Ranzenberger sentenced to 14 to 45 years for child rape By Johnathan Hogan Staff Reporter news@cm-life.com
Former Central Michigan University faculty member Mark Ranzenberger was sentenced for sexually assaulting a child. Judge Mark Duthie ordered Ranzenberger to serve a sentence of 14 to 45 years in prison in Isabella County Trial Court Thursday. After serving 14 years, Ranzenberger will face a parole board that will decide if his sentence should be extended. Ranzenberger’s county court sentence will be served concurrently with his federal court sentence of 14 years for possession of child pornography. Duthie condemned the defendant for the rapes he committed. The judge said he thought Ranzenberger should spend the
rest of his life in prison. “This is one of the worst (criminal sexual conduct) cases I’ve seen since I’ve been here,” Duthie said. As part of the plea agreement, three of the four criminal sexual conduct charges were dropped. Both the person Ranzenberger assaulted and Chief Assistant Prosecutor Robert Holmes said Ranzenberger should serve more time. However, Holmes requested Duthie issue a sentence within the guidelines set by the plea agreement. The person appeared during the sentencing and read a statement to Ranzenberger and the court. The individual responded to Ranzenberger’s apology during the federal sentencing on Jan. 19. “How can you forgive someone who spent seven years raping you?” the person said. “I feel sick every time I see his face

on my Facebook feed.” The person mentioned the grooming document found in Ranzenberger’s office at CMU, saying they were unsure if the document had been shared with other child molesters. The document detailed how to “groom” a child from birth to age 11 to make them more receptive to sex acts.

The person also said investigators asked if Ranzenberger had a camera during the assaults. The person was again unsure and didn’t know if they were included among pictures found on confiscated storage devices. Duthie said the grooming document was unusual, and Ranzenberger would likely become
a case study in how pedophiles groom children. “I’ve never seen grooming perpetrated in the manner it was in your case,” the judge said. Ranzenberger also gave a statement to Duthie, saying he could never make up for his crimes. “Just hearing the words ‘I’m sorry,’ it’s not enough,” he said. “I wish there was some way I could make this up.” Ranzenberger was investigated by CMU police after accidentally displaying pornographic thumbnails to a class in March. In September, he admitted during a plea hearing in U.S. District Court to sexually assaulting a child several times over seven years. He was charged with sexual assault in October. A U.S. Secret Service criminal complaint filed May 19 states Ranzenberger admitted to CMUPD Sgt. Mike Morrow that

he obtained the pornographic images from a German website between 2004 and 2008. Ranzenberger said he saved multiple PowerPoint files containing pornographic images into his Dropbox cloud storage account. The complaint said out of the 1,032 photos obtained, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children logged that 86 of the images had identifiable endangered children in them. The NCMEC had logged 502 of the photos from previous investigations. Ranzenberger resigned from CMU and the Mount Pleasant Planning Commission in March. A CMU alumnus, Ranzenberger taught journalism and broadcast and cinematic arts classes at CMU since 1999. He previously worked at the Midland Daily News, Huron Daily Tribune and The Morning Sun.

Faculty, students feel empowered after March on Washington By Sarah Wolpoff News Editor news@cm-life.com
After meeting an elderly couple from southern Michigan at the Women’s March on Washington, Shelly Hinck felt inspired by the significance of the protest that resonated with everyone, regardless of age. Hinck, a communications professor at Central Michigan University, said her involvement with the march in Washington D.C. on Jan. 21 was a life-changing experience. “The marchers were positive,” Hinck said. “Now we’re ready to come back and continue the cause.” Hinck was among several faculty members and students from CMU who journeyed more than 600 miles to join more than
500,000 in the Women’s March on Washington. From the moment they left Michigan early Friday morning, the university affiliates immediately felt a connection with the magnitude of protesters across the country. “At every rest stop, there were women wearing pink hats,” said Lesley Withers, a communications professor. “Even though we weren’t wearing the hats, there were women who asked if we were going to the march.” “We were in Ohio, and these women cheered and high-fived us in the middle of the parking lot,” she continued. “Just that feeling of being a part of such an exciting and important event was really inspiring.” On the day of the march, the group left their hotel room in Baltimore at 6 a.m. to embark on a seven-hour expedition to Wash-

