PROFESSORS AWARDED $4.8 MILLION GRANT FOR MOLECULAR MODELING RESEARCH Two Central Michigan University physics professors were included in a $4.8 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy to assist in research that will improve the process of molecular modeling. The grant will give the physics department an opportunity for a fouryear project. CMU physics professors Koblar Jackson and Juan Peralta will oversee the project and a staff of 10 scientists from four other universities, including the University of Florida, University of Texas at El Paso, Temple University and the University of Pittsburgh. “This is a great opportunity for us,” Jackson said. “It is the first big

project for both of us.” The research is computerbased and will focus on creating and using computer codes to solve calculations regarding the arrangement of atoms in all stages of matter. The goal of the research is to improve the process of molecular modeling, the science of using computer calculations to mimic how materials work at atomic and molecular levels. The process of molecular modeling currently used by the scientific community is sophisticated, but cannot predict molecular behavior under certain circumstances, like how molecular bonds react to being altered. There will be three major parts to the research:

theory, code development and testing. Jackson and Peralta’s team at CMU will be in charge of developing the computer codes for the research, while researchers at other partner universities focus on theory and experimental testing. The team will be working with a rotating crew due to the project’s four-year schedule. Graduate and undergraduate students are encouraged to apply to work on the project through the physics department. “We are trying to give this experience to the students and show them what it is really about,” Jackson said. — Claire Jones, Staff Reporter

CBA STUDY ABROAD PROGRAM TO TEACH NETWORKING THROUGH GOLF SUMMER 2018 A new study abroad program in Scotland aims to teach students about the importance of networking — by teaching them how to golf. Offered by Central Michigan University’s College of Business Administration, the course is titled “Selling on the Green,” or BIS 342. The faculty-led program begins May 23 and concludes June 6, 2018. The course will be taught by CMU marketing and brand strategy professor Deborah Gray. The purpose of the class, Gray said, is to teach students how to network and build business relationships through playing golf. Gray contributed a chapter to the 2014 book “Selling on the Green: The Art of Building Trusted Relationships

and Growing Your Business on the Golf Course” by Jonathan Taylor and Tim Davis. “Golf is the international language of business,” she said. ”(About) 90 percent of CEOs are golfers, and those who golf make an average of 17 percent more than those who do not.” Students will be spending time in the cities of Edinburgh and St. Andrews, and will have the opportunity to learn about the history of golf in Scotland. Students will also learn key socialization and conversational skills, aimed at helping them successfully network through playing golf. — Farhan Coleman, Staff Reporter

A program that started with 20 mentors in 2004 now has more than 140 student volunteers who have lunch with their "buddies" every Friday. Central Michigan University students who volunteer to be Lunch Buddies mentors spend lunch and recess with a student every Friday at elementary schools in the community. The Lunch Buddies program helps elementary students develop positive attitudes about school and learn about nutrition and physical activity. This Mary Ellen Brandell Volunteer Center program has helped more than 1,500 families and continues to impact the community, said Symantha Misale, mentoring programs graduate assistant. Students who are interested in becoming mentors can fill out an application on OrgSync beginning Dec. 8. The application will be open until the beginning of the spring semester. Lunch Buddies student coordinator and Westland senior Kandace Trombley became a Lunch Buddies mentor her sophomore year. Majoring in Early Childhood Development and Learning, Trombley said being part of the Lunch Buddies program has allowed her to be involved in something she’s truly passionate about because she loves working with children and having a positive influence in their lives.

She hopes Lunch Buddies will make a great impact on students. “Lunch Buddies as a program wants to reach out to students who have never heard of the program and who want to make an impact for the elementary students in the community, as well as develop a positive relationship between the student and the buddy,” Trombley said. Lunch Buddies hosted its facilitation training on Friday, Nov. 17 in the Bovee University Center Auditorium, where attendees focused on the importance of being a mentor. At the beginning of training, the mentors decorated brown paper bags with markers, writing positive messages to children about nutrition. The students reflected on why they chose to be mentors and what they are gaining from their volunteer experience. They came up with three core values they want to represent the Lunch Buddies program and the schools they visit every week: growth, empathy and optimism. Lansing freshman Alejandro Salais got involved in Lunch Buddies through a recommendation email and knew it would be the right opportunity for him to contribute to the community. He thinks the three phrases represent the experience of volunteering through Lunch Buddies. "Being a mentor means to be a role model and a source of support," Salais said. "Lunch Buddies has taught me how to be a leader and how much of a difference we can make in a child’s life."

