. She served as vice president for institutional advancement at Otterbein University from 2009-15. In 2011, Tracy completed Harvard University’s Institute for Educational Management program, adding an extra layer of education to her list of accomplishments. Most recently, Tracy worked as a consultant for advancement strategy, and vice president for university advancement and executive director of the TWU Foundation at Texas Woman’s University from

Heidi Tracy 2015-18. “I always feel like when I go to bed at night I have to ask, ‘What did I do to advance the common good?’” Tracy said. “So far I think I’ve done that at every position I’ve held.” Tracy began her new position at CMU on Oct. 1. As vice president for advancement, she leads CMU’s development and alumni relations offices, encompassing everything from new buildings to scholarships. She replaced Bob Martin, who retired June 30. Athletic Director Michael Alford, served in the interim. During her tenure at CMU, Tracy plans to heavily rely on student feedback by creating focus groups to perfect scholarships and financial aid. She is earning an annual salary of $240,000. “(Students) are our future, the message and things we do need to resonate with you as much as they do with the potential donor,” Tracy said. “You are our best ambassadors.”

These biannual distributions come from slot-machine revenues at Soaring Eagle Casino to be distributed to local government entities in Isabella and Arenac counties, said Interim Public Relations Director for the tribe Erik Rodriguez. This is part of a settlement reached between the state of Michigan and the tribes in Michigan back in 1993. The tribe distributes 2% of gaming revenues in lieu of paying taxes, Rodriguez said. In total, around $2.3 million was distributed in Isabella County, with around $1.2 million going to the county government and around $1.05 million going to education and schools.
The City of Mount Pleasant received $257,965 for programs and equipment including: • Partners Empowering All Kids (PEAK), an after-school program • Preparation for the 2020 U.S. Census • Mid-Michigan Investigative Narcotics Team • Cold water rescue suits • Technical rescue team equipment • Septic receiving station • Jetscan sewer camera Isabella County itself received $325,000 for PFAS sampling at the Isabella County Landfill, the Isabella Recycling Program and the Isabella County Commission on Aging. Review: Hunan House offers exceptional food at right price SHOP TALK
By Michael Livingston Staff Reporter news@cm-life.com
Hunan House has a mission to serve quality food made from fresh ingredients but recognizes their clientele of struggling college students need affordable options. The restaurant has had several owners in its nearly 25 years in Mount Pleasant. Current owners, Carol Wang and her husband, Jason, moved to Mount Plesant so Carol could pursue a Master’s degree from Central Michigan University. In 2008, Jason bought Hunan from his brother. The couple has been running the restaurant ever since. The Wang family has centered their lives around running Hunan House. In the evenings Carol and Jason’s children wait in the dining room as their