Taking exams is not often something many students look forward to in their last week of school. But some students find themselves in finals horror when they realize they have more than two exams in one day. Troy junior Sienna Violett said she is stressed out with the four exams she has within two days in addition to four term papers due in her classes. “I’ve been spreading them out and making sure I concentrate on each one on different days so I don’t do everything in one day and get overwhelmed,” Violett said. “But, I am still pretty overwhelmed.” To get through her exams, Violett said she is going to do her best to only think

about one exam at a time. “Thankfully I have an hour break in between two of them so I can use that hour to gear up for my next exam,” she said. According to the examination schedule, “students scheduled for more than two exams on the same day may arrange to have the exam in excess of two rescheduled for another time during the examination week.” Although this policy applies to senior Samantha Hegeman, she said she wants to take her three exams on Monday to get them over with. The South Rockwood native is enrolled in six classes in addition to an internship. “I’m going to try and start studying as soon as possible and just follow my study guides and take

it one day at a time,” Hegeman said. Without the study guides her professors provided, Hegeman said she would be a lot more stressed out. “I’ve been really lucky with all of the professors I have,” she said. In order to conquer her three exams on Monday, Grand Rapids sophomore Courtney Heeren said she is preparing for the hardest tests first and for the longest. “I’m not too worried,” she said. “It’s a lot but I’m not too nervous.” In addition to studying, Heeren said she plans to stay focused and sane with the help of some extra preparations. “I definitely will be working out and eating Chinese food,” she said. studentlife@cm-life.com

How do you prepare for finals? Study all year long or cram? By Justin Hicks Staff Reporter

Central Michigan University students have one last mountain to climb before they can check off the Spring 2012 semester – final exams. College students vary in study habits, which can easily be broken down into three categories. The first group is the dedicated students who consistently study year-round, minimizing the stress for finals. “I study well throughout the year and then try to get some sort of study guide together to study that info (before finals),“ said Port Huron freshman Rich Drummond. “I do get a bit more serious and buckle down more for finals though.” Secondly are the crammers, who string together hours of racking their brains on the eve of a big test. “I’m more laid back during the semester and I

don’t really schedule time strictly,” said freshman Emily Stetson. “I just find little times during the day and I go to the UC on Sundays and do a weeks amount of homework.” Like most crammers, Stetson’s study hours increase when she’s under a deadline preparing for an exam. “(For finals) I organize and schedule time to study for each of my classes,” she said. “I study multiple subjects per day and then the actual week of finals I spend a day on each subject right before the test.” Warren sophomore Jeff Gasior said he finds himself cramming because his exams creep up on him. “I tend to think I have more time to study than I really do and it finally hits me a day or two before the exam,” he said. “I would have to say I am a good crammer though, because I usually still end up knowing

the material for the exam.” Finally, the potentially most gifted students are those who bank on solely their memory from lecture to guide themselves through exams. “I’m the type of student who has to go to class everyday to hear the professor speak, but hearing it and writing it is all I need to remember 90 percent of the information,” said Rochester junior Michael Morrison. Regardless of which study habits you come closest to, CMU awards its inhabitants with two days this week, gift wrapped with zero classes and endless potential. “The study days given by CMU are a big help because they allow students to catch up on sleep and also to get an earlier start on studying,” Gasior said. “Knowing that you are done with classes after final exams is motivation to study more and do well.” studentlife@cm-life.com

Students say library offers best study rooms, atmosphere “We’re booked up every night for reservations.”

While some study for finals in dimly lit coffee shops, others prefer the quiet corners offered by the Charles V Park library. Carrie Claybough said she finds too many distractions studying at home. “I don’t seem to get anything done anywhere else,” Claybough, a Mount Pleasant junior said. Claybough has tried studying in other places like coffee shops, but has not been as successful as at the library, she said. Partaking in two study groups, Claybough enjoys the quiet study rooms available for checkout in the four floors of the library. Claybough has completed one final and has five left to take. Unlike Claybough, Ferndale senior Erin Taisey prefers to study at her apartment. Taisey prefers the convenience of studying where she sleeps, but sometimes ventures to the library.