The CMU Counseling Center is located on the first floor of Foust Hall.

Need help? Get help Don’t wait until it’s too late to seek mental health counseling When Central Michigan Life called the Counseling Center on Friday, Nov. 17, there were 65 students on a waitlist to meet with a counselor. Earlier in the semester, that wait EDITORIAL was more than 100 people long. We write a similar editorial around this time: It is the same words, but with one central premise — the Counseling Center should be better staffed, the university should put more of an emphasis on mental health accessibility for students and there shouldn't have to be a waitlist where students in need of help are pushed aside for a date weeks away. Central Michigan University undervalues mental health and its corresponding facilities when it cannot keep up with the demand that

trends upward during the fall semester. There comes a point when the burnout becomes too much for students, the course work piles high and the exams, essays and projects keep coming. When this happens, there should be a place for students to turn. There should be a place available to them where they can meet with a professional who can help offer perspective on their problems. For many students, this might be their first time away from home or their first time far from their support group of friends and family. They should not be relegated to a waitlist, only seen several weeks later. Staff at the Counseling Center have routinely expressed they they are not equipped to handle the deluge of students they see during the fall months. They want to hire more faculty, but are not

in charge of how many specialists are staffed at their Foust Hall location. So we urge any student — when the waiting gets long and you're in need of a counselor — be proactive. There are other resources on campus students can utilize that don't require a waiting list. There are a number of support groups that meet weekly around campus that might alleviate anxiety or depression for students. These groups aim to unite people suffering from the same disorder or trauma and bring them together to help whatever they're dealing with. Those struggling with stress or anxiety can visit a group at 11 a.m. every Friday in Foust 103. For survivors of sexual assault, the Sexual Assault Survivors Support Group meets at 3 p.m. every Thursday in Foust 103. Transfer students looking for support group counseling also have sessions at 2 p.m. every Friday dur-

ing the semester in the same room. The International Student Support Group meets at 3 p.m. every Friday in Foust 103. The hour long support group runs the entirety of the fall semester and "aims to explore (students') thoughts and feelings about arriving and studying in a new country, as well as offering new perspectives and skills to cope with situations that involve interacting in a different way," according to the Counseling Center's website. There are also a number of other locations at CMU that serve to meet with students and counsel them on anxiety, depression, loss, stress and more. Reach out to these locations and ask for their next availability, if needed. Don't suffer on your own as the days dwindle down to finals week. There is no better time to put your mental health first than now.

Media fails in its portrayals of Middle Eastern and white shooters Both the Orlando Pulse Nightclub shooter and the Sutherland Springs shooter had something in common beside committing horrendous crimes. They both had a history of mental illness. However, the way the media portrayed Omar Mateen, the Orlando Pulse Nightclub shooter, and Devin Kelley, the Sutherland Springs Texas shooter – you would never know. This is the stigma we have created in the divisive American political climate in 2017: if you commit a heinous act of violence and are white, there will be a rush to explain away the reason for your actions. If you are anything else, then sweeping generalizations of your ethnicity, religion or culture will be made. When news of the Orlando shooting broke, headlines read “Omar Mateen: Angry, violent ‘bigot’ who pledged allegiance to ISIS,” and “Omar Mateen

Emily Argue Columnist

described himself as ‘Islamic soldier’ in 911 calls to police” from CNN, Washington Post and The Guardian. Mateen’s association to ISIS isn’t debatable, but there was more to Mateen’s motive than just hate. Media organizations played a role in marginalizing Mateen’s history of mental illness and abusive behavior in favor of playing up the idea of a radical Islamic terrorist in America. Mateen’s ex-wife, Sitora Yusufiy, said at first Omar was the typical familyoriented husband. A few months into their marriage, however, she said he would sometimes become enraged for no reason.