parents close down the restaurant. “I’ve never seen two people more hardworking and more committed in my entire life,” Hunan House employee Duane Ling said. Hunan House, along with the neighboring plaza, burnt down seven years ago. For 18 months where the Mount Pleasant community was unsure if Hunan was being rebuilt or would ever reopen. “It was a lot to go through, with the insurance and the landlords. It was a tough 18 months,” Wang said. Nevertheless, Hunan returned the following year in the exact same spot. Carol said that the restaurant had built a loyal customer base and there were no problems getting the clientele back after it had been rebuilt. ERASE THE STRESS FROM THE DAY
Isaac Ritchey | Photo Editor Former Central Michigan head coach Sue Guevara hands out MAC championship rings at a ceremony before a scrimmage Oct. 27 at McGuirk Arena.
SUE GUEVARA’S LIFE IN
... WITH AN INDOOR, HEATED POOL
RETIREMENT By Evan Petzold Sports Editor sports@cm-life.com
Sue Guevara paced the sideline. She wore a white Central Michigan longsleeve shirt, gold sweatpants and maroon shoes. Her medicine ball used to sit during media timeouts occupied a spot behind the bench. Her personalized “Coach G” clipboard and Yeti Tumbler weren’t far away. Déjà vu? Yeah, that was it. Guevara grinned early on as she coached. Slowly but surely, she found her groove, demanding more from her team as the Oct. 27 alumni game continued during the Maroon and Gold Scrimmage at McGuirk Arena. Vintage Guevara. She was one of the last people to leave the court that day, an example that proves this is the same Guevara – the one that’s loved and cherished by everyone involved in the women’s basketball program. But her life has changed. This Guevara – the one that coached the alumni team – is retired. “It was a wonderful ride,” Guevara said. “I’m ready to go a different speed.” Time will eventually take its course, and everything will be normal without her. Right now, the Guevara-less era remains a cloud of
confusion, and it’ll take time for people to adjust to life without her. It’s the job of first-year head coach Heather Oesterle, a nine-year assistant under Guevara, to fully assume the position and build on the success of her predecessor. Guevara has no regrets. “It was the best decision I’ve made,” she said. It began with an 88-87 loss to No. 9 seed Michigan State in the first round of the 2019 NCAA Tournament. Guevara was exhausted. Just over a month later, on April 25, Guevara got on the recruiting trail. She spent time in Milwaukee with assistant coach Murriel Page and Pennsylvania with Oesterle. Then, Guevara went to Ireland for 10 days in May. That’s when everything started to change. “I had such a good time discovering, seeing another part of the world and being free to travel,” Guevara said. “I’ve never been able to do that before.” Guevara had rotator cuff surgery following her trip. During the rehabilitation stage, she took alone time to reflect on the future. After all, Guevara was getting ready to turn 65 years old on July 8, meaning over half her life – 39 years – had been spent with a basketball. “What bothered me was I wasn’t itching to get • GUEVARA | 31-32

