GRIFFIN FORUM TO BRING AMBASSADOR TO DISCUSS BUILDING BETTER COMMUNITIES At the Griffin Policy Forum, panelists will discuss the importance of building better communities at 7 p.m. Feb. 18 in the Central Michigan University Charles V. Park Library Auditorium. The forum discussion will feature speaker Delano Lewis Sr., a former U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of South Africa. He will be joined by his son, Geoffrey P. Lewis, and Kevin Essebaggers, an anchor for 9&10 News, who will serve as the moderator. Panelists will explore how passion, power, politics and purpose play important roles in the vibrancy of communities. The first 50 people to arrive to the forum will receive a free copy of Lewis’ book, “It All Begins With Self.” “I hope students and guests from the surrounding community will leave with a deeper understanding of how we are all connected, and that each of us can do something to help make the lives of each other better by unleashing our passion with purpose,” said Griffin Chair and
political science and public administration faculty member David Rutledge. Rutledge will open the forum by introducing Richard Rothaus, dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences. Rothaus will welcome the audience and then introduce the forum moderator Essebaggers. Following keynote Lewis, Essebaggers will conduct a “living room style” interview with the ambassador and his son. “As the Griffin Chair in Political Science, I’m honored to have the privilege of framing relevant topics and bringing together experts including political leaders to discuss those topics,” Rutledge said. “My goal is not only to bring to our campus relevant topics and knowledgeable speakers, but to do it in a way that elevates our consciousness of both the diversity of people and opinions.” -Zoe Newman, Staff Reporter

Trustees discuss university enrollment, athletics at formal meeting Feb. 14 By Melissa Frick University Editor news@t
Central Michigan University’s “Fire Up for Excellence” capital campaign has raised $101,654,498, exceeding its initial goal. Trustees received a update from Campaign Chair Michael O’Donnell and Vice President for Advancement Robert Martin, during the Feb. 14 board meeting in the Bovee University Center. The campaign was created in July 2015. It formally launched in Fall 2018. The goal to raise $100 million was achieved in under four years. “When we put together this campaign goal of $100 million, everyone said we were nuts,”
O’Donnell said. “I said, give it seven to eight years.” The campaign will continue until through the fall, ending with an official celebration around homecoming. At that point, a bigger campaign will be revealed, which O’Donnell said will aim for between $300-$500 million. While part of the money is designated to go toward athletics, 82 percent of the donations raised are designated to fund CMU academics through scholarships and student research. “We wanted our donors to give what they were passionate to give to, and that was mostly need-based and merit-based scholarships,” Martin said. Several fundraising records were broken during the campaign, including raising over $20 million each year over three consecutive

years, and receiving more than 23 gifts of $1 million or more. “This is an example of CMU believing in itself and not thinking small,” said Trustee Todd over the phone, who was unable to attend his first meeting in-person. “No one thought this was achievable, but we thought bigger and stretched ourselves.” Despite declining enrollment, President Robert Davies said the enthusiasm shown by alumni and other donors provides substantial financial investment as well as a vote of confidence in the direction the university is heading. “We talk a lot about the enrollment struggles that are ahead of us,” he said. “This gives us great optimism and opportunity to move forward.” Enrollment was a key point of discussion at the board of trustees formal session and committee meetings. Last week, Davies published an open letter regarding the university’s enrollment challenges. By doing so, he opened up the conversation to faculty, students and alumni to engage in a robust discussion about CMU’s future and finding a right size for the institution. “The responses (from the CMU community) I’ve received have been outstanding,” he said. “I will be reading all the emails I’ve received, and responding.” CMU will increase outreach in areas like Grand Rapids and metro Detroit to combat this decline, Davies said. The university will also encourage collaborations in departments across the university. “This will not be an easy road,” he said. “Recovery will not come over night. Our campus is prepared to achieve this quest.” The next step for the board in addressing this decline will be preparing a preliminary outline of steps to take, said Trustee Richard Studley. Next year, trustees will revise those reports and solicit feedback. “Everyone here is here because we love CMU,” Studley said. “We’re not here to do
nothing — we’re going to get back on the track to growth by focusing on rigor and excellence.” Athletic Director Michael Alford spoke to trustees about intercollegiate athletics, and how CMU athletics have aligned students with the educational mission of the university. Alford said CMU is one of 13 schools that have never had a Level II NCAA violation, which the collegiate sports association website defines as a “significant breach of conduct” of bylaws. He also said the graduation success rate of student athletes is at 80 percent — as compared to the rest of the student body which has a 61 percent success rate. “This is because of our constituents and fundraising,” Alford said. CMU athletics is set to have another “marvelous year” for fundraising and will continue to align with nurturing student success, he said. CMU athletics also employs more than 400 students, which is an important career training experience for students, Alford said. Additional successes Alford shared include an ongoing sweat study with each of CMU’s sports teams and nutritional counseling for student athletes. Trustees received a presentation from Erin Strang, CEO and president of CMU Research Corporation. She said CMURC wants to develop Mount Pleasant’s “SmartZones.” Those are locations where technology-based firms, entrepreneurs and researchers locate in close proximity to all of the community assets that assist in their endeavors. Strang said that part of university land on the south end of campus is part of Mount Pleasant’s SmartZone. The board of trustees is responsible for the university’s land leases. As CMURC moves forward, potential growth in the area will first be brought in front of the board for review. Davies also gave updates on several ongoing leadership searches. He said the search for the new College of Business Administration dean will be extended by four weeks. The president anticipates all of the ongoing searches will wrap up this semester, or over the summer.