She said physical abuse became a regular occurrence and she feared for her safety. But how did the media coverage of Kelley differ from Mateen? The headlines initially reported after the Sutherland Spring shooting from NBC, CNN, and Washington Post read, “Texas Gunman Devin Kelley Escaped from Mental Health Facility in 2012,” “Texas church shooter Devin Patrick Kelley’s troubled past emerges,” and “Texas church gunman escaped mental health facility in 2012 after threatening military superiors” — showing a completely different image than Mateen. How can Kelley be characterized so differently than another who perpetrated a similarly horrible act of violence, when the warning signs were there the entire time: Kelley was placed in Peak Behavioral Health Services hospital in Santa Teresa after he attempted to carry out

death threats made on his military chain of command He escaped from the mental health institute and was detained without incident by police after he was found near a bus station He was court-martialed in 2012 for assault and served 12 months in military prison He was discharged from the Air Force in 2016 due to “bad conduct” During this time, his then-wife reported that Kelley beat her and her son. The charges of domestic violence ended his first marriage. What it didn’t end was his behavior. Kelley remarried prior to the shooting and sent his mother-in-law threatening text messages, according to New York Daily News. The media later corrected itself with reports on Mateen’s mental health, but at that point, the damage was done.

America saw a Muslim man who pledged allegiance to ISIS and killed 49 people. This is the only picture people had of him. It will remain as the picture people paint in their minds when they think of Mateen. With Kelley, that picture isn’t as cut and dry. Kelley was portrayed from the beginning as the “white man with mental health issues.” This is what America saw. It’s almost as if his acts were dismissed as a symptom of his issues. The difference between Mateen and Kelley’s portrayal in the media painted a clear picture and reinforced the stereotype that Muslims are intrinsically linked to terrorism: that if you are Muslim, you are a terrorist and if you are a white male, you have mental health problems. This failure of the media is a danger to the way America views the Muslim community and mental health.

Manson murders shook up America and my flower child daydreams I’ve romanticized the 1960s since the eighth grade when I fell madly in love with Jefferson Airplane’s "Surrealistic Pillow” and the feel of bell-bottom pants against my legs. My mom would get upset over how devoted I was to a time period that took place decades before I was born. I vividly remember her throwing a fit when I said I wanted a 1967 Volkswagen Bus for my 16th birthday. She never understood my obsession with the Baby Boomer generation — I understand why she felt that way. The “Summer of Love” has dark clouds hanging above. But the fog of my innocence never provided me the courtesy of dodging the dark

truths of the “Summer of Love.” I know beneath the sounds of guitar solos and the vibrancy of tie-dye prints exists a culture of racism, drug abuse and a wild-eyed man who ruined the 1960s fantasy. The 83-year-old cult leader Charles Manson died in a California hospital on Nov. 19. The mastermind behind what I have been taught as one of the most atrocious murder sprees in U.S. history died of natural causes, according to the

California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. I can only imagine the horror that emerged when society discovered it was Manson and his family of young drifters, consisting predominantly of young women, who murdered at least seven people in 1969. He died north of the same Los Angeles setting where he spearheaded the seven, brutal Tate-LaBianca murders in August of 1969 that shook the quiet California neighborhood and would rock the world decades later due to their gratuitous use of violence. In high school, I attempted to read “Helter Skelter,” a 1974 book by Vincent Bugliosi and Curt Gentry. The book chronicles the

true crime conducted under Manson’s command through the insight of Bugliosi, a prosecutor in Manson’s 1970 trial. I never finished the book. I was probably distracted by studying or going to swim practice, but I still remember feeling my stomach turn. Manson, a man who preached war against races and identified himself as a hybrid between Jesus Christ and the Devil, totally annihilated the hippie-age fantasy. His death may never bring justice to the lives he took and to the minds he corrupted, but it reminds me of a few things. He’s the embodiment of the idea that one person can wake us from our illusions of everything being sunshine, rainbows and peace signs, to the cold

hard realities of life and death. He lured youngsters in from their middle-class homes and presented a world dominated by sociopathic notions. Manson was a monster born from the subculture of peace, free love and idealism. He’s as much apart of that era as The Beatles, ultra high-wasted pants or the beehive hairstyle. No era is without its faults, and to romanticize a decade in time is to realize no point in our history is as rose-tinted as it seems. No decade matches the fantasy associated with it, and too often it takes radicals like Manson to remind people just how imperfect every golden age is and remind us to continue fighting for justice and peace to all.

