FORMER CMU QUARTERBACK LEFEVOUR ANNOUNCES PROFESSIONAL RETIREMENT Former Central Michigan quarterback and three-time Mid-American Conference champion Dan LeFevour announced his retirement Feb. 10 on Twitter. “It’s been a heck of a ride,” LeFevour tweeted. “But there is a time and a place for everything. It’s time for my family and I to move on to the next chapter.” LeFevour played quarterback from 2006-2009. During that time, he threw for 12,905 yards and 102 touchdowns. He also ran for 2,948 yards with a program-
Dan LeFevour high 47 rushing touchdowns. In 2009, he was named MVP of the MAC Championship game. He was named MAC Offensive Player of the Year in 2007 and 2009.
The former CMU star was selected by the Chicago Bears in the sixth round of the 2010 NFL Draft. LeFevour bounced around the league as a third-string quarterback and spent time on multiple practice squads, but left for the Canadian Football League in 2012. ANOTHER BUDGET DEFICIT NOT ANTICIPATED BASED ON MOST RECENT ENROLLMENT DATA Based on the release of its most recent enrollment, Central Michigan University does not anticipate another budget deficit, said Vice President for Finance and Administrative Services Barrie Wilkes. CMU’s listed enrollment for the Fall 2017 semester is 23,335 — about 4 percent less than Fall 2016 totals. Lower than expected enrollment and state appropriations contributed to a $20 million budget shortfall for the 2016-17 and 2017-18 fiscal years for the university. After CMU's Fall 2017 enrollment release, Wilkes said student credit hours
decreased 1.6 percent more than predicted, calling it a manageable rate. “We always every year match our revenues and expenses,” Wilkes said. “If revenues are slightly below budget, we just manage expenses so we can have a positive bottom-line for the university.” Gov. Rick Snyder released his budget recommendations on Feb. 7 for the next fiscal year. Snyder’s proposed budget has fiscal year 2019 state appropriations at about $87 million for CMU. Snyder included a tuition restraint language of 3.8 percent, which Wilkes said was expected. As part of
Snyder’s proposed budget for fiscal years 2019 and 2020, universities will be required to limit any tuition increases they adopt to receive funding. The maximum increase equates to 3.8 percent, according to the budget. Wilkes said CMU has usually been in the 2-2.5 percent range. As for possible tuition increases for next year, Wilkes said it is too early to tell. “Keeping the rate of tuition increases low has been a priority of the board and the administration,” Wilkes said. -Evan Sasiela University Editor

EVOLUTION OF DATING, Experts, faculty members talk about how consent has become an important aspect in sexual activity, evolution of hookup By Ashley Schafer Staff Reporter

n the era of the #MeToo and Time's Up movements, the question of consent’s place in sexual activity is becoming a more prevalent discussion in today’s society. In a recent article published by Babe, a woman described her experience “hooking up” with comedian Aziz Ansari in which she felt Ansari did not take her consent into consideration. The story sparked a nationwide conversation on what consent is and how people give it. Since the 1980s, the term "hooking up" has found its way onto college campuses as a norm for dating. This umbrella term refers to anything physical, said Kathleen Bogle, sociology professor at LaSalle University Kathleen Bogle. Bogle is also the author of “Hooking Up: Sex, Dating, and Relationships on Campus.” The shift from traditional dating began in the 1960s and 1970s and has transitioned from one-on-one approaches to more people hanging out in large groups, Bogle said. The traditional style focused on dating that eventually led to physical activity, whereas now, relationships tend to start with physical activity, then potentially leads to dating, Bogle said. “It can be a one-night stand, but it can also be the beginning of hanging out with someone," Bogle said in regards to hook-up culture. "It also can be the beginning of a long-term relationship.” She pointed out there are several people who aren't interested in the hooking-up style of dating, but some people are pressured into it because it is perceived as a norm.

