Leadership Safari

Leadership Safari is a great opportunity to not only meet new people, but also grow as an individual. Over the course of five days you will be teamed up with a group of people and a group leader.

With this group you will do exciting activities such as trust falls, obstacle courses, listen to motivational public speakers and more.

Take a picture by the seal

The Central Michigan University seal is located outside Warriner Hall. This is a great place to stop by and take a picture at during orientation, leadership safari or even walking to class. Taking a picture by the seal is a tradition to remember your time here at CMU.

Participate in the midnight scream

If you go outside or open your window Sunday night right before finals week don’t be alarmed if you hear hundreds of students screaming. This CMU tradition is called the midnight scream.

Students scream at the top of their lungs to relieve stress before taking their final exams.

Go to a tailgate AND a football game

Love cheering on your school? Check out a CMU tailgate and football game located behind the football stadium. This is a great way to meet new friends and catch up with old ones while showing your school spirit. All football games are free for CMU students when you show your student ID, so there is no excuse not to go.

Jesus dogs

What college student doesn't love free hot dogs? Put on by members of a christian fellowship His House, the free food giveaway is located on the corner of Main and Bellows in the big white house.

Here you will find what CMU students call “Jesus Dogs” and it's free.

Join an RSO

There is no better way to get involved on campus than joining a registered student organization. Central Michigan has nearly 400 organizations on campus ranging from student athletes to recycling advocate groups. You can find these RSOs on the CMU website under the Life at CMU tab.

The Malt Shop Cafe

Want to get out and take a walk? Stop by The Malt Shop Cafe located right on the edge of north campus on South University Avenue. Come here to hang out with your friends, and grab a bite to eat. The Malt Shop offers pizza, subs, wraps and more.

Tube Down the Chippewa River

Once the warm weather hits Mount Pleasant there is nothing better than tubing down the Chippewa River. Start off your semester right by grabbing a group of friends and enjoying a float down the river for the day. This is a great way to meet new friends and bond with the ones you bring.

Go to Pint Night

Bored on a Tuesday night? Not at central youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not; go check out Wayside Central. This dance club is 18 years old and over and a great place to let loose and have some fun. Going to Pints is a CMU student tradition and numerous students from other schools come up to enjoy the fun.

What is better than getting free stuff as a college student?

The answer is nothing! Each fall an event called MainStage is put on in the SAC parking lot right in front of the football stadium. This is a fun way to learn about the opportunities CMU has to offer. Grab your friends and check out the fun games and free food.

Studying abroad was always such a foreign topic for me (pun intended), because being able to graduate on time was always on my mind. When I found out that I would be able to study in another country for a whole semester, without falling behind, I knew I had to do it!

After realizing I was actually able to study abroad, I began to research programs in the UK. I had always dreamed of traveling there one day, so I decided to seize the opportunity.

With the help of my study abroad advisor, I chose to attend Edge Hill University in England.

I was especially excited to attend this program because it had just been recognized as the “University of the Year” by Times Higher Education. I felt as though being able to study at an award winning University would provide me with exceptional benefits.

At Edge Hill, I took all psychology classes to help fulfill my minor requirements. I loved being able to do research that focused on European studies because they expressed extremely different viewpoints from American research. I am now able to use those European thoughts and ideas in classes that I am taking here at CMU. Some of the courses I took there were courses I would have never thought to take otherwise, but I’m glad I got the chance to do so!

I noticed a lot of differences between the US and UK’s education system. First off, the grading scale is completely different! If a student receives a 70% in England, it actually converts to an A in the US. When I received my first grade, I definitely had a moment of panic when I thought I was close to failing! Another major difference I saw was that, for most courses, students were typically assigned a major project or paper, and took a final exam – that’s it! It definitely caused me a lot of stress seeing as though, in America, a lot of our courses consist of a combination of assignments, quizzes, projects, and exams. The courses there really rely on students to be very independent and self-disciplined, so projects requirements were very broad. This gave me the ability to explore the topics that interested me the most, instead of having projects that had very specific requirements. I like to think that being forced to adjust to such drastic differences has helped me to cope with change a lot easier.