back into the gym,” Guevara said. “That’s never happened to me before.” Throughout her career, Guevara coined the term, “You can’t cheat the grind.” She wasn’t ready to get back out on the court, and she wasn’t ever going to be able to fully assert herself as the head coach, giving every ounce of passion, work ethic and commitment. Rather than cheating the grind, Guevara put herself first. It’s something she hadn’t often done in the past, and made the choice to retire on her 65th birthday – July 8, 2019. It was publicly made known four days later. Two of her players, current junior guards Micaela Kelly and Maddy Watters, were shocked. “It was unexpected,” Kelly said. “Obviously, things happen for a reason, so I look at it as a blessing in disguise, but I never lost hope or faith because she handed it down to a great person.” During a summer basketball camp at Central Michigan, Oesterle was teaching the next generation of college players. Guevara was at her nephew’s graduation. As basketball practice was starting up for the women’s basketball team, Guevara left the country for two weeks. She was in Spain from Sept. 27 to Oct. 7. Guevara went to different parks in the Madrid area and checked out a handful of museums and architecture. She spent a day on the water

and even went to see former Central Michigan forward Tinara Moore play professionally for Cadi La Seu. Her former player, Shonda Long, got married on Oct. 11. Guevara was able to attend, when normally she wouldn’t have been able to due to homecoming festivities and practice back in Mount Pleasant. Guevara has four former players getting married in 2020. She won’t miss a single one. Another former player, Stacey Thomas, is being inducted into the University of Michigan Hall of Honor on Nov. 15. Thomas attended Michigan and graduated in 2000 after playing for Guevara, and she was selected 23rd overall in the WNBA Draft by the Portland Fire. You better believe Guevara will be there. If Guevara was the head coach, that wouldn’t be possible, as the Chippewas play No. 9 Louisville on Nov. 14 before staying in Kentucky for a matchup against Western Kentucky on Nov. 17. Guevara will probably make her way to Florida for 10-12 days in January or February and enjoy the weather while those in Michigan are suffering from snow and frigid temperatures. She’ll travel up north to do biking, snowshoeing and cross country skiing. “It’s those kinds of things,” Guevara said of what makes her happy about retirement. For the first time in 12 years, Central Michigan is no longer Guevara’s team. The program belongs to Oesterle. Before Central Michigan’s preseason scrimmage against the University of Michigan, Oesterle sent Guevara a text message. She expressed her nervousness.
Feel at
typically responds with a question. What’s your strength right now? What do you like? What do you want to fix? How should you fix it? “It’s not like, ‘Oh, what the hell,’” Guevara said. “Nothing like that at all. I’m just grateful that she’s asking me. Heather is my second daughter, and I just want to do everything I can do to help her.” Between Oesterle, Page, Shelton and new assistant Mark Simons, there needs to be a level of disagreement at times to spark a conversation. Yet Oesterle is confident enough in her abilities that having Guevara around isn’t ever a burden. Rather, it’s a major bonus. Where some basketball programs pay for consultants or a special assistant to the head coach, Oesterle gets it for free. Guevara hasn’t asked for a dime, and she’ll never. That’s not who she is, nor is it what the former coach wants in her retired life. “When she comes in, I’m so excited to see her,” Oesterle said. “It’s like, ‘Oh, I’ve missed you.’ We get along really well, and she’s a great mentor to me.” There’s also the community aspect of Guevara’s retired life. It’s exemplified when she walks into Ric’s Food Center and gets asked how she’s doing while also being praised for her accomplishments as the head coach. Guevara’s response is simple and sweet. “Thank you, I appreciate that,” Guevara often says in return, “but now I’m going to be in the stands with you.”

“I’m glad you are; you’re supposed to be,” Guevara responded. “This is a scrimmage, and this is what you get to do. Trust your gut. You know what you’re doing.” It wasn’t the first time Oesterle reached out to Guevara, and it definitely won’t be the last. OESTERLE: “I After all, Guevara know sometimes considers Oesterle her (Guevara) feels like second child. Meanshe comes around while, Oesterle considtoo much, but I told ers Guevara her second her, ‘Coach, you’re mother. welcome anytime.’” But just like a mother to a child when she’s finally on her own, Guevara doesn’t pry – not even the slightest bit. “I’m very sensitive to what I say and when I say it,” Guevara said. “I only give my opinion when I’m asked.” Guevara, who still lives in Mount Pleasant, watches practice nearly every day, either from the bleachers or on her computer. Oesterle often invites her to help participate in practice events. When that is not the case, Guevara stays silent. “I know sometimes she feels like she comes around too much, but I told her, ‘Coach, you’re welcome anytime,’” Oesterle said. When Oesterle asks questions, like what Guevara saw during a certain practice, her mentor

