Community member raising money to honor his veteran relatives Courtney Pederson Staff Reporter news@cm-life.com
Robert Armstead spent 19 months exhausting himself, and his savings, caring for his ill father who died in December. During the last nine months, Armstead has been corresponding with the U.S. Department of Veteran’s Affairs and multiple cemeteries to fulfill his father’s final wish. Armstead is working to get his father, great-uncle and great-great-grandfather, who are all veterans, buried next to one another at the Great Lakes National Cemetery. “My dad’s death wish was to be buried next to his uncle, so I made that happen,” said Armstead, who is a student in the Central Michigan University Senior Citizen Audit Program. “My great-great-grandfathers’ tombstone is deteriorating – and will probably be (completely) denigrated in the next 100 years. They are not taking very good care of them, where they are now. I want to get them all buried together.” His great-great-grandfather, Peter Armstead, fought in the Civil War. His great-uncle, Earl Armstead, fought in World War I. His father, who is also named Robert Armstead, fought in World War II. The Armsteads have always been interested in genealogy and the history of their family. In fact, one of his aunts, Fern, traced the family’s genealogy on her own in the 1960s and 70s, even traveling to Europe to get more information. Fern’s daughter and Armstead’s cousin, Ina Woolum, said she thinks what Armstead is doing to honor their veteran relatives is a wonderful tribute. “I think my mother especially would be thrilled,” Woolum
said. “I’d give anything for her to be alive to see this.” Although Armstead, a 1982 alumnus who recently moved back to Mount Pleasant, is not a veteran himself, he said he values and understands the importance of public service and the sacrifices veterans have made for the country. His relatives are buried in southeast Michigan and New River Cemetery in Port Austin. What Armstead is trying to do is have his three relatives disinterred, taken to a funeral home, transported to Great Lakes National Cemetery and then hold a ceremony to put the three veterans in their final resting place. “It gets very complex because my great-great-grandfather, Peter ... that’s over 100 years ago that he was buried,” Armstead said. Whatever is left of Peter Armstead’s gravesite will be buried at Great Lakes National Cemetery. “There are two unique aspects to it, if it happens,” said Great
Lakes National Cemetery assistant director Christopher English. “It would be the first Civil War veteran that would be buried at our cemetery and it would be first time that three related veterans would be interned side-by-side.” Great Lakes National Cemetery is one of the four VA National Cemeteries in Michigan, 136 nationwide, according to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. “It’s important that veterans know they have this benefit available to them, because you wouldn’t believe how many don’t (know),” English said. “We are excited when people take advantage of the benefit they earned by serving their country. We refer to it as a gift from a grateful nation.” To help finance his father’s final request, Armstead has created the GoFundMe “Paying Tribute to Three Family War Veterans” to gather donations to make the final burial possible. “Donations raised for Peter, Earl and Robert will be used for disinterment/reinterment, transportation, funeral home, and other related burial costs totaling $15,000,” the GoFundMe reads. The first three GoFundMe donations have all come from people who are affiliated with CMU. In response Armstead said enthusiastically, “Thank you, Chips!” Armstead hopes that he will have the process completed by the end of October. If not, he will have to wait until next spring due to the weather. Once the money is raised, and the process begins, he will host a ceremony at Great Lakes Cemetery that will be open to the public. “The reason I’m going public is because I want people to realize what the veterans went through,” Armstead said. “It’s all about paying respect to veterans.”
CRIME LOG
CMU police investigate FBI tip, fraudulent internships Melissa Frick Senior Reporter
news@cm-life.com
The following incidents were among those handled by the Central Michigan University Police Department from Sept. 16-21. SEPT. 16 CMU police investigated a suspicious situations report around 3 p.m. involving a CMU faculty member who received a suspicious email from a former student. Lt. Cameron Wassman said a 56-year-old female faculty member received an email from a 35-year-old man who was a former student. The email allegedly said the former student dreamt about the female faculty member, and that he wanted to “reach out and say hi,” Wassman said. The incident was reported by the victim’s husband. A 25-year-old female student caused a disturbance in a CMU classroom around 3:15 p.m., which led to police conducting a welfare check after the incident was reported at 4:25 p.m. Wassman said there was a verbal argument where the student allegedly broke her own glasses and threw them at the professor, a 52-year-old woman. Police made contact with the student, where she admitted to the verbal argument but denied breaking and throwing
her own glasses. The student apologized to the faculty member and has denied counseling, police said. SEPT. 17 Police investigated two cases of bike larceny on Sept. 17. The first incident involved a 10-speed bike valued at $200, which police said was last seen two weeks ago near the Woldt/Emmons entrance. Police said the bike was unlocked and was not registered with CMUPD. The bike belonged to a 19-year-old woman. The incident has been entered as stolen in a national database. In the second bike larceny case, a bike was taken but later returned to a bike rack outside of Herrig Hall. Police said the bike, which was unlocked, was taken around 3 p.m. on Sept. 17. Through video surveillance, police learned the suspect took the bike, rode it around campus and returned the bike shortly after 6 p.m. When police made contact with the 18-year-old male suspect, he allegedly told police he simply needed a quick ride and didn’t think much of it. The victim, an 18-year-old woman, did not press criminal charges. SEPT. 18 A 40-year-old woman who was allegedly intoxicated was arrested for disorderly conduct
at 4:50 p.m. Police said the woman was riding a Greyhound bus when the bus driver pulled over on Broomfield Street and called police because the woman was allegedly yelling and grabbing other people. Police conducted a welfare check at 3:45 p.m. after an individual allegedly made suicidal comments. CMUPD responded to a suicide attempt at 9:20 p.m. which was unrelated to the previous incident that afternoon. SEPT. 19 CMUPD received a tip from the Federal Bureau of Investigation that someone may have been selling narcotics from Calkins Hall. Police went to the residence hall at 7 p.m. and made contact with the suspect, a 20-year-old man, who denied being a drug dealer. He consented to officers searching his area of his room. Police found a small amount of marijuana wax, which was confiscated. No criminal charges were placed. Police investigated a larceny report of a stolen game system from Kulhavi Hall at 1:19 p.m. Wassman said a 21-year-old man purposely left a gaming system in the hall’s lobby for everyone to use. When the system went missing, police looked through surveillance videos to identify the person who took it. The suspect, a
23-year-old man, was contacted by police and admitted to taking the equipment. The suspect returned the equipment, and the victim is not pursuing criminal charges, Wassman said. SEPT. 20 CMU police are still investigating a case of fraudulent email scams that were reported on Sept. 20. There have been three reported incidents where individuals received emails about internship opportunities that were later determined to be fraudulent. In these cases, a fraudulent business reached out to victims asking them to purchase gift cards, scratch off the back and send pictures of the codes. Of the three victims who received the email, two complied with the requests. Wassman said there has been about $1,200 in stolen money. There are no suspects at this time, he said. SEPT. 21 While on patrol, CMU police saw a car parked at a dead-end on Able Road near Denison Street at 9:40 p.m. Officers made contact with the two individuals in the car, who admitted to having consumed marijuana. The individuals, an 18-year-old man and 19-yearold man, voluntarily surrendered 0.7 ounces of marijuana. Both were issued civil infraction citations for marijuana use.