While academics are obviously important while studying abroad, I also gained so much more during my time there. From making lifelong friends all over the world, to backpacking across Europe for two weeks, I know I’ll never be the same. Studying abroad has affected my life in so many ways, and I wouldn’t change it for the world.

What joining an RSO taught me

By Samantha Meyer During my freshman year, I usually stayed to the same group of friends. I didn't really reach out and talk to a lot of people I was content with my life.

Once I started getting more involved in classes for my major. I started to realize everyone in my classes were friends, except me. I wanted that, I wanted to meet more people in my major and get connected.

This is when I said, “Okay Sam, it’s time to get involved.” I knew the first step was to join a student organization.

For me, that was Public Relations Student Society of America. I walked into my first general meeting and I had no idea what was going to happen. I didn't have anyone to talk to or sit by. It was just me. Shortly after the meeting started, we broke up into groups to talk about how to make your LinkedIn profile more professional. I was relieved when I left this meeting because I knew this was something that was going to help me with my future.

The next meeting rolled around and I knew I had to go back. I was ready to build my skills

in public relations. By joining PRSSA, I have learned more about my future career than I would have in a classroom. I learn more skills at these meetings because we work in groups and bounce ideas off of each other we just met.

Being in PRSSA for only four months I have already made great friends.

At each meeting I talk to someone new - someone I feel like I have known forever. Not only have I made great friends in this group, but also I have made connections with professionals in the field. Being in PRSSA has given me the chance to network with professionals and ask them for advice.

I let to learn more about them and the kind of companies they work for.

Joining PRSSA has given me more than I could have expected. I have a better understanding of what I want my future to look like, I have meet some inspiring people and I feel more confident in myself as a public relations professional. These are skills that I wouldn’t have gained anywhere else. I can’t thank myself enough for getting up and deciding it was time to get involved. I know now that joining my RSO put me in the right step towards my future.

With more than 400 Registered Student Organizations (RSOs), CMU is likely to have something that will match your interests. If you can’t find anything, you can start your own RSO.

Keep your eyes open!

RSO opportunities are all around you. Events are often promoted on bulletin boards in CMU buildings. Students from various organizations do classroom visits to explain what their RSO is about, and sometimes hand out forms with more information.

Most of all, keep in mind that RSOs are there for you. Don’t be afraid to ask other students questions about the organizations they are involved in. The earlier you start, the more you will be able to develop your interests and have leadership opportunities.

It takes time to get used to the slang of our campus, but why waste any time guessing what everything means? Here’s a guide to bring you up to speed:

SAC

Pronunciation: “Sack”

Used in a sentence: “I’m going to the SAC to work out later” What is it? The SAC, or Student Activity Center, is our university gym.

RFoc

Pronunciation: “R-Fock”

Used in a sentence: “Want to go to to RFoc for dinner?”

What is it? Otherwise known as Real Food on Campus, this is the towers dining hall.

U.C.

DC

Pronunciation: “D-C”

Used in a sentence: “I’m definitely getting some DC tonight” What is it? Dog Central, home to any hot dog your heart desires--from bacon and mac n cheese topping to fritos and peanut butter. A late night phenomenon in downtown Mount Pleasant.

Main

Pronunciation: “Main”

Used in a sentence: “There’s a party on Main tonight” What is it? Greek street—The main road where the sorority and fraternity houses are on campus. It also leads you straight downtown!

FEW

Pronunciation: “Few”

Used in a sentence:“She’s living in FEW” What is it? A word that represents Fabiano, Emmons and Woldt residential halls.

U.P.

Pronunciation: “you-pea”

Used in a sentence: “I took all my U.P.’s as a freshman” What is it? A word used almost exclusively at CMU when referring to “university program” courses. These are the foundational prerequisites to any major, so everyone is required to take them (english, math, science, lab credits, etc.).

