Greeks raise $83,500 for child advocacy center, Malter memorial

The Greek community raised $83,500 during the 2017 annual Greek Week. The funds will be donated to the Isabella County Child Advocacy Center and the Kristy Malter Memorial Fund.

More than 3,000 people filled McGuirk Arena Friday night to attend “The Kristy Malter Memorial Greek Week Mock Rock,” where Greek Week teams competitively performed song and dance routines they choreographed throughout the week. At the end of the show, the Greek Week chairs announced the $83,500 success. Mock Rock serves as the Greek Week grand finale every year.

The 2017 Greek Week organizers set no limits for themselves.

Max Sarvello, chairman and member of Sigma Pi, said the co-chairs decided their only goal was to raise more money than last year. And they did, surpassing last year’s total by $16,000.

The 2017 Mock Rock was named in honor of Kristy Malter, an Alpha Gamma Delta sorority sister who died last summer from bacterial meningitis.

Each team designed a performance to fit a theme and competed for points to be added to their total Greek Week score. This year’s

theme was “Key Words,” where the teams chose a word to center the performance around.

The Kappa Sigma, Zeta Tau Alpha and Kappa Alpha Psi team won Mock Rock with a performance centered around the word “world.”

Sigma Pi, Alpha Gamma Delta and Omega Psi Phi were the overall Greek Week winners.

Fenton junior Alyssa Trapp of Phi Mu, a participant in Mock Rock, said Greek Week is great because everything loops back to the philanthropies. “(Greek Week is) important because Greek Life kind of has a bad reputation,” Trapp said. “With philanthropy, we can really show how much of an impact we can have in our community.”

Malter’s parents, Tim and Donna, spoke at the end of the event, and expressed how grateful they were about the Greek community honoring Kristy.

“This was awesome,” Tim Malter said. “To see all of you come together to do what you’ve done today has touched our lives and our hearts so much.”

The Malters’ speech brought tears to many in the audience.

“I know some of you don’t know us and we’ve never met some of you, but I feel like you’ve hugged us today and touched our lives so much,” Tim Malter continued. “It’s just been so beautiful.”

Athletic training program to become graduate program within four years

Students pursuing an undergraduate degree in the athletic training program will be some of the last as it will move to a graduate program by 2021.

Rene Shingles, chairwoman of the School of Rehabilitation and Medical Sciences, said the change has to do with accreditation. One option for dealing with the change she said would be to turn the program into an accelerated master’s degree.

A five-year program would entice more students to join the master program, she said.

In fall 2016, 67 students were signed athletic training majors, according to the Office of Institutional Research.

“We are thinking of implementing a ‘three plus two’ program, with three years counting toward their undergraduate credits and the fourth year having credits that count toward both undergraduate and graduate credits,” Shingles said.

The Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education accredits Central Michigan University’s athletic training program. CAATE cited the need for higher standards in a press release following the commission’s approval of the change in 2015.

“This decision to shift the degree level is essential to ensuring our future ability to meet the expectations of the health care team, to continuing to improve patient outcomes, and to keep our profession sustainable for generations to come,” stated the release.

CMU’s program will include new standards and requirements for students.

Currently, students are required to take courses focused on injury prevention, sports nutrition and field work.

Shingles said some of the new skills the program would teach include drawing blood, minor suturing and providing fluids via IV.

The new requirements for students will be approved by September and will take effect at a later date.

Students enrolled in the program will be able to complete their bachelor’s degree, Shingles said. Students will no longer be able to enroll in the undergraduate program at a certain point, but no date has been set.

“The master degree will offer more benefits and we will be more qualified to carry out our duties,” Robosan said.

‘SlutWalk’ marchers promote justice for sexual assault survivors

Chants of “no means no” echoed through the streets as more than 200 people march together in the “SlutWalk” April 8.

The national movement was brought to Central Michigan University by the Organization of Women Leaders, a registered student organization on campus.

“SlutWalk” marches across the country are intended to promote justice for victims of sexual assault while protesting rape culture — the societal attitude that trivializes sexual assault and abuse.