Consent to sexual activity must be freely given by all persons involved, otherwise it becomes sexual assault. This means being explicit about expectations, assumptions and desires, said Brooke Oliver-Hempenstall, director of Sexual Aggression Services at Central Michigan University. “The key to consent is, are you communicating with the person, regardless of how you met and how you came to be,” Oliver-Hempenstall said. “Are you communicating the whole way through?” Consent is also necessary regardless of the duration of your relationship, and it is revocable at any point in time, she added.
“Not only does consent need to be freely given, but it’s revocable, and anyone can change their mind,” she said. “Regardless if they’re married, been together for years, just started dating or just met.” Consent to sexual activity shouldn’t be placed in a separate category from other things in life. Bogle suggested consent should be the exact same way — everyone is in complete control of when they would like to engage in sexual activity and when they would like it to stop. There should never be a point where someone is “stuck” and can’t get out of it. Bogle said nonverbal communication such as facial expressions and gestures isn’t enough to give proper consent. With the advancement of dating apps and instant messaging, nonverbal communication is becoming more common in modern day dating culture. Central Michigan Life reached out to Katherine Lasher, CMU’s Title IX coordinator for this story but she did not respond to numerous emails or requests for a phone or sit down interview.
DATING IN 2018 Assistant Professor of Communication Alysa Lucas, who conducts research on sexual communication, believes dating has become ambiguous and confusing. “Technology takes out the nonverbal (aspect), so you have to use emojis,” Lucas said. “But what are the emojis? Now peach and eggplant mean so many different things that you’re like, ‘it was just food — now what does it mean?’” Meeting someone online can be ambiguous because Lucas notes
there is a typical “talking” phase of relationships, where the commitment between people isn’t clearly defined. “There were these steps that were taken (before), and now it’s ‘I think I’m talking to someone,’” Lucas said. “Well, what does that mean if you’re talking to someone?” While the internet can act as a buffer-zone for people who feel uncomfortable talking face-to-face, it can also be a platform for

deceit and unrealistic expectations, Lucas said. “Now it’s like swipe this way, swipe that way and it’s based on pictures and very little information,” Lucas said. When it comes to the topic of consent, Lucas thinks humans may be missing a few important scripts with the rise of technology in the dating world. “We have scripts for job interviews and how you should dress and everything, but we don’t necessarily have that for technology,” Lucas said. “And I don’t know that we have that for consent. I don’t think that we’re taught what that means.” Bogle thinks it is unrealistic to impose scripts, such as the "yes means yes" campaign that started on college campuses in California. "I think that we're going to have a huge backlash against this sexual assault movement if we say people have to be mind-readers and figure it out," Bogle said. "People have to every 30 seconds say 'is it OK if I do that?' 'is it OK if I touch here?' I just don't see that as a realistic way for sex to happen." Rather, she suggests answers such as bystander education and intervention. In the cases where alcohol is involved, someone else could step in if people are too drunk to consent. Simply creating the awareness that people should never assume someone is okay with doing something physical.
EDUCATION AS THE SOLUTION According to RAINN, the amount of sexual violence in the U.S. has dropped by more than half since 1993. Although there was a decline, sexual violence is more prevalent on college campuses compared to other crimes, and more times than not, it isn’t
reported to law enforcement. If it isn’t the norm to talk about sex, people may choose to opt out of the conversation altogether — which is what Lucas sees as the problem. “Research on sex will say that people have sex before they talk about sex,” Lucas said. “When I ask in my gender class, ‘why don’t you just say hey are you into this?’ the students laugh like that’s embarrassing. But what’s embarrassing about consent? What’s embarrassing about being explicit and knowing that people are into it?” Bogle has come across similar reactions from her students about the topic. People use "vibes" and unwritten rules to assess how someone else is feeling about the relationship. “It’s kind of against the norms, when you’re talking about communication, to really at any point with a hook-up in the early stages, say ‘What is this?’ ‘What do you want?’ ‘What do you want to happen here?’” Bogle said. “It can be seen as kind of a buzzkill.” Lucas said a solution to this communication impediment can begin with education — preferably before coming to college. “The more you think about and practice what (consent) might be, it’s going to be easier to say it when you’re in that situation,” Lucas said. If someone isn’t comfortable having that conversation, OliverHempenstall said they may need to rethink engaging in any activity until they are ready. While the topic of consent and the question of what it is has been in the news lately, Lucas said conversation and education are only the first steps to the solution. “I do think we’re moving to a place where there are more conversations because of campaigns like the Larry Nassar case and the Harvey Weinstein (allegations),” Lucas said. “A lot has been happening in our society and very quickly. Those are opportunities to have conversations, but if we’re only having conversations and we’re not doing anything to make changes, then (sexual harassment and assault) might continue.”