Student meets distant relatives during spring break By Ashley Schafer Staff Reporter news@cm-life.com

Spring break for many looks like long beach days at exotic locations. Waterford senior Autumn Gairaud traveled to Costa Rica last spring break to enjoy the sights, but her trip had a deeper significance: it was the first time she met relatives that she only ever about in stories. Meeting her family members was overwhelming, but she quickly felt at home in the country where her grandmother once lived. Central Michigan Life spoke with Gairaud about her experiences during the trip and what it taught her about her family and her heritage.

Q&A

Why is it difficult for her? When more people move there like that, it makes it a lot harder in those areas for the people who have always lived there to afford to live there, because it just changes the dynamic completely. What kind of family do you have there? I have a great grandpa, cousins and aunts, but it’s hard because I’ve never met them before. It’s kind of interesting. We’re family, but we’ve never met before. What was that like? Kind of overwhelming. I mean I have some aunts and uncles that live here that I’ve met, so I’ve heard stories about people there, but I’ve never met them. But it’s cool to talk to them. They are very much believe if you’re family, you’re welcome, which is cool but also kind of overwhelming. They made you feel like family? Yeah, which was different for me, compared

Did you learn anything about the culture there? The biggest cultural thing I noticed was the people native to Costa Rica are very patient with the people who don’t speak a lot of Spanish or who are trying to learn. They are very patient and want to help you learn, which I think is really different from here. (In the U.S.), when people don’t know English, or it’s their second language, we get really frustrated and don’t really want to help. We just want to move on and there they would constantly ask "oh, do you want to try in Spanish?" and that was really cool. Do you know Spanish? I started (at Central Michigan University) as a Spanish major, so I know quite a bit of Spanish, but it’s a lot different having to speak it there. Once, we called a cab and (the driver) didn’t know any English. My parents only really know

Was that your first time visiting Costa Rica? Yeah, it was. So, you have family there — where is your grandma now? My grandma is here (in the United States). She goes back and visits a lot, but I know for her it’s hard, because in the past 10 years Costa Rica has become more of a tourist place, so it’s changed a lot. A lot of people, specifically from the U.S., live there now, so I know that’s an interesting thing for her because she still really loves it but it’s hard to see somewhere like that change so much.

style is completely different.

English, so I had to give him directions back to where we were staying, which was scary, but also really cool, because I got him back to our apartment. Were there any other experiences like that one that stuck out to you? We did a lot. We spent a lot of time at the beach, but we also went zip-lining through the rainforest, which was cool. But I think the biggest thing was this surreal feeling of this is where I’m from, even if I’ve never had a direct connection to it. It very much felt like home in a lot of ways, especially because I can talk to family and stuff, even for a short time, which was cool. Do you want to go back? I would love to go back and spend more time because I only got to go for a week and a couple days. But I would love to go back and get to actually spend time not in the super touristy areas and just see what it’s like to live there day to day. That would be awesome.

to my mom. They’re from my dad’s side of the family. My mom and dad separated a long time ago and my mom’s very white. So, it’s a little different from her. When you were there did you stay with your family? They live in the capital (San Jose), which is one of the busier places. But we didn’t really stay with them, we stayed near them, so I got to just meet them. It was interesting because it’s so different from (the U.S.). The city is so different from the more rural areas. Making the switch to 120 Administrators say base credit hour reduction could make earning degree faster, cheaper news@cm-life.com

For many undergraduate students, 124 is the goal — the number of credit hours needed to graduate from Central Michigan University with a bachelor’s degree. What that 124 comprises is hard to nail down. Outside the core competencies and the required 24 to 27 credit hours in university program courses — the IA, IIB, IVC and so on — students will typically have some discrepancies when comparing needed courses to complete their majors or minors. Students need a minimum number of 300 level or above courses. Students need to have earned at least 30 of their 124 credits from CMU. And now, students will only need to earn 120 credits — possibly as soon as Fall 2018 for some degree programs. "A full (course) load is considered to be 15 credits a semester, which is equivalent to 120 credits over four years,” said Ian Davison, senior vice provost of the Academic Reorganization Initiative and dean of the College of Science and Engineering. The goal of Source: Office of Institutional Research lowering the credit requirement is to expedite student graduation rates, lower the cost of attending CMU and streamline the number of courses students can reasonably take in a semester. For Davison, this means making it so students can graduate in four years by taking 15 credit hours a semester. It may also mean an end to trying to squeeze in an extra four credits via summer courses, online classes or overloading