The movement formed in 2011 after a police officer claimed a woman wouldn’t have been raped if she wasn’t dressed

like a “slut,” said Brownstown senior Madison Rodriguez-Eberth, president of OWLs. Protesters marched from the Bovee University center to downtown Mount Pleasant, holding signs with written phrases such as “don’t blame the victim” and “eliminate male entitlements.”

Downtown, they listened to speakers share personal stories about sexual assault and describe how they didn’t let the experience oppress them. Many used poetry to express their feelings.

“Humanity,” a traveling dance group that promotes social justice and originates from CMU, also performed downtown.

show, they ripped the labels off and unveiled shirts underneath that read “human.”

Sarah Van Howe said she participated in “SlutWalk” because she was sexually abused two years ago and ever since has been passionate about abolishing victim blaming and rape culture.

“I don’t want to see other people go through what I went through,” the Aurora, Illinois

sophomore said. “(Sexual assault) gets brushed under the rug. People don’t want to accept that it’s here. By (marching), we’re (saying) ‘Hey, this could happen to anyone.’”

Rodriguez-Eberth said she was not planning to speak at the event but felt so moved by the other speakers she wanted to share her story.

“I am not ashamed of who I am and what happened to me,” Rodriguez-Eberth said. “I’m proud of my accomplishments, I’m proud of everyone here today, my organization, all of you.

This is incredible.”

Trump’s proposed cuts to Great Lakes restoration would have negative impact on region, CMU

P

resident Donald Trump’s proposed 2018 budget includes cuts to multiple agencies, some of which has

Michigan residents feeling uneasy.

Trump’s budget, “America First: A Budget Blueprint To Make America Great Again,” proposes $2.6 billion cuts to the Environmental Protection Agency. This includes the elimination of the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, a program that has received bipartisan praise for helping clean the Great Lakes ecosystem since being established in 2010.

If approved as is, we think Trump’s budget would have devastating effects on the Great Lakes. It’s repercussions would be seen throughout the state of Michigan and at Central Michigan University.

We encourage members of the CMU community to call and write to Congress or get involved in registered student organizations like Student Environmental Alliance. Let your opinion be heard.

Most of all, the proposed cuts would directly affect CMU’s Institute for Great Lakes Research, which receives funding through the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. It is a national leader in research and education on the Great Lakes basin.

The Institute for Great Lakes Research has made first-of-its-kind discoveries that contribute to restoration efforts at the local level.

The multi-state program, headquartered at CMU, unifies those local restoration and protection efforts of the individual states that border

Without it, some states could be working in one direction while others work in the opposite direction.

Trump’s plan will make clean up and protection efforts more difficult.

These proposed cuts also jeopardize jobs, future research and educational opportunities for CMU faculty and students.

The Institute for Great Lakes Research employs 24 faculty members, two post-doctoral positions and roughly 80 graduate students and technicians. The graduate students working at the institute get the hands-on training they need to move on to a permanent position.

A decrease in funding means the Institute for Great Lakes Research would have to operate on a “smallerscale,” according to founding director and CMU professor Donald Urzarski.

This could mean less graduate-student positions will be available at the institute in coming years. There will be less opportunities for environmental, biology and other science majors to meet the requirements they need to move

on to permanent positions.

We encourage concerned students, faculty members and community members to object to these proposed budget cuts by calling or writing your congressman.

Students can also get active through RSOs like SEA, which holds letter writing sessions during its weekly meetings.

The group meets at 7 p.m. every Tuesday in Anspach Hall, room 151.

After nearly a decade of progress, now is not the time to scale back efforts to clean the country’s natural resources — our favorite places to vacation, play and admire.

If President Trump’s administration truly wants to make America great, it should fight to protect funding for programs that literally clean up our land and restore our natu-

ral resources. If it wants to keep Americans safe, ignoring science and gutting environmental restoration programs isn’t the way to do it.

A change in political party and president should not mean our country’s dedication to keeping its natural resources clean and healthy changes. This is not a liberal or conservative issue. Protecting our environment is an issue everyone has a stake in.