How to deal with stress in college

Sometimes the best way to deal with stress is to distract yourself from it.

Working out is a great way to put your energy into something else completely.

I used to hate the idea of it, I really did.

But I quickly found that on the days I felt most homesick or overwhelmed with my classes, the best relief was heading over to the SAC with my roommates.

We’d hit the sauna, run the track and leave with clear minds.

While the transition from high school to college is exciting in many ways, the responsibilities of being a full-time student and living on your own for the first time can be overwhelming. Balancing classes, a social life and down time isn’t always as simple as it sounds. Having spent four years at this university, I’ve had my fair share of mental breakdowns and learned what it takes to cope with the stresses of college.

Find Study Buddies

When it comes to classes, sometimes finding motivation is the hardest part.

You’re on your own, no one is over your shoulder making sure you study or do your homework. It’s easy to slack--but trust a senior--don’t make it a habit!

Most freshmen and sophomores are enrolled in the same university program (“U.P.”) classes. Don’t be afraid to utilize the dorm lounges to meet people, set up study sessions and ease the stress of classes by working together.

CMU has a small campus, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a lot to do. As graduation approaches, I certainly still have a lot on my CMU-bucket-list that could have been crossed out a long time ago. On the days you’re feeling overwhelmed or need a mental break, spend some time embracing different experiences, traditions and places on and off campus.

Relax--- you’re not behind.

While both my freshman roommates quickly discovered their niche at CMU, I began to feel the pressure of finding a place to fit in. I wish I could tell my younger-self that there is nothing wrong with taking your time. Don’t get stressed out by your confusion, because it is perfectly normal and you’re going to end up where you belong when you’re supposed to on your journey at CMU.

The sights and sounds around campus change everyday and every year. That is because eleven new academic and residential buildings have been built on CMU’s campus in the last 10 years.

Safety at CMU is taken very seriously. Make sure you always travel with a partner on campus. CMU does however offer campus safety and security services like 24-hour foot and vehicle patrols, late night transport/ escort service, 24-hour emergency telephones, lighted pathways/sidewalks, student patrols and controlled dormitory access.

Alcohol is permitted for students of legal age at Central Michigan University. Be careful because if you’re not of legal drinking age and are drinking on campus, alcohol violations are very real and expensive.

First Offense: $200 fine.

Online Alcohol Education course. ($15 enrollment fee) Second Offense: $300 fine.

Bringing a bike to campus? Make sure you register your bike with the CMU Police Department for added security free of charge. Having a bike registered can help local police resolve bike disputes and return a stolen bike when found.

Finch Fieldhouse was originally student housing in the 1950s, but was eventually turned into the fieldhouse where sports could be played. It is said there was a shooting range in the basement and those who walk by at night can hear screams.

The Alumni Field was used before Kelly Shorts Stadium was built. Legend says one October night, a football practice was taking place. One player pushed himself too hard and passed out and died from the cold grasp of night. Random cold spots are still felt walking through the field.

The Central Seal has a love story that most students don’t know about. In the 1950s, two lovers from different social classes planned to elope and run away together.

The woman waited at the seal for hours, and at 4 a.m., her love finally showed up, distraught after finding his fiancé dead on the ground. He gave her one last kiss and he died too. If a couple goes to the seal and kisses under the full moon, the couple will bless them.

Barnes Hall Legend has it one of the corners of the study room belongs to a girl who hung herself. Current residents have experienced missing papers and books. In 1995, a few girls were watching television and the screen went black. The TV eventually came back on and the credits of the show were playing.

Powers Hall used to be the Music Building and in 1978, the legend says there was a girl named Emily who wanted to be a piano player. She had an audition and spent all night practicing, which caused her to have a headache from all the stress. She ended up dying from a brain aneurism and in that following December, a janitor heard her ghost playing the piano. It is said that she was so devoted to music that she’s buried under the piano flower bed and students can still hear her play.

