OWNER GIVES FIRST-HAND ACCOUNT OF SHOTS FIRED NEAR WAYSIDE PARKING LOT After gunshots were fired from a vehicle straight into the air outside of Wayside Central early Jan. 27 Mount Pleasant police officers responded “immediately,” according to the bar’s owner. John Hunter said that at about 2:15 a.m. Jan. 27, a vehicle was traveling 10-15 mph onto East Broomfield Street when a couple of gunshots were fired straight into the air from the car. The vehicle then sped away. There were no injuries, Hunter said. He also said he takes issue with calling the incident a “shooting” as some media have reported. He was inside the Wayside during the incident, Hunter said. Wayside staff immediately called the Mount Pleasant Police Department. Hunter added that police pulled the car over shortly after near the Burger King restaurant. Wayside Central closed at 2 a.m. Hunter said there were only a few customers and about 15-20 members of its bouncer staff in the parking lot when the incident occurred. Video surveillance was turned over to the MPPD. Hunter called it an “isolated incident.”

“My staff did a great job in handling the situation,” he said. A 20-year-old and a 22-year-old were arrested after the incident, according to The Morning Sun. Central Michigan Life contacted MPPD Chief Paul Lauria and Public Information Officer Jeff Browne seeking comment for this story. Some Central Michigan University students wondered on social media why a Central Alert notification was not sent after the incident was reported. According to the Central Michigan University Police Department website, “Upon confirmation of a dangerous situation involving an immediate threat to the health or safety of the university community, students, faculty and staff will typically receive a notification through the Central Alert system.” According to its Twitter page, the Central Michigan University Police Department stated that the suspects were apprehended very quickly and there were no injuries or damage. -Evan Sasiela, University Editor

New Writing Center location now open in Charles V. Park Library By Jeremy Agosta Staff Reporter news@cm-life.com

Students can visit a new Writing Center in the Charles V. Park Library to improve their writing skills. In room 360 at the Park Library, Central Michigan University’s latest Writing Center location opened this semester. It replaces its former location on the library’s fourth floor. Part of the College of Humanities and Social and Behavioral Sciences, the Writing Center has myriad locations students can visit to improve their writing skills and receive assistance. There are also locations in Anspach Hall room 154 and in the basement of Wheeler Hall. As part of CMU’s summer 2017 construction projects, the Park Library’s Writing Center was relocated to the third floor along with the Mathematics Assistance Center. “It was an opportunity to redesign the space and make it specific for our own uses,” said Daniel Lawson, writing center director. “We had adapted to the space we had, and within cubicle walls we were able to shape it to what we needed it to be.” Staff member Kenneth Otani, a Mount Pleasant graduate student, said the more prevalent space in Park Library offers newer opportunities for students. Otani has worked for the Writing Center for five years at its Anspach Hall and Park Library locations. He said the new center provides the same services and includes the same technology and computers. “We just moved here last semester to the library location, so it’s a lot more open,” Otani said. “I like how we have the glass windows so we can see outside into the actual library.”

CMU allowed oversight and assistance between various parts of CHSBS and the Writing Center to shape the space to the college’s specifications. “We were able to collaborate with the architects, with the space committee, with librarians and really shape that space to our needs,” Lawson said. “We’re not sitting on top of each other. Even in terms of directing folks from the door to the areas it’s much more deliberate.” Lawson added the renovations were made to help consolidate student services and offices around campus. For the Park Library Writing Center, these moves provided new opportunities to attract students in a more visible and welcoming area. Flint graduate student James Cowley said he favors the Park Library location because it operates on weekends. “This one is a lot more presentable,” Cowley said. “This one is a lot more spacious.” The Park Library Writing Center has longer hours than other locations and is open seven days a week. The Writing Center locations in Anspach Hall and the Towers only operate four-to-five days of the week. The hours for the Park Library Writing Center are: • Sunday: 5-9 p.m. • Monday-Thursday: 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. • Friday: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. • Saturday: 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. During the evening, walk-in appointments are welcome at the Park Library location, according to the CMU website. Students can call the Writing Center locations to schedule appointments ahead of time. Appointments are 50 minutes and consultants will assist students with any part of the writing process.