CRACKING THE CASE
CMU police use phone-hacking technology to solve crimes By Melissa Frick Senior Reporter news@cm-life.com
Central Michigan University Police Department has a new kind of weapon in its arsenal to bust crime: A detective with the ability to hack locked cell phones. After receiving four weeks of training last month at the National Computer Forensics Institute in Alabama, CMUPD Det. Jason VanConant is now able to extract and download information from cell phones, even without a passcode. VanConant, who has worked with CMUPD for three years, was trained by the U.S. Secret Service to extract data from cell phones without needing a password. He is now the only detective at CMUPD, and one of the few in Mid-Michigan, with this kind of unique cell phone forensics training, giving university police the ability to crack cases in a day that would have previously taken weeks to figure out. While VanConant already had some prior knowledge of how to extract data from cell phones, the Mobile Device Extraction class focused on working around a passcode to hack a phone. Cell phone data is stored in a tiny chip inside the device, VanConant explained. To retrieve data from a phone without its password, an expert must be able to take apart the phone and connect wires to the chip to extract the data. Once the data is extracted, it is downloaded into a searchable database where CMU police can search key words, making it easier to search through the tons of extracted data.
VanConant said the phone is pretty much unusable after the data has been extracted, so officers need to obtain a search warrant before hacking the phone. There are two possible scenarios when police want to extract data from a phone, VanConant said: If someone is a victim in a situation and wants police to investigate, the victim can consent and allow an officer to search their phone. On the other hand, if someone has been involved in a crime and isn’t being cooperative, a police officer can legally seize the phone without a warrant to prevent evidence from
“This technology could be used for everything from abductions to domestics to drug crimes, assaults. People confess to other people on their phones.” Jason VanConant Detective, CMU Police
being destroyed, he said. “Once I’ve seized it, if you’re not cooperative, I would try to get a warrant and get legal permission to extract the phone,” he said. Cell phones are an integral part of most cases, VanConant said, because they contain a wealth of information about people’s lives.
Melissa Frick | Senior Reporter Central Michigan University Police Detective Jason VanConant uses a microscope to solder wires to a cell phone for data extraction. “Cell phones are involved in just about every case that we do,” he said. “Everybody communicates through their cell phone. This technology could be used for everything from abductions to domestics to drug crimes, assaults. People confess to other people on their phones.” While the training he received isn’t necessarily new or groundbreaking, the technology isn’t easily accessible to police officers, VanConant said. That’s why the training is so helpful to CMUPD, he said – it will give officers access to data that took much longer to obtain before. In the past, the only cell phone forensics team in the area was the Michigan State Police department. Because MSP had the only mobile device extraction team in Mid-Michigan, their services were highly sought after by police agencies around the state. “Normally we would send our cases over to MSP crime lab, and it would be a 4-6 week turnaround,” VanConant said. “Here, I can do it in a day.” Because VanConant is one of the few detectives in the area who is trained to extract data from cell phones, he is often sent cases from other police agencies who need to hack a locked phone. CMU Police Lt. Cameron Wassman said VanConant deals with several cases each week
where he assists other agencies with data extraction. “It’s been incredibly valuable, not only to us but to other police forces,” Wassman said. “So many cases involve technology these days. We’re fortunate we had the ability to send him; it’s been an incredible asset.” Along with receiving training by the U.S. Secret Service, VanConant also received new equipment to extract data from cell phones, including a microscope and a soldering iron. VanConant had to be put on a waiting list prior to receiving the training, which is completely paid for by U.S. Secret Service. But for VanConant, who has always had an interest in forensics, the wait was worth it. “This stuff is very useful,” he said. “It’s imperative (to our work) because every case deals with technology. Not only extracting data from cell phones is important, but the speed at which we can do it. We don’t have to wait six weeks for a crime anymore, so that’s a big plus.” When it comes to cracking cases on a university police force, the detective said timing is key. “We don’t have six weeks when it comes to crime,” he said. “In the campus world, six weeks is half a semester. We don’t have that kind of time with students coming and going, so quicker is better for us.”

I
saiah Oliver sat in a leather office chair alongside seven other trustees for only his second time Thursday, but the youngest current trustee said it felt like his 10th. Oliver was appointed to the Central Michigan University Board of Trustees by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer earlier this year. The CMU alumnus earned an undergraduate degree in graphic design from the university in 2007. He is the president and CEO of the Community Foundation of Greater Flint, a public charity created to serve the people of Genesee County. “The culture of this board is one of learning and inclusion,” board chair Tricia Keith said. “The Board of Trustees is a living entity that continues to evolve, and (Oliver) has added value to the board.” Oliver sat down with Central Michigan Life following a Board of Trustees meeting Sept. 19 to discuss his commitment to serve and the experience he brings to the board.
|
Q&A
Why did you want to be a trustee?
What new perspectives do you bring to the Board of Trustees? I think sometimes people say “young trustee” or “trustee of color.” No, I am a CMU Trustee, and I bring some lived experience. The intersectionality that I bring to the table is very different than other trustees because I am a person of color and the youngest trustee. But I am also a father and a husband, and I am resident of the city of Flint in Genesee County. I bring all of those perspectives to the table. The eight trustees have so many different positions and perspectives they bring to the table. That diversity is going to
Everyone has a set of experiences they bring to the table. My K-12 experience came out yesterday as we discussed what we provide on campus, retention of students and creating engaging environments. I was able to relate it to my experiences in the K-12 system because you are always thinking about where students are coming from and going. At the college level, we need to be thinking about the same thing.
What is important is enrollment and retention of students. I also love the work we are doing to explore equity and inclusion. At some point, we need to take the data we have and disaggregate it to find out where our students aren’t succeeding, where the disparities exist and focus our resources on closing the gaps. That way, we move the organization forward. Part of our work is finding the challenges and barriers to success. Then we will be able to provide students with the opportunities to explore a quality education that we are attempting to provide.
I’ve committed much of my volunteer time to serving public institutions that served a special place in my life. I served on the public hospital board where my wife and children were born and in the public-school district to which my wife and I are alumni. Now, I have an opportunity to serve an organization that played a pivotal role in my development and challenged my assumptions about life and engagement. It shaped me into the person, professional and father I am. My commitment to CMU falls in line with my commitment to serve the public institutions that hold a special place in my heart.