Welcome to college, a magical place full of friends, fun and occasionally headache inducing stress. All of that magic runs off of one thing; coffee. Do you know who will be right by your side while studying until 3 p.m.? Coffee. Do you know who will love you while you walk to your 8 a.m. with no makeup on? Coffee. So for all of the coffee lovers, here is a list of Mount Pleasant’s coffee shops.

Kaya Coffee House

Kaya sits across from The Malt Shop Cafe on South University Avenue in an empty strip mall that is easy to pass up. Hidden in this quiet corner of campus, is a getaway unlike any other part of campus. The atmosphere of Kaya is that of a vegan activist who only listens to vinyl records while browsing Tumbler, because whatever man, explaining things is totally 2012. From their ceiling lined with empty bags of coffee grounds to their stage used for live music and poetry slams, it screams hip.

The Dreamer

The Dreamer is a quiet, humble location on South Franklin Street on the north end of campus. The large windows facing the street are a symbol of their overall vibe. That vibe is modernism and transparency. The Dreamer is cool without putting it in your face. The wooden floors lead your eyes too eggshell white walls covered in original artwork. It is quiet, it is bright and it is open.

Starbucks

What’s there to say? It’s a Starbucks. Located in the University Center it’s a hub of activity. Surrounded by meeting and lounge areas, it’s a great place to grab your favorite cup and meet up with friends or classmates to study for exams.

Tim Hortons

Located on Mission Street, Tim Hortons is a Canadian classic invading Michigan.

More corporate than your quiet coffee shop, its brews are still classic and smooth.

Tim Hortons is also a good stop for doughnuts, frappes, and other breakfast favorites. Tim Horton’s drive thru sets them apart when you need a speedy caffeine fix.

Einstein Bros Bagel

More known for their bagels than their coffee, that’s no excuse to not run in for a cup of Joe. Stop in for a famous Einstein’s bagel, chase it with a cup of their special brew and boom, you’ve got breakfast before class.

Java City

Small and convenient, Java City is located right inside the door of the Charles V. Park Library. Java City greets you before your descent into the library and says “You look stressed, why don’t you grab a quick cup?” Like a Venus Fly Trap awaits bugs, Java City awaits tired students who need to study, and the circle of life continues.

What I wish I Knew as a

Freshman son

Your freshman year is such an exciting time where you’ll learn so much about yourself. You’ll make mistakes and accomplish things you never thought you could within the next four years. Everyone learns different lessons and has their own advice to give once they leave, but keeping an open mind about your college experience is one of the best things you can do.

It’s normal to eat alone in the dining halls

I was always so worried about making sure I’d always have someone to eat with. In high school, eating alone at lunch was social suicide, but in college it’s completely normal. Everyone has different schedules so you’ll see many students alone grabbing a bite to eat between classes.

You don’t need an unlimited food plan

It’s better to have more Flex Dollars than more meal swipes. You will do most of your eating on the go, at the library, at the Down Under Food Court or late at night from the markets and campus restaurants.

Get Involved Right Away

Getting involved helps with the transition of your freshman year.

Check out MainStage at the beginning of the year and find a club that you’d be interested in. It’s a great way to meet people.

Get to know your professors

Let your professors know that you care about your schoolwork and are excited to learn. Your professors could be the people you use as your references in the future and they might even help you get internships or jobs. Start by meeting with them during their office hours and asking questions whenever you have them.

The library is your best friend

Studying at the Charles V. Park Library makes a world of a difference. The dorms have too many distractions and studying in the quiet library helps you get so much more work done in a shorter amount of time. Grab your study buddies, and have a lib night!

Your roommates don’t have to be your best friends Keep an open mind about the kind of relationships you may have with your roommates. You may all become the best of friends but it’s no big deal if you aren’t. Just make the best of it and remember you can always have closer friendships with other people.

How to ‘ that E B T NOFreshman’

During your freshman year of college, you’ll finally have the freedom you’ve been itching for, and a chance to start anew.

With all of that being understood, there are some things you should keep in mind to help smooth your transition into the collegiate world and ensure the best start possible.