As Feb. 14 approaches, love is in the air — which means different things for different people, depending on your relationship status. As we grow older, Valentine’s Day moves away from the time of paper card and candy giving and into the territory of Instagram shots of fancy dates and Snapchat stories of grandiose expressions of love. And in the era of social media envy, that can be especially hard as you watch your friends in relationships go out Feb. 14 while you binge watch yet another Netflix show you’ve already seen before. Valentine’s Day can be especially challenging if you’re single or just got out of a relationship. For some
EDITORIAL students, this can be a conflicting time because it could be the first chance they have to date as a gay or lesbian student hailing from a small town with an even tinier LGBT population in it. But the secret to Valentine’s Day is this: It’s just another day. In the grand scheme of things, whether you have a date this Wednesday or not won’t matter in
due time. It might not even matter in a week. The era of finding yourself at college has been redefined since our parent’s day and age. It’s no longer about going to school to find a partner. It’s about seeking an education and bettering yourself. It’s about finding what makes you you, and then figuring out a way to translate that into a career or a passion. It’s also about learning how to be happy — not forcing yourself into a relationship in order to fit an outdated, preconceived notion that you have to meet your future spouse by graduation. That’s not just silly, it’s becoming
more statistically unlikely. A 2013 study indicated only 28 percent of people attended the same college as their future spouse, according to USA Today, although — in all fairness — that number increased exponentially when considering religious colleges. Don’t make yourself miserable this Valentine’s Day. It’s a day for expressions of love — so get your roommates together and go out to Olive Garden or find your best friend and hang out at The Bird Bar & Grill. You don’t have to be romantically linked to spend Valentine’s Day with people you love and appreciate. Having a happy Valentine’s Day doesn’t start and end with being in a relationship. It begins by doing what makes you happy.

Biology professor discusses science of attraction, mate choice By Sara Kellner Staff Reporter

A Central Michigan University professor has some knowledge on the science of love. Wiline Pangle of the Department of Biology studies the relationship between animal behavior and environmental conditions. At Central Michigan University, the behavioral ecologist teaches courses pertaining to animal behavior, evolution and ecology. She also teaches general biology classes for biology majors and non-majors. Every spring around Valentine’s Day, Pangle lectures students in her non-major biology class about the science of love. Pangle sat down with Central Michigan Life to discuss the biology of love and attraction.

CM Life: What is the most important thing we should know about attraction? Pangle: We don’t pick as freely as we might think. We are the product of natural selection, so we are pre-programmed to do what has worked in the past. We think we choose our partners because they are nice or funny, but
we also choose them because they smell good and have a different immune system from us. The reason we find someone attractive may be more based on biology and natural selection than we may think. What makes someone attractive? In humans, we have what are called “honest cues” of reproduction. These honest cues are representative of your reproductive system’s success. If you are fertile, you will have cues of fertility. We play a game with students
and have them look at four photos of the same man, slightly modified, and have them choose which one is most attractive. They almost always mimic the research that’s been done and choose the face with the most testosterone. We also have them look at two photos of the same woman, one of which was taken while she was ovulating, the other when she was not. It’s a very subtle difference, but 90 percent of the students pick the ovulating photo. Why are we attracted to these cues?

and choose which one they liked best. There are a couple things that are cool about these experiments, such as: • If you put a parent-child pair in the mix, the smell is repulsive for them, which is a way to avoid inbreeding. This is the same with siblings. • Women who are ovulating are by far the most picked T-shirts. We don’t know how we detect ovulation, it’s just something that smells good. • Another interesting trend is the more different our immune system is from the person who wore the shirt, the more attracted we are to the smell. This makes sense because in the grand scheme of things, you want your kid to get different immune systems from parents, so they are protected from as much stuff as possible.