on classes for a semester. “Reducing the credits students actually complete by graduation will shorten the time to graduation and decrease the cost of a CMU education,” Davison said. “Doing so is likely to require a variety of approaches with the change to 120 credits representing the first small step.”

A NEW STANDARD The switch from 124 to 120 credit hours was approved by the Board of Trustees during their June meeting, spurred by imperatives outlined in the 2022 Strategic Plan, “Advancing Academic Excellence.” The plan was approved in June by the Board of Trustees and focuses on three imperatives: Nurturing student success, fostering scholarly activity and strengthening partnerships both in and out of state between the university and outside sources. This includes alumni, other communities, corporations, government agencies and nonprofit organizations. Claudia Douglass, vice provost for academic effectiveness, plays a large role in leading the change which she said is largely focused on “nurturing student success.” The new number, 120, is the minimum number of credit hours a student can take to earn a degree as required by the Higher Learning Commission, she said. “We’re looking at this as a way to advance student success,” Douglass said. “One of the goals is to help students graduate in four years. Reducing the number of required credits helps us get to that end.” Of the 16 degree programs offered, 13 require 124 as the base amount of credits to graduate. The remainder require at least 130 credits. Certain programs, however, will not benefit from the reduction such as accredited programs that require more than 120 credit hours to maintain the

program’s status. For degree programs that can be cut, Douglass said the idea is to trim from electives and modify a curriculum to streamline the learning process. This could involve making three separate courses into one catch-all course and updating what students are learning to meet industry standards in their respective job fields. This also helps CMU fall in line with other universities also at a 120-credit hour standard for graduation. These institutions include Ball State University, Illinois State University and Ohio University. Other institutions like Western Michigan University and Bowling Green State University have 122-credit hour minimums, compared to Miami University-Oxford which has a 128-credit hour minimum. Barrie Wilkes, vice president of finance and

administrative services, said money did not play a part in the decision to change the credit hour standard. He does not have an estimate for revenue gained or lost by the base reduction in credit hours. For the fall 2017 semester, tuition costs $417 per credit hour, meaning a little more than $1,600 per student could be lost by the university depending on if students capitalize on the credit reduction. “The financial impact will depend on the actual number of credits that students take,” Wilkes said. “Many will still take more than the minimum number of 120.” Some programs have already undergone a review, including the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Applied Arts and the Bachelor of Individualized Studies. According to University Communications, those degrees have been discussed by a number of com-

Slaughter, who’s on the offensive line for CMU’s football team, said playing for the Chippewas was a large reason for coming to the university. While he’s grateful for the opportunity to play, football is also one of the biggest difficulties when trying to plan for classes — namely, with scheduling around practices. “I’ve had a lot of difficulty with some classes that might only have one (time slot) and it’s during practice, so I have to try and reschedule and take a different class, or find a different semester,” Slaughter said. “It does cause a lot of problems for me especially.” If he could say anything to university administration in regards to implementing the credit change in a timely manner, Slaughter said it would be a simple message — just do it. “It would be very beneficial to any kind of student, because not only would it save us money, but being able to get us out into the real world faster would also be very beneficial as well,” he said. “I feel like (the university has) done an excellent job of preparing me for life after graduation and the different opportunities (CMU) gives you to be in the classroom or putting you out there in the real world is really beneficial for any kind of student.” Contributions to this article were made by News Editor Mitchell Kukulka.