The board, campus and executive team have been very welcoming and helpful in filling gaps. I have enjoyed the learning experience. I plan to continue learning the organization, and the campus community is going to continue to evolve. My leadership in this space is going to evolve, but I’m loving it right now.
What experience do you bring as a person who has worked in education and community service?
How do you think CMU can improve? Which areas are most important to you?
––––––––––––––––––––––––––
How has been your experience as a trustee been so far?
make us a strong board.
Isaiah Oliver
As the youngest current member of the CMU Board of Trustees, Isaiah Oliver brings a different perspective to the board and is working to improve his former university. Oliver, currently president and CEO of a Flint-based public charity, was appointed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer earlier this year. Isaac Ritchey ■ Senior Reporter
How important are students’ voices to the Board of Trustees? Our primary audiences are our customers and stakeholders. And, by function of the work we do, we do two things: we provide quality learning experiences for students on campus, and we have a responsibility to ensure those students get to those opportunities and have the best conditions for embracing that learning. A by-product to that is we hire people and engage staff, but our primary audience is the students. So, if we aren’t engaging with them and aren’t respected in the decisions we make, we’re missing the boat. Students are vital and an important part of our decision-making process. We should find ways to engage them, which is why I enjoy being a part of the student-liaison committee.

Short Term Rentals Makayla Coffee | Staff Reporter City Commissioners meet on Sept. 23 at City Hall.
Commission funds research for mayor election processes By Makayla Coffee Staff Reporter news@cm-life.com
City Commissioners unanimously passed a budget amendment to provide $4,000 to the Center for Research and Rural Studies (CARRS) to research the election process of mayors at the Sept. 23 meeting. The idea behind funding CARRS is to obtain an objective view on whether it is more beneficial for a mayor to be elected by the city commission, or to be elected at large. Commissioner Tony Kulick is a part of the Charter Committee and felt that it was important to seek out a third party source as individuals opposed are “just going to hear the negatives and people in favor are just going to hear the positives.” “By having CARRS, a neutral third party, come in and do that I think we’ll get a better survey [and] we’ll be more statistically correct,” Kulick said. The Charter Committee has been working on research related to how mayors are elected in cities similar to Mount Pleasant. The research focuses on 18 cities similar to Mount Pleasant in population or with a university. Out of the cities being researched, 14 out of the 18 cities have the mayor elected at large, and four have the mayor elected by the city
commission. To further understand the election processes for each city, completion of the research would be done by questioning individuals to figure out the pros and cons of the different election processes. The committee recommends this $4,000 budget amendment on research with CARRS to be completed before the city commission decides to consider a ballot proposal to change the election process, said City Manager Nancy Ridley. Vice Mayor Lori Gillis is in support of allowing mayors to be elected at large and has been waiting years for this topic to be focused on, she said. “Since my tenure here on the city commission, we have spoken about this topic several times,” Gillis said. “I am very happy to see we’re going in some direction to try and get different possibilities of a mayor elect.” Gillis also claims individuals have spoken to her about wanting residents and community members to be responsible for the election of the mayor. She encourages any community members in favor of a mayor elect at large to reach out and voice their opinions. According to Ridley, CARRS claims that research can be completed by the end of this year with a presentation prepared for January of next year.

A woman flies into the air, and for a moment it seems like she’ll never come down. She spins, flips and plummets toward the mat with four men prepared to catch her – the same ones who nearly threw her into the rafters seconds before. There was no foam pit, just the arms she safely landed in. The teammates laughed together while setting her on her feet. The confidence and trust shared between them was so strong, that when their coach said to do it again, there was no hesitation. The Central Michigan University Cheer team relies on male teammates to perform stunts like this. However, coach DaRron Johnson said he’s been struggling to find men for the coed team. “On a coed team, the guys do all the lifting,” Johnson said. “It’s important to have guys on the team because it increases our skill level and the things we’re able to do.” Johnson has been a part of the program for nine years building human pyramids and voluntarily launching humans into the air. There was a time when he was out there doing it himself. He was a member of the squad for five-anda-half years before becoming an assistant for a year-and-ahalf. He’s been the head coach of CMU’s women’s and coed cheer team for just over a year. “It didn’t used to be as bad,” Johnson said. “When I first started, we had about 16-18 guys. It’s a little bit stricter now when it comes to rules with the Athletics Department.” Up until a few years ago, prospective team members did not have to have a physical done until after they’d made the team. There’s also a sickle cell test; a series of college-athlete deaths related to the condition led to the NCAA instituting mandatory screenings for sickle cell in 2010. “Since everyone has to get it done before trying out, a lot of guys don’t want to get the test and physical done not

knowing if they like cheer or not yet,” Johnson said. “It would help if they get to practice with us first to see if they like it or not, and if they decide to try out then they can go get everything done.” Johnson said there’s more to cheerleading than getting ready for football games. The team also performs at basketball games, volleyball matches, wrestling meets and a long list of other events. Teams go through a lot of preparation to compete at the UCA Collegiate Cheerleading National Championships in Orlando, Florida. It requires staying in shape, as well as maintaining and improving their skills at every practice. Last year the women’s team finished 10th in the Division 1A Finals. Johnson said anyone interested in joining should simply come to a practice. Contact and tryout information is available on the cheer team’s website. You can also direct message the CMU Cheerleader Instagram. The men who are on the team said they like the challenge of cheerleading and the camaraderie of the team. Flint graduate student Aaron Martin-Green, a five-year veteran of the squad, said there were multiple reasons why he joined the team. “Well one, it’s not the typical thing you see from male athletes,” Martin-Green said. “Two, it was something challenging. I used to shy away from things that looked too difficult. I gave it a try and fell in love with it.” Macomb junior Hunter Burns, a brand new addition to the squad, said he wouldn’t be there if it hadn’t been for Martin-Green. “Cheer is like getting adopted by a family,” Burns said. “These people all want to accept you, and teach you, and nurture you and put you in a good place. (Being on the team) takes something as daunting as tossing a human being in the air and makes it as simple as writing your name on paper.”