2019’S BIGGEST SPORTS MOMENTS By Evan Petzold Sports Editor sports@cm-life.com
Throughout the past 365 days, Central Michigan Life has had the opportunity to cover championships, retirements, new hires and a football program that went from a 1-11 season to the Mid-American Conference championship game. While there are many stories that could’ve been included, here are some of the top from 2019: REIGHARD FIRED FOLLOWING INVESTIGATION Longtime gymnastics coach Jerry Reighard was placed on paid administrate leave Feb. 21 pending an internal investigation on. While the investigation didn’t involved the Larry Nassar case or Title IX issues, it surrounded athlete misconduct. The misconduct, which was revealed on March 28, involved Reighard telling a gymnast to provide false information regarding a concussion to medical staff to remain in competition. Complaints against Reighard dated back to 1997, according to his personnel file. He was fired from his position as the gymnastics coach on April 18. Reighard was the coach from 1984-2019. BASEBALL WINS MAC, PLAYS IN NCAA TOURNAMENT Led by first-year coach Jordan Bischel, CMU went 47-14 in the 2019 season along with a 22-5 mark in the Mid-American Conference. The Chippewas won 19-straight games from April 26 to May
31. The successful winning streak included a MAC Tournament title and trip the NCAA Regionals, where Bischel’s team picked up a 6-5 win over Miami (Florida). Replacing longtime coach Steve Jaksa, Bischel’s inaugural season was the first time in program history since 1995 that the Chippewas secured a MAC Tournament title and NCAA Tournament berth. Bischel was named MAC Coach of the Year.
JONKER RETIRES, SALMON TAKES OVER After 40 seasons at the helm of the Chippewas, softball coach Margo Jonker retired from her position on May 13. Her departure came as a surprise to the athletic department. Jonker finished her career with a 1,268-808-7 overall record. She helped CMU to the NCAA Tournament on 13 occasions, secured 10 MAC Tournament championships and 10 MAC regular season titles. Coming over from Division II Davenport, McCall Salmon officially took over for Jonker as the coach on June 20. GUEVARA RETIRES, OESTERLE TAKES OVER On her 65th birthday, women’s basketball coach Sue Guevara went to athletic director Michael Alford’s office and told him she was ready to hand up the whistle. The 12-year coach’s retirement was official on July 12. Her nine-year assistant, Heather Oesterle, immediately took over the program. Guevara left the Chippewas as the winningest coach in program history with a 231-156 record. She led CMU to three NCAA
Tournaments, including two consecutive appearances in 2018 and 2019. She won the MAC Tournaments in 2014 and 2018. In the 2018 season, Guevara’s team went to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament.
CHANGES TO THE CHIPPEWA CHAMPIONS CENTER In a newsletter from CMU Athletics on Aug. 12, the Chippewa Champions Center – budgeted at $32.5 million – looked different than most people expected. When the project was approved by the board of trustees in September 2018, the structure was a three-floor building. However, the project was overbudgeted by $7.1 million, so it had to be scaled back to two floors. On Oct. 4, CMU Athletics released the planned interior features for the Chippewa Champions Center, which includes many opportunities for student-athlete experience and fan engagement inside the 62,240-square-foot structure. MCELWAIN REENERGIZES FOOTBALL PROGRAM While nobody from the outside expected it, first-year football coach Jim McElwain knew there was a possibility of taking the Chippewas to the top following a 1-11 record in the 2018 season. McElwain was hired in early December 2018 and developed a new structure that ultimately changed the culture. The Chippewas, after being predicted to finish dead last, are 8-4 overall and 6-2 in the Mid-American Conference, earning the MAC West Division title and a trip to the MAC championship game at Ford Field for the first time since the 2009 season.

Football uses doubters as motivation to win MAC after being picked last
By Evan Petzold Sports Editor sports@cm-life.com
Da’Quaun Jamison danced to the sounds of the Marching Chips in celebration of a Mid-American Conference West Division title and a trip to the MAC championship game. Moments after the senior safety’s dancing concluded, Jamison emotions changed. A serious look came over his face. “That’s what happens when you pick us last,” Jamison said. “That’s what happens.”
Senior running back Jonathan Ward bounced by moments later, flashing a smile while saying, “That’s a turnaround.” The Central Michigan football team was fresh off a 49-7 victory over Toledo at Kelly/Shorts Stadium. The Chippewas, at 8-4 overall and 6-2 in the conference, weren’t expected to cheer like this at the end of the regular season, especially not after going 1-11 without a conference win in 2018 under former coach John Bonamego. w FOOTBALL | 34-35