CENTRAL REVIEW SEEKING APPLICANTS FOR FIRST LIVE STORYTELLING EVENT Central Review, a literary journal at Central Michigan University, is seeking applicants for its first ever live storytelling event. The theme for the this year is “crisis.” Although the date is to be determined, Marysville senior Delany Lemke, editor-in-chief of the Central Review, said the live event will take place sometime in mid-to-late February. The location of the event is still being decided. Lemke said she would frequently listen to podcasts of people telling

interesting stories about their life, which inspired her to create the event. The event would be similar to The Moth, an organization focused on live storytelling. Lemke said Central Review will accept oneto-two minute shortened pitches of someone telling a true story about their life that involved crisis: identity crisis, a fight with someone — as long as it is nonfiction and about their own life. Submissions can be in video or audio format. To send a submission, email

it to cmucentralreview@ gmail.com. Submissions are open to both students and faculty. Central Review is hoping to have six to seven people perform at the event with it lasting around two hours. Lemke said to watch Central Review’s Facebook page to stay updated. Central Review publishes student poetry, art and non-fiction. The journal publishes once a semester. -Emma Dale, Community Editor

ALL CHARGES DROPPED IN LEVITT LAWSUIT An Isabella County judge ordered all charges filed in a defamation and ensuing damages lawsuit filed by Mount Pleasant attorney Todd Levitt to be dropped Jan. 9. Isabella County Judge Paul Chamberlain of Isabella County Probate Court, cited free speech issues as he nixed the case filed against attorney Gordon Bloem, as well as former Central Michigan University instructor Kenneth Sanney. Faculty member James Felton and his wife Angela, were also named in the lawsuit. Formerly an instructor at CMU, Levitt originally sued student Zachary Felton in June 2014 after he had created a parody Twitter account. Levitt said the account caused him damage in lost revenue, as well as damaged his reputation which caused him to lose his teaching position at the university. Chamberlain dismissed the suit against Felton, ruling the Twitter account was protected under the First Amendment. Shortly after, Levitt filed a $1 million lawsuit against The Morning Sun newspaper, Bloem, Sanney, the Feltons The Morning Sun was dismissed from the lawsuit in May 2017.

Levitt named Sanney and James Felton for damages and emotional distress caused after an altercation with Levitt in front of his law office north of CMU’s campus. Sanney and James Felton secretly recorded the encounter. The recording was of a verbal confrontation that took place after Sanney and Felton called Levitt a “clown” outside of his office. It was later uploaded to SoundCloud and distributed to more than a dozen outlets, including the Finance and Law department chair of the College of Business Administration, where Levitt was teaching at the time. Levitt said that despite Chamberlain’s decision, he and attorney John Devine will pursue the case through other venues. “We are still considering filing (the judge’s decision) in the (Michigan) Court of Appeals at this time,” Levitt said. Levitt also said he plans to use his radio show The Todd L. Levitt Radio Show and podcast to offer “his side of the story.” -Mitchell Kukulka, Asst. Community Editor

‘Fool for Love’ to open University Theatre Spring season By Zoe Newmann Staff Reporter news@cm-life.com

Four Central Michigan University students will soon bring Sam Shepard’s “Fool for Love” to life, with the first showing at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 1 in the Bush Theater. Tickets are $7 for CMU students and $9 for the public. Tickets are currently on sale on Ticket Central’s website. “Fool for Love” will be performed at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 1-3 and Feb. 8-10. There will also be two 2 p.m. showings on Feb. 4 and 11. The play is directed by Steve Berglund, director of University Theatre, and will be the first show of the spring season. Berglund was chosen as director because of the “directors rotation” system in the theater program. Theater directors at CMU propose shows they would like to direct and then use the suggestions to fill out a schedule for the whole season. Berglund said “Fool for Love” is about how people in relationships define themselves and their partnerships.