Wheeler Hall racial incident refers to dating hall fundraiser as a ‘slave auction’ By Samantha Shriber Staff Reporter news@cm-life.com
The series of racial incidents taking place on campus continued Feb.11, when a residence hall’s fundraiser was compared to a “slave auction.” Wheeler Hall, located in the Towers residential building at Central Michigan University, hosted its third charity date auction to raise money for the Humane Society. Before the event at 8:30 p.m., a third-floor resident posted a Snapchat story with the caption, “Prepare to buy your boi at the slave auction.” A screen shot of the image was taken by a resident and sent to Wheeler Hall’s Inclusion Assistant and Residence Hall Director. An announcement was made by the RHD, calling the caption offensive. This event follows several other incidents which have taken place at CMU throughout the 2018-19 academic year. A whiteboard in Sweeney Hall was covered with racist and misogynistic language and was followed by an appearance of propaganda promoting the “Blood and Soil” white nationalistic slogan. President Robert Davies said he found out about the Feb. 11 incident at the Board of Trustees Trustee-Student Liaison Committee meeting on Feb. 13. Sparta junior Australyah Coleman, president of CMU’s chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP),

said the continuation of these events will negatively affect enrollment. “If I was a student that was picking my college I would have a hard time coming to Central seeing the amount of events that have taken place in the past three months and not seeing the responses we need,” Coleman said. Coleman is also the Assistant Secretary of the Michigan State Conference Youth and College Division and oversees all collegiate chapters throughout Michigan and their youth divisions. “They haven’t had as many (incidents) as we’ve had in the pass three months,” she said. “I think that speaks a
lot.” Student Government Association Vice President Lyndi Rose said the administration’s lack of response to the incident adds to a lack of transparency and communication throughout the university. At the meeting, Wheeler Hall’s IA Ambrean Ford, a Detroit senior, said the event further expands the divide students of color experience at CMU, which she hears about on a daily basis. “With what happened on Monday, I really hope that administration understand that your response is the real answer if they belong here,” Ford said.

Community plungers raise more than $65,000 for Special Olympics By Rachael Yadlowsky Staff Reporter news@cm-life.com
Mount Pleasant community members raised more than $65,000 on Saturday, Feb. 16 to help fund Special Olympics Michigan during this year’s Polar Plunge. About 300 people took the plunge into a freezing pool of water in support of the Special Olympic program and the many athletes that participate in it. The Polar Plunge is an annual event held in Michigan during which plungers and spectators donate money to charity. Many participants will form groups to raise more money and dress up in costumes or come up with themes for their team. This year saw an increase in plungers and in donations from last year, when about 250 plungers took the dive and $60,000 was raised. Many groups wore costumes including “The Wizard of Oz,” superheroes, tropical tourists and other characters. Adult Special Olympics athlete Eugene Comstock was the
first to take the plunge. He has been plunging for 11 years. Although he wasn’t able to jump into the water, his team dressed as “hillbillies” jumped for him and then helped him walk back down the stairs of the diving platform. Dax Smitt, 22, Mount Pleasant, took the plunge with a group of his coworkers dressed as superheroes. “We felt like superheroes for helping to support the Special Olympics, so we thought that we would dress like them,” Smitt said. “It was a lot of fun.” Community members began diving at 11:30 a.m. The weather outside was about 20 degrees and the water temperature in the pool was just below 40 degrees. Julia Wysee, a 54-year-old from Clare, was in the first wave of people to dive into the water. “The water was only 37 degrees?” she asked, surprised. “It felt like it was so much colder. But it was so fun and very worth it, a friend of mine has a cousin that participates in Special Olympics and she loves it so much.” As plungers lined up to jump, they nervously talked to each other and tried to hype themselves up. As they stood on the platform, many hesitated before jumping in and
coming out gasping at the cold. One of the groups of plungers who didn’t hesitate at the platform was the Mount Pleasant Public Safety officials. Once it was clear to jump in, each official jumped in with no problem, some even belly-flopped into the water and splashed spectators in the front row. One lone plunger described the jump as intense, but fun. “It was so intense and cold, and I expected the water to be cold, of course, but it’s a shock to the body,” said 30-yearold Mount Pleasant resident Tom Helding, “It was crazy in the moment, but afterward, when I was out of the water and I remembered that the donations are going to a great program and I would do it many times over with that in mind.” Once plungers dried off and got warm, pizza and hot coffee and hot chocolate were offered. Awards were given out to plungers who raised the most money and for those with the best costume. “The event went great,” said plunge organizer Andrea Rachko. “We couldn’t do this event without our local community support, the support of CMU and our local law enforcement departments and the fire department.”