There’s something about features that we subconsciously choose because they worked for our predecessors. We’re hardwired to pick up on these cues. We have no idea why we choose the photo we do. We think we are picking a mate because of choice, when really we are influenced by all sorts of things in our subconscious. What are some other cues? Hip-to-waist ratio, smells or symmetry of the face are thought to be most important. There is some data on breast size, which suggests having bigger breasts means you’re more reproductive. "When I was a sophomore in high school, I was asked to homecoming by one of my friends. I was actually dating somebody else at the time, but (my friend) went to an all-boys Catholic school, so you couldn't actually go (to the dance) without a date. We got Mongolian barbecue beforehand, and he was very nervous the entire time, even though we were friends. It was very awkward dancing with him. A lot of people (at the dance) were grinding on each other, and he tried to grind behind me. I had to actually leave the dance floor and be like 'I'm sorry, I can't do this.' When my mom came to pick me up, I was like 'I had a nice time, I'll see you around.' I hugged him and gave him a kiss on the cheek as a nice gesture, and as I was pulling away, he threw up in the garbage can. We didn't really talk much after that."

SGA leadership looks to improve communication with student body By Quinn Kirby Staff Reporter news@cm-life.com
Student Government Association leaders are attempting to reach out to the student body, but the leaders feel they may not be receiving a response. Less than half of the Registered Student Organizations on campus are represented at regular meetings. The Fall 2017 semester’s Student Body Town Hall Meeting garnered 40 attendees and the organization has recognized students’ indifference. SGA President Anna Owens said students need to decide if paying attention to student government is worth their time. “One of the barriers (we have) is reaching everybody,” Owens said. “You know, priorities — you’re a

student first. Most peoples’ priority is to go to class, do homework (and to be) working. They have to be able to afford it.” While it is leadership’s job to teach students about resources SGA can provide, Vice President
Derek Sturvist said they cannot force students to get involved. “(Students) all have their own lives,” he said. “Who knows? Maybe they’re working two jobs to pay for school.” House Leader Drake Smarch
said while the SGA senate has a GroupMe for its discussions, it would be counterintuitive to create a GroupMe for the more than 200 representatives he oversees. “Communicating our standards for general members
comes in the form of emails from (Membership Director JiJi Lee), while our expectations and our standards for cabinet members are expressed at our weekly board meetings,” Smarch said. Sturvist said although there will occasionally be an RSO representative who is passionate about SGA, general members don’t usually see the importance of what they’re doing at meetings. “They’re normally there because they want to do something good for their RSO,” he said. In order to be eligible for funding available through the Student Budget Allocation Committee, representatives must attend meetings. Owens said cancelling meetings isn’t an option. Discussion revolves around reviewing the previous week’s meeting, planning the next and receiving
updates from cabinet members. “Trying to pick a meeting time for 24 people (is) really difficult,” Owens said. “Our cabinet is made up of some of the most involved people on campus. Point blank — we are all involved in other things.” In personal meetings with leadership, Owens was told to “respond faster.” She said she has recognized that downfall in her own communication, adding that she can get an email, a text and a call before responding to the original message. Owens said the Facebook live stream of last semester’s Student Body Town Hall reached 1,416 people while only 40 people physically showed up to the event. “We’ve gotten the best turnout on Facebook live events,” Owens said. “We’re going to see if that can shift things a little bit.”