This weekend, hundreds of Central Michigan University students will be traveling to Kalamazoo for one of the school’s biggest rivalry football games: Western Weekend. Although not all of those students will actually be attending the Sept. 28 football game, Western Michigan University police are still preparing for the upcoming tailgates and partying that will be happening on- and off-campus. With a Saturday game and noon kickoff perfect for tailgating, Kalamazoo-area law enforcement urges Central students to act responsibly for the upcoming rivalry game. The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety plans to double its patrol officers for the football game, adding an additional 20 officers to the 13-20 that regularly patrol the city. “We increase our campus patrol for any big games or events on campus,” said KDPS Lt. Scott Smith. “Obviously at a Central vs. Western game, there is a potential for rivalry so we take into account that with a large amount of alcohol, things can arise. “That doesn’t mean it’s going to, but we make every effort to prevent those things from happening.” WMU Police Department will not be increasing its number of patrol officers this weekend, but the department will receive help from surrounding law enforcement agencies on Saturday, said Chief Scott Merlo. Authorities from Michigan State Police, Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office, City of Portage Police Department and Kalamazoo Township Police Department will assist with policing WMU’s campus for the football game. Although the football game represents a decades-long rivalry between the two schools, Merlo said police see varying amounts of rowdiness each year. “Some years have been worse than others,” he said. WMU and Kalamazoo law enforcement plan to treat this game just like any other big game on Western’s campus. “This game really doesn’t differ from the other big games we have,” Merlo said. “But because of its decent weather and a Saturday, I think we’ll see an increased presence in the tailgate lot.” Smith said that Kalamazoo law enforcement doesn’t plan to treat this football game any differently than any other wellattended event at WMU. Merlo also urged students to behave responsibly for Saturday’s football game and to not let the rivalry get the best of them. “Don’t let a mistake at an event have a negative effect on your life,” he said. “Be smart, be safe, make good decisions. And if you need us, we’ll be here.” Merlo said Lot 105 is the most popular tailgate area for football games. The lots open four hours before football games, meaning tailgate lots will open at 8 a.m. for the noon kickoff. The only place where drinking is allowed on WMU’s campus is in the tailgate lots, Merlo said. Individuals can carry alcohol, but only if the containers are closed. Glass containers, external speakers and animals are not allowed in the tailgate lots.

avid Moore is a member of an impressive fraternity of quarterbacks. He has spent time either working out with or getting to know Deshaun Watson, Kyler Murray, Dwayne Haskins, Joshua Dobbs, Tua Tagovailoa, Jalen Hurts, Justin Fields, Jarrett Stidham, Jacob Eason, Jarren Williams, Emory Jones, Dru Brown, Jordan Yates and Jawon Pass, among others. Moore has also competed against Feleipe Franks, Malik Henry, Jarrett Guarantano and more big-name stars at camps. He once was the focus of a position battle at Denton Guyer High School with U.S. Army All-American Bowl participant and four-star dual-threat quarterback Shawn Robinson. Of course, there are more, but that’s just an insight into the world Moore comes from. He befriended all of those players along the way. “They’re all on this group chat where they all give each other props and encourage each other,” said Michael Moore, David’s father. “He’s grown up around some really good football. I think all of this is a fruit that’s coming fruition now.” Shortly after Tagovailoa and Hurts won the national championship for Alabama in the 2017 season, Moore threw the ball around with Hurts. Stidham, a two-year starter at Auburn, has counseled David on multiple occasions. Dobbs made it a point to take Moore under his wing, and the two still keep in touch on a regular basis. Moore’s quarterback coach in Texas from middle school to early high school was Murray’s father, Kevin. Watson is the starter for the Houston Texans. Murray starts for the Arizona Cardinals. Haskins plays for the Washington Redskins. Dobbs is with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Stidham is the backup for the New England Patriots. Tagovailoa (Alabama), Hurts (Oklahoma), Fields (Ohio State), Eason (Washington), Williams (Miami) and Pass (Louisville) are all starters in college. Jones plays for Florida, while Brown and Yates are at Oklahoma State and Georgia Tech, respectively. David is also a starting quarterback, but it’s not at the NFL or Power Five level. He’s at Central Michigan, a place he never expected to be coming out of Milton High School in Georgia. “I got two years (left),” David said. “This is my last shot at it.” ‘AS GOOD AS THE BEST OF THE BEST’ The journey to Central Michigan has been far from simple. David got his first taste of reputable football at Prosper High School in Texas after
his mother, Kimberly, moved from the Atlanta area to the suburbs of Dallas for work. For the first home game of the season, his father Michael made the trip from Georgia. He said there were nearly 10,000 fans in the stadium. David played JV as a freshman, and he eventually made his way up to the varsity level as a sophomore in 2013. He completed 8-of-9 passes for 198 yards and two touchdowns in limited action. “That was really the first time he was thrown to the wolves, and he did great,” Michael said. “He came in, moved the team and threw some nice passes. The platform wasn’t too big for him.” Transferring to Guyer High School in Denton, Texas, Moore lost the starting job to Robinson, a top-ranked athlete who started seven games in 2018 as TCU’s quarterback before transferring to Missouri. He was honest in his evaluation of the competition. “What’s the talent like there?” Michael asked his son. “I did well, but there’s this other guy here,” David responded, referring to Robinson. “He’s really good.” Four games into the 2014 season, Kimberly moved back to Georgia. David settled in at Milton High School, but he was unable to play that year. That’s when he focused intently on working with Quincy Avery, a quarterback guru that trains high school and college signal callers. David always had a natural passion for football. He wanted to learn from a young age, which is why Avery began working with him as a sophomore in high school. The desire for greatness was proven at every camp David attended. He would find the best quarterback, grow close to him and gauge how he compared. Even when he was invited as an eighth-grader to Football University’s Top Gun Showcase, age didn’t matter. David was there to compete. “I remember he went up for a rep and some other older guy tried to jump in front of him, but he held his ground,” Michael said. “That gave me a sense of his confidence.” Avery had been spending a lot of time in 2014 training Watson and Dobbs. Working with David was frustrating and difficult, the quarterback coach said. The physical talent to play in the NFL was there, and it was obvious. The mental maturity, however, was lacking. “He was as good as anybody I’ve ever seen,” Avery said. “He was one of the most talented players I have ever worked with. I think he can extend his career past CMU. He can play.” Avery’s struggle with David as his trainer led to a “tough conversation” between
the adviser and his 16-year-old prodigy. It wa digest at the time. “I think you’re as good as the best of the b you look up to, but I don’t think you’re where telling David. MOORE | CONTINUED FROM 13 teammates said he was doing well. So, you know, it was frustrating.” David lost the job. “There was some political stuff that got in the mix, and it was uncomfortable,” Michael said. What followed was an impulse decision. David transferred to Garden City Community College, a JUCO program in Kansas. He showed up in Week 2 and led the team to an undefeated regular season and an appearance in the NJCAA football championship. Even though the Broncbusters didn’t throw the ball as much as David would’ve liked, he made the important throws when called upon by his coaching staff. After the season, before David’s departure to CMU, former Garden City coach Jeff Sims made that clear. “There’s no way we go undefeated and get to the national championship without you,” Sims said. Sims compared David to Kentucky quarterback Terry Wilson, who Courtesy Photo | David Moore Quarterback David Moore poses for a photo with his father Micheal Moore after Garden City Community football game.