“Anyone who has been in love can identify with a character from the play,” Berglund said. “Fool for Love” was written by Shepard in 1983. Shepard, who died in July 2017, was a Pulitzer Prize-winner, Academy Award-nominated actor and author of more than 44 books. The cast includes: Martin, played by Menominee senior Noah Steffen; the old man, played by Kalama-

zoo sophomore Christian Heintzelman; May, played by Macomb Township junior Lainey Williams; and Eddie, played by Grayling freshman Seth Patterson. Main characters May and Eddie are constantly in and out of each other’s lives throughout the play. Conflict begins when May decides to live in a motel outside of the Mojave Desert in order to run away from Eddie, who later finds her.

“The characters are two people who can’t live with or without each other,” Berglund said. Steffen said he was surprised to discover he was chosen for the role of Martin. Going into the auditions, he thought he might be chosen for the role of the Old Man. In the beginning, Steffen found it hard to find a rhythm in the show, considering his character is not in all the scenes. “In the play, Martin walks into a hornet’s nest,” Steffen said. “I had to learn to understand what he is going through.” Williams said it took a lot of emotional and physical labor to play May due to the emotional journey the character takes throughout the story, which led to some demanding scenes. “The relationship between May and Eddie is complicated in the fact that she loves him, but she also hates him,” Williams said. “She’s constantly going back-and-forth between whether she wants him to stay or leave. “It puts a lot on her mentally, as well as physically — she’s constantly worn out and sick.” Mount Pleasant junior Jeff Patton will provide music for the show on guitar.

YOU ARE NOT ALONE Impact statements in Nassar trial key in giving voice to victims in the aftermath of sexual assault In 2015, no one believed her. In 2018, she is being called the voice that brought down a monster. It started with Rachael Denhollander. She was 15 when she was sexually assaulted by the now-disgraced sports medicine doctor, Larry Nassar, under the guise of medical treatment. It wasn’t until Denhollander was an adult that she realized the severity of what Nassar had done to her. “The conclusion was, ‘Well, this must be medical treatment, because he’d never be allowed near us (gymnasts) if it wasn’t’,” Denhollander said in a Jan. 20 interview with NPR. “And as a 15-yearold, that was my thought process.” Denhollander’s search for justice ended last week after 156 women confronted Nassar offering their victim impact statements. Nassar was

EDITORIAL sentenced to 175 years in prison for decades of sexual abuse. We stand in awe of the strength and courage showed by these women. The national attention the Nassar case received showed those following it what victims often face – intense scrutiny, doubt, scorn and encouragement to be silent. We know now that this kind of silence aids predators like Nassar. That silence allows abusers to keep their power and continue hurting others. Nassar is going to jail for the rest of his life. Being able to join together with other survivors and confront

him was a healing moment for these women. For others victimized by sexual assault, however, there might not be a conclusion to their stories. Their attackers might never see a day in court. Some will never rest because they know the person who molested them is still out there, capable of hurting others. Yes, the accused is innocent until proven guilty. But if we want to be a society committed to justice for those violated by abusers, we must always take victims’ stories seriously. We do this with every other crime, but sometimes with sexual assault cases investigators are too quick to claim it’s a “he said/she said” situation that can never be proven. If you are the victim of sexual assault, you are not alone. We encourage

you to seek help and tell your story. In Mount Pleasant, there are numerous ways to report this type of crime. If you are on-campus, call the Central Michigan University Police Department at (989) 774-3081. If you are in town, the Mount Pleasant Police Department can be reached at (989) 779-5100. If you’re battling with the aftermath of a sexual assault, there are also many counseling options available to you as well: Sexual Assault Peer Advocates ((989) 774-2255), Listening Ear ((989) 772-2918) or the Counseling Center ((989) 774-3381). As we move forward, we cannot forget the heinous actions of Nassar and the people who tried to protect him and cover up his crimes. It’s time to do better. For everyone.