ALUMNI GIVE BACK
Capital Campaign raising more than $100 million is a major accomplishment, turning point for alumni outreach A goal of raising $100 million was thought to take seven to eight years. Central Michigan University did it in less than four. It was announced Feb. 14 at the Board of Trustees meeting, that the “Fire Up for Excellence” capital campaign has raised $101,654,498. This is beyond the university’s initial goal of $100 million. This campaign, which was created in 2015, was an ambitious goal. “Everyone thought we were nuts,” said campaign chair Michael O’Donnell after delivering campaign updates to trustees. The campaign, which continues until Fall 2019, will conclude with another, bigger campaign being revealed. O’Donnell told trustees this campaign will aim for between $300-$500 million. This accomplishment is huge; for our university and our students. This next goal of raising up to $500 million for our university is exciting and commendable. We want to say thank you to everyone who has fundraised for our university and donated to our university. Your contributions is what will help university continue to improve and help its students succeed in the best way possible. While some of the money will go toward athletics, 82 percent of donations are designated to fund academics through scholarships and student research. That means more students will be able to attend and succeed at CMU on scholarships. More students will have the opportunity to participate in research that will advance their collegiate careers. During the campaign, the university also raised more than $20 million each year, and received more than 23 gifts of $1 million or more. This shows the importance of reaching out to our alumni and showing them the value of investing in your university even after they have graduated. Their contributions are the catalyst for the future of our university. Their money will help students to come, and succeed here at CMU. This is a crucial achievement in CMU’s history. It should be a motivation for all students, faculty, staff, current alumni and future alumni, to be believe in our university and what it can do. We should all be excited to see the outcome of this next capital campaign and how much money we raise then.

Don’t let bad roommates ruin your college experience I spent my first month of college constantly being miserable. Today, I am happier than I was in high school. I know it seems like a drastic claim, but the largest factor in it all was my roommates. Last April, all of my friends were stressing over finding their college roommates. I sat content believing I had found the perfect match. Yet, I was the one crying myself to sleep the during second week of school. I had spent months during my last semester in high school trying to find who I thought would be my college roommate/ best friend. I downloaded the Schools App and meticulously went through each and every profile hoping to find my perfect fit. I thought I had found the perfect group of four - all of us ready to take on Central Michigan University and crush our freshman year. Then, both of my expected suitemates dropped. I still had my roommate, who I had been texting for months and even met up with. I knew I could move in and no matter who my suitemate was, I could rely on my roommate. Sadly, I was mistaken. Not even two weeks into the semester, the two girls had teamed up against me and made our suite a living hell for me. I cried more in those next two weeks than ever before. There I was two hours

away from home, all alone, waiting for the mandatory two weeks of the semester to pass so I could begin my search for new roommates. The CMU Residence Life Policy states, “Approved space changes may take place beginning the third week of the semester (after two full weeks of classes).” As soon as the second week of classes came to a close, I took it upon myself to make a meeting with my residence hall director and began making appointments to tour different dorm rooms. After touring more than 20 different dorm rooms, I had made my final decision and all that was left was for me to pack and move. A week later, I was officially out of my dorm room and completely settled into my new one. After less than a day in the new room I had chosen, my mood was already lifted. I automatically clicked with my new roommates. They became my family here

at CMU. Instead of dreading going back to my dorm, I couldn’t wait to go back to my dorm. My awful roommate experience was going to forever be the reason I dropped out of CMU. I thought that was just a taste of what the next four years of my life would be here. I promised myself I would make it through a semester and if I still hated it, I would transfer. So many people have had bad roommate experiences, no matter how we handle them, these situations really do end up impacting us in major ways. The stress of taking care of myself, all the homework, extra activities and adjusting to college life were already too much to handle, let alone the negative experience from my roommates. Now, I have the support of my roommates during a bad day and people who will care about what I accomplish and what happens to me. Not only am I happier in my room, my grades are better and every part of me just feels lighter because I am now able to be myself. In the end, I am glad I didn’t transfer. I now have some great roommates and although I won’t be living with them next year, I know that no matter what next year brings, I will have them.