A Mount Pleasant restaurant and popular weekend eatery will make its television debut 9 p.m. Feb. 12 on the Travel Channel. Dog Central will be featured on the sixth season of “Man v. Food” following filming on-location Nov. 30. Host Casey Webb will be competing in the Dog Central Challenge. The restaurant will be hosting a special viewing party for the event from 5-11 p.m. the day of the show. Food and drink specials include $1 baskets of fries and $3 MacDaddys — a hot dog topped with bacon and macaroni and cheese. The challenge featured on the episode requires
contestants to completely eat three-foot-long chili hot dogs accompanied by two toppings, a stack of onion rings, a 20-ounce drink and an order of fries. If Webb succeeds in the episode, he will receive an original T-shirt, $10 prize and doesn’t have to pay for the meal. Failure results in a $25 bill. The Dog Central challenge is one of several challenges available at the restaurant that customers can compete in during normal business hours 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Thursday through Saturday. In a previous interview with Central Michigan Life, Dog Central owner and Central Michigan University alumnus Paul McFall said
the Travel Channel was attracted to Dog Central’s food challenge and collegetown location. In November, McFall said he was thrilled by the opportunity and was looking forward to showcasing a Michigan made hot dog on television. McFall could not be reached for a comment on the episode’s airing. “Man v. Food” has been on air since 2008 and showcases venues throughout the U.S. Dog Central will be following visits to eateries in California, Pennsylvania and Vermont. -Samantha Shriber,

Alumna to have play performed in London By Melissa Frick Staff Reporter news@cm-life.com
It's been two months since Claire-Frances Sullivan earned her Music Theater degree from Central Michigan University, and she is already taking her playwriting talents internationally. Sullivan was selected to have her play showcased in March at Talos, a London science fiction theater festival. She has experience in acting, writing plays and composing musicals. She received training as a playwriting apprentice at the Powerhouse Theater Training Company in New York. Central Michigan Life spoke with Sullivan about her science-fiction play "Close Encounters," her playwriting and plans for the future. CM Life: How do you go about writing a play? Sullivan: It really depends. One of the biggest things I learned over the summer as a playwriting student was that it has to be bad before it can be good. I think the way you write a play is to just start writing and let it not be good for a while, if that makes sense. You can always go back and rewrite and edit and change, but you can’t edit a blank paper. Can you describe the play you’re going to have produced in London? It’s called "Close Encounters." It’s also going to be shown at CMU in April. When I sat down to write it, I wanted (my characters) to be abducted by aliens. But it’s not really a play about getting abducted by aliens — it’s more of a play about loneliness. It’s kind of funny, but it’s also a play about being lonely together. How did you get into playwriting? I’ve always written my own music. When I was in high school, I came out with an (extended play) and it was really cheesy. I was young, but I always have liked writing my own music. My sophomore year of college, me and my friends did a song cycle poetry thing, where (one friend) wrote a bunch of poems and I wrote a bunch of songs, and we put it up as a show at CMU. That was kind of my first produced work at CMU. Originally, I wasn’t going to write a script for that — I didn’t have anybody to write the script for me. I just decided to write the script myself because I had never done anything like that before, but I always wrote my own music so it just made sense to me. Did that script lead to anything? I used that script for that musical to apply for this playwright program in New York called the Powerhouse Theater Company and they did an apprenticeship program. It was really cool to do
Claire-Frances Sullivan that because all of a sudden, I was writing plays all summer. It was funny because I kept calling myself a playwright, which was weird because I never called myself that before. What are your plans with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theater? One thing I love about doing Musical Theater as a degree is that it’s a triple major — I have an emphasis in acting, singing and dancing. Because of that, I get to create my own career and do what I want. When I move to New York, I’ll actually be able to write plays and perform, depending on my free time. What has been one of your favorite plays you’ve written? My favorite play that I wrote was probably the one that’s going on in London, "Close Encounters," just because when I took a playwriting class, we would always have to sit down and write a play and I would just think to myself, “Okay, what’s the most ridiculous thing I can make my professor read?” In “Close Encounters,” I said, “How can I make these characters get abducted by aliens and have that make sense?” Tell me about Talos, the contest in London. It’s a young festival that’s been going on for four years, I think, and it’s focused on science-fiction theater specifically. It’s around the end of March. I think there were 12 total plays selected. I feel really lucky. Will you be going to London to see your play? It’s at the end of March, so it kind of depends on if I have any money. As of right now, probably not. Anything else you’d like to share about yourself? I've been commissioned by Midland Center for the Arts to write a play adaptation of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens and you can go see it this December at Midland Center for the Arts.