Student guitarist talks about his passion for playing music By Hunter Dood Staff Reporter news@cm-life.com

He’s played Saint Andrews Hall in Detroit. He’s opened for Poison lead singer Bret Michaels. Now, Detroit senior Zach Surma is looking for students to help him take it to the next level. Surma, former lead guitarist of the band Poor Millionaires said he was exposed to music at a young age — falling in love with Elvis Presley at just 5 years old. After wanting to start a band or just have others to play music with, he recently posted flyers in Moore Hall and the music building in search for people to jam with. Central Michigan Life caught up with Surma to talk about his appreciation for music. CM LIFE: How old were you learned how to play the guitar? Surma: I was 10 years old

when I first started guitar lessons. I knew I was going to enjoy playing. I really enjoyed it from the start. It didn’t take me long to finally realize I could do this. I kept at it and now I’m here, 11 years later, still playing the guitar. What made you want to play guitar? Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin was my initial inspiration to

pick up the guitar. The charisma behind playing the guitar is important, and Page shows it like no other. I was a young kid that was enamored by the spotlight. The guitarists get all that because of solos and whatnot — sometimes too much. How old were you when you joined your first band? I was 16 when my friends and

I first got together. We started doing open mics and playing some small venues. When we all turned 18, we started to play bars and clubs. We were big at dive bars — we drew a lot of interest. Most of the bars wanted us coming back because we brought people in. What was your most memorable show? I have two that really stand out. After we started creating buzz at dive bars we played a gig at Freedom Hill (Amplitheatre). We were one of the opening bands at the Stars and Stripes Festival. We opened up for (Poison lead singer) Bret Michaels. The other would be when we played Saint Andrew’s Hall. It was our biggest show. We played in front of 500 people and the vibe in the room was great. We were feeling it and the crowd was energized. It was just a good moment for us as a band. What happened to Poor Millionaires? After we played our biggest

show we got full of ourselves — we were young and dumb. We had half of us wanting to go to Central Michigan University and others not so much. Our lead singer went out to Arizona to pursue his dreams in the desert and our bass player got too big-headed for us, so he split, too. After we broke up, I just came up to CMU and decided to put music on hold for a bit while I pursue my degree. I tried to get some people together and start (a band) up here but that never came to fruition. What made you get back into the music scene? It wasn’t until last month that my passion came back out while attending a Greta Van Fleet show at Saint Andrews Hall. Greta Van Fleet is supposed to be the next big thing in rock and roll, and they are around the same age as me. I was like ‘they’re playing Saint Andrew’s Hall and I played Saint Andrew’s Hall’. It was cool just to see a group as popular as

them playing the same venue I did. It made me realize we can still do it. I just don’t want to think ‘what if ’ later in life. I decided to put a flyer up because I figured it was the most direct way reach people. I was able to put it up in the music and BCA buildings, so I knew I was reaching the creative students. I didn’t want to put it on Craigslist because people could be too far away or not the right age group. Putting the flyer up on campus meant that they’d be in my general area and around the same age. Why rock and roll? I have always just felt a connection to rock. Rock and roll gives me an emotional connection. The meaning behind songs are just better. Songwriters pour out their feeling into the lyrics and they bring feelings out of you. Interested in collaborating with Zach? Call him at 586-441-1186 or email him at zach.surma@gmail.com

St. Clair Shores sophomore Ashley Bourlier attended Siblings Weekend with her 16-year-old brother John and 18-year-old brother Ryan. This was the Bourliers’ first time participating. She said although there was a lot to pick from, the variety of events made it easier to appeal to the interests of everyone in the family. It wasn’t just a first time event for the Bourliers, either. Midland senior JD Copus, entertainment coordinator for Siblings Weekend, said this was his first time organizing an event of this size. Seeing all they younger kids enjoying themselves was the best part for him. “That’s why we do this, so that they can have fun,” Copus said. At the annual pancake breakfast Saturday siblings also enjoyed breakfast as Chris Cakes of Michigan tossed pancakes onto their plates. Nathan Smith, employee at the catering company, said Chris Cakes has been working the event for more than 10 years. “I love that feeling of the older sibling