Some people won’t notice the

lack of funding until their favorite lake is infested with zebra muscles, their favorite kayaking cove is choked out by an algae bloom or their favorite fishing hole is full of Asian Carp.

We shouldn’t let it get to that point.

If students and community members object to these proposed budget cuts, there’s a chance we can continue actually making America great by continuing to clean the mess we’ve made.

Health care failure reveals Trump isn’t who he said he was Last month, Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives attempted to ram a divisive and unpopular bill through the United States Congress and onto the American people.

The failure of this bill, the American Health Care Act, exposed two truths: President Donald Trump is not the deal-making expert he claimed to be, and Democrats have more power than anyone may have realized.

The repeal and replacement plan for the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, was supposed to be easy for Republicans. They campaigned and fought to repeal it for the past seven years.

This was their chance to do it.

Even with control of the House, Senate and presidency, Republicans failed to do what they promised — repeal the “disaster” that is Obamacare.

They failed, and did so in spectacular fashion, exposing major rifts within the party.

The failure to get the bill passed partially rests on Trump’s shoulders. This

failure showed that he is not a president who fully understands the complexities of politics and policy.

During his campaign, Trump boasted how he understood Washington D.C. better than anyone. He said he knew the system.

After his endorsement of the bill, he sat down with lawmakers, saying he was confident he would be able to use his expertise to get the bill passed. After numerous meetings with moderate Republicans and Freedom Caucus leaders — members who were instrumental to his election — it was clear the bill wouldn’t come to a vote.

The bill was dropped. The failure

exposes Trump as a president who does not know Washington politics, nor the politics of his own party.

The bill’s failure may also indicate how much power House Democrats wield.

Even with a Republican majority, there is very little room for error on their part. If Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi can keep Democrats united, only 21 Republicans need to vote “no” before a bill fails. Legislation must appeal to both moderate Republicans and farright conservatives.

This is where complications arise.

The more conservative a bill is, the more likely it will turn off moder-

ates. The more watered down the bill becomes, the more likely it is to turn off conservatives.

This leaves a wide opening for Democrats to find their way to the bargaining table. Trump has already acknowledged this by saying he may be willing to negotiate with Democrats in the future.

Perhaps the rifts in the Republican party, Trump’s misgivings and the Democratic cohesion will bring about a period of much needed bipartisanship.

That may be a fantasy, but the reality is these two revelations are sure to be illuminating as Republicans plot their next move.

Now is not the right time for a new Gender and Sexuality Center at CMU TO THE EDITOR: In a recent edition of Central Michigan Life, there was a story about how a group of students would like to see funding for a Gender and Sexuality Center included in the new budget for the 2017-18 school year.

On March 30, students marched to Warriner Hall, collected signatures and gained support for the new center.

This sounds like a great idea that would give a lot of support to a marginalized group of students on campus, but I do not believe it is the right time to create this center.

Considering the university is grappling with a $20 million budget deficit, creating a new

Gender and Sexuality Center is not a top priority for university leaders. To rectify the deficit, the university is being forced to cut courses and professors, which affects major programs in the long run.

It also shouldn’t be implemented right now because there is already an office for LGBTQ services on campus.

What can a new Gender and Sexuality Center do that the Office of LGBTQ Services can’t?

The Office of LGBT Services has programs that serve to educate and support marginalized groups such as Trans Week of Awareness, Pride Week, Social Justice Dialogues, Safe Zone Training and more. In addition to

these resources, there are also the student led organizations such as Spectrum, as well as Transcend and the Counseling Center.

I’m not saying a Gender and Sexuality Center would be a waste of money.

It isn’t.

It would serve as a resource and support system to help many discover who they are in a safe place. It would put an end to the long push to get a GSC at CMU. But there are more important issues the university should tackle at this time.

For example, in the chemistry department, there is only one professor that teaches organic chemistry. Other classes, such as cell biology, only have a few

spots in each section, which causes students to get onto the waiting list where they may or may not get into the class.

The Gender and Sexuality Center should be implemented because I know it will help so many students. It makes me thankful that I have the Office of Inclusion and Diversity to use as a resource because they help so many students of color every day.