Moore Hall TV to air first student-scripted show Feb. 12 By Ashley Schafer Staff Reporter news@cm-life.com
After an entire semester of writing, shooting and editing, Moore Hall Television will air season one of its first student-led, scripted narrative, “Seven Deadly” on Feb. 12. The show, which will follow a different story each season, will be released in the form of five 30-minute episodes. Viewers can watch the show at 9 p.m. on campus, MHTV channel 26.2, off campus on cable, channel 189, or on Vimeo starting Feb. 14. The story follows seven characters who each represent one of the seven deadly sins. The first season will focus on a girl named Peyton on her birthday night as she throws a party and invites her crush. The season follows the night, with flashbacks highlighting her past, as well as the pasts of other members of the main cast. “They’re all connected through their sin in some way, and that’s the main idea we’re bringing through season to season,” Assistant Producer Gabrielle Sikora said. nate event,” every episode draws from flashbacks and different perspectives to bring more information to light for the audience. It took the crew the entire Fall 2017 semester to film season one, and edits are still being made. While the production equipment was borrowed, the time and money spent on the project all came from the students who put work into making the show. The idea for “Seven Deadly” started with former Central Michigan University student Monjoa Likine, who helped produce the first season. She has since graduated. While season one of “Seven Deadly” airs
this semester, the all-student cast and crew are already producing season two, which will air in the fall. Production for the second season is being led by Farmington Hills junior and Executive Producer Leah Robinson, Lake Fenton senior and Director Nick Forbush and Taylor freshman Gabrielle Sikora. “It was a huge project — taking people from different majors and backgrounds and putting them on screen, giving them lines and making it a whole cohesive story,” Robinson said. Sikora was recruited to be part of the crew before she had started her first semester at CMU, having zero experience in production. Working on “Seven Deadly” has already shaped her college experience, she said. “I feel like I have so many connections now, with so many different people that I would have never met before this,” Sikora said. “We all got so close so quick.” Sikora recalls shooting scenes in a hot bedroom — being close to her fellow crew members with large equipment in a small space, and how it brought them together. For the second season, the crew is taking a much more cinematic approach and making it into a single hour-and-a-half long film. While the
seven sins theme will continue, it will have a completely new, unrelated plot to the first season. “Even the way that we shoot is going to be different (from season one),” Robinson said. Auditions for season two took three hours without a break, Robinson said. They rewrote the script and adjusted roles to accommodate more of the talented people who auditioned. “I think it was really important to give those people the platform,” Robinson said. “If they have the talent, why not give them the platform to do it?” Since last season, the crew members have improved upon their experience, saving time and keeping their schedule more organized. Being more organized includes planning back-up shoots in case of inclement weather or other unexpected mishaps, and staying on top of the props they need for each shoot. “We definitely are focusing a lot more on the pre-production aspect, which I feel like will help a lot more,” Sikora said. The students who brought “Seven Deadly” to life are looking forward to its release date. “I’m excited for the fact that people are going to be able to watch it and know that it’s student run,” Robinson said. “We did not have help from anyone.”

Women's basketball hasn’t lost MAC game in gold jerseys

Following two December losses to Duquesne and Quinnipiac, Central Michigan women's basketball head coach Sue Guevara knew a change was needed. Guevara knew her lineup wasn't a problem, and neither were the play calls. The Chippewas needed to wear their gold jerseys, Guevara said. "It's a golden anniversary — the 50th anniversary of women's basketball," Guevara said. "We lost at home against Quinnipiac in our white (jerseys) and we lost on the road in maroon (jerseys) at Duquesne. So, I thought, 'Let's just stay in the gold.'" At Ball State in the gold jerseys, the Chippewas snapped their two-game losing streak and defeated the Cardinals, 69-65, on Dec. 30. Guevara’s theory might be true.