was at Garden City the year prior. “I love Terry, but David did more things to win football games than Terry did,” Sims said. “If we were having a combine, Terry would probably beat David in the combine. In a game, David made decisions that won the football game.” For example, there were moments when David would run for a first down rather than try to sneak a pass into a tight window for a big gain. He always did his best to protect the football. Wilson wasn’t like that. Wilson relied on his athletic abilities, Sims said, whereas David conformed to what the Garden City coaching staff wanted him to do. “If David Moore does what Central Michigan’s coach wants him to do, they’re going to win football games,” Sims said. The process David went through also goes back to his ability to bet on himself. He didn’t get a single offer until near the end of the JUCO season and often coaches would plan to see him throw and never show up. But he went through that process, bet on himself successfully and ended up with offers to Central Michigan, Texas State, Albany, Northern Iowa, Southern Illinois, Eastern Michigan and East Tennessee State. Of course, he picked the Chippewas. ‘THEY’LL FALL IN LOVE WITH HIM’ David got his first start as a Chippewa against Akron Sept. 14 after an injury to starter Quinten Dormady, a rare double graduate transfer from Houston and Tennessee. A piece of advice Michael has shared with his son since he was a child holds an in-depth meaning: “Luck is when preparation meets opportunity.” David made the most of his opportunity, throwing for 316 yards and two touchdowns. He’s always had the physical abilities to do so, but he’s now added maturity. In his second-career start, David scored the only touchdown for the Chippewas in a 17-12 loss to Miami. He nearly led a comeback victory. “We’ve got total confidence in David,” said firstyear CMU coach Jim McElwain. “Nothing changes in the game plan. He can execute everything that we want from him.” The starter’s entire family was at the game, and they went out to dinner at Texas Roadhouse following the 45-24 victory. It was there his maturity shined brighter than ever. A family of five sat at a table near David’s crew. A young boy, approximately 10 years old, was also at the game. He continuously looked at David throughout the evening meal. On the way out, the boy walked over to David’s table and expressed how happy he was to see such a performance. David put down his fork, turned 45 degrees and took time to engage in a conversation with the fan, who had recently broken his foot in a dirt bike accident. “You’ve got to get back on that bike,” David told him. “You can’t let that beat you. Don’t be afraid. If you want to be a motocross rider, you just have to believe in yourself and your dreams.” The 10-year-old was in awe, David’s father said. “As his dad, that kind of thing speaks to who he is growing into as a man beyond what’s on the football field,” Michael said. “I think there are elements to that which speak to the maturity in a number of contexts.” David’s maturity was also proven to Sims at the JUCO level when he was willing to conform to the team, leaving personal accolades behind. He showcased his newfound maturity to Avery, as well, following fall camp at Central Michigan. “When he didn’t win the starting job, he didn’t pout,” Avery said. “It wasn’t until then that I realized he was mature enough. I knew when he got the job, he’d be successful.” By not showing negativity when being named the backup,
Isaac Ritchey | Senior Reporter Central Michigan quarterback David Moore throws a pass against Akron Sept. 14 at Kelly/Shorts Stadium.
Avery said David was able to gain the trust of his teammates as more than a football player, rather, a true leader. Just ask senior starting linebacker Michael Oliver. “We all knew David could play,” Oliver said. “It didn’t surprise us. It was his opportunity, and he took advantage of it.” ‘RIGHT TIME, RIGHT SITUATION’ Now that David is the starting quarterback for the Chippewas, lofty expectations are sure to follow. The junior can run, throw and fully command the offensive led by coordinator Charlie Frye. However, being able to do something and actually executing it are two different entities. Sims, now the head coach at Missouri Southern State, said it’ll come down to David buying into the plan set in place by first-year coach Jim McElwain. After all, McElwain was one of the main reasons why David picked CMU. “With his background and pedigree with quarterbacks, I feel like this is a great opportunity,” Moore said of McElwain. “I probably would’ve went somewhere else. Coach Mac is a big deal, for sure.” Missing out on an opportunity to start at Memphis, taking the JUCO route and being the No. 2 quarterback out of fall camp are all angles of the game shaped David as a quarterback, teammate and person. As someone that has known David since he was in high school, Avery said those tough moments will pay off this season. “You’ve got someone who is selfless,” Avery said. “He’s going to do whatever it takes, whatever he can to win. He’s as physically gifted as anyone you’ll see.” His father, the man who took David to his first football practice at 6 years old, is proud of his son’s accomplishments regardless of the outcome. But Michael believes David is now fully equipped for the challenge to cement himself as the quarterback of the future for the Chippewas. “It’s been a long journey, and it feels like he’s where he was always meant to be,” Michael said. “It’s the right time, right situation.”

Chippewas head to Kalamazoo to tangle with arch rival Broncos By Austin Chastain Assistant Sports Editor sports@cm-life.com
As the rain and hail fell in Kelly/Shorts Stadium on Oct. 20, 2018, Central Michigan walked off the field with disappointment after losing 35-10 to rival Western Michigan. The Chippewas fell to 1-7 at that point in the season and struggled for the rest of the campaign on their way to the historic 1-11 finish. However, it is a new season, and CMU looks much different when compared to a year ago. As the teams get set to square off at Waldo Stadium on Saturday, there is only one thing that matters: earning the Cannon. VICTORY TROPHY Since 2008, CMU and WMU have played annually for the Victory Cannon, which was established by the student governments of each institution to symbolize the cannons that fire in both Kelly/Shorts Stadium and Waldo Stadium following home team scores. Former CMU wide receiver Corey Willis has arguably one of the biggest plays in recent memory in the rivalry. His 77-yard touchdown catch in 2017 has been etched in history as it capped a run of 21 unanswered points. Willis said the game is the reason players
head to Mount Pleasant to play football. The CMU-WMU battle is the most well-known rivalry in the Mid-American Conference. “It was always a great battle, no matter the record, it’s always a great battle,” Willis said. “I feel like the cannon is a great trophy because no matter what you know you’re in for a 60-minute war.” The Michigan MAC Trophy is up for grabs, too, as CMU, WMU and Eastern Michigan battle for the trophy established by the Michigan Sports Hall of Fame in 2005. The Chippewas sit at 2-2 and 1-0 in the MAC. Meanwhile, the Broncos are 2-2 overall but have yet to play a conference game. WMU is coming off a loss on the road to Syracuse, a game where the visitors looked competitive until the fourth quarter. The Orange pulled away with 14 points in the final quarter. The Broncos are one of the best offensive programs in the conference. They average a MAC-best 38.8 points per game, while CMU averages 23.8 points per game – ranking eighth of 12 teams in the conference. Quarterback Jon Wassink and running back LeVante Bellamy lead the charge for the offensive unit. Coming off injury last season, Wassink has returned and done so in strong fashion. In four
games, Wassink is 81-of-128 (63.3 percent) for 1,222 yards and nine touchdowns. “Their quarterback is well coached,” said first-year coach Jim McElwain. “This guy makes great decisions and gives them opportunities to be successful.” Bellamy has been a force when running the ball for the Broncos, logging 454 yards on 63 carries and six touchdowns. He’s averaged 113.50 yards per game. Against the Orange in the loss last week, Bellamy ran for 165 yards and two scores on 15 carries. “Like anything, we have to keep him in front of us,” McElwain said. “To me, when you have explosive guys like that is doesn’t take much and you’ve got to be so gap sound in everything you do.” The Chippewas are coming off a 17-12 loss against Miami (Florida) in a game that came down to the final drive. Junior quarterback David Moore has been able to either win or put his team in position to take a victory in his two starts under center. “My expectation is that it’s going to be a great environment,” Moore said. “We are looking to go there and win. Personally, working with coach Mac and coach (Charlie) Frye, we’re trying to look at things in a straight line. I need to prepare the same way.