showing the younger sibling this is what growing up looks like,” Smith said. Malia Reger, another employee, said they easily serve 2,000 pancakes during the breakfast. Her favorite part was having all the kids involved, which makes Siblings Weekend feel like a “community event.” Some students were even former participants themselves. After coming to Siblings Weekend when she was younger, Williamston freshman Grace Lounsbury decided to bring her 15-year-old brother to stay with her for the weekend to continue the tradition. They agreed their favorite part had been spending time on-campus and getting to have fun together. Wrapping up the weekend was a carnival comprising inflatables, music, games and performances by the Central Harmony a cappella group and the Explosive dance team. Among the games were basketball, bean bag toss and an obstacle course. Sanford freshman John Apo was a volunteer for Siblings Weekend. He said he participated to “help others have fun.” “I want to make this the best experience for everyone here since I don’t have my own siblings,” Apo said. “What better way to do that than to volunteer and help make sure that other people’s siblings are having fun?” Staff Reporter Melissa Frick contributed to this article.

University asks Chippewa Hockey Network, club teams to rebrand By Dylan Goetz Sports Editor sports@cm-life.com

Chippewa Hockey Network, Division III men's hockey, DII men's hockey and women's hockey were ordered by CMU on Jan. 25 to complete a full rebrand. The university is claiming that the network gives a false representation of CMU club hockey teams. The teams and broadcast network combined to create a confusing impression of varsity hockey at the university, co-founder Shawn Bednard said. Chippewa Hockey Network must also rebrand all social media and websites, Bednard said. The network was contacted via

The most important change that the university wanted was to make sure the broadcasters and teams were always using the word "club" in front of hockey to ensure that they do not give the impression of a varsity sport, Bednard said. "We have to change our name to Chippewa Club Hockey Network," Bednard said. The DIII hockey team confirmed the rebrand after winning its 17th straight game. "In the future, we have to add 'club', or 'DIII' next to the word 'hockey' in order to say we're a club sport and not a DI or NCAA sport," head coach James Cadzow said. changes to our website to just use the (CMU) logo and and not have it say 'hockey.'" CMU's jerseys are still able to be used in games. This means the jerseys do not portray a varsity sport at the university. Cadzow said the team is getting new jerseys anyway, but since they didn't use CMU's "Action C," they do not have to change jersey designs. Women's hockey head coach Brittany Knopp confirmed the rebrand on Saturday. She was contacted by the university, and thinks it is a great idea. "We represent (CMU) at the highest level," Knopp said. Freshman Saxton replaces former All-American until MAC Tournament By Jake Clark Staff Reporter sports@cm-life.com

Central Michigan wrestling suffered another injury to a top wrestler on Jan. 19, just before the team finishes Mid-American Conference play in February. Two days before Colin Heffernan’s long-awaited return, Justin Oliver suffered a sprained MCL, providing another setback for head coach Tom Borrelli. The Chippewas lost three dual meets in December. They followed up with four-meet win streak. They now sit at 6-4 on the season, and 3-1 in conference play. Oliver was injured during the Jan. 19 loss to Missouri. He said the injury happened during a routine third period scramble. “We were rolling around and (the opponent) had my foot anchored,” Oliver said. “I was trying to come behind him and (my knee) just twisted on me.” Borrelli doesn't have a timeline for Oliver's return, but he’s aiming to return to full contact in practice well before the MAC Tournament in early March. “Right now, it’s a lot of rehab to work the muscles in my quads,” Oliver said. "I'm trying to get rid of the pain and let it heal while conditioning to make sure I stay in shape.” Losing Oliver right before

Heffernan was set to return from injury after more than a month, Borrelli is hopeful for an early return. “You’re possibly taking a nine, maybe six-point swing,” Borrelli said of losing two veterans for a chunk of the season. “In a close dual meet, that’s huge.” Oliver has dealt with injuries in past seasons. He said each time he recovers, he figures out how to recover faster. “Obviously, you never want to be injured,” he said. “Having dealt with it before, it helps your mentality.” In the Jan. 21 win against Buffalo, true freshman Nolan Saxton wrestled in the 149-pound weight class. He lost a 6-3 decision. Though it was his first match at the varsity level, Saxton felt he could have wrestled better. “The nerves got to me a little bit,” he said. “I’ll be fine, I just need to worry about getting better in (practice). If I wrestle as hard as I can and keep improving in here, everything will work out there (in competition).” Saxton grew up about 20 minutes away from CMU’s campus in Remus. He qualified for the state tournament every year of high school, and won the 135-pound Division III title in 2017. “I knew the area and the program,” he said. “I liked how hard everyone worked, I liked