CONTINUED FROM 34
From the outside looking in, nobody thought it was possible – exemplified by the fact that Central Michigan was picked last in the MAC preseason media poll. But the inside was all that mattered, and the Central Michigan football team believed in something more than themselves, coming together to create a season that will be remembered forever. “From the moment I first heard they picked us last, I was like, ‘Yeah, OK,’” said senior quarterback Quinten Dormady. “Going into this year, I knew we could get here. I knew we had it in the locker room.” The only commodity holding the Chippewas back from winning the MAC West title and securing a spot in the MAC championship game was buying in to first-year coach Jim McElwain’s system, one that’s defined by structure, accountability and discipline. The players bought in immediately. “When I met these guys about a year ago, there were some guys that I could tell wanted to make a choice,” McElwain said. “The guys have decided, ‘Well, there’s more to life than yourself.’ It’s great to give yourself for others.” All that senior linebacker Michael Oliver had to do was quickly glance at McElwain’s resume to understand he was a coach worth playing for and one that could glorify the Chippewas. McElwain, 57, had a 44-27 career head coaching record before coming to Central Michigan. He won the Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year (2014), SEC Coach of the Year (2015) and was a two-time SEC Eastern Division champ (2015-16). That’s what Oliver saw. It was enough for him to want to jump on board. “Look at his resume,” Oliver said. “He’s a winner, so that’s all you look at.” Regardless of what F.E.A. specifically means, it’s a calling to all the people that picked Central Michigan to finish at the bottom of the conference. There was a newfound unity between the staff and players under McElwain, and it was easy for him to recognize. “Once we bought in to each other and were there for each other, that’s when things became special,” Dormady said. Hanging in McElwain’s office is a sign that reads: “Dead last.” He’s used that as motivation since the conference preseason rankings came out in July. “Well, OK, if that’s what people think of you, go out and prove them different,” McElwain said. Toledo, Western Michigan, Northern Illinois, Eastern Michigan and Ball State were all projected to finish higher in the MAC West standings. As a matter of fact, the Rockets – a team the Chippewas stomped by 42 points – were the favorite to win the division. First, it was Eastern Michigan. Northern Illinois came after; then it was Ball State. Lastly, McElwain’s squad rolled over Toledo. The only one that got away was Western Michigan. Oliver said getting picked last allowed Central Michigan to lock in and focus on each individual battle without one game being placed at a higher emphasis than another. “Each team that we faced, ‘Y’all picked us last. OK, we’ll show you who is last,’” Oliver said. “We played each game just like that.” It all goes back to a simple, yet mysterious acronym – F.E.A. The meaning behind the acronym is a team secret, but it’s not difficult to formulate a few educated guesses on what the players are talking about. Oliver and Ward wouldn’t explain. When asked, they both repeated themselves. “Just F.E.A.,” Oliver said in response. “F.E.A.,” Ward added. Regardless of what F.E.A. specifically means, it’s a calling to all the people that picked Central Michigan to finish at the bottom of the conference. Each week, F.E.A. became more apparent on social media with the players, an indication of how they began to believe in what is now a reality – a MAC West title – more and more after every

victory. “We heard about it every day from last year when it happened to being picked last in the MAC,” Dormady said. “That was a huge motivating factor for a lot of the guys in the locker room.” Just one season ago, Central Michigan was a dysfunctional team with nothing to play for in November and December. Playing in 10 of 12 community and all the games this season, the Chippewas out there. 6-foot, 202-pound running back has accumulated 164 Jim McElwain carries for 1,056 yards and Head football coach 15 touchdowns after just having 212 yards and one touchdown on 76 carries in 2018. Life for Ward and his teammates have drastically changed in the last 12 months. “It’s the complete opposite,” Ward said. “Last year, at this time, I’m sad to say it, but we weren’t playing for anything. Coming in today, we knew there was so much on the line. It was a lot of pressure, but it was good pressure, something we worked for and
“
wanted.” Ward wasn’t the only one divert from his old self and take on a new team-oriented identity. Once everyone came together with the right individual mindset, the team’s focus shifted from selfishness to selflessness. That translated to winning. Through a 1-11 season, inheriting a new coach and being picked last in the conference, Central Michigan is now ready to play somewhere nobody expected the program to be at this point. The Chippewas are set to take on Miami (Ohio) at noon Dec. 7 at Ford Field in Detroit. McElwain was at Ford Field for MAC Media Day on July 23, and he’s excited to go back for an entirely different reason. He’s returning in an attempt to claim a championship. “Who would’ve ever thought back then, right?” McElwain said, laughing over his words. “It’s exciting for our university, the community and all the Chippewas out there.” Despite being picked to finish last, the Chippewas aren’t done yet. The coaches and players want to enjoy the ride, taking the path that keeps them winning for the longest. Ward danced on the conductor’s stand to the fight song played by the Marching Chips following the 49-7 win over Toledo that clinched the MAC West championship. He’s not ready to be done dancing. “That’s the emotions of all the hard work that’s paid off up to this point, but we still have another goal to accomplish,” Ward said. “Once we accomplish that goal, we’ll be doing more dancing.”