In the university’s current situation, I think the GSC should put in the “to be continued” folder where it can be considered at a later date.

It may not be ideal, but it is the most rational thing to do.

Owens elected SGA president for 2017-18 academic year

Midland senior Anna Owens was elected Student Government Association president for the 2017-18 academic year.

Owens currently serves as SGA vice president. She and her running mate, sophomore Derek Sturvist, were chosen by the student body during an election between March 28 and April 4.

Current SGA President Jazmin Biernat said 1,588 students voted in the presidential election.

Owens was elected over

treasurer Luke Anderson and House leader Cody Van Buren.

Sophomore Galen Miller served as Anderson’s running mate, while Senate Leader Emilee Madison ran with Van Buren.

Junior Mike DeGregory was elected treasurer. All 15 senators on the ballot were also elected. A total of 1,032 people voted for DeGregory, Biernat said, while a total of 989 votes were cast for senators.

The SGA Presidential Inauguration is scheduled for 7 p.m. on April 24 in the Powers Ballroom. Those interested in attending can RSVP on the SGA Orgsync page by April 18.

Students and residents will be able to get professional photos taken from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. April 13 at Finch Fieldhouse Room 113.

An individual and group package will be offered for $5 and $4, respectively. The individual package will include three headshots and a group package will include four group pictures of up to four people.

The photos will be taken by professional photographer Michael Armstrong, who will also edit the photos. All proceeds will be donated to Habitat for Humanity.

A group of five students organized Finally Photos for their RPL 430 class assignment.

Clare Backus, a Novi junior in recreation and event management, is part of the group organizing the event.

She said they wanted to provide an “inexpensive” way for students to get professional photos and for local families to get photos for Easter.

Each person who gets their photo taken will also receive two raffle tickets for a chance to win gift cards. Those waiting will also be able to enjoy games such as cornhole.

PRO-REFUGEE RSO TO HOST OPEN FORUM AND DISCUSSION IN PARK LIBRARY This week panelists and students will discuss the refugee crisis around the world in an open-forum style event.

The registered student organization Student Advocates for Forced Migrants is hosting a panel titled “Finding Home.” The event will take place from 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, April 13 in the Charles V. Park Library

Graduate student Mallory Walton, an adviser of SAFM, said the goal of the panel is to educate the audience and allow an open atmosphere where the audience can ask questions and not judged.

SAFM hopes to clear up confusion and establish how serious the refugee crisis is.

“When I came to Central Michigan University in 2011, there was not a single person talking about refugees,” said Dr. Prakash Adhikari, an adviser of the RSO who holds a doctorate in forced migration. “If we did not do this, I’d feel as if I was failing my duty.”

Student recuperates in Minnesota after undergoing two bone marrow transplants, plans to return to CMU this fall

When Kyle Tanner learned he had Fanconi anemia at age 16, he didn’t understand the toll the bone marrow disease would take on him.

“It definitely made me anxious and it made me more inclined to do things that I wouldn’t have otherwise done if I didn’t know I had a life-threatening disease,” Tanner said.

He lived his life as though nothing was wrong, but did his research. Tanner learned more about Fanconi anemia and the serious health risks it could cause, such as bone marrow failure, physical abnormalities and the risk of getting cancer.

Doctors informed Tanner that he would likely need a bone marrow transplant by age 19.

In November 2016, the 22-year-old Hudson senior received startling news: He would have to undergo a bone marrow transplant to save his life.

As Tanner’s final exams approached, he decided to go through with the operation.

Anxious and uncertain, the Central Michigan University student missed the entire spring 2017 semester and traveled to Minnesota for his first transplant. His second transplant would come a week later.

It has been two months since Tanner received both transplants. It was an experience that tested his strength and changed his outlook on life, he said.

Due to regulations, Tanner cannot know the

name of his donor who helped rebuild his life for the next two years. All he knows is that a 20-yearold from Germany saved him.