the environment – I liked basically everything about (Central Michigan).” Despite the loss, Saxton received praise from Oliver and Borrelli. “(Saxton's) a tough kid. He works hard and he’s got the right attitude,” Oliver said. “This is going to be good for him — a good learning experience he’ll take a lot from." Borrelli said he expects a lot of improvement from Saxton while he fills in for Oliver. “(I expect him) to continue to improve,” Borrelli said. “He had his first match in varsity competition Jan. 21, and it’s not easy for a freshman to be put in that situation." Saxton expects to be starting in the four remaining dual meets, which start Feb. 4 at Old Dominion in Norfolk, Virginia.

Men's basketball's Nwoko provides offensive boost using speed from playing soccer in Nigeria Nwoko plans to expand his sporting abilities this summer with sophomore guard David DiLeo, who has always been interested in tennis. “I haven’t played before, but yeah, (I’ll beat him),” Nwoko said. “I’m excited to play with him sometime this summer.” In the eyes of DiLeo, playing multiple sports in high school is something all athletes should attempt to do in their career.

By Evan Petzold Staff Reporter sports@cm-life.com

Growing up in Lagos, Nigeria, Innocent Nwoko had no interest in playing basketball. He longed to play professional soccer. “I played soccer a lot in Nigeria,” Nwoko said. “I came to Michigan and had the opportunity to play in high school too. Growing up in Nigeria, it’s just what every kid does.” When Nwoko arrived at New Haven High School in Michigan, head coach Tedaro France handed him a basketball. He could not shoot or dribble and didn't understand the rules. The 6-foot-11 center had no plans of finding a passion for basketball. Instead, he wanted to develop his soccer career while receiving a good education. Playing professional soccer was Nwoko's dream for as long as he could remember, but as he grew, he quickly realized it would not be an option. “When I was playing (soccer) in high school, I was too tall playing with kids that were small,” Nwoko said. “Sometimes I couldn’t keep the ball on my feet because they could steal it easier than when I used to be smaller.” During his two years as a basketball player in for New Haven, Nwoko stuck to his soccer roots and used his footwork to lead his team. The 232-pound redshirt freshman center led New Haven basketball to a 25-1 record in the 2015-16 season, which included a Macomb Area Conference Gold, district, and regional championship. He also played AAU basketball for the Spiece Indy Heat. CMU head coach Keno Davis runs an offense that pushes the ball in the fastbreak, which fits perfectly for a big man like Nwoko due to his

speed on the soccer field. “We’ve always liked the versatility of players to be able to stretch the floor,” Davis said. “Even though Innocent’s not a stretch player, he has the speed we want to play with. We had something special in him with his ability to be able to run up and down the floor. “Sometimes it takes bigger guys a little longer to develop, but he’s coming along and will be an impact player here sooner than later. " In Nigeria, basketball is not a popular sport. In the NBA, there are only two players of Nigerian nationality but were not born in Nigeria – Al-Farouq Aminu and Giannis Antetokounmpo. "Recently, (Nigerian) people have started to try playing basketball more," Nwoko said. Even though he spends most of his time on the hardwood, the center still follows professional soccer. Nwoko's favorite player is Barcelona’s Lionel Messi and he watches Arsenal of the English Premier League. His favorite basketball player is Kevin Durant of the Golden State Warriors. With basketball and soccer under his belt,

“Tennis helps with footwork and I think there are other sports that complement each other,” DiLeo said. “With tennis, you are working individually and with basketball, you are working with a group of five. Playing multiple sports can help with both aspects.” Nwoko averages over three minutes per game. He has 13 points, 13 rebounds, two blocks and three steals this season.

CHIPPEWA GYMNASTS DEFEAT NORTHERN ILLINOIS TO STAY UNDEFEATED IN CONFERENCE

Maricruz Patino | Staff Photographer Sophomore guard Kevin McKay passes an opponent during the men’s basketball game against Kent State on Jan. 27 at McGuirk Arena.