“I’m looking to go down there and win.” Moore is 46-of-92 passing for 534 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. He also has a rushing score. Former tight end Tyler Conklin said that he has been keeping in close contact with guys he played with in his career like Tony Poljan and Jonathan Ward. The current Minnesota Viking has been impressed with what he has seen from the Chippewas this season, even in the loss last week. “I can feel it coming together from people I’ve talked to and what I’ve seen,” Conklin said. “It just seems like we’re heading in the right direction, and I know a lot of alumni are excited about where the program seems to be heading. “It’ll be awesome going into Western Week and how it turns out now that these ones really matter in MAC championship hopes.” WMU currently leads the series, which dates back to 1907, 49-39-2 and 6-5 since the Victory Cannon trophy was established – including six out of the last eight years. “It’s the biggest game of the year,” said WMU coach Tim Lester. “Coach McElwain does a great job offensively of putting players in positions.” The 91st meeting between the Chippewas and Broncos and 12th battle for the Victory Cannon kicks off at noon on Sept. 28 at Waldo Stadium in Kalamazoo.

Football beat writers predict rivalry game Our expectations for CMU’s rivalry game against WMU Austin Chastain
Evan Petzold
Assistant Sports Editor
Sports Editor
Trophies, trash talk, touchdowns and statewide bragging rights are the factors that encompass Central Michigan’s rivalry against Western Michigan. For one week each year, there are no friends – only enemies. The Chippewas (2-2, 1-0 MAC) kick off against the Broncos (2-2) at noon Saturday from Waldo Stadium in Kalamazoo. The rivalry is the only way to secure the Victory Cannon Trophy, and it puts the winner out front for the Michigan MAC Trophy, given to Central, Western or Eastern Michigan. With that said, these are the top storylines and expectations from sports editor Evan Petzold and assistant sports editor Austin Chastain. What’s the biggest mismatch for the Chippewas? Petzold: Without a doubt, the mismatch CMU needs to take advantage of is through attacking WMU’s secondary, which has been weakened by the loss of cornerback D’Wayne Eskridge. Besides Kalil Pimpleton and Tyrone Scott, there hasn’t been consistent production from the Chippewa receivers. Expect more players to touch the ball and tons of passes to be thrown. Chastain: The WMU defensive line is strong, one of the best in the Mid-American Conference, but the defensive backs seem to be lacking. Getting running backs in space to challenge the Bronco secondary will be necessary for CMU. What does CMU have to do to win? Petzold: Plain and simple, the Chippewas need to slow down WMU’s offense, led by quarterback Jon Wassink and running back LeVante Bellamy. Both are seniors and considered the best in the MAC at their positions. It’s no easy task, but CMU needs to step up on defense against a high-powered attack.
Chastain: CMU needs to slow down Bellamy and wrap up well when tackling him. The WMU offense is good, so slowing it down will play paramount for the Chippewas. Offensively, CMU needs to not be intimidated and play like it has the last two weeks with David Moore under center. How will David Moore play in his first college rivalry game? Petzold: There’s a lot of pressure, but I think he understands what the game means to the fans, community, alumni and the rest of his squad. After the way he played against the Hurricanes, I expect him to hold the offense together like glue. Chastain: I think Moore gets it, he knows how important these kinds of games are and I believe he will go out and take control of the offense in a hurry. A standout play early on in the game would be exactly what the Chippewas need. What will be the deciding factor? Petzold: Western Michigan’s offensive line. The Broncos have to protect Wassink, give him time in the pocket and let him make the throws he’s capable of converting. If that’s not the case, WMU will quickly become a one-dimensional offense. Chastain: Central Michigan’s offensive line. Moore got beat up last week against the Hurricanes, but he was still able to make plays when he needed to. He also fumbled the ball twice, which cut drives short near the end zone. If the Chips up front can protect Moore, like they did against Akron, they can have another strong offensive performance against the weak WMU secondary. Score prediction? Petzold: Western Michigan 42, Central Michigan 30 Chastain: Central Michigan 34, Western Michigan 27
Loss to Chippewas would be devastating for WMU
Seth Berry
Western Herald
Western Michigan football came into the 2019 season with high expectations. They were picked by the media to finish second in the Mid-American Conference preseason poll, mainly due to the experience the Broncos have on both sides of the ball. Heading into Mid-American Conference play on Saturday, those expectations haven’t changed. The Western Michigan Broncos are 2-2 with two blowout home wins over opponents they were much better than. The Broncos’ two losses both came on the road against the Big Ten’s Michigan State Spartans and Syracuse from the ACC. Previous games Western Michigan moved the ball well against the Spartans but missed several scoring opportunities while the defense was carved up. And against Syracuse last weekend, Western Michigan found themselves down just five points heading into the fourth quarter, but mistakes early on and allowing big plays on defense came back to cost them. Losing two-way player D’Wayne Eskridge, a cornerback and wide reciever, in the first quarter certainly didn’t help things, as it has been announced that he will miss the rest of the season with a broken collarbone. He is one of Western’s most dynamic players and is arguably their best cover corner as he made the transition to take most of his reps at defense this season. Still, even with the loss of Eskridge, the Broncos enter Mid-American
Conference play in a good place. They are about where everyone expected them to be, and we seem to know who they are. They have one of the most explosive offenses in the conference led by senior starting quarterback Jon Wassink and senior running back LeVante Bellamy but they have a shaky, inconsistent defense. However, the outlook of Western Michigan’s season would drastically change with a loss to Central Michigan this weekend. The Broncos enter as an 18-point favorite over the Chippewa team that is down to their backup starting quarterback and running back. Being at home and against a program that is rebuilding, it is an absolute must-win game for third-year coach Tim Lester’s team. Chips showing improvement The Chippewas, however, have shown plenty of signs of improvement. Junior quarterback David Moore has been formidable since graduate transfer quarterback Quinten Dormady went down with the injury, and their defense showed signs of life against the Miami Hurricanes, where CMU lost by just five on the road. Defensive lineman Sean Adesanya recorded two sacks in that game and has been a force all season long. With that being said, I don’t see Western Michigan losing this game at home. It can’t happen if they want a chance to win the MAC for the first time under Lester. It especially can’t happen against the Chippewa team that is improving, yet not fully established. Predictions I see Central Michigan coming into Waldo Stadium and staying competitive, but in the end, I think Western Michigan’s balance on offense is just too much for CMU’s defense to hold up against.