ington D.C. Withers said they were among the countless marchers who were delayed by transit services due to massive crowds. But because the metro was filled with women and support-

ers all waiting to go to the march, Withers said a sense of unity was established before they even entered the city. “At all of these metro stations around the outskirts of the city — the march continued until we were able to get there in person,” she said. They finally made it into the capital at around 1 p.m., right when the protesters started marching. Although the crowd was made up of travelers from across the country, it wasn’t long before the group heard a familiar tune. Withers recalled seeing a woman standing on the side of the street playing a tuba with a sign placed above her head displaying an outline of Michigan. The women were excited to hear CMU’s fight song coming from the
horn and yelled “Fire up chips!” Withers also identified familiar faces in the sea of people, and had the opportunity to meet actress Rosario Dawson after realizing they’d been marching side-by-side. “It was very cool to see so many people from different walks of life and experiences coming together,” she said. “There was a strong sense of unity and collaboration for something bigger than ourselves.” Mount Pleasant senior Ashley Howell traveled to the march with the faculty members. She said going to the Women’s March and being surrounded by so many dedicated people was an empowering and emotional experience. “You get teary eyed seeing how many people are fighting for equality, especially (because) it can
be isolating to feel we are moving backwards (as a progressive nation),” Howell said. Hinck said the intergenerational message was clear at the Women’s March. She was moved by the cross-generational connectedness she witnessed not only in the crowd but also personally. Hinck marched with both of her daughters — one who teaches in Ohio and the other who’s currently in graduate school in New York. “I started taking my daughters to Take Back the Night marches when they were 5 years old,” Hinck said. “The fact we’re continuing our commitment to ensure that equality is not forgotten is something that’s important to all of us.” The diverse crowd of marchers — of different ages, races and ethnicities — all committed to making their voices heard, demonstrated a powerful illustration of democracy, she said. Withers added going to the march was an important exercise in using her voice to impact the democratic system. She valued being able to partake in something she knew would be historic. “I wanted to make sure this new administration understands the importance and value of listening to everyone’s voice,” she said. “I think in order to do that you have to participate. That’s what democracy is — everyone being heard. If I’m not there offering up my voice, then I really shouldn’t complain about not being heard.”

Student meets President Trump, receives autographed poster By Dylan Goetz Staff Reporter news@cm-life.com
While watching the inauguration, one Central Michigan University student could probably recall a better story about the 45th U.S. president than you. After waiting six hours at the Wexford Civic Center in Cadillac in March, Kevin Goodwin finally saw President Donald Trump in person during his campaign tour. Goodwin is a CMU freshman planning to major in finance. A risk manager in his fraternity, Beta Theta Pi, Goodwin uses his free time to go out with friends, play video games and toss around a baseball. More importantly, the Traverse City native may be the only student on CMU’s campus who has had face-to-face interaction with Trump. “My friend and I got there early that morning to get in the front row,” Goodwin said. “Donald walked by us and said ‘You’re a couple of good looking guys. You’ll be looking for my position in a couple of years.’” After a six-hour wait, Goodwin and his friends earned a spot in the front row of the Trump rally. Trump came up to them, signed their posters and gave them a compliment before speaking in front of thousands. Central Michigan Life sat down with Goodwin to talk about his experience and views on Presi-
dent Trump. CM Life: What sets other candidates apart from Trump? GOODWIN: I think he represents the working class well, but at the same time he is a businessman. That is what he does and what he has been doing his whole life. He’s not political, and I think that’s going to be beneficial in this upcoming term. Why do you think a lot of people aren’t fans of Trump? I think people hear one thing and they want to agree with everyone else. When you ask people why they do not like Trump, they say, “Well, he’s Donald Trump.” I think if they took more time educate themselves of the candidates, they would find something different. What do you think bothers people about Trump? I don’t know what I can say about other people’s views, but what I have heard a lot is people calling him racist, misogynistic, homophobic — whatever they may say. At the end of the day, people think what they want and you can’t change that so if you don’t like him, it’s on you. There’s nothing you can do about it because he is our president. What was the Trump rally like? I woke up at 5 a.m. A few buddies and I took a car to Cadillac and got in line at 7 a.m. The doors didn’t open until 10 a.m., and we were still around 20th in
line. I heard from somewhere the line was a mile long. After we got checked in, we had to wait inside for another three hours. (Trump) didn’t come until (1 p.m.). Since I was up at (5 a.m.), it was an investment and I was ready to see the man. As soon as he came out, everyone just lit up. But the atmosphere from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. was like everyone was kind of (mad) because they were playing the same eight songs over and over. When he finally came on, it was something else. When did you get interested in politics? This being the first election that I could vote in, I did a lot more research. I have been a lot more involved in the presidential election process. Do you ever see any negative reactions when you show your support for Trump? There have been a few times that I have been wearing a Trump shirt probably at the wrong time. I wore it to high school a few times and it was mostly the “verbal minority,” which is all talk and (is just) for their people, but the people that confronted me couldn’t even vote in the election. Do you think Trump will keep the promises that he made during his campaign? I sure hope so. Trump has promised a wall, and I would love to see a wall. I think it would be very beneficial, contrary to