The lanyard lover This is by far the least severe offense on the list. Generally speaking, wearing a lanyard around your neck is considered a “freshman” move. If you feel confident enough to rock it, do you, but most people opt to keep it in a backpack or purse.

The high school obsessed There’s nothing wrong with being proud of your high school experience, but starting college is about new beginnings. Because of this, it’s probably best to save your high school t-shirts for pajamas and working out.

Yes, college classes are more difficult than what you may be accustomed to. You’ll probably feel the urge to frequently rant about your homework and stress in general, but you’ll get a lot more done if you spend more time actually doing your work than whining. Grab some coffee, find a study buddy and head to the library. It drives most upperclassmen crazy to hear freshmen complain, so keep in mind that you’ll be surrounded by people who might have 10x more on their plates than you do.

Driving around campus is chaotic enough without the added stress of slamming your brakes for a wayward student dodging across the street. Crosswalks are there for a reason, and in a bustling atmosphere like Mount Pleasant, it can be dangerous if you’re not following rules. On another note, don’t press the crosswalk button next to McGuirk Arena if there’s only a couple of cars coming your way; it’s the ultimate freshman move.

Going along with the theme of rule following, it’s important to know that it’s cooler to be a good kid than a bad kid. In college, no one will be impressed by recklessness and bad decisions. Life will be much easier for you if you choose to befriend your professors and RA rather than make their lives a living hell.

It may be tempting to call up your upperclassman friend for a ride every time you need to go somewhere, but keep in mind that they’ll be more likely to oblige if you chip in for gas money now and then.

No one likes a moocher.

Keep these “freshmen don’ts” in mind as you begin your undergraduate journey, and you’ll never have to worry about being that freshman. Good luck, and fire up chips!

As someone who has participated and led several breaks, I can tell you it is one of the best experiences of my undergraduate career.

I see Alternative Breaks as a way to learn and grow as an active citizen while

volunteering in a great program that gives back to the community.

I feel that every time I return from an Alternative Break I come back with a different lens of the U.S. Throughout the week I have had the chance to make amazing friends, complete incredible service projects and learn about fascinating cities. I usually feel that I have gotten more out of the break rather than the community partner we were serving with for the week.

Everyone fears the dreaded “freshman fifteen,” but avoiding it can be harder than you’d think.

With unlimited options in the residential restaurants, it can be quite difficult to take the healthy route. Luckily, eating healthy doesn’t need to be boring. There are plenty of ways to experiment with healthy options and learn how to eat a balanced diet while living on campus.

Make your own healthy wrap at the sandwich station! Start with a whole grain tortilla and then spread hummus in the middle. Then, fill your wrap with your choice of protein and a bunch of fresh veggies from the salad bar. Wrap it up and put it in the Panini maker until crispy and golden brown.

Special Events Greek Week

During the spring semester, the Greek community comes together as one to make a difference.

Talents in academics, athletics, and extracurricular activities are put on display throughout the week to raise moeny and awareness for a different cause each year. At the end of the week, Greek Mock Rock takes center stage. Lip syncing and dancing are the norms as well as colorful costumes.

CMU vs. WMU Blood Drive

If there is one thing you should know about CMU, it’s that we don’t mess around when it comes to giving back and beating Western. During the week before Central plays Western in football, students at CMU and WMU donate blood to the American Red Cross in a competition to see who can donate the greatest amount. The event is about coming together for a good cause, and to beat Western.

Siblings Weekend

Grab your siblings, nieces and nephews and gear get ready for a weekend of fun. Siblings Weekend brings thousands of CMU siblings to campus, where you can take part in a variety of different activities including a carnival, different entertainment acts and the excitement of living in the residence halls.

CMU Pow Wow

One of the most celebrated multicultural events in mid-Michigan, this event brings alive the spirit and history of Native Americans alongside CMU students. Traditional dancing, singing and cultural activities of Native American people take place during the celebration.