‘Devised theater’ piece to be performed at SVSU By Corey Micho Staff Reporter news@cm-life.com

A Central Michigan University play written by several members of University Theatre has been picked up by neighboring Saginaw Valley State University to be performed within its own program. "The Other Project" was created by Annette Thornton, associate professor of communication and dramatic arts, and a group of 10 theatre students. Representatives from SVSU's social work department reached out to the cast shortly after the debut at CMU to perform the play at SVSU. The exact date of the SVSU performance hasn't been decided, though Detroit freshman Yasmeen Duncan, one of the

creators of the show, said the cast members are going to perform within the next few months. The play was a product of “devised theater,” meaning it was written, choreographed

and readied for stage through the equal collaboration of each member of the cast and crew. The stories in the play revolve around the idea of the “other," or the idea that some groups in

society are marginalized for being different than the perceived standard. The concept of otherness is ambiguous and fluid, which led the creators to write pieces about suicide, racism, sexism and bullying. “The concept (of otherness) has been around for a long time,” said St. Clair Shores freshman Brianna Milton. “It just hasn’t been brought up at the collegiate level.” As one of the 10 involved in the production, Milton said she is excited to perform at SVSU, as it helps spread the message of “The Other Project.” The intended message, Duncan said, was not to solve the “other” problem, but to promote awareness of the concept. “I found 'other' and 'otherness' are terms used in the so-

cial sciences and humanities to examine the way people view others that are dissimilar, different or separated from the way they identify themselves,” said Shepard senior Hollie Dickman. Dickman worked as a dramaturge — someone who researches real-world information and uses it to work into a play — for the show. She started working for Thornton during the summer. The show was put together between Sept. 5 and Oct. 5, debuting Oct. 14 in the Theatreon-the-Side in Moore Hall. The show’s reception was unexpectedly positive, Thornton said. The cast all had experiences of audience members commending them after the show for the message that was conveyed. “The show was powerful to

people,” Thornton said. “A grandmother that came up to me said she wanted her granddaughter to see it because of the message.” Claire Dettloff, a Grand Rapids sophomore, wrote and performed two songs for the project. She said she believes the “other” doesn’t exist, due to no two people being exactly the same. “We, as people, are the same, but also different in different ways,” she said. Milton said the play could not be done with a different cast, because the work is their own and it is their personal stories. The cast said they all desire to perform at SVSU, but it would come down to their schedules. Thornton said she would like to perform the play in high schools, but there are not concrete plans to do so at this time.

A-Senate discusses bill that targets grad students By Samantha Shriber Staff Reporter news@cm-life.com

Academic Senators expressed resistance to a bill in the U.S. Congress which could affect graduate students and their research on campus during a meeting Nov. 21. H.R. 1, the House Republican tax reform bill, was passed by both the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate Finance Committee on Nov. 16. Critics of the bill say it could leave many middle-to-low-income graduate students unable to enter and complete their programs. H.R.1 repeals the tuition waiver tax exemption for graduate students teaching and assisting in research at universities. Melinda Kreth, chairperson of the English Language and Literature department, said graduate students would pay a tax on any benefits received through the university and a social security tax. Kreth described the bill as a “financial

whammy” hitting both the university and its higher level students. Provost Michael Gealt said multiple areas of the bill could negatively affect the CMU community. Senator Kirsten Nicholson, of the Biology department, proposed a resolution declaring the university’s formal opposition to the bill. She said resistance is crucial for not only the teaching and research needed on campus, but for nurturing future leaders throughout the nation. The resolution was passed unanimously by the Academic Senate. Gealt said if people in the audience felt strongly about the proposed tax bill, it would behoov them to contact their senator and congressional representative to make a formal complaing. In additionto the resolution, senator Mary Senter of the sociology, anthropology and social work department questioned President George Ross regarding CMU’s budget deficit during Spring 2017.

“I’ve written you three times asking for information on how last year’s budget deficit was resolved,” she said. In the spring, CMU projected a two-year $20 million budget deficit with imminent staff layoffs and cuts. Senter brought up how 24 CMU employees were predicted to be laid off and only 13 were let go. “There are about 2,755 people who work at Central Michigan University. What I reported to the board in September was that budgets are estimates,” Ross said. “They’re fluid and they change.” Gealt mentioned that CMU’s accreditation review is fast approaching. “Last week we got a letter from the Higher Learning Commission (HLC), asking us to select some possible dates for our fourth year Assurance Review,” Gealt said. The HLC is a nonprofit organization that grants regional accreditation requirements for universities and colleges in the central area of the U.S. The review determines whether a

university continues to meet the criteria for accreditation. Peer reviewers will analyze the university’s tendencies, advancements and structure. “Dates will be coming up in two years,” Gealt said, warning faculty that review-

ing tasks will take an immense amount of time. The senate also unanimously passed a resolution presented by the Student Government Association that will replace “Columbus Day” with “Indigenous People’s Day” on the official CMU calendar.