what a lot of people had to say. In the rally, he talked about how many drugs were coming into the United States each day. The benefit of a wall would overcome a lot of the negativity that is coming through our borders. My problem is with the illegal immigrants — not immigrants who came to America legally. I am a big fan of the American dream. You come over here legally, make your money and contribute to society, you are good on my watch. What about Obamacare? Having my father in the health care field, I think I have been exposed to more of the downfall that came with Obamacare — the negative impacts that it had on the medical field in general. My dad owns a private practice so he is another option for people who are looking for treatment. How about Trump’s social

media activity? He has a short temper — I think people poke at him and he reacts to that. We saw that a lot in the debates with Hillary. She would just say something short and he would come back with a defensive strategy.
His social media is a little iffy for me. He runs his own accounts as you can tell. That is good to me because it says that he is a person too. While he is a politician, he is just like any of us — he has opinions and he is not afraid to defend himself.

New police chief brings 20 years of experience By Greg Horner News Editor news@cm-life.com
The Mount Pleasant police department’s new police chief and director of public safety was born into law enforcement. The son of a district court magistrate and brother of three police officers, Paul Lauria has spent 20 years as a Mount Pleasant as police officer. At a young age, he set his sights on being a police chief. In February, he’ll accomplish that goal. Lauria will take over following Chief Glenn Feldhauser’s retirement on Feb. 24. City Manager Nancy Ridley said Lauria is working side-byside with Feldhauser to ensure a smooth transition. “(Lauria) has the ability to develop community partnerships (and) is committed to listening and being involved with the community, to make sure public safety is meeting the needs of the community,” Ridley said. Like many of his fellow officers, Lauria started out in law enforcement because he wanted to do good and “catch bad guys.” But his priorities changed early on in his career. “At some point (you ask) how do I make a bigger impact?” Lauria said. “For me it was moving up the ladder and into a position where I can take everything I’ve
learned and put a stamp on the city and community.” As director of public safety, Lauria will be in charge of 29 police officers along with 12 full-time and 16 part-time firefighters. Coming from law enforcement, Lauria said he has plenty to learn about operating a fire department. “Obviously I won’t be the one going out and fighting the fires,” he said. “What I have to know is how to make sure our men and women have the training, knowledge and tools to do their job.” Executive Director of Student Affairs Shaun Holtgreive served on the panel that helped select the new chief. He said it was an easy choice to make. “He understands that because he’s director of public safety, not the chief of police or the chief of the fire department, (he) has to be able to work with both entities and understand both sides of that business,” Holtgreive said. Mount Pleasant is unique, Lauria said. There’s a well-educated, diverse and multicultural community, but that doesn’t do it justice. “You tell me another community that is rural in nature, has a major university and a major, federally recognized American Indian reservation,” he said. “You need to be able to help and understand everybody.” Lauria wants the department to reach out to everyone in the
Mount Pleasant community. His goal is to make people comfortable reaching out to the police — whether they’re in need of help or not. “I want there to be an open door policy,” he said. “I’m bound to make mistakes. I am bound to miss certain groups. But that doesn’t mean I don’t care about them or am not willing to listen because I certainly am.” Some students might be frustrated with police following the recent “crack down” on student behavior, Lauria said. He isn’t “passing the buck,” but he added the police are tasked by the city, and the desire of residents, to enforce the law. Lauria said he’s made plenty of mistakes in his life and doesn’t think he’s better than anyone else. He doesn’t want anyone to call him director — he wants people to see him as Paul. Police understand that students want to enjoy “the college experience,” but there has to be a balance, Lauria said. “Collectively, we’re hoping there becomes a more acceptable environment for everyone,” he said. “I’ve learned the hard way in my personal life, and maybe in my professional life, the importance of keeping balance — it exists for officers too.” The most important aspect an officer has to balance is empathy, he said.