Football Cannon Shot

Don’t be alarmed if you hear a cannon shot go off at the football games. At Kelly Shorts Stadium after every CMU score, the ROTC students shoot a cannon to signify that we’re winning the battle.

CMU Fight Song

We take being a Chippewa here on campus very serious. That’s why it’s important to know our fight song word for word. Remember to sing it loud and proud!

Key Play

Make sure you bring your keys to every football game. During the football games, students will take their keys out and shake them, to showcase that it is a very important play.

Homecoming Cardboard Boat Race

Homecoming isn’t always all fun and games, sometimes it’s both!

A morning during Homecoming week, students in the industrial engineering programs build cardboard boats and put them to the test in the Rose Pond (near the Student Activity Center).

They sail the boats across the ponds, and the first team to the other side wins a trophy.

As a freshman at CMU, I was involved on campus and I had made a few friends, but as the months went on I just felt like something was missing. Being here didn’t feel like home and wanted to feel like I had a family on this campus.

I became interested in Greek Life when I saw all of the involvements that the greeks were a part of. I knew I wanted to learn more so I decided to go through recruitment with an open mind.

Within the first couple days of visiting each chapter and talking with some of the girls, I realized that greek life was even better than I ever imagined. Each girl was so passionate about their chapter and everything it had done for them and I knew that I was going to fall in love with my new home in a sorority.

On bid day, when I ran to my new sisters, I knew that I had found my missing piece here at CMU. My life has drastically changed since then just because I took a leap of faith and tried something new.

Now, I’m part of the programs council of my chapter, my sisters are my best friends, I’ve made other great friends within the greek community and I’ve had many opportunities to give back to my community.

I would tell anyone who’s considering going greek to just go through recruitment and try it out.

You really have nothing to lose and you’ll never know if greek life is for you unless you try it out.

From leadership, to academics, friendship, community, time management, philanthropy and the supportive home you will find within your chapter, Greek Life will give you some of the most amazing experiences and memories you’ll have during your college years.

The deep friendships I’ve made within the greek community have helped make CMU feel like home.

Balancing school, volunteering, socials, work, meetings, and philanthropy events has taught me how to manage my time better as a busy college student. Being involved with philanthropy and service projects has shaped my character in more ways than I ever imagined. Because of Greek Life, I’m surrounded by diverse, smart, supportive women and I’m challenged to be the best version of myself everyday because of them.

I truly believe that everyone can find a home away from home in greek life and it was one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve had so far in my college career.

As you prepare for your impending college adventure at CMU, you’re probably spending a lot of time wondering what residence hall life has in store for you. To ease your qualms about your upcoming dorm life experience, and to give you a glimpse into what your future, upperclassman life has in store, we’ve provided you with some comparisons of dorm life versus apartment life.

RES Life- You and your roommates will be living in very close quarters. Unless you live in one of the few “upperclassmen” dorms, chances are you will be sharing a room with at least one other person.

Your roommates will (most likely) become your closest friends, despite the inevitable petty disagreements over whose turn it is to clean the bathroom or take out the trash.

Apartment Life- You will have much more space and privacy, which definitely helps keep things more civil. Because of the kitchen, you’ll have to deal with more chores, but it’s nothing to worry about. Invest in a dry-erase chore calendar and update it regularly to make sure everyone is doing their fair share.

RES Life- Hello, dining commons!

One of the best aspects of living in the residence halls is that food is never far away. Depending on your meal plan, you will have a certain amount of flex dollars to use for snacks at on-campus establishments such as Starbucks, Subway and Freshens Energy Zone. In the dorms, there’s no need to ever worry about going hungry.

Apartment Life- For most people, grocery shopping becomes routine when they make the switch to living in an apartment. To be honest, it’s tough fitting time for shopping and cooking into your busy schedule, but you’ll adjust. You’ll still have the option to purchase a meal plan if you choose to do so, but most people don’t. To avoid eating out all of the time, it helps to create a fixed grocery budget for each week and set aside money for it.