Football seals comeback over Northern Illinois By James Paxson Staff Reporter sports@cm-life.com

Quarterback Shane Morris threw a 29-yard touchdown pass to senior Corey Willis with less than two minutes remaining to lift Central Michigan football over Northern Illinois. Senior defensive back Josh Cox stole a goal-line interception to seal the 31-24 win with under a minute left on Friday in Kelly/ Shorts Stadium. NIU was driving down the field looking to tie the game in the final seconds. “(NIU) ran the same play in the first half, and I knew when they got back in the red zone they would run the same play to try and score,” Cox said. “They switched it in the open field from a corner to a post and I played the corner, and the ball happened to go to me.” The Chippewas scored 24-straight points to rally in the second half. The last time CMU football won eight or more games was in 2009 under former head coach Butch Jones. Morris, a graduate transfer student, threw an interception that would be returned for a touchdown on the first drive of the game. NIU redshirt sophomore Jawuan Johnson returned the 37-yard interception. NIU scored another touchdown off of a 4-yard pass from Marcus Childers as he connected to D.J. Brown in the back of the end zone. The drive took nine plays and started at the Chippewa 41yard line. The Huskies went 62 yards down the field and kicker

Christian Hagan added a 23yard field goal to extend the lead to 17 before halftime. The Chippewas started the second half with a defensive stop before Morris found Chapman for a 56-yard touchdown. Running back Jonathan Ward had a 52-yard run into the red zone on the next possession, setting the Chippewas up to score. The Chippewas were forced to settle for a field goal to make it a one-score game. The Chippewas rode their new-found momentum with a 15-play touchdown drive when Morris found Ward for a 6-yard pass — tying the game at 17 after three quarters. The Chippewas took the lead with Ward’s 54-yard run in the fourth quarter. CMU scored 24 unanswered points after not scoring in the first half. NIU tied the game with three minutes left when running back Tre Harbison scored on a 12-yard run. CMU went to the end zone on fourth down and four at the 29-yard line. Head coach John Bonamego had the option to kick a field goal against the wind or go for the first down. Bonamego went for the win. The gamble worked as Morris found Willis for a game-winning 29-yard touchdown pass. “The football tradition is important at Central Michigan and getting the chance to play with my brothers for the past five years has meant everything to me,” said senior defensive lineman Joe Ostman. CMU needed Western Michigan to beat Toledo to be tied for the MAC West title, but Toledo won 37-10.

Receiver Willis surpasses Antonio Brown in CMU record books By Evan Petzold Staff Reporter sports@cm-life.com

Senior receiver Corey Willis passed former Central Michigan football star Antonio Brown in the record books after catching a game-winning 29-yard touchdown pass on fourth down. In CMU’s 31-24 victory over Northern Illinois on Friday at Kelly/Shorts Stadium, Willis caught the record-breaking 29-yard touchdown pass on Senior Day — the last time Willis will play football at Kelly/Shorts Stadium. Along with registering the game-winning touchdown, Willis etched his name further up in the record books. The receiving score pushed him past former CMU receiver and Pittsburgh Steelers star Brown on the program’s all-time touchdown reception list. Willis now sits in third, while Brown is in fourth. Only Titus Davis (37) and Bryan Anderson (28) caught more touchdown passes in their CMU careers. In his collegiate career, Willis caught 157 passes for 2,346 yards and 23 touchdowns.