Looking at the world in blackand-white terms is easy, but it’s harder to look at the world from another person’s viewpoint, Lauria said. He pointed to the recent increase in heroin use as an example. “Do you think that’s just the dirty, rotten criminals that are
getting addicted?” He asked. “It’s not. It is nondiscriminatory and affects everyone from the bottom to the famous. (Having empathy) doesn’t mean there isn’t accountability, but empathy can go a long way to understanding that there’s
more to the world than just right and wrong.” He wants his officers to share his sense of empathy and humility. “I’m asking my officers to always keep in mind the humanity of the person they’re dealing with,” he said.

lack of funding for the
future
Funding must be restored to higher education as Snyder’s final term concludes.
G
ov. Rick Snyder and Lansing lawmakers plan to unveil the state’s proposed 2017 budget soon. Based on Snyder’s past proposals, Michigan’s budget will most likely focus on programs and initiatives that support economic growth, higher wages and a sustainable job market. What we most likely won’t see is a major increase in state funding for Central Michigan University, or any other public university. Rising tuition costs and crippling student debt directly correlate to decreases in state funding for higher education. It’s a budgetary shell game Michigan college students can no longer afford to play. Snyder — in all his overtures on Michigan’s
future — has consistently neglected higher education funding since he took office. In 2010, he and other lawmakers gutted overall education spending by $930.6 million. While Snyder slowly restored funding over the past seven years, money for higher education remains lower than it was in 2011. Before he leaves office, Snyder must make higher education his No. 1 priority. The governor must increase appropriations for state universities, and, at the very least, boost funding to the level inherited in 2010. Our ability to afford college in the state depends on it. Last year, CMU’s Board of Trustees increased tuition for in-state students to $405 per credit hour. Following Snyder’s first
year as governor, that number was $346 per credit hour. For full-time students taking 12 credits worth of classes, that’s an increase of $708. Each of these tuition hikes was a direct result of Michigan’s cuts to higher education. Unless Snyder works to increase state funding, CMU’s tuition will undoubtedly continue to climb. At some point, no student from a family of reasonable means will be able to afford attending a small public college like CMU without taking on large amounts of student debt. In his most recent State of the State address, Snyder touted his efforts to bring Michigan’s economy back from the brink. Overall, state revenues are increasing. There are more jobs for new graduates, and the state’s expansion
of Medicare and Medicaid helped push an economic boom. With new and vast resources at his disposal, it is shameful if Snyder yet again refuses to increase university aid. If state funding is not increased, it will run counter to his musings about “the best and brightest minds” choosing Michigan colleges over our competitors in other states. Snyder said he is convinced that graduates from these schools want to stay, work and live in Michigan. It’s time for our governor to put his assumptions to the test by making college affordable again. It’s time for Snyder to put his money — quite literally — where his mouth is.