RES Life- In most residence halls, you will have access to a washing machine and dryer located in the kitchenette on your floor. Depending on the residence hall you’re in, you can use either flex or quarters to run them. But let’s be honest, you’ll probably just take it home to mom.

Apartment Life- In most apartments, you’ll have your very own washer and dryer. This makes life much easier, but now there’s no excuse for mom to do your laundry.

There will be ups and down in both dorm life and apartment life, but no matter where you live, you’re sure to have some of the best times of your life in college.

The Office of Study Abroad at CMU study abroad provides students a world of opportunity as they learn in a foreign country.

One of the biggest reasons to study abroad is to experience a brand-new country through different activities, customs and outlooks. Take the time to tour natural wonders of the world, renowned museums and famous landmarks of your home country.

Plus, when you’re abroad, it is easy to visit other countries while you are there! Think about small trips that you can add on during your study abroad experience.

One of the best, and most nerve-racking, experiences is ‘culture shock’ or seeing the big differences between your country and the U.S. Learn about a country’s customs, traditions and value sets to find out what is important to them. Career Development.

After returning home from your study abroad experience, you will find a new appreciation for travel, culture and a willingness to learn.

Employers will be attracted to your passion in these areas as you seek a job position. If you put studying abroad on your resume, it will immediately stand out to future employers too. Who knows, you might even return to your host country to work!

Lifelong Friends.

Whether you are participating in a study abroad program as a group, or going solo, the friends you make while abroad will stay with you for life. These are the friends that become your family for the time that you are there, and it is hard to give them up when you’re home. Ultimately you are connected to this group in such a unique way that they will never fade from your life.

Ask anyone that has studied abroad in the past and they will all agree: you learn the most about yourself. All responsibility falls to you as you plan out your day, classes and other trips. Navigating a foreign country is a big task, especially if you are not familiar with the language, and it is one of the most rewarding sensations to accomplish it on your own. It is the best time to discover whom you are when you’re away from everything

that you know. You solely rely on yourself while abroad and that is the best opportunity to find yourself.

Everyone loves a good lunch buffet, especially when the buffet offers pizza, soup and salad. I recommend the chicken Alfredo pizza.

Max and Emily’s

when you are exploring downtown.

This sandwich shop has all the charm of downtown Mount Pleasant. There are more than 60 sandwiches to choose from along with baked goods, soups, salads and burgers. You will be hard-pressed not to find something you like.

The Brass Cafe

for a fancy date night.

If you and your date can’t decide where to go, dress up and head to The Brass Café. It offers higher-end food in a unique setting. You have to prepare to dish out a decent chunk of change, but The Brass Café is a good treat for special occasions.

Stanley’s Famous Restaurant for lazy Sunday mornings.

Stan’s has breakfast foods to your heart’s desire.

The restaurant also has lunch options, but Mount Pleasant locals have told me that breakfast is the true Stan’s experience.

The Malt Shop Cafe

Pixie is a blast from the past. Decorated as a 50s diner, you can enjoy burgers, Coney dogs, fries and shakes. If you need fast-food, but aren’t in the mood for a chain restaurant, Pixie is a good option.

If you want somewhere conveniently located, walk north end of campus and stumble across The Malt Shop Cafe. Besides pizza and wraps, there are dessert options like shakes and ice cream.

At Jon’s Country Burgers, you have the option to go in the restaurant or drive up, order and have your meal brought out on a tray that hooks to your car. The restaurant serves classic drivein options like burgers, sandwiches, fish and sundaes.

Mountain Town Station when your parents visit.

Mountain Town is a railroad station turned restaurant and microbrewery. It has upscale menu options with a more casual atmosphere.

When the weather is warm, Mountain Town has outdoor seating options to enjoy a peaceful area of downtown Mount Pleasant.

The Diner

on the outskirts of town.

Located on South Mission, The Diner offers classic American options. When you feel like going on a little Mount Pleasant adventure for comfort food, The Diner is the place to go.

Exploring local restaurants was a great study distraction. Before you graduate, make it a goal to find your favorite Mount Pleasant restaurant.