Cara Booker, reference desk worker “It motivates me to get things done,” Taisey said. “I don’t leave until I get things done.” Taisey said she is not motivated by others at the library, and is sometimes distracted by peers checking their Facebook or other social networking sites. Taisey said graduating in August also motivates her. Jerry McCarthy studies in a variety of places, but prefers the library. “I came here for a couple hours and got two papers done,” McCarthy, a Battle Creek junior, said. McCarthy tried to work on the same assignments at his apartment this weekend, but was unsuccessful. Studying in the hallway between classes is also an option, McCarthy said. McCarthy has five finals left, with one course having two finals. A lack of permitted drinks

does not bother McCarthy, who usually brings a Gatorade or Mountain Dew to the library. Drinks with screw-on caps are permitted, but coffee and tea without secure caps are not permitted. Studying in the library means students have the option to reserve a study room. There are individual study rooms and group study rooms available. “We’re booked up every night for reservations,” said Cara Booker, a reference desk worker. The Lake Orion senior said students have been renting a lot of studying rooms due to exams. With 19 study rooms total, six of those can be reserved ahead of time, Booker said, while the other 13 are first-come firstserve basis. studentlife@cm-life.com

As students prepare to study for finals, everyone has different habits to help them focus. For some music is essential, others require absolute silence. “When I study I listen to the sound of the ocean on YouTube,” said Clio junior Thomas Lorentzen. “I just like to have some background noise.” Both Clinton Township junior Nicole Rieck and Clarkston senior Matt Alexander said they like to listen to film scores. “I definitely rock out to scores from films like ‘Gladiator’ and ‘Inception’ and composer John Williams,” Alexander said. He said he thinks they’re motivating and likes that there are “no lyrical distractions.” Rieck said she listens to a film score station on Pandora Radio and other classical stations.

“I like that there’s no lyrics to cause A.D.D. and classical supposedly stimulates the brain,” she said. Other music artists students said they liked to listen to Frank Sinatra, Kid Cudi, Lights, Owl City and John Mayer. Byron Center senior Matt Erdmans said he has an eclectic list of music he listens to while studying. “Three choices: Philip Glass – a brilliant minimalism composer, ‘Modest Mouse,’ and lastly, once an hour I have to change to Dirt Nasty,” he said. Columbiaville senior Dustin Himebauch said he prefers to listen to the Pandora Radio station for Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. He, like many other students, may benefit from a psychological phenomena called “the Mozart Effect.” This theory resulted from a 1993 study from the University of California, which they assessed the effects of listening to Mozart for 10 minutes and

concluded that it increased a person’s spatial reasoning ability. However, subsequent studies found this research to be flawed and unsubstantial and that though some spatial reasoning may increase, it is only temporarily. A CNN blog post from 2010 referenced a study done at the University of Wales Institute that found music may be more of a distraction when participants were trying to memorize a list in order. While another Stanford University study from 2007 found that music may help the brain pay attention. In conclusion, though music can help stimulate the brain, there is no decisive information or studies that can define whether music can impede or enhance studying. It’s probably best to simply choose silence or the music you enjoy listening while still being able to remain focused.

HOROSCOPE FOR APRIL 25 TO MAY 1 By Jennifer Shepherd The Lipstick Mystic

SUDOKU

Aries: March 21-April 19 Someone who isn’t your usual type could express an interest in you. Don’t ignore this person. Even if he or she isn’t the “right” religion, ethnicity, or race for you, you could be wrong. The moon says be open-minded. Taurus: April 20-May 20 A friendly sun is turning you into a babe magnet or a guy attractor. People are asking you out wherever you go. Strangers are hitting on you more than usual and casual friends are acting like they want to date you. Talk about sexual mojo. Gemini: May 21-June 21 Your honey might be in a bossy mood. Usually, you’re a pacifist, and temper tantrums don’t bother you. But with Mars stirring up some stress at your end, you might find yourself tempted to talk back and act cranky. Remember to count to 10 first. Cancer: June 22-July 22 Pay attention to your dreams and listen to your intuition. Neptune is increasing your natural ability to pick up on signs and signals. You could foresee something in your romantic life that will help you and your honey experience healing. Leo: July 23-Aug. 22 You’re ready to show off as the moon turns you into a total exhibitionist. You’ll wear a low cut top or tight jeans and flash your body on the dance floor. Or you’ll engage in flirty public dis-