President Obama’s lasting anti-press legacy must not be overlooked Former President Barack Obama will be sure to highlight his legacy in the coming months. Many Americans will applaud his efforts for furthering the cause of LGTBQ+ equality, labor unions and other minorities’ civil rights. Many will point to the success of his economic recovery plan and foreign policy gains. While one act might stand out as his greatest contribution, all of them are towering accomplishments. There is, however, one piece of his legacy that Obama should stand up and recognize: his immensely dangerous war against American freedom of the press. The Obama administration systematically destroyed many paths for journalists and the American public to access damning information. He stifled government employees and even dragged journalists to court over access issues.
Elio Stante Columnist
An initiative known as the “Insider Threat Program” was issued to all federal agencies during the Obama administration. Basically, it is an agency informant program, designed to identify potential whistleblowers. Government documents obtained by McClatchy newspapers show federal agencies created programs to train employees to watch for “high-risks persons and behaviors” that could result in the leaking of information. They also required employees to report those people to their supervisors. These government documents
encourage agencies to revoke security clearances for suspected whistleblowers. An obtained Department of Defense memo said, “Hammer this fact home… leaking is tantamount to aiding the enemies of the United States.” This was clear in the case against Chelsea Manning, before her sentence was commuted by Obama this month. It is also evident in the current pursuit of extradition for Edward Snowden. The program put forth by Obama has dangerous potential for creating a toxic, fearful environment for all government employees. Supervisors can now use this as a way to retaliate against those that may be trying to expose abuses of power within government agencies. Due to the “Insider Threat Program” and the fear of prosecution, a person could easily be deterred from going public with

take or provide a headshot. Guest columns cannot be authored by more than one person. How long can letters to the editor or guest columns be? Letters to the editor are typically a maximum of 500 words. Letters that are longer than 500 words are dealt with on a case-by-case basis and published at the discretion of the opinion editor, managing editor and editor-in-chief. In most cases, Guest columns can be a maximum of 650 words. Does Central Michigan Life edit letters to the editor or guest columns? important information. Imagine if FBI Agent Mark Felt was scared or threatened and the revelations of the Watergate Scandal were never exposed. Similar revelations are being kept under lock and key due to the same fear of retaliation. Prosecution of the American press may also stop whistleblowers from ever reaching out to journalists. Beyond trying to silence employees, the Obama administration has aggressively challenged journalists in court to make them reveal their confidential sources. In 2014, the Obama administration won a legal battle against New York Times journalist James Risen, in which the fourth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals rejected that journalists have a privilege that protects them from being forced to testify about their sources in criminal cases.
Risen appealed the ruling to the U.S. Supreme Court, but his appeal was rejected. This ruling in circuit court has dangerous implications. The court’s authority covers Virginia and Maryland, home to the Pentagon and Central Intelligence Agency, meaning that in later trials, journalists may be forced to give up their sources under fear of jail time. Obama made silencing whistleblowers and information leakers one of his top priorities at the expense of American liberties and freedoms. From prosecuting whistleblowers, forming snitch programs and attacking journalists’ rights, Obama created a dangerous precedent. If President Trump attacks and jails a journalist for doing their job in the same manner, that will be Obama’s fault and quite possibly the most impactful piece of his legacy.

sibs for the weekend Family members visit campus, take advantage of activities with big brothers and sisters By Evan Sasiela, Haley Les and Sarah Clinkscales News Editor and Staff Reporters news@cm-life.com