Davis gets extension through 2023-2024 By Evan Petzold Sports Editor sports@cm-life.com
Central Michigan men’s basketball coach Keno Davis is sticking around the program for the next five years. Davis agreed to an extension that pays him a base salary of $319,923 per year, and it will expire 10 days after the final game of the 2023-24 season, as detailed in his contract obtained by Central Michigan Life. The eighth-year head coach’s contract was originally set to expire following the 2019-20 campaign with a $300,000 base salary. He gets a $19,923 raise. Now, CMU Athletic Director Michael Alford has placed Davis in charge of the Chippewas for five more seasons. Davis will make $100,000 in a bonus per season for television, radio and promotional appearances, just as he did with his prior contract. Regardless of the success of the team, Davis is set to make a total of $419,923 for each season over the next five years. Under Davis, who has been the coach since the 2012-13 campaign, the Chippewas have never won the Mid-American Conference Tournament championship nor have they made the NCAA Tournament. In his seven full seasons, Davis is 121-109 (.543) overall and 52-72 (.419) in the MAC. Davis’ top season was in 2014-15 when the Chippewas were 23-9 overall and 12-6 in the conference.
The team finished first in the MAC West Division but didn’t win the conference tournament. The 47-year-old has coached in four postseason events – the 2015 NIT (first round loss), 2016 CIT (first round loss), 2018 CIT (quarterfinal loss) and 2019 CBI (first round loss). Here are the other ways Davis can make additional cash each season with his new deal: • CMU has a winning record: $7,500. • CMU wins 20 or more games: $10,000. • CMU is the Mid-American Conference West Division regular season champion: $10,000. • Davis is named MAC Coach of the Year or NABC Coach of the Year: $10,000. • If CMU wins the MAC Tournament title or regular season championship, Davis will earn $10,000. If the Chippewas take both the tournament and regular season crown, Davis will get one payment of $15,000. • If CMU makes the NCAA Tournament, Davis will receive an extra $10,000. He would earn bonuses for each win in the tournament. • CMU participates in the National Invitational Tournament (NIT): $7,500. • CMU has an NCAA single-year Academic Progress Rate (APR) above 985: $10,000. • CMU’s average paid attendance exceeds 2,500 for a specific season: $5,000. • For each home men’s basketball game that is sold out in a specific season: $2,500. If Davis is terminated without cause, the university’s buy-out is $1 million (2019-20), $500,000 (2020-21), $400,000 (2021-22), $300,000 (202223) and $200,000 (2023-24).
Antonio Brown is officially enrolled at Central Michigan University. Director of University Communications Heather Smith confirmed to Central Michigan Life that Brown is enrolled in online classes for the Fall 2019 semester. “I can confirm that Antonio Brown is currently enrolled in online degree completion coursework at Central Michigan University,” Smith said. “He does not attend classes on a CMU campus. His online courses began last week.” Brown left CMU in 2009 and has not yet earned a Bachelor’s degree. On Monday, the former Chippewa wide receiver posted his class schedule on Instagram showing that he is taking four classes that account for 12 credits. Brown is taking Introduction to
Management (MGT 312), Technical Writing (ENG 303WI), Death and Dying (REL 334WI) and Racism and Inequality (SOC 323). Earlier Monday, Registrar Keith Malkowski refused to provide Central Michigan Life directory information about Brown. Malkowski said any inquiries about Brown had to come from University Communications. Basic directory information is available to anyone through FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act). From 2007-09, Brown was a studentathlete at CMU, but he left school early to enter the 2010 NFL Draft. He was selected in the sixth round (195th overall) by the Pittsburgh Steelers. -Evan Petzold, Sports Editor
TRIO OF VOLLEYBALL ATHLETES EARN MAC WEST PLAYER OF THE WEEK HONORS It was a very successful weekend for Central Michigan volleyball. The team improved their record to 10-2 with a 3-0 performance at the Youngstown State Red & White Invitational, and Kalina Smith was recognized with tournament MVP. Three other Chippewas were recognized for their performance by the Mid-American Conference. Megan Kern, a senior libero from La Grange, Illinois, was named MAC West Defensive Player of the Week. Over the weekend, Kern totaled 78 digs over three matches. “Meg has been a defensive staple for our program all four years of her career,” said coach Mike Gawlik. “It’s great to see her hard work recognized.” Two Chippewas also earned CoSetter of the Week honors. The award is split between junior Grace Butler and sophomore Kendall Braate. Braate, who hails from Byron Center, Michigan, had 70 assists.