Most of the Chippewas do not buy into Guevara's superstition, but support her theories. "It wasn't really our decision. It was more of coach's decision," said senior guard Cassie Breen. "She's just superstitious." Over her career, Guevara said she's had her fair share of jersey superstitions. But, she's never had a superstition like CMU's "Team 50" — the name she uses for the 50th anniversary women’s basketball team. "I don't know if it's ever been this long," Guevara said. "I think I've had some superstition with the uniforms before but probably not for this many games." CMU is used to having a target on its back as it has led the conference for the past two seasons. The Chippewas were picked to win the MAC prior to the start of the 2017-18 season. "We're pretty used to it," Breen said. "(Having to play harder) trickles down to the sophomores and juniors."

When John Bonamego walked on to the Central Michigan football team in 1984, he put on his shoulder pads in the same locker room the 2017 football team used. Now, the head coach thinks it’s time for an upgrade to the building which was built in 1972. CMU Athletics announced plans Feb. 6 for a “Chippewa Champions Center” on the north side of Kelly/Shorts Stadium. The building plans include a new football locker room, a rehabilitation center, nutrition center and spaces for alumni and the CMU Advancement team. “It is very, very exciting,” Bonamego said. “It’s much

needed and quite frankly a little bit overdue.” An estimated date for completion has not yet been released. In a press release, Athletic Director Michael Alford said he is still in the early stages of fundraising,
but there is “strong interest” in the renovations. Alford has a long background in fundraising and development during his time with the Dallas Cowboys and Oklahoma Sooners. Vice President for Advancement Robert Martin was
hired because of his strong background in fundraising, according to a press release from University Communications. Bonamego said the estimated cost of the facility is roughly $30 million. He said the facility will be
primarily paid for via donations. Western Michigan University built something similar in summer 2016, when they renovated its Bill Brown Alumni Football Center, which was originally built in 1998. The alumni center features suites, coaches and players’ offices and a weight room. This football center is close to the proposed idea of the “Chippewa Champions Center.” However, CMU Athletics said athletes from all sports will be able to access the facility. “Other programs around us and within our conference have probably pushed ahead of us a little bit from a facility standpoint,” Bonamego said. “This project will make a gigantic difference in not only the day-today operations of our program, but the future of our program.”

The football team’s goal is to attract the “very brightest and best” recruits, Bonamego said. “This facility is going to really enhance our chances when competing head-to-head with (other schools for recruits),” he said. The facility is being designed by noted architectural firm Populous, which has built sport facilities and stadiums all over the world, notably Comerica Park in Detroit. Bonamego has been active in the design and coordination of the event. He has already had three meetings with Populous, he said. “The great thing about this building is that it’s going to benefit the whole campus,” Bonamego said. “I wish we could get a shovel in the ground tomorrow.”

John and Paulette Bonamego may have never crossed paths without the Jacksonville Jaguars team mascot. The Central Michigan head coach was in his second year of a three-year stint as an assistant coach for the Jaguars 18 years ago when he was introduced to Paulette by Jaxson de Ville — the Jaguars mascot. He invited Paulette to Dairy Queen where he expressed his interest to, one day, return to Central Michigan University. Paulette was hesitant. She wasn’t interested in dating someone with such a busy schedule as a football coach, and wasn’t fascinated with the cold weather in Mount Pleasant. But, as history would have it, Paulette became a Bonamego later that year. Just days before Valentine’s Day, Central Michigan Life listed some of the Bonamego’s greatest moments.

GYMNASTICS The Chippewas earned their fifth win of the season at Illinois State Feb. 9. This was the second time CMU has beaten Illinois State this season. Seniors Bryttany Kaplin and Katy Clements both won two events against
Illinois State. The Chippewas will return to McGuirk Arena at 1 p.m. Feb. 18 to take on Kent State.
WRESTLING Chippewa seniors shined on Senior Night in McGuirk Arena Feb. 9. The meet was delayed by two hours due to weather conditions, but that didn’t stop CMU from earning a 29-7 win against Eastern Michigan.