“I’m extremely grateful,” Tanner said. “I’m sure I will be for the rest of my life. That was an essential part of the process. It’s insane that you can save someone’s life by giving them your bone marrow.”

Tanner has symptoms like fevers and rapid hair loss that ends in rapid hair growth on his face while he recovers.

Tanner will remain at a Ronald McDonald House in the Minneapolis area for a full 100 days in order for doctors to monitor his condition. During his stay, he returned to the hospital with a fever due to complications.

“You can’t be happy here all the time — it’s impossible,” he said. “But being able to accept what you’re going through, and realize what really happens is not in your hands, I think that’s really important.”

Tanner hopes to leave Minnesota in May and return to CMU in the fall. His goal is to earn his bachelor’s degree in Broadcast and Cinematic Arts in May 2018.

“This whole experience isn’t going to leave me,” he said. “Even right now, I don’t completely realize how it’s changed me.”

Freshman shortstop shines as starter for softball team

Most of the Central Michigan softball team’s starters are upperclassmen, but one underclassman sticks out for the Chippewas.

Freshman shortstop Morgan Gardner has started 26 of the 30 games she’s played in this season, more than any other freshman on the team.

Gardner has a hitting average of .213 with 17 hits and is tied for third on the team in RBIs with 14. In the field, the right-hander has 34 putouts and only seven errors on the season, holding a .903 fielding percentage.

Gardner said thanks to her teammates, she doesn’t have to think about her lack of experience when she is on the field.

“It is pretty exciting to just be a part of a team like this one,” she said. “I know they always have my back and are very uplifting when things get tough, so I haven’t had to deal with a lot of extra pressure.”

The Armada native played four years at Romeo High School. Gardner was the Macomb county Player of the Year in 2015, while making the All-District and All-Region first teams her freshman through junior seasons.

Gardner’s journey to becoming CMU’s starting shortstop didn’t start with her playing the position.

“I’ve always had a pretty good arm and OK range so they would always throw me into the middle infield somewhere,” Gardner said. “I take pride in playing shortstop now because I used to play second base a lot. When I got a chance at shortstop, I proved I could play it and I love it. It’s just a more fun position to me.”

When arriving on campus and joining the team, Gardner said one particular player really

That player is senior Evelyn Lorimer. “(Lorimer) is a great person to look up to and is so well-rounded as a human,” Gardner said. “She is very open to helping all of the time, and never looked at me differently even though she is much older.”

Lorimer said the impression Gardner left has stuck with her ever since. “(Gardner) is a gritty freshman and I love her to death,” Lorimer said. “She just came in with so much confidence from day one, more confidence than I’ve seen from a freshman in a while, and that stuck with me. It reminds me of (senior pitcher) Rachael (Knapp) her freshman year when she came in and owned it.”

Head Coach Margo Jonker said Gardner has impressive traits as a player and person.

“(Gardner) is a really nice person that never wants to think too much about herself, she’s always putting others before her,” Jonker said.

“In the game, she leads with her actions on the field, and has really become a great asset to what we have on this team. She can drive in runs and play the infield cleanly.”

Gardner said she doesn’t feel the pressure of having to carry the defense because of how the team functions.

“I don’t really ever feel like I have to be a leader because I’m the shortstop,” Gardner said. “My team is very good at all of their positions. Everyone always talks on the field, so it’s not really like a leadership position on this team at least because we all look to each other.”

Knapp said the things Gardner does behind the scenes is what separates her from other freshmen.

“(Gardner) is pretty awesome as a person and has done well maturing as just a freshman,” Knapp said. “She has a high-energy level most of the time, and uses that every day in practice. Being a hard worker all the time is what she is great at doing.”

Gardner shared Knapp’s sentiments.

“I don’t really have anything I do outside of softball to get my mind away from it because I love being around it,” Gardner said. “I try to pretty much grind all of the time to get better.”

The Chippewas (23-11, 8-3 Mid-American Conference) have won three of their last four games. Gardner said her goal for the season is to win a MAC Championship.

“That’s what I want more than anything out of this season,” she said.

The Chippewas will take on rival Western Michigan at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Margo Jonker Stadium.