Butler, a native of Hawthorn Woods, Illinois, had 53. It is the first time either has won the award this season. “Grace and Kendall have been doing a great job of making good decisions and bettering the ball to put us in a position to attack,” said Gawlik of his two setters. “When your first KERN: Senior libero was named contact (Kern) and MAC West Desecond contact fensive Player of (Butler and Braate) the Week are good, it’s likely your team will find success,” said Gawlik. The Chippewas next take the court Sept. 27 at Northern Illinois. -Christian Booher Staff Reporter

BATTLE FOR THE
CANNON Current and former football players discuss importance, prestige of Central-Western rivalry game
C
orey Willis lined up on the left side of the offensive formation with 2:47 to play on Nov. 1, 2017. He moved inside and caught a Shane Morris thrown ball almost right at midfield in one-on-one coverage and sprinted to the southwest end zone at Waldo Stadium. The score capped a run of 21-unanswered points in the fourth quarter as Central Michigan won 35-28 and brought home the Victory Cannon. The catch was not Willis’ favorite memory of the rivalry. However, it was part of it. “That whole second half was magical,” Willis said. The most inspiring part for him was wearing the jersey number of his best friend during his time at Central Michigan. No. 21 – Derrick Nash. Nash died in 2015 at the age of 20 following a battle with leukemia. After his death, former coach John Bonamego selected one player – usually the “player of the game” the week before – to wear the 21 jersey in Nash’s honor. Willis said making one of the biggest plays of his life wearing his best friend’s jersey is a moment he is proud of. “I just think it was an awesome feeling, playing CMU football and understanding the tradition that goes with it,” Willis said. “When I came to CMU, I was just trying to find a way to be remembered, figure out a way to have a lasting impression on this university and I feel like the easiest way to do that is in the Western rivalry.” The Victory Cannon, first introduced in 2008, was established by the student government associations at Central and Western Michigan. Western Michigan leads the series, which began in 1907, 49-39-2. The Chippewas won the Cannon first with a 38-28 win over WMU. The Broncos won the game last year, 35-10 in Mount Pleasant and took the Cannon back to Kalamazoo. Quarterback Dan LeFevour was a member of the 2008 team that won the trophy for the first time. However, he did not play due to injury. He said the rivalry was great, even before the Cannon was introduced. “It meant a lot,” LeFevour said. “The emotion was super high, the stadium was always packed. Both fan bases were super into it and it was just super fun to play in it, lots of energy. Every year was special, and it is something that I’ll remember for a very long time.” When fans and friends ask him, the former quarterback often struggles to describe the feeling of stepping on the field for the rivalry. “If I’m not on the football field and just watching the game from home, I don’t get as fired up as I did when I
was playing,” LeFevour said. “But when I step on that field, especially for a Central-Western game, you can just feel the energy and feel the intensity (it) just feels a little bit different.” Tyler Conklin, a former tight end, said he did not know much about the rivalry until he played in it. But when he did, it became a memory he’d never forget. “It’s everything,” Conklin said. “You lose, you have to watch the other team grab it in your home stadium and be happy. It hurts.” Conklin and Willis, both seniors in 2017, wanted to leave an impact on the year, the program and rivalry. “Western was talking crap the whole game,” Conklin said. “All of a sudden, after the game, we were holding that trophy. “Just holding up that trophy as a team in their home stadium and watching them walk off in disappointment — that’s the big thing.” Willis said he’s in the same boat as Conklin. “It’s the ultimate trophy you can have,” Willis said. Steve Eipper is one of those guys that had to endure losing the Cannon on home turf last season. The senior center has one mission heading into his final appearance against the Broncos. Bring home the Cannon. “Losing last year, we had some troubles, but that game hurt a little bit more because it was Western and losing that trophy really sucked,” Eipper said. “So, going down there and winning that trophy back is important.” The stakes are always higher. “We don’t like each other that much, and there’s a lot of emotion,” Eipper said. “This is a really important game for us to get.”

SUPPORT OUR
CHIPPEWAS EDITORIAL It’s almost Western Weekend. The biggest football game of the season is fast approaching, and though it’s not in Mount Pleasant this year, it still should be one of the most important weekends of the year for Central Michigan University students. Our storied rivalry against the Western Michigan University Broncos is one of very few in the state. The only other game that compares is Michigan vs. Michigan State, simply because Ohio State pounces the Wolverines each year. This CMU football team is worth watching. After an expected drubbing against Wisconsin, one of the best teams in the nation, CMU’s quarterback situation was upgraded. An injury to starter Quinten Dormady gave David Moore the starting nod. Under Moore’s leadership, the Chippewas started conference play 1-0 with a win against Akron, in which he threw 316 yards and two touchdowns. He played a sharp, clean game and didn’t cause a single turnover. In last week’s loss against Miami, Moore showed courage and composure despite throwing an interception on
the last drive. He was constantly under pressure and took some significant hits in the backfield — but he never gave up. Moore finished with 217 yards and one interception. If the Chippewas keep the heart and determination that they showed in the 17-12 loss to Miami last week, we should fare pretty well in Mid-American Conference play. The Chippewas aren’t favored in this matchup. Star running back Levante Bellamy and starting quarterback Jon Wassink both returned to this year’s roster. They are 2-2 overall, with losses against ranked Michigan State and Syracuse. In the games they have won, against Monmouth and Georgia State, they have scored a combined 105 points. The Broncos won’t make it easy. However, that’s what’s special about a rivalry game. No matter who is favored or who looks better on paper, anything can happen. If you are going to one away football game this season, make it this one. And for all of those Chippewas that cannot make the trip, show your support.

More than 30 students gathered to join the Global Climate Strike outside the Bovee University Center on Friday, Sept. 20.
Climate strike is not a solution, but a necessary step I covered the CMU climate strike on Sept. 20. I listened to a speaker drone on about charts and graphs relating to rising global temperatures. I watched small groups speak passionately about the planet to the few interested attendees. And I walked alongside chanting demonstrators in the late September heat. As the social media comments have pointed out on my coverage story, this movement, like all movements, has its flaws. Climate change is real and it is an imminent issue that needs to be addressed, but I’m not here to argue that. Regardless of whether or not you believe climate change even exists, our resources are limited and our current rate of consumption, with an increasing population, will not sustain us. The answer to this is not a purge, as one comment proposes, or doing absolutely nothing, as most of the comments suggest, rather the answer is reducing our dependence on fossil fuels and investing in renewable
Teresa Homsi Columnist sources of energy. This means implementing policies and regulations. To some, this equates to “anti-American socialism” or giving up our God-given right to use plastic straws. However, in this great nation, we shouldn’t have to fear a slippery slope – so long as we remember our democracy. Our problems are complicated, and our solutions are even more convoluted. I, like most people, rely on fossil fuels. I indulge in air conditioning, I drive a non-electric car, I use a laptop and phone, I purchase “manufactured fast food” and I do a host of other things that probably aren’t good for the environment. I also recycle, use reusable containers,
turn the lights off when I don’t need them and walk everywhere as often as I can. Very few people are able to fully commit to a cause. We make mistakes and we all live messy, complicated lives full of contradictions. This does not mean we should sit idly by when we know our world is becoming more unlivable with every passing day. I came into the teach-in feeling doubtful, thinking ‘what good will this do?’ Whatever cynicism I carried melted away the moment I spoke to Marie Koper of the Mount Pleasant Citizens’ Climate Lobby. She is a grandmother dedicating her retirement to promote bipartisan investment in clean energy. “I have the old-fashioned value that we should leave the world better than we found it, not worse,” Koper said. “It was very clear that our environment and climate is in danger. I have grandchildren, and I’ve had the benefit of enjoying a long life on
a beautiful planet that’s just right for us and is fascinating and gorgeous. The thought of leaving a threatened planet to my grandchildren just gives me goosebumps.” It seems to me that a lot of people skipped over that quote when reading my story and going to the comment section to complain about millenials (and others) caring about the planet. Movements are not perfect, but neither are solutions – and we can all agree that we need a good deal of those. That’s what we’re here to do: improve. Activist and Rev. Andrea Ayvazian said it better than I could ever: “If we obsess about looking good instead of doing good, we will get caught in a spiral of ineffective action. Let’s not get side-tracked or defeated because we are trying to be perfect. And so we move ahead, pushing ourselves forward on our growing edge.” Teresa Homsi is a sophomore who is studying Journalism from Houston, Texas.