Head coach Davis calls non-starter McKay one of team’s ‘best players’ By Evan Petzold Staff Reporter sports@cm-life.com

At halftime, Kevin McKay had zero points. By the end of the game, he had a team-high 17 points. Following Central Michigan’s 70-61 loss to Miami (Ohio) on Jan. 23 at McGuirk Arena, head coach Keno Davis called sophomore guard McKay his star player. However, McKay has yet to start a game in his Chippewa career. “He’s our best defender and best rebounder,” Davis said. “When you’re the best player, you’re going to get opportunities.” In the loss to Miami, McKay posted 17 points, eight rebounds, one block and one steal. All of his points came in the second half to give CMU a late opportunity to beat the RedHawks. “Kevin has the green light to attack the basket (and) to knock down the open 3-pointer,” Davis said.

McKay has scored more than 10 points in five of the last six games for the Chippewas. In that span, he logged 13.5 points and 6.2 rebounds per contest. He has scored in double figures nine times this season. The switch from scoring zero points in the first half to 17 points in the second half against Miami came from being aggressive, McKay said. “In the second half, I was (being aggressive) and my teammates were finding me,” he said. In spite of heating up in the second half, the sophomore does not plan to take more shots than usual early in games going forward. “If the ball comes to me, I’m fine with that,” McKay said. “If not, I’m fine with that too.” The 6-foot-5, 222-pound shooting guard plays a backup role to senior guard Josh Kozinski, who has scored in double figures just four times this year. Over the same six games as McKay, Kozinski averaged six

points, 2.5 rebounds and 0.5 assists. “As much as I’ve seen him improve as a player, there’s a lot more you’ll see from McKay in his career here at CMU,” Davis said. During the 2017 season, Kozinski, at 6-foot-4, 188 pounds, has posted 5.8 points, 2.7 rebounds and 0.5 assists per game. McKay, one of Kozinski’s backups, has averaged 10.1 points, 5.9 rebounds and 1.6 assists per contest for CMU this season. Davis said McKay needs to improve his endurance to expand his role with CMU. McKay averages 24.4 minutes per game for the Chippewas. Kozinski only averages 22.9 minutes, but the senior gets the start. “(McKay) brings so much energy on the court,” Davis said. “Now, it’s about him being able to play that number of minutes and not get too tired.” In the Chippewas’ most recent game, McKay did not start.

Sophomore gymnast Denelle Pedrick didn’t let a previous error ruin her day when she posted a 9.925 on the vault — the thirdbest vault score this season in a victory over Northern Illinois. Senior Katy Clements topped all gymnasts on the floor exercise and balance beam with 9.900 scores in each event to help lead CMU over NIU, 195.650 to 194.950. The No. 19 Chippewas (4-0, 3-0 MidAmerican Conference) continued their winning ways over MAC opponents this season and now hold a two-win lead over Ball State, Western Michigan, Northern Illinois and Eastern Michigan. CMU has three remaining MAC competitions before competing at the MAC Tournament in March at McGuirk Arena. NIU (1-6, 0-2 MAC) started off on the vault. Junior Gianna Plaska led CMU on the uneven bars with a 9.850 score in the first rotation. However, the Huskies won the uneven bars,

48.950 to 48.875, with help from NIU junior Katherine Prentice’s 9.900 score. Each Chippewa that participated on the vault scored at least a 9.700 in the event. CMU won the vault, 48.925 to 48.400. Senior Courtney Campbell replaced Macey Hilliker’s spot this week after Hilliker’s injury. Campbell posted 9.750 score. Junior Abbey Rose Zoeller posted her best score of the season on the floor with a 9.800 as CMU and NIU tied 49.025-49.025 on the floor. Clements led the Chippewas on the balance beam in the final rotation with another 9.900 score. Sophomore Hayley Porter posted her best score of the season with a 9.850 as CMU won the beam and would go on to win the meet. CMU hosts Southern Utah at 7 p.m. on Feb. 2 at McGuirk Arena. -Ian Wellhousen, Staff Reporter