plays of affection with a hot friend. Virgo: Aug. 23-Sept. 22 The moon has you playing the skeptic, wondering if your current relationship has staying power. But don’t let a bad day or a stressful week put you in a negative mood. You and your partner can still make things work. Libra: Sept. 23-Oct. 23 You’re great with words, and you could be inspired to write a love note or compose a song in honor of a special someone. The moon is increasing your creativity and giving you some great ideas about how to please your honey. Scorpio: Oct. 24-Nov. 2 Don’t let yourself get caught up old fears and inhibitions. Neptune is stirring up memories of the

past, when things weren’t so great in your love life. But you’ve moved on and made a better situation for yourself. Keep pushing forward. Sagittarius: Nov. 22-Dec. 21 Flirty Mars has you getting into trouble. You’ll call up a coworker and ask him or her out, even though dating at work is always complicated. Or you’ll try to seduce a married friend, even though you know it’s a bad idea. Capricorn: Dec. 22-Jan.19 You and your partner are working together as a team, getting things done. A businesslike sun is helping you create schedules, divide up chores, and create a better household budget. Just remember to leave a little space on your calendar for some fun.

Aquarius: Jan. 20-Feb. 18 You could hear from a former flame out of the blue. Just when you thought you were over this person, those old feelings are starting to come over you again. The moon says don’t make any sudden moves. Just notice what you feel and analyze your reactions. Pisces: Feb. 19-March 20 An emotional moon is encouraging you to ask for lots of hugs, kisses, and massages. You’ll release stress better if you can receive lots of nurturing touch from your honey. Allow tension to move through you and out of you and remember to breathe deeply.

HOROSCOPE FOR MAY 2 TO MAY 8 By Jennifer Shepherd, The Lipstick Mystic Aries: March 21-April 19 You’re being pulled in two directions at once, thanks to a schizophrenic moon. You might be thinking about a former flame while, at the same time, you’re pursuing a brand new flirtation. Give yourself time to sort it all out. Taurus: April 20-May 20 A passionate full moon is bringing hidden feelings to the surface. You could be tempted to make a confession to someone. Maybe you’ll finally tell that cute neighbor or sexy coworker that you’d love to go out with him or her. Gemini: May 21-June 21 It’s important to deal with schedules, budgets, and lists this week. Saturn is reminding you that sometimes you have to work within certain restrictions. The health of your family and your romantic relationship depends on it. Cancer: June 22-July 22 Don’t be intimidated by technology, even if your cell phone, your GPS system, and your DVD player give out on you at once. Uranus is reminding you not to be so focused on toys and machines. Take a break and enjoy some private time with your honey. Leo: July 23-Aug. 22 Mars is increasing your need for instant gratification. If your sweetheart has to work late, you’ll demand that he or she call in sick to spend time with you. Or if your partner is tending to a friend or relative, you’ll want your share of attention. Virgo: Aug. 23-Sept. 22 You’re enjoying your lover without worrying too much about tomorrow. A sensual moon has you focused on loving touch and intimate moments. You’re trying not to project into the future or put definitions or restrictions on your romance. Libra: Sept. 23-Oct. 23

An on again, off again relationship could pick up steam as Venus increases the sexual intensity. You’ll be wondering if this person might even be a soulmate. It’s probably too soon to tell for sure, but have fun investigating. Scorpio: Oct. 24-Nov. 2 You could be under pressure to date someone other people want you to be with. Maybe your parents are playing matchmaker or your friends are trying to hook you up with a nice acquaintance. The moon says it’s okay to check it out. Sagittarius: Nov. 22-Dec. 21 A moon opposition has you making a list of your partner’s flaws and failures. Meanwhile, you’re feeling restless about your own achievements and wondering if you need to make a change. Evolution is happening, and it’s good to ask some deep questions. Capricorn: Dec. 22-Jan.19 Pay more attention to your intuition and emotions. The moon is encouraging you to get in touch with what you really feel instead of being “efficient” and “hard working” every moment of the day. You’re allowed to want, to desire and to dream. Aquarius: Jan. 20-Feb. 18 You could encounter someone whose force of personality and sense of humor astound you. The moon is stirring up powerful feelings of attraction to a new friend, colleague or neighbor. You could find yourself comparing this person to people you’ve dated in the past. Pisces: Feb. 19-March 20 Don’t worry if you’re in hermit mode. The moon is making you extra sensitive, and it’s important for you to heal and find balance. You won’t want to spend time with a lot of people. And you might want to avoid dating or intense interactions with a sweetheart for a bit.
