ABOUT ME

Hello! MY NAME IS CHRISTINA

I love cards, board games and being active with my dog Maisie: running, hiking, kayaking (we are working on that). I like to cook intricate meals with fresh ingredients, and sarcasm is my specialty. I dabble in graphic design and want to continue exploring virtual reality and motion graphics as communication tools. What drives my architectural mind is sustainability, peoplefocused spaces, and health + wellness, specifically proactive and holistic health. I am an effective communicator, through visuals and with people. Collaboration and leadership go hand-in-hand for me. But most importantly, I am a friendly, passionate person who seeks a challenge in order to improve herself and innovate for others.

Soccer Sanctuary FOURTH YEAR SPRING STUDIO Location - Accra, Ghana Program - Soccer Boarding School Campus and Health+Wellness program Revit, Rhino, Grasshopper, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Hand Sketch

The project is a soccer training and education facility in Accra, Ghana. The 73-acre site is located in Madina, 30 minutes from Accra. Elements of design consideration include health and wellness, training, and residential design. Our team chose to develop the health and wellness program. We considered athlete and community health through the main attributes of holistic wellbeing: health, nutrition, and spirituality. The goal of the scheme is to foster wellbeing by creating educational opportunities to empower holistic lifestyles for the athlete and the community.

research & values

In Ghanaian culture, faith affects not only physical, but also mental, social, economic realms of one’s life. For example, sickness is not simply a physical problem, but a result of imbalance of ancestor relations.

A lot of health knowledge is shared mainly by word-of mouth, so creating public spaces brings opportunities for both education and community.

Soccer is inherent to the culture and

Outside-of-classroom learning enhances athlete education. Learning to grow food in the agricultural fields and cook them in the teaching kitchen promotes a healthier lifestyle.

comprehensive documentation

The class was taught by Dr. Kent Spreckelmeyer in association with Nicole Mater, who offered the project in connection with HOK Kansas City. The studio also received insight from structural, HVAC, and sustainability consultants. Because of the invaluable knowledge and advice we received, our process was very thorough. Throughout the course of the semester, Danielle Voelkerding and I executed research, site analysis, precedents, programming, master planning, wall section details, and both mid-term and final presentations. We have documented all of our work in this comprehensive book. Enjoy!

WELLBEING

Wellbeing Exploration FIFTH YEAR H+W MENTORSHIP WITH HDR Location - rural community Program - high school + LTC facility = community hub Rhino, Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign

The first half of my Health and Wellness graduate year, I worked with HDR-Omaha on studying and applying wellbeing to the schematic design phase, primarily focused on a central outdoor courtyard. Bringing together a high school and community health facility through a shared green space created virtual co-presence opportunities for all users. Through research, mashup and diagrammatic studies, the actions of wellbeing overlapped to illustrate that health and wellness design can enable people to have multifaceted wellness experiences, that can not only address the problems of today, COVID-19 isolation, but also inspire future H+W design thinking.

Mashups are an abstract way to explore health and wellness design function but also convey a feeling to the viewer. The mashup to the left exhibits the activity of a walking circulation path and outdoor plaza while it also artistically displays the visual connections of nature, people, and the mining history of the community. The above mashup peeks into the new form of healthcare waiting space that is open to views of student activity, of outdoor nature, and to the art of a desconstructed tartan, a plaid with identity and meaning for the community members that use the facility.

This elementary school possesses a modern style of learning, a Montessori classroom centered around a learning garden. The building consists of modern, organic classrooms hidden in the traditional Crossroads surroundings of shared spaces. Based on Montessori pedagogy, this radial classroom is centered around learning gardens, with paths leading to the garden, ceilings/roofs angled toward the garden, and a clear view centered on the garden. In its open plan, the classroom offers movable furniture and varying types of study places in the four sections of Montessori learning.

Graphic Design FOURTH YEAR FALL STUDIO Photoshop, Illustrator, AfterEffects

Graphic design always being an interest of mine, I decided to take a graphic design studio, where I designed branding for an architecture firm of my imagination, a sustainability focused firm called Zero Architecture. I created a sustainability poster to force people to think about climate change in a new way via riso printing. I made posters for a local nonprofit advocacy organization called Kansas Appleseed, sought to educate viewers about injustice in Kansas and to ignite action for fellow Kansans.

Alternative Breaks is a studentled, service organization at KU. I first became involved when I joined Habitat for Humanity for a week in Fort Worth, TX. I wanted to get involved, so I became the graphic designer. When I first joined Alternative Breaks, I got to re-brand for the years to come. This including logo, fonts, color schemes, etc. and eventually that bled into posters, handouts, social media graphics, presentations, t-shirts, and buttons. Over the two years I led this position, I learned to balance design with the needs of the presidents and learned better ways to communicate, to interest, excite, and educate through visual designs.