Melanie Muir, better known as Patty Cake, flipped hot pancakes to people waiting in line at the Sibling’s Weekend Pancake Breakfast on Saturday at Finch Fieldhouse. Muir has been to every Sibling’s Weekend for the last 10 years and said the best part of the event is seeing kids reconnect with their college siblings while visiting the university. Sibling’s Weekend took place Friday through Sunday at Central Michigan University. The event, which began in 1963, sees about 2,000 family members visiting each year. The event invites family members and siblings to CMU for three days of activities — including rock climbing, laser tag, sports clinics and a carnival. The films “Zootopia,” “Moana” and “Jurassic World” were shown throughout.
Chris Cakes of Michigan, a pancake company “with an attitude” located in Clare, is known for flipping hot, buttery pancakes at their customers during Sibling’s Weekend. Chris Cakes has received multiple Guinness World Records, including most pancakes flipped in an hour as well as the highest pancake toss. Muir spent the weekend with her family, too. Her son Nathan Smith, also known as Rum Cake, tossed pancakes to kids holding out their plates. Smith worked his way through college flipping pancakes, and to this day, works at the company. Muir loves watching families have fun while trying to catch the flying pancakes. For her, Sibling’s Weekend is special because it’s an emphasis on the family connection, and a hot plate of pancakes is the best way to connect. The weekend was not exclusively for siblings. Once Holland junior Jenna Veldheer heard about Sibling’s Weekend, she called her cousins to join the fun. Veldheer brought her three cousins and only brother to CMU to take part in the weekend’s activities. The family spent their whole day Fri-
day exploring the different activities at Finch. “My cousin had been asking his mom for the last month when it was time to come up for Sibling’s Weekend,” Veldheer said. From laser tag to playing a life-size board game, the family finally made it to the rock climbing wall. “This is so much fun, I can’t believe it,” said Veldeer’s cousin Andrew Wright, 10. While a few of the cousins had a bit of trouble climbing the wall, Allison Wright, 13, had no problem going all the way to the top. The family ended their night Friday by viewing the Disney film, “Moana.” Sibling’s Weekend also brought a comedy drumming act known as rePercussion to campus and closed with the Danger Circus. RePercussion took the Plachta Auditorium stage Saturday and proved that banging on kitchen pots and pans isn’t just for kids. Vince Romanelli started the comedy drumming group when he was in fifth grade and was goofing w SIBS | 12

around with his friends. They participated in a talent show and kept running with the group’s momentum for the last 19 years. Dan Twiford joined the group a few years ago. Their performance this weekend was their first on CMU’s campus. “(CMU’s) crowd was amazing,” Twiford said. “You know it’s a good show and everyone had a good time if the back row is laughing. Romanelli said the best part of the show was the kids that just had fun with it and giggled. He said their laughter was contagious. Cousins Rylyn, 8, and sophomore Jenna Genoff, of Deckerville, said the best part of the show was the drumming and jokes that everyone could laugh at. Sunday provided more laughter as the Danger Circus closed out Sibling’s Weekend in Plachta. The circus composed of science freak Thom Britton, magician Keri Kazz and juggler Chuck Clark.
Britton opened the show by eating fire and ended it by putting his face on glass that was piled on the ground. In between, Kazz ate double-edge razor blades, Clark juggled on a unicycle and Britton sawed an apple in a participant’s mouth. Grand Rapids sophomore Allison Lale and her nephew, Breydan Green, 7, and niece, Gabriella Talaski, 7, attended the circus to close out their Sibling’s Weekend. Green and Talaski described the circus as “awesome.” Lale expressed the same sentiment about the weekend — her first Sibling’s Weekend with her niece and nephew. “I thought it was nice for them to see where I live because they always ask me why I am always gone, but they don’t understand that I go to college,” Lale said. Lale said Talaski and Green’s favorite event of the weekend was rock climbing, which was part of an array of activities Friday and Saturday, including laser tag, bowling and rope climbing. The two spent the day exploring the different activities available during their first Sibling’s Weekend. “It’s been fun — laser tag has been my favorite part so far,” Savannah said. While some students may be attending Sibling’s Weekend for the first time, other students have been bringing their family members to campus for years.
Birch Run senior Brooke Carroll has attended Sibling’s Weekend for three years in a row. This year, it was time for her youngest sibling, Levi Carroll, 8, to finally visit. The two played the life-size board game with other families and picked out prizes afterward. “They have so much fun, even if I am just holding their backpacks,” Brooke said. “They love to see where I go to school and all of CMU’s campus.”