From 2007-09 with CMU, Brown managed to make 305 catches for 3,199 yards and 22 touchdowns. Brown is a five-time Pro Bowl athlete and twotime NFL receptions leader. He led the NFL in receiving yards in 2014. Willis is also tied for eighth place with 157 career receptions in a CMU jersey. Brown leads the CMU career reception record with 305 catches. CMU earned its eighth win of the 2017 season Friday. The last time that CMU reached eight or more wins was in 2009. Against NIU, Willis tallied three catches for 38 yards and one touchdown catch. During the 2017 regular season, Willis totaled 42 catches for 625 yards and nine touchdowns in just nine games. The senior averaged a team-high 69.4 receiving yards per game. Willis' senior season was stunted by a broken bone in his hand in the win against Kansas earlier this year on Sept. 9. Willis missed significant playing time but returned to ignite the Chippewa offense after three games. Last season, Willis was named to the All MidAmerican Conference Second Team.

Men's basketball claims Great Alaska Shootout title By Evan Petzold Staff Reporter sports@cm-life.com

In the 40th and final Great Alaska Shootout tournament, the Central Michigan men’s basketball team etched its name in the history books as champions. The Chippewas (5-1) fended off Cal State Bakersfield (4-3) Sunday 75-72 at the Alaska Airlines Center in Anchorage. “We gave extreme effort,” CMU head coach Keno Davis said. “We didn’t always make the right play, but we played extremely hard through three games, which is what you have to do to win a tournament.” CSU Bakersfield guard Damiyne Durham and guard Rickey Holden both made 3-pointers to give the Runners a 27-21 edge after tipoff. The momentum shifted in favor of the Chippewas after five-straight points from freshman guard Matt Beachler with just over four minutes remaining before halftime. Junior guard Gavin Peppers capped off the first half of action with a layup at the buzzer, giving the Chippewas a 39-36 lead. After CMU managed to jump out to a 10-point lead, CSU Bakersfield freshman guard Justin Davis scored a layup and Durham added a 3-pointer, cutting CSU Bakersfield's deficit to five points with 13:19 left in the game. “(CSU Bakersfield) was making everything,” Davis said. “Not only were they talented going inside, but they were also making tough shots.” Durham buried a 3-pointer with just under four minutes to play to give his team its

Durham dribbled past multiple CMU defenders to earn an open shot, but his game-tying 3-pointer was short. Roundtree led the way for the Chippewas with 15 points and six assists. CMU had four other players score double-digit points in senior forward Luke Meyer (14), sophomore guard David DiLeo

(13) and senior forward Cecil Williams (12). Following the game, Roundtree was named the Great Alaska Shootout Most Valuable Player, while Meyer and Williams were named to the All-Tournament Team. “(Roundtree) is a gamer,” Davis said. “He made the big play when we needed it. He settles the young guys when the ball is in his hands and we know the right play is going to be made more times than not.”

Central Michigan women's basketball picked up its second win over a Power Five team in the Championship game of the Junkanoo Jam tournament on Nov. 25. The Chippewas (4-1) defeated Iowa State (3-2), 81-60, to become tournament champions in Bimini, Bahamas. CMU topped San Diego State in overtime Friday, earning itself a spot in the torunament Championship game. Senior forward Tinara Moore scored 27

points and pulled down 19 rebounds in the overtime win after high-scoring guard Presley Hudson fouled out in the fourth quarter. Head coach Sue Guevara said CMU was operating efficiently offensively and defensively against the Cyclones. "I'm so happy and proud of our team," Guevara said. "We got running, we got going and we we're able to hit some shots, but what I was really happy with was (our defense)." After a hot-shooting start by both teams, Hudson paced the Chippewas to a 25-21 lead with three 3-pointers and 11 points in the first quarter. CMU made a late run

Breen picked up where she left off knocking down another 3-pointer for CMU in the fourth quarter. Hudson iced the game with 6:55 remaining by hitting a deep 3-pointer to give the Chippewas a 21-point lead. "I don't think there's any doubt (these were two big wins)," Guevara said. "We're talking about two very respectable basketball teams in Iowa State in the Big 12 and San Diego State in the Mountain West." Hudson scored 23 points while shooting 5-for-5 from threepoint-range on her way to winning Tournament MVP honors. Breen scored 22 points including 18 from three-point-range and Moore scored 15 points while adding 11 rebounds. CMU has only lost one game this season when Purdue topped the Chippewas 79-69 on Nov. 10 in McGuirk Arena. Now, the Chippewas are sporting a fourgame win streak. Central Michigan returns to action to host Aquinas at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 30 in McGuirk Arena.