minds to ideas we may have not heard before and advocate for issues important to us. The opportunity to have such an impact on our campus and have open dialogue is one we can’t take for granted. We must continue to create an environment that allows for this respectful dialogue and allows for different voices and opinions to be heard. These conversations are important and must be had. If we shy away from talking about important issues or close ourselves off to understanding different opinions than ours, we miss out on the opportunity to expand our view of the world around us and a key part of our education. SGA meetings take place every Monday at 7 p.m. in the U.C. Auditorium. All are welcome to attend and contribute to the conversation. For more information about anything in this column or SGA, please contact SGA Press Secretary Katie Prebelich at prebe1k@ cmich.edu.

McElwain deserved MAC Coach of the Year Jim McElwain is no stranger to awards. He earned Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year in 2014 with Colorado State, and he later added SEC Coach of the Year to his resume in 2015 while at Florida. Why not make it three Coach of the Year awards in the last six years? The first-year Central Michigan coach deserved his Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year honors. He was awarded Wednesday, Dec. 4 as MAC Coach of the Year. McElwain inherited a dysfunctional program from former coach John Bonamego, who was fired Nov. 29 just hours after the conclusion of his team’s 1-11 season in 2018. The only recruits that McElwain brought in were quarterbacks Quinten Dormady (graduate transfer), David Moore (NJCAA), Daniel Richardson (true freshman) and a few others from the transfer portal. Besides that, he’s been forced to work with what he was given. McElwain made it clear that the players deserve the credit for the success due to ridding themselves of selfishness and coming together as a team.

SGA provides a space for important discussions These days it can sometimes feel that our country has more that divides us than unites us. With strong beliefs and passion, it can be difficult to engage in conversations about the topics that are most important to us out of fear of polarization with the people around us. Being able to have respectful conversations that don’t just explain what we believe but why we believe it are important to finding common ground and unifying us. Understanding the experiences others have had that shape their opinions allows us to connect, instead of judging others solely on what they believe. A college campus is a great place to allow these conversations to happen. Because of the variety of backgrounds and walks of life present, it creates an opportunity for us to learn about perspectives and ideas other than those we are familiar with or may have grown up with. Having that space to formulate and share our beliefs while hearing those of others is critical to our education. Looking to understand the opinions of others can help us to better understand the world around us. At Central Michigan University, the Student Government Association provides students with the space to engage in healthy, intellectual debate. Any student can attend SGA meetings and propose legislation. This allows students to brainstorm ways to improve our campus while discussing important topics relevant to CMU and our society. During these discussions, we can open our

“It’s nothing I did,” McElwain said. “I’ve got no magic formula. They made a choice, and it’s a personal decision for each one of us.” The Chippewas were 0-8 in the MAC last season, and Bonamego was fired even after posting an 8-5 record with a 6-2 mark in the conference just one year prior. McElwain has the Chippewas at 8-4 overall and 6-2 in the MAC. Central Michigan has earned its chance to play in the MAC championship game. Plain and simple, that’s why McElwain is the MAC Coach of the Year recipient. McElwain’s offensive and defensive coordi-
nator, Charlie Frye and Robb Akey, respectively, agree. Akey went as far as to say his coach “absolutely” deserved the award. Frye: “He’s the best. He makes it about the players. Everything that he does is player-centric. He knows it’s about them and makes it about them. Everything we do is for the kids.” Akey: “We were supposed to be dead last. We came rolling in this door, and they said, ‘Y’all are going to be last, last, last.’ Didn’t win a game in the conference last year, and look where we are at now. You look at these guys here, they look like seasoned veterans. You look at what our offense has done, and they were not in any category last year. They are leading them this year. The bottom line is wins and losses. We’ve got more, and they had less.” Playing the odds and checking out McElwain’s current 8-4 overall and 6-2 conference record, he’s checked the most important box – a winning record. It doesn’t hurt that the Chippewas are playing for a championship.