CMU wrestling discusses if sport is team or individual By Dylan Goetz Staff Reporter sports@cm-life.com
The Central Michigan wrestling team believes the sport can be both individual and team oriented. CMU has opened this season 5-2 overall and 3-2 in the Mid-American Conference. Twentytwo of the 27 wrestlers on the Chippewas’ roster have winning records with juniors Colin Heffernan and CJ Brucki leading the way with 22 wins each, followed by 21 from sophomore Justin Oliver. Though the Chippewas have begun the season with a winning record as a team, Heffernan said he knows his individual performance is just as important as how the team performs. “You can’t blame other people for your wins or losses,” he said. In most sports, teammate success is coveted. In some wrestling meets, however, there are no team scores, which means wrestlers compete for themselves because the results will have no impact on the team. During tournaments, wrestlers compete for the team, but their individual performances determine if they will move on to the conference or NCAA Championships. Wrestlers may even come up against one of their teammates in certain tournaments if both wrestle well. For some wrestlers, that can be both a good and bad thing.

“It can definitely be frustrating because you practice with them and they know what you are going to do,” Oliver said. “It kind of loses a bit of an excitement factor because the match doesn’t flow as it usually should. It adds pres-

sure because they are on your team.” In dual meets, college wrestlers rely on their teammates to score points for their team to win. The only thing the individual wrestlers can control is their own match, since dual meets are scored by points per win by decision, major decision, fall or technical fall. When the athlete steps onto the mat during a dual meet, they go toe-to-toe with another individual as their teammates cheer them on. Oliver — who earned All-American honors during his freshman year — said his take on how wrestling should be viewed has stayed consistent. “As far as I have developed from wrestling, it is an individual sport with a team scoring system,” he said. “When you step out on the mat, it’s you against your opponent. It’s one versus one. It’s not like we are all out there wrestling each other at the same time.” The Davison native said he likes that wrestling is a somewhat individual sport because it is all on his shoulders and he can control his own result. Oliver said the sport can be viewed as a team sport by what happens behind the scenes. Behind closed doors, wrestlers push themselves and their teammates to train and work hard. “In practice, obviously you need teammates to be able to help you work out and help you get
better,” he said. Heffernan said the team aspect of the sport is bigger than most people would imagine. “When you are in the (training) room, you have to have a team that is helping you get better and helping them get better,” said Heffernan. “People come to the meet and see individuals wrestling each other, but they don’t understand how a team that is all going in the right direction is so important.” Heffernan said to succeed in wrestling, wrestlers must have a good coach, good workout partners and be in the right environment. That’s where the team aspect comes into play. CMU head coach Tom Borrelli said he sees wrestling as both individual and team specific as well, depending on the time of the season. “I know when you get to the national tournament, it’s more of an individual sport in the sense that you score points for your team as an individual based on you advancing in your bracket,” he said. “During the season, we wrestle more dual meets than tournaments so it is more team oriented.” The MAC Championships begin on March 4 followed by the NCAA Championships which begins March 16. Whether CMU will be the MAC team champions and the team will comprise individual champions is yet to be decided.

Keene scores 41 as men’s basketball wins third straight By Kullen Logsdon Staff Reporter sports@cm-life.com
Marcus Keene continued to do what he has done all season. The junior guard has continually stepped up and delivered for the Central Michigan men’s basketball team in the game’s biggest moments. Saturday was no exception. Keene carried the Chippewas to a 105-98 overtime win at Kent State behind his fourth 40-point performance of the 2016-17 season. Keene scored 41 points on 13-of-26 shooting including four 3-pointers and 10 rebounds against the Golden Flashes. The transfer from Youngstown State became the first Division I player to score 40 or more points four times in a season since BYU’s Jimmer Fredette — who went on to win National Player of the Year — did during the 2010-11 season. “I have extreme confidence in Marcus, but not even close to what kind of confidence that he has in himself,” said head coach Keno Davis. The Chippewas (14-7, 4-4
Mid-American Conference) have now won three consecutive games and four out of its last five after starting 0-3 in conference play. Saturday’s win was CMU’s first MAC victory away from McGuirk Arena. Central Michigan moved into fourth place in the MAC West Division and is only one game out of first place. The team plays five of its last ten regular season games at McGuirk Arena. CMU led late in regulation Saturday, but a layup by the Golden Flashes with 1.6 seconds remaining sent the game into overtime. Keene scored the first eight points in overtime for the Chippewas and finished with 11 total in the period. In addition to Keene’s performance, senior guard Braylon Rayson added 26 points, none bigger than two game-clinching free throws with 15 seconds remaining in overtime that put the game out of reach. Davis said he saw his team’s confidence grow in its first conference road victory. “That’s what I like about this group is that we do not panic,” he said. “Even when the coach is panicked, the players seem pretty calm and know that
they have confidence in their ability. They were able to show it tonight, especially in the second half.” Keene (30.3) and Rayson (20) continue to be the nation’s top scoring duo and have led the team in scoring in 19 of its 21 games. Keene tied a program record for most 30-point games in a career with 12. All 12 of Keene’s 30-point games have come this season. He also moved into fifth place for most points scored in a single season. Rayson tied former CMU player Ben Kelso for sixth place on CMU’s all-time scoring list with 1,627 points. He’s also on pace to be the third player in Chippewa history to score more than 2,000 points in a career. Senior Josh Kozinski also chipped in with 18 points on 5-of-8 shooting beyond the arc Saturday. It was his highest point total since he scored a career-high 20 points against Chicago State on Dec. 30. CMU will visit Buffalo at 7 p.m. Tuesday. The Bulls are 9-12 overall and 3-5 in MAC play. Buffalo defeated the Chippewas 74-61 in their only contest last season.

Josh Barnhart | Staff Photographer Junior forward Tinara Moore looks to pass during the Chippewas game against Miami University on Jan. 18 at McGuirk Arena.
Loss to UT keeps women’s hoops third in MAC West By Andrew McDonald Staff Reporter sports@cm-life.com
After dropping its first Mid-American Conference game of the season, the Central Michigan women’s basketball team fell to Toledo, 74-72 Saturday. It was the first time all season the Chippewas have lost back-to-back games, falling to 2-5 in road games. CMU (14-6 overall, 6-2 MAC) remains in third place in the MAC West Division. Sophomore guard Presley Hudson drove down the lane with six seconds left and was called for a change, which resulted in the Rockets gaining a two-point lead. With five seconds remaining, the Chippewas got the ball up the court quickly, giving senior forward Jewel Cotton a chance at tying the game, but she couldn’t convert the jumper as time expired. Head Coach Sue Guevara said she believes her team played a tough game, but gave up too many rebounds. “We did battle back and played the best we could,” Guevara said. “However, we gave up too many offensive rebounds. When you give up 21 offensive boards and allow 22 points off of them, you won’t win.” Momentum seemed to be shifting when CMU went on a 15-3 run to end the third quarter, resulting in a 57-52 Chippewa lead.
However, UT responded with a 10-2 run to open the final quarter, and from there it was close to the finish. CMU was out-rebounded by the Rockets 40-38 and turned the ball over 18 times. Seven of those turnovers came from Hudson, who finished 2-for-10 shooting from the floor. The Chippewas shot under their season average in field goal percentage on the road. CMU shot 39.6 percent from the field and just 30 percent (6-for-20) from 3-point distance. For the third straight game, it was junior forward Tinara Moore doing most of the scoring for the Chippewas. Moore finished with a season-high of 33 points on 10-for-18 shooting from the field and made a couple 3-pointers while adding eight rebounds and two blocks. One other Chipppewa finished in doublefigures and that was junior guard Aleah Swary. She tallied 11 points while adding five rebounds and two steals. Moore was the only starter to finish in double figures, and for Guevara that was a problem. “Right now Tinara (Moore) is the only weapon that we have on offense,” Guevara said. “If we want to win, we are going to need a lot more than one player doing the scoring. We are struggling against physical teams and missing open shots when we have them.” CMU will head back to Mount Pleasant where they will take on Ohio. Tipoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Wednesday at McGuirk Arena.
